A Freak Book Report
When thinking of the term "freak", it can be imagined in various ways depending on what type of
mindset you have or situation you are in at the moment. According to the dictionary, there are four
known ways and a vast percentage of the world only uses it in three. These ways are a very unusual
and unexpected event or situation, a person, animal, or plant with an unusual physical abnormality,
or behaving or cause to behave in a wild and irrational way, typically because of the effects of
extreme emotion, mental illness, or drugs. What if I told you there was one more way? Personally, I
didn't think of it, but an author by the name of Jamie Iredell did. Jamie Iredell took the word
"technical" to an entirely different dimension. His book entitled, ... Show more content on

Despite living in America, "No one ever says that they're American"(Iredell) and they all are so sure
that their nationality of people are who runs this land. "Americans think they own everything,
especially America, and by that they mean Earth"(Iredell), Americans, as much as they are not
American, only knows America giving you reason to believe that they believe this is all the world
has to offer. Also, they think it is the best country in the world; which makes it Earth to them. For
example, "the frankfurters– they'll tell you–are better than Frankfurtian frankfurters"(Iredell),
although that's where it originally arrived from. Overall, "The problem with American's is their
annoying politeness: they say, have some cholesterol, does your daughter speak American"(Iredell),
because we all hate to be killed with kindness. Jamie places the American people into a tight spot
where they are looked at like complete, excuse my language, assholes. Notwithstanding the "best
country in this world", it is almost like pulling a tooth when trying to find an American and
McDonalds is one of the most unhealthy things you can consume, yet, Americans "dream of opening
McDonalds on distant planets"(Iredell). They strive to teach everyone the American language in a
diabolical scheme to make it the global language. Americans are freaks of nature when being
thought of in this bare unexpected way. Nevertheless, all of this

Cindi Ray Research Paper
By Michael Elkins
Bev Robinson AKA Bev Nicholas also known as Cindi Ray, born in 1942, was Australia's first
female tattoo artist, working in a shop in Williamstown by accident when her tattooist boyfriend,
who at the time had broken his hand in a pub brawl, asked her to take over while the hand healed in
1961–1962. Back then there were less than a handful of female tattooist, let alone females with
tattoos, it was unheard of for a female to have a tattoo back in the 60's.
Although she got her first tattoo at the age of 19, it wasn't necessarily by choice as Harry Bartrem
had convinced her to get a tattoo with the promise of fame and fortune when she replied to an ad in
the newspaper looking for models who were willing to shave their eyebrows.

Examples Of Intertextuality In The Simpsons
The Simpsons is an American television show that features characters such as Homer, Marge, Lisa,
Bart and Maggie. This television series is one of the longest and most popular television shows to
ever hit the screens with a running of 26 seasons, beginning in the year 1990. The Simpsons is
known best for its humor, the characters, the scenarios and the impersonalisation of the "All
American" family. However there is also an understanding that The Simpsons has become a
worldwide phenomenon not only for the narration and plot of the television show, but for the use of
cultural representations and intertextuality used throughout the series. This essay will analysis The

There is an understanding that the episode could be based around the Watergate scandal and other
previous political events. The episode features Sideshow Bob in a debate with mayor Quimby who

events will understand the text that The Simpsons is producing and will be making sense of the

The History Of Sneakers
Sneakers have changed the world in a whole new way for footwear. Sneakers are soft shoes with a
rubber sole worn for sports or casual occasions. Sneakers got their name because they were so quiet,
a person wearing them could sneak up on someone. The different designs of sneakers caught people
eye to buying sneakers. The history of sneakers has shaped the way and reason people wear sneakers
today. It changed the world and improvement of sneakers forever. Have anybody ever thought about
how the first sneaker was created? Well the first sneakers were rubber–soled shoes called Plimsolls,
which were made in the 18th century. These shoes were pretty crude and one reason is there was no
right or left foot. In 1892, the U.S rubber company created

Think Like A Freak Analysis
The average person would shy away from being called a freak, but after reading Steven D. Levitt
and Stephen J. Dubner's fascinating book Think Like a Freak, I would argue this term to be a
compliment. I will begin by providing a brief summary of Think Like a Freak. Then, I will apply the
principles shared by this book to nursing practice and management. Finally, I will conclude with a
personal evaluation of the books strengths. Maybe by the end of this report, you too will embrace
the thoughts of a freak. "Have fun, think small, don't fear the obvious" is just one of the many
concepts that Think Like a Freak offers to retrain our brains way of thinking (Levitt & Dubner,

19). Think Like a Freak very plainly asserts that as humans we hate admitting we do not know
things, but frankly the things that we do know are vastly outweighed by the things that we do not
know. Levitt and Dubner very simply state, "It has long been said that the three hardest words to say
in the English language are I love you.", they go on to say, "We heartily disagree! For most people,
it is much harder to say I don't know. That's a shame, for until you can admit what you don't yet
know, it's virtually impossible to learn what you need to." (Levitt & Dubner, 2014, p. 20). An article
from Forbes noted that ideas, direction, and confidence could be gained from admitting you do not
know (The Muse, 2012). If managers and employees in the hospital setting could become
comfortable with the idea that we often do not know, then possibly we could move into a learning
environment that shares and amply provides feedback (Levitt & Dubner,

The Mess : Artist Always Skip South Australia

Mess: Artist always skip South Australia
Introduction: The Mess
Over the past number of years, artists have always seemed to skip coming to South Australia and
play sideshows in Adelaide when booked for a festival. Some big name artists also seem to skip
Adelaide when coming to Australia on tour, such as Kendrick Lamar, Avicii, Fleetwood Mac and
Tyler The Creator. This can seem like a bit of an insult to people who live in South Australia at times
and make the people who are into the particular music scene feel left out. It is not always the artist's
fault when they decide where to come play, it is often their managers' decision. This leads me to
become more curious about why artists always skip Adelaide and never skip ... Show more content

This is also the reason why stage production of the festival in Adelaide is so small. This can be seen
when figure a (FOMO Adelaide) and figure B (FOMO Gold Coast) are compared. As you can
clearly see from taking a quick glance at both festival sites with very similar lineups, the gold coast
venue got a lot more people attending with the same amount of promoting and marketing. This
clearly shows that there is something that hinders people from attending artist shows and festivals in
Adelaide, which isn 't there in cities like Brisbane or Melbourne. The manager of the festival and I
had a word and he said that the only reason they are bringing the festival to South Australia is so that
they can use Adelaide as a testing ground and see if there is much potential for future events. The
turnout was better than expected for this festival but still no where near as good as the other sites.
Ever since the festival, BBE has been bringing in artist shows to Adelaide, such as Diplo, which I
also worked on primarily as a marketing assistant, and his show was a lot bigger in the other cities
as well, with higher stage production, more lights and a lot more crowd interaction.
After speaking to the manager and the CEO of the events company, I collected valuable information
about the age demographics when comparing Adelaide to a city like Sydney. According to the

Pecola Nakedness
Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye begins by thrusting the reader into the cold embrace of human
suffrage in the form of Pecola Breedlove, thus dramatically detailing what her life is like whilst
launched before the public limelight. The sensation of nakedness is the perception of which
Morrison elaborates upon as Pecola is displaced of solitude and all of her human faculties are stored
into a cube for the world to refract its scornful eyes against. Furthermore, Morrison delineates
Pecola's suffering as though the human condition itself were an object; rather, one of those
sophisticated snow globes that one places on the wooden mantelpiece in order to proclaim the
winter season. The tragedy of Pecola Breedlove is that the town emulsifies her world,

