Essay Billie Holiday
Many jazz artists as we know it are quite talented. Their talents are unique in that they can translate
human emotion through singing or playing their instruments. Many have the ability to reach and
touch people s souls through their amazing gifts. Although this art of turning notes and lyrics into
emotional imagery may somewhat come natural, the audience must wonder where their influence
comes from. For Billie Holiday, her career was highly influenced by personal experience, the effects
of the Great Depression, and the racial challenges of African Americans during her time.
The Great Depression was a major historical event that affected thousands of Americans during the
1930s. It was a time in which economic decline left people without ... Show more content on

These first lines in the song portrays the longing and loneliness she felt. Further into the song
she sings, Soft winds blowing through the pinewood trees, folks down there live a life of ease.
Here, Billie sings about life down south and refers to Baltimore where she grew up. The soft
winds blowing through the pinewood trees can be construed as Baltimore. Folks down there live a
life of ease, compares the difficulties she endures in Harlem to the care free life somewhere else.
In 1933, during Billie Holiday s early years of her career, The Depression was now underway.
The few playing gigs in the music industry were taken by whites, and blacks faced insurmountable
odds. . . against achieving any sort of recognition without help. (Jackson, pg. 86) Billie stopped
working as a prostitute and began singing at night clubs and speakeasies in Harlem. The New York
nightlife is where John Hammond would discover her. He introduced her to many prestigious jazz
musicians and promoted her unparallel sound. Billie Holiday played on the radio where she
became recognized as a female singer within the jazz industry. Without the help of John Hammond,
Billie may not have had a chance as a singer. He is widely credited with having discovered many
of these artists, and while the use of that ambiguous word

Advantages Of Social Cognitive Learning Model
Bandura s social cognitive learning model is also known as social learning theory. This theory is
mainly described on learning through observation, call observational learning. Observational
learning is the learning and imitating of new behavior through watching the actions of a sample
model displayed.
Bandura started a research with Dorrie and Sheila Ross on children toward inflatable plastic
Bobo doll in 1961. The research is named The Bobo Doll Experiment. 72 children from preschool
were selected and three conditions were applied in this experiment. 24 children were allocated to
one of the three conditions. Besides, half of the children in same condition were been exposed to

Firstly, the learner may shape up the negative attitudes from observing aggressive videos or movies.
For example, a child watching a movie with many violence scenes, the child will act violently in
their daily life as they might thought that the behaviors observed are correct. Furthermore,
motivation is needed for observational learning. Learning by observation, the learner must have
high motivation as observational learning needs more concentration and attention for learning a
new behavior or new attitudes. As nowadays, the people are more relying on technology and

Hans Zimmer s Life And Accomplishments
Hans Zimmer is one of the most famous composers in the world. One can hear his music in a
multitude of video games, movies, and television shows. He has composed for movies like The
Lion King, The Prince of Egypt, Pearl Harbor, Batman Begins, and Gladiator. He is best known
for his work with electronic synthesizers and keyboards. His works are well renowned around the
world, and will be remembered throughout the ages. Hans Zimmer was born in Germany, but
was raised mostly in England (AllMusic). By the time he was six, he knew he wanted to be a
composer, despite having no formal musical training. When he was a teenager, he began to
compose advertising jingles for television commercials (Encyclopedia). He met British musicians
Geoff Downs and Trevor Horn when he was in his early twenties. Together, they formed the rock

Zimmer s next big hit was Gladiator, which garnered an Oscar nomination, as well as Golden

even more, and he also became the composer for films such as The Road to El Dorado, The Prince

Hans Zimmer is different than other film composers in that he does not perform live very often. In

Solution To Air Pollution
Air pollution is a serious problem in the world, but there is a way to deal with it. In other words,
the situation is not hopeless. In the articles, Lose 300 Million Tons of CO2 in Just Three Weeks!
and Miles to Go: Why Automakers Don t sell a Car that Gets 50 MPG, and the video of Tshering
Togbay: This country isn t just carbon neutral. These have a common problem of the air pollution;
also, these have similar solutions that people will reduce their using resources or protect with
other ways, such as using the nature to refresh the air or the eco resources. In the reading of
Lose 300 Million Tons of CO2 in Just Three Weeks! It is indeed a looking solution that is
upstream looking, but I see how this consumption can be reduced, as the average consumer of
carbon consumption cuts the caloric intake of food intake. Shepard s solution will implement a
carbon disclosure strategy so that it can destroy the earth and actually see what contributes to the
amount of atmospheric greenhouse gases that affect our health. It is that. In Another reading of
Miles to Go: Why Automakers Don t sell a Car that Gets 50 MPG, Automakers deliberately do not
develop cars that get more than 50 mpg because of the incestuous relationship between the oil
industry and the auto manufacturing industry both of which profit from more oil consumption,
which means less gas miles. Also, The video of the Tshering Tobgay: This country isn t just
carbon neutral shows that in the depths of Himalaya on the border between China and India, there
is the Kingdom of Bhutan. The Kingdom of Bhutan promises to stay neutral at all times. With this
bright story, Prime Minister Bhutan Tshering Tobgay shared the mission of bringing happiness
before economic growth and set the global standard for environmental conservation. There are
similarities; the first thing is the articles and the video talk about how the air pollution is
occurring. To develop our life, people need to destroy our environment. Second, people try to
solve the air pollution with other ways. For example, people will use other resources, or people try
to impede their development. These articles and video have different topics too. First, they chose to

Describe The Role Of Economic Sanctions In The United States
This paper focuses on economic sanctions target selection. It specifically examines which factors
include United States decision to impose economic sanctions. Sanctions are penalties levied against
another country, or individuals within a country. They are an instrument of national foreign policy
designed to apply economic pressure against their target in order to changes the target state s
behaviors or polices. Sanctions represent a wide variety of policy tools available for use as part of a
carrot and stick approach to international relations. As a distinct foreign policy tool, sanctions exist
within multiple categories. The number of countries imposing a sanction defines one category.
Unilateral sanctions are those imposed by a single country against a target. Multilateral sanctions
are those imposed by a group of countries, either in concert or represented by an international
institution, against another country. Sanctions imposed by the United Statesagainst another country
represent the former, while United Nations sanctions illustrate the latter category. Although
multilateral sanctions pose less risk for the implementing countries or body since no... Show more

Export sanctions block goods from entering into a targeted country, and import sanctions block
goods from leaving. Export sanction generally have less impact than import sanctions against a
country. Five primary forms of economic sanctions fit within these two types: tariffs, quotas,
embargoes, non tariff barriers, and asset seizure. Tariffs represent taxes on imported goods from the
targeted county, and quotes limited the quantity of imported or exported goods from a that country.
Embargoes restrict or prevent trade between countries, and non tariff barriers are import restrictions
that raises costs without being a specific tax. Finally, asset seizures prevent country or individual
assets from transfer or

