PERSONAL STUDY
AIM:
The written part of the study should summarise what you have gained from
studying the Artists and Photographers relating to your theme. You should
aim to show your understanding of their intentions and the context of their
ideas. Record too your thoughts, feelings, and ideas that have resulted from
your study.
The following is a guide to help give some structure to that process.
INTRODUCTION:
• What is your study about?
• Why does the theme interest you?
• How does your theme relate to a wider set of ideas; ie. Can you put
your theme into some sort of wider context. (does it belong to a wider
movement in Art, or a more extensive theme in culture with deeper
roots?)
MAIN PART OF STUDY:
Begin by analysing the first or most important Photographer/ idea that you
wish to discuss. Set out the main features of their work and what excites you
about it.
• Analyse specific photographs or Artworks.
• Include illustrations/reproductions where appropriate.
• Show how each Artwork has engaged and interested you. Use the
‘investigating Artworks/photographs‘ sheet to help if necessary.
• Include quotes from both Artists and Writers on Art to back up points
that you make.
• Show how you have responded to the Artwork or photographs.
CONCLUSION:
Draw together the main points of your theme. Have you reached an overall
conclusion as a result of your investigations? How has the study enabled you
to make progress in your work?
Write between 1000 and 3000 words. Avoid the temptation to make an
evaluation that simply lists what you did practically week by week – the key
aim is to gain an understanding of the ideas and intentions of Artists and
Photographers.
