Kin Selection
1. The author wants to test the benefits of kin selection. In a recent study by Martin Smith &
Armstrong, it states that dominant individuals can move to where there are abundant food
opportunities. In addition to a study done by Armstrong et al, states that the behaviour of the
subordinate is dictated by the distribution and behaviour of the dominant individual (Armstrong &
Griffiths, 2002). Also, a study done by Quinn & Busack, stated that many species such as salmon,
rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon used cues to recognize and associate with their kins because of
their own preference. These studies enhance their importance of their study of determining if kinship
can increase inclusive fitness advantages.

Two larvae were provided to feeding patch 2 and one larvae was provided to either patch 1 or 3
away from the subordinate fish to test pairs if kin fish share food greater than pairs of non–kin.
Weight is measured after 12 days.
After measurement, two pairs of fish and only the smallest subordinate fish were returned to
compare behaviour with and without the dominant kin and non–kin.
4. In figure 1, it shows the time spent in each patch and results show that time spent varied
drastically between each patch. Overall, the longest time spend was in patch 2, where there was the
greatest food supply. In addition, in patch 2, related fishes spend more time than unrelated ones,
further confirming that kinship was significant. In figure 2, the percentage of foraging was lower
than non–kin meaning that the food was greatly shared between the kin pair than the non–kin. This
figure shows that subordinated ingested more larvae when paired with kin than non–kin. In figure 3,
without the dominant, subordinate spent more time in the best feeding patch and they increased food
sharing with the dominant kin and increased foraging benefits the dominant kin fish was absent in
comparison to when the non–kin dominant was absent. In figure 4, over a period of 3 days, results
show that subordinate kin fishes that we paired with dominant kin fishes spend more time in these
patches and slowly increased their food intake compared to those non–kin pairs when dominant is
absent. Overall, subordinates gained kin advantages such as an increase in food intake and food
sharing when paired with a relative. In addition, it shows that even with the kin dominant fish
present, foraging and food intake were higher in the pair of kin fishes than those in

Analysis Of The Snap Fitness Industry
Today, people are focused on living and eating for a healthier lifestyle. One of the fastest growing
businesses in the United States is the health industry. Business owners are investing and purchasing
fitness franchises that offer low–cost membership as well as convenient hours. Snap Fitness is one
of those franchises that have over 1,400 locations worldwide. One of the reasons that Snap Fitness
would be beneficial to invest in and also to purchase is because it is a growing industry.
"Economically, the health club industry has proven to be recession–proof, as health–minded
consumers continue to look for a high–quality workout solution that provides the best value for their
buck." (Snap Fitness, 2015) Snap Fitness provides an in–house ... Show more content on

The CVP deals with how the changes in fixed costs, variable costs, and the selling price (per unit)
for Snap Fitness affect the operating profit. CVP makes the supposition that all costs are either fixed
or variable. The CVP presumes the fixed costs, the variable costs, and the sales price per unit are
constant too. Additionally the CVP theorizes the selling of all products produced. The basic formula
used in CVP is: price per unit multiplied by the entire number of units produced and sold is equal to
variable costs per unit multiplied by the quantity of units sold and produced plus the fixed cost plus
profit. The contribution margin is the amount that sales exceed variable costs. The unit contribution
margin ratio is the amount that sales excess sales per unit minus the variable cost per unit.
With Snap Fitness, the fixed expenses are $6,000. The company must sell 300 memberships at $26
each to meet the break–even point. The calculation is 300 times $26. The total of the company's
costs is then $7,800 for a month. The costs, minus the fixed costs give the result of the variable costs
per month of $1800. With such information, a table can represent the calculations mentioned that
includes the information from Snap Fitness. Table 1 shows the CVP analysis for Snap Fitness,
including the Contribution margin, variable cost, and other relevant data necessary.

Natural Selection Lab Report
Evolution and Natural Selection; The benefits of Mutation
Areeba Yousuf
Introduction Charles Darwin, a naturalist around the 1800's , discovered the theory of evolution. He
discovered this observation of evolution with his voyages around the world. The specific animals
that proved Darwin 's theory were the finches he discovered in South America, and then found many
variations at many different places. He studies these finches in depth and discovered that they were
similar yet somehow different; the first indicator being their beaks. Darwin slowly understood that
the reason as to why there were different formation of beaks for the fiches was because of the
environment and the food source they found there. This is how the "Tree of ... Show more content

Eventually, this trait will be passed onto generations forward.
Evolution and the process of natural selection happen over a long period of time. In order to explore
the evolution of species adapting to the their environment, in this case, the species being beetles, the
purpose of this lab was to investigate evolution of beetles as they adapt to their different colored
environments and to see how favorable traits are passed off to offspring in relation to the survival
rate of the beetle's species.
This experiment would successfully prove Darwin's five step natural selection process:
"To summarise Darwin 's Theory of Evolution;
1. Variation: There is Variation in Every Population.
2. Competition: Organisms Compete for limited resources.
3. Offspring: Organisms produce more Offspring than can survive.
4. Genetics: Organisms pass Genetic traits on to their offspring.
5. Natural Selection: Those organisms with the Most Beneficial Traits are more likely to Survive
and Reproduce." (The Theory of Evolution; Charles Darwin,2012)
The hypothesis is that if more mutation that leads to variation in the population of beetles is an
advantage then the resulting offspring would carry on the favorable genes, causing increase in the
population's fitness and survival rate.

