Diving Bell And The Butterfly Symbolism
Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a movie about a man with a nickname of Jean–Do. Jean–Do was a
writer, and had a stroke that put an end to his ability to walk and do some physical things.
Something that was really great about the film was in the beginning of the movie when Jean–Do
first awakes from his coma. In the beginning of the film when Jean opens his eye the camera is in a
third person point of view. The camera is in Jean's point of view for majority of the film. The movie
does a really good job with giving it from the main actor's point of view, and giving an exact
representation of what Jean is seeing. When Jean opens his eye the camera is blurred up just like as
if he has just awaken from a long nap. From the shot of the camera it

The Importance Of Fairytales
"Reading fairytales for a better growth to our youngest ones"
A mother, an older sibling, an auntie, an uncle, a father, which one are you? Having a youngest one
in your family also carries with eminent responsibility behind it. You might find yourself in a
situation where you want them to grow up in a healthy environment. A healthy environment consists
on a free–of–violence mind. Children will most likely try to mimic or imitate what they observe, and
it's important to taught them the good rather than violent acts we see on TV, movies, and fairytales.
Although these characteristics aren't at a hundred percent responsibility on fairytales since a lot of
these values are thought from parents, most of the time children relies on the things they watch or
read, and for how less it seems it can make an impact on them. There's also multiple variants of this
magical story, however Charles Perrault's author of the French version of Cinderella offers a free–
of–violence narrative perfect for children and families to read together.
Firstly, Perrault's version is not only the best suitable for our youngest ones to read, but a very
entertaining one. Perrault's version it's violence free, but it keeps the magic of the story into
consistency. At a very young age, children will most likely try to mimic or imitate characteristics
they see on the people that surrounds them, shows they watch, and stories they're told. A Cinderella
story is not the exception for this. Any type of violence, for

Johnny Appleseed Research Paper
A non historical or unverifiable story handed down by tradition from earlier times and popularly are
accepted as historical can be called a legend. History past down by the oral tradition telling of
previous events. Legends are a way to explain the unexplained that can not see touched, smelled, or
tasted. In some cultures such as the Navajo or Intuits, traditions and past history of thier culture are
passed down by story telling. History is written or rewritten by the winners. However, things can get
warped if told, retold without a strong concern by the wrong people. There are many different
variations of the same story. Like Cinderella, there are a lot of variations of Cinderella. Some
legends are uncomfortably gory and greusome . Others have the Disney twist and are very kid

The Little Glass Slipper By Charles Perrault
Fairy–tales such as "The Little Glass Slipper" by Charles Perrault, "The Girl with No Hands" by the
Grimm Brother and the Disney Movie "Cinderella" all successfully convey important and
educational messages to their young reads. Many children are exposed to fairy–tale at a young age,
and for these children fairy–tales play an important role in the development of their personal morals
and values. "The Little Glass Slipper" and "Cinderella" both focus on a young girl who is mistreated
by her step–mother and step–sisters and is later rescued by a prince, "The Girl with No Hands" is
also about a young girl who is tormented by the devil and gets her hands cut off. A consistent
message that is presented to children through these fairy–tales, both old and modern, is to never lose
hope no matter how horrible the situation as good will always prevail and evil will perish
"The Little Glass Slipper" by Perrault is old tale which features a girl by the name of Cinderella who
is in an abusive home where she is neglected and verbally abused by both her stepmother and
stepsisters. From riches to rags, Cinderella is forced to become a slave in her own home while at the
same time having to deal with losing her father to her stepmother. Even though Cinderella is treated
horribly, she never loses hope and keeps a good attitude, going as far as to even help her malicious
stepsisters while they prepared for the ball. The two stepsister always "consulted Cinderella...for he

Comparing James Lapine's Into The Woods And Stephen Sondheim
We watched Into the Woods by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim. Honestly, when you said we
were going to watch a musical I thought, oh cool it's going to be like "Phantom of the Opera", or
"High School Musical", but it wasn't like that at all. The costumes were pretty cool and the special
effects were really awesome. I thought it was going to be really boring and dry, but there were some
funny parts. I love the way Sondheim tied the sarcasm in with the release of tension and lesions.
James Lapine wrote the book for Into the Woods he is an American stage director, filmmaker,
playwright, screenwriter, and librettist. He graduated from Franklin and Marshal College and did a
graduate study at the California Institute of the Arts. He has won many Tony Awards, and Drama

twist and most of the play is sung where if it's a straight play it's talking. There wouldn't have been
any of the big show stopper numbers like at the end of each scene. When the witch died was a big
show stopper, and when the backer talked to his died dad. When the baker's wife sung about her
affair with Cinderella's prince it would have been a soliloquy, as well as, the songs called agony one

Types Of Occupations Within The Workplace Essay
Often in the world there are jobs that come across as rather boring or tedious to complete day in and
day out. However, it is a must to keep these jobs as they allow us to provide basic needs for
ourselves in life. Some types of occupations consist of a specialised job, with this, the five core job
characteristics derived from the job characteristics model also apply to these jobs. Furthermore, the
five job features are known to be skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy and
feedback, each having their own importance. By identifying the characteristics, three redesigning
techniques can be implemented being establishing client relationships which are, combining tasks,
establishing client relationships and vertically loading the job. The specialised job holds the job
characteristics and can be redesigned as well to improve on some of those five task features.
Mortgage brokers are known to have very demanding jobs with having to settle deals involving
different types of investment properties, providing home loan services and organise large amounts of
documents. However, a mortgage broker may take upon a business intern or administrator which is a
specialised job, these individuals look after their documents and organise all their client files. A
specialised job can be further defined as 'a job composed of a small part of a larger task or process'
(Williams & McWilliams 2014, p. 156). A business intern seems like a fancy name, but a primary
job for them would

The Film The Princess Bride
The film The Princess Bride can be associated with many different genres. The story expresses
many different genre elements, such as romance, action, and a comedy. Even though the movie
shows all of these characteristics, I believe the movie should be mainly characterized as a fairytale.
The film shares many characteristics with fairytale and fantasy movies, which I will list and discuss.
I will be taking a closer look at the movie, and show how it compares to other fantasy and fairytale
movies.
One of the most obvious example of the movie being the fairy tale, is the involvement of royalty in
the story. One of the main characters in the story, is Buttercup, who is a princess. Buttercup is a
princess all the way through the film, and almost becomes a queen. Another main character is Prince
Humperdinck, who is the prince of florin, the son of the king. Prince Humperdinck and Buttercup
are stereotypical fairy tale characters. Humperdinck is the main antagonist of the story, ... Show

The main way magic is invoked is with Miracle Max, who used to work for the King. When
presented with the "almost dead" Westley, he brings him back from the point of death using magic.
This is one of the only times magic is used in the story. There are some other magic elements such
as giants, and witches.
The film's ending contains one that is familiar to many fairy tales. In the final battle, everyone
collides and battles it out. Indigo fights the man who killed his father in a long duel, and eventually
comes out victorious. Buttercup and Westley meet Prince Humperdinck in the castle, and Westley
defeats him. After Westley's victory, him and Buttercup decide to let Humperdinck go. After the
battle in the castle, the main conflicts in the story are solved. After the battle ends, they all meet up
and ride into the sunset. This ending is alike to fairy tales in numerous ways.

