Blackfish Documentary
Blackfish Lori Marino, a neuroscientist says "All Whales in captivity have a bade life. They're all
emotionally destroyed. They're all psychologically destroyed." The documentary Blackfish focuses
on the fatal effects of taking orcas out of their natural habitat and the tragic deaths that have given a
new perspective to what can happen to animals in captivity. Since I'm a big lover of animals, this
documentary immediately grabbed my attention. What really kept me on the edge of my seat was
the reveal of the horrendous treatment orcas in captivity are subjected to.
Gabriela Cowperthwaite, the director and producer of this documentary reveals the harsh treatment
of whales in captivity, and what results come from it. Through interviews from former trainers and
experts, it is shown what it's like working with killer whales, and that they can be incredibly kind
animals who are extremely intelligent. Lori ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Howard Garett is a 66–year–old orca researcher and activist based on Whidbey Island in
Washington state, USA. Howard has been working with Southern resident orcas of the Pacific
Northwest for over 30 years, beginning as a field assistant with the Center for Whale Research.
Howard launched the Lolita campaign in 1995, and the Orca Network as it is known today in 2001,
which promotes conservation through education and awareness." (Lipman, Orcaaware.org) Dr. Lori
Marino is internationally known for her work on the evolution of the brain and intelligence in
dolphins and whales. She has published over 130 peer–reviewed scientific papers, book chapters,

Animals Should Not Be Held in Captivity
Animal captivity has been an ongoing debate for over 60 years. There should be no question about
whether animal captivity is wrong. "Hundreds of thousands of wild animals across the world are
snatched from natural habitats, forced into captivity and subjected to abuse, both mentally and
physically, in the name of entertainment and profit." (World Animal Protection 1) Places such as the
circus use abusive training methods such as, hooks, chains, whips, electric rods, and blunt
instruments. (Born Free USA 1) Animals deserve to live freely in the wild. Their freedom is taken
away the moment they are put in a cage. When animals are brought ... Show more content on

Trainers use severe tactics to get animals to perform tricks. In captivity, dolphins are trained to
beach themselves so people can pet or kiss them, but if they stay in that position too long, they will
slowly crush their internal organs. In captivity, dolphins are trained through food deprivation and are
given food when they perform tricks. When dolphins wave to you, they are hungry and expect food.
(World Animal Protection 1) Animals are sometimes given little to no food and water, which are
necessities for survival! Animals are often crammed into cages for long periods of time. Them being
trapped in such a small place stresses them out and can hurt them physically. Animals in captivity
are prone to stress. They show signs of stress through pacing, swaying, and unnatural behavior. One
major sign that dolphins show that is considered "unnatural behavior" would be their activities. In
the wild, dolphins spend 80% of their time below the surface playing, hunting, exploring, etc. In
captivity, dolphins spend 80% of their time above water. (World Animal Protection 1)
The second reason animals should not be held in captivity is because the exhibits they live in are too
small and not natural to them. Zoos do not provide animals with the proper habitats they need to
survive. The habitats are designed to imitate the animal's natural habitat, but are usually not natural.
There are large animals, such as, elephants, that do not have the large space they need.

Captivity Is Cruel "Can you imagine being in a small concrete enclosure for your life when you're

people believe the keeping orca whales captive is damaging to the animal and affects them in a

"In the wild, despite centuries of sharing the ocean, there has been only a single reliable report of an
orca harming a human being." ("8 Reasons Orcas Don't Belong at SeaWorld"). Due to stress,
aggression and other causes, captive whales have killed 3 humans just since 1990s. Captive whales
have injured numerous of other humans within that time as well. This proves that keeping whales in
their natural habitat is best for humans. Also, most whales are not compatible to be living in small
quarters with many other whales, results can be harmful. Sea world of Hurt says; "The resulting
anxiety and tension cause fights between orcas." ("8 Reasons Orcas Don't Belong at SeaWorld"). In
the wild orca whales have strong social bonds that rarely ever lead to violent fights. However if
fights do occur, whales have enough room to get away, captivity leads to several injuries because
there is no place for the whales to go. To minimize the amount of violent activity between whales, it
best to leave them in their natural environment. Finally, whales are social animals that live in groups
differing from two to 15 individuals, everything changes in captivity, for example, "In some
populations, children stay with their mothers for life." ("8 Reasons Orcas Don't Belong at
SeaWorld"). When orcas are split up with their families, they are put in small tanks with random
whales from other family units. They are forced to interact and live with one another even though
they may speak different languages. Imagine being taken from your home and out into a random
house somewhere around the world. How would you feel? This is what is happening to whales

Analysis Of The Documentary ' Blackfish '
Sea World rebuttal was not considered in the documentary of "Blackfish" which clearly defines the
bias views of the creator. So without choice, viewers are marked to take the side of the creator or
leave the documentary feeling like a kid in a fine china shop, unable to touch or lose your balance
for fear of shattering the look of the shop. Unfortunately, the problem with animal activist groups is
that they force their religious views of animals on others with no other biases to consider. Hence,
their real arguments are skewed and we are unable to clearly see the real poignant side without the
opinions.
There are significant arguments on both sides of the issue, but the real issues are keeping the
animals in captivity, keeping them alive, keep the cycle of life continuing to grow and produce all
that nature intended. Many believe for the purpose of learning more about ourselves as humans with
have the right to explore our possibilities with the similarities of those of the mammal species.
Theses people argue for the acceptable need for capturing the animals in the wild and keep them in a
protected environment, there are several points to stated and generally cited. Theses include:
Captivity kills orcas. Very few captive orcas make it to midlife (approximately 30 years for males
and 45 for females) and not one out of more than 200 held in captivity has ever come close to old
age (60 for males, 80 for females). Most captive orcas die while they are still very young by wild