Similarly, in case of 6, the money is realized after long 6 months. For better trade credit
management, it is obviously desirable to realize the money as soon as possible because the money
which is blocked in the debtors has a cost of interest attached to it whose driver is 'Time'. If time to
realize the money from debtors is more, the cost is also higher and vice versa. Low debtor's turnover
ratio directly insists on higher working capital requirements and therefore higher interest cost which
decreases profits of the firm. CURRENT RATIO ANALYSIS Current ratio is a critical liquidity

Although some years the value did decrease by a few percent, in 2012 the gross profit margin is the
highest it has ever been since the fruition of the business.
Net Profit Margin o In summary this analysis shows the percent of every dollar in sales that is profit.
As seen in Figure 1, in the Appendix, the boxes highlighted in red showcase the net profit margin
values. From 2007 lululemon has had growth in their net profit margin, which in summary
showcases their ability to be an efficient business resulting in increased profitability. From 2007,
with a net profit margin of 5% to a current net profit margin of 18% in 2012, lululemon is
essentially making $0.18 profit for every dollar in revenue.
Key Conclusions
Based off lululemon's comprehensive financial data, it shows continuous growth and stability in
revenue and profits. This fused with effective cost controlling measures allow for greater
profitability year–to–year. With lululemon's strategy primarily focusing on growing the store base
and filling those stores with differentiated products, it puts emphasis towards capital expenditures
being made by the organization. It can be assumed heavy efforts are being placed on Research and
Development, which adhere to luluemon's strategy of developing next generation fabrics that make
their products superior to competition.
Additional research would be toward the site selection of future lululemon corporate owned stores.

The Gym, As a Social Scene Essay
Although fitness centers and gyms may appear to be a place to break a sweat and work out with the
intention of not being seen without makeup and in grungy clothes, this may not be the case, in
particular when it comes to college gyms. Contrary to the findings Tamara L. Black displayed in her
dissertation for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology from the University of California in
Los Angeles, in which she depicts the situation of the classical fitness center as exercise dominated,
after observations made while participating in the Boston College Recreational Complex, fitness
centers may be more heavily focused on expressing sexual and social relations than for health
related issues. Although she does not elaborate on this view ... Show more content on

75). Clearly the gym is capable of being an extremely gendered institution where females and males
are expected to look and play a certain role. The gym, in this case, has become more about
portraying an image, than actually working out and bettering ones self. The image being displayed,
for women tends to be based around sexuality and putting one's body on display, where as men are
depicted as being muscular, cut, and fat–free. While observing the situation at the Boston College
gym, several behaviors stuck out as portrayals of creating different definitions for the particular
situation. Highly gender–separated, there were no girls in one section of the gym, and no men in
another section of the gym. The elliptical section was completely women dominated, where as men

place for both sexes to workout while looking seemingly comfortable, the mats. Girls on the

The Merger Of Planet Fitness (YMCA)
Planet Fitness and YMCA are one of the two biggest fitness gyms in the nation today; a merger of
these two companies can create a gym powerhouse. The merger of these two groups can also create
conflict because of the two groups' different ideas and views on certain areas of their business. To
keep the peace between the two groups we must be willing to work together and share ideas and
communicate with each other. Team development may sound easy, but conflict always arises
somewhere within the planning. To deal with these, we must listen to all concerns and comments
and we must make a plan that everyone is apart of and that everyone will agree upon. We want the
merger of these two companies to be a better version of Planet Fitness and YMCA. ... Show more

Since the YMCA is a nonprofit organization, the merger must confirm to the state statutory
requirements that govern a charitable corporation. These requirements include the names of the
organizations involved, the purpose of the resulting organization, the terms and conditions of the
merger, the articles of the surviving organization, and the effective date. These documents must be
filed with the state secretary to certify that the charitable purposes will be maintained by the new
organization. (Jenkins, 2001) Another barrier would be the merging of the brands. There are
different strategies for merging brands for organizations. One is to utilize both the names and the
visual identities of the dominate organization. That would mean that all YMCAs would become
Planet Fitness, because it has a larger customer base and more physical locations. It also suggests
that there might be job loss for some employees and YMCA lose their foothold in the community.
Another strategy is that both companies continue to exist independently and work under one board
of directors. This strategy would ensure that all lower level employees of both companies could
possibly maintain employment in the positions they currently hold. The last strategy would be that
both organizations give up their names and logos to form a new identity. This would be the least
favorable of the three. This would mean both

The SAQ Model Of Soccer
Many sports require a deal of speed, agility, and quickness (SAQ) to achieve great levels of
performance. Soccer is one of those sports where players perform numerous actions that require
strength, power, speed, agility, balance, stability, flexibility, and endurance (Milanović et al., 2014).
To understand the proper way to train soccer players in these areas, one must understand the
difference of each component to develop a concrete training program. Speed should be viewed as
how fast you can move/operate both the upper and lower body during a single move. Agility is the
ability to change direction both quickly and effectively, and quickness is defined as the rapid
response to one's overall body awareness. Knowing the definition of each component of the SAQ
model, will provide great understanding on what section of the model should be addressed first.