Juvenile Delinquency in the Classroom Essays
In depicting juvenile delinquency in the classroom, a few film directors portrayed novice teachers
desire to reach what the school system customarily labeled as problem students. These films
illustrate that these students are often categorized quickly and unfairly, and hopeful intervention by
a few caring and zealous teachers is enough to change their lives and attitudes for the better.
In the black and white 1955 film Blackboard Jungle, Mr. Dadier (played by Glenn Ford) was an
idealistic teacher on his first job in a tough urban mostly white male high school. The characters
were dressed in clothing of the time (jeans rolled up at the cuffs, tee shirts, bow ties, baseball
caps) and the boys wore their hair in the Elvis Presley ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dadier made a connection with Artie West, which occurred after hard work and many failed
teaching efforts. Mr. Dadier finally realized how to breathe life into his lessons so that they
became meaningful to his students. He also showed respect for them by allowing them to
showcase their talents in the Christmas program. These two strategies combined were enough to
earn the respect of the classroom s gang leader. Artie West, in turn, put the word out to the other
students to work hard and behave in this teacher s class. Other teachers shared in Mr. Dadier s
success by stating that the momentum created in Mr. Dadier s English class had carried over into
their own classes. This movie had a positive outcome. Continued hard work would be necessary for
the positive change to continue. Blackboard Jungle opened and closed with Bill Haley and the
Comet s Rock Around the Clock , which helped stir quite a ruckus so much so, the film was banned
from many theatres. But the film s central point was nevertheless clear: students who we think are
aimless and recalcitrant only need the thoughtful guidance of a concerned teacher to make learning
meaningful and rewarding.
Twelve years after the release of Blackboard Jungle , Sidney Portier starred in yet another film
featuring juvenile delinquency in the classroom. To Sir With Love , filmed in 1967 a time when
there was great hostility in the

How Did Werner Heisenberg Change The World
Werner Heisenberg was a great physicist, but did he really change the world? Werner Heisenberg
was a German physicist and a key pioneer of mechanics. He played an important part in planning
the first West German nuclear reactor. He continued his work on atomic research through World
War II.
Werner Heisenberg was born in WГјrzburg, Germany, 1901. During school he studied physicsand
mathematics in college. He finished college during 1923. He completed his Habilitation in 1924,
at Göttingen. In 1937 Heisenberg married Elisabeth Schumacher. They have seven children, and
live in Munich. In 1927, Heisenberg was appointed ordentlicher Professor of theoretical physics
and head of the department of physics. During the same year he published the Uncertainty
Principle , which he built his philosophy and for which he is best known. After the discovery of
the neutron in 1932, Heisenberg submitted one paper on his neutron proton model of the nucleus.
That paper awarded him the Nobel Peace Prize in Physics during 1932. After Hitler took power,

indefinitely for successive 5 year terms. What amount should be amortized for the year ended
December 31, 2012?
1 . Alatorre should report the patent at $600,000 (net of $400,000 accumulated amortization) on the
balance sheet. The computation of accumulated amortization is as follows.
Amortization for 2005 and 2006 ($1,000,000/10) X 2 $200,000
2007 amortization: ($1,000,000 $200,000) Г· (6 2) 200,000
Accumulated amortization, 12/31/07 $400,000
2. Alatorre should amortize the franchise over its estimated useful life.
Because it is uncertain that Alatorre will be able to retain the franchise at the end of 2015, it
should be amortized over 10 years. The amount of amortization on the franchise for the year ended
December 31, 2007, is
$40,000: ($400,000/10).
3. These costs should be expensed as incurred. Therefore $275,000 of organization expense is
reported in income for 2007.
4. Because the license can be easily renewed (at nominal cost), it has an indefinite life. Thus, no
amortization will be recorded. The license will be tested for impairment in future periods.

Orr And Zuk Summary
In this chapter, Orr and Zuk explains the importance of ornaments of males and the mechanism
behind sexual selection. The questions that they seek to answer involve the fact that why are the
males fighting during mating season, and the ones with the colorful ornaments. In both human and
animal relationship, there are many similarities, such as the fact that the malefights for the female

The Origin explained that sexual selection involves competition, but for mating instead of fighting
for survival, in The Descent went on to explain the relevance of the traits like the peacock tails.
Ornaments that males have don t usually serve a purpose but usually becomes detrimental. Having

Benjamin Franklin
There is no doubt that Benjamin Franklin is one of the greatest Founding Fathers, if not one of the
greatest Americans ever to have lived. Franklin racked up numerous accolades throughout his 84
year life span and is also the only Founding Father to sign the Declaration of Independence, the
Treaty of Peace with Great Britain, and the United States Constitution. As a man who came from
humble beginnings, Franklin is the embodiment of a self made man. An incredibly driven human
being, Franklin sought out to improve himself day in and day out. In fact, he believed that success
was derived from self improvement. Franklin was a true believer of the American cause and
wanted only the absolute best for the newly founded society. Being the truly selfless and righteous
man he was, Franklin wrote an autobiography, not as an ostentatious or conceited act, but as a
guideline for other Americans to follow him on the route to self improvement. Franklin recounts
his hardships and triumphs to tell the story of how a man can make anything of himself as long as
puts his mind to it and keeps progressing forward.
Benjamin Franklin was born January 17, 1706 in Boston. Franklin was the youngest son of
seventeen children. Being the baby of the family didn t come with the benefits it does now. In this

Stereotypes In Gabriel Garcia Marquez s The Most Drowneded...
The Problem Of Stereotypes The world is full of stereotypes. Every person has been stereotypes
at least once in their lives. There have always been people who walk around and stereotype just
be first impressions. Yet, by seeing someone on the streets one can not make a complete
perception of that person, for the constant emotions that vary just be a walk by. Stereotypes
cause people to have an incomplete picture of others and can damage individuals and groups.
Stereotypes rob people from seeing them as a whole. There is a constant struggle with
stereotyping others before there is a real connections between one another. In Gabriel Garcia
Marquez s The Most Handsome Drowned Man In The World there are many examples of these
kinds of stereotypes. In The Most Handsome Drowned Man in the World it talks about the
stereotypes made by the woman of the dreary town They thought he was the most magnificent
man in the village. His wife would be the happiest woman. (Marquez) They took all of these
predictions based on the looks of the man. On e can not based the entire perception of a person
entirely on physical appearance. The woman s stereotypes did not cause peace among the village
as well. In the text is states the men exhausted from tortuous inquiries from the past night, all the
wanted to do was to be rid of the intruder who before the sun arose. By the woman gawking over a
man they never even knew caused tension to build up within the families of the town.

