The HI-TECC Program aims to help students who are behind in credits graduate on time by providing individualized, computer-assisted instruction. Eligible students have fewer than 10 credits, a GPA below 2.0, and have been retained for at least one year. The program consists of academic courses delivered through Compass Learning software, counseling support, and vocational education classes to help students develop career skills.
2. HI-TECC PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY
The HI-TECC Program’s philosophy and chief goal is
to “Cultivate students success by providing
educational services intended to accommodate
individual learning styles academic and effective
needs, interest, and special talents.”
3. PURPOSE
The HI-TECC program targets students who are one or
more years behind and unable to graduate with the class
they entered in kindergarten (thirteenth year), have a grade
point average below 2.0; and at least 10 high school
graduation credit.
4. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
In order for a student to be eligible for enrollment, the
student must:
have been a student at the high school s/he is
currently enrolled for the entire semester before
applying for HI-TECC
have a minimum of thirteen credits
have been retained at least one year, thereby, not
granting before the graduation date of the class
with whom they entered kindergarten
5. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS CONT.
have earned a minimum of once credit in vocational
coursework, and or be currently enrolled in
vocational classes
be functioning at a minimum fifth grade level in both
reading and mathematics in order to ensure the
ability to perform in the computer-assisted
instructional laboratory
not exhibit or have a history of severe discipline
problems or emotional problems
have parents attend a formal interview and seminar
along with the student
6. PROGRAM PROCEDURES
Step 1: Explain to students and parents what is the
HI-TECC program, and how and why the student is a
candidate for enrollment
Step2: Present and explain the Consent for
Enrollment Form. Make sure parent signs it
immediately since it is the only state mandated form
Step 3: Present and explain Plan A and Plan B
Graduation Options. Parent and student signatures
are required
7. PROGRAM PROCEDURES CONT.
Step 4: Give student and parent a copy of the class
rules. CLEARLY explain to them each rule and give
examples of their application
Step 5: Explain the consequences of not conforming
to the rules of the program. Give parent a copy of the
school’s disciplinary plan and the OCSD 5’s Student
Code of Conduct
Step 6: Close the interview by tanking the parent and
student for their time. Ask them do they have any
question. Answer any and all questions. Assure them
that they will hear from you within five school days
8. HI-TECC PROGRAM’S ANATOMY
The HI-TECC lab consists of 25 computer stations
for students and a teacher and a file server
Compass Learning supports the HI-TECC program
with a comprehensive collection of computer-based
academic courseware
The computer curriculum accommodates many
different learning styles, and permits the students to
learn new material in small steps
The computer courseware involves students on a
multi-sensory level
Compass Learning provides a full battery of
competency tests at each level in the system
9. EDUCATION
The HI-TECC program is a Performance-Based
Diploma Program
The instructional design of the program is less
structured than that of a traditional program
Instruction is primarily delivered in an integrated
learning environment where students needs are
met with teacher’s knowledge, skills, and teaching
styles to complete applications
10. COUNSELING
Counseling is an important part of any program for at-
risk student
An at-risk program attempts to reduce and/or eliminate
the feeling of alienation by providing a family
atmosphere
HI-TECC students enter with many unresolved problems
that can intrude with their continuum of academic
achievement
In the HI-TECC program, the teacher monitors student
progress in the academic, vocational, and attendance
area, and works with the counselor, vocational teachers,
and the assigned school administrators to resolve any
problems that may occur
11. CAREERS: VOCATIONAL EDUCATION
Participants in the program are required to enroll
and pass vocational education classes
A vocational teacher/counselor is assigned to work
directly with HI-TECC students two hours a day
Once the student completes his/her vocational
requirements he/she will be placed a Work
Experience Class

educational services intended to accommodate individual
learning styles, academic needs, personal interests, and
special talents.” This computer-assisted instructional
(CAI) program uses non-traditional methods to instruct
students and consists of three major components:
academics, counseling and career development.
