School Boards And School Board
At the local level a school district can be seen as a unicameral parliamentary system. School boards create education policy and appoint a superintendent
to execute those policies.Dissatisfaction Theory of Democracy holds the greatest explanatory potential in school board turnover (Alsbury, 2003).
Applying this theory to school boards, the theory states changes in a community 's values translates to changes in community participation. This then
leads to changes to school board members who share this new value. And finally the school board changes its policy to reflect the new values (Alsbury,
2003). Superintendents serve at the pleasure of the school board. Stream (2013) has argued that executive appointed officials change when new... Show

Also, principals usually score within the top 10% of teachers in their state teaching certification exams. Entry level administration salaries rival the
salaries of teachers with decades of experience teaching, thus encouraging many young teachers to leave the classroom (Baker & Punswick & Belt,
2010). Principals are more likely to leave positions at elementary or middle schools and pursue principalships at large high schools. Where a
principal receives their undergraduate degree has little effect on their salaries, but selectivity of their master 's degree program has a large effect on
pay and school demographics. Principals of schools with grater black student concentration are more likely to have principals who attended less
selective universities for their graduate degrees, and principals with graduate degrees from more selective universities that focus on research are more
likely to take principalships in non–black concentrated communities (Baker & Punswick & Belt, 2010). Superintendents rise through the educational
ranks, understanding what type of teachers undertake a principalship helps us understand some of the self–selection criteria superintendents possess.
Superintendents supersede principals and advance to administrative positions inside the school district, becoming deputy superintendents and the like
before attempting to become a superintendent themselves (Baker & Punswick & Belt, 2010). Baker, Punswick, and Belt

Dear School Board Research Paper
Dear,School Board Do you ever ask yourself what are in luches. Also pop is manley sugar there's a total of 30 grams of sugar in pop. My opinion is
they shouldn't be selling pop to kids for lunch. It's not good for them. For junk food they don't use real meat and eggs they use stuff that they get from
a factory and cook it and that's it. I hope the school board will change something about the lunches. One reason they shouldn't be selling pop and
junk foods at our schools is it can be harmful. Many people don't think on what they are giving the kids at the schools they give them junk food. The
pop isn't good for them either. Soon kids will get used to it and not have a care for what they are eating. Some of the food that people serve at

School Board Meeting
I recently viewed a taping of a school board meeting. This school board meeting was in the Waterloo Community School District. The meeting was
held in the board room at the Education Service Center. This center is located at 1516 Washington Street in Waterloo, Iowa. The meeting was held on
March 26, 2012, at 6:00 p.m. The board members that were present were Shanlee McNally, Sue Flynn, Andrea Sparks, and Lyle Schmitt. Also in
attendance was President of the Board, Mike Young, Vice

The items that generated the most discussion at this board meeting were the Food Service Software and Point of Sale Equipment. This item was about
purchasing food service software from Infinite Campus for the amount of $70,489.00. Matt O'Brien, Director of Technology, provided all the
information needed. The motion carried 6–0. Another item that took considerable time to discuss was the 2012–13 Budget Estimate and Publication.
Mr. Michael Coughlin, Chief Financial Officer provided the information on budget expenditure estimates, the tax levy rate for publication. A public
hearing was set for April 9, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. The motion carried 6–0. The third item that took considerable time was the Superintendent's report. Dr.
Norris thanked all of the public for attending tonight's meeting. One of the first items talked about was the teacher's concerns with the initiatives that
are being put into place at a fast rate. He stated that these initiatives were being put into place with the best interest of the students. He encouraged all
of the teachers to attend the meetings that will be held in the near future within the buildings that they work in and if anyone has something that they
want to say, "Please feel free and comfortable to do so." He reintegrated that all of the teachers ARE important and appreciated. One of the

A Student Board Representative For My School District
Fifteen years ago, I served as the student board representative for my school district. All I can really remember is being entertained by emotional parent
complaints and listening to jargon–filled presentations. Upon receiving my first pink slip from that same district seven years later, I spoke at a
school board meeting for the first time. Three years later, I was motivated by another pink slip to speak in front of a school board––this time as a
teacher for my current school district, San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) Juvenile Court and Community Schools (JCCS). Since that
first pink slip scare with JCCS, I have been a regular attendee at SDCOE board meetings. I try my best to pay attention and even take notes when
JCCS is on the agenda. I have spoken on behalf of my students and coworkers and even helped to introduce my site's student board representative.
However, I honestly spend most of the meetings bored by detailed presentations about programs far removed from my classroom or confused by
topics that I do not completely understand. However, I keep attending. During the past few weeks, I attended the San Diego Unified School District
(SDUSD) June 2 meeting and the SDCOE June 10 meeting. After observing a board meeting in a traditional school district for the first time in ten
years, I was reminded of the strong parent and community voice that is often shared during board meetings in local districts. On the other hand county

School Board Meeting Report
The school board meeting went a lot quicker than I was expecting it to. The members sped through many of the discussion topics they had for the day.
Speaking of members, the members that attended the meeting were Mike Calhoon, Scott Meiners, Rusty Blare, Steve Kubik, Bill Mann, Nelle
Schlomer. The member who wasn't attending the meeting was Joe Hockett. I thought the school board meeting went about as well as it could have.
One of the speakers at the school board meeting was Laura Root. Her job was to name all of the funds spent and made by the school district, which
took longer than most other things that happened during the meeting. Dan Aaker mentioned all the sports teams and how they did to the board, and
addressed the fact that the football team is getting new white jerseys. Brian Naasz talked about the elementary–school and about adding a shower to it
for handicapped students. Gerald Witte talked about the high–school; mentioning the upcoming prom. The board later approved a calendar and
acknowledged resignations. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One is Mr. Dan Aaker mentioning our sports teams. Another good thing is the fact that Mr. Aaker took time out of his announcements to talk about
our fine arts, such and band and choir. He didn't need to do this, but I am happy he did because I feel like the band and choir don't get recognized by
the school as much as they should. I think Mike Calhoon is very good at his job. He speaks clear enough to hear, impartial, and let discussions happen
without putting his own input in too much. The board did as much as they could have in the time allowed, because they passed every single motion that
was implemented. They also worked quick enough to end the meeting

