Discuss the emphasis on intrinsic motivation and follower development; note that the leader is a good listener who assesses follower strengths and cultivates them. Keeping the characteristics of the 21st century leader in mind (from previous slide), technological expertise is a priority. However, the 21st century leader knows that s/he cannot learn all of the technology, but rather must cultivate that knowledge and skill in the follower.
Transformational leadership is concerned with emotions, values, ethics, standards, and long-term goals. Includes assessing followers’ motives, satisfying their needs, and treating them as “full human beings.”
“Transformational leadership fits the needs of today’s work groups who want to be inspired and empowered to succeed in times of uncertainty.”
This includes leadership with vision and charisma – provide the support for the follower to be empowered.
Transformational leadership is aware of the impact of one person on the other; the relationship between leader and followers is both reciprocal and positive.