Seafish Pros And Cons
Since the Blackfish documentary viewed on CNN and Netflix, SeaWorld has been facing the
criticisms highlighted in the film. They contend they are the world's most respected zoological
institution and the global leader in marine mammal veterinary care, husbandry, training, and
welfare" (Burford). SeaWorld rehabilitates and returns hundred of wild animals back to their homes
each year along with donating millions of dollars to conservation and scientific research. Though
this in itself is not a good argument for being allowed to keep their orcas, it shows the prestige the
organization carries and the weight it puts on the welfare of marine animals. In regards to the
handling of the orcas by trainers, SeaWorld is continually refining and improving ... Show more

Animals are not here for our entertainment. They are living, breathing, beings that deserve a certain
level of respect from a civilized society that is aware and understands the behaviors of these
creatures. It seems barbaric to me that we continue to imprison wild animals that are never going to
be domesticated––a fact that we are well aware of. The educational benefits that society receives
from organizations such as SeaWorld is an invaluable experience, but I believe there are more
humane ways to engage communities in the education and welfare of animals that are not native to
us. I think it is a hard argument to make that I would not care about the wellbeing of an animal just
because I had not seen it up close and personal. There are a variety of other ways to achieve the

Zoos Should Not Be Allowed To Hold Animals In Captivity?
Zoos have become a very visited place over a person's lifetime, whether it be for an educational
school field trip or for a day of fun. It's a wonderful experience to be able to see animals up close in
a controlled environment, keeping visitors safe from these animals, however do visitors think of
what the animals are going through? Zoos are not providing enough space for captivated animals to
live causing numerous problems not only involving the animals, but some visitors as well. Zoos
should not be allowed to hold animals in captivity unless they significantly increase the size of each
cage (change cage into something else). Animals are deprived of their natural habitat when
transferred from the wild open space of the wild only to be fenced inside a limited habitat. Peta.org
explains "Elephants typically walk up to 30 miles in just one day, but Lucy, the lone elephant at the
Edmonton Zoo, is locked inside a barn... spends most of her time indoors...". This doesn't only apply
to elephants, but to many other animals. Preventing them from thriving, because of the limited space
provided per animal. Additionally, this leads to health problems because of the restricted amount of
movement, health problems like arthritis. However zoos are not only causing physical harm, but
mentally making animals sick causing many cases of depression. Trapping animals in cages stressed
them out and can make them unhappy taking matters into their own hands trying to kill themselves

Against Zoo Research Paper
The topic of zoos and whether or not they're humane have quickly become one of the biggest
controversial topics in the past twenty years. There is not much of a 'middle' perspective in this
debate, rather people tend to lie on two completely opposite ends of the spectrum when displaying
their beliefs pertaining to the zoo debate. I chose to research this topic because though I have strong
beliefs, I think that, on this matter specifically, people often jump to a certain side without any prior
research or actual education on the subject. I think that it's important to understand both sides of the
argument of zoos before sustaining a side. Another reason why I chose this topic was to moreso
educate myself and to make sure that the knowledge I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are animal preservation groups that don't require putting these wide ranges of species in
captivity. Their sole purpose is to help injured animals or species that are going extinct, and release
them back into the wild where they belong. I think that zoos should be abolished unless they change
into sanctuaries where injured animals are taken in, helped, and released back into the wild
immediately. Zoos would still be allowed to do this in front of public eyes. Animals should never be
held captive and "research" is never an excuse. Animals can be researched while in the wild where
they are in their most natural and happy state. Zoos do not do this. Zoos claim that they are helping
animal species when in reality they're hurting them and torturing animals to the point of depression
and insanity. There is no justification for shooting animals when they act up because they shouldn't
be in those situations in the first place. Animal instincts should not change. Wild animals aren't
meant to be 'tamed' in order to provide entertainment to the public. Most zoo visitors say they don't
take away any real connection afterwards so zoos really don't have any righteous or moral

Allowing Marine Parks To Keep Marine Mammals
The main thesis presented in the essay is whether to allow marine parks to keep marine mammals.
The first main argument Bill Daly's presents is the fact that individuals would rather see marine
mammals in the wild life than captured inside a tank. Bill Daly's states "In fact, there are more
places where they can be seen in wild than places where they can be seen in captivity" (Daly 2016,
p.469). This argument presents the fact that many of the places people visit have many areas to see
marine mammals in the wild, which is an option many tourist would prefer. The second argument
presented in the essay is that when it comes to research of marine mammals, marine parks are only
useful to study animals that are captured. Bill Daly states "Dolphin

The Importance Of Keeping Animals Captive In Zoos And...
Given that over five million animals are kept in zoos and aquariums around the world, ethical
questions about keeping animals in such environments should be given serious consideration
(Garner 2005: 140). In this essay, I shall evaluate the practice of keeping animals captive in zoos
and aquariums from a utilitarian perspective, an approach which I will offer reasons for adopting. In
doing so, I will reflect upon what it means to be held captive in such institutions, before critically
analysing the main justifications that are used in support of zoos and aquariums. Namely, that they
supply worthwhile benefits in terms of providing amusement, education, research possibilities, and,
that they assist in wildlife conservation. But first, I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
2012). Conversely, once it is determined that an entity can experience things such as pain, this alone
should be enough to make those capable, considerate of the entity 's interests. Singer states it
clearly: "If a being suffers, there can be no moral justification for refusing to take that suffering into
consideration" (Singer 1993: 57). It is important to pause here and note that there is no restriction on
the type of being that, because it can suffer, would compel us to give it consideration. Sentience
alone is enough, regardless of characteristics such as age, sex, stage in foetal development, or
importantly, species (Bentham 1907).
In terms of non–human animals, based on behavioural studies and the physiological similarities
between the nervous systems of humans and non–human animals, we can confidently infer that they
can feel pain (Dawkins 2006). As early as 1951, British governmental committees on animals said
the following; "...we believe that the physiological, more particularly the anatomical, evidence fully
justifies and reinforces the common–sense belief that animals feel pain" (Singer 2000: 39). And
more recently, in 2012, a group of international scientists came together and asserted that many
non–human animals, particularly mammals and birds, are not only sentient, but are also conscious,
much the same as humans, arguing that many animals are endowed with the necessary
neurophysiological structures