With speed being a primary element of fitness for soccer players, developing the proper types of
speed is important. In soccer, developing both acceleration and linear speed is significant in the first
few steps. According to research, sprints in soccer are mainly performed over short distances,
involving repeated acceleration up and down the field (Milinkovic, Sporiš, Trajković, James, &
Šamija, 2013). This explains why various components of speed such as running speed, reaction
speed, and acceleration speed need development in soccer players. The next area of focus would be
quickness. Both speed and quickness go hand and hand in most sports especially soccer. When

The Growth And Growth Of The Uk Economy
Over the next five years UK economy is expected to see moderate to strong growth. Consumer
spending has been the main economic driver over the past three years, driven by rapid employment
growth, a falling household savings rate and supported by continually strong real estate market. This
trend is expected to persist in the shorter turn, helped by low inflation that is boosting real income
growth and continued historically low mortgage rates.
Despite medium term expectations that real consumer growth will moderate from 2.4% to 2% per
annum in 2017–2020 due to slower employment growth and a gradual rise in inflation, we do not
envisage this to have a big effect within central London, where unemployment rates are low and real

4 Industry Analysis
The health and fitness industry faced challenging economic conditions in 2010–11. As a result some
gym goers had to cancel their memberships or opt to exercise independently at no cost. Others
switched to exercise at the budget gyms, which do not require long–term contracts and charge less
for their very basic services. As a result a number of gyms have seen sharp decline in membership
numbers, whilst newer budget operators have benefited from that. There are also signs that
traditional full spectrum gyms have suffered over the past five years as consumer preferences shifted
towards boutique studios, personal training and boot camp style operators.
The industry is expected perform better in the next five years. Demand for gyms is expected to
improve as healthier consumer sentiment encourages people to spend more freely on fitness
activities. Furthermore, growing awareness of the merits of regular exercise will continue to benefit
the industry as a whole. Consumer preferences will continue to shift towards

can lead to a lucrative career. Although many associate running with maximal aerobic power, there
are other factors affected by the introduction of endurance exercise. With the use of running, various

services, a trend has emerged for extended trading hours for service organizations. One of the main
profiteers of this trend is gym franchises. With over 1 billion people in the global population being

Jetts has received a Canstar award two years running. For the years of 2012 and 2013, Jetts was
voted as the No.1 gym chain in Australia for customer satisfaction. (Jetts, 2014)
Another similarly competitive gym is Stepz. As well as operating 24/7, Stepz is entirely Australia
owned, with clubs only within Australia. While this, to some people, would be a selling point, it also
poses a threat to Stepz whereby is creates less convenience for its patrons by having fewer clubs
members can attend (see figure 1.2). (Stepz, 2014)
A Stepz Memberships costs $13 a week, with a one–off joining fee of $89, payable upfront and an
access card fee of $55, with which the member has access to any Stepz club Australia–wide. (Stepz,
2014)
As too with Jetts, Stepz has no membership perks for gym members that exist outside the gym, i.e.,
retail discounts, etc.
Stepz employs a tactic whereby the number of members allowed to enrol in each club is limited.
This is done to provide the members with a more personalized service, and the staff can cater to the
members needs more specifically. Also, by limiting the number of patrons, it ensures that there will
rarely be a wait time to use gym equipment. (Stepz, 2014)
In today's market, there exist other types of rival services in the gym racket. Not gyms that offer
round–the–clock service, rather gyms that cater specifically to the specialty needs of their patrons –
gyms such as

Introduction
Kindness is the one notion that can be understood throughout time and across all cultures and
languages. To be altruistic in the modern–day world is to show selfless concern for the welfare of
others. Many consider such a characteristic to be immeasurable, but leaps in science and math have
begun to show otherwise. This was really intriguing, as I had never even considered the possibility
of developing a mathematical basis for altruism. As my CAS project, I founded a Random Acts of
Kindness club to promote giving in my school and local community. The idea of being able to ...

The players' choices are interrelated, so the outcome depends on both parties involved (Myerson).
This theory can be applied in a public goods experiment that dealt with a situation of making
decisions for either self or group interest. In the study, participants were placed into groups of four
and each given 20 money units (MUs). They had the choice of contributing between 0 to 20 MUs to
the group for a specified number of rounds. Their choice was only revealed to the other members of
the experiment after everyone has chosen at the end of each round (Fowler and Nicholas).
For the purpose of this paper, I will present a simplified version of this experiment modified for two
participants to show the logic behind game theory, which will determine the supposed outcome of
the experiment. The basic model serves the general purpose of demonstrating how the most
beneficial scenario is to always look out for one's own interests. In this case, the players have two
choices; donate their money, which would take away from their own pleasure, or keep it. Suppose
both are male participants. Each is assigned 1 monetary unit (MU) for the one–turn game;
If both participants keep their money, each ends up with his original amount (1MU). If only one
participant donates, he loses everything (0 MU). On the other hand, the other