Oneness in Walden, Nature and American Scholar Essay
Oneness in Walden, Nature and American Scholar
Some of the most prominent works which express a relationship between the individual and nature
are undoubtedly Walden by Henry David Thoreau and the essays written by Ralph Waldo Emerson,
specifically Nature and The American Scholar. In each of these works, an idea of wholeness,
oneness, with nature is expressed. Thoreau and Emerson both believe that man, in order to live a
full, happy life, must live in harmony with nature. Both writers share several ideas as to how this
oneness with nature can be achieved, and its significance.
Emerson, in his Scholar address, states that nature is the most important influence on man and his
thinking. Because in nature there is no beginning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Emerson and Thoreau both urge people to go out and experience life for themselves instead of
merely reading about it. Reading is necessary for growth, but one should not depend on it to
change their lives; for that, they have to live simply in nature. In this way, to both authors, books
seem to be a direct hindrance to achieving the wholeness that nature offers because reading keeps
man from experiencing nature himself. Once they experience life s richness through nature, they
are better able to develop spiritually and experience the divine.
Emerson believed that man s mind is creative; he does not need only receive a sensory perception
of God, but can actually create a consciousness of God. In creating this consciousness, man
becomes god like. In this way, man can experience God, know God, not just know of Him, and
realize a way of life that is better (more god like) than his own. Emerson believed that this ideal, this
experiencing the divine, was possible through building a harmonious relationship with nature.
Thoreau saw this ideal way of life in nature as well. He believed that the key to this spiritually
rich, ideal existence was to simplify one s life. If one were to give up all unnecessary and
materialistic ties, and live with the bare necessities (fuel, clothing, shelter, food) then one may
spend more time concentrating on developing spiritually.

Baranczak And Trzeciak
In the Nobel Lecture written in 1996, Szymborska pinpoints the inspiration of her poetry by asking
the question I don t know . Szymborska continues to elaborate on this concept by stating it s just not
easy to explain to someone else what you don t understand yourself. Using this notion to pinpoint
the themes she develops throughout the context of her poems, she portrays The End and the
Beginning through two contradicting ideas that refer back to the concept of I don t know. The title
itself interprets a contrastof two opposite ideas, the end and the beginning. But what do these themes
represent? These two different perspectives are elaborated within each translation. The poem begins
by introducing this aspect, After every war someone... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Referring to the concept of the two perspectives, Szymborska s diction, tone, and imagery
introduces a theme of war. She titles the poem this way to express one perspective of war, which is
defined through the context of the poem, the end. This aspect is thoroughly emphasized through
Baranczak and Cavanaugh s translation. The diction provided by Baranczak and Cavanaugh s
translation provides the tone and imagery that form this poem. The descriptive element in this
literary work creates an effect of imagery. The audience can vividly comprehend the idea that
Szymborska introduces unlike Trzeciak s translation, which expresses a more concise tone. The
brevity of her translation makes the piece less descriptive and introduces little imagery. Baranczak
and Cavanaugh s translation acknowledges the tone of the poem, which is the acknowledgment of
the end of the war instead of the beginning. The meaning of the end and the beginning can reflect
multitudes of themes. Szymborska s diction introduces the theme of war. This theme is better
acknowledged through the descriptive and elaborative elements of Baranczak and Cavanaugh s

I Agree With Reservations With The Title
I agree with reservations with the title. For the purposes of this essay, the word describe will be
defined as the active act of either explaining or representing an idea or concept within an area of
knowledge. The word transform will be defined as having a great impact the world . Not to be
confused with change , here, transforming considers a degree of innovation, whilst change
highlights a minor shift. The word seek is key, and will represent the ideathat within the Area of
Knowledge, there can be the active intent to transform or describe.
One event can be interpreted as both transforming and describing, due to the room for subjective
judgement inherent in both of these two ideas. The concepts of description and transformation are
abstract in nature. The idea that one event has the capability of both describing and transforming
the world in different ways is evident in the area of knowledge of history. Here, the description of
the past has the potential to transform the present. The discovery of what happened behind China s
metaphorical walls would forever transform the way Mao and his regime was perceived. A specific
case of this is the French intellectuals involved in The Wind from the East: French Intellectuals, the
Cultural Revolution, and the Legacy of the 1960s which outlines first hand how a group of French
students were seduced by Mao s apparently pure ideology and the perceived cultural and
intellectual impact of the East during the 1960s. This is an

Major Influences On German Baroque Music
1. One of the major influences on German Baroque music was the church and the other major
influence was the state. Germany at that time wasn t how it is now. Germany was composed of
small states and each of those small states had its own Court. In some rare cases it also had Court
Musicians. The composers salary depended on their status and if they had the support of a king or
prince.
2. Bach s music had different forms and styles that came together and were brought to perfection.
He brought baroque music to the peak of its development. He left 48 Preludes and Fugues. This
meant the keyboard would adopt a new equal temperament which made enabled all keys to be
played equally.

AUDITING THE REVENUE CYCLE
Audit procedures associated with the revenue cycle is the main point in this report. Basically, it is
divided into three sections. First, it begins with a review of alternative technologies used in both
legacy and modern system. The focus is on the key operational task performed under each
technological environment. The second section discusses the revenue cycle audit objectives,
controls and test of controls that an auditor would perform to gather evidence needed to limit the
scope, timing and extent of substantive tests. The last section describes revenue cycle substantive
tests in relation to audit objectives.

In our system, the credit authorization copy of the sales order is sent to the credit department for
approval. The returned approval triggers the release of the other sales order copies simultaneously
to various departments. The credit copy is filed in the customer open order file until the transaction
is complete.
3. Processing Shipping Orders The final step is the processing of shipping orders. The sales
department sends the stock release copy of the sale order to the warehouse. After picking the stock,
the clerk initials the stock release copy to indicate that the order is complete and accurate. The clerk
then adjusts the stock records to reflect the reduction in inventory. Updating the inventory

operation. The computer system described here is an example of a legacy system that employs the
sequential file structure for its accounting records. Both tapes and disks can be used as the physical
storage medium for such system. However the use of tapes has declined considerably in recent
years. Most organizations that still use sequential files store them on disks that are permanently
connected it the computer system and require no human intervention.

What Is The Gradient Of A Graph
From the graph shown in Figure 6, it can be seen that the data has a linear relationship where
y=0.0715 x. The extremely high r squared value of 0.9988 for the graph shows that a linear
trendline is appropriate for the data set. The gradient of this graph can be used to calculate the
constant of magnetism (k) which then can be compared against its actual value to determine the
percentage error present in the results. As I_OUT MAX=(4ПЂ^2 fkN_1 N_2 I)/RL A, the gradient
of a graph where peak output current is graphed against peak input current the gradient is equal to

Analysis Of The Poem I Am I m Charlotte Wasserman
Hello, I m Charlotte Wasserman, and today I will be sharing my journey in poetry writing. I
began to love poetry in the sixth grade. I had never written that much before, but I discovered
that I get this inspirational feeling when I write poetry that I never get in anything else.
Sometimes my poems seemed good from the start; some I knew needed a little help. I think
some of my best poems were revised over and over. Just remember, I d rather have a rough draft
in the beginning and have a great piece at the end than to never write or try at all!
Let s talk about imagery; imagery is a skill in poetry writing. I have grown in my ability to show
imagery this year, and I think I m great at this skill. It makes the reader form a picture in his or
her head. So, I have two pieces that are nothing alike, except they show how imagery can be used
in separate ways. Imagery is an important skill that all writers should know of. It can make every
creative piece 100 percent better. This first piece I m sharing today is not the best, but you will
listen to the difference and growth between my first and second piece. My first piece I ll be reading
today is called Beneficial. It was one of our vocabulary words!