The strangers' affect on society after they came to town are opposite. After the angle from A Very
Old Man with Enormous Wings came, people started going to sideshow to see him and the spider–
woman later on in the story. It is clear that they do it to get some entertainment from seeing someone
different from them and did not care about how horrid the old man's conditions are. If anything is
true, the old man's arrival lead to the society becoming more immoral and more callous. The arrival
of the corpse, on the other hand, from The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World made society
becoming more moral and less callous. Upon seeing the crops, the town's people began to imagine

The Negative Impact Of Donald Trump Scandal
The negative impact that this scandal has brought to the nation is inmeasurable and can be described
in a simple chain. Besides the results of thousands Brazilians being unemploymed, government
gross debt level and the a dent in the industrial sector, the image that the government is giving to the
wolrd is that the government is controlled by the wealthy and it does not have the structure to make
proper and ethical accountability achievable. The next part of the chain would be a question that
international investors and foreign observers would ask themselves. " Would I risk my money in this
country?", " Is now a good time to invest?". " Where is the integrity"?. With an uncertain answer,
there is a huge probability that it will affect drastically the trades, investmens, and business plans. ...

Washburn: Pop Culture Analysis
Washburn uses an American animated sitcom, The Simpsons, as the basis for the characters to
highlight the importance of pop culture in an apocalyptic era. Instead of talking about Shakespeare's
Romeo and Juliet, or a book like Harper Lee's To Kill a Mocking Bird, these characters talk about
The Simpsons. The characters probably talked about The Simpsons because this TV show had a
significant impact in our society. According to Darren Franch in Entertainment Weekly, the "iconic
animated series turned hyper–referentiality into an art form, regularly packing in throwaway
references to high and low culture right from the start,"(BBC 2014). The Simpsons are significant
because they often hold up a mirror to our society. By making their episodes ... Show more content

They would occasionally remember classical Greek, Roman, Medieval plays and playwrights such
as Shakespeare, Euripides, and Sophocles but the main focus would be around the latest TV shows,
movies, and books because people are more familiar with those. This idea can be observed in the
final act of the play. The third act of Mr. Burns: A Post–Electric Play examines the way the story and
plot of the original play has changed after 75 years. The simple campfire story from the first act
advanced to a musical, opera version that includes more characters from the original The Simpsons:
Cape Feare episode such as Chief Wiggham, Nelson, Principal Skinner, and Apu
Nahasapeemapetilon, the Kwik–E Mart clerk from a popular convenience store. The characters of
the third act play the episode in a style that includes different genres of music and dance that directly
reflects the popular culture of our day. For example, the act opens up with a "highly musicalized
version of an ambulance siren, then a version of a civil alert siren" followed by a choreography, and
a dance (74). In the world of the third act, they cannot consume popular culture the way we can in

Essay about Literature
In the opening scene of Jane Martin's "Rodeo," there are many stereotypical props used to portray
the beer–drinking, hard–working, cowboy image with the characteristic country music playing as an
added touch. Most people are familiar with this type of scene in their minds, with a man as the
character, but not this time – we find a tough, smart, opinionated woman with a distinctively country
name of Lurlene, and the typical cowboy kind of nickname, Big Eight. The reader will dive deeper
into the true character of this unusual woman and realize that she is no different from the average
woman in today's workforce. She is feeling the frustration of discrimination and the push out of the
only lifestyle that she knows, by "Them" (1667). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The more a sport becomes commercialized, the higher the cost of participating for the athlete. One
example would be that there are entry fees established to help raise monies that will be awarded to
the winner and the sponsoring company.
Unfortunately, for the athlete, once "they" start investing money into the sport, "they" also begin to
place constraints and regulations that all athletes must follow. Some may seem as ridiculous as
wearing regulation clothes that some would feel as though they looked "like Minnie damn Mouse in
a tu–tu" (1667) rather than a serious competitor. More often than not, the changes seem extreme and
one may wonder what could be waiting around the next corner; "it won't be long before they're
strappin' ice–skates on the ponies" (1667). Big Eight finds herself having a hard time adjusting to
the changes employed. Although she is not adapting well to the arrival of the sponsors, she is most
uncomfortable with the dress code changes. She does not feel as though dressing the women up in
fancy outfits will increase the capacity of the audiences when the rodeo is only supposed to be about
the rides. She believes that it does not matter what you wear, but instead, how you ride. She is
noticing that the "big crowds" (1667) are mostly city people in "designer jeans and day–glo
Stetsons," (1667) there "ain't hardly no ranch people, no farm people" (1667) any more.

Examples Of Stigma In The Elephant Man

LIFE Stigma is a corrupting and degrading demeanor of the society that dishonors a person or a
group of persons because of a trait, (for example, a sickness, disfigurement, colour, nationality,

internalized stigma. This apparent or disguised disgrace by the disparaged individual is equally

They have their ways in and out. A man in his time plays numerous parts. Goffman said that we
display a progression of veils to others, enacting, controlling and staging how we appear. We are
always concerned with how we come across, always attempting to showcase ourselves in the best
light. No matter where we are, we always "put on a mask" to get what we want and to be where we

circumstances we are in. We try to appear as what we would want to appear, depending upon who
we are interacting with. This is apparent in awkward situations where we suddenly find ourselves

Compare And Contrast The Twins Of Siam And The Elephant Man
Comparative Analytical Text Essay
The Twins of Siam and The Elephant Man
Essay question:
People who are physically disabled all lead similar lives.
Do the Twins of Siam and the Elephant Man show this to be true?
The Elephant Man is the true story of Joseph Merrick's life from Tim Vicary's novel. Joseph Merrick
was born in London in 1862 and later, he developed a disease that made him disabled. The Twins of
Siam is a short text about Change and Eng, who were the conjoined twins, born in Thailand in 1811.
These characters in both stories are all disabled and lived in the 18th century. Even though they all
experience physical disabilities, Joseph Merrick's life does not have a lot in common with Chang
and Eng's. While they are all physically disabled and stared at by others, Joseph's life is more
miserable since he suffers more abuse than the twins do. However, Joseph Merrick and the twins all
have some happiness experiences in their lives, but he experiences more loneliness and misery than
Chang and Eng. Although these three men feel frustrated because of their disabilities, they all find
some activities that they enjoy and make the best of their lives.
While Merrick, Chang and Eng are all physically disabled and stared at by others, Joseph's life is
more pathetic since he suffers more abuse than the twins do. Unfortunately, Merrick has been
humiliated and treated terribly by a man called Silcock in his early days, and he has no way of
escaping his miserable life. When

Pop Culture : The Portrayal Aspects Of Popular Culture
The term 'popular culture' holds different meanings depending on who's defining it and the context
of use. It is generally recognized as the vernacular or people's culture that predominates in a society
at a point in time. As Brummett explains in Rhetorical Dimensions of Popular Culture, pop culture
involves the aspects of social life most actively involved in by the public. As the 'culture of the
people', popular culture is determined by the interactions between people in their everyday
activities: styles of dress, the use of slang, greeting rituals and the foods that people eat are all
examples of popular culture. Popular culture is also informed by the mass media.
There are a number of generally agreed elements comprising popular culture. For example, popular
culture encompasses the most immediate and contemporary aspects of our lives. These aspects are
often subject to rapid change, especially in a highly technological world in which people are brought
closer and closer by omnipresent media. Certain standards and commonly held beliefs are reflected
in pop culture. Because of its commonality, pop culture both reflects and influences people's
everyday life (see e.g. Petracca and Sorapure, Common Culture). Furthermore, brands can attain pop
iconic status (e.g. the Nike swoosh or McDonald's golden arches). However, iconic brands, as other
aspects of popular culture, may rise and fall.
With these fundamental aspects in mind, popular culture may be defined as the products and