Introduction
Sexual conflict, the conflict between the evolutionary interests of individuals of the two sexes, is
recognized as a pertinent factor for adaptation. Traits of one sex that reduce the fitness of the other
sex ultimately inflicts antagonistic selection on that sex to evolve to counteract this cost. For
example, sexual conflicts can arise over traits like mating duration, where the two sexes adapt and
counter–adapt in order for each sex to achieve its ideal fitness levels. However, the fact that
adaptations have effects on other fitness components suggests that the detection of sexual conflicts
on individual traits can be complicated. The bean beetle Callosobruchus maculatus is a prime
example of sexual conflict and is widely considered a model organism to scientists for its ability to
represent how mating behavior influences biological processes such as reproduction. The model
organism dedicates its short life span to mating and laying eggs on beans, thereby enabling scientists
to use the beetles for experimentation. Two of C. maculatus' populations are Burkina Faso (BF),
originating from Africa, and Southern India (SI), originating from Asia. The geographic differences
these populations encounter ultimately impact their reproduction

Galaxy Sports Inc. is a manufacturer of sports equipment. It is a public company with three
reporting units: Fitness Equipment, Golf Equipment, and Hockey Equipment. During our audit,
certain accounting treatments by Galaxy regarding goodwill impairment were found to possibly
contradict with the Accounting Standard Codification. Based on my research of the ASC, my
recommendations are that management should perform an interim goodwill impairment test at the
end of third quarter of fiscal year 2009; and that management should not carry forward the 09
goodwill impairment test for Fitness ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is reasonable to say that fair value of reporting units have fallen significantly in pace with market
capitalization, and it has possibly fallen below book value of the reporting units. Therefore, above
analysis raises substantial doubt on management's action to carry forward the 09 fair values of
Fitness and Hockey. They should not carry forward the previous fair value estimates and should
revalue Fitness and Hockey for 2010.
Another argument refuting the decision to carry forward 2009 values finds its root in the ASC.
According to ASC 350–20–35–29, only when all of the three criteria below are met may a company
carry forward fair value determinations. The criteria are: a) assets and liabilities of the unit should
not have changed significantly. Hockey and Fitness seem to meet this criterion. b) The last fair value
determination of the unit should be substantially larger than their carrying amount at the time.
Hockey and Fitness meet this criterion. c) The likelihood that the current fair value is less than the
carrying amount should be low4. Hockey and Fitness's current fair value is possibly less than their
carrying amount, not meeting this criterion. Because not all of the criteria for a fair value carry
forward are met, the fair value of Hockey and Fitness may not be carried forward from 09.
It is important to note the limitations of the analysis. First, fair value estimates are subject to
professional judgment and errors

Nike
SHORT CASE SUMMARY Nike, Inc. (503–671–6453, www.nike.com) is the worlds #1 athletic
shoe and apparel seller. Nike currently employs 20,700 employees, with total sales of $8.78 billion.
Nike and the athletic shoe industry have evolved into one of the most competitive market in recent
years. But, analysts believe that athletic shoe sales will slow down over the next few years. The
slowdown will come with the change in consumer trends. For instance, the younger market is
beginning to buy more casual shoes and work boots. Another reason for the slowdown is that people
are buying more medium priced athletic shoes and not going for the high price brand name shoes.
As a result, this is bringing Nike a lot more competition to surpass. In order ... Show more content

Fitbit Inc.
Fitbit Inc. was founded in 2007 by James Park and Eric Friedman, who had a vision to use
technology to help others become more active and live healthier lives (Fitbit, n.d.). Their vision has
manifested itself in the creation of several wearable activity trackers that record the users' number of
steps taken, distance travelled, calories burned and a myriad of additional data points. Wireless
technology enables this data to be viewed on each user's mobile phone, laptop or any device that can
sync with the tracker. Data can be viewed as daily, weekly, monthly or annual summaries that allow
users to see patterns or trends in their activity. This can be a powerful tool for users to gain

They are constantly checking their trackers and logging in to the website to check their progress
against that of their friends. This can lead to a person only walking or running to increase their step
counts and not diversifying their activities with strength building or other activities, which are also
important and healthy for the body. Fleming (2015) explains that there is also a chance that the
numbers displayed by the Fitbit device are not always completely accurate. Some users have found
that the number of calories they are actually burning could be less than the Fitbit tracker shows.
Urist (2014) reports that another possibility is that the type of calories, the time of day they are
consumed or the metabolic rate of a specific person are things that Fitbit trackers really cannot
identify at this time, so the calories in/calories out system does not always reflect reality. Because of
these reasons, Hernandez (2014) reports that some users have claimed that they have actually gained
weight after they started wearing a fitness tracker. In addition, Raskin (2014) explains that many
fitness trackers mainly just measure movement and cannot differentiate between activities like
lifting weights or hiking up a mountain, so users would basically just get credit for taking steps
when in reality their bodies were working much harder and burning more calories

BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW
Bally Total Fitness was created in 1996 with Lee Hillman as its first CEO. Bally traces its existence
to the Health and Tennis Corporation, run by Dave Wildman. Wildman had begun to purchase ailing
gyms and aggressively expanded and acquired several other brands as well. In the 1990s, as part of a
diversification move, Bally Manufacturing, a gambling equipment company, decided to purchase
Wildman's collection of gyms and other brands. This diversification of brands created what was
known as Bally Entertainment. Bally Total Fitness was then created in 1996 as the health club

nutritional supplements and meal–replacement items. This demonstrates how Bally is trying to relate

