The document discusses how a media product represents social groups. It summarizes that the magazine portrays both male and female bands as stereotypical loud, drinking and rebellious 20-somethings. Photos of one band, The Banshees, show the women as confident, stylish and arrogant. Photos of a male band aim to portray them as more relaxed while still stylish. Fonts and colors used in the magazine are meant to seem "dirty" and "rough" to connect with the target audience.
How media products represent social groups through visuals and styling
1. How does your media product represent particular social groups? My media product shows, both males and females as stereo typical young 20 something's. It shows them to be loud, brash, smoking and drinking trouble causers with style! I gave this impression to the audience mainly through my article with The Banshees. I chose to have some of them swearing, saying how much they’d had to drink the night before and bitching about other stars and singers. And as my target audience have similar hobbies and interests as the people featured in my magazine this representation would give the audience a chance to compare lives and feel closer to the stars. The shots I used of The Banshees also represented them in a certain way. For example the shot on the front cover showed them as confident young women, who were stylish and possibly a little arrogant. The first image in my article shows them as, loud, boisterous and rebellious. The image gives this impression because of the way it is set up and also because of the props. The lead singer is shown to be shouting into the microphone, showing that she is loud. The drummer is also show shouting with her drumstick in the air, showing that she is also loud but boisterous. The two guitarists are shown being cheeky and giggly. In my second image on my article it shows one of the guitarists looking rather cool and chilled. This balances out the earlier image, giving a more relaxed sense to the band. The amplifier used in this image is a really good prop to use as it still gives the image that connection with loud music. The way I chose to edit this image represents the person in it. I gave it an individual look with a bit of colour. All poses and props give out these impressions and are crucial when creating an image. I represented the male band in my contents as stylish and easy going. Although my magazine is a rock magazine, full of awesome men and women who drink, swear and party non stop I wanted to even it out a bit by showing that this band has a softer, more relaxed side. The photo of Elle Walker on my contents page is simple yet effective as it gives the audience an idea of what she's like. For instance, the fact that she has bright orange hair shows that she is an individual, (something that is common in this genre). Her facial expression shows that she may be a cocky and confident rock chick with loads of attitude. All of these presumptions about her personality are made just through the use of camera angles, photo editing and poses. The fonts I used throughout my magazine give the feel of “dirty” and “rough” which is what I feel would connect with the target audience. As my target audience are loud, party goers, the jagged, not all there fonts really represent them well. The deep reds I used in my front cover and contents also reflect the readers personalitites. In my audience feedback I did I found that all four people asked thought my fonts were effective.
