Speech Reflection
1. Speech Reflection
I came into this class thinking that I would hate coming, hate speaking, and even hate learning about
it. I found in my time in this class that I don't hate speaking in front of others as much as I thought I
did. I used to get very anxious and scared to present, I would literally shake and get all sweaty. The
main thing this class taught me was confidence and that no one else wants to get up there anymore
than I do. The first speech I gave was over the benefits of yoga. I was very nervous, but I was also
very well prepared. I think being so well prepared is why I did so good on my first speech. In this
class I learned how to prepare myself for upcoming speeches. When I would read the chapters in the
book, I saw the tactics that were recommended to use when preparing for a speech and used them. I
also learned a lot of terminology of things when reading the book that I did not know before. Before
this class, I had no experience with outlines. I am glad that I did get to do a few outlines throughout
the class because I can use that knowledge of how to make an outline in future speeches I have. I
also learned what to look for when someone else is giving a speech. I learned to pay attention to
how they are speaking, where they are looking, and how they are delivering the speech in general. In
my past experience, with listen to speeches, I just wanted them to hurry up and be over, but it was
interesting to pay attention to the things people do when they give a speech. My

3. The Speech Was A Success
Overall, I believe that our speech was a success. Sonia and I wrote our outline together and we
followed Toulmin logic for our format. We started with the board point that everyone know driving
under the influence is dangerous and then narrowed by adding how many people get multiple DUI
and finally the consequences of driving under the influence. In this way, we had a logical and
persuasive argument that we both understood. We also decided who would speak which parts on
Friday which meant that we both knew what was happening and had time to practice and prepare. I
think that when we were speaking we had smooth transitions between our different parts. However,
because we did not have the opportunity to practice our speech together the ... Show more content

In my call to action, I used words like implore and I asked my audience to consider their safely and
the safety of all the people they care about. I was doing my best to pull them into my topic and make
them consider why it was important and how it affected them before they voted. I told them
specifically what I wanted them to do and why they should do it. I believe that my delivery was
forceful and well–articulated. Lastly, my rebuttal was interactive and lasting. I thought extensively
about what to do for my rebuttal and I guessed that my opposition would bring up that taking away a
person's driver's license would take away their livelihood and I knew I would be able to rebut this
with statistics. However, I also wanted to make a more lasting impression than that. By making
everyone stand up and display my statistic my goal was to make the issue more real to them and
really allow them to see what I was saying. Saying numbers normally make a lasting impression on
people, but showing them that point in a visual form will. I was rather proud of that. I was able to
successfully rebut most of the points that the opposition made. I also felt good about calling the
opposition out on not addressing the pint that we were arguing. They talked about how giving DUIs
does not address the root of the problem, and while

people .In addition Elie wiesel was a holocaust survivor that gave his speech at a concentration
camp with the Ex President obama .
Although both speeches are not that important , I do believe Chief Joseph speech was more effective
in History. He really put lots of effort in the speech .He wanted justice for his people he wanted the
same rights and freedom as any white man .Joseph's speech was a very well written speech.

7. John Alway's Speech
Eighth Grade
There I was sitting in front of about 150–200 people about to give what I thought was the biggest
speech of my life, and at the moment it was. I sat in my seat taking deep breaths in and out, trying to
stop my heart from beating out of my chest as Timothy Roberts name was called. I knew I was up
next and had to give my speech. I awaited the calling of my name sitting there with a 1,000 thoughts
racing through my head, what if I stumble over my words? What if everyone laughs at me? The
principal loudly announced, "Javeon Richards." I hesitantly stood up and slowly walked to the
podium one foot after the other with my armpits sweating profusely. I approached the podium. My
eyes immediately locked in on my brother who was in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
John alway had certain demeanor about himself that everyone always gravitated to, and I was stuck
in his shadow trying to fill his shoes. John was 5'9 had a cocky build, with teeth as bright as a new
day.
John started off the speeches, "Good Evening everyone" from there the rest was smooth sealing. The
words fluently came out of his mouth as if he had practiced it 100 times before. His voice was
utterly clear as you could hear the pronunciation of each letter in each word he said. He made sure
he made eye contact with mostly everyone in the audience, to ensure they felt what he what he what
saying. I was up next.
As I was on my way to the stage, John was on his way to his seat and softly whispered to me "Try
and beat that." I tried to begin giving my speech, but couldn't help but to stare into my brothers
taunting eyes and see his perfect smile as he stared at me, giving me a look like I'll never match up
to what he had done. I managed to look away and stare at the torn poster that was hanging in the
back of the room, however; I still could not get a sentence to come out. I stood there like a deer in
headlight attempting to formulate words and get them to come out of my mouth when I felt my
throat tighten. My mouth locked shut and became excessively dry. I could barely feel my legs, but I
did feel my hands become clammy in my pocket. I began feeling extremely hot as I looked into the
crowd and seen a gazillion eyes all staring at me, a warm trickle of sweat rolled down my face. I ran