The Competitive Sector Of The Retail Industry
The retail industry is one of the most competitive sectors of the business arena. With demands from
the public came the large amount of choices of retailers. Wal–Mart, Target, Tilly's, and Forever21are
just some of the options for customers and all of these are tailored to the high demands. One
segment of the retail industry is sporting goods and there is also a large amount of competition in
this aspect. Companies such as Adidas, Nike, Reebok, Converse, and New Balance appear to have
dominated the market. Conversely, there is one retailer that seemed to have been catapulted into
success is the company known as Under Armour which became a leader in the sporting goods aspect
of the retail industry. The company has become one of the leading retail outlets in America. Under

sporting goods that performed. The merchandise was to be used by athletes to keep them dry and
comfortable during a practice or a workout. The plan was rather basic with the start of a t–shirt and
it was a huge success propelling them into a segment that the founder had no idea existed. There was
a need for what was offered; functional clothing. In 2005, changed its name from KP Sports to

The purpose of this study was to understand the process of natural selection through a simulation

Rival's Phenotypes
INTRODUCTION
This research article explores the genetic variation of attractiveness traits when strong sexual
selection led to the dissemination of the rival's phenotype (Janif et al. 2014). Preference for an
uncommon secondary sexual trait can bring negative frequency–dependent selection to bear the
genetic variation among species. Previous studies have shown that rare traits have an advantage over
other individuals from the same species, because it does intensify and promote the mating process.
Humans have traits that can be manipulated to attract the opposite sex. For instance, males' facial
hair can be groom or removed to enhance attractiveness of their facial hair (Janif et al. 2014).

Miss America Pageant Analysis
Miss America, National Identity, and the Identity Politics of Whiteness by Sarah Banet Wieser and
The Patriotic American is a Thin American: Fatness and National Identity in the Biggest Loser by
Cassandra L. Jones tease out the intricate relationship between beauty, race and citizenship through
the analysis of two popular beauty and fitness competitions the United States, the Miss America
pageant and The Biggest Loser television show. Both argue that the contestants, particularly the
winners, are consciously constructed manifestations of the ideal American citizen based on their
physical appearances and the conditions for citizenship that those appearances connote. While these
pieces do important work in the analysis of the nationally recognizable winners of these
competitions as embodiments of the ideals of race, physical fitness and attractiveness within the
ideal American citizen, they both fall short in one area that is crucial to the foundations of race,
beauty and citizenship: class. Banet–Weiser's analysis of the Miss America pageant, specifically the
1945 winner Bess Myerson, and the 1995 winner, Heather Whitestone, concludes that the pageant is
the site of racialized and gendered national identity, in which moments like the crowning of these
women, contribute to a broader national politics that consolidates whiteness as a dominant
ideology (Banet– Weiser, 68). Thus, as representations of who and what American women, who

Fitness and muscle model athletes are often benchmarked as the embodiment of physical perfection
(Sundgot–Borgen et al., 2011). That being said, not all athletes have, or believe that they have,
bodies adapted to the paradigm of their specific sport (Sundgot–Borgen et al., 2011). These athletes
may often experience pressure to achieve this absolute ideal body type. Athletes competing in
aesthetic sports such as gymnasts, figure skaters, divers, bodybuilders experience greater pressure to
reduce weight than athletes competing in sports in which lean body mass aesthetic are less important
(Drinkwater et al., 2005). Within this class of athletes judged on aestheticism, fitness and muscle
models are a class whom are noted for dieting down to extremely low level of body fat to display
muscle. There appears to be a rise in competitive fitness and muscle model shows and the goal to
emulate if not a sporting aesthetic which will appeal domestically and commercially. (Scott et al.,
2013).
As a result of growing interest in this field of sport, there are few federations/organizations that are

Destination Fitness, like most new businesses, will face a variety of economic issues. Whether it's
from internal weaknesses of the organization or external threats to the company, the organization
must be prepared to overcome these obstacles. One of the biggest external threats to the economic
success of Destination Fitness it the economy itself. Although the economy is steadily recovering
from the recession, disposable income still comes at a premium for many people. In order to
convince customers to become members they must, first and foremost, make it financially attractive
to them. Keeping membership costs low will entice new customers through the door. After that it is
up to the staff to make customers realize that their biggest investment should be to invest in their
own health and well being. Another threat that Destination Fitness faces is the time constraints many
drivers have. In order to meet there deadlines drivers have little time other than to sleep. In order to
combat this, programs that are offered must utilize time efficiently and be able to bring results
within strict time limits. This will also allow the trainers to assist more people and really give the
customers the sense that Destination Fitness truly cares about their health, happiness, and livelihood.
Legal/Regulatory It will be essential for Destination Fitness to determine the legal structure of

