2. What is migration?
• The migration generally refers to the periodic passing of animal form
one place for different purpose.
• The movement of fishes from one place to another place for food,
shelter, breeding, or protection is called migratory behavior of fishes.
• Migration in fishes takes place mainly for reproduction and feeding.
3. Types of mIgration
• Diadromous Migration (breeding purpose): These are truly migratory
fish which migrate from fresh water to sea water and from sea to
fresh water.
• Catadromous migration: The migration of fishes from fresh water to seawater
is called catadromous migration. This migration is especially for breeding
purpose. During breeding season they move from fresh water to marine
water, e.g. Anguila bengalensis.
• Anadromous migration: The migration of fishes from seawater to fresh water
especially for breeding purpose is called anadromous migration. They live
their whole life in see water and they migrate only for reproduction, e.g.
Salmon.
5. • Potamodromous: The migration of fish towards fresh water, e.g. Carps.
• Oceanodromous migration: it is confined in ocean for food, e.g. Clupea.
• Latitudinal Migration: The migration from south to north and vise-versa, e.g.
Swordfish
• Vertical migration: Migration from surface to the depths for food.

6. Advantages of migration
• Due to migration fish could get safe shelter and enough food.
• Migration can ensure better condition for reproduction.
• Fish gets better adapting in new places.
• There will be wide distribution.
• Less competition.