Animals Of Zoos And Aquariums
Keeping animals in zoos and aquariums dates back in 1963 when the first zoo the in Paris, France.
The main purposes of zoos were to educate science and natural history of animals and todayhave are
used for entertainment, education and even scientific research. So far there are about 3000 animal
exhibitors held in the US, and they include zoos, petting farms, marine mammal parks and circuses
among others. Out of these, less than 10% are approved by Association of Zoos and Aquariums
(AZA) which sets high standards of care to animals held in zoos and aquariums in the world. Every
animal exhibitor is considered a zoo regardless of whether they abide by AZA standards or not.
Though to all animal activists love animals, some respect them because they believe they have the
right to live in conducive habitants in the world while zoos that meet best standards present a
challenge to advocates who love animals because they get an opportunity to interact and see
animals. This paper is going to present various arguments on holding animals in zoos and aquariums
by considering varying opinions and then conclude with a perspective that is most justifiable.
Arguments against zoos and aquariums
People who have visited ad worked in zoos usually bring disturbing facts about how zoos are
managed and operated and how animals are treated. Considering not all zoos are good, it is no doubt
that not all animals are kept perfectly as much as many advocates of animals wish.Moreso, there are

Essay On Animal Captivity
Jess Ramsey English 3 16 May 2017 Captive Creatures–Yay or Nay? The issue on whether or not to
keep animals in captivity has been debated heavily for a long time. With species such as the panda
on the verge of extinction to mistreatment of marine mammals in theme parks such as Sea World,
keeping wild animals under the care of humans has been a struggle and a highly controversial topic.
Even though many people believe that animals should not be kept in captivity because humans are
incapable of fully understanding and providing specific needs for wild animals, certain animals can
be kept happy and healthy in captivity, and these animals are an important educational tool for
teaching people of all ages about biology, biodiversity, and the ecosystems of the world. For one
thing, many animals in captivity are animals that were found sick or injured, and are being nursed
back to health. Danielle Pucillo, a previous volunteer at a zoo, states, "the zoo where I volunteered
rehabilitated various birds of prey, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Savannah Miller, another author, animals born in captivity are not able to return to the
wild. Miller states, "From the first minute of life, animals born in captivity are exposed to humans
and captive–animal care customs. Because of brain development patterns and learned behaviors
during infancy, captive infants do not have the ability to survive in their natural habitats. Release
creates anxiety for the animal, as they cannot acclimate to the 'foreign' environment, and eventually
they perish either by predation or exposure. By keeping them in captivity we save them from certain
death." Of course, this could lead to an argument against breeding animals in captivity, but many of
the captive–born animals are likely born unintentionally. Releasing captive–born animals into the
wild may end with them going right back to captivity, as one of the sick or injured animals in need

Persuasive Essay On Zoos And Aquariums
According to AZA more than 195 million visitors explore zoos, aquariums, and circuses annually,
but do the visitors really understand the conditions associated with the three attractions? Families
around the globe love their pets and would do anything for them to have a excellent life. Yet families
allow exotic wild animals to be put in small–scale cramped enclosures, forced to be seen by
thousands of visitors each day. Zoos, aquariums, and circuses have a reputation as being excellent
research and learning centers. However, the conditions of zoos, circuses, and aquariums are actually
harmful to the animals they contain. According to the AZA 751,931 animals are kept inside zoos,

Although, the aquariums around the world are most criticized by animal rights groups and animal
welfare activists. "The aquarium is one of the most criticized by animal rights groups because of the
deaths since 1981 of two dolphins and a beluga whale. The dolphins apparently suffered from stress,
and the whale died of a bacterial infection" (Graham Caleca 3). The death of animals inside
aquariums is a ground–breaking edge that animal rights activists have on the aquariums around the
world. The use of dolphins and whales for water amusement park shows has caused Richard O'Barry
to say, "What you have there in Indiana and across the country are dolphin abusement parks."
Additionally, Richard also pronounced, "Dolphins and whales communicate by emitting sounds,
being in a tank is like living in a room full of mirrors." The poor conditions whales and dolphins
face inside holding pens are subpar leading animal rights activists to stop the seizure of dolphins and
whales. For example, "In Louisville, Karem and other organizers of a proposed aquarium are
seriously reconsidering including whales and dolphins, after receiving an avalanche of letters and
phone calls from animal rights groups" (Graham Caleca 5). The fact is, animals such as dolphins and
whales are subject to horrible conditions inside of aquariums. To illustrate, "Marine mammals' life
expectancy is about 10 years in captivity, compared to 30 years in the ocean" (Graham Caleca 5).
Now understanding the gruesome conditions marine mammals face in aquariums, the push to shut
down the capture of dolphins and whales is on for animal welfare

