5. The Hague summary
The Hague (Den Haag) is a city on the western coast of the Netherlands, and the capital of the province of
South Holland. With a population of 520,704 inhabitants (as of 1 April 2016) and more than one million
inhabitants including the suburbs, it is the third-largest city of the Netherlands, after Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
The Hague is the seat of the Dutch government, parliament, the Supreme Court, and the Council of State, but
the city is not the capital of the Netherlands, which constitutionally is Amsterdam.
Centrum (99,283 inhabitants) forms the heart of The Hague. The Binnenhof, the Noordeinde Palace, the
Mauritshuis museum, the Nieuwe Kerk, the Old City Hall and the current City Hall are located here.
Architecture varies from medieval up to 20th century.
Mauritshuis Museum
Today the building houses the top museum for 17th and 18th century art. Its collection includes some 800
works by a variety of artists.
Inner Court (Binnenhof)
Inner Court (Binnenhof) is an ancient complex buildings, inside there is a congress building, premier office and
all important departments of the government, is where the House of Representatives meets, where the Prime
Minister works and where the Ministers hold their weekly consultations. Once a year, the Senate and the
House of Representatives meet at the Knight Hall in a Joint Session of the States General. This is the core of
the political decision of the Netherlands Kingdom, and the one of the most watched architecture is the
completion of the 13th century Knight Hall. The open space of Inner Court is all freely open to the public.
Peace Palace (Vredespaleis)
Today the building is still used by the International Court of Justice. Would you like to visit the Peace Palace?
Tours are offered to groups of 20 people only a few times per year. The tours must be booked in advance. The
visitor’s center is opened every day, however, except on Mondays. You can discover an exhibition and movie
at the visitor’s center.
The Inner Court (Binnenhof) is a place you must-see if you're in The Hague. Take a stroll through the courtyard
and admire the fairytale-like splendor or take the time to take a tour through the various halls. You won’t be
disappointed!