9. Reflection Speech
Initially, when I first registered to enroll for this online Speech class, I did not know what to expect.
I thought that we would only meet in order to present the required speeches and then I thought that
we would have a virtual classroom to give speeches were we were all online at once. Now I know
that both of my guesses were wrong. For our speeches, we either record them online and invite
classmates as audience members to watch, or have a live audience of family and/or friends that
record you giving your speech in your living room or somewhere similar. When I found out that
these were the ways I would be giving my speeches, I was so surprised. When I am speaking in front
of a live audience in a classroom, I get so nervous, so I thought that this method of giving
presentations might be less anxious for me.
The first speech was the Most Embarrassing Moment speech. I honestly was still so nervous to
record this even though I would just be looking at my computer screen. It felt kind of weird, almost
as if I was video chatting with myself. After I memorized my speech and sent in my recording, I
immediately assumed that I failed because the professor would think that I was too close to the
screen or I was too loud or I moved my head around a lot. Then I ended up getting an A on it.
Everything I thought that I did wrong was either irrelevant or did not distract from my presentation
as a whole. Since I only missed one point, I can say that what I did well was all the

Speech of Information and Diversity
Christina Montgomery 2/22/2017
I. Introduction:
A. Attention Getter: "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the
world." –Nelson Mandela
B. Thesis: I am going to inform you about some of the differences in the Chinese and American
education systems.
C. Preview: Some of the important aspects we will look at today are what a typical school day looks
like, standardized testing, and how the government plays a role in the education system.
II. Body of Speech:
A. First Main Point: First, we will discuss what a typical school day looks like.
1. In America, a typical school day lasts approximately from 8 am to 3 pm.
a. Students will take classes such as math, science, history, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In China, students must take a test called "Gaokao."
a. "The nine–hour test is offered just once a year and is the sole determinant for admission to
virtually all Chinese colleges and universities" (Hayes, 2008, para.1).
b. This is the test that students spend all of their free time studying for.
c. Quoted in an online article, "According to People's Daily Online, an estimated 40% of students do
not make it into any university at all, much less a prestigious school, because their test scores are too
low" (n.d., para. 8).
C. Third Main Point: Lastly, we will discuss how the government plays a role in the education
system.
1. In America, federal, state, and local governments play a large role in the education system.
12. a. According to The Center for Public Justice Website, "When Congress passes a federal budget each
year, it sets aside enough money to fund about ten percent of government–run schools' operating
costs" (n.d., para. 5).
b. The primary focus of the state government is to set the laws and regulations for what the schools
must up hold such as the standards for what students must learn.

14. Essay On Speech Class
After presenting my impact speech, I felt a little disappointed with how it went compared to the way
I'd been practicing it. I felt that my thesis, writing having an impact on people, was very clear. But,
the way that I got there was not. In this speech, I could have done a better job at making all my
content relate back to the thesis. When I write the rest of the speeches for this class, I need to keep
my thesis in mind for me to improve the effectiveness. I believe I had an effective introduction
because I captured the audience's attention as well as informed what I would be talking about. I
loved asking a question to begin with and getting the audience participating and engaged from the
start. I knew going into the speech that my ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because I already do this, it is going to be the hardest habit to brake. Before and during my speech, I
must remind myself to keep my feet planted when I stand. I need to evenly disperse my weight
50/50 on my feet to eliminate my natural lean. One of my least favorite things when watching
speeches is when people simply stare at their notecards. Although I am not a terrible culprit of this
habit, it is still one that I want to brake. When I practiced at home I often did not use my notecard
and was easily able to get through it. Yet, when it came time to deliver my speech I kept looking at it
like I needed it. In the future I want to set my notecard down and only pick it up when I need it, it is
not something I want to keep in my hand throughout the speech. I felt that the voice projection I
used thought my speech was very fit, using my diaphragm to produce a louder deeper sound helps
immensely. I naturally talk with my hands which helps me do it in my speeches, but I feel that I can
improve even more. Using more relevant hand gestures would enhance the clarity of my speech, as
well aiding me in looking professional and distinguished while speaking. One of my internal issues
while speaking is getting distracted. When I saw the time giver hold up the signs I would start
thinking about the time and completely lose my place in my speech. The only way I can think to
avoid this problem, is making sure I know my speech forwards, backwards, and every other way, so

