2. Representation of Age
As all of our characters are teenagers the representation of age in our film opening is
extremely important, we wanted to represent Simeons character S.Dout as the guy that
everyone wants to be in school life. We wanted to show him as popular and someone
that everyone wanted to be with to improve their chance of becoming popular just like
S.Dout.
With my character Charlie we wanted a huge contrast between Charlie and S.Dout, we
made the character of S.Dout and gave him certain characteristics and then completely
turned them on the head and gave the complete opposite for Charlie. These made
some interesting binary oppositions between the two characters such as;
Popular vs Unpopular
Cool vs Nerd
Strong vs Weak
Confident vs Nervous
Bold vs Shy
3. Representation of
‘Nerd’
As my character is a typical nerd character I decided to research comedy
films with nerdy characters in them to get an idea of how to portray a nerd to
our audience. I researched Napoleon Dynamite and kind of based my
character off him a little bit, he gave me the idea to have ridiculous hair,
glasses and a funny stance/walk. After seeing his character he helped me
develop my own nerdy character with a few similarities from Napoleon
Dynamite. The typical nerd characters in most films have nerdy glasses that
look like they belong to a grandfather, and weird and humorous walk and
stance and usually stand out from the popular kids.
With this character I tried to contrast it as much as humanly possible to Simeons
character, I did this by walking, talking, standing, moving and interacting with
other people the complete opposite then how Simeon did with his character.
Implementing this nerd with the storyline where he wants a girl who is way out
of his league is a standard comedy film plot however it still keeps audiences
interested as the humour from the characters drive the plot forward.
4. Representation of
‘Cool Guy’
In our movie one of the main characters is Simeons character S.Dout, the
typical ‘coolest guy in school’ character, we decided to have his character be
an arrogant, big-headed guy who thinks the world of himself. This type of
character always goes well with the nerdy character of Charlie, in most
comedy films there's a nerd and a cool guy who at first despise each other
however throughout the movie end up becoming friends and helping each
other out. We decided to follow this from 21 and 22 Jump Street as when the
characters were in school they hated each other however when they found a
common interest ended becoming best friends.
This contrast in characters helps create comedic and humorous scenes for the
audience as they can see two completely opposite personas come together
and work as a team in order to help each other out, this means throughout
they have entirely different views and opinions on almost everything, one is
physical and strong and the other is the smart one but lacks physical prowess.
5. Representation of
Women
In our film opening there is one female character, Verona's character Alice is
the typical good looking female who the nerd character always wants but can
never get, instead she likes the cool guy. This creates tension between all three
characters as they all want different things, nerd wants pretty girl, pretty girl
wants cool guy, cool guy wants different girl. This means everyone in the film is
chasing after something in which it is really unlikely they will achieve. This means
the audience get to choose who they follow and who they want to get the
person that the character is chasing throughout the film.
We also chose to portray the only female role as the eye candy as this makes
for a very different character compared to the two male roles, this creates
three completely different characters for the film which makes for a better
storyline and plot as the characters can all be shown in their own ways.
