Why Did The Cesna Revolutionized The Aviation Industry
According to well–documented facts, Clyde V. Cessna developed the most produced aircraft in the world. He has developed over 100 revolutionary
airplanes. His ideas and–and his great mind have greatly impacted the air travel industry. He should be inducted into The Historical Hall of Fame
because he revolutionized the airplane making industry, he has invented over 100 airplanes, and he designed and built the most produced aircraft
company in the world. Clyde Cessna has revolutionized the aircraft making industry for over 100 years. In the book "Wichita" by James E. Mason on
page 99, it says,"...built a monoplane with a cantilevered high–wing design that has revolutionized the industry for years." In this quote, it talks about

Boeing Engineering Strike Case Analysis
Negotiation Efforts: The Boeing Engineering Strike In 2000, the Boeing Company found itself in an unprecedented crisis. Over 17,000 engineers
walked off the job site in a massive strike initiative. Attempts to end and mitigate the strike provide a backdrop for negotiation process analysis in a
collective bargaining situation. Prior to the engineering strike, Boeing grossly underestimated the morale and emotions of the company's engineers. The
failure to connect with employee concerns cost the company in both reputation and financial loss. The purpose of this paper is to explore the
negotiation process as it unfolded during the Boeing engineering strike.
Boeing
The Boeing Company represents the world's largest aerospace corporation and is the foremost producer of commercial jets as well as defense, space,
and security systems. Corporate offices are located in Chicago, IL supporting Boeing's two business units: Commercial and Defense, Space, and
Security. The company boasts one of the worlds most talented, diverse, and creative pool of employees with approximately 160,000 individuals
working throughout the United States and in more than 65 countries (The Boeing Company, 2016).

There were two main reasons. First, the organization had historically experienced one engineering strike, in 1993, lasting only one day (Imberman,
2001). Hence, Boeing was not anticipating a strike, especially one of any magnitude. Secondly, the organization neglected to listen to employee needs
and concerns, executing one–way communication from the top down (Imberman, 2001). Subsequently, Boeing was not aware of how strongly the
engineers felt about the McDonnell Douglas merger, white–collar worker benefits, and the internal work culture changes brought about by importing

ABSTRACT
Airbus is a French company manufacturing civil aircrafts. The company produces and markets Airbus A320 and the world's largest passenger airliner,
A380 apart from several other models. My individual report discusses about the Radio Frequency Identification(RFID) implementation at Airbus and
how much this improved the supply chain efficiency. The main intension was to continuously improve its supply chain by mastering the supplier's
approval and the surveillances of their manufacturing capabilities. To achieve this goal, Airbus developed a strategy based upon assessment of
suppliers Quality Management Systems and their special processes by external bodies along with the use of international standards. The strategy needs
to be deployed throughout the entire supply chain.
Airbus focused on IT to manage its supply chain and improve the overall efficiency. RFID implementation played a key role in improving efficiency
and visibility in its supply chain. RFID was implemented in the tool loan business where it used to lend tools to its customers that were required for the
maintenance of the aircraft. The whole intention to implement RFID in the tool loan department was to improve efficiency by making tools available
quickly to its customers and for proper traceability.

The Aerospace And Defense Industry
Companies in the aerospace industry require high capital investment and new innovated technology. Some key ratios in the aerospace and defense
industry include the current ratio, the debt to equity ratio, working capital ratio, and capital expenditures to sales. These financial ratios measure how
firms leverage debt, how capable a company is of paying its obligations, and how much a company invests to facilitate growth. The table below shows
2014 financial data for 1,400 large, medium, and small company sizes within the aerospace industry (Hoovers, 2015).
Additionally, the cash flows in the aerospace and defense industry are generally not a concern because contracts are paid based on a percentage of
completion and cost–plus (Hoovers, 2015). A cost–plus contract is when a contractor pays all of its required expenses plus more to make profit.
Manufacturers do not get paid until they have completed and delivered the products (Hoovers, 2015). Another key metric in the industry is the
working capital turnover ratio. The working capital turnover ratio is nearly thirty percent. This shows the aerospace industry is capable of using its
working capital to generate sales. The industry relies heavily on commercial air traffic and military defense spending (Hoovers, 2015). The average
days for accounts receivable sales is 53 days, which is typical (Hoovers, 2015). Inventory turnover is also important for this industry because it is
critical to see how many aerospace products

William E. Boeing's Influence On The Plane Making Industry
William E Boeing made a company that has changed the industry of plane making, but how much influence did William E. Boeing have ton the plane
making industry? Boeing's impact is large as the company has influence the industry by several ways such as starting from a small company and
expanding to the world's largest company, making the first wide–bodied plane, and going the distance in reinventing the company to rise above their
competitors.
In August 1915 William E.Boeing applied to the Glenn L. Martin School in Los Angeles. After he completed his courses he ordered a plane known
as Model TA from the Martin Factory to learn more about how planes are made. The Model TA inspired Boeing to construct aircrafts. He hired
twelve men and they began building the first Boeing plane. William E. Boeing combined a factory and a seaplane hangar by Lake Union and made
the first test flight of the first Boeing plane. His first airplane was a seaplane, and he sold several of them to the US Navy to use as pilot training jet
during World War 1. Between World War I and World War II, the Boeing Company developed both civilian and military aircrafts and their heavy
bombers played ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The plane that Boeing revealed is known as the Boeing 747. The Boeing 747 was a game changer because it was the world's first wide bodied
plane. According to the book "Flying over the USA: airplanes in American Life, The plane would be able to carry hundreds of passengers and the
airliner would now charge less for flying and would not need as many aircrafts (Martin 13)." Another reason why this plane is significant is because it
was The Boeing Company's first plane to be entirely designed on a computer. Designing planes on computer was one of the several changes that The
Boeing Company made to its company after the unveiling of the Boeing

