Information for Students: You may have two (2) attempts for this assessment.
• If your first attempt is not successful, your teacher will discuss your results with you and
will arrange a second attempt.
• If your second attempt is not successful, you will be required to re-enrol in this unit.
Only one re-assessment attempt will be granted for each assessment item.
Time Allowed: 7 hours
Materials Provided by Assessor: All materials and tools required to complete the task will
be provided.
Materials and Equipment to be supplied by the Student: Personal protective equipment
PPE and nail bag.
Assessment Range and Conditions: Assessment will be conducted in simulated work
environment CIT Bruce under teacher supervision at all times. If at any stage the assessor
deems the assessment to be unsafe it will be stopped. Access to all resources, manual and
standards is permitted. All mobile phones are to be switch off.
Assessment Criteria: To achieve a satisfactory result, your assessor will be looking for your
ability to demonstrate the key skills/tasks/knowledge detailed in the Assessment Task to
industry standard.
The criteria that you will be assessed for this task are:
Planning and Processes Planned, organised task and perform work following
accepted industry processes and standards.
Take responsibility for own
outputs in work and learning
Actively participated and engaged as an individual and/or
team member in all tasks and activities.
Specifications Job meets specification requirements, to industry standard
Time Management Task achieved within time and available information
requirements
Communication Written and oral communication met minimal job /task
requirements
WH&S Maintain a safe work environment and complied with
WHS regulations supervisor instructions and used
appropriate PPE for required tasks
Clean-Up Materials, tools and equipment are stored in line with
instruction. Area is left clean and free from hazards

Assessment Task Instructions for Students
Using the documents provided:
Participate in the JSA and toolbox talk for the work environment and task.
Calculate your stairs and balustrade, select tools and equipment, prepare materials
for construction and construct the stairs.
You will be required to submit the following documents on completion
• You are require to fill out and complete the JSA (Job Safety Analysis) and Toolbox
talk
• Calculate rise and goings of stairs
• Calculate the Handrail and Balustrade
• List the required tools and equipment needed for the tasks
• List the required materials for this task
• Review the self-assessment checklist
• Construct a set of stairs with Balustrade to code and working drawings

Construct External Stairs Checklist

The task:
• The rise and goings are to code and match the drawing design
• The newel posts are cut to meet the drawing design
• Stringers have been set out according to job drawings and meet specifications
• Stringers are housed to accommodate treads according to plans and
specifications

the stairs safely and in a logical sequence
The task:
• Stringers and treads have been assembled together using the correct fixings
and meet specifications
• Stringers and treads were assembled in a logical sequence
• Assembled stairs meet the landing at the specified height
• Stairs sit well and are in wind
• Housing, cuts, joints and fixings are all finished to industry standards

and install a balustrade.
The task:
• Newel post cut and installed according to plans and specifications
• Balusters are installed to calculations, they are plumb and with consistent
spacing’s
• Handrail was installed at the correct height and was parallel to the stringer

T8 Student had been assessed and uploaded photos of task to eLearn before clean up commenced ☐
Student de-constructed the task in a safe and methodical system ☐
All material was disposed of appropriately, reusing and recycling materials when applicable ☐

Calculate Rise and Going of the Stairs
You will need to calculate the overall Going and Rise of the flight of stairs.
Then calculate the individual Rise and Goings of each tread
Stringer 240 x 45mm Marginline 45mm
Treads 3/ 90 x 35mm Hand rail 90 x 35mm
Balisters 35 x 35mm Newels 90 x 35mm
Deck joist 240 x 45mm Decking 90 x 19

Calculate the Handrail and Balustrade
You will need to calculate you balustrade spacing’s for this set of stairs.
1. Calculate overall spacing between the 2 newel posts.
2. Calculate the space between each baluster
Stringer 240 x 45mm Marginline 45mm
Treads 3/ 90 x 35mm Hand rail 90 x 35mm
Balisters 35 x 35mm Newels 90 x 35mm
Deck joist 240 x 45mm Decking 90 x 19
Flight hand rail 865mm Deck hand rail 1000mm

Construct a set of stairs with a balustrade
In the barn workshop
• Set out and house stringers according to your plans
• Cut and install treads to specified width
• Construct the landing as specified
• Install completed staircase according to plan
• Construct balustrade according to calculations and plan
Once the Stair Case has been deemed satisfactory:
• De-construct the structure
• De-nail and restack timbers
• Any timber below 500mm gets put into a designated bin
• The treads need to be restacked
• The stringers need to be stacked in a tidely manner at a space selected by your teacher
• Finalise this document and submit to your assessor

Only one re-assessment attempt will be granted for each assessment item. Time Allowed: 7 hours Materials Provided by Assessor: All materials and tools required to complete the task will be provided. Materials and Equipment to be supplied by the Student: Personal protective equipment PPE and nail bag. Assessment Range and Conditions: Assessment will be conducted in simulated work environment CIT Bruce under teacher supervision at all times. If at any stage the assessor deems the assessment to be unsafe it will be stopped. Access to all resources, manual and standards is permitted. All mobile phones are to be switch off. Assessment Criteria: To achieve a satisfactory result, your assessor will be looking for your ability to demonstrate the key skills/tasks/knowledge detailed in the Assessment Task to industry standard. The criteria that you will be assessed for this task are: Planning and Processes Planned, organised task and perform work following accepted industry processes and standards. Calculate your stairs and balustrade, select tools and equipment, prepare materials for construction and construct the stairs. You will be required to submit the following documents on completion • You are require to fill out and complete the JSA (Job Safety Analysis) and Toolbox talk • Calculate rise and goings of stairs • Calculate the Handrail and Balustrade • List the required tools and equipment needed for the tasks • List the required materials for this task • Review the self-assessment checklist • Construct a set of stairs with Balustrade to code and working drawings

The task: • Newel post cut and installed according to plans and specifications • Balusters are installed to calculations, they are plumb and with consistent spacing’s • Handrail was installed at the correct height and was parallel to the stringer ☐ T8 Student had been assessed and uploaded photos of task to eLearn before clean up commenced ☐ Student de-constructed the task in a safe and methodical system ☐ All material was disposed of appropriately, reusing and recycling materials when applicable ☐

  • 7. © Canberra Institute of Technology RTO Code 0101 Page 7 of 8 Cit.edu.au Construct a set of stairs with a balustrade In the barn workshop • Set out and house stringers according to your plans • Cut and install treads to specified width • Construct the landing as specified • Install completed staircase according to plan • Construct balustrade according to calculations and plan Once the Stair Case has been deemed satisfactory: • De-construct the structure • De-nail and restack timbers • Any timber below 500mm gets put into a designated bin • The treads need to be restacked • The stringers need to be stacked in a tidely manner at a space selected by your teacher • Finalise this document and submit to your assessor