Butterfly Circus Essay
Recently I watched the short film Butterfly Circus by Joshua Weigel and I was very pleased. Prior to
watching the movie, only having read the title I immediately thought this was going to be a cartoon
for a young child. As I watched the first scene I shortly realized this was not the case. Weigel
introduces a familiar face Nick Vujicic, The Limbless man, a main character in this short film. The
film is about the famous showman going to a small circus sideshow and finding the "magnificent"
limbless man in a time of anguish while being bullied by the audience and other members of the
"freak show". After the limbless man's encounter with the showman he is forced to gain hope
against anything negative he has ever believed.
This movie opens with the setting in the depression era. A fleet of old cars traveling down a dirt road
passing families as they watch the car caravan with sorrowful eyes. Inside the fleet of old cars is the
company of the renowned Butterfly Circus on their way to the next town to lift the spirits of their
audiences. As they pass a sign for a carnival sideshow, the little boy asks the driver if they can go.
The driver answers reluctantly so the little boy ask Mr. Mendez, the famous showman, and he says,
"why not". Among the carousel, the fortune teller, and the games they find the show that everyone
has come to see. There sits a small tent that is known as "the best freak show in town". In this

History of Film Exhibition Prior to 1927
While the actual films produced during the silent era of American film production and distribution
are frequently discussed and analyzed, both as primary historical documents and important cultural
contributions, the actual practice of exhibiting and viewing those films gets somewhat less attention.
Prior to 1927 (the year when sound films first emerged onto the national stage), movie exhibition in
the United States was still growing into the massive industry it represents today, and it reflected in
the films being produced. By examining the history of film exhibition prior to 1927 in general, and
the experiences of Denver and New York in particular, it will be possible to understand how the
medium's nearly thirty–year existence prior to sound was characterized by a chaotic, open–ended
exhibition system that nevertheless predicts the gradual takeover of exhibition by a few large chains.
To begin it is necessary to note that there was some precedent for the exhibition of films even before
the medium was created, because by the time film became widely–known in the 1890s, phonographs
had been "set up in the arcades found in the heart of bustling cities," where "for a few cents
customers could select various music and speeches, which they listen to through individual ear
horns" (Gomery 4). Early film exhibitions attempted to recreate this process, using Thomas Edison's
Kinetograph to draw customers into arcades, even though the concept of individual audiences make

Todd Browning Freaks Essay
When Todd Browning released the film Freaks in 1932, it was extremely controversial, for obvious
reasons. Several of the ideologies and characteristics of the 1900s were presented in the film. The
film Freaks reproduces ideologies regarding disability and gender in an extremely degrading way.
The film Freaks is about a sideshow attraction made up of a wide variety of people. The people who
make up the side show all suffer from some sort of physical disability. Some of which include
Siamese twins, microcephalics, midgets, and people with no arms or legs. It is without question that
people who suffered from disabilities during the 19th and 20th centuries were treated differently.
Unfortunately, this treatment was not always better. These people ... Show more content on

The first example of this took place in the scene with Josephine Joseph. As two men are preparing
for the show, Josephine walks up to them. The men begin making several offensive comments to
her. One even describes her as, "a living, breathing monstrosity". Josephine is visibly unamused
with the men, but they continue. They go on and even laugh in her face as she walks away. Later,
she walks by two different men, Roscoe and Henry, and they begin making inappropriate comments
about her as well. Again, Josephine is unamused, but they continue making comments even after she
walks away. In a later scene, the Siamese twins, Daisy and Violet are talking with Wallace. Wallace
pinches Daisy's arm as a joke and Roscoe calls her over immediately. He accuses her of flirting with
Wallace, then tells Violet to shut up when she tries to explain. When Daisy and Violet say they have
to go, Roscoe says they are not going anywhere and they are going to stay right there with him. In
every single one of these instances, one could argue that the women are being treated
disrespectfully. As the film goes on, it becomes clear that not only are these women already seen as
inferior to their audiences, but also to several of their male

Fahrenheit 451 Ignorance Quotes
Montag from Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, in my opinion, is ignorant. I think this because in the
book, Montag is always following the crowd. In part three, Granger says, "I've been running ever

thought as to where he would be going, what he would be doing, or anything more. He hadn't even
known these people before stumbling upon them, yet he is so quick to trust and follow them like a
lemming. With the thought of a lemming in mind, Montag also just follows the crowd without a

Analysis Of Edgar Allan Poe 's ' Hop Frog '
Edgar Allan Poe: the name alone conjures an atmosphere of darkness and mystery. With notoriety
like that, it is awful peculiar that so little is definitely known about the man: particularly with his
personal on–goings, relativity or interaction with his world, and of course, his outré death. Based on
the intertextual references he placed throughout several of his works, researchers and readers alike
are open to interpretation and speculation of the great, and awe–inspiring Poe. For instance, his short
story "Hop–Frog" sparks readers' interest with a series of intertextual references/allusions regarding
disability, such as his subtle nuanced phraseology, and carefulness in characterizing otherness
amongst the members of the society detailed. Character interactions paired with Poe's distinct
phraseology are the intertextual references that allow for an interpretation of disability: what the
societal perception was of disability, both physical and mental, how the disabled were
received/treated socially, and why the plight of the physically ill–equipped became an underlying
theme within Poe's works. The short story "Hop–Frog," possesses these intertextual references in
order to build the case that Poe himself was somewhat inebriated by disability, both through
experience and internal struggle. It is important to first establish the criteria for disability of this
time. The American Psychological Association is "the largest scientific and professional

many things that were once discriminated are now accepted and many kinds of people recognized as
members of society and although there are instances that would challenge that notion, it is only a
minority. This represents the progress mankind has made to understand one another. But has the idea
of the freak show been abandoned with this new period? It is unfortunate ... Show more content on

The social media sites allow us to upload and express our identity. Of course there is debate on
insults over Facebook post online, but debaters argue social networking is a new field of
communicating there is no social conditioning really to establish how to properly act online compare
to how different from how we act in real life. It is also with social media that even when we point
out the freak show and in some way degrade the person, it leads to a positive matter. (Observers) For
example, the article, "Serious documentary or freak show" depicts a medical professional journey in
observing a clan of deformed natives. The clan was being "sensationalize" by providing
programming and donations to them for animals rights regardless it is a cartoon. However because
of this, the clan got money and medical treatment for themselves (Koppel 325). That is an example
of exploiting the deformities; it actually helped the clan despite a loss in privacy and dignity. That is
true, that social networking has allowed us to communicate with more people. We are social
creatures; we enjoy the company of others but are sometimes limited because of distance situations,
language barriers, and even failure to understand one another. Social networking is a concept that
has received an upgrade along with society. These upgrades are sites like Facebook, Instagram,
YouTube, and etc. They are the new ways we socialize

Literature
In the opening scene of Jane Martin's "Rodeo," there are many stereotypical props used to portray
the beer–drinking, hard–working, cowboy image with the characteristic country music playing as an
added touch. Most people are familiar with this type of scene in their minds, with a man as the
character, but not this time – we find a tough, smart, opinionated woman with a distinctively
country name of Lurlene, and the typical cowboy kind of nickname, Big Eight. The reader will dive
deeper into the true character of this unusual woman and realize that she is no different from the
average woman in today's workforce. She is feeling the frustration of discrimination and the push
out of the only lifestyle that she knows, by "Them" (1667). ... Show more content on

