Analysing the Auditions
Here is the link to the auditions:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_0QPZKMH8Y&feature=youtu.be The audition
process made it clear as to who we wanted to use as the protagonists Eve and Richard.
Looking at the candidates, it is clear to see that:
Auditions for Eve,
Actor 1 (Amy Winterbottom) Presents a clear understanding of the text and performs the
script well from an alternative perspective. However Amy's performance didn’t seem to
reflect the energy and interpretation we would like her to convey. Also the applicant’s
appearance seemed very difficult to alter, as we are going for a female actress who seems
quite pale.
Actor 2 (Lucy Cooke) – This candidate performed with no enthusiasm and seemed to have a
monotone voice throughout. Variation in tone is vital to show how worried and upset Eve is.
The candidate does however, have the appearance we are looking for, but due to her
inability to adapt to the character, we will not cast her as Eve.
Actor 3 (Lucy Brownutt) – This performance was performed well, and contained an element
of Eve in her appearance. She did however; portray the character as very reluctantly and
there was no sadness or sympathy felt when watching the audition. As this scene is very
powerful and pivotal, it is crucial we capture the correct portrayal.
Actor 4 (Esther Drake) – This actor really adapted to the role of Olive, similarly to the
previous actor, she presented great sadness and worry to the camera, really getting to grips
with the role. She took the script away and studied the character before she performed it,
showing great passion, wanting to work on this project. Her appearance fitted Eve's criteria
and I feel like this actor has a more relatable look. She has a distinctive look and it is one
that isn’t seen in the media that often. Showing her contrast from society mentally and
physically.
Actor 5 (Emma Brown) – This actor seemed to be very shy when reading the script, and kept
on struggling keeping up. There was no passion or enthusiasm. Variation in tone is vital to
show how worried and upset Eve is. The candidate does however, have the appearance we
are looking for, but due to her inability to adapt to the character, we will not cast her as Eve.
Overall, the actors showed specific elements that we were interested in, however only two
of them successfully fit the criteria of Eve. Actor 3 and Actor 4. After a long process of
thinking and discussing, we decided to select Esther Drake (Actor 4) to play the role of Eve.
Her distinctive look and her passion for the film made her stand out from the other
candidates. As we need to cast someone who wants to be in this film and will be passionate
all the way throughout.
Auditions for David,
Actor 8 (Simon Aske) This candidate did not seemto show ant emotion throughout the
audition. They had no enthusiasm and seemed to have a monotone throughout. There was
no emotion shown, to portray the character as very reluctantly. There was no sadness or
sympathy shown whilst watching the audition.
Actor 9 (Max Robinson) although this candidate was very good, reading the script, there was
no facial expressions made throughout. Facial expressions in auditions, I believe is very
important as when actually filming the film we wanted to make sure there were no errors
made.
Actor 10 (Martyn Redhead) This candidate gave a very distinctive audition it, was one of the
best ones, as this candidate was enthusiastic when reading the script and showed a lot of
emotion. The candidate showed a clear understanding of the text. This performance was
performed well, and contained an element David in his appearance. However, did no
physically fit the role of David.
Actor 11 (Richard Scott) This candidate presented great sadness, anger and worry to the
camera, really getting the grips with the role. He took the script away and studied the
character before he performed it, showing a great deal of passion wanting to work with this
film project. His appearance fitted David's criteria and as a team we feel like this actor has
more of a relatable look. So this is the reason why we chose this candidate.