I have never been the best at public speaking, especially in a classroom. The addition of knowing
that my overall grade depends on those speeches makes me even more anxious. Even though I have
been forced to do it for many years now with presentations and speeches, I have always felt that
way. I speak at public events here and there, and yes I am nervous at first, but it goes away and then
I'm pretty comfortable. Being in this speech class has helped me quite a bit, but I still have areas I
need to improve on. I, as in myself, my classmates, and my instructor has seen these mistakes and it
is my responsibility to receive and use this knowledge. I am writing this essay based on the helpful
criticism I received, and how I plan to use it. During my speeches I can sometimes see, or feel,
errors I make, even if I have plenty of practice beforehand. Before the speech I am pretty nervous,
some some more than others. In order to help relieve that stress I practice the speech several times. I
will stand in my room and use the desk behind me as the desk in the classroom. I stare out at my
walls and imagine myself in the classroom, looking at my classmates. I first go over my speech in
sections and then add them all together. Overall I end up going over the speech around 6–7 times. I
try to get my movements and gestures right, but regardless of how I practice these, they really don't
stick, as the overall stress of actually standing in front of the class overtakes me. I would have to

Consequently, this speech is probably not what you would expect; and I'm sure half my class would
be much more comfortable standing here in front of you I only want to make two points, and I'm

20. My Demonstration Speech
My Demonstration speech was about how to create innovated flowers out of duct tape. The general
purpose of the speech was to inform the audience. The specific purpose was to inform the audience
so that they would be able to create three different petals out of duct tape, along with leaves. I was
overall organized and prepared for this speech. I had a pink basket which contained all the materials
I needed. The basket includes 7 rolls of duct tape, scissors, ruler, pencils, pens, straws, and markers.
I also had several examples of different types of flowers. I had two types of roses, and then a tulip
example. I also had each flower in different colors. I thought that the examples would provide me
with credibility to my audience. I learned that credibility is one of the most important things a
speaker can have. A credible speaker is one whom an audience perceives to be competent,
knowledgeable, dynamic and trustworthy (Beebe, 51). I started the speech with a brief introduction,
of what I was going to demonstration, and then moved on to tell everyone how they could
personally make duct tape flowers. I knew that my subject matter would be difficult for people in
the back to see, so I draw illustrations on the board. My goal was to let the entire audience have a
visual, so that they would have some idea of what I was talking ... Show more content on

I could tell that my audience was getting bored, I think Hannah even fell asleep. I tried to get the
audience's attention by tell a joke, about how my hair was tangled up in the duct tape. Most people

to analyzing your audience and then adjust to the audience's non–verbal cues during the speech

An intriguing speech event that I take part of in my daily life is at the place of my work; a restaurant
in Old Town. Under the employ in the service industry, it's a common knowledge among co–
workers that speech patterns change when interacting with a customer. It becomes a running joke
between co–workers, mimicking the heightened, sociable pitches and over friendly choices of
words. As a waitress in a typical restaurant setting, the content of this unofficial speech event are the
repeated cycles of satisfactory waiting; tone of voice, particular utterances, bodily positions we take

Well, the persuasive speech did not go the best for me. I was extremely nervous and I could not snap
out of it; which I'm sure was obvious in the video. On the bright side, though, my catch phrase made
it easier to grab the attention of my audience! It also helped that my persuasive speech outline had
good flow. My persuasive speech contained a lot of resourceful information that I hope made people
actually think about becoming an organ donor. I made sure to include multiple statistics so that my
audience would know how many people are actually awaiting organ and tissue donation. Providing
this information in my speech was resourceful to my audience as well as myself because organ and
tissue donation is not generally a topic that people think a lot about and therefore they might not

my mind kept freezing up on me, so, therefore, I was referring to my note cards more than I needed

I was referring to my note cards more, my eye contact was lacking. My eye contact was the one
thing in my speech that needed the most improvement. Also, my nonverbal communication was
good in the fact that I did not move my hands around a lot, but did have quite a few nervous
twitches. The nonverbal that were displayed in this persuasive speech were better than the other two

26. Informative Speech
Informative speeches are delivered in order to convey and communication knowledge, information,
or insight regarding an issue. Similarly, it could be used to describe a person, place, or procedure.
All in all, it is used in order to help the audience build an understanding of something. This does not
entail the speaker to try to persuade individuals of this but, better yet, inform them. When delivering
informative speeches, there are three vital characteristics that allow the speaker to reinforce their
point and the audience to obtain the information more clearly. These characteristics include:
effective openings, notable transitions, and some other device that captivates the imagination and
attention of the audience. Allena, Meaghan, Meghan, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

not expect the speech to be very captivating because I didn't really see much to the mechanics of

a picture of the inside of the bowling ball. This made me more receptive to the overall presentation.
Furthermore, his approach kinesthetic approach and lack of a script were also tremendously unique.
I believe that the fact that he is a member of the bowling team and he could so smoothly deliver that
speech gave him much credibility. This is a very crucial element when giving an informative speech
because it shows you are knowledgeable about the subject and know what you are talking about.