SeaWorld rescues and saves over 27,000 sea animals each year. That is a lot of sea animals that are
given a second chance at life. What do you think would happen if SeaWorld was not allowed to help

should be allowed to be held in aquariums and marine parks (captivity).
When these sea animals are held in captivity, they help contribute to research of their species.
Researchers at SeaWorld learned that mother killer whale's vocalization repertoires were passed on
to their calves from generation to generation. Basically the killer whale calves learn words from
their mothers, like we do. Dr. Barlow from Busch Gardens learned the vocalizations of hippos when
they are above and underwater. Using a lighted pad, they have trained hippos to respond to various
tones when they are under the water. If sea animals were not held in aquariums or marine parks

Watching Wild Animals : The Documentary Blackfish Last Year
Ever since I was a little girl I loved animals. One of my favorite things to do was to spend the day at
the zoo or visit an aquarium where I would have the chance to see some of my favorite animals.
Each time I would go there it would be a breath–taking experience. Watching wild animals from up
close, see them interacting with each other was just amazing to me. But as I got older I started
realizing that it doesn't matter how much I am pleased to be able to see these animals through a glass

unfortunately, have the cruelty to capture these animals from their natural habitats, against their own

Their diet consists of fish, squids, sea birds, turtles, and other big mammals, like sea lions, sharks
and whales (Alina Bradford par.7). These animals are easily found because they have a very good
adaption when it comes to experiencing different climates; orcas are the most widely distributed
mammals, other than humans, according to SeaWorld. Weighting up to 6 tons, and growing up to a
size of a typical school bus, killer whales are acknowledged as the largest species of the dolphin
family.
Killer whales are captured in the wild for a number of reasons: fisherman feel the need to kill them
because they might eat all of their means of support, other cultures capture them for alimentation,
and lastly they are captured to be used as attractions in amusement parks such as SeaWorld. Years
ago, a group of killer whales were captured in Puget Sound, in the state of Washington. Knowing
that men might try to capture them the orcas used a technique to keep their young ones safe. The
pod would separate, while the male adults would go west, the adult females with the young ones
would go north, but this tactic did not work because the fisherman also had air control so they were
watching every movement in the sea. Using seal bombs and a net, they trapped only the younger
whales leaving their mothers on the opposite side making high vocals of grief. Three whales were
found dead in the net, so the fisherman cut them

Life In Captivity: Seaworld
Life in Captivity As a young child there has been so many commercials about how SeaWorld is such
an amazing place for marine life animals, yet what we do not know is that most of these animals

ourselves were held in captivity. Although awareness needs to be brought to this issue, it can make
this situation a touchy subject. However, awareness does need to be brought to attention of people
who support these amusement parks. The life of orca whales held in captivity are dangerous and
have suffered a great amount of distress. In 2013 CNN made a documentary called "Blackfish" were
it shows how the life of orca whales have been in captivity. Orca whales are such an amazing and

Although there are zoos that do participate in conserving endangered animals many zoos are doing
the opposite. According to an article published in the Huffington Times, "the Copenhagen Zoo took

happy life there." This zoo also killed four healthy lions to make room for a new lion cub and the
European Association of Zoos and Aquaria stated that 3,000 to 5,000 animals are killed in zoos to

The Pros And Cons Of Animals In Zoos
''According to CNN, animal advocacy group Born Free reports that there have been 256 injuries in
zoos due to animal attacks over the past 26 years, resulting in 33 deaths.'' Every single year there are
many animals killed or injured in zoo's. There are numerous zoo's placed all over the United States.
The zoo's keep the animals trapped in a fenced in enclosure with little to no water source or spacious
area. Numerous people disagree with the fact various breeds are mixed in the same enclosure.
People believe that animals should be allowed to enjoy their own natural habitat and live with their
families, and not trapped within enclosures.
In the wild, elephants often walk up to 30 miles a day. Bears are very active animals, they roam
around hundreds of miles exploring, and are normally active for 18 or more hours a day. Tigers and
lions will roam for many miles just to hunt down their pray, and love to run and climb on things. But
when these animals are imprisoned in cages and small enclosures at the zoo, they aren't capable of
living up to their natural instincts. "Living without these important things often causes "zoochosis"
is a condition in which animals act strangely and even hurt themselves out of boredom and
frustration". Some don't realize all the cons of animals being kept in a zoo.
Since visitors love seeing baby animals at zoos, several zoos breed animals to make more babies,
and, as a result, create more profit. When these babies grow up, though, they aren't as popular. Zoos
often trade, loan, or sell adult animals who aren't making them as much money as when they were
younger. Can you even imagine someone getting rid of you just because you weren't a baby
anymore? These sad, unwanted animals may end up in roadside zoos or traveling circuses. Others
are simply bought to be killed. For example, when baby animals who were displayed in the
Minnesota Zoo's farm exhibit grew up and didn't attract as many visitors, the zoo took them to
livestock auctions, where many ended up being sent to slaughter. When people go to zoos they have
no idea of these things.
Possibly the biggest lie that zoos tell people is that by visiting them, people will learn about wild
animals. If zoos are teaching

Benefits Of Keeping Marine Animals In Zoos
Keeping marine mammals and fish in aquariums in zoos is stressful for the fish; marine mammals
and fish can thrive in captivity, but they can only do so under safe and secure conditions. These
mammals should be kept in marine sanctuaries. Marine sanctuaries are a portion of the ocean where
the government controls the activity and interference of humans. These sanctuaries are designed for
scientific research and recreation. Fish and marine mammals are not meant to be confined to a small
and unhappy environment, where humans enjoy staring at the fish's "home." The Humane Society of
the United States explains their opinion in their article, "Keeping Marine Mammals in Captivity is
Cruel Exploitation" that keeping these wild mammals is wrong and only for "the public's
amusement." The Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums believes that keeping these
marine mammals in zoos benefits the health of the fish and educates the public. The Alliance of
Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums makes sure education is the top priority of every worker;
they rescue, rehabilitate, and release marine mammals and fish that are abandoned and helpless.
Their main goal is to educate the public about their work and to hopefully release the fish back into
its home in the ocean. Unfortunately, some of the marine mammals and fish are too frail and weak to
be released back into the ocean. If this is the case, the Alliance members will provide a safe and
friendly home for the helpless marine mammal.