Boeing 767 Operation Management Essay
The Boeing 767: From Concept to Production
BSA 523: Operation Management
Professor Henry P. Barnhill
March 6, 2012
The Boeing Commercial Airplane Company was founded in 1916 and was located in Seattle, Washington. Now headquartered in Chicago, Illinois,
Boeing is the world's largest and perhaps most well–known aerospace firm. According to their website (www.boeing.com), the company operates in
three principal segments –commercial airplanes; military aircraft and missiles; and space and communications. The commercial airplane division
consists of the 717, 737, 747, 757, 767 and 777 families of jetliners and the Boeing business jet. Boeing faces stiff competition from international
aerospace companies seeking to increase market share, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With regard to the 767, Boeing was able to use parametric cost techniques to formulate an accurate estimate of total assembly hours required, thereby
facilitating net present value (NPV) analysis of the project. Besides the above–mentioned tools and methods, Boeing also employed a variety of human
resources to plan, schedule and adjust project performance. There were Audit Teams that were composed of seasoned Boeing managers, audit teams
investigated every facet of the product development process including finance, manufacturing, technology and management. These teams promoted
project development by catching errors early and directly reporting them to upper management for resolution. The Management Visibility System
schedules were prominently posted for review, and weekly status meetings were held in which department supervisors notified each other of their
needs and potential problems. Supervisors were required to stand up at meetings and explain why they were unable to meet production goals. Managers
were then entrusted with clearing all hurdles to achieving those goals. The Production Change Board (PCB) reviewed all engineering–related change
requests and assessed their cost and schedule impact. A feasible implementation approach was then developed for each approved request .By resorting
to a wide variety of technical and human resource planning and coordination tools and strategies, Boeing was able to tackle the 767 development project

Boeing Versus Airbus: Trade Disputes
Introduction
For years the commercial aircraft industry has been an American success story. Until 1980, U.S. manufacturers held a virtual monopoly. Despite the
rise of the European–based Airbus Industrie, this persisted through the mid–1990s, when two U.S. firms, Boeing and McDonnell Douglas, accounted
for over two–thirds of world market share. In late 1996, many analysts thought that U.S. dominance in this industry would be further strengthened when
Boeing announced a decision to acquire Mc–Donnell Douglas for $13.3 billion, creating an aerospace behemoth nearly twice the size of its nearest
competitor.
The industry is routinely the largest net contributor to the U.S. balance of trade, and Boeing is the largest U.S. exporter. In ... Show more content on

Perhaps fore–most among these is that the costs of developing a new airliner are enormous. Boeing spent a reported $5 billion developing and tooling
up to produce the 777 wide–bodied jetliner that it introduced in 1994. The development costs for Airbus's new aircraft, the 555–seat A380
"super–jumbo," are estimated to be anywhere between $10 billion and $15 billion. (The A380 is Airbus's direct competitor to Boeing's profitable 747
model line.)
Given such enormous development costs, a company must capture a significant share of world demand to break even. In the case of the 777, for
example, Boeing needed to sell more than 200 aircraft to break even, a figure that represented about 15 percent of predicted industry sales for this class
of aircraft between 1994 and 2004. Given the volume of sales required to break even, it can take up to 10 to 14 years of production for an air–craft
model to turn a profit, and this is on top of the 5 to 6 years of negative cash flows during development.
On the manufacturing side, a significant experience curve exists in aircraft production. Due to learning effects, on average, unit cost falls by about 20
percent with each doubling of accumulated output. A company that fails to move along the experience curve faces a significant unit–cost disadvantage.
A company that achieves only half of the market share required to break even will suffer a 20 percent

Full Body Scanners in Airports
Full Body Scanners in Airports A full body scanner that is a device that is able to detect objects hidden under clothing by constructing a full 3–D image
of a person, complete with detailed body contours. There are presently two types of scanning technology that are used in full body scanners:
millimeter wave scanners and backscatter scanners. A millimeter wave scanner is able to use radio waves that are of tremendously high frequencies,
which are decoded in order to produce a 3–D image. A backscatter scanner makes use of high–energy rays that scatter when they hit solid materials.
This allows a backscatter scanner to generate a detailed image of the person being scanned. Both scanners are effective at detecting contraband that

They say the low level beam does deliver a slight dose of radiation to the body but because the beam concentrates on the skin, one of the most
radiation–sensitive organs of the human body, that dose may be up to twenty times higher than first estimated. University of California biochemist
David Agard is quoted saying "While the dose would be safe if it were distributed through the volume of the entire body, the dose to the skin may be
dangerously high." He adds, "Ionizing radiation such as the X–rays used in these scanners have the potential to induce chromosome damage, and that
can lead to cancer." People with medical implants such as pacemakers should avoid electromagnetic generating pulse body scanners as they can
significantly alter the waveform of the pacemaker pulse. Travelers are not informed that they are in the line to get a full body scan until they
actually see it in the process. Once a traveler questions it, the TSA becomes suspicious and the traveler could be interrogated. There are issues with
the lack of signs in the airports informing travelers about these full body scanners and the lack of signs informing travelers that you can opt out of
them for another form of screening method. A pro of a full body scanner is it detects items such as non–metallic weapons and explosives not picked up
by metal detectors but the body scanner only scans surfaces. So, will cavity searches be routine

A Case Of Airbus : The Key Drivers For Globalisation
A case of Airbus
Introduction
Globalisation describes a process when capital, domestic product and labour markets become more integrated across national boundaries. The key
drivers for globalisation are: the advances in transport and communication, the increasing level of international trade and labour has become more
internationally mobile (Anonymous, 2007). As a result of globalisation, more and more businesses are setting up or buying operations in different
nations. When a foreign company invests in a country, by buying commercial properties, such as a building, factory or a shop it is called inward
investment. Organisations that operate in several countries are known as transnational corporations (TNCs) (BBC, 2014).
Airbus is an example of TNCs that has operated successfully since the 1970s. Since it first entered service in 1974, Airbus has traded more than
13,200 aircraft to over 500 clients and operators (Airbus, 2013). In 2014 it generated € 60,713 million in revenue in comparison with the revenue
made in 2013 (€ 57,567 million) the revenue has increase by € 3,146 million. This is the result of delivering more aircraft than previous year
(Airbusgroup, 2015a).
The purpose of this paper is to carry out a strategic analysis of the aircraft manufacturer Airbus using the PEST model. PEST is an abbreviation for the