Grimm vs Disney Essay
Chelsea Cruz Professor Blevins April 12, 2012 English 101 Grimm vs. Disney Most people cannot
imagine coveted childhood fairytale with pure sadistic characters, blood, death and neglect. Disney
motion pictures have depicted their classic fairytales by painting picture of princess with a loving
parent, a dead parent, and a wonderful outlook on life with just the hope of dreams coming true.
Many people cannot fathom the idea of a beloved fairytale containing the dark acts of rape, torture,
and cannibalism. After all, Snow White's apple was just meant to put her to sleep; and Sleeping
Beauty did find her prince right? Wrong. In the original Grimm Fairytales Snow Whites apple was

In the Disney tale, her father is depicted as a loving and caring man whose most sacred is his
daughter Cinderella. In Grimm's version the two stepsisters are not ugly but actually beautiful with
evil inside them. The step–sisters continuously abuse and mistreat Cinderella and her father doesn't
die but instead turns a blind eye to the situation and lets it continue. As the story continues it is clear
that Cinderella's father abandons her. After the ball Disney ends their story with the prince searching
for the maiden who fits the shoe. Cinderella is locked away so she wouldn't be able to try it on the
glass slipper and then is rescued by her furry friends. She then shows that the shoe is indeed hers
and she and the prince live happily ever after. In Grimm's version, although a lot more graphic, we
are told that in a desperate attempt to fit the coveted shoe, the step–sisters cut off pieces of their feet
and trick the prince until two crows relay him a message exposing their deficit. The crows then
pluck out the eyes of the step–sisters and they, along with their black–hearted mother, are left as
beggars. Disney's version doesn't go into detail about the consequences of the Cinderella's step
relatives. Grimm's tale conveys a story of a girl whose morals, soul, and faith in God and her
mother's words are what defines her beauty. They reinstate this point by describing even the step–
sisters as works of beauty. By

Dominique LaPierre's The City of Joy Essay
Dominique LaPierre's The City of Joy "His suffering was transformed into surprise then peace, the
peace that comes from being loved" (C.O.J. p. 254). In the book the City of Joy, Hasari, Mother
Theresa, Stephan Kolvaski and Max Loeb all experienced the joy and helpfulness that comes from
being loved. Their problems and troubles through out the book help them to understand how to
make it through tough times. Examples from this book and life show that modern medicine is not
always the best way to help the sick or injured. Peoples love and kindness for each other is the most
valuable gift you can give someone. "This city isn't all that inhuman" (C.O.J. p. 82). Hasari said this

the father who forgives" (C.O.J. p. 161). This is a prayer Stephan Kolvaski said when he first arrived
in Calcutta. Kolvaski used his faith and love with to come to Calcutta to help the needy. Even when
the people of India didn't share the blame beliefs he did, he helped feed the starving and cure the
sick. His kindness helped many people in his village. Kolvaskis fight to help the poor brought him
and Bandonna together. Bandonna has a way with the sick the hungry like on one else did. She cared
for them in a way that people wished they could understand. "No one had ever taught her, yet she
knew it all through intuition, friendship, and love" (C.O.J. p. 168). She continued to care for the
poor when she was sick or even in danger. Bandonna's love and ability to care for people inspired
Kolvolski to bring in more help from others. Max Loeb decided to come to Calcutta to help out in
Kolvaski's plan. Max learned to treat the injured with kindness even when looking at them made
him ill. As one of his first jobs Max was to deliver a baby to a leper woman. The gruesome looking
people made him wonder how they could be so happy in a place like that. "All the lepers were

Little Red Riding Hood And Goldilocks Similarities
Growing up, I read many fables and tales of fiction. Two of the most notable being Little Red
Riding Hood and Goldilocks. The reason for this is because they are so relatable to our own
childhood of being mischievous, careless, and imaginable.
In the story, "Little Red Riding Hood",a young, obedient girl is given the task of traveling to help
her sick granny. Little Red Riding Hood was very outgoing and courageous taking a trail though the
woods. Even though she knew about a wolf in the woods, she took the risk and kept going. When
she came across the wolf she was very naive to think the wolf was her granny. She was quick witted
and quickly got the attention of a woodsmen for help.

The Diving Bell And The Butterfly
Papillon Gratuit
Question #1: Analyze a film
A caterpillar is kept captive inside a chrysalis for months or even up to two years ("Butterfly Life
Cycle"). Jean–Dominique Bauby was held captive in his chrysalis, but that did not stop him in
becoming his own butterfly. The 2007 French film, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly was directed
by Julian Schnabel. This film is about a forty–three–year–old man, Jean–Dominique Bauby, who
was the editor of Elle Magazine. He was valuable to the fashion world. He has reached the top of his
career and had a publishing contract to write his book on a 19th century tale, until one day he found
himself waking up in a hospital bed in Berck–Su–Mer Hospital ("The Diving Bell and The Butterfly
(2007) –Synopsis"). Jean–Dominique suffered a severe stroke, that led him to a rare neurological
condition called, "locked–in syndrome," (Glenn 50). This is where all the voluntary muscles are non
existent (paralyzed), except for the eyes, in this case only his right eye (Glenn 50). By analyzing the
cinematography and music we can appreciate Bauby's perspective in life, which allows us to have a
distinct connection to his emotional and physical condition.

What Is The Central Idea Of The Wife's Story
The central idea of the short story, "The Wife's Story," by Ursula Le Guin, is a wolf who finds out
she is the wife of a werewolf. To support this the author states, "I saw him, I had to see him, my own
dear love, turned into the hateful one" (LeGuin 7, lines 95–96). This quote shows the wife finding
out about her husband's "curse," which is the central idea. The character vs. character conflict of the
family finding out about the husband and the character vs. self conflict of the husband changing into
a human and or wolf helps develop the central idea because, without these conflicts there would be
no story. In the short story, "The Wife's Story," by Ursula LeGuin, there are many different forms of
conflict. Some examples of those are, character vs. character when the family finds out about the
husband being a werewolf, and character vs. self with the husband dealing with him being a
werewolf and changing between man and wolf. To support this the author states, "I saw him, I had
to see him, my own dear love, turned into the hateful one" (LeGuin 7, lines 95–96). This quote

Fairy Tales Develop Literacy and Imagination in Children
Fairy tales are not only a source of cultural literacy for children but also a means of developing
imagination and a sense of curiosity about the world. Thus, They are a primary source of child
development. They teach children how to handle fear and most importantly, teach young girls about
the transition from childhood to sexual adulthood. Thus, these stories form the norms of the
societies in which children develop. Reading or listening to fairy tales, children slowly develop a
sense of gender role and learn how they are supposed to act in society. It is said that a beautiful girl
needs to obey by doing domestic work and learn to act like a lady so that one day she can find a man
and get married.
1. in Cinderella: Or the Glass Slipper by Charles Perrault, it is said that Cinderella is beautiful and
.... and is hated by her stepmother and stepsisters because of her beauty. Thus, the stepmother makes
her do all the domestic work, such as cleaning and prohibits her from any privileges that the
stepsisters might have.
When it is announced that the prince is holding a ball to find himself a wife, it is evident that
Cinderella cannot attend. This shows how the female power of the antagonist represses the heroine's
development into sexual adulthood. With the ultimate goal of every female in fairy tales of getting
married, due to her stepmother's and thus stepsister's hatred, Cinderella is deprived from that

Goldilocks And Red Riding Hood Comparative Essay
The story of Little Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks are very different but similar in some ways.
The story of Goldilocks has to do with a little girl breaking into a family of bears' house, while Little
Red Riding Hood centers on a little girl going to her grandmother's house to later discover there is a
wolf impersonating as her grandma. However, the girls' decisions are the reason the stories are even
famous. Goldilocks and Red Riding Hood made different decisions that affected the plot of both
stories. If Little Red Riding Hood had never gone to her grandmother's house, she would never have
known there was a wolf in disguise. The same concept applies to Goldilocks. If she had never
wandered into the bears' home or if she had completed her crimes quicker, the story would be
completely different. Red Riding Hood's decisions are cautious and thoughtful, unlike those of
Goldilocks. She was being generous by giving her grandmother some fresh cakes that she made
while Goldilocks broke into a home, ate their food, and broke their furniture. Goldilocks ventures
into the woods without her parent's permission while Red Riding Hood's parents knew her
whereabouts. Goldilocks simply doesn't care about how others feel, and she makes herself the first

Chapter Summary Of The Book 'The Bee': Questions And Answers
1. Considering the title, it's no surprise that bees are a fundamental part of this novel. I like to think
that in the beginning of the novel, when Lily captures a bee in the jar, the bee represents her mother,
Deborah. Later in the novel, we learn that Deborah falls in love with T–Ray, which could be the part
where the jar traps the bee inside. When Lily opens the jar so the bee could leave, the bee doesn't,
which could represent Deborah when she could have left T–Ray but she didn't because she was
pregnant. When the bees finally left the jar, it represents how Deborah finally escapes and ran off to
Tiburon. Of course, this is not the only reason the bees are important in the novel. When Lily runs