Whales In Captivity
I do not agree that whales should be kept in captivity. It is not fair for whales. Even if it entertains
us, they should not be forced to do what they don't want to do, such as: do tricks. While we are
being entertained, they are trapped in a tub, away from their family, and stuck there until finally
released. First, they should not be in captivity because they will be used to the little container they
are kept in. They will forget how to survive. It would be too late for them to be let out into the wild.
People that capture the whales don't even care about the whales! They only care what will benefit
them: money. That is another reason why it is not fair to the whales. In addition, I think you should
leave them in the wild because the ocean

Sharks Should Not Be Kept In Captivity Essay
Sharks are a unique and aggressive fish that are an endangered species because of the human threat.
They are not made for captivity or to be show pieces. No animal should be kept in captivity
especially anything aggressive as sharks. Sharks of any kind should not be kept in captivity because
they need their freedom, they will get depressed, and they are natural hunters. Sharks need their
freedom because aquariums cannot provide adequate and appropriate space they need to wander
around. They are not made for an aquarium. They can swim up to hundreds of kilometers in a day,
but they cannot do all their wandering in a small tank. They can't reach their speed in a tank because
of their fear of hitting the glass walls. Sharks are not able to make sharp turns so they would need no
obstacles in able to do so. When sharks are kept in captivity they will get depressed and stressed out
because they know they're not in their natural environment. The sharks that migrate hundreds of

They are expensive animals to feed. They will kill and attack the other animals in the tank when
they are not supposed to. Which makes it expensive for the aquarium's because they have to refill
the tank with other sea creatures. If there is other sharks in the tank they will sometimes attack and
kill them. Sharks usually eat live prey and the aquariums can't provide live animals for the shark to
eat. It is expensive and difficult for them to do. They don't like being fed by humans and they don't
like food that is already killed. Most sharks kept in captivity will refuse to eat. When sharks hit their
nose on the glass in the tank it makes them lose their appetite which can give them a greater risk to
die. When the aquarium staff provides them already dead and frozen fish they don't get all the
nutrients that they need to stay

Zoos In The Zoo
Even in the midst of a technological revolution, we try to preserve the natural greens and wildlife;
be it parks, pets, or small house plants. The society today might regard a zoo for its famed wild
animals standing high and mighty within the concrete jungle, but is that what truly happens in
confinement as well?
Zoos are first and foremost for people not animals. Zoos exist to serve the human gaze though they
portray themselves as the arks of the animal kingdom, safeguarding the future of biodiversity. And it
is true that many zoos do have conservation, breeding, and reintroduction programs, which are
certainly noble projects. But what about the rest of the animals that are not endangered? At the
National Zoo, only one in five of the animals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Others might argue that zoos preserve species whose habitat has been destroyed or wiped out. The
zoos suggest that they sustain the species in captivity until the cause of expiration is fixed, and then
successfully reintroduce the animals to the wild, resulting in a healthy, self–sustaining population
but in truth. Animal theme parks are basically zoos; however, they are more into the entertainment
aspect of the animals for the people, at the animals' expense. Animal theme parks, such as Sea
World, tend to show off the animals, ride the animal, and put them on display for the tourists'
entertainment.
We, as humans, take our own liberty quite seriously. Indeed, we consider liberty to be one of our

animals, who, because they cannot defend themselves against our sophisticated methods of capture

Introduction
I. No one deserves to live caged, neither the whales.
II. Today, I will talk about the problem of keeping whales in captivity and how to overcome it.
III. Since I have made a lot of research about this topic, I am confident and qualified to speak about
this topic.
IV. First, I am going to tell what the problem is. Then, I will tell you some effects of it. Finally, I will
tell you the best solution to overcome this problem.
(Transition: Let me begin by telling what the problem is)
Body
I. Killer Whales, better known as Orcas, have been kept in captivity since 1961. Victims of the
entertainment industry, these Killer Whales were captured from their families in their natural order
and forced to live in small artificial tanks, killing and hurting a lot of whales.
A. Although they may live for many years entertaining audiences, the stressors of captivity catch up
them.
1. According to Rose, very few captive whales have reached their midlife, approximately forty five
for females and thirty years for males, and no one has ever come close to old age, sixty for males
and eighty for females. The captive orcas are dying very young in comparison with wild orca
standards (Rose).

Animals Should Be Free From Zoos
People suffer from stress and feel horrible well animals in captivity suffer from stress. Animals are
aware to feel things such as boredom and imprisonment. Animals should not be captured nor
confined. First of all, animals should be free from zoos because they are stuck in small so–call
habitats and could eventually become violent to the public. Animals just don't become violent to the
public but they could have strange behaviours such as pacing, rocking, or even self harm in the form
of hair pulling, self biting and feather plucking. Also, animals in aquariums and marine parks should
be free because they are enclosed in cramped small tanks.Tilikum was a healthy orca before he was
captured in Iceland and taken to Florida Sea World. His fin was collapsed because of unnatural
environment unfortunately Tilikum was announced dead on January 6, 2017 due to a lung infection
of bacterial pneumonia. In addition, circus animals are forced to perform difficult tricks when they
should be free. Bears have to balance on balls and elephants standing on two legs are not natural for
animals. During circus acts if the animals don't perform the tricks they will whip, muzzle, electric
pods, and bullhooks them as a reminder. Imprisoning animals for the public entertainment is not
okay. Animals have the right to be free from zoos, aquariums, and circuses.
When animals are taken from the wild and bought into the zoos they become a thing. A zoo in
Bangladesh has left visitors in fear because of a

