2. FRONT COVER
I designed this magazine for both male and female readers, between
the ages of 16 and 24, who are either at Sixth Form of College, around
the Norwich area in particular.
To make this magazine appeal to this group of people in particular, I
have put a book in the models hand, to show that she is ready to learn, I
have also gotten her to wear a big jumper to look as though she is
outside studying.
I have gotten the model on a plan background so that she looks as
though she has been placed there but in fact the photograph was taken
like this, there was a flash on the camera but no other lighting in the
room, the photograph is a medium close up and is directly addressing
the audience, so that they feel connected with her and are more likely
to spot the magazine form afar.
The language that I have used is short and easy to read because
teenagers and young adults, don’t tend to like to read and prefer short
and snappy sentences or comments. The magazine is called Canvas
because it symbolises art and photography which are some of the
courses that the college offers to their students.
3. ASPECTS I AM PLEASED WITH
I am please with the whole of my front cover, because it was my first time using
all of the soft wear, and producing a front cover is a big step. I love the name
of my college magazine Canvas as it represents some of the courses that some
students are doing at Norwich City College. I also like the fact that the mast
head is in front of her head so you can see the whole mast head, but it does
not cover any part of the models face.
I also like the different fonts for the cover lines as it makes them stand out more
than they would if they were all the same colour and font, the colours bring
attention to the main part of the cover line and splits each cover line up into 3
parts.
I like the colours that I have used as they bring enough attention to the cover
lines, but don’t take to much attention away from the model, so I feel I have
found a good balance between the 2. I have tried to keep the colours the
same throughout the cover and also the contents page as you will see but, I
have thrown some other colours in as well like the 2 blue colours behind the
mast head and on the strap line to brake up the pink a little so it hopefully
incises the boys a bit more.
4. ASPECTS I WOULD WORK ON/ CHANGE
I am really please with my front cover but there are some things that I would
improve or change, for example, the image is blurred slightly so I would next
time use a better camera of take multiple shots of the model in the same
position so that I am more likely to get the clearest image possible.
I then looked back quite harshly at the colour scheme and I think that the
colours the model is wearing don’t go very well with the colours that I have
used and therefore next time I would have her wearing a dark blue colour to
go with the blue Canvas under the main mast head, as this wouldn’t then bring
to much attention away from the cover lines which have been made bright to
stand out from everything else on the front cover.
I looked at the cover for a very long time, and all I could see was the models
face, when I looked at the bright yellow cover lines, I saw her face and
couldn’t read them, so I wouldn’t change the colour because, I like the range
of colours used but, I would change the font. However I would leave the mast
head font the same and change the pink cover lines to the same font as the
mast head. I would change the yellow font to a serif font so it would make it
easier to read and would stand out more.

5. CONTENTS PAGE
I have kept with a similar theme on my contents page to my front cover
including the mast head to both pages but, the cover lines and folios on
the contents page I have tried to keep the similar colours to the mast
head but they are slightly different shades of pink and blue.
I created the contents page on In design which is a new piece of
software to me, I used three columns to create the look on this page and
I stuck to the columns very well and I also left the gutters blank to, so that
it make was made easier to read because, white space make sit easier
to read, without making mistakes.
To make this page appeal to both male and females in the age range of
16-24, I have used both pink and blue which are the stereotypical colours
for each sex, but both colours appeal to a lot of people, I have also used
stories and that are more likely to interest people in my target age range/
audience. I have used some colourful images to create interest in some
of the top stories and articles in on the contents page, such as; cars for
sale as you can get your driving license at 17 years old; the student union
fair as it is an introduction to the college; and the ccn logo to show which
students are targeted and where the magazine was made.
6. I am pleased with the mast head as it has been carried over from the front
cover, this means that the colours and the font are the same and haven’t
changed. I am also please with the layout of the page as the columns
separate out the text and the gutters allow white space between each of the
cover lines and folios making them easier to read. I have also used the Norwich
City College logo I like the way that I have used it because it shows who the
target audience is and where the magazine has been produced.

7. I would change the typeface of the text on the contents page, as it is a sans
serif font and the serif fonts make it easier to read. I wish I would have put the
pictures around the page more to brake up the large space of text on the
page, this could have incised more readers as people in the target audience
don’t like a lot of text as they are lazy readers, this would have allowed less text
on the page which would have benefited readers. I also feel that I shouldn’t
have written as much on the contents page but, should have used a bigger
font size to show off the cover lines and folios off more and made them stand
out. I also feel that I should have got the colours (pink and blue) to match
throughout the different sections of the page such as; the mast head, cover
lines and other text.