School Board Is Not Fair Essay
Imagine a city where authorities make all the decisions, without the citizen's consent? Would you consider living in that city? No, not really. Now,
imagine that with schools boards and students. School boards shouldn't pick students schedules because the school board need to be fair, the students
are responsible for their own schedules, and the students will have mix responses.
The school board needs to be fair, even though they decided the outcome. This means that the school board should not be acting like dictators, when it
comes to the school–based arrangements. It isn't fair that what a school board decides on actually hurts the student's education. Especially when, they
turn a blind eye towards the students, because they don't want to accept the idea that what they present aren't always going to work. Also, in order for
them to really get confirmation that their new ruling is working, the school board should really ask the students on what they think about this new
change. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The students will have to live with their own schedules for a whole year. Being in classes that you don't like, will harm your learning experience.
School board members would love to think of themselves as people whom know–it–all. They love the comforting idea that they know their students
better than the students themselves. The school board doesn't know on what every, single, student in that class likes or dislikes. A statistic showing that
one student is bad at math and good in english does not show on what that student actually likes. What if that student actually loves math, but it just too
dumb to understand it? Exactly. Just because the school board spends 8+ hours with the students, that does not mean they know the students in and out.
Equally important, the parents pay for their children's tuition. Guess who pays the school board and everyone else in authority? The parents. So, by
that way, the parents should at least have a

School board meeting are essential to the everyday operation of school districts. The meeting was called to order by the school board president, the
conservator himself, where a quorum was present to start the meeting. Our school board members are elected and can serve a 4 year term, but the
district is under the state leadership currently. This is great, because with one individual making the decisions and voting, makes the process of getting
things done a smoother approach. With too many individuals making decisions sometimes, they cannot agree or reach consensus.
Cunningham & Cordeiro (2009) stated that in the past, board members were white males with a college degree ranging in age from 40–50 years old.
Today, there are more women and minorities seeking board positions, especially in urban areas. Well in Leflore County all of our board members is
one individual, the conservator himself. The agenda was adopted and the meeting proceeded with the Mississippi Forestry Commissioner to discuss

School Board Meeting Summary
The Wilson School District Board of Directors meets on the first and third Monday of each month to guide the operations of the district through six
strategic vision planks. These planks seek to: improve upon or expand Wilson's portfolio, grow Wilson regionally and nationally, increase
organizational agility and capacity, engage in creative development of new and existing infrastructure, create a flatter organizational structure, and
control for fiscal accountability. The following is a summary of the meeting which occurred on September 18, 2017, along with observations and
conclusions from the perspective of a future district administrator. The meeting was called to order promptly at 7 PM by Board President Steve

The floor was then ceded to Superintendent, Dr. Richard Faidley, who provided a detailed account of various personnel changes within the district. This
report included resignations, unpaid leave approval, change in status of current professional and support staff, new professional and support staff hires,
and extracurricular appointments. Interestingly, the wife of board member Chmielewski, who currently works as a part–time nurse in the district, was
approved as a substitute nurse. This vote was separated from the roll call votes on all other positions to allow Dr. Chmielewski to abstain. The meeting
continued with board member Jason Hopp presenting Dr. Matthew Flannery, formerly the principal of Shiloh Hills Elementary School, for a roll call
vote to approve him as the new Assistant Superintendent of the WIlson School District. Mr. Hopp spoke for approximately two minutes about the
credentials, reputation, and record of quality performance that Dr. Flannery has documented during his time with the district. A five–year contract was
approved on an 8–1 vote, with Mr. Martin voting "no". It may be worth observing that Mr. Martin is known as the "no man" of the current board, and
often tows one of the more conservative lines of all board members. One can speculate that he may have felt

School Board Roles
Public schooling in the United States seems somewhat unique in the fact it is essentially a set of state–based systems unlike many other nations
education systems that are managed and operated by their national government. "Although the Tenth Amendment [of the U.S. Constitution] seems
merely to state the truism that all that is not delegated to Congress is reserved to the states, the Court found in this amendment a core principle of state
sovereignty. This principle required that the federal government not intrude in areas traditionally controlled by the state." (Epstein, 2004, pg. 46). There
is a federal government role in education and there are many national influences such as education organization representing diverse groups from

School boards have been an integral feature of the U.S. public education system for more than a century, and they are widely regarded as the principal
democratic body capable of representing citizens in local education decisions. School board members, both individually and collectively, must serve as
advocates for children. They must make the community aware of its responsibility to our next generation and support programs that help meet the
needs of all children. Peter Downs in Schoolhouse Shams brings out important concepts of advocacy when describing the desegregation of our U.S.
schools, its history, and the effects it had on students, families, and communities. In the mission to educate ALL children, school boards as well as
other educators must advocate "instead of a mission to sort students––those not fit to enter school, those not fit for high school, those not fit to
graduate––public schools today have a mission to educate everyone to diploma or "college ready" levels (Downs, 2013, pg. 7). Additionally, school
improvement and academic achievement have taken center stage as indicators of successful school systems. "Standardized tests are at the center of
state and federal school–reform efforts and school boards answer to them." (Downs, 2013, pg. 15). School boards are accountable to more than one
master in terms of governance. The formal line of authority emanates from the state