Growing up I was always very timid and shy and I'm still like that today but n a lesser degree.
Literacy is a journey for everyone and it was slightly difficult for me to pinpoint one specific event
until I really thought about it. I learned from speak how to pronounce things properly and it helped
me express myself appropriately. To begin, my literacy path, I was held back by my mom in
kindergarten because I would never let people help me with my homework. I was always quite, I
remember vividly that they would one of my family members would put the work that I had for
kindergarten infant of me at the table where I used to and still do my homework and I would just be
looking down at my hands while playing with my tiny fingers. They would be asking me questions
about my work but I would just block out their voice until it was late and they let me get up to go
shower to go to bed and that repeated several times. Until the next year when they held me back I
guess a switch seemed to turn on and actually let people help me, I think it was also because in my
first first grade class I don't remember having any friends but in my second one I remember having
several and even a crush. My first day in speech I don't remember that well but I do remember who

30. Reflection Of Robert's Speech
Speaking Recognition Final Essay The most effective overall speaker in my opinion would have to
be Robert. The way he acts on stage feels like he knows where he's at and runs it. His speech
regarding the "No Smoking Policy" was outstanding in such a way it was well spoken. In my
opinion why he deserves to win the most effective overall speaker would have to be because of his
charisma, preparation, confidence, and attitude on stage. His charisma was amazing. He was always
happy and willing to make something funny out of serious embarrassing moments for example when
he gave the speech about dating two people at once others can view that as inappropriate. He was
willing to go up on stage and make it funny which grabs the audience's attention. Also he has a
smile on which brings an happy attitude. This allows him not to speak with a monotone voice which
would make the presentation boring. His confidence on stage was the thing that allowed him to be,
in my opinion, the most effective overall speaker. He always stood up straight, didn't use much filler
words and new what he was talking about. His preparation was one of the key aspects why he was
so confident. You could tell he was super prepared for all of his speeches which allowed him to talk
in a clear voice and add funny comments within them. The speech regarding the dating two people
at once was my favorite because it was a random but interesting topic to present a speech on. His

34. Reflection Of A Speech At The Middles Of Speech
When I was waiting to perform at my first speech competition I realized that I couldn't breath. It was
as if all the air in the room had been sucked out. I felt like I had entered an empty, soundless
vacuum, almost as if I had been sucked into space. I half expected myself to become weightless and
float around the room, but this didn't happen. Instead of this, I stood frozen in the middle of a
classroom in front of a dozen other people. I was the center of attention, and I hated every second of
it. I was debating whether or not I should just turn around and sprint out the door, but before I could
make a decision the lady in the front desk smiled at me and said something along the lines of "ready
whenever you are". The moment she said this two things crossed my mind: the first one being "I'm
fucked," and the second being "how did I end up here?" Unfortunately I didn't have time to answer
that question because at that moment I had to do the hardest thing in front of my life: performing
and speaking in front of others.
When I entered that classroom I knew that I was going to end up having a nervous breakdown in the
middle of my performance, but I didn't expect the tears. I reached a point in my speech where I just
suddenly stopped talking. I couldn't take the panic and fear anymore, so tears started to fall. This

36. Speech Reflection
I have never really been a fan of giving a speech or presentation in front of people. But I think I got
a little more comfortable talking in front of people as the semester went on. During this semester I
see that some people talk really quiet, or fidget with their hands or clothes. When we first started
giving speeches I talked a little fast so I did not reach the time limit that I needed to. My major right
now is criminal justice, but I have not fully decided on that yet. I took this class mostly because it is
a requirement. But also I took it to enhance my communication skill, and I feel that I have somewhat
accomplished that. I am not a hundred percent confident in giving a speech to a random group of
people. However, this class helped to build my confidence. The three improvements that I would
have to say that I have achieved is not having shaky hands when giving speech. Another one is
being able to slow down so I can hit the time slots during a presentation. The last improvement that I
have to say is been able to keep eye contact with the audience the entire time I am presenting.
Having shaky hands and keeping eye contact is the same goals I had with the CIP paper. The only
one that is different is speaking to fast, and I feel that I have improved on that. One of the major
improvements that I have seen myself doing is not having shaky hands while giving a speech. What
I think has helped me a lot with this, is being able think about giving a speech and doing some
relaxing techniques. So that way when I am actually giving a speech, I am still relaxed. Even when
we had to do other speeches in classes, making sure that my hands were not shaking and staying
relaxed and just practicing giving more speeches has helped me a lot so my hands would stop
shaking. But I think just talking in front of people helped me, even when not giving a formal speech.
Just talking to a group of people helped build my confidence to be able to stay calm. Another
improvement that I have noticed from myself is that I have been or trying to keep eye contact with
the audience while speaking. Something that has helped me is to learn to not look directly in their
eyes when I am speaking. It helps if I look at their forehead or right