Research Paper On Cholelera
This day in age, contracting cholera is not something people worry about in the United States. The
United States was able to escape this worry because of effective public health measures and other
resources. However, in third world countries such as Haiti, a cholera outbreak is a frequent worry.
Cholera is caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, found in contaminated waters. Symptoms of
cholerainclude diarrhea, dehydration, increased heart rate, muscle cramps, low blood pressure, and
dry mouth, throat, nose and eyelids (WebMD 2014). In industrialized countries, the implementation
of water treatment facilities and sewage has eradicated cholera. Cholera is easily treated, by simply
following rehydration methods. Cholera was a seemingly easy... Show more content on

Cholera, transmitted by contaminated food and water. When the disease arrived in New York
City in summer 1832, after traveling over trade routes from India through Russia and Europe
across the Atlantic to Canada and down the Hudson River Valley, thousand of citizens died
within weeks. Cholera struck again in 1849 and 1866 before New Yorkers learned how to
contain the disease. Measuring the reaction of New Yorkers to these increasingly traumatic
public health disasters shows how understandings of disease were filtered through contemporary
ideas about class and social relations, conceptions of immigrants, and thinking about the
responsibilities of the city s government in issues of public health in mid nineteenth century New
York. The first documented case of cholera was on June 24, 1832 in NYC (McNamara 2015). In
the 1830s immigrants began to flood New York City, they often lived in poor conditions with
compacted living areas. Along with immigrants, there was a small free black community in
Manhattan ( History of Cholera in NYC 2012). So the city was packed with different people
from all over, many were living in poverty and horses and pigs ran freely in the streets. The
environment became crowded and dirty, the perfect breeding ground for disease. Without a
proper sewage system, human waste found its way into the City s water supply. As the
population of the City grew denser, several outbreaks of cholera occurred. Nearly 100,00 people
fled to the countryside, when cholera hit the NYC (McNamara 2015). Many wealthy New Yorkers
and those more well off, fled the city during cholera outbreaks in search of more hospitable
environment. Those who owned buildings throughout the city refused to lease their spaces for
hospitals, in fear of contamination. Most doctors worked to reduce the suffering of cholera victims.
During that time, medical knowledge was limited and so were

Advantages Of Haar Transform
INTRODUCTION Some people suffer severe motor impairments cannot express their thoughts as
healthy for assistance of patients and can be controlled by user alone. It uses EEG signals as
input and produces output signals in the form of inverse DWT. Communication system between
human brain and computer is called BCI. This enables generation of control signals from brain
signals, such as sensory motor rhythms and evoked potentials, therefore persons, because they are
not capable of talking or moving. But still they are conscious and capable of performing mental
tasks equivalent to healthy individual, using brain signals. The communication system for person
with severe disabilities helps him to express thoughts for translating their actions into activity
using BCI. The advantage of the proposed work is, there is no need of any caretakers, it
constitutes a good communication option for people with severe motor disabilities. The recording
of electrical activity of brain is called as Electroencephalogram (EEG). The user thoughts are

looking at discrete wavelet transform. It is easy to understand, since it performs all operations
in the time domain, rather than in the frequency domain, and has other advantages as well. This
section illustrates the lifting approach using the Haar Transform . The Haar transform is based
on the calculations of the averages (approximation co efficient) and differences (detail co

Gun Regulation Laws
Great attention has been paid to the question of gun regulation in the United States. The prevalence
of firearms, despite their original intention to protect citizens, has resulted in a series of mass
killings by gunmen in civilian settings and has prompted a national discussion over gun laws to
limit the availability of military style assault weapons (Master). At the outset, it is imperative to
question the validity of weapon distribution to the public. Gunownership laws in the United States
are fairly flexible compared with other countries, and recent mass shootings have raised arguments
about banning private gun ownership. Regarding this issue, Rutgers University Professor Jeff
McMahan has argued that American citizens lives are threatened... Show more content on

The essence of the gun regulation argument is that guns cause irreversible harm when used
inappropriately in times of high emotion or mistaken identity and guns can accidentally kill an
innocent child or bystander. The increasing crime rate drives some citizens to own firearms, and a
prohibition on gun privatization does not seem realistic. Therefore, the distribution of non lethal
weapons to both citizens and police officers would decrease the crime rate in the United States.
Advances in less lethal technology offer the promise of more effective control over resistive
suspects with fewer serious injuries (Susan). Although policymakers and law enforcement officials
debate the safety and effectiveness of non lethal weapons, such weapons are certainly a plausible
solution to the gun regulation argument. While technological advances continue to provide U.S.
forces with decided advantages over potential adversaries, the emergence of non lethal weapons
technologies also promises to provide additional advantages to police officers and citizens. The
main advantage of non lethal weapons is that one s actions usually do not result in the death of the
attacker. Rather than causing death, non lethal weapons only incapacitate as their primary goal.
Moreover, non lethal weapons minimize liability for injury or damage caused by accidents.
Because non lethal weapons only physically disable an attacker, their use carries much less

Alexander Graham Bell was a notable scientist and engineer that changed the world with his
invention of the telephone. Without the telephone, everyone would not have a reliable
communication device. Alexander Graham Bell is considered one of the most influential people in
human history.
Early Life ~ Alexander Graham Bell was born on March 3rd, 1847 at his family home, 16 South

adopt the middle name Graham for his eleventh birthday, after pleading with his father. To friends
and family, he was known as Aleck .
Bell, from a young age, displayed a level of intelligence. He was known to experiment and collect
plant specimens, and invented a wheat dehusking machine for his neighbor. While Bell attended
school, though, he often skipped school and had poor grades. He dropped out of high school
when he was fifteen. However, Bell had a great interest in multiple areas of science. He earned a

1 Choose three basic needs and give a personal example of how you use communication to fulfill
each of the needs. (Chapter 1)
Three basic needs include affection, inclusion and control following which Maslow has proposed
his hierarchy of needs.
First, Physiological needs which include food, water and oxygen. In order to buy food and
water, I have to communicate with grocery store s manager and clerks, I have to communicate
with cashiers to pay for my shopping. Also, I need to go to the doctor s office regularly to check
my health. I have to communicate with the secretary to book an appointment, talk to the nurses
about my concerns and finally talk to the doctor about my problem. Moreover, I may need to go to
the lab for some blood tests or do the ultrasounds. They all need communication with staffs, doctors
as well as communicating with pharmacy assistants or pharmacist to get my medications.
Second, safety needs which include comfort, security, freedom from fear, freedom from violence.
For example, once there was a rubbery from our locker. So we informed the security guard of our
condo and after filling the report form, we called the police so that they could find the thief.
Finally, belongingness and love needs which include affiliation, acceptance and belongingness. For

I weep for the liberty of my country when I see at this early day of its successful experiment that
corruption has been imputed to many members of the House of Representatives, and the rights of
the people have been bartered for promises of office (Andrew Jackson). Corruption and abuse of
power by aristocrats is the driving force of the plot in A Tale of Two Cities
. In fact, it was the chief
cause of the French revolution. The book chronicles the enterprises of several revolutionaries, such
as Madame Defarge and The Vengeance, as they attempted to overthrow the aristocrats and their
crooked ways. Both the French aristocrats and Madame Defarge became corrupt on account of

