chosen to look at the hiring process of the Jacksonville Police Department (JPD) in Onslow County
NC. The Jacksonville Police Department has one hundred and thirty sworn officers, and is

Russell Rumberger, author of the book Dropping Out, suggests that GED recipients do not earn as
much because they are not viewed as being as capable as diploma holders. "If you look at employer

In today's society, companies from all across the country invent standardized tests that claim to
accurately evaluate a student's academic capabilities. When in reality, those infamous corporations
are accomplishing the polar opposite of their own goal. The ACT, SAT, and PARCC exams are just
three of the many assessments that a student experiences during their high school career. These tests
do encompass some topics covered in the classroom, but the way in which they are delivered prove
to not be truthful measures of the knowledge students already obtain. The main reason this topic is
controversial nowadays is because colleges utilize these examinations to account for the student's
abilities. Because they are not complete evaluations of an individual student, standardized tests are
not accurate measures of intelligence, academic skills, or any other traits a student possesses.
Therefore, they should be replaced with an alternative form of assessment.
First off, standardized testing is merely testing memorization in a handful of subjects, limiting a
student's ability to think independently. It is not about how smart one is in a particular subject; it is
about how well a student can memorize the tips and tricks to the test in front of them. In addition,

When I was in high school, I would hang out with my friends and they didn't like to do their school
work so I wouldn't do mine. We would go hang out or sleep in class. I thought that I was cool
because everyone knew who I was and would invite me to parties. I started to fail most of my
classes and get into trouble because of the type of people that I chose to socialize with. I would tell
jokes in class about the teacher and get sent to the office.
When I went to the youth center at age 14 I had to take my schooling a lot more seriously. I was way
behind in my work and my credits were really low for the grade that I was supposed to be in. I was

finish. But because of being a slacker in class, I decided to get my GED and try to do the work

name was Andrew; He was 17 years old, a junior in high school that also played a lineman position
for the football team. His death was tragic; not just to me, but to our entire community. As well as

not to care and eventually I didn't care. Because of my not caring I started failing, and not long after
I quit high school. I worked at a fast food place for a while after quitting school and then I realized, I
was a failure I did not want to work at a fast food place the rest of my life. But I had no high school

Not only does standardized testing limit students from attending the college of their dreams, it also
puts a large amount of stress on students and teachers and the test do not test for necessary skills

Most standardized tests are multiple choice questions with four choices. Personally, I always second
guess myself. I never go with my gut instinct, because there are always two answers that seem
similar. I believe my test scores do not reflect my ability to do anything. I did not do well on my

Standardized testing is used all across the nation in order to measure the knowledge of students. It is
a major argument that these tests do not actually show the true intellectual knowledge of students.
There is a tremendous amount of pressure put on both instructors and students because these tests

What if standardized tests were not used? How could we accurately measure someone's
understanding of a subject? Think, your going into brain surgery and the surgeon is someone just out
of highschool who has never demonstrated their understanding of the job because they have never
taken a standardized test. This is what our world would look like without the useful tool of

The University of Language Services wrote an informational form on the "US licensure
organization". There they listed all the professions that require standardized testing before moving
into the job. The list of jobs included but is not limited to "medicine,nursing, law, dentistry,
teaching, accounting, pharmacy, psychologist, engineering, architecture, electrician, lawler, realtor"
(University of Language Services). The reason they use standardized test is to ensure that the
student knows the basics and understands the profession they are going into. Admittedly not all jobs
require standardized testing they just require experience. Georgetown University did a summary on

projected to be in 2020 require a degree of some kind. So that mean 35% of jobs just require
experience"(Anthony P. Carnevale). Therefore it is possible to get a job without a degree and that
means you don't need to take a standardized test. However the amount of jobs that will be available
for those who just have experiance is shrinking. CNN wrote an article on what percentage of college

million went to those with at least a bachelor's degree, 3.1 million went to those with an associate's

issues. There is no simple cure or single cause of poverty. According to statistics from the U.S.

Dropouts routinely receive no medical or health insurance from these low paying; part–time
employment and these jobs usually have no benefits, such as retirement plans, paid vacations, and
sick leave days. For the most part these are rewards for full–time employees. Another effect of not
having an education is the increasing crime rates. Gangs most prevalent in large cities begin
recruiting these young dropouts. For many of these kids, they are living in single parent households
and the intercity gang populations introduce them to drugs, alcohol, and crime. Unfortunately, many
of these high school dropouts start their criminal careers at a young age. Beginning with minor