School Boards And Legislative Bodies
During the Great Depression, schools began to provide lunch programs for school students, since many homes could not afford to feed their children a
full, well–balanced meal (Hinman 16). Throughout the past eighty years the budgets, regulations, and policies have been changed multiple times.
Whether or not these changes are helpful, are up for debate, and are topics many school boards and legislative bodies are forced to discuss. Some of the
most controversial topics being discussed are the cost students pay, the quality of the food, the amount of food going to waste, and the obesity rate of
students. The lunches that are served in schools are typically over priced, made of poor quality, thrown away, and is one of the leading causes to the
increasing obesity rates. Two dollars and seventy–five cents is the average price students pay unless they are receiving free or reduced lunches. The
issue with these prices is that only a small fraction of students are paying the full amount while everyone else around them is getting cut a deal by the
government. Majority of students get free or reduced lunches based on their families income and poverty level (Hinman 18). The federal government
provides approximately $9.8 billion to the federal school lunch program to feed approximately 50 million students a lunch every day. Most of the
money provided goes towards feeding the students from low–income families that qualify for free or reduced lunches (Hinman 16). This makes it

School Board Case Study
Issue: The authority to select or omit books in a library book list by the school board that are LGBT in nature and their rights to do so.
The appropriate standard of review in this case is reasonableness. First, the absence of a privative clause should be considered in light of the
corresponding absence of a clause expressly allowing the decisions of the Board to be appealed before the courts and of the non‑adjudicative nature
of the School Board. Second, the decision to approve the books or not requires the Board to balance the interests of different groups, a function which
falls within its core area of expertise as a locally elected representative body. While the decision also has a significant human rights dimension, here the

The majority of the trustees were of the view that the three books were not appropriate for K‑1 students and were unable to conclude, based on their
perception of parental concern and the demands of the curriculum, that such educational materials ought to be approved for K‑1. Of particular
importance to the Board's decision was that the recommended K‑1 learning resources set out by the Ministry of Education did not, at that time,
include any other resources expressly dealing with homosexuality or same‑sex couples or families. The family life education curriculum
sub–organizer refers to students being expected to identify a variety of models for family organization but does not indicate that parents in a
same‑sex relationship are to be addressed in K‑1. The prescribed learning outcomes for the K‑1 family life curriculum sub–organizer include
having children draw and write about their own families, and having children talk about each others' families. In a situation where there is a child in the
classroom that has same‑sex parents, these activities and others would raise the issue of same‑sex parented families and teachers may feel it
necessary to discuss it. Even in such a situation it is not necessary that educational resource materials which portray same‑sex parents be generally
approved for use in all classrooms in a particular school district. Other options exist.

A Debate Regarding School Boards
On April 26th, 2011, the Thomas Fordham Institute hosted a debate regarding school boards in the 21st century. Four panelists discussed the validity
and importance of school boards. While the panelists disagreed on several points, all parties felt that school boards are still important in today's
society. Although school boards are still vital at a certain level, serious concerns were also presented during the panel discussion regarding the
traditional practices of governance and localized centers of control within school boards today. Anne Bryant provides research–based studies, examples,
and justification in favor of school boards. She outlined that effective school boards must have a shared vision, set tightly focused goals, utilize data,
focus on policy, and focus and collaborate with all stakeholders. According to Bryant, school boards must connect to the community and the local
taxpayers while boosting community engagement. While we agree that school boards must be concerned about student achievement, I appreciate that
she also expressed the idea that most school boards do not believe in silver bullets and are caution in nature. I hesitate to support school boards
because I feel they often tend to micromanage and feel the power to make sweeping policies even though they lack the significant scientific background
of education. Her recognition that school boards often want reform, but know there are not quick fixes helped to reassure me of their intentions.

The Importance Of Well-Meaning Board In Schools
The school board is a district's link between the community and the school. This well–meaning board serves to ensure the highest quality of education.
However, the board has a specific role and my role as superintendent requires me to evaluate the effectiveness of district plans and programs. I would
not want to make the mistakes of launching these curricula and leave our teachers with little or no direction (provide them with high–quality
professional development). Initially, I would want to review our current curriculum with principals and curriculum director to see just how much
change would be required with the implementation. This group of stakeholders would review the district's mission and vision to ensure alignment with
the new standards.

Argumentative Essay On School Board
Conversely, the Supreme Court struck down a school board policy requiring any school employee who became a candidate for public office to take
a leave of absence. Laws or policies prohibiting all public employees from running for any political office have been struck down as overly broad.
Several courts have held that public educators, unlike public employees who are directly involved in the operation of governmental agencies, have the
right to run for and hold public office. The Utah Supreme Court, for example, ruled that public school teachers and administrators were not disqualified
from serving in the state legislature.
Although school boards must respect employees' associational rights, they are obligated to ensure that the political activities of school personnel do
not adversely affect the school. Disciplinary actions can be imposed if educators neglect instructional duties to campaign for issues or candidates, use
the classroom as a political forum, or disrupt school operations because of their political activities. But school boards must be certain that constraints
imposed on employees' freedom of association are not based on mere disagreement with the political orientation of the activities.

religion. School boards do not ban anyone that has a "different" gender, religion or culture. Everyone is welcomed and wanted. The school board
makes policies to make sure that educational standards are met by teachers and they reflect the community's values. They also make justice by creating
rules that the teachers, students, and administration have to follow. The school board allows policy to be debated and decisions can be appealed. They