Reduction of Part Counts and Composite Materials for...
Composite materials comprise significantly greater percentages of airframe structural materials used throughout the aerospace manufacturing process.
This increased usage has led many individuals within the Air Force (AF) community and Department of Defense (DoD) leaders to restudy the life
cycle cost (LCC) models used to estimate the costs for most weapon systems. A series of composite affordability initiatives (CAI) have culminated in
significant evidence over the last three decades which aids in better quantifying the impact of primarily advanced composite materials in the airframe
structures of aircraft. Current accelerated use of advanced composite materials in aircraft, sporting goods, and medical products is a result of the
versatility of composites. This paper finds that a significant relationship exists between the reduction of the part counts and the large scale advanced
composite materials used in life cycle cost (LCC) models for aircraft structures. The reduction percentages in the part counts led to reductions in the
percentages of touch labor hours in design, design support, testing, tooling, manufacturing, and quality assurance. This percentage of reduction affects
most development and production cost categories.
Introduction: The available life cycle cost (LCC) models and procurement strategies do not take into consideration the varied manufacturing techniques
for advanced composite materials. The increased use of advanced composite materials in aerospace

The development of the aircraft required enormous investments to around €12 billion. Up to now, in its second life year, 200 orders have already
been made and 13 A380's have been delivered. Off course, this is insufficient to regain the huge development costs and everything depends on the
success of the first A380 planes. Nonetheless, as the world passenger traffic and congestion of airports increases each year, it is almost certain that
new orders on the A380 will soon be placed, especially by emerging countries such as China and India.
2.1.4 Investment in R&D
According to the Invest in France Agency, French aerospace companies invest more than 16% of their turnover in R&D activities in order to prepare
for the future and to preserve their place in a highly competitive environment. This is more than their competitors in other countries. In order to keep
developing competitive products, the French industry players have joined forces in 2 ambitious research programs: Clean sky (EU level) and an
agreement with the ministry of ecology and sustainable development to establish a Civil Aeronautics Research Council. Various new technologies and
breakthrough inventions have been developed for the A380, making it the world's most advanced and efficient airplane.
2.2 Weaknesses
2.2.1 Governmental support
The financial budget of the French government available for aerospace companies is quite small, in comparison with the government support in the
United States.

Boeing : The Airplane Company Essay
The Boeing Airplane Company, one of the original names in commercial aviation was established in 1917 by William Boeing. Taking advantage of the
wright brothers first manned flight and the subsequent popularity of flying William Boeing saw an opportunity to design practical uses for aviation.
From World War I, through World War II, and every other armed conflict the U.S. Military has been involved withBoeing has played an integral role in
developing and fielding state of the art aircraft and satellite technologies to enable our armed forces to succeed. For the civilian sector they have
built passenger carrying planes from the 707 which after its debut in 1957 travel by air exceeded travel by rail and sea for the first time, to their
newest flagship 787 Dreamliner which provides more cabin space and 20% less fuel consumption than comparably sized planes (A Century in the Sky,

Boeing vs Airbus: Who is in the Lead?
Boeing occupied 57% of the world's existing fleet in 1992 where one–third of total revenues came from military aircraft and remaining two–third came
from commercial aircraft. By the end of 1992, Boeing had delivered total 7183 commercial aircraft into the global aviation market. These included
59% of short–to–medium range aircrafts (727 & 737), 27.7% of medium–to–long range aircrafts (707,757 & 767) and 13.3% of long range aircrafts

For the other case, Airbus occupied 16% of the world's existing fleet in 1992 and only 972 commercial aircraft had been delivered by the end of 1992.
These included 37.2% of short–to–medium range aircrafts (A320 & A321) and 62.3% of medium–to–long range aircrafts (A300 & A310) without any
long range aircrafts.
As a result, Boeing had occupied 3.5 times larger aviation market and delivered approximately 7 times more aircraft than Airbus by the end of 1992
(shows in Figure 1).
In terms of production scale:
Since Boeing established in 1916, it had developed into the world's largest commercial aircraft manufacturer in 1992. It has two major factors:
Everett (world's largest building by volume) and Renton in Washington with total area of 10.6 million square feet and approximately 28,000
employees over three shifts. Parts and subassemblies were shipped by truck, rail, air and ship from nine national sites and five international facilities.
These scales of facilities and workforce enable Boeing to produce a completed aircraft in only 6

This malware is then capable of enumerating disk drives, contacting the command and control server, collecting system information, and downloading

and ensure training and security mechanisms are in place for email (Kovacs, 2013).
Unfortunately, this is not the only attack against the industry. There have also been reports of spying and even wire fraud. In January 2016 reports
indicated that FACC, an Austrian company that is a known aerospace manufacturer who supplies engine and interior parts forAirbus and Boeing,
posted on its company blog that it was hit by a massive cyber attack that allows hackers to take $55M from the company's accounts. Although in this
instance the attack appears to be financially driven it doesn't mean that attacks in the future will be. Having information about engines being supplied to
companies such as Airbus and Boeing could be detrimental for their use and national security (Billington, 2016)..

Individual Homework #1 – Boeing 787: The Dreamliner
Boeing 787: The Dreamliner Case Study (download from Angel) During the past decade, Boeing watched as their competitor, Airbus, launched
several new and very successful aircraft. In 2004, Airbus surpassed Boeing in commercial airplanes delivered and future orders placed. This is the
first time that Boeing has ever lost its leading market share. The 787 is the first new airplane that Boeing has introduced to the market in a decade.

With all the steps that Boeing took, it was guaranteed that Boeing would be successful in the market.
2. How does the approach used for the 787's development differ fundamentally from other airplane projects undertaken by Boeing?
The approach that Boeing 787 took was fundamentally different than other airplane projects undertaken by Boeing. Boeing built 70% of the products
of Boeing 787 from different countries of the world. Boeing has a long–standing reputation to be secretive with their projects, so it was a big step for
Boeing to break their privacy and work with a group of people across geographical boundaries. 35% of the plane's structure was supplied from
Japan. Approximately, 26% of the products were supplied from Italy. There were teams of 15 companies responsible for the structure of the plane,
10 teams from USA and the rest from seven other countries. A lot of the other products were also ordered from different parts of the world,
including the vertical fin from Frederickson as well as the fixed and movable leading edges of the wing from Tulsa. Once all the parts were built, they
were sent back to USA for the assembly. Also, 787 would be the first aircraft of its kind to bring long–range capabilities to a midsized airplane. It was
also the first time Boeing had its structural suppliers fund their own research and development so that suppliers had a greater