If I knew which rascal threw at the carriage, [...] he should be crushed under the wheels. (Dickens
85) The actions and words of the Marquis vividly portray his character: a self centered,
iniquitous, snob who has zero interest in the welfare of others. Another specimen chronicled by
the tale of the aristocrat s utter indifference to the common people s plight is the lifestyle of the
Monseigneur. While the masses were starving from lack of food and poverty, the Monseigneur
lived as though he were a king. Yes. It took four men, all four ablaze with gorgeous decoration, and
the Chief of them unable to exist with fewer than two gold watches in his pocket, emulative of the
noble and chaste fashion set by Monseigneur, to conduct the happy chocolate to Monseigneur s lips.
(Dickens 79) Therefore, we see that the Monseigneur, too, had much the same attitude as the
Marquis, and, as can be reasonably inferred, he same attitude as the vast majority of the other
aristocrats. Consequently, we can conclude that nearly all of the aristocrats were corrupt in their
ways.
In response to their cruel treatment by the aristocrats, the common people rebelled and began the
revolution, with the intent of deposing all of the corrupt aristocrats and their ways. However, the
revolution many of the common people corrupt themselves. For instance, while Madame Defarge
started out with the intention of doing away with the aristocrats and their corrupt ways, she became
a bloodthirsty serial killer

Genetic Engineering Of Food Products Essay
Genetic engineering of food produce is considered a miracle technology. Many speculate that
this discovery has the possibility to end world hunger. By mass producing and marketing
produce, the associated costs will decrease. With lower production costs for crops, healthy
options will not only be more accessible, but more affordable for customers as well. Some even
contend that the overall health of the general population will improve. How does this affect the
healthcare industry? If we can genetically modify food, why not humans? By accepting and
utilizing engineered produce as a viable food source, many express it would eliminate the need for
trade, because each country would be capable of producing its own food. Which corporation(s)
would corner the market? If genetically engineered goods permeate the market, a trading would
become obsolete. An intense plunge in the value of produce would agitate the stock market. The
eradication of trading produce would cripple most, if not all, economies (Gandel, 2010). Though
genetic engineeringof food has drawbacks, the benefits arguably may manage to outweigh them.
The total dissolution of world hunger is an impressive feat. But, do the perceived benefits of genetic
engineering make the hassle of starting a business worthwhile? Have the potential threats to
democracy along with the socioeconomic implications associated with the utilization of new and
emerging humanengineering technologies thoroughly been considered?

Petrarch s Influence On Christianity
Two humanist ideas that defined the age of the Renaissance were the idea that man could achieve
and leaning away from the Christian world view. The enforcement of the idea that man could
achieve led people to valuing their strengths more than they did before. Leaning away from the
Christian world view let people experience a different type of lifestyle. Upholding the humanistic
concept of man could achieve enabled the citizens of Europeto hold their abilities to higher
standards, leading to achievement. In The Ascent of Mount Ventoux, Petrarch wrote about his

In The Ascent of Mount Ventoux , Petrarch mentioned that the main reason behind his ascent was
only to see the view from the highest peak. This exhibited the leaning away from Christian
reasoning by showing that Petrarch did not do everything to deepen his Christian faith, but for
his own self exploration. In Primavera , Botticelli displayed figures from Roman mythology, such
as Venus and the Three Graces. This showed that incorporating not only Christian figures into art,
but ones from the Greco Roman culture actually helped people advance in society, like Botticelli
did. In The Prince , Machiavelli said that the proper prince s actions should not be restricted by
moral considerations. Machiavelli proved that by doing what is necessary, a prince could be more
successful than if he were to follow the Christian morals that were deemed so high during the
Middle Ages. The idea that Europeans could wean themselves from following every Christian moral
consideration helped the advancement of society because now people were able to branch out into

found himself locked up in a jail in Dubai. He was held Captive for 56 days. In one of the songs
he produced, he told his tale of captivity and how it felt to be amongst a culture that is completely
different from your own. He states in the song that he felt as if he were an alien among the people
of Dubai. This is an example of a captivity narrative. Captivity narratives are usually stories of
people captured by enemies whom they consider uncivilized, or whose beliefs and customs they
oppose. A few other examples of captivity narratives include, Twelve Years a Slave (2013) by
Solomon Northup, Olaudah Equianos Narrative (1789), and a more up to... Show more content on

In the film, Bass asks Edwin Epps about the treatment and conditions of his slaves, which were
horrid, and Epps replies with, They ain t hired help. They re my property. (McQueen) One last
example of people being held captive would be the Iranian Hostage Crisis. 52 hostages were held
in an embassy for 444 days. While they were never severely injured, the hostages endured awful
treatment by their captors; they were displayed in front of cameras blindfolded, they could not talk,
read, or change clothes. (Iran Hostage Crisis) There are a number of ways one can escape captivity,
according to these narratives. In Equiano s narrative, he achieves freedom by purchasing it from
his owner, Robert King, for 40 pounds. What! said he, give you your freedom? Why, where did
you get the money; have you got forty pounds sterling? Yes sir, I answered. How did you get it ;
replied he; I told him, Very honestly. The captain then said he knew I got the money very honestly,
and with much industry, and that I was particularly careful. (Equiano 719 720) In Twelve Years a
Slave, Northup gains his freedom by escaping Louisiana and fleeing to New York and thus gaining
his freedom in 1853. The

Thesis For The Things They Carried
Love and War
In Tim O Brien s story called The Things They Carried he writes about how a group of soldiers,
who are in Vietnamese, are caring items that are important to them. Lieutenant Cross carries letters
from Martha because he loves her. While he is day dreaming of Martha instead of watching out for
his team, Lavender gets shots and dies. Cross feels guilty about Lavenders death because he was
thinking about Martha; so he burns everything she gave him and he keeps himself and the rest of
the soldiers on point.
Two external conflicts that readers see are American soldiers fighting against Vietnam soldiers and
American soldiers battling nature. Readers see how this story take place during a war against
American vs. Vietnamese and how a group of American soldiers fight through the weather and
Vietnamese soldiers to stay alive. An internal conflict that readers could see in Cross is guilt. He
blames himself for the death of Lavender because he was concentrated on Martha.
O Brien wrote this story in third person point of view and is complete omniscient. The narrator is
unknown never revealing who he is. The thoughts readers can see are the thoughts of Lieutenant
Cross, and Kiowa.
This story takes place in the jungle of Vietnam. Readers see how a group of army is unfamiliar with
the jungle and that frightens them. They each carry closely specific items that are meaningful ...