The School Entrance Examination Board Essay
After establishing his legacy, and as a member of American Psychological Association, Brigham was appointed secretary of the College Entrance
Examination Board, creating the blueprint and later developing the SAT assessment (Kamin, 1975).
The Gatekeepers
In order to monitor student's aptitude with college prep subjects the College Board was formed (Atkinson & Geiser, 2009). Created in 1900, 12
prominent universities assisted in forming the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB). The organization help to standardize the admission
process for universities and cultivate secondary curriculum.
At the time, there was widespread fear amongst elite leaders about the increasing growth of the immigrant population in the U.S. Many university
administrators were concerned about the explosion and the effects this would have on their student populations. Introduce in 1926, the SATbecame a
covert means for universities to selectively choose potential candidates, although during the earlier part of the twentieth century, college was primarily
for the elite. Since these assessments measured aptitude, postsecondary institutions relied on the test to standardize the process for student's academic
outcomes and determine if they were qualified for prominent universities (Berger, 2012).
University administrators realized the SAT's could be used to select the best candidates for admission and it also could be used to resolve the issue of
overpopulating colleges with students who were not

School Board Strike Research Paper
Introduction Around us in our community there are social issues that are not always seen and some issues have a different meaning that what it is
perceived. There has been some issues about school in my community. To be more specific, the high school teachers of Durham and peel region they
have an issue with the school board and are on strike. There are many factors why the teachers are in strike and there are also many negative this has
have on many students. The board and the teachers still have not came up with an agreement, and seem to be unable to come up with possible solutions.
Pre–Knowledge about the issue Searching up local issues was not the first time I came across of this issue. As a student I am always are about education
news locally. When I heard the work strike I thought it was going to be affecting me directly. Talks about this issue is everywhere on the local new
and in school, so I knew that the teachers were going on strike. The only thing that affected me is that I am worried that the strike issue will affect
the school board I'm in, Toronto District Catholic School Board. This strike/ issue is a big problem and I did not understand why I couldn't be
resolved until I did my research. For those who don't know, changing rules in a big school board cannot happen overnight therefore that is why this
strike is still going on. The issue seems like a big issue because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The teachers are striking because of the Liberal government wage freeze, classroom sizes, and preparation time. Since the teachers are on strike it is
making another issue with the high school students, classes are cancelled because the teachers are not there to teach the students. This affects the

School Administration And The School Board
Scenario Three
a) What action, if any, should have been taken by the school administration when the local teachers' association publicly criticized the administration
and the school board? Even if they wanted to take action, there is nothing the Skyline School District Board of Education can do about the teachers'
exercising their First Amendment's rights. Public school teachers, as public employees, are entitled to some First Amendment protections. "The
problem in any case is to arrive at a balance between the interests of the teacher, as a citizen, in commenting upon matters of public concern and the
interests of the State, as an employer, in promoting the efficiency of the public services it performs through its employees" (Pickering v. Board of
Education 1968, in Secunda, 2010). In this case, the teachers were expressing their views and feelings more as citizens than as an employee when they
published the open letter in the newspaper. The statements in the letter did not target any school official that the teacher dealt with on a daily basis,
and therefore left no reason for the board of education to take any course of action.
b) What is your evaluation of the position taken by Mr. Sullivan in his conference with the principal? In what way would you have acted differently if
you had been the principal, during the conference with Mr. Sullivan?

Graduation Speech : School Board Meeting
On February 11th, 2016 I attended the Houston Independent School District's (HISD) school board meeting. I received a first–hand experience of how
educational decisions are made and I also witnessed all the intricacies of the process. An article entitled Understanding Your School Board states that
"school boards are entrusted by the public to translate the needs of students into policies, plans, and goals that will be supported by the community"
(www.tasb.org). In other words, the board and its members are responsible for making and enforcing essential decisions for the school district. They are
ultimately a strong determining factor for their students' academic success.
The major sections on the agenda included: the meditation and pledge of allegiance, recognitions, consideration and approval of minutes from previous
meetings, trustee B–1 comments, and business agenda respectively. The meeting went according to the outline. After it reconvened for the open
session, it began with honoring the country as all recited the pledge of allegiances and stood for a minute of silence. Immediately following were
recognitions including: employee of the month, Martin Luther King (MLK) achievement award recipient, and the black excellence award. All the
board members approved the minutes from the previous meetings and the trustee B–1 comments–which is the "reports and comments from the Board
president and Board members regarding [school, community, and district updates]" (Board of

Compare And Contrast Superintendent And School Board...
Superintendent and School Board Relationships Simple arithmetic is not an easy task. Just like some students have difficulties with basic mathematics
skills, so does the Superintendent. This is not to say that the Superintendent cannot do basic math. What this is really comparing is the challenging
undertaking involved in counting four out of seven votes in favor of the Superintendent 's recommendations. Swaying back and forth for Board votes
is timely and very hard to accomplish, but it is an essential part of the job. Sharp and Walter (2004) explain board members have no authority as
individuals. However, together or as a majority they can be extremely powerful in making policy. Longer tenures and more efficient working... Show

Along the same lines, it is important that when individual board members request information it is sent to every single member. Otherwise, the
Superintendent gives up the opportunity to understand from where each board member is coming (Effective Superintendent–School Board Relations).
This to some extent could be used as informational leverage, which could help down the line when trying to sway support. Keeping records on request
is also considered very helpful when working with Boards. It is important that they stay informed, but it is also just as valuable that they get some
feedback as to how much information they are requesting. They may tend to back off from requesting so much information. Regardless as to how and
how often, the Superintendent must establish a communication system. Boards do not like surprises. It undermines board members ' trust, and makes
them look bad, when they hear information about the district from another source (Effective Superintendent–School Board Relations). Getting the
Boards trust can assist in creating a team concept. In any relationship, whether it is at home or work trust is essential for success. Trust is fundamental
to all working relationships. Superintendents must be able to develop trust so that all members feel united in working toward a common goal. Many
times, the demise of a Superintendent–School Board relationship can