A Study On Hawaiian Airlines
Since their inception in 1929, Hawaiian Airlines (HA) has continually grown to become major player throughout the Pacific. In 2013 HA finished
that year with their "sixth consecutive year of profitability and a record passenger count of 9.95 million." (Hawaiian Airlines, 2014) By the end of
2014 HA will have a fleet of "three ATR
–42s, 18 B717s, 10 B767s, and 19 A330s." (Hawaiian Airlines, 2014) This young fleet will continue carrying
passengers on roughly 212 daily jet flights to "20 domestic and international destinations in the Pacific region" for the foreseeable future. (About
Hawaiian, 2014) So much positive business news however is often balanced out with the negative. Luckily for HA their positives largely outweigh
the negative business aspects. Because HA has operated so effectively and efficiently for the past six years, it's hard to justify changes to their
current business plan. 2014 is shaping up to be yet another big year for HA keeping in line with the positive business trends of the past. If past
profitability has any influence on the future then HA seems to be in a great position to remain profitable for the foreseeable future. When looking at
the measures of airline profitability the Revenue Passenger Mile (RPM) and Available seat miles (ASM) are usually the go to measureable items.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner After all that has been said about the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the airplane is set to revolutionize the airline industry. The
787 Dreamliner is more technologically advanced than its predecessors and will boast better performance, better fuel efficiency, and higher passenger
comfort. To be honest, with all the new innovations the 787 Dreamliner is said to have, the airplane is quite a wonder. The question now: Can Boeing
deliver? If Boeing succeeds, they will catapult past their competition, the European manufacturer Airbus. They are confident that the 787 Dreamliner
will help them do just that, and have predicted very high sales numbers. According to Oxford Analytica, Boeing has predicted the sale of... Show more

The passenger experience is also supposed to be much improved. The cabin will have improved humidity, and will be pressurized to 6,000 feet instead
of the 8,000 feet that other airliners provide. Due to the new flight technology, there should also be better noise–reduction from the engines, and a
smoother ride (Newairplane). All in all, with all the new improvements, Dreamliner seems to be a very fitting name for this new aircraft. Boeing has
many potential suitors for its 787 Dreamliner. Its largest customer is the International Lease Finance Corporation, which has ordered 74 aircraft (Wiki).
The International Lease Finance Corporation, or I.L.F.C., leases planes to many of the world's airlines, such as Air Canada, Lufthansa, American
Airlines, Continental Airlines, and Delta Airlines (Wiki). According to newairplane.com, a few of the many customers for theBoeing 787 are British
Airways, Northwest Airlines, Korean Air,United Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic (Newairplane). The airplane is not expected to be used for passenger
service until the fourth quarter of 2010, so sadly we won't get to see it in action until the end of the year (Wiki). The Boeing 787 Dreamliner will be
replacing the 767 and the 757 jets (Global). The 787 Dreamliner will be able to carry 250–330 passengers farther distances than these jets, and do it
much more efficiently. Its main competition will be from Airbus, specifically the new

Ans:
International Operations management and corporate strategy:
Operations management of an International business needs to be integrated with the firm's corporate strategy. The central role of operations management
is to create the potential for achieving superior value for the firm. If operations management takes Rs. 100 worth of inputs and brings out product worth
Rs. 150, it has crated considerable value for the firm. However, if it requires Rs. 140 worth of inputs to obtain the same output, value creation does take

The arguments that support vertical integration and the risks associated with outsourcing. The risks of outsourcing are incidentally the supportive
arguments for any decisions to make.
Reasons for Outsourcing:
1. Strategic flexibility–switching orders between suppliers as circumstances dictate
2. Cost reduction
3. Focus on core competencies
4. Minimize inventory, materials handling, and other non–value–added costs.
5. Reduce development and production cycle times
6. Improve efficiency
7. Possibility of obtaining orders from the country where suppliers are located.
Risks of Outsourcing
1. Loss of control
2. Conversion costs
3. Possibility of being tied to obsolete technology
4. Exposure to supplier risks; financial strength, loss of commitment to outsourcing, slow implementation, promised features not available, lack of
responsiveness poor quality
5. Loss of protection over proprietary technology
6. Denial of the possibility of specialized investments
Trade–offs is always involved in make or buys decisions. The benefits of manufacturing components in house seem to be very strong when highly
specialized assets are involved, when firm is simply more efficient than external suppliers at performing a particular activity.
When these conditions are not present, the risks of strategic inflexibility and organizational problems suggest that it may be better contract out
manufacturing components to independent suppliers. Since issues of strategic flexibility

Australia's Prevalent Air Carriers
Australia's prevalent air carriers are: Qantas Airlines, Ansett, Pacific Blue Airways, Airnorth, and Qantas' lead competitor Virgin Blue. Qantas is
distinctive in that the Group is Australia's oldest, most recognized, and most on–time carrier.
All carriers are facing serious economic challenges from the rising cost of labor and fuel, government regulation, and competition between them. In
anticipation for such trials, Qantas CEO Alan Joyce launched a five–year plan in 2011 to restructure Qantas' domestic and international network in
addition to expanding its already existing frequent flyer program for Qantas and its wholly owned subsidiary, JetStar. In Qantas' 2013 mid–year report
it realized an underlying profit before tax of $95 million. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For the mid–year report of 2014, Qantas reported losses reaching $252 million. Joyce claims this loss is due to "structural economic shifts exacerbated
by an uneven playing field in Australian aviation policy" (Qantas Media Releases, 2014) in addition to the continued cost of the transformation. The
"shift" that Joyce refers to is in regard to foreign investment in domestic airlines. For example, a significant percentage of Virgin Blue's ownership is
concentrated in three foreign airlines that have the support of their respective governments. Joyce's argument is that the current Australian aviation
policy allows majority foreign–owned carriers to operate domestically, which greatly distorts the Australian domestic market. In addition to Virgin Blue,
these foreign–owned companies include Singapore Airlines, Ethiad, and a plethora of other minor carriers. All of these competitors receive substantial
subsidies that put Australian–owned and/or controlled companies at a competitive and economic disadvantage.
Qantas has to rethink their marketing strategy to the customer while continuing to prioritize spending and downsizing costs. Joyce's precarious and
lofty goal is to have a $2 billion cost reduction as well as reducing the Group's debt by $1 billion by the end of FY17. A major contributor to this plan is
that Qantas aims to "re–assign aircraft to better match demand, defer aircraft orders, dispose of aircraft, increase fleet