Studying animals in captivity allows scientists to achieve up–close research that cannot be obtained
from animals in the wild. Seaworld helps "provide researchers the unique advantage of animals that
are trained and able to cooperate".This type of research is crucial to protect the species in the ocean,
especially those that are endangered. Observing captive animals can be done on a daily basis for
longer periods of time. It also gives researchers a "controlled setting for science that is impossible to
replicate in the wild". By working with universities and government agencies, Seaworld is
enhancing their knowledge and understanding of killer whales in order to help protect the species in

This study helps wild whales and their habitats. The main focus of the research was on the
endangered Southern Resident Whale and the decline on their leading food source. Knowing the
food requirements of the whales helps scientists and biologists analyze the impact of the decreasing
food source and the whales. Another study done by Seaworld was on the reproductive patterns of
killer whales. "More than 80 percent of marine mammals at our [Seaworld] parks were born in the
care of humans." These animals provide important findings on development and growth rates that
would be difficult to study in the wild. In addition to the research conducted on metabolic rates and
reproductive patterns of whales, Seaworld has been contributing to long–term research on whale
vocal patterns. This study provides insights on the variations in vocal patterns and helps improve
knowledge on communication. Wild killer whale vocalizations can be monitored, but captive killer
whales allow scientists to study specific individuals over longer periods of time. In addition to
acquiring a better understanding of marine mammals, Seaworld also helps to provide an educational

Persuasive Speech On Animal Entertainment
Think about how we will look back on our cruel forms of entertainment in the future. Will we be
proud of the way we treated these great animals, with abuse as neglect? Today we turn our heads
away from reality and what happens behind the scenes of animal entertainment. However, we can't
turn our heads forever. Around the world, there is so much more to animal entertainment than what
meets the eye. These animals have been torn away from their beautiful, natural homes and brought
to a prison of concrete. In these prisons, they are beaten, starved and tortured all for our money and
entertainment. These animals lives should not be taken from them for us. Our money and happiness
should not be worth these animal's lives. Circus, theme park and zoo animals all suffer from
aggression towards trainers, mental disabilities and physical injuries. These animals should not have
to suffer any longer. Not only do the animals get hurt from animal entertainment, the trainers do too.
Many wild animal trainers suffer from injuries or even fatalities. Many zoo, circus, and theme park
workers get seriously injured from these wild animal's "revenge". Injuries from animals in captivity,
like large cats, are very common. After being cooped up, in cages and trains, it would be expected
for these wild animals to be aggressive towards humans. Since 1990 there have been at least 123
attacks on humans from caged, large cats. Most of us see just the "kill" part of these facts and

What Are Zoos Good Or Bad For Animals?
A question that has been debated for a very long time is, are zoos good or bad for animals? People
have there opinions, and they back up their opinions with facts, facts that are true, but there are
always facts for each side of the argument. Zoos have been around for over a hundred years and they
have been adored and despised by many people. In the United States alone they have about 180
million visitors a year. Something about see animals in real life draws the attention of society. These
articles i'm going to talk about on the positives and negatives of zoos display the nature of zoos that

One illness is zoochosis, which is abnormal animal behavior this refers to animals behavior in a
psychotic way, and because of this some animals need to have therapy or be put on a special drug.
Surprisingly lots of zoos put their animals on drugs and medication. Another illness similar to
zoochosis is ABR(abnormal repetitive behavior), this refers to strange odd looking behaviors
animals develop because of stress, boredom, and depression. What's making this worse is some
animals, for example dolphins, are made to do unnatural behaviors for show purposes, like doing
tricks for an audience like dolphins and whales do. These illnesses are a major problem in all zoos.
The last topic is about animals called surplus animals. Surplus animals are unwanted animals that
zoos have no reason to keep. There could be no more space or they provide nothing for the zoo.
Zoos almost always have an overproduction of animals. So the shocking truth about what they do to
these surplus animals is that they do a few cruel things like they can kill them, sell them to people
for different reasons, or they might even feed these animals to other animals in the zoo. The
negatives of zoos can be changed through devotion and hard work, and through these traits a bad

The Cove Dolphins
Approximately 20,000 dolphins are killed legally every year and thousands more are sold
inhumanely in Taiji, Japan. The majority of these dolphins are sold to marine parks and aquariums
around the world. Louie Psihoyos and Ric O'Barry's eye–opening documentary The Cove raises
awareness about the gruesome killings of dolphins in Japan. Ironically Ric O'Barry feels that he
initiated this problem, as he was one of the first dolphin trainers/capturers in the 1960's for the show
Flipper. After witnessing the star, "Flipper the Bottlenose–Dolphin" commit suicide in his arms, he
became a marine activist, which led to the production of this documentary to stop the problem he
created. Louie and Rick expose the plight of the dolphin, the potential ... Show more content on

The universal image of the dolphin portrays the illusion that dolphins are always happy because they
consistently appear to be smiling. This, however, is nature's greatest deception as it is simply the
shape of their mouth. Throughout the film the juxtaposition of the beauty of nature is harshly
contrasted with the ugliness of the underlying secrets of the industry in Japan and around the world.
The fishing industry is largest in Japan therefore that is where this movie was filmed. The captive
industry has become a lucrative billion–dollar worldwide trade, with all money made from the
exploitation, imprisonment and lifelong suffering of these living beings. A live dolphin captured for
a marine mammal park can be valued up to $200,000. The most shocking fact is that this is legal.
The International Whaling Commission outlawed commercial whaling in 1986, but dolphin hunts
remain legal. The film's impact was largely due to the emotional ties between O'Barry and dolphins.
Although the filmmakers are extremely biased, his convincing pleads for our help are strategically
made at the most emotional moments. He believes that bottlenose dolphins are being hunted the
most "The fishermen are searching for bottlenose dolphins like flipper". Luckily this type of dolphin
is not yet endangered but this

