2. ■ We decided to inform the group about the narrative of the horror trailer and ideas we
thought of such as technical and ancillary ideas as well as giving an example of an
inspirational text.
■ The reasons why we decided to pitch our ideas to our class mates were to gain a
clarification of ideas, feedback from peers, feedback from teacher and a deeper
understanding of what is required from us through this task.
3. How did creating the pitch support your
understanding of the task at hand?
■ Creating the pitch enabled us to lay out our ideas and organise what we would want to
do when creating our final products. In order for us to get a better understanding of
what the audience is attracted to, we decided to pitch it to our class mates who fit into
our target audience’s age bracket.
■ This helped us understand what will appeal to the audience and what we need to
change about our ideas in order to satisfy them.
4. What did your peers encourage you to
think about?
■ Our peers encouraged us to think about the technical devices we are planning on
using. This is helpful, because it allowed us to think it through and come to a
conclusion; we decided to use dim lighting, non-diegetic sounds of instruments such
as a piano as well as sounds that are conventional to horror trailers such as door
creaks, creepy laughter or eerie music.
■ Another thing that we were encouraged to think about is what we could change about
our narrative. Based on our peers’ feedback, we decided to change the name of the
film from “Phantasmal” to “Occult” and create a clearer version of the narrative by
focusing on the antagonist’s purpose rather than his background.
5. On reflection, are there any developments
you wish to make – after giving the pitch and
thinking your decisions through?
■ After receiving our feedback, we understood that we did not give enough information
about the technical devices we were going to use. This might have been because we
were unsure of what we could do in terms of editing and sound. Therefore, reflecting
on our pitch, we decided to get into more detail about our technical ideas.
■ Also, we decided to change our narrative. We will no longer have Damon’s cousin,
Spencer, as part of the plot, because we want to focus on the main characters and it
would be easier for the audience to understand the narrative this way. Also, the
protagonists will be staying in the same room rather than separate rooms, as this will
emphasise their friendship and the fact that they are in the situation together.