Introduction and Overview of the Australian Domestic Market
The purpose of this report is to analyse the Qantas Group Annual Report for 2013 with a focus on the role of Qantas in the Australian domestic market.
While analysing the Qantas Group Annual Report for 2013, it will become clear as to why the Qantas Group results have been impacted by the
competition from Virgin and Tiger.
Financial Performance within the Qantas Group
For the financial year that ended on the 30th of June 2013, the Qantas Group reported an underlying profit before tax of $192 million, which
translates to a statutory profit before tax of $17 million and a post tax statutory profit of $6 million respectively. The development of the Qantas
Group's strategies set for 2012 and 2013 progressed in seemingly tactical ways, despite a challenging backdrop in both the domestic markets and
international markets with stellar high fuel prices across the globe and an excess of capacity in Australia concerning domestic low cost and full service
carriers. The international market also faced and continues to face over capacity

Business Analysis : Aerospace Industries Association ( Aia )
Today's aircraft marketplace is highly competitive where there exists a balanced and
healthy worldwide demand for brand new aircraft brought on by a foreseeable growth in
passengers, airline profitability at record levels, and a replacement cycle continuance in order to
improve performance and fuel efficiency of a huge section of the worldwide fleet. The US
Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) estimates that the country 's aerospace industry sales will
increase by 5.3% in 2015, but is not backing down on a call on the US government to boost
defense spending. The AIA 's annual forecast expects aerospace sales to grow to $240 billion in
2015, up from a preliminary $228 billion expected for 2014. Civil aircraft sales will continue to
contribute the greatest share, with the AIA forecasting that such sales will top $79.8 billion in
2015. Military aircraft sales will contribute $54.5 billion, space sales $52.3 billion, and related
aerospace products and services are expected to net about $33.6 billion and missiles $20.2
billion." (Ghim–Lay, Yeo).
The Boeing Aircraft Company has dominated the commercial aircraft market for decades.

Executive Summary
In an inevitably competitive worldwide business, organizations need to perceive the need to oversee scarce financial assets to build productivity while
offering more cost–successful, great and management to clients. Keeping up with the benefit and supportability requires convincing management of
assets, including funds. Financial management is a non– exclusive term used to cover the accompanying three capacities:
1. Management Accounting – Providing data to groups inside the association to help management in choice making.
2. Financial Accounting – External reporting of financial data for groups outside the association.
3. Cost Accounting – A vital piece of management accounting, it fulfils both inward and outer groups to the association and is for the most part
concerned with costs, costing and cost conduct.
Financial management in this manner assumes a pivotal part in choosing the accomplishment of a business and decides the returns and profits for all
stakeholders (Carpenter & Sanders, 2009).

Low Cost Airlines Essay
CANDIDATE NUMBER: 1801655
MN5333 INTERNATIONAL STRATEGY AND ENTERPRENEURSHIP ANSWER 1: Low fare price is one of the main thing passengers/ fliers
consider when looking to fly, therefore for most, low budget airlines are their first option. Passengers are willing to give up their comfort and other
in–flight services such as entertainment and during their journey for low ticket prices. However, over the past few decades, operating long haul flights
was not to the advantage of these budget airlines. The cost of fuel made it for the most part, took up a huge proportion of the costs needed to manage
/operate these flights.According to The Economist article, Oasis airline went into liquidation a year after they had started flying from London to
Vancouver at low–cut prices in 2008. Regardless of their flop, some other airline companies including Air Asia are giving the no frills model a try.
Scoot Airlines for instance offer cut–price tickets for six–hour flights between Singapore and Tianjin; this is not a definite medium or long–haul
flight.Time zones / time difference is one of the challenges these low budget airlines faced in flying long distances. Some airports have night curfews
which makes it hard / impossible for the planes to turnaround the same day. This leads to an increase in their operation cost, because they would have
to be responsible for lodging and feeding their crew. This is another reason why these low budget airlines adapt the free

Case Summary:
1.) In early 2003, Boeing announced plans to design and sell an airliner named the 7E7. Boeing aimed for the 7E7 to be more fuel efficient, carry
between 200 and 250 passengers, able to accomplish both domestic and international flights, as well as be 10% cheaper to operate than Airbus's
A330–200 aircraft. All of these attributes were attractive to Boeing but would come at significant costs. To accomplish these attributes, Boeing
proposed to construct the aircraft ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There were also some unknown variables that needed to be taken into account. Development and per–copy costs were the costs that the board wanted to
minimize. The forecast assumes that development costs would be $8 billion. There was great uncertainty surrounding the manufacturing cost of the
7E7. The element that adds the most uncertainty to the manufacturing costs are in the engineering of the aircraft. While the engineering costs could be
high, Boeing was hoping that the lower construction costs of using the composite materials would compensate for the elevated engineering costs.
2.) The cost of capital for Boeing would hinged on several factors. Factors such as beta and the debt/equity ratio for Boeing and other companies in
the same industry could impact how much Boeing's cost of capital could be. The marginal tax rate for Boeing was expected to be around 35%. Yields
on three–month Treasury bonds were .85% and the yield on 30–year Treasury bonds was 4.56%. On June 16, 2003, Boeing's stock closed at a price of
$36.41. An important factor in figuring Boeing's cost of capital would be that Boeing was separated into two different businesses. The defense
business was more stable due to the declaration of war against Iraq while the commercial business was more volatile due to the events of September
11, 2001. Due to the fact of Boeing being divided into two different

Executive Summary
Activities in the commercial aeroplane manufacturing industry have been outshined by the competition involving the European owned Airbus and the
USA owned Boeing. These two companies exist as a duopoly at the top end of the commercial aeroplane manufacturing industry that covers the
development of airplanes with a capability of more than 200 persons. Other aeroplane manufacturers also exist but at the lower end of the industry,
these smaller firms mainly develop low capacity airplanes that basically convey less than 150 persons.