Berguland Hypothesis
This article discussed the nature of mating choices in between male and ornamented female
pipefish. Berglund and colleagues wanted to demonstrate if there was a relationship between
ornamented females and fitness. Berguland is involved with the Department of Ecology and
Genetics with a focus on Animal Ecology at Uppsala University. Berguland hypothesized that
female pipefish with ornamentation would have higher success mating with males. To test his
hypothesis, he conducted an experiment that compared separated females with different
ornamentation from males and removed barriers placed to observe how competition between the
two females impacted results. Although this was a good start to test his hypothesis Berguland
realized that he would also need to test behavior that may have included the male's decision such as
dancing. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To do this, he had two female pipefish sedated in a tank with different ornamentation that were
moved with a motor in the same pattern or dance. He found that although both females were moving
in the same way, the males still preferred to mate with the female that had ornamentation. The
original hypothesis was supported because he observed that males preferred ornamented females
despite color and behavior which is demonstrated in figure 4 on day 2. This finding is important
because often these roles are reversed, and males are more likely to compete for females. This is one
of the first studies conducted to ever test male preference due to female ornamentation. Future
researchers will be able to use these results to have a better understanding of sex role reversed
species and to see how this impacts sexual selection and variation in genetics. Even if the sex roles
are reversed it is clear that this selection is driving