Zoos And The Conservation Of Animals
A family is enjoying a trip to their local zoo when they stop to look at the tigers. The child sprints
over to exhibit with excitement; he notices a red sign stuck the glass of the enclosure which reads,
Endangered. "Daddy, if the zoo is keeping the tigers in a cage in order to save them, when will they
let them back into the wild to live free?" Based on statistics from public zoos across America, the
unfortunate answer to this question is a resounding '"Never." It has become noticeably evident that
zoos are not a current resource for the protection of rare and endangered species. Animals should not
be kept in zoos, because they fail at the conservation of animal species, provide little or no
education about habitat and the behavior of animals, and harm the animals physically and mentally.
Primarily, zoos fail at the conservation of animal species. Zoos claim that certain species would
become extinct if places like zoos did not exist, but they ultimately fail at the conservation of animal
species. Animals who are endangered will likely never be released back into natural habitats ("Zoos:
Pitiful Prisons" par. 9). The Author of Captive Animal Protection Society states, "Many zoos have
no contact of any kind with any reintroduction program," meaning that once the animals are
introduced to zoos, they are likely to remain there. One U.S. study found no compelling evidence for
zoos and aquariums to make the claim that they promote interest of conservation upon conversing

accusing them of mistreating their animals, yet, SeaWorld continually complies, meet and exceed

back to 1959, when Busch Gardens started. Busch Gardens is a zoological park, "the country's first

The Common Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) are probably the most popular species of
dolphins around. Coming under the order of Cetecea and the family of Delphinidae, the bottlenose
dolphins are closely related to whales and are highly intelligent creatures (source 7). They are
widely distributed around the world in the deep tropical and sub–tropical seas as well as other warm
regions. For this reason, there is no recorded global estimate of the number of Bottlenose Dolphins

Captured animal's natural hunting and survival instincts grow dull after living the lax life in a tank.
Upon being released back into the wild, they are unable to fend for themselves and are quickly
hunted by predators. Also, experience has proven that the spectators of educational animal shows
come away with little thought for the welfare of the animals and more for other exciting things like
fun rides, etc. Spectators mostly go to shows not for the education but for the entertainment of
watching different and sometimes "weird" animals perform. Besides, many do not consider the
mental distress that plagues the dolphins that are suddenly brought into captivity to be studied.
Again referring to source 1 and 6, the animals may most likely not be able to adept well and this
may increase their aggression towards their tank–mates as well as show other signs of obvious
mental suffering. What's more, it is obviously not easy to care for these animals, not to mention
costly. Safaris and parks fork out billions a year for the maintenance and care of their animals.
Looking at SeaWorld's impressive facilities as an example, imagine the cost for designing, building
and then maintaining the aquariums, plumbing, dietary needs, etc of the animals. And even then, it is
no match for Mother Nature. Also, the ethical side of dealing with all living things dictates that it is
immoral to interfere with the lives of the dolphins. We violate

captivity. Let's move on and see this side of the debate.
You may be asking yourself why should exotic animals be in captivity and does this benefit them in
any way? The short answer yes let me explain for example the Panamanian golden frog have been
extinct in the wild since 2007 because of a fungal disease thats been in Panama also with destruction

Why Are Zoos Inhumane
Animals in the zoo are inhumane and being held captive? Well, what do you think? Animals in the
zoo aren't inhumane or held captive. They are in there for a good reason like that they are sick or
injured. The animals might not be able to live on their own so they might get placed in a zoo to help
them out. They also are there to help out other animals that need help. They might just be there to be
held to captivity.
In the zoo, there are animals who are sick or injured. They live in the zoo to get medical help. The

Some animals might be just be there to be a friend. One animal might be lonely so they bring in
another animal to help out the lonely, sick, injured animal. Zoos feel that some animals are lonely
and need a buddy so the zoos bring in a buddy to help the other one out.
The third reason is if they are just there to be there, captivity. Many feel that the animals are just
there to be there or for some harsh reason. They aren't held captive but many people still feel that
they are. Truly the animals are usually there to help another animal or because they are sick/injured.
Though many feel they are held captive, they are really there for a good reason. There aren't any
problems but many seem to still feel there are. As humans, the thought is that they are here for us
and here for our convenience.
In the end, there is a good reason that there are animals in the zoo. If anyone feels the animals are
inhumane or held captive, well there really aren't because they are really sick or injured. They also
could be there to help and take care of the other animals. Zoos are taking care of the animals and
they are in there for a good reason. The animals aren't inhumane or held captive but "Living Like

Seaworld's Abuse Of Animals In The Entertainment Industry
Throughout the years, we have been made to believe that wildlife in the entertainment industry is
captivating. Even though these animals may seem to be happy and healthy, the truth is the majority

anxiety the animals are under. Wildlife in captivity for exotic animals can cause a serious amount of
stress along with abuse, anxiety which can lead to a fatal result for the animals and the people who