Audience Analysis Paper When it comes to writing and presenting a speech, the audience is a big
factor to account for. Who are you speaking to? How do you grab their attention? Where, when, and
why are you speaking to these people? There are a lot of things to consider when there is a
presentation to be given. When analyzing an audience, there is a process in which to go about doing
so. First, identify the characteristics of your audience, whether demographic or situational, then ask
yourself what techniques can help you meet the audience characteristics, and finally what are some
potential problems that could go along with your analysis. By analyzing your audience, ... Show

and my eye contact. In my informative speech one of my strengths is my transitions between main
points in the speech. In my speech they connected each main thought together. I also believe that my
transitions linked all the thoughts together to form a time line. Another strength I have in my
informative speech is my opening line. I believe my opening line made an impact on my audience. I

My first weakness is my confidence in my speech. I need to have more confidence in what I am
speaking to my audience, I know a whole lot about Charles Darwin but yet in my speech I did not
come across as if I was sure about myself. I will need to work on this for my audience to know I am
confidant in my speech.
My second weakness is the use of the floor when giving my speech. I did not move around like I
should have. I need to make sure to move more when giving my speech. Having an isle made me
feel like I had to stay right in the center of the isle and not move. I know now the next time I am
giving a speech to move the chairs a different way.
The rate in which I was talking in my informative speech is another weakness. I think I had too
much information to speak to my audience about but I did not have enough time. In result I had to
have a fast rate to get all my information in about Charles Darwin. I have learned not to put as much
detail in the outline so in return I can slow down when speaking to my

My informative speech was on Jazz. The main topics I discussed in my presentation were the history
of Jazz, the "Jazz Age", and about Louis Armstrong. To begin this evaluation, I did poorly on this
speech because I had my set of index card that had a lot of information, but instead of taking those
index cards, I took one with less information and that's what made me nervous during my
presentation. I Think I need to make improvements on my posture, timing, and project my voice for
everyone could be able to hear me. The reason I wrote these three things for improvement because I
felt I was slouching and not projecting my voice as much. While practicing my speech at home, I
timed myself; however, every time I would time myself it would take

46. Conventions Of An Informative Speech
Even though this was our class' first speech, not only did everyone bring exciting topics to discuss,
but we were also able to effectively use the conventions of an informative speech. Not everything
was perfect yet, as there are still some tweaks or improvements that can be made as we strive to
better our public speaking skills. Taking a look at the speeches by Mariapia, Elizabeth, and Ashley I
will evaluate their speeches for effective openings, notable transitions, and other achievements in
their organization or delivery. In doing so, I will assess the success and potential shortcomings of
each speaker in their informative speech, before reflecting on my own speech, in order for the
speakers and myself to reflect on our public speaking skills ... Show more content on

For Mariapia, she effectively used a personal anecdote for her whole speech which made sense
because she was basically trying to prove to the audience that Columbia is an exciting and beautiful
place to visit. In Elizabeth's case she described how a food critic tastes food and then gives the
audience their own chance to be a food taster which makes the speech much more memorable to the
audience. Lastly, Ashley emphasized the need to find the cure for cancer by using a witty analogy of
a tree with roots that are bad to talk about the causes of cancer. I honestly felt that these were three
of the better informative speeches because of these aspects and techniques the speakers used.
Personally, I felt prepared for the speech and I was definitely comfortable and ready to perform, but
I think that I could have practiced my speech in front of a small audience maybe one more time to
get a better feeling of what it would be like on presentation day. On the other hand, the small
PowerPoint I used in conjunction with my speech was effective at helping the audience digest some
of the denser material such as batting statistics. My goal was to give an 'A' level speech by following

48. 'Speech Is Power Of Speech In Messenger, Audience'
Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote "Speech is power: Speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel."
Speech can be categorized into two main categories. There is public speaking and effective
speaking. The two are supposed to go hand in hand but it requires practice and knowledge. Public
speaking is any form of communicating in front of a group of people. Effective speaking on the
other hand is public speaking, but with a meaning or lasting impact that truly grabs the audience's
attention.
In "Messenger, Messenger, Audience" Daniel Rose evaluates and criticizes professional speeches.
He begins by stating that the first step to having a great speech is the format that is used. "A strong

His first few sentences seemed slightly broken instead of fluent indicating his nerves. However, he
then continued by telling a joke about his background and a quote in order to intrigue the audience
and set the mood of his speech. Following the introduction, he began by stating what the topic was
that he was going to discuss and then explaining a true event that happened in his life. He kept the
story brief and continued by explaining how his story related back to the topic. While telling the
story Steve Jobs chose his words very meticulously. Each word helped create the tone of his speech
which was serious and heart felt. He continued the same format for his next two points. Jobs also
ended his speech in a similar way that he introduced the speech by ending with a quote. The quote
by Jobs "stay hungry, stay foolish" was explained and then repeated 2 times with increasing volume
to conclude the speech. This technique of repeating a certain phrase was used to end the speech on a
powerful note and engrave the message into the college graduates brains. This is an effective public
speaking technique because in order to be effective you must leave a lasting impression on your
audience and that is exactly what Jobs did by continuously repeating the