School Board Meeting Reflection Paper
I attended the Sarasota County School Board Meeting in on Tuesday, October 4, 2016. The School Board holds meetings on the 1st Tuesday and 3rd
Tuesday of each month, with the exception of one meeting in July and December (Sarasota County Schools, 2016). After any special presentations and
the Superintendent's report, citizens are welcomed to speak during the "Hearing of the Citizens" (Sarasota County Schools, 2016). The citizens are
limited to three–minute speeches to get their topic across (Sarasota County Schools, 2016). This means that speakers need to be prepared because
three–minute to get a point across is not very long. The speaker I am going to be writing about is Bear M. he is a 7th grader at Pineview in Sarasota

The main thing I wished he would have done differently is not read off of an 8 ВЅ by 11 sheets of paper. If he would have practiced his speech more
he could have just had 3 by 5 note cards and gave most of his speech by memory. Reading off the sheets of paper took away from the personal
aspect of the speech. It also made him not look up and give eye contact much at all which did seem to get a bit boring towards the end of the
speech. Overall, though, his conversational delivery, vocal variety, and volume were perfect. He had a couple of pauses but was able to regroup
and continue where he left off without making a big deal about it. Since he is only in the 7th grade, I applaud him for his overall delivery, some
adults will not even go up in front of a board of directors and give a speech, so he is very brave. This shows that he really wanted to get his point

Local school board meetings are a venue that allows the public to attend and be a part of the educational process. These meetings provide community
members with important information about upcoming events so that they are able to be well informed of the happenings that are taking place within
the school system in which their child attends. Along with being able to learn about what is taking place within the school, it also allows parents and
parent groups the opportunity to express their opinions and concerns about matters that could likely affect their children. Monthly school board
meetings are a way to help establish and maintain open lines of communication between the school and community members. By allowing the
community members the opportunity to be heard, it further enhances the relationship between the school and the community. On October 6th, 2015,

Reflection On School Board Meeting
School Board Meeting Reflection Every school district has board meetings throughout the school year. Unfortunately, many parents, community
members, & school personnel do not attend such important meetings because they don't realize or understand the importance of such board meetings or

Dear School Board Report

Lately there's been several reports of violent school incidents caused from bullying, and to avoid further problems I think there should be some type
of policy to prevent bullying from continuing to happened to children. Bullying has a major effect on kids , giving them a higher chance of suffering
depression, sadness and loss of confidence. That can also lead to there adult life , and with social media people have even more ways to bully called
cyber bullying . Which is sending threatening messages , posting rude picture or even making fake pages and spreading rumors . This different type of
bullying still has the same effects on people , and we need to create something that stops it.

School Board Meeting Reflection
Due to the fact that I am currently majoring in Elementary Education I thought it would be interesting and relevant to my major to attend a school
board meeting for Clark County School District. General school board meetings are held regularly two times per month and the public is
encouraged to attend and can even sign up to speak on any issue scheduled for the night. Attending this meeting was a little confusing at the
beginning because some of the items on the agenda were issues that had been previously discussed at earlier meetings and were just being reviewed
or quickly affirmed by the board members. Though most of the agenda issues were unfamiliar to me as a member of the public, there was printed
information and background packets available before entering the meeting that helped give some idea of what the meeting would consist of and the
research and information behind each agenda item. Overall, the meeting was very orderly and generous time was given to any person that signed up
to speak on an item. One of the agenda items that interested me the most was a proposal for a new specialty school, Marzano Academies. In recent

Why The School Board Should Extend School Hours
The school board plans is considering adding one and a half hours to the school day.The extra one and half of hours would provide more instruction
time. This would also provide students more time for remediation, and teachers more time to plan interactive lessons with the extension of the school
day. For these reasons, the school board should extend the school day by one and a half hours.
If the school board extended the school day by one and a half hours,it would provide more instruction time.Teachers would have more time to explain
there lessons out to the students. The students would have more time to ask questions and get help from the teacher.Students have a easier time

Smithville School Board Situation Analysis
Recently, some disheartening Facebook posts were discovered on the page of Michael L. Till II who is a candidate for the Smithville School Board.
These posts ranged from racists to derogatory to just plain inappropriate and showed us the lack of moral integrity by a candidate running for an office
that represents the Smithville School District. As a student in the district and a community voice, I wanted to bring this to the attention of the voters of
Smithville.
As the Smithville community works to advance the School District, Till does not have the moral compass needed to hold a school board position and
represent the students, faculty and administration. Electing someone like Till would be a degression and misrepresentation to the goal of the
Smithville School District which is to "build a tradition of excellence" and help students become "proactive, compassionate leaders". For 13 years of
our lives, we look up to adults and seek out mentors in all aspects of the District, whether it be faculty, administration or school board members. We
should expect the utmost integrity, respect and commitment out of our community leaders as they try to instill in us, the students.
Electing Till would put a person on the board who lacks this integrity and respect for all and would show our students that it is okay to disrespect ...