Essay about The Many Versions of Cinderella
Each person in the world has heard of Cinderella, no matter what kind of version it may be.
Cinderella is the one fairy tale story that has been popular and will always be the one tale that has to
be told to children. Words and story lines might be twist and turn, but in the end the knowledge of
the story will be learned in similar ways. As we all know when one story is told another is created,
when one is at its best then another is at its worse. One version will always be better than another,
but no matter what version it might be the story will be told. There are many things one has learned

Also similar things like the mother get sent away or died; stepsisters always try to stop the wedding
or the prince from being with Cinderella; in the end the stepfamily get what they deserve and so do
Cinderella. Differences are in Perrault's version he stresses the values and materialistic worries of
the middle–class while Grimm's version focus on harsh realities of life associated with the peasant
culture. Also, Grimm's version the help that Cinderella gets do not come from the fairy god–mother
but the wishing tree that grows on her mother grave; stepsisters try to trick the prince by cutting off
parts of their feet in order to get the slippers and not like other versions by just simply trying the
shoe on. Another is the prince is alerted by two pigeons who peck out the stepsisters eyes, and also
in the Grimm's version the prince get tricked twice but spared by the birds. In which this lowers the
prince's status and he seems less heroic, and raising Cinderella's status as a strong–willed
individuals. Brothers Grimm portrays Cinderella as a headstrong orphan who becomes a heroine by
standing up for herself even though it may result in punishment in which is completely different
from the other versions because the prince try to find Cinderella and become the heroic person.
Also, the writing style is different which completely modifies the tale. The significance throughout

"Minimalism, here, does not stand for a reduction of means, but rather an amplification of means
that have their starting point in a reduced syntax", Perrault, (1999). However, his works are
constantly influenced by project location's geography and based on the appliance of geometry as a
planning instrument. It can clearly be seen in the design of the French National Library – in order to
save and redeem the place that is built to the scale of the capital, National Library of France was
designed to introduce generous free open space and volume (Perrault, 1999). It is materialised by
four tall towers, defining the boundaries of an esplanade. These structures propose a voluminous
verticality that defines the poetry of the complex. Furthermore, the four corner towers resemble four
open books, all facing one another, they present a symbolic place by imposing the library's identity
on the urban landmarks. They develop and enhance the idea of the four beacons that invite and
attract attention to the space. The towers present themselves as an ongoing process of learning and
developing of knowledge and identify this space as cultural treasure (Perrault, 1999).
Minimalism and "large containers" are common and powerful themes in Perrault's work
(Capitanucci and Perrault, 2006). They are visible internally and externally, where the vast racks of

Verdimillious Spell Research Paper
The Verdimillious Charm is a great multipurpose charm. While it isn't the best self defense charm, it
will work in a pinch. While saying the incantation, pronounced as vur–duh–MILL–ee–us, and using
a forward slashing motion ending on the target you will send out a torrent of green sparks that will
engulf your target. Now it will only produce a slight stinging sensation, and almost immediately
after you should send out another spell that would be more effective, like a disarming charm, or a
stunning charm. Though turning and running as there is no other good way out of the situation. An
instance in which you would use this spell is if you were minding your business at home, and a
werewolf is at your door, and not a friendly one at that. Your floundering for a spell, and then you
remember, you can buy time with the Verdimilious Charm. So you cast the spell onto the werewolf,
and get you just enough time to gather your family and run. Another way this spell can be used is
when you are in a pinch and you need light quickly this spell will work for you. Waving your wand
arm over your head in a circular motion and saying the incantation you will produce sparks that will
light up a room. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Pan's Labyrinth As A Fairy Tale
"Pan's Labyrinth" was a fairytale that took place during the Spanish Civil war. This movie was a
good example of a fairytale for many different reasons. One reason why "Pan's Labyrinth" is a good
example of a fairy tale is because of the use of the fairytale characters: faun, fairy, and evil human
eating monster. In a fairytale is usually has unexpected monsters or creatures and this movie has a
bunch of mythical creatures. Another example of how "Pan's Labyrinth" is a good example of a
fairytale is because of the way the story goes. In this film is has an evil leader and his army with his
beliefs, and it also has the side against him from accomplishing his evil plans. The last reason why
this is a good example of fairy tale is because of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a fairytale, they usually have some evil being with some extent of power to inflict pain, torture,
confuse, etc. others that the evil person would like to influence in a negative way. In this movie, the
evil person is the Spanish army's leader, and the Spanish army's power is his massive army that will
obey his every command with no revolution because if they do, they will be killed. For example, he
found out a doctor was on the other side, he put the doctor in a room with the army leader and the
doctor alone. Interrogated him, and eventually killed him for doing so anyways. This evil Spanish
leader, had not only power but authority already made in a conference room with other leaders and
branches from the Spanish government. The last part that makes this movie a fairytale is the items
that are used throughout the movie to change or alter the outcome of events. In the beginning a stone
was missing an eye, eventually the little girl found the missing piece of the stone and put it back in
the spot where it was supposed to go. After she had put the eye back in the stone, a big praying
mantis looking insect had sprouted out of the mouth that was wide open. The girl nearly instantly
said "Are you a fairy?" somehow the girl knew it was a fairy, but it hadn't shown its true form till
later in the movie when the girl and her mom are lying in bed and she tells the insect, "You're a
fairy", the insect changes into its fairy form. In another scene of the movie the faun

Chapter Summary Of Beastly By Alex Flinn
Chapter 7– In this chapter I learned what literary canon was. I learned that it is a master of works
that are usually studied in college. Writers use elements from kiddie stories to shape their stories.
Most of the time this is too complex to put in a text. Foster also talked about how writers we know
tend to take the basic fairytales and kiddie stories and add depth to them. We all know for example
The Wizard of Oz was turned into Wicked. He also talked about how when reading these type of
stories, we want the strangeness and suspicion but at the same time, we also want to be familiar with
the characters and know who they are. We want to be able to relate to the story in some kind of way.
Our responses to a story are conditioned our encounters before with the original ... Show more

Foster also talked about how fairytales. The bible, mythology and other literary works are apart of
one big story. My first example the relates to the chapter is the book "Beastly" written by Alex Flinn
which is based on "Beauty and the Beast" but in a more modern way. The way this book relates is
Kyle (the beast) is a mean guy who always pulled pranks on people. Until one day he got cursed and
then turned into a hideous beast and the only way to break the spell is to have a girl fall inlove with
his beastly form and kiss him as proof of her love and the curse will be reversed. Another example
that relates to this chapter would be the novel "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens. Which is
about a boy Pip who is controlled by Mrs. Joe( evil step–mother). He then runs into Magwich (fairy
godmother) who motivates Pip to learn and love Estella

What Is Poltergeist?
One of the big events of my childhood was seeing Poltergeist for the first time at seven years old. I
saw it on a 4:3 set on a by–now very old DVD in my parents' bedroom, after my mom had recently
come home from the hospital after surgery. One night, my dad came home from the library with
some DVDs, and one of them was Poltergeist.
I popped it into the DVD player without hesitation because I'd wanted to see it since I was five. I
knew from the moment it started, Poltergeist was going to be a great movie, but little did I know it
would become my favorite movie of all time, and I'd want to experience it again and again.