On this day in 1863, Union troops capture Lookout Mountain southwest of Chattanooga,
Tennessee,as they begin to break the Confederate siege of the city. In the "battle above the clouds,"
the Yankees scaled the slopes of the mountain on the periphery of the Chattanooga lines.
For nearly two monthsfollowing the Battle of Chickamauga, the Confederates, commanded by
General Braxton Bragg, had pinned the Union army inside Chattanooga. They were not able to
surround the city, though, and occupied Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge to the south and
east of the city instead. In late October, arriving to take command, Union General Ulysses S. Grant

Sideshow Alley – Event Management Plan
Introduction:
Event management involves creation and development of events such as festivals, conferences,
ceremonies, formal parties, concerts or conventions. It includes identifying the target audience,
planning the event concept, organising the logistics and coordinating the technical aspects prior to
the event day. The process of coordinating the event is called event planning. It involves budgeting,
timing, selecting the venue, obtaining necessary permission, arranging entertainments, decorations,
catering and contingency plans. Many industries, organisations and groups hold events in order to
market themselves, raise money, celebrate achievement or build business relationships. ... Show

Mr. Burns Drama Essay
Mr. Burns tells a story of the collapse of society after many fall ill due to nuclear power plants
destroying the earth. The play challenges common survival adaptations by introducing the desire for
nostalgic art, most specifically an episode from the Simpsons. The production of Mr. Burns includes
several different aspects that establish the play itself. Key components that bring a play to life are
directing, acting, set design, costumes, lighting, and sound. These characteristics and features of
play production are fundamentally the creation of the play.
Directing and acting are essentially what produces a play. There must be characters to tell the story,
and a director to tell the characters how to tell the story. The stage pictures of a production and the
concept of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Act III, it is obvious how drastically different the set design changed because of the marvelous
and exorbitant figures and scenery of the statues, chandeliers, and tapestries. The set design
establishes relationships between the characters and the play by framing the action on stage and
assisting the characters with setting the tone and mood for the play. Without set design, the turmoil
expressed in Act II would not have been expressed to the extent needed. The set reflected a run–
down version of a barely re–established society. Not only does set design give insight of the setting
of the play, but it also broadcasts the point of view for the production. For example, during each
scene of Mr. Burns, the audience is shown each point of view from the fourth wall aspect. During
Act II, when the characters are creating a commercial, the audience is allowed to watch the silent
drama between the characters as well the as the struggle to recreate television.Set design is an
element of a play the is immediately recognized and established. The audience relates the
environment of the set design to the world of the play, therefore almost automatically creating

Hamilton's Questions Regarding Public Opinion
We have studied a wide array of topics during this class. However, for the purpose of this paper, I
will be confronting week six's questions regarding public opinion. I will first discuss what the
Federalists believed the role of public opinion was in our system of government. I will then discuss
what public opinion's role has become in today's system of government. Then I will consider
whether governing by public opinion is hurtful or harmful to proper governance. I will then follow
up with why governing by the polls is an abandonment of our republican form of government and
conclude with the why our official should not govern through public opinion. The Federalists
believed that many of our legislators should be in some way separated ... Show more content on

The role of these polls has become more of an instruction manual for representatives than anything
else. They vote according to the polls and what public sentiment is at the time. According to Sooner
Polls, "public opinion polls help guide policy by giving decision–makers impartial information
about what the public wants." The role of public opinion polls has become rather important in our
system of government. These polls have mixed together public opinion and legislative action. For
example, there is a daily presidential approval rating tracker that directly ties presidential action to
public opinion. According to America's Failing Experiment, polls have magnified the increasing
democratization and mixing of public opinion and presidential action. The role of these polls has
become to directly tie the public with their legislatures and the executive. These polls have further
magnified our representatives preference in being delegates rather than trustees. Our representatives
no longer represent what they believe to be our best interests, but rather what we tell them our best
interests are. These polls have served to erode the distance that the founders placed in the
constitution between the people and their Senators, Executive, and

Jonathan Swift Satire On Human Nature
Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift is a prose satire on human nature. Many people believe that this
piece of writing has a underlying lesson of man's true nature. It has been theorized that this work is
really about whether or not man is born corrupt or becomes corrupt due to his place in society and
the people around him. Gulliver meets the Lilliputians on their island after he is shipwrecked. As the
one gets deeper into the book, the impression that the reader has changes. In the beginning the
Lilliputians do not seem too important but that changes as the book progresses.
In the beginning of the story, the people of Lilliput seem to be very untrusting of Gulliver. When his
ship is wrecked on their island, they tied him up and held ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

He is visited by the Emperor and they begin to form a relationship. Gulliver takes in an interest in
the language of the people and their customs. He gains their trust and they set him free. He is then
begins to help the people solve some of the problems they are encountering. For instance, he lends a
hand to help with the problems with the problems occurring on the island of Blefuscu.
As the book continues, Gulliver begins to fall from favor and the reader's impression of the
Lilliputians begin to change. They begin to view Gulliver in a negative way when he refuses to help
them enslave the Blefuscudians. Also, when Gulliver puts out the palace fire, the people are not
happy with him although he is only trying to help. The reader then sees how Gulliver is being
treated. He went from being feared to being liked and then back to being the enemy.
Finally, Gulliver's travels is sometimes thought of a children's book but there is so much underlying
meaning. Gulliver can be thought of as a gullible man. The Lilliputians can be seen as corrupt
government. When taken on face value this story is one to sit back and enjoy but as you look for the
deeper meanings, it then becomes one that teaches lessons to all that read

The, The Biggest Loser, Big World, By Robert Bogdan
"Little People, Big World" and "RuPaul's Drag Race," "The Bachelor" and "Survivor," "The Biggest
Loser" and "The Real World" "Miss America" and "American Idol"–it is difficult to watch American
television in the first decade of the twenty–first century without encountering a freak. Britney
Spears, called her 2009, forty–nine show tour through the US, Canada and the UK. Perhaps, more
accurately, it is not so much that the circus goes on as that the circus has been revived in the
American imagination. According to Robert Bogdan in his socio–historical study of the freak show
in America, the popularity of the circus had run its course by the 1940s (60), attracting in its waning
years a lower class of audience, such as new American immigrants, the rural poor and the urban
working class (55). The exhibition of freaks had become morally incorrect. Strangely, at the turn of
the twenty–first century, America is revealing a renewed fascination with freaks, a fascination that
has not been so publicly apparent since the Victorian era when freak exhibits were all the rage, and
not just for backward country folk waiting for the travelling circus to roll through town, but for
sophisticated big city people who frequented P.T. Barnum's famous American Museum at Broadway
and Ann Street in New York City. This time around, it is middle America enjoying the circus on their
wide–screen televisions in the privileged privacy of their dens and theater rooms. As the vast array

The Dystopia Of Anne Washburn 's Play, Mr. Burns : A Post...
The kinds of popular culture that survive in the dystopia of Anne Washburn's play, Mr. Burns: A
Post–Electric play addresses our own engagement with popular culture in many ways. The purposes
of popular culture sometimes change or remain the same. Popular culture is with us throughout our
lives in times of triumph and anxiety. Washburn's play focuses on a group of people who recall an
episode of The Simpsons during a time of crisis. They compare lines and characters in order to
better understand the environment around them and they talk about it to entertain themselves.
Recalling an old episode was an activity for the characters to spend time during a period of nuclear
disaster. This type of entertainment gives the audience interest, relief, and excitement in a dull
boring life. Their form of engagement with popular culture is similar to ours through interaction and
point of view.
The first Act of Mr. Burns: A Post–Electric Play is set during a time of a dystopian society because
of a nuclear disaster in the country. People did not have a form of entertainment because they had no
electricity, television, and digital entertainment. They had to rethink the way that they entertained
themselves. Therefore, in the first act, a group of people sits around a campfire to talk about The
Simpsons: Cape Feare episode. This scene addresses our own engagement with popular culture
through interaction. People of all backgrounds meet and bond with each other through popular
culture. For