50. The Importance Of A Speech On The Audience
When making a speech, it is important that the speaker understands who their audience is. By
understanding the characteristics of their listeners, the speaker is able to tailor their speech so that it
involves topics that interest the audience. The listeners will then be more attentive and interest in
listening to the message. In this Communication class, my classmates are my audience because they
are the ones who will be listening and giving me feedback. In order to make effective speeches,
there are specific characteristics that I must take into consideration to make sure that I modify my
speeches according to their values and interests so that they will listen attentively.
Knowing the demographics of my audience beforehand can really help me prepare for the message
of my speech. Therefore, a characteristic of my listeners is that they are all young adults between the
ages of seventeen and twenty–one. In order to appeal to this age group, I must make sure that the
topic that I choose to present must be something that this age group values so that they 'll show
interest. Also, I must make sure any references or words I use must be something that they all can
understand or relate to. If I am using a reference or word that they do not understand, I have to make
sure that I include enough explanation or content for them to understand. By providing sufficient
amount of explanation or examples, my listeners will not be lost or confused.
Another characteristic of my audience

52. Speech On Speech And The Freedom Of Speech
COMMUNICATION IS a fundamental human requirement and is the underpinning of all human
dealings since it is the mode through which humans exchange information. The free exchange of
ideas and knowledge take place when there is unrestricted full–fledged communication. It is
guaranteed through the "freedom of speech and expression", the most cherished fundamental right,
as envisaged under various international covenants and most of the constitutions including the
Indian Constitution. The right to freedom of expression has a wide ambit which includes the
freedom to hold opinions, freedom to impart information, the freedom to receive information and
even the freedom to dissent against the democratically elected governments of the day. It is also
related to free thinking, imagination and deliberation which are prerequisites for a human being's
self–realisation. Moreover, it is a vital right to form a good democratic government where citizens
are well informed about political happenings. Speech, according to many scholars, serves a self–
fulfilment function. This theory explains that satisfaction that arises out of speech is related to the
individual's ability to think, visualise, and generate ideas. Many thinkers placed the right to free
speech and expression at a higher pedestal. To Joseph Raz, communication – oral, pictorial, or
musical communication of speech – is an essential right involving people to contribute in civic
activities. Professor Edwin C Baker stated that speech

purposes including medical and cosmetic issues.
Describe your level of comfort and confidence during the speech. Compare how you felt with how

I used several sources and I made sure to verbally cite these sources during my presentation.
How well did you incorporate logos, ethos, and pathos into your persuasive speech?
I thought I did a good job utilizing logos, ethos, and pathos into my speech. I used ethos by stating
my credentials as a certified nurse injector. I used pathos by going into detail and emotion by
describing how some patients suffer from medical issues such as over active bladder. I explained
that overactive bladder can cause depression in many because they become embarrassed to be in
public. I used Logos by stating facts about the product from reliable sources on the web.

This speech was the persuasion speech, and I chose to persuade about drug testing in the Minnesota
State High School League. I came into the speech confident and excited on May 10th to present my
points of: the problem, a solution, and a problem–solving plan. I may have been slightly nervous
prior to the speech day, but when the time came and I was introduced I felt more prepared than ever.

To accomplish these goals I practiced slowing down and I kept telling my self not to rush, I
practiced hand movements at home, and I talked more fluent in practice to keep myself going. In
this critique I will cover the positive aspects of my speech and the things I did well, and I will also
go over the weak areas I can still improve on for my next speech. I am very proud that I was able to
show my strengths in my last speech. First, I believe that I cited my supporting sources correctly,
because I included the author, date, and title each time. My speech's structure was over all easy to
follow with my problem need steps, visualization of my policy's rules, and the action plan. It was
fairly easy to give my arguments with confidence, because I made sure to make direct contact with
people, such as when I was starting with a hypothetical story, I targeted one or two people. I had a
good dynamic delivery throughout my speech, and I was able to talk more serious during the real
life situations that are affecting each student in the classroom to show my emotional stance. Lastly,
even though it was my best speech so far this quarter, I still have room for improvement in many
areas. I