Nelson plays Steve, a husband and father who's willing to do anything to save his family, so
believably, nothing about it feels fake. JoBeth Williams plays Diane, a distraught mother, so
believably, you'll believe what's happening on screen is hurting her. Heather O'Rourke gives the best
performance by a five–year–old ever. Zelda Rubinstein is also great. It doesn't even seem like
they're acting. The special effects still hold up, because they still look real. The plot is still very
original, because it's set in modern suburban America, and it's about a normal family that loves each
other, rather than an abusive husband and father. Poltergeist is so well–written that nobody has to
die, nor does it have to be gory to keep us on the edge of our seats. Spielberg and Hooper keep it
subtle by hardly showing the ghosts. Poltergeist features a great plot, great acting, great directing,
and great writing. I can't recommend Poltergeist enough.
Poltergeist is a kid's movie, so it's not all that scary, though there are scenes that may scare you or
creep you out, but you won't be scarred for life. In the end it really is a fun thrill ride. Poltergeist is a
movie every kid must see by the time they're eight years old. For some reason, I find myself trying
to hold back tears every time I see

Summary: The Diving Bell And The Butterfly
In their respective texts, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and The Cry of the Gull, Jean–
Dominique Bauby and Emmanuelle Laborit tackle the daunting task of radically shaping their non–
disabled audience's opinions. Though they certainly contain therapeutic elements, they are highly
persuasive in their content. Laborit follows the traditional route of the polemic in her autobiography,
using The Cry of the Gull as a foundation for critiques on various controversies in the D/deaf
community. Bauby, on the other hand, takes a narrower approach as he essentially argues for his
consciousness. The scope of both Laborit and Bauby's audiences also reflect their arguments at
hand. Despite their differences, both of these texts become polemic pieces in ... Show more content

"I'm using my second language, the language of hearing people, to proclaim with absolute certainty
that sign language is the native language of deaf people" (3). In this sentence alone, Laborit has
established both her target audience and her intent. Thus, it can be understood that The Cry of the
Gull takes a much more classically polemic route. While the text is still rife with Laborit's personal
experiences, there are two chapters within the text which explicitly present it as an argumentative
text. These two chapters are Chapter 20 and Chapter 24–respectively, "AIDS and the Sun" and "Mr.
Implanter" (109–25). In the first chapter, Laborit writes extensively about how "information
campaigns on AIDS are organized by hearing people for hearing people" (80). Laborit goes on to
express that this specific technique ultimately kills individuals within the deaf community, making it
overwhelmingly clear that she is attempting to push for change within such information campaigns.
These pleas are backed up with statistical information, such as the fact that "there are three and a
half million deaf people in France who can vote" and have the "right to be informed, just like
everybody else" (118). In this instance, Emmanuelle Laborit is using her position as an award–
winning actress to bolster an argument about AIDS campaigns geared specifically towards deaf
community. She also uses her position to shine a light on the controversy surrounding cochlear
implants. In "Mr. Implanter," Laborit compares cochlear implants to "a form of ethnic cleansing,"
using the same methods as she did in "AIDS and the Sun" in order to construct a compelling
argument (125). Despite the presence of other chapters more based in Laborit's own life, these
chapters make it quite evident that The Cry of the Gull is an

Review Of Margaret Atwood 's Bluebeard 's Egg
Revision of "Bluebeard": An analysis of Margaret Atwood's "Bluebeard's Egg"
Margaret Atwood's short story, "Bluebeard's Egg" is a contemporary retelling of the original story
"Bluebeard" that is written by Charles Perrault. Atwood's revision differs from the traditional tale of
"Bluebeard" in that it takes place in a modern day setting instead of a fantastical environment, it
lacks magical elements and it is a narrative that is told through the third person point of view instead
of omniscient. "Bluebeard's Egg" explores the themes of, infidelity, ingenuity, concealment, and
curiosity by shifting the fairy tale into a modern, middle–classed environment so her readers can
find it more relatable.
"Bluebeard's Egg" is told in a third person point of view in order to expose Sally's mental
movements which she has concealed through images of fairy tales and happily–ever–afters. She
wants to replace her normal, non–romantic life with her husband Ed to a fantastical one where she is
the "princess" (Atwood 772). Shuli Barzilai notes the difference in the narrative perspectives
between the two literary texts: "Instead of the omniscience of most fairy–tale narrators, Atwood uses
restricted internal focalization" (192). The comment about internal focalization indicates that Sally
is the main focus of the story. Since Ed never articulates his point of view Sally's statement of Ed
being stupid is biased. On the other hand, in "Bluebeard" the story is told through an omniscient
point of

Little Red Riding Hood Metaphors
Everyone knows the story of Little Red Riding Hood; there are some different versions all around
the world. In my childhood, Little Red Riding Hood was a tale of a little girl who loved wearing a
red riding hood, went to visit her sick grandma alone. On her way to grandma's house, a big wolf
came and followed her, then ate both the grandma and little girl. At last, a passing hunter killed the
wolf and opened his stomach, saved the grandma and little girl's lives. In my country, this story is
used to teach children to have a sense of safety awareness and not to listen to random strangers.
However, based on the feminine situations in China, I see this story through a cruel viewing angle.

Cinderella, By Charles Perrault
In Charles Perrault's "Cinderella," there are many different ways he conveys goodness being a
magical thing in people's hearts. When reading it, it is easy to point out how he thinks kindness is
the most important thing it one's life. In Maria Tatar's "An Introduction to Fairy Tales," she talks
about fairy tales being an escape to children. She states that there is a world of imagination in fairy
tales that takes reality and makes it exciting and adventurous. She also mentions that fairy tales help
influence the way people look at certain things and the paths they choose. "Cinderella," by Charles
Perrault, is a story that inspires all kinds of people to focus on inner beauty in order to get their

fairy tale. The name "Cinderella" is a name known throughout the world; it is known by a variation
of people ranging from kids to adults. We associate this name with the average fairy tale. When
looking at this particular story of Cinderella, it is clear that it is the story of the house maiden who
ends up living happily ever after. The main point of "Cinderella" is that when someone is a good
person and they live a life of kindness, good things happen to them. For example, throughout the
story Perrault hints to the idea of Cinderella being beautiful and having a good heart, "Cinderella, in
spite of her mean apparel, was a hundred times more handsome than her sisters, though

Cinderella In Charles Perrault's Cinderella Frozen In Time
Cinderella Frozen in Time: Why Cinderella continues be portrayed as a victim in the era of
feminism
Cinderella has changed so little over time that it seems we're still in the 1700's reading Charles
Perrault's first edition. And yet it remains one of the most popular fairy tales read to
Joshi 8 children. The role of women continues to be either the cruel, evil one or the good, docile one
while the prince continues to be the saving grace of the helpless girl. The skeleton hasn't changed
much as well. A damsel in distress, saved by a knight in shining armor, who falls in love with her
and they live happily ever after. Does this sound familiar? This sentence might as well be a fairy
tale. We've seen this over and over in Cinderella, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White.
I chose Cendrillon or the Little Glass Slippers by Charles Perrault as my fairy tale. I grew up
reading the Disney story book, inspired by Perrault's version. I can still imagine the animated faces
even though it's been years since I've read that book. My tale is a modern adaptation of Cendrillon,
where the character is not weak–willed or naive. The main focus is on justice and on her relationship
with her step–siblings and her Prince which is much more than superficial attraction. In Perrault's
version, Cinderella's father remarries after the death of her mother. Her step–mother's cruel
treatment and aggravation is due to her own daughters' unpleasant deposition when compared to

Differences Between Disney And Grimm's Cinderella
Differences Between Disney and Grimm's Cinderella There are many different versions of the
classic story, Cinderella. Grimm's version was just as wonderful, but had more twisted moments
than Disney's story. Both stories are about a girl who overcomes the cruelty of her evil stepmother
and stepsisters and ends up living happily ever after. Although, there are many differences, there are
three that stand out. The three main differences are, the father died in disney's version but did not die
in Gimms version, there was no fairy godmother in Grimm's version but there was in Disney's, and
in the original version the stepsisters cut their heels and toes off so it would fit in the slipper but in
the Disney version they did not. One major ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, what was Disney's thinking for changing it? The godmother in Cinderella symbolizes
Cinderella's guardian angel. By creating the fairy godmother instead of the magical hazel tree,
Disney created more magic in the story which makes it more interesting and fun for the audience.
The last difference between the two stories is quite disturbing. In Disney's Cinderella, when it came
time to try on the slipper the two stepsisters tried their hardest to squish their feet into it. However,
Grimms version is drastically different. Instead of trying to just squish their feet in, one step sister
cut the heel of her foot off and the other cut her big toe off. A reason to why Brothers Grimm might
have included that part is because they wrote this story in 1812. Disney did not want to have that in
their version of the story because of the audience that watches, such as little children and their
families. It would not be as enjoyable nor as humorous if they included that gruesome part of
Grimm's story. When comparing the Grimm Brothers story and Disney's version, they have three
major differences. By Disney changing Cinderella from the original Grimm version, they were
taking the dark and twisty parts and changing them into a more enjoyable scene. The changes
between the two stories are so drastic you might have never thought Disney's Cinderella was
originally based off of Grimm's written version,