Personal Responsibility To Become Well-Behaved Students
When individuals are being responsible for themselves, often others tend to rely on the
accountable individuals. Like the character Fujiko, I, too have experienced taking responsibility
for someone else. When I was in Japan, I was very serious about studying and being a good student.
I was always on time for every class, homework was always perfectly done, and studied excessively
hard for the tests. I took full responsibilityfor myself in order to achieve my goal of having higher
marks on my report card. I was one of the individuals who had more focusing on the personal
responsibility. Personal responsibility motivates individuals to become well behaved students in the
class, which allows them to win the trust and reputation from other students

The Conflict Over The Expansion Of Slavery Into New...
Discuss the various compromises that attempted to resolve the conflicts over the expansion of
slavery into new territories. In what ways were they successful? Why, ultimately, did these
compromises fail? (5 points) There were many legal hoops that the Federal Government had to
jump through to resolve the expansion of slavery. One of which was the Three Fourths
Compromise, which stated that three fourths of slaves counted towards the total state s population
so the associated state could have more seats in the House of Representatives. In theory, this was
supposed to balance out the population discrepancies between the North and South so both had
equal power in the House. Another cooperation between State and Federal was the Missouri... Show

With increased education and European ideals bleeding over to America people started to change
and see that everyone, blacks, and whites, were the same and following the Christian ideals of the
time saw that slavery of another person, not the property was wrong. Describe the circumstances
surrounding the Dred Scott case. How did this decision impact the sectional crisis? (2 points)
Dred Scott was an African American who traveled to the North with his owners and when they
attempted to sue his owners for slavery for it was not allowed in the free state that they went to.
The case gained so much momentum that it was brought to the Supreme Court to rule upon. The
court ruled in 7 2 deinging Dred Scott s request and ruling against congress saying it was
unconstitutional. The court s rationale is that a black man no matter in the north or south could
never be considered citizens of the United States or be protected by the United States Constitution
The decision impacted the sectional crisis by outraging both Republicans and Abolitionist
movements that were gaining momentum in the North. The argument about allowing slavery into
new states also started radicals like John Brown to try and start a slave rebellion when he
committed to raiding Harpers Ferry. The debate of allowing or getting rid of Slavery has stopped
being diplomatic and started to turn violent. What was Bleeding Kansas? How did this conflict
reflect larger sectional issues? (3

Essay about The Shawl
Many times in stories, authors will use the setting to set the stage for the story. The setting is like
the foundation of the story, and without one the story seems merely lost. Quite often the setting
will build up the story and affect the characters, and the characters behaviors. Against the backdrop
of a Holocaust concentration camp, Ozick produces two static characters whose lack of
development throughout the story emphasizes the theme of overwhelming hopelessness. In The
Shawl Rosa, her infant daughter Magda, and her fourteen year old companion Stella are Jews
interned in a concentration camp during World War II. Amazingly the infant Magda has survived
with her mother, hidden and protected in a shawl. If the Nazis ever learn of... Show more content on

They see how peaceful Magda is with the shawl, and it is killing both of them inside. During the
whole story, these thoughts and emotions are going through both Rosa and Stella s mind. Later
in the story, Stella steals the shawl away from Magda. Magda now starts to behave peculiar like
the two women before. She is no longer silent and mute, she now walks on her own and is crying.
However, later Rosa steals the shawl back from Stella for herself. She could fly, she was only air
into the arena. The sunheat murmured of another life, of butterflies in the summer . As you can see
this shawl was powerful to them, and with it they seemed in their own imaginary world. These
thoughts and feelings are not ones from a healthy human being. It was this time of tribulation and
hard times that made these girls so attached to such a simple item. These characters had nothing,
they were in a concentration camp, and the shawl was the only thing they could rely on, so they
made this shawl their dream. If this story would have had a different, or more peaceful setting, then
these characters may have been able to establish more character traits. However due to the
concentration camp background, these characters had absolutely nothing, but a shawl. Therefore,
the setting was a crucial part of this story. The setting also affected the characters behaviors and
thoughts. There is not a time in

Lance Armstrong and Overcoming Obstacles Essays
Pedaling strong through the Pyrenees Mountains at remarkable speed, Lance Armstrong
approached the tenth stage of the Tour de France. Beginning at an elevation of thirty three feet
above sea level, Armstrong was in sixteenth position with five minutes and fifty four seconds
separating him and the leader. For many this would be an insurmountable amount of time to
makeup, especially on a stage containing such a grueling and exhausting climb, but Armstrong saw
it as an opportunity to put his great mountain climbing skills to work (Stein60). Pacing himself
through the majority of the stage, he remained well behind the leader. Then it happened; he reached
the horrendous Mount Hautacam, and began his eight mile sprint through the rain and up... Show

The most grueling climb in Stage 10, Mount Hautacam, was ranked hors de categorie, meaning the
ascent to the top is so steep it cannot be appointed a specific number (Thomsen 42). It is the Tour s
way of saying, You [sic] don t want to know (Murphy 38).
One by one, Lance picked away at his competitors, leaving them with nothing but exhaustion. After
a punishing climb of 4,954 feet over one hundred twenty seven miles,
Armstrong finished Stage 10 with an overall first place. Creating a four minute and fourteen second
margin between him and the previous leader, Armstrong had gained a total of more than ten
minutes during the most grueling stage throughout the entire Tour de France (Stein 60). He then
raced through the remaining stages with great momentum and victoriously broke across the finish
line on July 23, 2000 for the second consecutive time since his diagnosis of cancer (Sterling 2;
Armstrong, Lance ).
This accomplishment would be remarkable for anyone, but for a cancer survivor to attain such a
feat is extraordinary. Lance Armstrong is indeed an extraordinary human being. He has achieved
tremendous heights not only in the highly competitive world of cycling but also in common,
everyday life. To many he is a champion, to others a role model, but no matter how he s viewed,
he is an inspiration to everyone. After being diagnosed with cancer, Lance Armstrong fought back
courageously and showed the world what a true hero really is.

Blue Collar Brilliance

Essay 1
In my observation mentally with Mr. Roses essay on blue collar brilliance, Mr Rose tries to tell
the reader on the different levelsof work there is for high educated people opposed to the non
educated. Furthermore he tries express through his family experiences in the work environment
how a person with a manual labor is not so different than a person with a high level of education,
they are equal in job to job views but not in society. My mother Rose Mesaglio (Rosie), shaped her
idenity as a waitress in coffee shops and family resteraunts (Rose, 2009) This is by far one of my
favorite statements offered by Rose, from my own experiences in the work field. I like Rose s

A book can not tell you about the reality of the world and its work enviroment, that taught
through doing not reading. In conlcusion I have pointed out the difference between a college
grad opposed to a non educated person, are they so different? Its sad how society labels people by
lack of eduaction. If some of these so called high classed eduacated people would take the time
and actually do a job outside of there world, would nt that also be considered Learning ? Think
about it, to beccome humbled by your own actions is a learning experience. Society today has a
very low sense of understanding about blue collar and white collar jobs. They only look at the
cover as opposed to what really lies inside. I firmly believe that society needs a reality check as to
really does all the work to make the world move as it does. Also in my honest opinion learning on
the job can or is more beneficial than what any college or school can teach about a trade. So next
time you see a landscaper, waitress, or maybe even pizza delivery man, think about how hard that
person works to make that company succeed, its not the owner who does it. A company is as good
as its employees, bottom line.