As according to the company, this aircraft would help airliners save fuel costs. The aircraft is also intended to be tons lighter than other models.
Airbus, on the other hand, with its A350 XWB intends to offer the airline market with the largest aircraft it has produced till date. Post, Paris Air
Show and the Dubai Air Show held in 2007, A350 claims to give a stiff competition to 787. Boeing plans to deliver its Dreamliner by 2008, and
Airbus by 2013. Boeing with 5 years of advantage, and confirmed orders, industry observers inquire, if Airbus would beat the time advantage or bank
on the strength of the A350, or better still use the time to their advantage and modify the aircraft to being user friendly
QUESTION 1: What is a duopoly market? How is competition dynamics structured in a duopoly market? What are the pitfalls of a duopoly market?
A duopoly market can simply be referred to as one in which two firms own all or nearly all of the market for a given product or service or it is a
term which is basically used to describe an industry where market share is dominated by only two firms. This market structure which is a form of an
oligopoly applies where few competing companies with many buyers strategically interact with its rivals by reacting to key business decisions. This has
been the case for market segments for the manufacturing of commercial airplanes. Over the years this market has been dominated mainly

Why Did The Cesna Revolutionized The Aviation Industry

  • 1. Why Did The Cesna Revolutionized The Aviation Industry According to well–documented facts, Clyde V. Cessna developed the most produced aircraft in the world. He has developed over 100 revolutionary airplanes. His ideas and–and his great mind have greatly impacted the air travel industry. He should be inducted into The Historical Hall of Fame because he revolutionized the airplane making industry, he has invented over 100 airplanes, and he designed and built the most produced aircraft company in the world. Clyde Cessna has revolutionized the aircraft making industry for over 100 years. In the book "Wichita" by James E. Mason on page 99, it says,"...built a monoplane with a cantilevered high–wing design that has revolutionized the industry for years." In this quote, it talks about how Clyde's development ... • 2. Boeing Engineering Strike Case Analysis Negotiation Efforts: The Boeing Engineering Strike In 2000, the Boeing Company found itself in an unprecedented crisis. Over 17,000 engineers walked off the job site in a massive strike initiative. Attempts to end and mitigate the strike provide a backdrop for negotiation process analysis in a collective bargaining situation. Prior to the engineering strike, Boeing grossly underestimated the morale and emotions of the company's engineers. The failure to connect with employee concerns cost the company in both reputation and financial loss. The purpose of this paper is to explore the negotiation process as it unfolded during the Boeing engineering strike. Boeing The Boeing Company represents the world's largest aerospace corporation and is the foremost producer of commercial jets as well as defense, space, and security systems. Corporate offices are located in Chicago, IL supporting Boeing's two business units: Commercial and Defense, Space, and Security. The company boasts one of the worlds most talented, diverse, and creative pool of employees with approximately 160,000 individuals working throughout the United States and in more than 65 countries (The Boeing Company, 2016). Engineering Strike On February 9, 2000 approximately 17,000 Boeing engineers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were two main reasons. First, the organization had historically experienced one engineering strike, in 1993, lasting only one day (Imberman, 2001). Hence, Boeing was not anticipating a strike, especially one of any magnitude. Secondly, the organization neglected to listen to employee needs and concerns, executing one–way communication from the top down (Imberman, 2001). Subsequently, Boeing was not aware of how strongly the engineers felt about the McDonnell Douglas merger, white–collar worker benefits, and the internal work culture changes brought about by importing external ... • 3. Swot Analysis Of пЃ¶ Major Supply Chain Initiative OVERVIEW: пЃ¶Abstract пЃ¶Introduction пЃ¶Major Supply Chain Initiative taken by Airbus пЃ¶RFID Technology пЃ¶Implementation of RFID Technology пЃ¶Conclusion пЃ¶Bibliography ABSTRACT Airbus is a French company manufacturing civil aircrafts. The company produces and markets Airbus A320 and the world's largest passenger airliner, A380 apart from several other models. My individual report discusses about the Radio Frequency Identification(RFID) implementation at Airbus and how much this improved the supply chain efficiency. The main intension was to continuously improve its supply chain by mastering the supplier's approval and the surveillances of their manufacturing capabilities. To achieve this goal, Airbus developed a strategy based upon assessment of suppliers Quality Management Systems and their special processes by external bodies along with the use of international standards. The strategy needs to be deployed throughout the entire supply chain. Airbus focused on IT to manage its supply chain and improve the overall efficiency. RFID implementation played a key role in improving efficiency and visibility in its supply chain. RFID was implemented in the tool loan business where it used to lend tools to its customers that were required for the maintenance of the aircraft. The whole intention to implement RFID in the tool loan department was to improve efficiency by making tools available quickly to its customers and for proper traceability. RFID is a technology ... • 4. The Aerospace And Defense Industry Companies in the aerospace industry require high capital investment and new innovated technology. Some key ratios in the aerospace and defense industry include the current ratio, the debt to equity ratio, working capital ratio, and capital expenditures to sales. These financial ratios measure how firms leverage debt, how capable a company is of paying its obligations, and how much a company invests to facilitate growth. The table below shows 2014 financial data for 1,400 large, medium, and small company sizes within the aerospace industry (Hoovers, 2015). Additionally, the cash flows in the aerospace and defense industry are generally not a concern because contracts are paid based on a percentage of completion and cost–plus (Hoovers, 2015). A cost–plus contract is when a contractor pays all of its required expenses plus more to make profit. Manufacturers do not get paid until they have completed and delivered the products (Hoovers, 2015). Another key metric in the industry is the working capital turnover ratio. The working capital turnover ratio is nearly thirty percent. This shows the aerospace industry is capable of using its working capital to generate sales. The industry relies heavily on commercial air traffic and military defense spending (Hoovers, 2015). The average days for accounts receivable sales is 53 days, which is typical (Hoovers, 2015). Inventory turnover is also important for this industry because it is critical to see how many aerospace products ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. William E. Boeing's Influence On The Plane Making Industry William E Boeing made a company that has changed the industry of plane making, but how much influence did William E. Boeing have ton the plane making industry? Boeing's impact is large as the company has influence the industry by several ways such as starting from a small company and expanding to the world's largest company, making the first wide–bodied plane, and going the distance in reinventing the company to rise above their competitors. In August 1915 William E.Boeing applied to the Glenn L. Martin School in Los Angeles. After he completed his courses he ordered a plane known as Model TA from the Martin Factory to learn more about how planes are made. The Model TA inspired Boeing to construct aircrafts. He hired twelve men and they began building the first Boeing plane. William E. Boeing combined a factory and a seaplane hangar by Lake Union and made the first test flight of the first Boeing plane. His first airplane was a seaplane, and he sold several of them to the US Navy to use as pilot training jet during World War 1. The plane that Boeing revealed is known as the Boeing 747. The Boeing 747 was a game changer because it was the world's first wide bodied plane. According to the book "Flying over the USA: airplanes in American Life, The plane would be able to carry hundreds of passengers and the airliner would now charge less for flying and would not need as many aircrafts (Martin 13)." Another reason why this plane is significant is because it was The Boeing Company's first plane to be entirely designed on a computer. • 8. Boeing 767 Operation Management Essay The Boeing 767: From Concept to Production BSA 523: Operation Management Professor Henry P. Barnhill March 6, 2012 The Boeing Commercial Airplane Company was founded in 1916 and was located in Seattle, Washington. Now headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, Boeing is the world's largest and perhaps most well–known aerospace firm. According to their website (www.boeing.com), the company operates in three principal segments –commercial airplanes; military aircraft and missiles; and space and communications. The commercial airplane division consists of the 717, 737, 747, 757, 767 and 777 families of jetliners and the Boeing business jet. Boeing faces stiff competition from international aerospace companies seeking to increase market share, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With regard to the 767, Boeing was able to use parametric cost techniques to formulate an accurate estimate of total assembly hours required, thereby facilitating net present value (NPV) analysis of the project. Besides the above–mentioned tools and methods, Boeing also employed