Different Versions Of Sleeping Beauty Stretch From The...
Various versions of Sleeping Beauty stretch from the middle of the Renaissance period to
contemporary settings. The Ninth Captain's Tale by Arabian Nights is the earliest, recorded even
before its 1550 publishing (cite). In Italy, Giambattista Basile writes Sun, Moon and Talia, which is
the first record of the Sleeping Beauty tale in Europe. Charles Perrault's Sleeping Beauty in the
Wood revises the tale, making it more children friendly and most similar to the Brother's Grimm
version familiar with many children. Common throughout these stories, the princess character's
helpless nature is romanticized, not to mention the popular story of a prince finding a sleeping
princess and the two living happily ever. Despite this fairy tale's popularity, the several versions of
Sleeping Beauty endorse a submissive and powerless female by establishing a surreal, magical
setting around the sleeping princess character, dampening the alarming actions of the prince and
systemic lack of female agency. Magical elements present themselves throughout each of these fairy
tales. The princess character in each version is magically put to sleep or death. Perrault's version has
a fairy with a chariot of fire, pull by dragons. However, when the prince character is introduced, the
description of the surreal setting around the princess is emphasized, primarily the princess
character's place of rest. In The Ninth Captain's Tale, the mausoleum for Sittukhan is described as

Postmodernism As A Fairy Tale
Postmodernist thought has bought with it an interrogation of narrative strategies and ways of
looking at myths, history and even fairytales. Postmodernism, as Hutcheon suggests works through
parody to both legitimize and subvert that which it parodies.1 Postmodernism does not just offer to
shed light on new critical capacities but also to rethink history and to signal present representations
from past ones. Postmodern fairytale narratives thus offer, if not a counter–mandate, often a
"reading–into" the "classic" fairytale. These revisits offer a space, especially for women to question
and redefine gender roles. The "rewritings" offer images of woman, an underpinning of the Other,
normalised as part of culture. Since they rhetorically and literally "incorporate that which they aim
to contest"2 –modernism, history, the humanistic subject, other narrative texts and genre– they often
sublate as complicated metaphors of human situation. Postmodern fairytales seek to understand the
'fairytale', not as children's literature but within the broader context of folklore and literary studies.

strategies through which women are portrayed in four classic stories: "Snow ... Show more content

Comparing Cinderella And Cinderella
Traditionally fairytales have morals for their audiences. Throughout time, these stories develop
themes and ideas that allow readers to discover their purpose. These versions let the audience
envision the story from a newer perspective. Modified versions reveal the underlying cause of the
storyline and its characters. It is clear that "The Little Glass Slipper" published by Charles Perrault
in 1697 and "Cinderella" published by Brothers Grimm in 1812, display the overall modification of
the main idea. Within both tales these themes can be represented through the change in time, the
overall plot and character development. The newer purpose of modified stories is demonstrated in
"Cinderella". The fairytale originated from the story, "The Little Glass Slipper," which was written
by Charles Perrault. The original tale was reformed through the Brothers Grimm version, otherwise
known as "Cinderella". When analyzing the tales, the reader notices that each story has its own
moral, ending and plot. Both the 1697 and the 1812 versions results in a new ending .The original
tale concludes with kindness overruling beauty. The second version concludes with the stepsisters
being punished for their actions. The moral of Perrault's version describes Cinderella's kindness to
overrule the cruelness of society. The newer versions such as the Brothers Grimm tale display a
differing moral, which is that an individual's misbehavior will be punished. These endings allow