  • 2. Essay Billie Holiday Many jazz artists as we know it are quite talented. Their talents are unique in that they can translate human emotion through singing or playing their instruments. Many have the ability to reach and touch people s souls through their amazing gifts. Although this art of turning notes and lyrics into emotional imagery may somewhat come natural, the audience must wonder where their influence comes from. For Billie Holiday, her career was highly influenced by personal experience, the effects of the Great Depression, and the racial challenges of African Americans during her time. The Great Depression was a major historical event that affected thousands of Americans during the 1930s. It was a time in which economic decline left people without ... (Jackson, pg. 86) Billie stopped working as a prostitute and began singing at night clubs and speakeasies in Harlem. The New York nightlife is where John Hammond would discover her. He introduced her to many prestigious jazz musicians and promoted her unparallel sound. Billie Holiday played on the radio where she became recognized as a female singer within the jazz industry. Without the help of John Hammond, Billie may not have had a chance as a singer. He is widely credited with having discovered many of these artists, and while the use of that ambiguous word ... • 6. Solution To Air Pollution Air pollution is a serious problem in the world, but there is a way to deal with it. In other words, the situation is not hopeless. In the articles, Lose 300 Million Tons of CO2 in Just Three Weeks! and Miles to Go: Why Automakers Don t sell a Car that Gets 50 MPG, and the video of Tshering Togbay: This country isn t just carbon neutral. These have a common problem of the air pollution; also, these have similar solutions that people will reduce their using resources or protect with other ways, such as using the nature to refresh the air or the eco resources. In the reading of Lose 300 Million Tons of CO2 in Just Three Weeks! It is indeed a looking solution that is upstream looking, but I see how this consumption can be reduced, as the average consumer of carbon consumption cuts the caloric intake of food intake. Shepard s solution will implement a carbon disclosure strategy so that it can destroy the earth and actually see what contributes to the amount of atmospheric greenhouse gases that affect our health. It is that. In Another reading of Miles to Go: Why Automakers Don t sell a Car that Gets 50 MPG, Automakers deliberately do not develop cars that get more than 50 mpg because of the incestuous relationship between the oil industry and the auto manufacturing industry both of which profit from more oil consumption, which means less gas miles. Also, The video of the Tshering Tobgay: This country isn t just carbon neutral shows that in the depths of Himalaya on the border between China and India, there is the Kingdom of Bhutan. The Kingdom of Bhutan promises to stay neutral at all times. With this bright story, Prime Minister Bhutan Tshering Tobgay shared the mission of bringing happiness before economic growth and set the global standard for environmental conservation. There are similarities; the first thing is the articles and the video talk about how the air pollution is occurring. To develop our life, people need to destroy our environment. Second, people try to solve the air pollution with other ways. For example, people will use other resources, or people try to impede their development. It specifically examines which factors include United States decision to impose economic sanctions. Sanctions are penalties levied against another country, or individuals within a country. They are an instrument of national foreign policy designed to apply economic pressure against their target in order to changes the target state s behaviors or polices. Sanctions represent a wide variety of policy tools available for use as part of a carrot and stick approach to international relations. As a distinct foreign policy tool, sanctions exist within multiple categories. The number of countries imposing a sanction defines one category. Unilateral sanctions are those imposed by a single country against a target. Multilateral sanctions are those imposed by a group of countries, either in concert or represented by an international institution, against another country. • 9. Juvenile Delinquency in the Classroom Essays In depicting juvenile delinquency in the classroom, a few film directors portrayed novice teachers desire to reach what the school system customarily labeled as problem students. These films illustrate that these students are often categorized quickly and unfairly, and hopeful intervention by a few caring and zealous teachers is enough to change their lives and attitudes for the better. In the black and white 1955 film Blackboard Jungle, Mr. Dadier (played by Glenn Ford) was an idealistic teacher on his first job in a tough urban mostly white male high school. The characters were dressed in clothing of the time (jeans rolled up at the cuffs, tee shirts, bow ties, baseball caps) and the boys wore their hair in the Elvis Presley ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dadier made a connection with Artie West, which occurred after hard work and many failed teaching efforts. Mr. Dadier finally realized how to breathe life into his lessons so that they became meaningful to his students. He also showed respect for them by allowing them to showcase their talents in the Christmas program. These two strategies combined were enough to earn the respect of the classroom s gang leader. Artie West, in turn, put the word out to the other students to work hard and behave in this teacher s class. Other teachers shared in Mr. Dadier s success by stating that the momentum created in Mr. Dadier s English class had carried over into their own classes. This movie had a positive outcome. Continued hard work would be necessary for the positive change to continue. Blackboard Jungle opened and closed with Bill Haley and the Comet s Rock Around the Clock , which helped stir quite a ruckus so much so, the film was banned from many theatres. But the film s central point was nevertheless clear: students who we think are aimless and recalcitrant only need the thoughtful guidance of a concerned teacher to make learning meaningful and rewarding. Twelve years after the release of Blackboard Jungle , Sidney Portier starred in yet another film featuring juvenile delinquency in the classroom. To Sir With Love , filmed in 1967 a time when there was great hostility in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As a man who came from humble beginnings, Franklin is the embodiment of a self made man. An incredibly driven human being, Franklin sought out to improve himself day in and day out. In fact, he believed that success was derived from self improvement. Franklin was a true believer of the American cause and wanted only the absolute best for the newly founded society. Being the truly selfless and righteous man he was, Franklin wrote an autobiography, not as an ostentatious or conceited act, but as a guideline for other Americans to follow him on the route to self improvement. Franklin recounts his hardships and triumphs to tell the story of how a man can make anything of himself as long as puts his mind to it and keeps progressing forward. • 19. Oneness in Walden, Nature and American Scholar Essay Oneness in Walden, Nature and American Scholar Some of the most prominent works which express a relationship between the individual and nature are undoubtedly Walden by Henry David Thoreau and the essays written by Ralph Waldo Emerson, specifically Nature and The American Scholar. In each of these works, an idea of wholeness, oneness, with nature is expressed. Thoreau and Emerson both believe that man, in order to live a full, happy life, must live in harmony with nature. Both writers share several ideas as to how this oneness with nature can be achieved, and its significance. Emerson, in his Scholar address, states that nature is the most important influence on man and his thinking. Because in nature there is no beginning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Emerson and Thoreau both urge people to go out and experience life for themselves instead of merely reading about it. Reading is necessary for growth, but one should not depend on it to change their lives; for that, they have to live simply in nature. In this way, to both authors, books seem to be a direct hindrance to achieving the wholeness that nature offers because reading keeps man from experiencing nature himself. Once they experience life s richness through nature, they are better able to develop spiritually and experience the divine. Emerson believed that man s mind is creative; he does not need only receive a sensory perception of God, but can actually create a consciousness of God. In creating this consciousness, man becomes god like. In this way, man can experience God, know God, not just know of Him, and realize a way of life that is better (more god like) than his own. Emerson believed that this ideal, this experiencing the divine, was possible through building a harmonious relationship with nature. Thoreau saw this ideal way of life in nature as well. He believed that the key to this spiritually rich, ideal existence was to simplify one s life. If one were to give up all unnecessary and materialistic ties, and live with the bare necessities (fuel, clothing, shelter, food) then one may spend more time concentrating on developing spiritually. ... Szymborska continues to elaborate on this concept by stating it s just not easy to explain to someone else what you don t understand yourself. Using this notion to pinpoint the themes she develops throughout the context of her poems, she portrays The End and the Beginning through two