61. Public Speaking Speech
Today, we will be speaking about my personal goals when it comes to public speaking and what I
hope to gain from the course I am taking at John Jay College through Borough of Manhattan
Community College. Personally, I believe to set a goal for myself can be very open–ended, with the
various outcomes there are when learning to communicate fluidly as well as speak in public.
Depending on the size of the crowd or the content of my particular speech and my goal at the end of
each speech. To encompass all of my personal goals, it would be easiest to say that I would like to
have a better grasp of communication in general and to be able to express my personal thoughts and
ideas in a way that is crystal clear to the receiving party. These may seem like small things to many,
but for someone like myself who often struggles with getting my point across in a succinct way it is
rather important.
When it comes to public speaking, the goal above all would definitely be getting over my anxiety
and stage fright when it comes to public speaking. If we are being completely honest, these negative
feelings about giving a speech come from the possibility of having a less than desirable reaction to
what you're expressing, correct? More often than not, I find myself thinking of ways to not think
about the crowd. Many performers have had to overcome stage fright and I wanted to research just

63. Speech Reflection Essay
During speech class this semester, I gave several different types of speeches on several different
topics. During this semester, my ability to give speeches in front of an audience has improved quite
a bit, I hope. Going into the semester, I had a really hard time giving speeches to people, but now
that speech is almost over I feel like I am more capable of doing so. I think the thing I did best
during the semester was getting good information for each of my speeches. My favorite assignment
was most likely the impromptu speech. I really liked that one because we did not have to prepare an
outline or anything like that, we just got to go up there and speak. During this semester, I learned a
lot about how to give speeches such as the proper way to stand so I do not rock, or how to use my
hands to emphasize my points. In the future, I think that I will be able to control my speed better
during my speeches which will help the people I am presenting to understand my message. I think
the skills I have acquired during speech will help me for the rest of my life. No matter what career I
choose, I am sure that at some point I will have to present to someone about something. The skills I
learned in speech will also help me just communicate with people in a one on one situation easier
than I do now. I can use these skills throughout the rest of high school and through my six years of
college still to come because whenever I have to present a project I will know how to effectively
communicate my message to my audience.
Based off of all of my reflection sheets, video evaluations, and peer critiques I have improved over
the course of the semester. At the beginning of the semester I had a problem with speed and using to
many "filler" words. As the year progressed, my speed became more and more controllable and I
used less and less filler words. After my most recent speech, I'm still not quite at the level I want to
be at, but I am far better than I was at the very beginning. I think just speaking in front of people
more than I am used to doing has helped me develop better speaking skills and grow in my ability to
effectively communicate with others. Throughout the semester I learned a lot about speaking,
performing, and

65. Evaluation Of Persuasive Speech
Self Evaluation My persuasive speech was about how people should stop smoking. I started off with
a visualization and participation of the audience. I told them to take a deep breath away from the
smoker and then take a deep breath near the smoker to realize the difference. I had told them why I
was a creditable source and what my proposition was to subject. I believe my introduction for the
speech was catchy and unique. I then told the audience what I was going to talk about, which was
about what happens to a smokers' body, secondhand smoke, and what the benefits are to stopping
smoking. For my self, I noticed my improvement over my speeches through time. I see that I have
done much better about staying in one place instead of crossing my legs over each other, like I am
trying to trip myself. I know for a speech you need to have good eye contact, stand tall while having
useful hand gestures. On top of that, a speaker must speak loud and clear so the audience in the front
and back can hear. I believe I did a good amount of all these requirements. ... Show more content on

What did I do to prepare my informative speech? I spent a lot more time on this speech than my last
one. I practice maybe like 5 times because I wanted to know that what I had written down was the

like and I really wanted to inform my peers about a part of my life. How did I feel when I was up in
front of my peers? I felt fine, a lot better than my last speech, I think it was because I practiced
more, and going up there it doesn't matter if people are or aren't interested in what you are talking

well on that, I used to never want to look up because speeches scared me, but now I'm fine and can

69. A Reflection Of Speech
Now that day two speakers have finished their speeches, I have considered the feedback given about
my speech and compared it to other speakers in the class. I reviewed in my head what I did wrong
and went back in my mind to remember those speakers who I believed did better than me in the
categories I scored low in. We learn from each other's strengths as well as our mistakes.
Accordingly, chapter ten focuses on the beginning and ending a speech. An effective introduction
gets the speaker off on the right foot. The "right foot" means that the speaker has accomplished the
goal of a great hook to attract the audience's attention. A speaker's introduction is a way to make the
audience feel intrigued and want to continue listening so that he or she will feel as though what is
about to be said is to benefit them. An effective conclusion ends the speech on a strong note. The
"strong note" is the speaker going back to review what was previously said so that the audience can
remember that information and use it somehow in a way that the speaker intended it to be used.
During my speech, I felt that greeting my peers and informing them on what I will be speaking
about, which was introducing my partner, would be a great start for my audience to be awake and to
feel included on what they will be putting their attention on. Out of the eight methods in the first