Diving Bell And The Butterfly Symbolism

  • 1. Diving Bell And The Butterfly Symbolism Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a movie about a man with a nickname of Jean–Do. Jean–Do was a writer, and had a stroke that put an end to his ability to walk and do some physical things. Something that was really great about the film was in the beginning of the movie when Jean–Do first awakes from his coma. In the beginning of the film when Jean opens his eye the camera is in a third person point of view. The camera is in Jean's point of view for majority of the film. The movie does a really good job with giving it from the main actor's point of view, and giving an exact representation of what Jean is seeing. When Jean opens his eye the camera is blurred up just like as if he has just awaken from a long nap. From the shot of the camera it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Importance Of Fairytales "Reading fairytales for a better growth to our youngest ones" A mother, an older sibling, an auntie, an uncle, a father, which one are you? Having a youngest one in your family also carries with eminent responsibility behind it. You might find yourself in a situation where you want them to grow up in a healthy environment. A healthy environment consists on a free–of–violence mind. Children will most likely try to mimic or imitate what they observe, and it's important to taught them the good rather than violent acts we see on TV, movies, and fairytales. Although these characteristics aren't at a hundred percent responsibility on fairytales since a lot of these values are thought from parents, most of the time children relies on the things they watch or read, and for how less it seems it can make an impact on them. There's also multiple variants of this magical story, however Charles Perrault's author of the French version of Cinderella offers a free– of–violence narrative perfect for children and families to read together. Firstly, Perrault's version is not only the best suitable for our youngest ones to read, but a very entertaining one. Perrault's version it's violence free, but it keeps the magic of the story into consistency. At a very young age, children will most likely try to mimic or imitate characteristics they see on the people that surrounds them, shows they watch, and stories they're told. A Cinderella story is not the exception for this. Any type of violence, for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Johnny Appleseed Research Paper A non historical or unverifiable story handed down by tradition from earlier times and popularly are accepted as historical can be called a legend. History past down by the oral tradition telling of previous events. Legends are a way to explain the unexplained that can not see touched, smelled, or tasted. In some cultures such as the Navajo or Intuits, traditions and past history of thier culture are passed down by story telling. History is written or rewritten by the winners. However, things can get warped if told, retold without a strong concern by the wrong people. There are many different variations of the same story. Like Cinderella, there are a lot of variations of Cinderella. Some legends are uncomfortably gory and greusome . Others have the Disney twist and are very kid friendly. I like the Disney ... You can go and visit Nov , Ohio, to see the 176–year–old tree, the last known to be planted by Johnny. People saw him doing this and started calling him "Johnny Apple seed" . It's plausible for him to do that. I didn't read anything that would be impassable. I've never read about this when I was younger. I think what he was trying to do was kinda nice. King Arthur is a legend with a mix of possible and impossible. Obviously wizards and spells are not real. However, we can't prove or disprove that Arthur lived. On the other hand it could be possible. Though one would think a sword that was stuck a stone for a long time would harm the blade. It is half plausible and half not plausible. The Goddodin is a Welsh poem which resoureces say was written about 1600AD. Aruthur is mentioned in this poem. • 9. The Little Glass Slipper By Charles Perrault Fairy–tales such as "The Little Glass Slipper" by Charles Perrault, "The Girl with No Hands" by the Grimm Brother and the Disney Movie "Cinderella" all successfully convey important and educational messages to their young reads. Many children are exposed to fairy–tale at a young age, and for these children fairy–tales play an important role in the development of their personal morals and values. "The Little Glass Slipper" and "Cinderella" both focus on a young girl who is mistreated by her step–mother and step–sisters and is later rescued by a prince, "The Girl with No Hands" is also about a young girl who is tormented by the devil and gets her hands cut off. A consistent message that is presented to children through these fairy–tales, both old and modern, is to never lose hope no matter how horrible the situation as good will always prevail and evil will perish "The Little Glass Slipper" by Perrault is old tale which features a girl by the name of Cinderella who is in an abusive home where she is neglected and verbally abused by both her stepmother and stepsisters. From riches to rags, Cinderella is forced to become a slave in her own home while at the same time having to deal with losing her father to her stepmother. Even though Cinderella is treated horribly, she never loses hope and keeps a good attitude, going as far as to even help her malicious stepsisters while they prepared for the ball. • 11. Comparing James Lapine's Into The Woods And Stephen Sondheim We watched Into the Woods by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim. Honestly, when you said we were going to watch a musical I thought, oh cool it's going to be like "Phantom of the Opera", or "High School Musical", but it wasn't like that at all. The costumes were pretty cool and the special effects were really awesome. I thought it was going to be really boring and dry, but there were some funny parts. I love the way Sondheim tied the sarcasm in with the release of tension and lesions. James Lapine wrote the book for Into the Woods he is an American stage director, filmmaker, playwright, screenwriter, and librettist. He graduated from Franklin and Marshal College and did a graduate study at the California Institute of the Arts. He has won many Tony Awards, and Drama Desk Awards; he also won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and the Peabody Award. In 2010 he was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame. • 13. Types Of Occupations Within The Workplace Essay Often in the world there are jobs that come across as rather boring or tedious to complete day in and day out. However, it is a must to keep these jobs as they allow us to provide basic needs for ourselves in life. Some types of occupations consist of a specialised job, with this, the five core job characteristics derived from the job characteristics model also apply to these jobs. Furthermore, the five job features are known to be skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy and feedback, each having their own importance. By identifying the characteristics, three redesigning techniques can be implemented being establishing client relationships which are, combining tasks, establishing client relationships and vertically loading the job. The specialised job holds the job characteristics and can be redesigned as well to improve on some of those five task features. Mortgage brokers are known to have very demanding jobs with having to settle deals involving different types of investment properties, providing home loan services and organise large amounts of documents. However, a mortgage broker may take upon a business intern or administrator which is a specialised job, these individuals look after their documents and organise all their client files. A specialised job can be further defined as 'a job composed of a small part of a larger task or process' (Williams & McWilliams 2014, p. 156). A business intern seems like a fancy name, but a primary job for them would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. The Film The Princess Bride The film The Princess Bride can be associated with many different genres. The story expresses many different genre elements, such as romance, action, and a comedy. Even though the movie shows all of these characteristics, I believe the movie should be mainly characterized as a fairytale. The film shares many characteristics with fairytale and fantasy movies, which I will list and discuss. I will be taking a closer look at the movie, and show how it compares to other fantasy and fairytale movies. One of the most obvious example of the movie being the fairy tale, is the involvement of royalty in the story. One of the main characters in the story, is Buttercup, who is a princess. Buttercup is a princess all the way through the film, and almost becomes a queen. Another main character is Prince Humperdinck, who is the prince of florin, the son of the king. Prince Humperdinck and Buttercup are stereotypical fairy tale characters. Humperdinck is the main antagonist of the story, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main way magic is invoked is with Miracle Max, who used to work for the King. When presented with the "almost dead" Westley, he brings him back from the point of death using magic. This is one of the only times magic is used in the story. There are some other magic elements such as giants, and witches. The film's ending contains one that is familiar to many fairy tales. In the final battle, everyone collides and battles it out. Indigo fights the man who killed his father in a long duel, and eventually comes out victorious. Buttercup and Westley meet Prince Humperdinck in the castle, and Westley defeats him. After Westley's victory, him and Buttercup decide to let Humperdinck go. After the battle in the castle, the main conflicts in the story are solved. After the battle ends, they all meet up and ride into the sunset. This ending is alike to fairy tales in numerous ways. ... • 17. Grimm vs Disney Essay Chelsea Cruz Professor Blevins April 12, 2012 English 101 Grimm vs. Disney Most people cannot imagine coveted childhood fairytale with pure sadistic characters, blood, death and neglect. Disney motion pictures have depicted their classic fairytales by painting picture of princess with a loving parent, a dead parent, and a wonderful outlook on life with just the hope of dreams coming true. Many people cannot fathom the idea of a beloved fairytale containing the dark acts of rape, torture, and cannibalism. After all, Snow White's apple was just meant to put her to sleep; and Sleeping Beauty did find her prince right? Wrong. In the original Grimm Fairytales Snow Whites apple was meant to kill her for good and Sleeping Beauty's prince was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the Disney tale, her father is depicted as a loving and caring man whose most sacred is his daughter Cinderella. In Grimm's version the two stepsisters are not ugly but actually beautiful with evil inside them. The step–sisters continuously abuse and mistreat Cinderella and her father doesn't die but instead turns a blind eye to the situation and lets it continue. As the story continues it is clear that Cinderella's father abandons her. After the ball Disney ends their story with the prince searching for the maiden who fits the shoe. Cinderella is locked away so she wouldn't be able to try it on the glass slipper and then is rescued by her furry friends. She then shows that the shoe is indeed hers and she and the prince live happily ever after. In Grimm's version, although a lot more graphic, we are told that in a desperate attempt to fit the coveted shoe, the step–sisters cut off pieces of their feet and trick the prince until two crows relay him a message exposing their deficit. The crows then pluck out the eyes of the step–sisters and