a variety of human resources to plan, schedule and adjust project performance. There were Audit Teams that were composed of seasoned Boeing managers, audit teams investigated every facet of the product development process including finance, manufacturing, technology and management. These teams promoted project development by catching errors early and directly reporting them to upper management for resolution. The Management Visibility System schedules were prominently posted for review, and weekly status meetings were held in which department supervisors notified each other of their needs and potential problems. Supervisors were required to stand up at meetings and explain why they were unable to meet production goals. Managers were then entrusted with clearing all hurdles to achieving those goals. The Production Change Board (PCB) reviewed all engineering–related change requests and assessed their cost and schedule impact. A feasible implementation approach was then developed for each approved request .By resorting to a wide variety of technical and human resource planning and coordination tools and strategies, Boeing was able to tackle the 767 development project ... • 9. Boeing Versus Airbus: Trade Disputes Introduction For years the commercial aircraft industry has been an American success story. Until 1980, U.S. manufacturers held a virtual monopoly. Despite the rise of the European–based Airbus Industrie, this persisted through the mid–1990s, when two U.S. firms, Boeing and McDonnell Douglas, accounted for over two–thirds of world market share. In late 1996, many analysts thought that U.S. dominance in this industry would be further strengthened when Boeing announced a decision to acquire Mc–Donnell Douglas for $13.3 billion, creating an aerospace behemoth nearly twice the size of its nearest competitor. The industry is routinely the largest net contributor to the U.S. balance of trade, and Boeing is the largest U.S. exporter. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Perhaps fore–most among these is that the costs of developing a new airliner are enormous. Boeing spent a reported $5 billion developing and tooling up to produce the 777 wide–bodied jetliner that it introduced in 1994. The development costs for Airbus's new aircraft, the 555–seat A380 "super–jumbo," are estimated to be anywhere between $10 billion and $15 billion. (The A380 is Airbus's direct competitor to Boeing's profitable 747 model line.) Given such enormous development costs, a company must capture a significant share of world demand to break even. In the case of the 777, for example, Boeing needed to sell more than 200 aircraft to break even, a figure that represented about 15 percent of predicted industry sales for this class of aircraft between 1994 and 2004. Given the volume of sales required to break even, it can take up to 10 to 14 years of production for an air–craft model to turn a profit, and this is on top of the 5 to 6 years of negative cash flows during development. On the manufacturing side, a significant experience curve exists in aircraft production. Due to learning effects, on average, unit cost falls by about 20 percent with each doubling of accumulated output. A company that fails to move along the experience curve faces a significant unit–cost disadvantage. A company that achieves only half of the market share required to break even will suffer a 20 percent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Full Body Scanners in Airports Full Body Scanners in Airports A full body scanner that is a device that is able to detect objects hidden under clothing by constructing a full 3–D image of a person, complete with detailed body contours. There are presently two types of scanning technology that are used in full body scanners: millimeter wave scanners and backscatter scanners. A millimeter wave scanner is able to use radio waves that are of tremendously high frequencies, which are decoded in order to produce a 3–D image. A backscatter scanner makes use of high–energy rays that scatter when they hit solid materials. This allows a backscatter scanner to generate a detailed image of the person being scanned. Both scanners are effective at detecting contraband that may be... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They say the low level beam does deliver a slight dose of radiation to the body but because the beam concentrates on the skin, one of the most radiation–sensitive organs of the human body, that dose may be up to twenty times higher than first estimated. University of California biochemist David Agard is quoted saying "While the dose would be safe if it were distributed through the volume of the entire body, the dose to the skin may be dangerously high." He adds, "Ionizing radiation such as the X–rays used in these scanners have the potential to induce chromosome damage, and that can lead to cancer." People with medical implants such as pacemakers should avoid electromagnetic generating pulse body scanners as they can significantly alter the waveform of the pacemaker pulse. Travelers are not informed that they are in the line to get a full body scan until they actually see it in the process. Once a traveler questions it, the TSA becomes suspicious and the traveler could be interrogated. There are issues with the lack of signs in the airports informing travelers about these full body scanners and the lack of signs informing travelers that you can opt out of them for another form of screening method. A pro of a full body scanner is it detects items such as non–metallic weapons and explosives not picked up by metal detectors but the body scanner only scans surfaces. • 13. A Case Of Airbus : The Key Drivers For Globalisation A case of Airbus Introduction Globalisation describes a process when capital, domestic product and labour markets become more integrated across national boundaries. The key drivers for globalisation are: the advances in transport and communication, the increasing level of international trade and labour has become more internationally mobile (Anonymous, 2007). As a result of globalisation, more and more businesses are setting up or buying operations in different nations. When a foreign company invests in a country, by buying commercial properties, such as a building, factory or a shop it is called inward investment. Organisations that operate in several countries are known as transnational corporations (TNCs) (BBC, 2014). Airbus is an example of TNCs that has operated successfully since the 1970s. Since it first entered service in 1974, Airbus has traded more than 13,200 aircraft to over 500 clients and operators (Airbus, 2013). In 2014 it generated € 60,713 million in revenue in comparison with the revenue made in 2013 (€ 57,567 million) the revenue has increase by € 3,146 million. This is the result of delivering more aircraft than previous year (Airbusgroup, 2015a). The purpose of this paper is to carry out a strategic analysis of the aircraft manufacturer Airbus using the PEST model. • 14. Reduction of Part Counts and Composite Materials for... Composite materials comprise significantly greater percentages of airframe structural materials used throughout the aerospace manufacturing process. This increased usage has led many individuals within the Air Force (AF) community and Department of Defense (DoD) leaders to restudy the life cycle cost (LCC) models used to estimate the costs for most weapon systems. A series of composite affordability initiatives (CAI) have culminated in significant evidence over the last three decades which aids in better quantifying the impact of primarily advanced composite materials in the airframe structures of aircraft. Current accelerated use of advanced composite materials in aircraft, sporting goods, and medical products is a result of the versatility of composites. This paper finds that a significant relationship exists between the reduction of the part counts and the large scale advanced composite materials used in life cycle cost (LCC) models for aircraft structures. The reduction percentages in the part counts led to reductions in the percentages of touch labor hours in design, design support, testing, tooling, manufacturing, and quality assurance. This percentage of reduction affects most development and production cost categories. Introduction: The available life cycle cost (LCC) models and procurement strategies do not take into consideration the varied manufacturing techniques for advanced composite materials. The increased use of advanced composite materials in aerospace ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The development of the aircraft required enormous investments to around €12 billion. Up to now, in its second life year, 200 orders have already been made and 13 A380's have been delivered. Off course, this is insufficient to regain the huge development costs and everything depends on the success of the first A380 planes. Nonetheless, as the world passenger traffic and congestion of airports increases each year, it is almost certain that new orders on the A380 will soon be placed, especially by emerging countries such as China and India. 2.1.4 Investment in R&D According to the Invest in France Agency, French aerospace companies invest more than 16% of their turnover in R&D activities in order to prepare for the future and to preserve their place in a highly competitive environment. This is more than their competitors in other countries. In order to keep developing competitive products, the French industry players have joined forces in 2 ambitious research programs: Clean sky (EU level) and an agreement with the ministry of ecology and sustainable development to establish a Civil Aeronautics Research Council. Various new technologies and breakthrough inventions have been developed for the A380, making it the world's most advanced and efficient airplane. 2.2 Weaknesses 2.2.1 Governmental support The financial budget of the French government available for aerospace companies is quite small, in comparison with the government support in the United States.