Finally choose the specific purpose and central idea. These two help the speaker stay on topic while
giving the audience the objective for the speech. Now that the speaker has figured out what type of
speech they want to present they can create a working outline. The outline should take a few
minutes to construct. This will guide the speaker research. Now the working outline is only a rough
outline. In this outline the speaker might use question for the main points and later use sentences for
the preparation outline. After the working outline is complete the speaker is ready to conduct
research. When researching the speaker wants to find material the will make the audience want to
listen and learn. The speaker should select material that have a language level appropriate,
something that will interest the audience, and if the topic is complex make sure to find multiple
perspectives and means because everyone learns differently. The speaker should use the internet,
library, newspapers, magazines, and personal knowledge in order to create their speech. Now that
the speaker knows the topic it is time for them to construct the informative outline. This outline is
structured and includes complete sentences and will typically end with a source page. When making

73. Speaking As A Reflective Speech
In the past, I have given speeches, but never in the style of how we did it in this class. Previous
speeches I have given have been read aloud directly from a paper I had written. I have never given a
speech that required memorization or speaking based off of a key–word outline, so this experience
was very new to me. Audio only: Thought I had a strong introduction, and introduced what I would
be focusing on in my essay. I believe I sound fairly confident and seem to be speaking at a pace that
is clear to understand and enunciated each syllable. As the speech progresses, it seems as if I've lost
some confidence, I use more filler words, and repeat myself a little bit. My ending was very weak,
and it is something I realized as soon as I said it. My plan was to do a formal conclusion, thanking
the audience, but I became nervous and said: "and yes". Video only: I use my hands as I am
speaking. I appear to be fairly confident based on my overall posture and mouth movements. I
frequently look down at the paper towards the beginning but still try and acknowledge the audience
as well. My lips appear moving at a constant speed, showing that I do not speed up at certain points.
My hands appear to shake a bit when I pick up the paper to read my quote, but I quickly place it

I begin to lightly tap the table further showing that I was nervous and at a loss of words. Video and

75. Reflection On IDEA Speech
Here comes the end of this semester, and I really want to reflect on my overall performance through
this course and set goals for future. In the past three months, I feel like I have accomplished a lot not
only as a student but also as a speaker. From all the speeches I did this semester including Grab Bag
Speech, My Path Interview, Career Path Presentation, Rhetorical Analysis Activity, Pitch Speech,
Story Podcasts, and two impromptu speeches, I learned a lot of speaking skills and showed a big
progress. In addition, Professor Khalil taught me a very important thing which is knowing people
well, which allows me to be more confident and relaxed while doing a speech. I think I improved a
lot from the beginning to the end, and I am pleased with my overall delivery in the IDEA Speech.
However, there is still more space for me to improve, so I am going to do a self–critique based on
my performance not only in the IDEA Speech but also throughout the course. First of all, I would
like to analyze my results from the PRCA survey. My overall score is 46, which represents a low
communication apprehension. Compared to the result of my first survey which was 56, I thought I
improved a lot. My anxiety and nervous reduced a lot in the IDEA Speech, and I felt very
confidence while speaking. I think these improvements show that I prepared well, know my

79. Speech Reflection Paper
Giving speeches is something I have enjoyed for several years now. Getting up in front of a class is
difficult sometimes, but I always try to put my best foot forward when giving a speech. This year in
Fundamentals of Oral Communication, I feel that I was able to grow even more as a speaker and
presenter. After reading all of my evaluations and rewatching my speech, I now am more aware of
what I can still improve upon and what I improved on just in the last couple years. Something that is
very important to me is getting my point across clearly and concisely. I try to do this by developing
and supporting my argument or my topic. Both of the topics that I chose this year in class are
something that I am very passionate about. Due to this, I felt I put in lots of research and practice to
make sure my audience would understand my message. My first topic was sailing, which is a sport I
have participated in for approximately seven years now, so I wanted to put in the effort so my
audience could get a better grasp at what the sport is. My persuasive topic was why humans should
not be afraid of sharks; this is another topic that I feel very passionate about. I did lots of research
because I really wanted my audience to absorb everything I was saying, as well as take action for
such an important issue. Organization is a key component to creating an effective speech and I feel
that organizing a speech properly is one of my strong suits. Forming an outline and rearranging it
until it all goes together smoothly is one thing I believe I am very good at. I try to organize speeches
in a manner so that it builds, one layer on top of another. The organization of my speeches is what
makes them easier to understand, even if I mess up in other areas. For example, when I organize a
speech I try to start out with my opener, then my closing statement, followed by my transitions in
the speech; by doing this I create the skeleton of my speech. Then I can continue by moving things
around till it flows correctly, adding in the core parts of the speech, and finishing up with the
previews and signposts. Opening is another thing that I believe is one of my strengths as well as
giving an internal preview throughout the speech.