they, along with their black–hearted mother, are left as beggars. Disney's version doesn't go into detail about the consequences of the Cinderella's step relatives. Grimm's tale conveys a story of a girl whose morals, soul, and faith in God and her mother's words are what defines her beauty. They reinstate this point by describing even the step– sisters as works of beauty. By ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dominique LaPierre's The City of Joy Essay Dominique LaPierre's The City of Joy "His suffering was transformed into surprise then peace, the peace that comes from being loved" (C.O.J. p. 254). In the book the City of Joy, Hasari, Mother Theresa, Stephan Kolvaski and Max Loeb all experienced the joy and helpfulness that comes from being loved. Their problems and troubles through out the book help them to understand how to make it through tough times. Examples from this book and life show that modern medicine is not always the best way to help the sick or injured. Peoples love and kindness for each other is the most valuable gift you can give someone. "This city isn't all that inhuman" (C.O.J. p. 82). This is a prayer Stephan Kolvaski said when he first arrived in Calcutta. Kolvaski used his faith and love with to come to Calcutta to help the needy. Even when the people of India didn't share the blame beliefs he did, he helped feed the starving and cure the sick. His kindness helped many people in his village. Kolvaskis fight to help the poor brought him and Bandonna together. Bandonna has a way with the sick the hungry like on one else did. She cared for them in a way that people wished they could understand. "No one had ever taught her, yet she knew it all through intuition, friendship, and love" (C.O.J. p. 168). She continued to care for the poor when she was sick or even in danger. Bandonna's love and ability to care for people inspired Kolvolski to bring in more help from others. Max Loeb decided to come to Calcutta to help out in Kolvaski's plan. Max learned to treat the injured with kindness even when looking at them made him ill. As one of his first jobs Max was to deliver a baby to a leper woman. The gruesome looking people made him wonder how they could be so happy in a place like that. The reason for this is because they are so relatable to our own childhood of being mischievous, careless, and imaginable. In the story, "Little Red Riding Hood",a young, obedient girl is given the task of traveling to help her sick granny. Little Red Riding Hood was very outgoing and courageous taking a trail though the woods. Even though she knew about a wolf in the woods, she took the risk and kept going. When she came across the wolf she was very naive to think the wolf was her granny. She was quick witted and quickly got the attention of a woodsmen for help. All she had to do was intercept a royal wedding in Canterlot and use a surprise attack. It would be simple. She disguised her self as the bride. Jean–Dominique Bauby was held captive in his chrysalis, but that did not stop him in becoming his own butterfly. The 2007 French film, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly was directed by Julian Schnabel. This film is about a forty–three–year–old man, Jean–Dominique Bauby, who was the editor of Elle Magazine. He was valuable to the fashion world. He has reached the top of his career and had a publishing contract to write his book on a 19th century tale, until one day he found himself waking up in a hospital bed in Berck–Su–Mer Hospital ("The Diving Bell and The Butterfly (2007) –Synopsis"). Jean–Dominique suffered a severe stroke, that led him to a rare neurological condition called, "locked–in syndrome," (Glenn 50). This is where all the voluntary muscles are non existent (paralyzed), except for the eyes, in this case only his right eye (Glenn 50). By analyzing the cinematography and music we can appreciate Bauby's perspective in life, which allows us to have a distinct connection to his emotional and physical condition. A title is one of the many main focal points that draw an audience's attention. With a title one can surmise if a movie is a horror movie or a romantic movie. • 27. What Is The Central Idea Of The Wife's Story The central idea of the short story, "The Wife's Story," by Ursula Le Guin, is a wolf who finds out she is the wife of a werewolf. To support this the author states, "I saw him, I had to see him, my own dear love, turned into the hateful one" (LeGuin 7, lines 95–96). This quote shows the wife finding out about her husband's "curse," which is the central idea. The character vs. character conflict of the family finding out about the husband and the character vs. self conflict of the husband changing into a human and or wolf helps develop the central idea because, without these conflicts there would be no story. In the short story, "The Wife's Story," by Ursula LeGuin, there are many different forms of conflict. Some examples of those are, character vs. character when the family finds out about the husband being a werewolf, and character vs. self with the husband dealing with him being a werewolf and changing between man and wolf. • 29. Fairy Tales Develop Literacy and Imagination in Children Fairy tales are not only a source of cultural literacy for children but also a means of developing imagination and a sense of curiosity about the world. Thus, They are a primary source of child development. They teach children how to handle fear and most importantly, teach young girls about the transition from childhood to sexual adulthood. Thus, these stories form the norms of the societies in which children develop. Reading or listening to fairy tales, children slowly develop a sense of gender role and learn how they are supposed to act in society. It is said that a beautiful girl needs to obey by doing domestic work and learn to act like a lady so that one day she can find a man and get married. 1. in Cinderella: Or the Glass Slipper by Charles Perrault, it is said that Cinderella is beautiful and .... and is hated by her stepmother and stepsisters because of her beauty. Thus, the stepmother makes her do all the domestic work, such as cleaning and prohibits her from any privileges that the stepsisters might have. When it is announced that the prince is holding a ball to find himself a wife, it is evident that Cinderella cannot attend. This shows how the female power of the antagonist represses the heroine's development into sexual adulthood. • 31. Goldilocks And Red Riding Hood Comparative Essay The story of Little Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks are very different but similar in some ways. The story of Goldilocks has to do with a little girl breaking into a family of bears' house, while Little Red Riding Hood centers on a little girl going to her grandmother's house to later discover there is a wolf impersonating as her grandma. However, the girls' decisions are the reason the stories are even famous. Goldilocks and Red Riding Hood made different decisions that affected the plot of both stories. If Little Red Riding Hood had never gone to her grandmother's house, she would never have known there was a wolf in disguise. The same concept applies to Goldilocks. If she had never wandered into the bears' home or if she had completed her crimes quicker, the story would be completely different. Red Riding Hood's decisions are cautious and thoughtful, unlike those of Goldilocks. She was being generous by giving her grandmother some fresh cakes that she made while Goldilocks broke into a home, ate their food, and broke their furniture. Goldilocks ventures into the woods without her parent's permission while Red Riding Hood's parents knew her whereabouts. I like to think that in the beginning of the novel, when Lily captures a bee in the jar, the bee represents her mother, Deborah. Later in the novel, we learn that Deborah falls in love with T–Ray, which could be the part where the jar traps the bee inside. When Lily opens the jar so the bee could leave, the bee doesn't, which could represent Deborah when she could have left T–Ray but she didn't because she was pregnant. When the bees finally left the jar, it represents how Deborah finally escapes and ran off to Tiburon. Of course, this is not the only reason the bees are important in the novel. It can clearly be seen in the design of the French National Library – in order to save and redeem the place that is built to the scale of the capital, National Library of France was designed to introduce generous free open space and volume (Perrault, 1999). It is materialised by four tall towers, defining the boundaries of an esplanade. These structures propose a voluminous verticality that defines the poetry of the complex. Furthermore, the four corner towers resemble four open books, all facing one another, they present a symbolic place by imposing the library's identity on the urban landmarks. They develop and enhance the idea of the four beacons that invite and attract attention to the space. The towers present themselves as an ongoing process of learning and developing of knowledge and identify this space as cultural treasure (Perrault, 1999). • 47. Chapter Summary Of Beastly By Alex Flinn Chapter 7– In this chapter I learned what literary canon was. I learned that it is a master of works that are usually studied in college. Writers use elements from kiddie stories to shape their stories. Most of the time this is too complex to put in a text. Foster also talked about how writers we know tend to take the basic fairytales and kiddie stories and add depth to them. We all know for example The Wizard of Oz was turned into Wicked. He also talked about how when reading these type of stories, we want the strangeness and suspicion but at the same time, we also want to be familiar with the characters and know who they are. We want to be able to relate to the story in some kind of way. Our responses to a story are conditioned our encounters before with the original ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Zelda Rubinstein is also great. It doesn't even seem like they're acting. The special effects still hold up, because they still look real. The plot is still very original, because it's set in modern suburban America, and it's about a normal family that loves each other, rather than an abusive husband and father. Poltergeist is so well–written that nobody has to die, nor does it have to be gory to keep us on the edge of our seats. Spielberg and Hooper keep it subtle by hardly showing the ghosts. Poltergeist features a great plot, great acting, great directing, and great writing. I can't recommend Poltergeist enough. Summary: The Diving Bell And The Butterfly In their respective texts, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and The Cry of the Gull, Jean– Dominique Bauby and Emmanuelle Laborit tackle the daunting task of radically shaping their non– disabled audience's opinions. Though they certainly contain therapeutic elements, they are highly persuasive in their content. Laborit follows the traditional route of the polemic in her autobiography, using The Cry of the Gull as a foundation for critiques on various controversies in the D/deaf community. Bauby, on the other hand, takes a narrower approach as he essentially argues for his consciousness. The scope of both Laborit and Bauby's audiences also reflect their arguments at hand. "I'm using my second language, the language of hearing people, to proclaim with absolute certainty that sign language is the native language of deaf people" (3). In this sentence alone, Laborit has established both her target audience and her intent. Thus, it can be understood that The Cry of the Gull takes a much more classically polemic route. While the text is still rife with Laborit's personal experiences, there are two chapters within the text which explicitly present it as an argumentative text. These two chapters are Chapter 20 and Chapter 24–respectively, "AIDS and the Sun" and "Mr. Implanter" (109–25). In