The History And Social Impact Of The Circus Freak Show
The History and Social Impact of the Circus "Freak Show" Since it's humble beginning in the mid
16th century, the circus and "freak show" act has been entertaining and horrifying people to this day;
however, in today's ultra–sensitive society, how has the classic "freak show" evolved to be deemed
acceptable and be used to promote acceptance and positive views of people with abnormalities,
rather than viewing these people as "freaks", as was the original purpose of the classic "freak
show"? Popularized in the mid–16th century, the circus freak show became a common pastime in
England. People with deformities and disabilities began being treated less as humans, and more as
sources of interest and entrainment, and the crowds would gather to see these people exhibited. A
notable early display was that of conjoined twins Lazarus and Johannes Baptista Colloredo. As
described by History Magazine, "Lazarus was thought to be quite handsome, appearing otherwise
perfectly healthy, but for his conjoined twin brother. Joannes Baptista protruded, upside down, from
his brother's chest. He was significantly smaller than Lazarus, and only his upper body and left leg
visibly extended from his brother's torso" (Strange and Bizarre:). Based off this description it is no
wonder why the brothers became a popular exhibition at the court of King Charles I. Though the
"freak show" was initially a display for the upper class, it would not take long for people to see the
profitability of these acts.

Jonathan Swifts Satire
Recently, there has been an occurrence of a disturbing new trend worldwide: the rise of the
transgender community. These people are dangerous and should be kept far away from your children
at all costs. Their outrageous cross–dressing habits are a threat to gender secure people everywhere.
Gender secure people are clearly the only ones who can think logically and know exactly how to
live their lives. Transgender people obviously have no idea what they are doing. Gender secure
people know exactly what they are going to do the moment they are born. They are either born to be
a lawyer, a teacher, a politician, or whatever their DNA tells them to be. They never have to find
themselves, especially as teenagers, they know there is nothing ... Show more content on

Irony is most noticeable in how the author declares how transgender people have no idea who they
are and gender secure people do. As the majority of society knows, every single person struggles
with periods of self–identity issues. Nobody truly knows who they are supposed to be until they
have spent some time sifting through their own mind. Irony is also evident in the sentence "Let's
face it: do people really believe that someone who cross–dresses as the opposite sex can actually be
brave or strong?" This sentence is ironic because it takes a great deal of strength bravery for
transgender people to express themselves and show the world who they truly are. The satire also
uses exaggeration, like in the writings of Jonathan Swift. For example, the satire says, "These cross–
dressing freaks are little more than a circus sideshow attraction." This is exaggeration because
although transgender people do cross–dress, they are not necessarily "circus freaks". They are real
people who think and have feelings like those who are gender secure. These people are not sideshow
attraction freaks who exist exclusively for people's entertainment. Sentences such as "These people
are dangerous and should be kept far away from your children at all costs" and "Their

Censorship Of The Movie Freaks
By 1932, America was swallowed up by the Depression yet even though money was tight,
thousands of people flocked to the movie theaters. The new craze of "talkies" had just arrived on the
silver screen, with this, came the genre of film, horror. Universal had already had their first major
success with Tod Browning's 1931 film, Dracula. With this success under Browning's belt, MGM
studios wanted to join the horror bandwagon. They offered Browning the opportunity the director
the film, Freaks, which was an adaption of Tod Robbins's short story, Spurs. Freaks, unfortunately,
did not meet the expectations of the studio and it only grossed half of its production budget. The
most devastating issue the movie endured was censorship. The original script ... Show more content

the idea that children would be exposed to immortality was cause enough for many horror films of
the early century to be edited or censored. The Hays Codes were developed by the Motion Picture
Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), to condemn what they felt was low standard
films, production companies disregarded the code though. The original codes centered around two
main points, films could not "lower the moral standards of those who see it" and "the sympathy of
the audience shall never be thrown to the side of crime, wrongdoing, evil, or sin." Several scenes in
Freaks violated these codes, the most notorious is the missing end to the movie. The original ending
consisted of Cleo being chased into the forest and standing under a tree, lightning strikes the tree
causing it to fall and Cleo becomes crushed under the branches. The "freaks" crawl through the mud
and branches and the last scene that the audience sees Cleo is while the "freaks" jumping on to her
body. Though this scene is brutal, the audience cannot help but sympathize with the sideshow
performers because of Cleo's cruelty to Hans. For obvious reasons, one can see why, the MPPDA
reacted to this scene and why

Stereotypes In African-America
Afros were first worn by Circassian beauties also known as "Moss–haired girls", a group of women
in sideshow attractions in the United States by P. T. Barnum. These women were claimed to be from

the "exotic East" as pure examples of the Caucasian race . Afros became popular in the 1960s in the
african–american community when the Black panthers brought it out .The reason I choose the art
"estefania afro" is because I have a strong relationship with big and poofy hair. I love big hair just
because of the way it looks and feels and wearing things that are different is apart of who I am.I

The Life of 'Cry Baby' – Melanie Martinez AU
Chapter 1: Dollhouse – "Don't let them see what goes down in the kitchen..."
Hi, I'm Melanie, my family may look perfect from the outside but you don't know the least of it.....
My mum's the mayor, she may be all sweet and loving in the public, but as soon as she enters the
house, a bottle of the closest alcoholic substance in the house is in her hands. She's an alcoholic, not
an abusive drunk, just reckless.
My dad is the headmaster at the most prestigious boarding academy in all of town. He may look
faithful and loving to his wife, the mayor. But no, when mum is out on the town or chugging down
at least 2 bottles of alcohol per night at home, he's out having his long–term affair with mum's
secretary.
My brother, Alexander, the mayor's son; the most giving, well dressed, sweet and caring boy in the
entire town, if you think his smile is fabricated, you're 100% right. Behind the closed doors of our
large house, he's also the town's biggest drug lord. He goes under an alias so no one rats him out the
government.
Then there's me, Melanie Martinez. I'm no one but the mayor's cute, doll–like looking daughter. I'm
the only sort of normal one in this house. My routine for the morning is like no other teenager's.
When I wake up at six am, I go to mother's bedroom and place her aspirin and water on her bedside
table. I carefully wash the lipstick stains off dad's clothing. I go to my brother's room and replenish