The first one that jumps out to me is the "Appointments" that were discussed. During this time, future teachers can take note of who is retiring and
get an idea of what positions will be open when the time comes. It is a good way to become involved and informed about a district you are interest
in. Another topic that was discussed that will impact feature students was budget cuts. This impact them because it could impact their salary as well
as impact what resources are available to them when the time comes. However, with seeing current teachers propose for a grant it shows new
teachers to not be afraid to ask for resources that can help benefit and further your student's education. Going to this school board meeting has
enlightened me on how a meeting works and what can all be discussed during these meetings. I think it is important as a teacher to be in attendance at
the meetings to be informed and knowledgeable about what is going on in your own district. I know for me when the time comes I would like to

School Boards Shape Local Education Policy

  • 1. School Boards And School Board At the local level a school district can be seen as a unicameral parliamentary system. School boards create education policy and appoint a superintendent to execute those policies.Dissatisfaction Theory of Democracy holds the greatest explanatory potential in school board turnover (Alsbury, 2003). Applying this theory to school boards, the theory states changes in a community 's values translates to changes in community participation. This then leads to changes to school board members who share this new value. And finally the school board changes its policy to reflect the new values (Alsbury, 2003). Superintendents serve at the pleasure of the school board. Stream (2013) has argued that executive appointed officials change when new... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, principals usually score within the top 10% of teachers in their state teaching certification exams. Entry level administration salaries rival the salaries of teachers with decades of experience teaching, thus encouraging many young teachers to leave the classroom (Baker & Punswick & Belt, 2010). Principals are more likely to leave positions at elementary or middle schools and pursue principalships at large high schools. Where a principal receives their undergraduate degree has little effect on their salaries, but selectivity of their master 's degree program has a large effect on pay and school demographics. Principals of schools with grater black student concentration are more likely to have principals who attended less selective universities for their graduate degrees, and principals with graduate degrees from more selective universities that focus on research are more likely to take principalships in non–black concentrated communities (Baker & Punswick & Belt, 2010). Superintendents rise through the educational ranks, understanding what type of teachers undertake a principalship helps us understand some of the self–selection criteria superintendents possess. Superintendents supersede principals and advance to administrative positions inside the school district, becoming deputy superintendents and the like before attempting to become a superintendent themselves (Baker & Punswick & Belt, 2010). • 2. Dear School Board Research Paper Dear,School Board Do you ever ask yourself what are in luches. Also pop is manley sugar there's a total of 30 grams of sugar in pop. My opinion is they shouldn't be selling pop to kids for lunch. It's not good for them. For junk food they don't use real meat and eggs they use stuff that they get from a factory and cook it and that's it. I hope the school board will change something about the lunches. One reason they shouldn't be selling pop and junk foods at our schools is it can be harmful. Many people don't think on what they are giving the kids at the schools they give them junk food. The pop isn't good for them either. Soon kids will get used to it and not have a care for what they are eating. Some of the food that people serve at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. School Board Paper School Board Meeting I recently viewed a taping of a school board meeting. This school board meeting was in the Waterloo Community School District. The meeting was held in the board room at the Education Service Center. This center is located at 1516 Washington Street in Waterloo, Iowa. The meeting was held on March 26, 2012, at 6:00 p.m. The board members that were present were Shanlee McNally, Sue Flynn, Andrea Sparks, and Lyle Schmitt. Also in attendance was President of the Board, Mike Young, Vice –president, Bernice Richard, Superintendent, Dr. Gary Norris, Executive Director of School & Community Relations/Board Secretary, Sharon Miller, Chief Financial Officer/Board Treasurer, Michael Coughlin, Assistant... This item was about purchasing food service software from Infinite Campus for the amount of $70,489.00. Matt O'Brien, Director of Technology, provided all the information needed. The motion carried 6–0. Another item that took considerable time to discuss was the 2012–13 Budget Estimate and Publication. Mr. Michael Coughlin, Chief Financial Officer provided the information on budget expenditure estimates, the tax levy rate for publication. A public hearing was set for April 9, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. The motion carried 6–0. The third item that took considerable time was the Superintendent's report. Dr. Norris thanked all of the public for attending tonight's meeting. One of the first items talked about was the teacher's concerns with the initiatives that are being put into place at a fast rate. He stated that these initiatives were being put into place with the best interest of the students. He encouraged all of the teachers to attend the meetings that will be held in the near future within the buildings that they work in and if anyone has something that they want to say, "Please feel free and comfortable to do so." • 4. A Student Board Representative For My School District Fifteen years ago, I served as the student board representative for my school district. All I can really remember is being entertained by emotional parent complaints and listening to jargon–filled presentations. Upon receiving my first pink slip from that same district seven years later, I spoke at a school board meeting for the first time. Three years later, I was motivated by another pink slip to speak in front of a school board––this time as a teacher for my current school district, San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) Juvenile Court and Community Schools (JCCS). Since that first pink slip scare with JCCS, I have been a regular attendee at SDCOE board meetings. I try my best to pay attention and even take notes when JCCS is on the agenda. I have spoken on behalf of my students and coworkers and even helped to introduce my site's student board representative. However, I honestly spend most of the meetings bored by detailed presentations about programs far removed from my classroom or confused by topics that I do not completely understand. However, I keep attending. During the past few weeks, I attended the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) June 2 meeting and the SDCOE June 10 meeting. After observing a board meeting in a traditional school district for the first time in ten years, I was reminded of the strong parent and community voice that is often shared during board meetings in local districts. On the other hand county board meetings are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. School Board Meeting Report The school board meeting went a lot quicker than I was expecting it to. The members sped through many of the discussion topics they had for the day. Speaking of members, the members that attended the meeting were Mike Calhoon, Scott Meiners, Rusty Blare, Steve Kubik, Bill Mann, Nelle Schlomer. The member who wasn't attending the meeting was Joe Hockett. I thought the school board meeting went about as well as it could have. One of the speakers at the school board meeting was Laura Root. Her job was to name all of the funds spent and made by the school district, which took longer than most other things that happened during the meeting. Dan Aaker mentioned all the sports teams and how they did to the board, and addressed the fact that the football team is getting new white jerseys. Brian Naasz talked about the elementary–school and about adding a shower to it for handicapped students. Gerald Witte talked about the high–school; mentioning the upcoming prom. The board later approved a calendar and acknowledged resignations. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One is Mr. Dan Aaker mentioning our sports teams. Another good thing is the fact that Mr. Aaker took time out of his announcements to talk about our fine arts, such and band and choir. He didn't need to do this, but I am happy he did because I feel like the band and choir don't get recognized by the school as much as they should. I think Mike Calhoon is very good at his job. He speaks clear enough to hear, impartial, and let discussions happen without putting his own input in too much. The board did as much as they could have in the time allowed, because they passed every single motion that was implemented. They also worked quick enough to end the meeting ... • 7. School Board Is Not Fair Essay Imagine a city where authorities make all the decisions, without the citizen's consent? Would you consider living in that city? No, not really. Now, imagine that with schools boards and students. School boards shouldn't pick students schedules because the school board need to be fair, the students are responsible for their own schedules, and the students will have mix responses. The school board needs to be fair, even though they decided the outcome. This means that the school board should not be acting like dictators, when it comes to the school–based arrangements. It isn't fair that what a school board decides on actually hurts the student's education. Especially when, they turn a blind eye towards the students, because they don't want to accept the idea that what they present aren't always going to work. Also, in order for them to really get confirmation that their new ruling is working, the school board should really ask the students on what they think about this new change. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The students will have to live with their own schedules for a whole year. Being in classes that you don't like, will harm your learning experience. School board members would love to think of themselves as people whom know–it–all. They love the comforting idea that they know their students better than the students themselves. The school board doesn't know on what every, single, student in that class likes or dislikes. A statistic showing that one student is bad at math and good in english does not show on what that student actually likes. What if that student actually loves math, but it just too dumb to understand it? Exactly. Just because the school board spends 8+ hours with the students, that does not mean they know the students in and out. Equally important, the parents pay for their children's tuition. Guess who pays the school board and everyone else in authority? The parents. So, by that way, the parents should at least have a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. School Board Meeting Paper School board meeting are essential to the everyday operation of school districts. The meeting was called to order by the school board president, the conservator himself, where a quorum was present to start the meeting. Our school board members are elected and can serve a 4 year term, but the district is under the state leadership currently. This is great, because with one individual making the decisions and voting, makes the process of getting things done a smoother approach. Well in Leflore County all of our board members is one individual, the conservator himself. The agenda was adopted and the meeting proceeded with the Mississippi Forestry Commissioner to discuss Recommendation for the 16th Section Lease Description of Section 16, Township 16 North, and Range 4 West. The board decided to advertise land for Agricultural and Hunting and Fishing Purposes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The floor was then ceded to Superintendent, Dr. Richard Faidley, who provided a detailed account of various personnel changes within the district. This report included resignations, unpaid leave approval, change in status of current professional and support staff, new professional and support staff hires, and extracurricular appointments. Interestingly, the wife of board member Chmielewski, who currently works as a part–time nurse in the district, was approved as a substitute nurse. This vote was separated from the roll call votes on all other positions to allow Dr. Chmielewski to abstain. The meeting continued with board member Jason Hopp presenting Dr. Matthew Flannery, formerly the principal of Shiloh Hills Elementary School, for a roll call vote to approve him as the new Assistant Superintendent of the WIlson School District. Mr. Hopp spoke for approximately two minutes about the credentials, reputation, and record of quality performance that Dr. Flannery has documented during his time with the district. A five–year contract was approved on an 8–1 vote, with Mr. Martin voting "no". • 10. School Board Roles Public schooling in the United States seems somewhat unique in the fact it is essentially a set of state–based systems unlike many other nations education systems that are managed and operated by their national government. "Although the Tenth Amendment [of the U.S. Constitution] seems merely to state the truism that all that is not delegated to Congress is reserved to the states, the Court found in this amendment a core principle of state sovereignty. This principle required that the federal government not intrude in areas traditionally controlled by the state." (Epstein, 2004, pg. 46). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... School boards have been an integral feature of the U.S. public education system for more than a century, and they are widely regarded as the principal democratic body capable of representing citizens in local education decisions. School board members, both individually and collectively, must serve as advocates for children. They must make the community aware of its responsibility to our next generation and support programs that help meet the needs of all children. Peter Downs in Schoolhouse Shams brings out important concepts of advocacy when describing the desegregation of our U.S. schools, its history, and the effects it had on students, families, and communities. In the mission to educate ALL children, school boards as well as other educators must advocate "instead of a mission to sort students––those not fit to enter school, those not fit for high school, those not fit to graduate––public schools today have a mission to educate everyone to diploma or "college ready" levels (Downs, 2013, pg. 7). Additionally, school improvement and academic achievement have taken center stage as indicators of successful school systems. "Standardized tests are at the center of state and federal school–reform efforts and school boards answer to them." (Downs, 2013, pg. 15). • 11. School Boards And Legislative Bodies During the Great Depression, schools began to provide lunch programs for school students, since many homes could not afford to feed their children a full, well–balanced meal (Hinman 16). Throughout the past eighty years the budgets, regulations, and policies have been changed multiple times. Whether or not these changes are helpful, are up for debate, and are topics many school boards and legislative bodies are forced to discuss. Some of the most controversial topics being discussed are the cost students pay, the quality of the food, the amount of food going to waste, and the obesity rate of students. The lunches that are served in schools are typically over priced, made of poor quality, thrown away, and is one of the leading causes to the increasing obesity rates. Two dollars and seventy–five cents is the average price students pay unless they are receiving free or reduced lunches. The issue with these prices is that only a small fraction of students are paying the full amount while everyone else around them is getting cut a deal by the government. Majority of students get free or reduced lunches based on their families income and poverty level (Hinman 18). The federal government provides approximately $9.8 billion to the federal school lunch program to feed approximately 50 million students a lunch every day. Most of the money provided goes towards feeding the students