In a recent study by Martin Smith & Armstrong, it states that dominant individuals can move to where there are abundant food opportunities. In addition to a study done by Armstrong et al, states that the behaviour of the subordinate is dictated by the distribution and behaviour of the dominant individual (Armstrong & Griffiths, 2002). Also, a study done by Quinn & Busack, stated that many species such as salmon, rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon used cues to recognize and associate with their kins because of their own preference. These studies enhance their importance of their study of determining if kinship can increase inclusive fitness advantages. 2. The two main purpose of this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Two larvae were provided to feeding patch 2 and one larvae was provided to either patch 1 or 3 away from the subordinate fish to test pairs if kin fish share food greater than pairs of non–kin. Weight is measured after 12 days. After measurement, two pairs of fish and only the smallest subordinate fish were returned to compare behaviour with and without the dominant kin and non–kin. 4. In figure 1, it shows the time spent in each patch and results show that time spent varied drastically between each patch. Overall, the longest time spend was in patch 2, where there was the greatest food supply. In addition, in patch 2, related fishes spend more time than unrelated ones, further confirming that kinship was significant. In figure 2, the percentage of foraging was lower than non–kin meaning that the food was greatly shared between the kin pair than the non–kin. This figure shows that subordinated ingested more larvae when paired with kin than non–kin. In figure 3, without the dominant, subordinate spent more time in the best feeding patch and they increased food sharing with the dominant kin and increased foraging benefits the dominant kin fish was absent in comparison to when the non–kin dominant was absent. In figure 4, over a period of 3 days, results show that subordinate kin fishes that we paired with dominant kin fishes spend more time in these patches and slowly increased their food intake compared to those non–kin pairs when dominant is absent. Overall, subordinates gained kin advantages such as an increase in food intake and food sharing when paired with a relative. In addition, it shows that even with the kin dominant fish present, foraging and food intake were higher in the pair of kin fishes than those in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One of the fastest growing businesses in the United States is the health industry. One of the reasons that Snap Fitness would be beneficial to invest in and also to purchase is because it is a growing industry. The CVP deals with how the changes in fixed costs, variable costs, and the selling price (per unit) for Snap Fitness affect the operating profit. CVP makes the supposition that all costs are either fixed or variable. The CVP presumes the fixed costs, the variable costs, and the sales price per unit are constant too. Additionally the CVP theorizes the selling of all products produced. The basic formula used in CVP is: price per unit multiplied by the entire number of units produced and sold is equal to variable costs per unit multiplied by the quantity of units sold and produced plus the fixed cost plus profit. The contribution margin is the amount that sales exceed variable costs. The unit contribution margin ratio is the amount that sales excess sales per unit minus the variable cost per unit. With Snap Fitness, the fixed expenses are $6,000. The company must sell 300 memberships at $26 each to meet the break–even point. The calculation is 300 times $26. The total of the company's costs is then $7,800 for a month. The costs, minus the fixed costs give the result of the variable costs per month of $1800. With such information, a table can represent the calculations mentioned that includes the information from Snap Fitness. Natural Selection Lab Report Evolution and Natural Selection; The benefits of Mutation Areeba Yousuf Introduction Charles Darwin, a naturalist around the 1800's , discovered the theory of evolution. He discovered this observation of evolution with his voyages around the world. The specific animals that proved Darwin 's theory were the finches he discovered in South America, and then found many variations at many different places. He studies these finches in depth and discovered that they were similar yet somehow different; the first indicator being their beaks. Darwin slowly understood that the reason as to why there were different formation of beaks for the fiches was because of the environment and the food source they found there. This is how the "Tree of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eventually, this trait will be passed onto generations forward. Evolution and the process of natural selection happen over a long period of time. In order to explore the evolution of species adapting to the their environment, in this case, the species being beetles, the purpose of this lab was to investigate evolution of beetles as they adapt to their different colored environments and to see how favorable traits are passed off to offspring in relation to the survival rate of the beetle's species. This experiment would successfully prove Darwin's five step natural selection process: "To summarise Darwin 's Theory of Evolution; 1. Variation: There is Variation in Every Population. 2. Competition: Organisms Compete for limited resources. 3. Offspring: Organisms produce more Offspring than can survive. 4. Genetics: Organisms pass Genetic traits on to their offspring. 5. Natural Selection: Those organisms with the Most Beneficial Traits are more likely to Survive and Reproduce." (The Theory of Evolution; Charles Darwin,2012) The hypothesis is that if more mutation that leads to variation in the population of beetles is an advantage then the resulting offspring would carry on the favorable genes, causing increase in the population's fitness and survival rate. These requirements include the names of the organizations involved, the purpose of the resulting organization, the terms and conditions of the merger, the articles of the surviving organization, and the effective date. These documents must be filed with the state secretary to certify that the charitable purposes will be maintained by the new organization. (Jenkins, 2001) Another barrier would be the merging of the brands. There are different strategies for merging brands for organizations. One is to utilize both the names and the visual identities of the dominate organization. That would mean that all YMCAs would become Planet Fitness, because it has a larger customer base and more physical locations. It also suggests that there might be job loss for some employees and YMCA lose their foothold in the community. Another strategy is that both companies continue to exist independently and work under one board of directors. This strategy would ensure that all lower level employees of both companies could possibly maintain employment in the positions they currently hold. The last strategy would be that both organizations give up their names and logos to form a new identity. This would be the least favorable of the three. This would mean both ... • 26. The SAQ Model Of Soccer Many sports require a deal of speed, agility, and quickness (SAQ) to achieve great levels of performance. Soccer is one of those sports where players perform numerous actions that require strength, power, speed, agility, balance, stability, flexibility, and endurance (Milanović et al., 2014). To understand the proper way to train soccer players in these areas, one must understand the difference of each component to develop a concrete training program. Speed should be viewed as how fast you can move/operate both the upper and lower body during a single move. Agility is the ability to change direction both quickly and effectively, and quickness is defined as the rapid response to one's overall body awareness. Knowing the definition of each component of the SAQ model, will provide great understanding on what section of the model should be addressed first. With soccer ... In soccer, developing both acceleration and linear speed is significant in the first few steps. According to research, sprints in soccer are mainly performed over short distances, involving repeated acceleration up and down the field (Milinkovic, Sporiš, Trajković, James, & Šamija, 2013). This explains why various components of speed such as running speed, reaction speed, and acceleration speed need development in soccer players. The next area of focus would be quickness. Consumer spending has been the main economic driver over the past three years, driven by rapid employment growth, a falling household savings rate and supported by continually strong real estate market. This trend is expected to persist in the shorter turn, helped by low inflation that is boosting real income growth and continued historically low mortgage rates. Despite medium term expectations that real consumer growth will moderate from 2.4% to 2% per annum in 2017–2020 due to slower employment growth and a gradual rise in inflation, we do not envisage this to have a big effect within central London, where unemployment rates are low and real incomes are ... Others switched to exercise at the budget gyms, which do not require long–term contracts and charge less for their very basic services. As a result a number of gyms have seen sharp decline in membership numbers, whilst newer budget operators have benefited from that. There are also signs that traditional full spectrum gyms have suffered over the past five years as consumer preferences shifted towards boutique studios, personal training and boot camp style operators. The industry is expected perform better in the next five years. Demand for gyms is expected to improve as healthier consumer sentiment encourages people to spend more freely on fitness activities. As well as operating 24/7, Stepz is entirely Australia owned, with clubs only within Australia. While this, to some people, would be a selling point, it also poses a threat to Stepz whereby is creates less convenience for its patrons by having fewer clubs members can attend (see figure 1.2). (Stepz, 2014) A Stepz Memberships costs $13 a week, with a one–off joining fee of $89, payable upfront and an access card fee of $55, with which the member has access to any Stepz club Australia–wide. This is done to provide the members with a more personalized service, and the staff can cater to the members needs more specifically. Also, by limiting the number of patrons, it ensures that there will rarely be a wait time to use gym equipment. To be altruistic in the modern–day world is to show selfless concern for the welfare of others. Many consider such a characteristic to be immeasurable, but leaps in science and math have begun to show otherwise. The players' choices are interrelated, so the outcome depends on both parties involved (Myerson). This theory can be applied in a public goods experiment that dealt with a situation of making decisions for either self or group interest. In the study, participants were placed into groups of four and each given 20 money units (MUs). They had the choice of contributing between 0 to 20 MUs to the group for a specified number of rounds. Their choice was only revealed to the other members of the experiment after everyone has chosen at the end of each round (Fowler and Nicholas). For the purpose of this paper, I will present a simplified version of this experiment modified for two participants to show the logic behind game theory, which will determine the supposed outcome of the experiment. The basic model serves the general purpose of demonstrating how the most beneficial scenario is to always look out for one's own interests. In this case, the players have two choices; donate their money, which would take away from their own pleasure, or keep it. Suppose both are male participants. Effects Of Male Competition On Mating Behavior Vassar College The Effects of Male Competition on Mating Behavior in Burkina Faso and Southern India Populations of Callosobruchus maculatus Rachel Chernet Biology 106–01 Professor Czesak Thursday, November 10, 2016 Introduction Sexual conflict, the conflict between the evolutionary interests of individuals of the two sexes, is recognized as a pertinent factor for adaptation. Traits of one sex that reduce the fitness of the other sex ultimately inflicts antagonistic selection on that sex to evolve to counteract this cost. For example, sexual conflicts can arise over traits like mating duration, where the two sexes adapt and counter–adapt in order for each sex to achieve its ideal fitness levels. However, the fact that adaptations have effects on other fitness components suggests that the detection of sexual conflicts on individual traits can be complicated. The bean beetle Callosobruchus maculatus is a prime example of sexual conflict and is widely considered a model organism to scientists for its ability to represent how mating behavior influences biological processes such as reproduction. The model organism dedicates its short life span to mating and laying eggs on beans, thereby enabling scientists to use the beetles for experimentation. Two of C. maculatus' populations are Burkina Faso (BF), originating from Africa, and Southern India (SI), originating from Asia. It is reasonable to say that fair value of reporting units have fallen significantly in pace with market capitalization, and it has possibly fallen below book value of the reporting units. Therefore, above analysis raises substantial doubt on management's action to carry forward the 09 fair values of Fitness and Hockey. They should not carry forward the previous fair value estimates and should revalue Fitness and Hockey for 2010. Another argument refuting the decision to carry forward 2009 values finds its root in the ASC. According to ASC 350–20–35–29, only when all of the three criteria below are met may a company carry forward fair value determinations. The criteria are: a) assets and liabilities of the unit should not have changed significantly. Hockey and Fitness seem to meet this criterion. b) The last fair value determination of the unit should be substantially larger than their carrying amount at the time. Hockey and Fitness meet this criterion. c) The likelihood that the current fair value is less than the carrying amount should be low4. Hockey and Fitness's current fair value is possibly less than their carrying amount, not meeting this criterion. Because not all of the criteria for a fair value carry forward are met, the fair value of Hockey and Fitness may not be carried forward from 09. Abstract The purpose of this study was to understand the process of natural selection through a simulation involving competition of various preys and predators. In order to simulate natural selection, experimenters became predators and acted as a species of fork, spoon, knife, or fingers. Beans of four different phenotypes (white, green, black, and red) represented the prey. The predators hunted prey for 30 seconds three times–symbolizing three generations. The prey and predator survivors were doubled each generation to simulate reproduction. This experiment was done in an asphalt and sand environment. All data was recorded. Preference for an uncommon secondary sexual trait can bring negative frequency–dependent selection to bear the genetic variation among species. Previous studies have shown that rare traits have an advantage over other individuals from the same species, because it does intensify and promote the mating process. Humans have traits that can be manipulated to attract the opposite sex. For instance, males' facial hair can be groom or removed to enhance attractiveness of their facial hair (Janif et al. 2014). Miss America Pageant Analysis Miss America, National Identity, and the Identity Politics of Whiteness by Sarah Banet Wieser and The Patriotic American is a Thin American: Fatness and National Identity in the Biggest Loser by Cassandra L. Jones tease out the intricate relationship between beauty, race and citizenship through the analysis of two popular beauty and fitness competitions the United States, the Miss America pageant and The Biggest Loser television show. Both argue that the contestants, particularly the winners, are consciously constructed manifestations of the ideal American citizen based on their physical appearances and the conditions for citizenship that those appearances connote. While these pieces do important work in the analysis of the nationally recognizable winners of these competitions as embodiments of the ideals of race, physical fitness and attractiveness within the ideal American citizen, they both fall short in one area that is crucial to the foundations of race, beauty and citizenship: class. Banet–Weiser's analysis of the Miss America pageant, specifically the 1945 winner Bess Myerson, and the 1995 winner, Heather Whitestone, concludes that the pageant is the site of racialized and gendered national identity, in which moments like the crowning of these women, contribute to a broader national politics that consolidates whiteness as a dominant ideology (Banet– Weiser, 68). Thus, as representations of who and what American women, who have historically been used to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

