2. Importance of audience feedback
Our fellow media pupils completed a survey for us so we could get an
understanding of what part of our target audience thought about our
film.The students were aged 17-19. OurT.A ranges from 12 to 35 and
is aimed at males more than females. I find it helpful to get feedback
from various different demographics, so I got feedback from my
parents, cousin and family friends, who completed
surveys/questionnaires. Finding out what the audience like and dislike
is very helpful when creating media products, so that in the future
you know how to improve.
We can get feedback/opinions on our trailer in various different ways.
One way is thoughVimeo, by uploading it people can comment
directly to us. Other ways could include posting questionnaires/social
media status, online surveys, focus groups, post our trailer in online
forums/site where people rate films etc. lastly, we can send our film to
Sight and sound magazine, Little white lies and Empire to get expert
feedback.The wider the amount of feedback
(opinions/advice/likes/dislikes etc.) you get, the more your
improvements can be informed.
3. Feedback from classmates and
teachers.
Our trailer was shot with a Canon EOS 700D. We shot four
times on four different days, therefore we had a lot of
footage and didn’t have to go reshoot. During the edit
process we asked fellow students and teachers for
feedback in order for us to improve as we edited.This
allowed us to understand what different demographics
(age and experience) opinions were so far of our trailer.
This then gave us invaluable insight that we used make
improvements.
For example, at the beginning of our trailer we had a time
lapse of cars. Originally, the cars started in focus, then
went blurry and back into focus. However, we were
suggested to have the cars start out of focus and remain
the same the entire shot. We had another shot of my hand
tapping on my knee. However, we were suggested to
remove it, as you could see my festival bands, which took
away from the drama of the shot.
4. Also we used to have the tiles of the actors name
earlier in the film.They used to be with the
actors/tress in the forest but our teacher suggested
we place them later on in the trailer, as well as add
some more postmodern elements like slowing down
shots.

When creating the poster, I was also given feedback. Our media technician
suggested that I erase the back of the actor looking right head. I was sceptical at
first but once I had done it I realised he was right, it made the picture look more
professional, whole and fluid.

magazine cover I didn’t
have much feedback as I
created it over the
weekend alone. However, I
did ask my mum because
she could relate to the
older adults in ourT.A and
she suggested that I keep it
simple in order to highlight
the few things on the
cover.

6. We used a questionnaire because we wanted to get a wide range of feedback from T.A in an organised fashion. To diversify the
response we incorporated closed and open questions. They each also served us specific purposes closed questions were for
statistics, open for reviews and opinions. Numerical feedback (statistics) are helpful because it means we can make averages and
learn how many people think a certain thing about something. Opinions/reviews are also helpful because it allows us to reflect on
what people say and use it moving forward to shape our trailer.
7. Results
• Film rating: A vast majority rated our film good. Around a quarter said V.Good and under a third was
for average and poor. Even though fellow classmates completed the questionnaire, I do not think it
was biased because when we gave feedback no one was present (who made the trailer) and no one
knew who’s trailer belonged to who.
• Narrative: Intriguing and confusing were by far the most voted for relating to our narrative, with
nearly everyone voting for them. Upon further analysis people liked the narrative because of the
dialogue. “I think the conversation between the characters explained the film really well”, “I like the
voiceover” and “I like the trailer because the talking explains everything”.
• Soundtrack: Around 2/3 said the soundtrack was fully complementary, nearly 1/3 said suitable and a
small amount said unsuitable. The soundtrack has been something that our open ended questions
allowed us to understand was something we did well. “My favourite thing are the soundtracks’ and
“The music helped set the mood. That was something they did well”.
• Social Class: The majority of the class thought our film was aimed at “working class”. This was
interesting to us because we hadn’t aimed at any particular class. We had hoped to intrigue every
class to widen our T.A.
• Alternative, Mainstream or cult: Over ¾ of people thought our film was alternative, which was
interesting because that’s what we had hoped. The next biggest demographic being cult. This was
good news for us because cult followings are known for their ferocious support.
• Age Classifications: We rated our film 12A, which a lot of people agreed with. The next biggest group
was 12 suggesting we got our classification right. A small Amount of people thought it was 15. This
wasn’t a major issue as this was probably 1 or 2 people out of 25.
• Camera Work: We were very happy that around ¾ of people said our camera work was exiting. This
lets us know that in general people think we did a good job, to further cement this the last ¼ said it
was appropriate, so no thought it was boring. “The editing was my favourite thing”.
• Editing: Around 2/3 thought our editing was clever. I agree with this to a certain extent. I feel at times
it was clever but I would deem it more appropriate.
8. Conclusion
In general the questionnaire feedback was everything we expected.
Getting this feedback was helpful because it gave us invaluable
insight into what certain audience thought about our trailer. In the
future I would get the feedback during production, so that we could
make more changes.
