among other violent things are by far the most devastating. A few good ways to prevent gun
violence, and violence in general, are timed locks throughout the school, metal detectors on the
doors, gun safety programs at home and school, and more devices and policies to monitor students
whereabouts. I; however, believe that the best way to prevent school violence, without violating the
student's privacy, is to install timed locks and metal detectors throughout the entire school. Without
a doubt gun violence affects everyone including students, staff, and parents. In the past, Columbine
High School was a victim of school gun violence. "Two boys walked into the school with duffel
bags and wore black trench coats. One of the announcements reported a teacher suggesting that they

tragic happenings have left the nation in shock and horror, opening our eyes to the reality of the
growing problem of gun violence. There are more than 310 million guns in circulation in America,

As the principle of an inner–city high school, I have encountered some concern regarding the recent

Suspensions can lead to delinquency because some of the students may end up dropping out of
school. The risk of subsequent violence increases when violent students are transferred repeatedly
from one school to another (Finley, 2011). Students that drop out of school because of expulsion or
suspension are more likely to associate with deviant peers because they have more unstructured time
and this can become another problem.
Schools should take proactive approaches when dealing with school violence, but mediating in

Scenario one: School violence has turned out to be widespread, its impact has greatly affected
students, municipal officials, and law enforcement agencies across the region. This particular

When it comes to violence in schools, it's nothing new. Every day, the news media covers a story
over violence happening in school. My views over violence in school is there needs to be better
protection. The safety in schools is important because the kids in school is our future. They are our
future engineers, doctors, lawyers, etc., and if they don't have the protection they need, the kids in
school can't learn. A couple suggestions to make the schools safer are practice the A.L.I.C.E. more

Inform, Counter, and Evacuate (Eells). It's effective to practice it because the kids and teachers have
a chance to practice how to protect themselves during a real life events. School intruder situations
can last anywhere between five to seven minutes (Eells). When the school is alerted that they are on
lockdown, teachers are advised to use plain and simple language. They are advised to use plain and

escape through the windows or through the doors, the school urges them to barricade and lockdown

After researching more in depth about school shootings for my last write up, I decided that reading
and learning about the reality of school gun violence was important. In the late 1990s there was a
downward spiral of youth violence. Suburban areas stayed out of the spotlight, which helped keep
the fear of school violence to a minimum and brush under the rug the violence. In non–suburban
areas the majority were experiencing gun violence which led to fear in many peoples eyes. The

Students are taught how to read and write but not how to properly handle weapons or situations
involving them. "In most school shootings, the teenage shooters were first introduced to guns in
their own homes. In some cases, teens involved in violent incidents steal the weapons they use from
their parents. In other cases they are actually given the weapons" (Croft 35). If teens were properly

A research study by Espelage et al. (2013) defines school violence, provides a greater understanding
about school violence and its impact on students and teachers, and discusses prevention strategies
which can be implemented in U.S. school to reduce the risk and prevalence of school violence
against students and teachers. Specifically, through a literature review, Espelage et al. (2013) defines
school violence as being any action that results in the creation of a victim within the school or
academic environment. These actions commonly include bullying, intimidation, gang activity,
locker theft, weapon use, and physical and/or verbal assault (Espelage et al., 2013). A literature
review also provides a greater understanding about school violence and why it occurs. Simply,
Espelage et al., (2013) reveals that school violence against students and teachers is a direct result of
negative behaviors and behavioral responses that have been denied the appropriate form of
treatment and intervention. Research also reveals that school violence occurs in schools today
because of a lack of understanding about behavioral issues and mental illness, a lack of awareness
about behavioral issues and mental illness, lack of effective prevention strategies, and poor
relationships and communication between students, teachers, and parents (Espelage et al., 2013).

In recent times, several mass shootings have occurred in several places. Sadly, public schools in
America have been venues for these mass shootings. How do we reduce these shootings? How do
we ensure that the lives of our kids are safe? These are the questions parents all over America are
asking. A lot of suggestions have been made to the government concerning the issue of mass
shootings. Some say government have to ban the purchase of guns, others say there should be

Violence in society is increasing dramatically and not only is it out in the streets, but it's in the
school systems as well. However, school violence has been becoming more and more of a problem
all over the nation in the past several years. School violence needs to stop because no one should be
afraid to go to school without feeling like it'll be their last day. Not only is school violence affecting
children, but it affects teachers as well. Deaths in schools are tragic events that affect not just those
involved, but it also affects everyone else in the school, the neighborhoods, and the families as well.