A Freak Book Report

  • 1. A Freak Book Report When thinking of the term "freak", it can be imagined in various ways depending on what type of mindset you have or situation you are in at the moment. According to the dictionary, there are four known ways and a vast percentage of the world only uses it in three. These ways are a very unusual and unexpected event or situation, a person, animal, or plant with an unusual physical abnormality, or behaving or cause to behave in a wild and irrational way, typically because of the effects of extreme emotion, mental illness, or drugs. What if I told you there was one more way? Personally, I didn't think of it, but an author by the name of Jamie Iredell did. Jamie Iredell took the word "technical" to an entirely different dimension. His book entitled, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite living in America, "No one ever says that they're American"(Iredell) and they all are so sure that their nationality of people are who runs this land. "Americans think they own everything, especially America, and by that they mean Earth"(Iredell), Americans, as much as they are not American, only knows America giving you reason to believe that they believe this is all the world has to offer. Also, they think it is the best country in the world; which makes it Earth to them. For example, "the frankfurters– they'll tell you–are better than Frankfurtian frankfurters"(Iredell), although that's where it originally arrived from. Overall, "The problem with American's is their annoying politeness: they say, have some cholesterol, does your daughter speak American"(Iredell), because we all hate to be killed with kindness. Jamie places the American people into a tight spot where they are looked at like complete, excuse my language, assholes. Notwithstanding the "best country in this world", it is almost like pulling a tooth when trying to find an American and McDonalds is one of the most unhealthy things you can consume, yet, Americans "dream of opening McDonalds on distant planets"(Iredell). They strive to teach everyone the American language in a diabolical scheme to make it the global language. Americans are freaks of nature when being thought of in this bare unexpected way. Cindi Ray Research Paper By Michael Elkins Bev Robinson AKA Bev Nicholas also known as Cindi Ray, born in 1942, was Australia's first female tattoo artist, working in a shop in Williamstown by accident when her tattooist boyfriend, who at the time had broken his hand in a pub brawl, asked her to take over while the hand healed in 1961–1962. Back then there were less than a handful of female tattooist, let alone females with tattoos, it was unheard of for a female to have a tattoo back in the 60's. Sneakers got their name because they were so quiet, a person wearing them could sneak up on someone. The different designs of sneakers caught people eye to buying sneakers. The history of sneakers has shaped the way and reason people wear sneakers today. It changed the world and improvement of sneakers forever. Have anybody ever thought about how the first sneaker was created? Well the first sneakers were rubber–soled shoes called Plimsolls, which were made in the 18th century. • 9. Think Like A Freak Analysis The average person would shy away from being called a freak, but after reading Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner's fascinating book Think Like a Freak, I would argue this term to be a compliment. I will begin by providing a brief summary of Think Like a Freak. Then, I will apply the principles shared by this book to nursing practice and management. Finally, I will conclude with a personal evaluation of the books strengths. Maybe by the end of this report, you too will embrace the thoughts of a freak. "Have fun, think small, don't fear the obvious" is just one of the many concepts that Think Like a Freak offers to retrain our brains way of thinking (Levitt & Dubner, 2014, p. 98). Think Like a Freak very plainly asserts that as humans we hate admitting we do not know things, but frankly the things that we do know are vastly outweighed by the things that we do not know. Levitt and Dubner very simply state, "It has long been said that the three hardest words to say in the English language are I love you.", they go on to say, "We heartily disagree! For most people, it is much harder to say I don't know. That's a shame, for until you can admit what you don't yet know, it's virtually impossible to learn what you need to." (Levitt & Dubner, 2014, p. 20). An article from Forbes noted that ideas, direction, and confidence could be gained from admitting you do not know (The Muse, 2012). If managers and employees in the hospital setting could become comfortable with the idea that we often do not know, then possibly we could move into a learning environment that shares and amply provides feedback (Levitt & Dubner, ... • 11. The Mess : Artist Always Skip South Australia Innovation Mess: Artist always skip South Australia Introduction: The Mess Over the past number of years, artists have always seemed to skip coming to South Australia and play sideshows in Adelaide when booked for a festival. Some big name artists also seem to skip Adelaide when coming to Australia on tour, such as Kendrick Lamar, Avicii, Fleetwood Mac and Tyler The Creator. This can seem like a bit of an insult to people who live in South Australia at times and make the people who are into the particular music scene feel left out. It is not always the artist's fault when they decide where to come play, it is often their managers' decision. This leads me to become more curious about why artists always skip Adelaide and never skip ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is also the reason why stage production of the festival in Adelaide is so small. This can be seen when figure a (FOMO Adelaide) and figure B (FOMO Gold Coast) are compared. As you can clearly see from taking a quick glance at both festival sites with very similar lineups, the gold coast venue got a lot more people attending with the same amount of promoting and marketing. This clearly shows that there is something that hinders people from attending artist shows and festivals in Adelaide, which isn 't there in cities like Brisbane or Melbourne. The manager of the festival and I had a word and he said that the only reason they are bringing the festival to South Australia is so that they can use Adelaide as a testing ground and see if there is much potential for future events. The turnout was better than expected for this festival but still no where near as good as the other sites. Ever since the festival, BBE has been bringing in artist shows to Adelaide, such as Diplo, which I also worked on primarily as a marketing assistant, and his show was a lot bigger in the other cities as well, with higher stage production, more lights and a lot more crowd interaction. After speaking to the manager and the CEO of the events company, I collected valuable information about the age demographics when comparing Adelaide to a city like Sydney. Pecola Nakedness Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye begins by thrusting the reader into the cold embrace of human suffrage in the form of Pecola Breedlove, thus dramatically detailing what her life is like whilst launched before the public limelight. The sensation of nakedness is the perception of which Morrison elaborates upon as Pecola is displaced of solitude and all of her human faculties are stored into a cube for the world to refract its scornful eyes against. Furthermore, Morrison delineates Pecola's suffering as though the human condition itself were an object; rather, one of those sophisticated snow globes that one places on the wooden mantelpiece in order to proclaim the winter season. Instead of talking about Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, or a book like Harper Lee's To Kill a Mocking Bird, these characters talk about The Simpsons. The characters probably talked about The Simpsons because this TV show had a significant impact in our society. According to Darren Franch in Entertainment Weekly, the "iconic animated series turned hyper–referentiality into an art form, regularly packing in throwaway references to high and low culture right from the start,"(BBC 2014). Essay about Literature In the opening scene of Jane Martin's "Rodeo," there are many stereotypical props used to portray the beer–drinking, hard–working, cowboy image with the characteristic country music playing as an added touch. Most people are familiar with this type of scene in their minds, with a man as the character, but not this time – we find a tough, smart, opinionated woman with a distinctively country name of Lurlene, and the typical cowboy kind of nickname, Big Eight. The more a sport becomes commercialized, the higher the cost of participating for the athlete. One example would be that there are entry fees established to help raise monies that will be awarded to the winner and the sponsoring company. Unfortunately, for the athlete, once "they" start investing money into the sport, "they" also begin to place constraints and regulations that all athletes must follow. Some may seem as ridiculous as wearing regulation clothes that some would feel as though they looked "like Minnie damn Mouse in a tu–tu" (1667) rather than a serious competitor. More often than not, the changes seem extreme and one may wonder what could be waiting around the next corner; "it won't be long before they're strappin' ice–skates on the ponies" (1667). Big Eight finds herself having a hard time adjusting to the changes employed. Although she is not adapting well to the arrival of the sponsors, she is most uncomfortable with the dress code changes. The subsequent adapting conduct of the influenced individual results in internalized stigma. Compare And Contrast The Twins Of Siam And The Elephant Man Comparative Analytical Text Essay The Twins of Siam and The Elephant Man Essay question: People who are physically disabled all lead similar lives. Do the Twins of Siam and the Elephant Man show this to be true? The Elephant Man is the true story of Joseph Merrick's life from Tim Vicary's novel. Joseph Merrick was born in London in 1862 and later, he developed a disease that made him disabled. The Twins of Siam is a short text about Change and Eng, who were