the first chapter, Laborit writes extensively about how "information campaigns on AIDS are organized by hearing people for hearing people" (80). Laborit goes on to express that this specific technique ultimately kills individuals within the deaf community, making it overwhelmingly clear that she is attempting to push for change within such information campaigns. These pleas are backed up with statistical information, such as the fact that "there are three and a half million deaf people in France who can vote" and have the "right to be informed, just like everybody else" (118). In this instance, Emmanuelle Laborit is using her position as an award– winning actress to bolster an argument about AIDS campaigns geared specifically towards deaf community. She also uses her position to shine a light on the controversy surrounding cochlear implants. In "Mr. Implanter," Laborit compares cochlear implants to "a form of ethnic cleansing," using the same methods as she did in "AIDS and the Sun" in order to construct a compelling argument (125). Review Of Margaret Atwood 's Bluebeard 's Egg Revision of "Bluebeard": An analysis of Margaret Atwood's "Bluebeard's Egg" Margaret Atwood's short story, "Bluebeard's Egg" is a contemporary retelling of the original story "Bluebeard" that is written by Charles Perrault. Atwood's revision differs from the traditional tale of "Bluebeard" in that it takes place in a modern day setting instead of a fantastical environment, it lacks magical elements and it is a narrative that is told through the third person point of view instead of omniscient. "Bluebeard's Egg" explores the themes of, infidelity, ingenuity, concealment, and curiosity by shifting the fairy tale into a modern, middle–classed environment so her readers can find it more relatable. "Bluebeard's Egg" is told in a third person point of view in order to expose Sally's mental movements which she has concealed through images of fairy tales and happily–ever–afters. She wants to replace her normal, non–romantic life with her husband Ed to a fantastical one where she is the "princess" (Atwood 772). Shuli Barzilai notes the difference in the narrative perspectives between the two literary texts: "Instead of the omniscience of most fairy–tale narrators, Atwood uses restricted internal focalization" (192). The comment about internal focalization indicates that Sally is the main focus of the story. Since Ed never articulates his point of view Sally's statement of Ed being stupid is biased. • 61. Cinderella In Charles Perrault's Cinderella Frozen In Time Cinderella Frozen in Time: Why Cinderella continues be portrayed as a victim in the era of feminism Cinderella has changed so little over time that it seems we're still in the 1700's reading Charles Perrault's first edition. And yet it remains one of the most popular fairy tales read to Joshi 8 children. The role of women continues to be either the cruel, evil one or the good, docile one while the prince continues to be the saving grace of the helpless girl. The skeleton hasn't changed much as well. A damsel in distress, saved by a knight in shining armor, who falls in love with her and they live happily ever after. Does this sound familiar? This sentence might as well be a fairy tale. We've seen this over and over in Cinderella, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. I chose Cendrillon or the Little Glass Slippers by Charles Perrault as my fairy tale. I grew up reading the Disney story book, inspired by Perrault's version. I can still imagine the animated faces even though it's been years since I've read that book. My tale is a modern adaptation of Cendrillon, where the character is not weak–willed or naive. The main focus is on justice and on her relationship with her step–siblings and her Prince which is much more than superficial attraction. In Perrault's version, Cinderella's father remarries after the death of her mother. Her step–mother's cruel treatment and aggravation is due to her own daughters' unpleasant deposition when compared to Cinderella's good ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. Differences Between Disney And Grimm's Cinderella Differences Between Disney and Grimm's Cinderella There are many different versions of the classic story, Cinderella. Grimm's version was just as wonderful, but had more twisted moments than Disney's story. Both stories are about a girl who overcomes the cruelty of her evil stepmother and stepsisters and ends up living happily ever after. Although, there are many differences, there are three that stand out. The three main differences are, the father died in disney's version but did not die in Gimms version, there was no fairy godmother in Grimm's version but there was in Disney's, and in the original version the stepsisters cut their heels and toes off so it would fit in the slipper but in the Disney version they did not. One major ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, what was Disney's thinking for changing it? The godmother in Cinderella symbolizes Cinderella's guardian angel. By creating the fairy godmother instead of the magical hazel tree, Disney created more magic in the story which makes it more interesting and fun for the audience. The last difference between the two stories is quite disturbing. In Disney's Cinderella, when it came time to try on the slipper the two stepsisters tried their hardest to squish their feet into it. However, Grimms version is drastically different. Instead of trying to just squish their feet in, one step sister cut the heel of her foot off and the other cut her big toe off. A reason to why Brothers Grimm might have included that part is because they wrote this story in 1812. Disney did not want to have that in their version of the story because of the audience that watches, such as little children and their families. It would not be as enjoyable nor as humorous if they included that gruesome part of Grimm's story. When comparing the Grimm Brothers story and Disney's version, they have three major differences. By Disney changing Cinderella from the original Grimm version, they were taking the dark and twisty parts and changing them into a more enjoyable scene. The changes between the two stories are so drastic you might have never thought Disney's Cinderella was originally based off of Grimm's written version, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Different Versions Of Sleeping Beauty Stretch From The... Various versions of Sleeping Beauty stretch from the middle of the Renaissance period to contemporary settings. The Ninth Captain's Tale by Arabian Nights is the earliest, recorded even before its 1550 publishing (cite). In Italy, Giambattista Basile writes Sun, Moon and Talia, which is the first record of the Sleeping Beauty tale in Europe. Charles Perrault's Sleeping Beauty in the Wood revises the tale, making it more children friendly and most similar to the Brother's Grimm version familiar with many children. Common throughout these stories, the princess character's helpless nature is romanticized, not to mention the popular story of a prince finding a sleeping princess and the two living happily ever. Despite this fairy tale's popularity, the several versions of Sleeping Beauty endorse a submissive and powerless female by establishing a surreal, magical setting around the sleeping princess character, dampening the alarming actions of the prince and systemic lack of female agency. Magical elements present themselves throughout each of these fairy tales. The princess character in each version is magically put to sleep or death. Perrault's version has a fairy with a chariot of fire, pull by dragons. However, when the prince character is introduced, the description of the surreal setting around the princess is emphasized, primarily the princess character's place of rest. In The Ninth Captain's Tale, the mausoleum for Sittukhan is described as spectacular with "columns ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Analyzing The Character 'Magnus Chase' For my January book project letter the character I'm going to pick is Magnus Chase. I picked Magnus because he dreams for a lot of things like he wishes he could keep everyone in the world safe from harm, and for villains to stop doing villainy things. So during this time I'm going to talk about my dream for Magnus. My character Magnus Chase would dream for peace throughout the world. He wants to make sure that no one gets hurt. One of the major reasons this is, is because when Magnus was seven years old his mom died. Magnus's mom didn't die of old age or a diseases or anything like that she died from wolves. And not just any ordinary wolves she died by Fenris's wolves. Fenris is one of Loki's sons who got turned into a wolf by the gods as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Postmodernism As A Fairy Tale Postmodernist thought has bought with it an interrogation of narrative strategies and ways of looking at myths, history and even fairytales. Postmodernism, as Hutcheon suggests works through parody to both legitimize and subvert that which it parodies.1 Postmodernism does not just offer to shed light on new critical capacities but also to rethink history and to signal present representations from past ones. Postmodern fairytale narratives thus offer, if not a counter–mandate, often a "reading–into" the "classic" fairytale. These revisits offer a space, especially for women to question and redefine gender roles. The "rewritings" offer images of woman, an underpinning of the Other, normalised as part of culture. Since they rhetorically and literally "incorporate that which they aim to contest"2 –modernism, history, the humanistic subject, other narrative texts and genre– they often sublate as complicated metaphors of human situation. Postmodern fairytales seek to understand the 'fairytale', not as children's literature but within the broader context of folklore and literary studies. Cristina Bacchilega in her seminal work "Postmodern Fairy Tales" that focuses on the narrative strategies through which women are portrayed in four classic stories: "Snow ... • 71. Comparing Cinderella And Cinderella Traditionally fairytales have morals for their audiences. Throughout time, these stories develop themes and ideas that allow readers to discover their purpose. These versions let the audience envision the story from a newer perspective. Modified versions reveal the underlying cause of the storyline and its characters. It is clear that "The Little Glass Slipper" published by Charles Perrault in 1697 and "Cinderella" published by Brothers Grimm in 1812, display the overall modification of the main idea. Within both tales these themes can be represented through the change in time, the overall plot and character development. The newer purpose of modified stories is demonstrated in "Cinderella". The fairytale originated from the story, "The Little Glass Slipper," which was written by Charles Perrault. The original tale was reformed through the Brothers Grimm version, otherwise known as "Cinderella". When analyzing the tales, the reader notices that each story has its own moral, ending and plot. Both the 1697 and the 1812 versions results in a new ending .The original tale concludes with kindness overruling beauty. The second version concludes with the stepsisters being punished for their actions. The moral of Perrault's version describes Cinderella's kindness to overrule the cruelness of society. The newer versions such as the Brothers Grimm tale display a differing moral, which is that an individual's misbehavior will be punished. These endings allow readers to ... These stories typically display the hero as a male who potentially saves the heroine. Throughout time, these stories develop themes and ideas that allow readers to discover its true purpose. These versions let the audience envision the story in a new perspective. From the development of time, readers notice the shift of heroism from male characters toward female characters.