Persuasive School Violence
Imagine this, a parent just sent his/her kid to school. The parent is worried if they will meet someone
new in their class. The parent is casually watching the news and hears that there was a shooting at
her child's school. The adult begins to worry and rushes to the school. The parent was notified that
her child was safe and secure; but soon to find out, the child's friend that she had just made, was
shot by the gunman. Throughout the years, school violence has become a controversial topic in the
press. Parents do not want to keep worrying when they send his/her child to school. The parent
should be at ease when they send their son or daughter to a safe environment. School violence needs
to be stopped in its place as soon as possible! The first reason school violence should be stopped, is
for the school to become a safer environment for the child. Some schools are already giving
background checks to incoming visitors that enter the school building. All schools need to get this
program as soon as they can. This program sees if the visitor is a registered sex offender, a felony,

building. This safety precaution would make the United States schools an extremely better

My Report School is supposed to be a safe place, where kids can go to learn in hopes of finding
their passion and continuing with their education until they find fulfilling careers. However, with
violence in schools growing in America, school is beginning to seem less and less safe. According to
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's article, "Violence Prevention," the main types of
school violence include: bullying, cyber bullying, fighting, weapon use, and gang violence
("Violence Prevention" 3). This article continues to explain that school violence can occur at school,
on the way to or from school, and at any school–sponsored event ("Violence Prevention" 4).
Ultimately, it does not take a handful of resources to begin to explain school violence. The most
well–known acts of school violence on a day–to–day basis are bullying and cyber bullying.
According to StopBullying.gov's article, "Facts About Bullying," about twenty–eight percent of
people in grades six through twelve have been bullied, and about nine percent have been
cyberbullied ("Facts About Bullying" 27). Bullying is usually seen as any harmful act, either
physically or emotionally, that occurs on school grounds or at school events. Some examples of
bullying would be beating another kid up, saying rude things to someone, or making fun of
someone. Bullying can cause kids to commit suicide or dread going to school. With the rise of
technology and social media, kids can no longer escape bullying at home.

urban settings? Because they believed there is an important "research gap" in data about why urban
teachers leave their positions in inner city schools, Deborah Smith and Brian Smith researched that

This research investigates definitions of school violence in general and as a subset of youth violence
in particular and investigates and the core environmental factors and the individual student risk
factors found to contribute to school violence. The research also includes investigation into the
effects of school violence on today's youth in general and the negative outcomes of school violence
including poor physical health, poor mental health, poor academic achievement, and a decreased
sense of safety/well–being in particular. The research concludes with an exploration of some of the
prevention and intervention strategies proven to be effective in reducing violence in other countries–
from a school–based bullying/victimization intervention program implemented in Norwegian
schools, to a South African social development curriculum to cognitive–behavioral training
programs to community– and school–based media campaigns developed for teaching social skills
around anger management, impulse control, and empathy–that need to be implemented in American
schools to keep our children safe.

What are the most current statistics?
Violence in any form is damaging to any persons involved. Therefore, it is no surprise that the
occurrences of school violence have continued to grow, every year. In the last five years, there have
been over 234 school violence incidents involving the use of a firearm (Everytown For Gun Safety,
2017). Furthermore, these incidents indicate that there are many troubled youths in society today.
According to one source, the most recent school violent incident was in July of this year at the
University of Arkansas where the offender attacked students, injuring and killing several. This same
source reports school shootings just about every month and sometimes several in one month

form of school violence is physical altercations. According to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, "nearly 8% of students had been in a physical fight on school property one or more
times and 6% of students has not gone to school because they felt they would be unsafe at school or

look the other way unless an individual is physically attached. Today, many things trigger physical
abuse. If a student doesn't fit into what society views as "normal" they are pushed, hit, kicked, and

To start with, seeing in most schools today, there are many students that have difficulties with their
aptitude to learn and to study because it is affected by the violence occurring at school. Students lose
their interest in studying due to the physical and emotional abusing that both teachers and students
use at school, making it more complicated for them to attend classes or even trying to understand the
courses that they are involved with in their studies. Looking at most schools here in Tonga, some of
the students that has less capabilities in studying and doing school works; some of the teachers pick
on them, thus that is emotional abusing. It makes those students feel more insecure about themselves
drawing to the point making it harder for them trying to learn. Seeing that the reason for them to
come to school is to learn but turns out that the teachers are the first ones that point out their
disabilities therefore allowing most of the other students to do the same. Not only that we take this
emotional abusing as violence, but also the physical abusing at schools, for some teachers that abuse
their students does not only affect the students being abused but can also affect other students in the