contradicting ideas that refer back to the concept of I don t know. The descriptive element in this literary work creates an effect of imagery. The audience can vividly comprehend the idea that Szymborska introduces unlike Trzeciak s translation, which expresses a more concise tone. For the purposes of this essay, the word describe will be defined as the active act of either explaining or representing an idea or concept within an area of knowledge. The word transform will be defined as having a great impact the world . Not to be confused with change , here, transforming considers a degree of innovation, whilst change highlights a minor shift. The word seek is key, and will represent the ideathat within the Area of Knowledge, there can be the active intent to transform or describe. One event can be interpreted as both transforming and describing, due to the room for subjective judgement inherent in both of these two ideas. The concepts of description and transformation are abstract in nature. The idea that one event has the capability of both describing and transforming the world in different ways is evident in the area of knowledge of history. Here, the description of the past has the potential to transform the present. A specific case of this is the French intellectuals involved in The Wind from the East: French Intellectuals, the Cultural Revolution, and the Legacy of the 1960s which outlines first hand how a group of French students were seduced by Mao s apparently pure ideology and the perceived cultural and intellectual impact of the East during the 1960s. I had never written that much before, but I discovered that I get this inspirational feeling when I write poetry that I never get in anything else. Sometimes my poems seemed good from the start; some I knew needed a little help. I think some of my best poems were revised over and over. Just remember, I d rather have a rough draft in the beginning and have a great piece at the end than to never write or try at all! Let s talk about imagery; imagery is a skill in poetry writing. I have grown in my ability to show imagery this year, and I think I m great at this skill. It makes the reader form a picture in his or her head. So, I have two pieces that are nothing alike, except they show how imagery can be used in separate ways. Imagery is an important skill that all writers should know of. It can make every creative piece 100 percent better. This first piece I m sharing today is not the best, but you will listen to the difference and growth between my first and second piece. When the disease arrived in New York City in summer 1832, after traveling over trade routes from India through Russia and Europe across the Atlantic to Canada and down the Hudson River Valley, thousand of citizens died within weeks. Cholera struck again in 1849 and 1866 before New Yorkers learned how to contain the disease. Measuring the reaction of New Yorkers to these increasingly traumatic public health disasters shows how understandings of disease were filtered through contemporary ideas about class and social relations, conceptions of immigrants, and thinking about the responsibilities of the city s government in issues of public health in mid nineteenth century New York. The first documented case of cholera was on June 24, 1832 in NYC (McNamara 2015). In the 1830s immigrants began to flood New York City, they often lived in poor conditions with compacted living areas. Along with immigrants, there was a small free black community in Manhattan ( History of Cholera in NYC 2012). So the city was packed with different people from all over, many were living in poverty and horses and pigs ran freely in the streets. The environment became crowded and dirty, the perfect breeding ground for disease. Without a proper sewage system, human waste found its way into the City s water supply. As the population of the City grew denser, several outbreaks of cholera occurred. Nearly 100,00 people fled to the countryside, when cholera hit the NYC (McNamara 2015). Many wealthy New Yorkers and those more well off, fled the city during cholera outbreaks in search of more hospitable environment. Those who owned buildings throughout the city refused to lease their spaces for hospitals, in fear of contamination. Most doctors worked to reduce the suffering of cholera victims. The prevalence of firearms, despite their original intention to protect citizens, has resulted in a series of mass killings by gunmen in civilian settings and has prompted a national discussion over gun laws to limit the availability of military style assault weapons (Master). At the outset, it is imperative to question the validity of weapon distribution to the public. Gunownership laws in the United States are fairly flexible compared with other countries, and recent mass shootings have raised arguments about banning private gun ownership. Regarding this issue, Rutgers University Professor Jeff McMahan has argued that American citizens lives are threatened... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The essence of the gun regulation argument is that guns cause irreversible harm when used inappropriately in times of high emotion or mistaken identity and guns can accidentally kill an innocent child or bystander. The increasing crime rate drives some citizens to own firearms, and a prohibition on gun privatization does not seem realistic. Therefore, the distribution of non lethal weapons to both citizens and police officers would decrease the crime rate in the United States. Advances in less lethal technology offer the promise of more effective control over resistive suspects with fewer serious injuries (Susan). Although policymakers and law enforcement officials debate the safety and effectiveness of non lethal weapons, such weapons are certainly a plausible solution to the gun regulation argument. While technological advances continue to provide U.S. forces with decided advantages over potential adversaries, the emergence of non lethal weapons technologies also promises to provide additional advantages to police officers and citizens. The main advantage of non lethal weapons is that one s actions usually do not result in the death of the attacker. Which corporation(s) would corner the market? If genetically engineered goods permeate the market, a trading would become obsolete. An intense plunge in the value of produce would agitate the stock market. The eradication of trading produce would cripple most, if not all, economies (Gandel, 2010). Though genetic engineeringof food has drawbacks, the benefits arguably may manage to outweigh them. The total dissolution of world hunger is an impressive feat. But, do the perceived benefits of genetic engineering make the hassle of starting a business worthwhile? Have the potential threats to democracy along with the socioeconomic implications associated with the utilization of new and emerging humanengineering technologies thoroughly been considered? ... In The Ascent of Mount Ventoux , Petrarch mentioned that the main reason behind his ascent was only to see the view from the highest peak. This exhibited the leaning away from Christian reasoning by showing that Petrarch did not do everything to deepen his Christian faith, but for his own self exploration. In Primavera , Botticelli displayed figures from Roman mythology, such as Venus and the Three Graces. This showed that incorporating not only Christian figures into art, but ones from the Greco Roman culture actually helped people advance in society, like Botticelli did. In The Prince , Machiavelli said that the proper prince s actions should not be restricted by moral considerations. Machiavelli proved that by doing what is necessary, a prince could be more successful than if he were to follow the Christian morals that were deemed so high during the Middle Ages. The idea that Europeans could wean themselves from following every Christian moral consideration helped the advancement of society because now people were able to branch out into doing things that previously would have seemed ... One of which was the Three Fourths Compromise, which stated that three fourths of slaves counted towards the total state s population so the associated state could have more seats in the House of Representatives. In theory, this was supposed to balance out the population discrepancies between the North and South so both had equal power in the House. The setting is like the foundation of the story, and without one the story seems merely lost. Quite often the setting will build up the story and affect the characters, and the characters behaviors. Against the backdrop of a Holocaust concentration camp, Ozick produces two static characters whose lack of development throughout the story emphasizes the theme of overwhelming hopelessness. However, later Rosa steals the shawl back from Stella for herself. She could fly, she was only air into the arena. The sunheat murmured of another life, of butterflies in the summer . As you can see this shawl was powerful to them, and with it they seemed in their own imaginary world. These thoughts and feelings are not ones from a healthy human being. It was this time of tribulation and hard times that made these girls so attached to such a simple item. These characters had nothing, they were in a concentration camp, and the shawl was the only thing they could rely on, so they made this shawl their dream. If this story would have had a different, or more peaceful setting, then these characters may have been able to establish more character traits. However due to the concentration camp background, these characters had absolutely nothing, but a shawl. Therefore, the setting was a crucial part of this story. The setting also affected the characters behaviors and thoughts. There is not a time in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