Boeing occupied 57% of the world's existing fleet in 1992 where one–third of total revenues came from military aircraft and remaining two–third came from commercial aircraft. By the end of 1992, Boeing had delivered total 7183 commercial aircraft into the global aviation market. These included 59% of short–to–medium range aircrafts (727 & 737), 27.7% of medium–to–long range aircrafts (707,757 & 767) and 13.3% of long range aircrafts (747). For the other case, Airbus occupied 16% of the world's existing fleet in 1992 and only 972 commercial aircraft had been delivered by the end of 1992. These included 37.2% of short–to–medium range aircrafts (A320 & A321) and 62.3% of medium–to–long range aircrafts (A300 & A310) without any long range aircrafts. As a result, Boeing had occupied 3.5 times larger aviation market and delivered approximately 7 times more aircraft than Airbus by the end of 1992 (shows in Figure 1). For the mid–year report of 2014, Qantas reported losses reaching $252 million. Joyce claims this loss is due to "structural economic shifts exacerbated by an uneven playing field in Australian aviation policy" (Qantas Media Releases, 2014) in addition to the continued cost of the transformation. The "shift" that Joyce refers to is in regard to foreign investment in domestic airlines. For example, a significant percentage of Virgin Blue's ownership is concentrated in three foreign airlines that have the support of their respective governments. Joyce's argument is that the current Australian aviation policy allows majority foreign–owned carriers to operate domestically, which greatly distorts the Australian domestic market. In addition to Virgin Blue, these foreign–owned companies include Singapore Airlines, Ethiad, and a plethora of other minor carriers. All of these competitors receive substantial subsidies that put Australian–owned and/or controlled companies at a competitive and economic disadvantage. Qantas has to rethink their marketing strategy to the customer while continuing to prioritize spending and downsizing costs. Joyce's precarious and lofty goal is to have a $2 billion cost reduction as well as reducing the Group's debt by $1 billion by the end of FY17. Low Cost Airlines Essay CANDIDATE NUMBER: 1801655 MN5333 INTERNATIONAL STRATEGY AND ENTERPRENEURSHIP ANSWER 1: Low fare price is one of the main thing passengers/ fliers consider when looking to fly, therefore for most, low budget airlines are their first option. Passengers are willing to give up their comfort and other in–flight services such as entertainment and during their journey for low ticket prices. However, over the past few decades, operating long haul flights was not to the advantage of these budget airlines. The cost of fuel made it for the most part, took up a huge proportion of the costs needed to manage /operate these flights.According to The Economist article, Oasis airline went into liquidation a year after they had started flying from London to Vancouver at low–cut prices in 2008. Regardless of their flop, some other airline companies including Air Asia are giving the no frills model a try. Scoot Airlines for instance offer cut–price tickets for six–hour flights between Singapore and Tianjin; this is not a definite medium or long–haul flight.Time zones / time difference is one of the challenges these low budget airlines faced in flying long distances. Some airports have night curfews which makes it hard / impossible for the planes to turnaround the same day. This leads to an increase in their operation cost, because they would have to be responsible for lodging and feeding their crew. This is another reason why these low budget airlines adapt the free ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The forecast assumes that development costs would be $8 billion. There was great uncertainty surrounding the manufacturing cost of the 7E7. The element that adds the most uncertainty to the manufacturing costs are in the engineering of the aircraft. While the engineering costs could be high, Boeing was hoping that the lower construction costs of using the composite materials would compensate for the elevated engineering costs.

Factors such as beta and the debt/equity ratio for Boeing and other companies in the same industry could impact how much Boeing's cost of capital could be. The marginal tax rate for Boeing was expected to be around 35%. Yields on three–month Treasury bonds were .85% and the yield on 30–year Treasury bonds was 4.56%. On June 16, 2003, Boeing's stock closed at a price of $36.41. An important factor in figuring Boeing's cost of capital would be that Boeing was separated into two different businesses.