That being said, not all athletes have, or believe that they have, bodies adapted to the paradigm of their specific sport (Sundgot–Borgen et al., 2011). These athletes may often experience pressure to achieve this absolute ideal body type. Athletes competing in aesthetic sports such as gymnasts, figure skaters, divers, bodybuilders experience greater pressure to reduce weight than athletes competing in sports in which lean body mass aesthetic are less important (Drinkwater et al., 2005). Within this class of athletes judged on aestheticism, fitness and muscle models are a class whom are noted for dieting down to extremely low level of body fat to display muscle. Berglund and colleagues wanted to demonstrate if there was a relationship between ornamented females and fitness. Berguland is involved with the Department of Ecology and Genetics with a focus on Animal Ecology at Uppsala University. Berguland hypothesized that female pipefish with ornamentation would have higher success mating with males. To test his hypothesis, he conducted an experiment that compared separated females with different ornamentation from males and removed barriers placed to observe how competition between the two females impacted results. Although this was a good start to test his hypothesis Berguland realized that he would also need to test behavior that may have included the male's decision such as dancing. ... He found that although both females were moving in the same way, the males still preferred to mate with the female that had ornamentation. The original hypothesis was supported because he observed that males preferred ornamented females despite color and behavior which is demonstrated in figure 4 on day 2. This finding is important because often these roles are reversed, and males are more likely to compete for females. This is one of the first studies conducted to ever test male preference due to female ornamentation. Future researchers will be able to use these results to have a better understanding of sex role reversed species and to see how this impacts sexual selection and variation in genetics. Even if the sex roles are reversed it is clear that this selection is driving ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
