Working as a freelance games journalist you are going to write an illustrated critical article that unpacks a game genre of your 
choice for the Games Magazine, Edge.

your blog. Where you use the web to carry out your research make sure that you have cited all sources. 
Task 1 - Analysis of a Game Genre 
Use one post on your blog to write an illustrated critical article on a game genre of your choice. Use the work you produced in the 
last three assignments to assist in the unpacking of the games you have chosen: 
1. Select a genre of game and specific titles (3 minimum). 
2. Play and observe the games (take notes, use screen capture/grabs, voiceover or embedded video where 
possible). 
3. Describe structure/interaction/gameplay/themes. 
4. Analyse genre characteristics (production technology, distribution method, generic codes and conventions). 
5. Analyse narrative structures (closed, open, single strand, multi-strand, linear, non-linear, enigma, climax, 
equilibrium). 
6. Analyse representation of characters (negative and positive (stereotyping) representation of social groups, 
social issues and places/organisations). 
Remember that you are trying to present an analysis of a media product with supporting arguments and elucidated examples, and 
consistently using subject terminology correctly.
