The purpose of this assignment is to:
Understand the relationship between audiences and films.
Scenario
Movie Mania, a new film magazine aimed at a target market of 16 to 25 year olds plans to go into production in summer 2015.
The magazine will be published both online and in print. You have been commissioned to research and produce an article that
defines why and how film audiences engage with films of a particular genre. You will discuss an individual genre of film for this
article and apply theories such as reception theory and star theory to it, as well as indicating how factors of media literacy,
active spectatorship and fandom can enhance the appreciation of genre and the film going experience. The magazine wishes to
cover a range of issues and genres which appeal to young people, so your article should be pitched accordingly.

Task 4: Me & My Movies: Write an article which demonstrates your understanding of the relationship
between audiences and the films they enjoy, discussing a genre of film of your choice. You will apply
theories such as reception theory and star theory to the chosen films within your genre, using Lacey’s
repertoire of elements to identify genre conventions. You will also discuss issues such as media literacy,
active spectatorship and fandom.
Remember that you are trying to apply approaches to analysing films critically, supporting points with
arguments and elucidated examples and consistently using subject terminology correctly. In addition you
will present an analysis of a media product with supporting arguments and elucidated examples, and
consistently use subject terminology correctly.

You have been commissioned to research and produce an article that defines why and how film audiences engage with films of a particular genre. You will discuss an individual genre of film for this article and apply theories such as reception theory and star theory to it, as well as indicating how factors of media literacy, active spectatorship and fandom can enhance the appreciation of genre and the film going experience. The magazine wishes to cover a range of issues and genres which appeal to young people, so your article should be pitched accordingly.