the conjoined twins, born in Thailand in 1811. These characters in both stories are all disabled and lived in the 18th century. Even though they all experience physical disabilities, Joseph Merrick's life does not have a lot in common with Chang and Eng's. While they are all physically disabled and stared at by others, Joseph's life is more miserable since he suffers more abuse than the twins do. However, Joseph Merrick and the twins all have some happiness experiences in their lives, but he experiences more loneliness and misery than Chang and Eng. Although these three men feel frustrated because of their disabilities, they all find some activities that they enjoy and make the best of their lives. While Merrick, Chang and Eng are all physically disabled and stared at by others, Joseph's life is more pathetic since he suffers more abuse than the twins do. • 33. Pop Culture : The Portrayal Aspects Of Popular Culture The term 'popular culture' holds different meanings depending on who's defining it and the context of use. It is generally recognized as the vernacular or people's culture that predominates in a society at a point in time. As Brummett explains in Rhetorical Dimensions of Popular Culture, pop culture involves the aspects of social life most actively involved in by the public. As the 'culture of the people', popular culture is determined by the interactions between people in their everyday activities: styles of dress, the use of slang, greeting rituals and the foods that people eat are all examples of popular culture. Popular culture is also informed by the mass media. There are a number of generally agreed elements comprising popular culture. For example, popular culture encompasses the most immediate and contemporary aspects of our lives. These aspects are often subject to rapid change, especially in a highly technological world in which people are brought closer and closer by omnipresent media. Certain standards and commonly held beliefs are reflected in pop culture. Because of its commonality, pop culture both reflects and influences people's everyday life (see e.g. Petracca and Sorapure, Common Culture). Furthermore, brands can attain pop iconic status (e.g. the Nike swoosh or McDonald's golden arches). However, iconic brands, as other aspects of popular culture, may rise and fall. Prior to watching the movie, only having read the title I immediately thought this was going to be a cartoon for a young child. As I watched the first scene I shortly realized this was not the case. Weigel introduces a familiar face Nick Vujicic, The Limbless man, a main character in this short film. The film is about the famous showman going to a small circus sideshow and finding the "magnificent" limbless man in a time of anguish while being bullied by the audience and other members of the "freak show". After the limbless man's encounter with the showman he is forced to gain hope against anything negative he has ever believed. This movie opens with the setting in the depression era. • 39. History of Film Exhibition Prior to 1927 While the actual films produced during the silent era of American film production and distribution are frequently discussed and analyzed, both as primary historical documents and important cultural contributions, the actual practice of exhibiting and viewing those films gets somewhat less attention. Prior to 1927 (the year when sound films first emerged onto the national stage), movie exhibition in the United States was still growing into the massive industry it represents today, and it reflected in the films being produced. By examining the history of film exhibition prior to 1927 in general, and the experiences of Denver and New York in particular, it will be possible to understand how the medium's nearly thirty–year existence prior to sound was characterized by a chaotic, open–ended exhibition system that nevertheless predicts the gradual takeover of exhibition by a few large chains. To begin it is necessary to note that there was some precedent for the exhibition of films even before the medium was created, because by the time film became widely–known in the 1890s, phonographs had been "set up in the arcades found in the heart of bustling cities," where "for a few cents customers could select various music and speeches, which they listen to through individual ear horns" (Gomery 4). Early film exhibitions attempted to recreate this process, using Thomas Edison's Kinetograph to draw customers into arcades, even though the concept of individual audiences make much more ... Several of the ideologies and characteristics of the 1900s were presented in the film. The film Freaks reproduces ideologies regarding disability and gender in an extremely degrading way. The film Freaks is about a sideshow attraction made up of a wide variety of people. The people who make up the side show all suffer from some sort of physical disability. Some of which include Siamese twins, microcephalics, midgets, and people with no arms or legs. They go on and even laugh in her face as she walks away. Later, she walks by two different men, Roscoe and Henry, and they begin making inappropriate comments about her as well. Again, Josephine is unamused, but they continue making comments even after she walks away. In a later scene, the Siamese twins, Daisy and Violet are talking with Wallace. When Daisy and Violet say they have to go, Roscoe says they are not going anywhere and they are going to stay right there with him. • 43. Fahrenheit 451 Ignorance Quotes Montag from Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, in my opinion, is ignorant. I think this because in the book, Montag is always following the crowd. In part three, Granger says, "I've been running ever since. Do you want to join us, Montag?" Montag immediately replies with, "Yes." He gives no thought as to where he would be going, what he would be doing, or anything more. He hadn't even known these people before stumbling upon them, yet he is so quick to trust and follow them like a lemming. With the thought of a lemming in mind, Montag also just follows the crowd without a second thought. In part two, Faber is talking to Montag and says, "The public itself stopped reading of its own accord. You firemen provide a circus now and then at which buildings ... • 45. Analysis Of Edgar Allan Poe 's ' Hop Frog ' Edgar Allan Poe: the name alone conjures an atmosphere of darkness and mystery. With notoriety like that, it is awful peculiar that so little is definitely known about the man: particularly with his personal on–goings, relativity or interaction with his world, and of course, his outré death. Based on the intertextual references he placed throughout several of his works, researchers and readers alike are open to interpretation and speculation of the great, and awe–inspiring Poe. For instance, his short story "Hop–Frog" sparks readers' interest with a series of intertextual references/allusions regarding disability, such as his subtle nuanced phraseology, and carefulness in characterizing otherness amongst the members of the society detailed. Character interactions paired with Poe's distinct phraseology are the intertextual references that allow for an interpretation of disability: what the societal perception was of disability, both physical and mental, how the disabled were received/treated socially, and why the plight of the physically ill–equipped became an underlying theme within Poe's works. The short story "Hop–Frog," possesses these intertextual references in order to build the case that Poe himself was somewhat inebriated by disability, both through experience and internal struggle. It is important to first establish the criteria for disability of this time. The American Psychological Association is "the largest scientific and professional organization representing ... • 47. Essay on Social Networking: A Modern Day Freak Show The carnival grotesque, with its freak shows and abnormal humans, was very popular and controversial back in the late 18th to early 19th century, by then it had matured into a distinct form of entertainment. In the 21st century, has the concept become dated? Has the freak show been revealed for the mistreatment and subjugation of many poor human beings? We live in times where many things that were once discriminated are now accepted and many kinds of people recognized as members of society and although there are instances that would challenge that notion, it is only a minority. This represents the progress mankind has made to understand one another. But has the idea of the freak show been abandoned with this new period? It is unfortunate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The social media sites allow us to upload and express our identity. Of course there is debate on insults over Facebook post online, but debaters argue social networking is a new field of communicating there is no social conditioning really to establish how to properly act online compare to how different from how we act in real life. It is also with social media that even when we point out the freak show and in some way degrade the person, it leads to a positive matter. (Observers) For example, the article, "Serious documentary or freak show" depicts a medical professional journey in observing a clan of deformed natives. The clan was being "sensationalize" by providing programming and donations to them for animals rights regardless it is a cartoon. However because of this, the clan got money and medical treatment for themselves (Koppel 325). That is an example of exploiting the deformities; it actually helped the clan despite a loss in privacy and dignity. That is true, that social networking has allowed us to communicate with more people. We are social creatures; we enjoy the company of others but are sometimes limited because of distance situations, language barriers, and even failure to understand one another. Social networking is a concept that has received an upgrade along with society. These upgrades are sites like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and etc. They are the new ways we socialize ... Literature In the opening scene of Jane Martin's "Rodeo," there are many stereotypical props used to portray the beer–drinking, hard–working, cowboy image with the characteristic country music playing as an added touch. Most people are