• 8-18 year olds spend an average of 7 hours and 38
minutes per day using entertainment media (More than
53 hours/week)
• Time spent with media increased 1 hour and 17 minutes
per day over the last 5 years
• Only 3 in 10 youngsters have limits by parents on time
spent watching TV, playing videogames, or using the
computer.
• Black and Hispanic children spend more time with media
than white children (4 and ½ hours more than white
children)

Digital Media Use Among Children and Teens • Study by Kaiser Family Foundation • 8-18 year olds spend an average of 7 hours and 38 minutes per day using entertainment media (More than 53 hours/week) • Time spent with media increased 1 hour and 17 minutes per day over the last 5 years • Only 3 in 10 youngsters have limits by parents on time spent watching TV, playing videogames, or using the computer. • Black and Hispanic children spend more time with media than white children (4 and ½ hours more than white children)

  1. Mariane’s Presentation Starts on this slide Discuss the emphasis on intrinsic motivation and follower development; note that the leader is a good listener who assesses follower strengths and cultivates them. Keeping the characteristics of the 21st century leader in mind (from previous slide), technological expertise is a priority. However, the 21st century leader knows that s/he cannot learn all of the technology, but rather must cultivate that knowledge and skill in the follower. Transformational leadership is concerned with emotions, values, ethics, standards, and long-term goals. Includes assessing followers’ motives, satisfying their needs, and treating them as “full human beings.” “Transformational leadership fits the needs of today’s work groups who want to be inspired and empowered to succeed in times of uncertainty.” This includes leadership with vision and charisma – provide the support for the follower to be empowered. Transformational leadership is aware of the impact of one person on the other; the relationship between leader and followers is both reciprocal and positive.

  4. How do you communicate with your staff and faculty? Are you as clear as Ronald Regan was when he objectified the $1 trillion dollars by comparing it to the Empire State Building. Or, are you like Jimmy Carter whose communication style made “working with him like looking at the wrong side of a tapestry – blurry and indistinct.”
  5. Change is native to our field. How do we prepare for it? What are the major changes that will have lasting effects on education? Brain-based research. How do people typically react to change? Technology, technology, technology