from low–income families that qualify for free or reduced lunches (Hinman 16). This makes it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. School Board Case Study Issue: The authority to select or omit books in a library book list by the school board that are LGBT in nature and their rights to do so. The appropriate standard of review in this case is reasonableness. First, the absence of a privative clause should be considered in light of the corresponding absence of a clause expressly allowing the decisions of the Board to be appealed before the courts and of the non‑adjudicative nature of the School Board. Second, the decision to approve the books or not requires the Board to balance the interests of different groups, a function which falls within its core area of expertise as a locally elected representative body. The majority of the trustees were of the view that the three books were not appropriate for K‑1 students and were unable to conclude, based on their perception of parental concern and the demands of the curriculum, that such educational materials ought to be approved for K‑1. Of particular importance to the Board's decision was that the recommended K‑1 learning resources set out by the Ministry of Education did not, at that time, include any other resources expressly dealing with homosexuality or same‑sex couples or families. The family life education curriculum sub–organizer refers to students being expected to identify a variety of models for family organization but does not indicate that parents in a same‑sex relationship are to be addressed in K‑1. The prescribed learning outcomes for the K‑1 family life curriculum sub–organizer include having children draw and write about their own families, and having children talk about each others' families. In a situation where there is a child in the classroom that has same‑sex parents, these activities and others would raise the issue of same‑sex parented families and teachers may feel it necessary to discuss it. Even in such a situation it is not necessary that educational resource materials which portray same‑sex parents be generally approved for use in all classrooms in a particular school district. • 13. A Debate Regarding School Boards On April 26th, 2011, the Thomas Fordham Institute hosted a debate regarding school boards in the 21st century. Four panelists discussed the validity and importance of school boards. While the panelists disagreed on several points, all parties felt that school boards are still important in today's society. Although school boards are still vital at a certain level, serious concerns were also presented during the panel discussion regarding the traditional practices of governance and localized centers of control within school boards today. Anne Bryant provides research–based studies, examples, and justification in favor of school boards. She outlined that effective school boards must have a shared vision, set tightly focused goals, utilize data, focus on policy, and focus and collaborate with all stakeholders. According to Bryant, school boards must connect to the community and the local taxpayers while boosting community engagement. While we agree that school boards must be concerned about student achievement, I appreciate that she also expressed the idea that most school boards do not believe in silver bullets and are caution in nature. I hesitate to support school boards because I feel they often tend to micromanage and feel the power to make sweeping policies even though they lack the significant scientific background of education. This well–meaning board serves to ensure the highest quality of education. However, the board has a specific role and my role as superintendent requires me to evaluate the effectiveness of district plans and programs. I would not want to make the mistakes of launching these curricula and leave our teachers with little or no direction (provide them with high–quality professional development). • 20. Argumentative Essay On School Board Conversely, the Supreme Court struck down a school board policy requiring any school employee who became a candidate for public office to take a leave of absence. Laws or policies prohibiting all public employees from running for any political office have been struck down as overly broad. Several courts have held that public educators, unlike public employees who are directly involved in the operation of governmental agencies, have the right to run for and hold public office. The Utah Supreme Court, for example, ruled that public school teachers and administrators were not disqualified from serving in the state legislature. Although school boards must respect employees' associational rights, they are obligated to ensure that the political activities of school personnel do not adversely affect the school. Disciplinary actions can be imposed if educators neglect instructional duties to campaign for issues or candidates, use the classroom as a political forum, or disrupt school operations because of their political activities. But school boards must be certain that constraints imposed on employees' freedom of association are not based on mere disagreement with the political orientation of the activities. At the time, there was widespread fear amongst elite leaders about the increasing growth of the immigrant population in the U.S. Many university administrators were concerned about the explosion and the effects this would have on their student populations. Introduce in 1926, the SATbecame a covert means for universities to selectively choose potential candidates, although during the earlier part of the twentieth century, college was primarily for the elite. Since these assessments measured aptitude, postsecondary institutions relied on the test to standardize the process for student's academic outcomes and determine if they were qualified for prominent universities (Berger, 2012). • 26. School Administration And The School Board Scenario Three a) What action, if any, should have been taken by the school administration when the local teachers' association publicly criticized the administration and the school board? Even if they wanted to take action, there is nothing the Skyline School District Board of Education can do about the teachers' exercising their First Amendment's rights. Public school teachers, as public employees, are entitled to some First Amendment protections. "The problem in any case is to arrive at a balance between the interests of the teacher, as a citizen, in commenting upon matters of public concern and the interests of the State, as an employer, in promoting the efficiency of the public services it performs through its employees" (Pickering v. Board of Education 1968, in Secunda, 2010). In this case, the teachers were expressing their views and feelings more as citizens than as an employee when they published the open letter in the newspaper. The statements in the letter did not target any school official that the teacher dealt with on a daily basis, and therefore left no reason for the board of education to take any course of action. b) What is your evaluation of the position taken by Mr. Sullivan in his conference with the principal? Just like some students have difficulties with basic mathematics skills, so does the Superintendent. This is not to say that the Superintendent cannot do basic math. Swaying back and forth for Board votes is timely and very hard to accomplish, but it is an essential part of the job. Sharp and Walter (2004) explain board members have no authority as individuals. Along the same lines, it is important that when individual board members request information it is sent to every single member. Otherwise, the Superintendent gives up the opportunity to understand from where each board member is coming (Effective Superintendent–School Board Relations). Keeping records on request is also considered very helpful when working with Boards. It is important that they stay informed, but it is also just as valuable that they get some feedback as to how much information they are requesting. They may tend to back off from requesting so much information. Regardless as to how and how often, the Superintendent must establish a communication system. Boards do not like surprises. It undermines board members ' trust, and makes them look bad, when they hear information about the district from another source (Effective Superintendent–School Board Relations).