familiar with this type of scene in their minds, with a man as the character, but not this time – we find a tough, smart, opinionated woman with a distinctively country name of Lurlene, and the typical cowboy kind of nickname, Big Eight. The reader will dive deeper into the true character of this unusual woman and realize that she is no different from the average woman in today's workforce. • 55. Mr. Burns Drama Essay Mr. Burns tells a story of the collapse of society after many fall ill due to nuclear power plants destroying the earth. The play challenges common survival adaptations by introducing the desire for nostalgic art, most specifically an episode from the Simpsons. The production of Mr. Burns includes several different aspects that establish the play itself. Key components that bring a play to life are directing, acting, set design, costumes, lighting, and sound. These characteristics and features of play production are fundamentally the creation of the play. Directing and acting are essentially what produces a play. There must be characters to tell the story, and a director to tell the characters how to tell the story. The stage pictures of a production and the concept of a ... In Act III, it is obvious how drastically different the set design changed because of the marvelous and exorbitant figures and scenery of the statues, chandeliers, and tapestries. The set design establishes relationships between the characters and the play by framing the action on stage and assisting the characters with setting the tone and mood for the play. Without set design, the turmoil expressed in Act II would not have been expressed to the extent needed. The set reflected a run– down version of a barely re–established society. Not only does set design give insight of the setting of the play, but it also broadcasts the point of view for the production. For example, during each scene of Mr. Burns, the audience is shown each point of view from the fourth wall aspect. During Act II, when the characters are creating a commercial, the audience is allowed to watch the silent drama between the characters as well the as the struggle to recreate television.Set design is an element of a play the is immediately recognized and established. However, for the purpose of this paper, I will be confronting week six's questions regarding public opinion. I will first discuss what the Federalists believed the role of public opinion was in our system of government. I will then discuss what public opinion's role has become in today's system of government. Then I will consider whether governing by public opinion is hurtful or harmful to proper governance. I will then follow up with why governing by the polls is an abandonment of our republican form of government and conclude with the why our official should not govern through public opinion. According to Sooner Polls, "public opinion polls help guide policy by giving decision–makers impartial information about what the public wants." The role of public opinion polls has become rather important in our system of government. These polls have mixed together public opinion and legislative action. For example, there is a daily presidential approval rating tracker that directly ties presidential action to public opinion. According to America's Failing Experiment, polls have magnified the increasing democratization and mixing of public opinion and presidential action. The role of these polls has become to directly tie the public with their legislatures and the executive. These polls have further magnified our representatives preference in being delegates rather than trustees. Many people believe that this piece of writing has a underlying lesson of man's true nature. It has been theorized that this work is really about whether or not man is born corrupt or becomes corrupt due to his place in society and the people around him. Gulliver meets the Lilliputians on their island after he is shipwrecked. As the one gets deeper into the book, the impression that the reader has changes. They begin to view Gulliver in a negative way when he refuses to help them enslave the Blefuscudians. Also, when Gulliver puts out the palace fire, the people are not happy with him although he is only trying to help. The reader then sees how Gulliver is being treated. He went from being feared to being liked and then back to being the enemy. Finally, Gulliver's travels is sometimes thought of a children's book but there is so much underlying meaning. Britney Spears, called her 2009, forty–nine show tour through the US, Canada and the UK. Perhaps, more accurately, it is not so much that the circus goes on as that the circus has been revived in the American imagination. According to Robert Bogdan in his socio–historical study of the freak show in America, the popularity of the circus had run its course by the 1940s (60), attracting in its waning years a lower class of audience, such as new American immigrants, the rural poor and the urban working class (55). The exhibition of freaks had become morally incorrect. Strangely, at the turn of the twenty–first century, America is revealing a renewed fascination with freaks, a fascination that has not been so publicly apparent since the Victorian era when freak exhibits were all the rage, and not just for backward country folk waiting for the travelling circus to roll through town, but for sophisticated big city people who frequented P.T. Barnum's famous American Museum at Broadway and Ann Street in New York City. The kinds of popular culture that survive in the dystopia of Anne Washburn's play, Mr. Burns: A Post–Electric play addresses our own engagement with popular culture in many ways. The purposes of popular culture sometimes change or remain the same. Popular culture is with us throughout our lives in times of triumph and anxiety. Washburn's play focuses on a group of people who recall an episode of The Simpsons during a time of crisis. They compare lines and characters in order to better understand the environment around them and they talk about it to entertain themselves. Recalling an old episode was an activity for the characters to spend time during a period of nuclear disaster. This type of entertainment gives the audience interest, relief, and excitement in a dull boring life. Their form of engagement with popular culture is similar to ours through interaction and point of view. The first Act of Mr. Burns: A Post–Electric Play is set during a time of a dystopian society because of a nuclear disaster in the country. • 65. The History And Social Impact Of The Circus Freak Show The History and Social Impact of the Circus "Freak Show" Since it's humble beginning in the mid 16th century, the circus and "freak show" act has been entertaining and horrifying people to this day; however, in today's ultra–sensitive society, how has the classic "freak show" evolved to be deemed acceptable and be used to promote acceptance and positive views of people with abnormalities, rather than viewing these people as "freaks", as was the original purpose of the classic "freak show"? Popularized in the mid–16th century, the circus freak show became a common pastime in England. People with deformities and disabilities began being treated less as humans, and more as sources of interest and entrainment, and the crowds would gather to see these people exhibited. A notable early display was that of conjoined twins Lazarus and Johannes Baptista Colloredo. As described by History Magazine, "Lazarus was thought to be quite handsome, appearing otherwise perfectly healthy, but for his conjoined twin brother. Joannes Baptista protruded, upside down, from his brother's chest. He was significantly smaller than Lazarus, and only his upper body and left leg visibly extended from his brother's torso" (Strange and Bizarre:). Based off this description it is no wonder why the brothers became a popular exhibition at the court of King Charles I. Though the "freak show" was initially a display for the upper class, it would not take long for people to see the profitability of these acts. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These people are dangerous and should be kept far away from your children at all costs. Their outrageous cross–dressing habits are a threat to gender secure people everywhere. Gender secure people are clearly the only ones who can think logically and know exactly how to live their lives. Transgender people obviously have no idea what they are doing. Irony is most noticeable in how the author declares how transgender people have no idea who they are and gender secure people do. As the majority of society knows, every single person struggles with periods of self–identity issues. Nobody truly knows who they are supposed to be until they have spent some time sifting through their own mind. Irony is also evident in the sentence "Let's face it: do people really believe that someone who cross–dresses as the opposite sex can actually be brave or strong?" This sentence is ironic because it takes a great deal of strength bravery for transgender people to express themselves and show the world who they truly are. The satire also uses exaggeration, like in the writings of Jonathan Swift. For example, the satire says, "These cross– dressing freaks are little more than a circus sideshow attraction." This is exaggeration because although transgender people do cross–dress, they are not necessarily "circus freaks". They are real people who think and have feelings like those who are gender secure. These people are not sideshow attraction freaks who exist exclusively for people's entertainment. The new craze of "talkies" had just arrived on the silver screen, with this, came the genre of film, horror. Universal had already had their first major success with Tod Browning's 1931 film, Dracula. With this success under Browning's belt, MGM studios wanted to join the horror bandwagon. They offered Browning the opportunity the director the film, Freaks, which was an adaption of Tod Robbins's short story, Spurs. The original codes centered around two main points, films could not "lower the moral standards of those who see it" and "the sympathy of the audience shall never be thrown to the side of crime, wrongdoing, evil, or sin." Several scenes in Freaks violated these codes, the most notorious is the missing end to the movie.
