Representation in music magazines

• Representation is key in modern society as this is what the
majority of productions are judged on , representation can
also be related to people , events , objects and places . All
these aspects can be judged by representation so how they
look is one aspect , and this will be what I need to remember
when creating my magazine . Furthermore representation is
not only identity it is also how they are constructed within the
process , a few markers of identity are class , age , ethnicity
and gender . So when creating my magazine I need to make
sure I take all of these factors into consideration especially
with the main image on the front page , because I want the
band on the front to be represented in the correct way .

• On the front cover of this NME magazine , Alex Turner is wearing sunglasses , the
picture is a fairly bright picture but there is no sunlight in shot . So because he is
wearing the glasses Alex Turner can be represented as an arrogant character ,
furthermore the other band members are pulling straight faces but Alex Turner is
pulling a frowning face which can also continue the arrogance that he is showing
. A Artic Monkeys fan would know that he is an arrogant individual but from the
outside he is being represented as a arrogant man , this can also link into gender
in that some females may believe that all males are arrogant and he is not
helping himself by the way he is being represented in the picture . But this
arrogance represents into the Indie music that the Artic Monkeys produces ,
they produce some rock elements within their music and this could be why he is
being represented in this way within the picture . Going into further detail it
could be argued that all members within the band concentrate a lot on their hair
, this would go against gender representation . This is because stereotypically
females take a long time doing their hair but in this case the band members have
obviously used a lot of products to make it looks this way . But this gives the
band a iconic representation within the way that they look , also hierarchy is
shown in this front page . This can also add to representation in the sense that
females have less status then males , and this is represented in this picture
because of the way all of the band is standing especially Alex Turner but this
clearly represents that he is the lead signer of the band . When creating my
magazine I need to take all of this aspects into consideration .