Importance Of Keeping Animals In Zoos And Aquariums
Given that over five million animals are kept in zoos and aquariums around the world, ethical
questions about keeping animals in such environments should be given serious consideration
(Garner 2005: 140). In this essay, I shall evaluate the practice of keeping animals in zoos and
aquariums from a utilitarian perspective, an approach which I will offer reasons for adopting. In
doing so, I will reflect upon what it means to be held captive in such institutions, before critically
analysing two principal justifications that are used in support of zoos and aquariums. Namely, that
they provide worthwhile benefits in terms of education, and wildlife conservation. But first, I will
consider the moral status of animals, and make a case that animals are indeed deserving of moral
status, which should prompt us to carefully consider whether we can justify keeping them in zoos
and aquariums. To ascribe an entity with moral status is to declare that its treatment by moral agents
is morally important (DeGrazia 2008: 183). Moral status depends upon an entity being, at a basic
level, sentient. This means that it must have the ability to experience sensation or feeling, which will
see it having interests in avoiding sensations like pain, and desiring others, such as pleasure. Without
this basic capacity, and therefore the ability to be harmed, moral status is meaningless and cannot be
awarded to an entity (Jaworska & Tannenbaum 2013). We may think an object, such as a rock, has

against the California Coastal Commission to fight the conditions of the Blue World project which
included forcing SeaWorld to stop captive breeding and the transfer of whales in and out of the park
(Martin). According to Naomi Rose, a marine mammal scientist, "No enclosed sea pens exist to hold
all 11 whales, either as a group or individually. And the cost of building such pens could reach $5
million each, with staffing costs of up to $500,000 a year for each pen," SeaWorld has retaliated
against the attacks that have for the majority stemmed from BlackFish. They responded with pledges
to put millions of more dollars to research of the orcas and expanding their habitats, they introduced
the argument that the business has opened up a world of opportunities when it comes to orca
research. (Martin) The SeaWorld corporation has been open for decades and no one has majorly
voiced an opinion about the closure until recent

Blackfish Documentary Focuses on Orcas in Captivity

  • 1. Blackfish Documentary Blackfish Lori Marino, a neuroscientist says "All Whales in captivity have a bade life. They're all emotionally destroyed. They're all psychologically destroyed." The documentary Blackfish focuses on the fatal effects of taking orcas out of their natural habitat and the tragic deaths that have given a new perspective to what can happen to animals in captivity. Since I'm a big lover of animals, this documentary immediately grabbed my attention. What really kept me on the edge of my seat was the reveal of the horrendous treatment orcas in captivity are subjected to. Gabriela Cowperthwaite, the director and producer of this documentary reveals the harsh treatment of whales in captivity, and what results come from it. Through interviews from former trainers and experts, it is shown what it's like working with killer whales, and that they can be incredibly kind animals who are extremely intelligent. Lori ... Howard has been working with Southern resident orcas of the Pacific Northwest for over 30 years, beginning as a field assistant with the Center for Whale Research. Howard launched the Lolita campaign in 1995, and the Orca Network as it is known today in 2001, which promotes conservation through education and awareness." (Lipman, Orcaaware.org) Dr. Lori Marino is internationally known for her work on the evolution of the brain and intelligence in dolphins and whales. She has published over 130 peer–reviewed scientific papers, book chapters, and magazine articles on marine mammal biology. She is also the founder and director of The Kimmela Center for Animal Advocacy, which combines academic research and animal advocacy efforts. • 3. Animals Should Not Be Held Captivity Jennifer Smith McGowen English 4 20 October 2017 Rough Draft Animals Should Not Be Held in Captivity Animal captivity has been an ongoing debate for over 60 years. There should be no question about whether animal captivity is wrong. "Hundreds of thousands of wild animals across the world are snatched from natural habitats, forced into captivity and subjected to abuse, both mentally and physically, in the name of entertainment and profit." (World Animal Protection 1) Places such as the circus use abusive training methods such as, hooks, chains, whips, electric rods, and blunt instruments. (Born Free USA 1) Animals deserve to live freely in the wild. Their freedom is taken away the moment they are put in a cage. When animals are brought ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Trainers use severe tactics to get animals to perform tricks. In captivity, dolphins are trained to beach themselves so people can pet or kiss them, but if they stay in that position too long, they will slowly crush their internal organs. In captivity, dolphins are trained through food deprivation and are given food when they perform tricks. When dolphins wave to you, they are hungry and expect food. (World Animal Protection 1) Animals are sometimes given little to no food and water, which are necessities for survival! Animals are often crammed into cages for long periods of time. Them being trapped in such a small place stresses them out and can hurt them physically. Animals in captivity are prone to stress. They show signs of stress through pacing, swaying, and unnatural behavior. One major sign that dolphins show that is considered "unnatural behavior" would be their activities. In the wild, dolphins spend 80% of their time below the surface playing, hunting, exploring, etc. In captivity, dolphins spend 80% of their time above water. (World Animal Protection 1) The second reason animals should not be held in captivity is because the exhibits they live in are too small and not natural to them. Zoos do not provide animals with the proper habitats they need to survive. The habitats are designed to imitate the animal's natural habitat, but are usually not natural. There are large animals, such as, elephants, that do not have the large space they need. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Seaworld Research Paper Captivity Is Cruel "Can you imagine being in a small concrete enclosure for your life when you're used to swimming 100 miles a day?" This is how captive dolphins live everyday, their natural habitat is swimming miles and miles in the ocean. When they get captured their lives change for the worse. In the past decade Seaworld and captive animals has been a controversial subject. Many people believe the keeping orca whales captive is damaging to the animal and affects them in a negative way. Others believe Seaworld is used to rescue animals and save them. The treatment of animals in captivity is cruel and should be stopped. Keeping animals captive is an appalling punishment. First, Seaworld is horrible because animals are treated badly. The conditions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "In the wild, despite centuries of sharing the ocean, there has been only a single reliable report of an orca harming a human being." ("8 Reasons Orcas Don't Belong at SeaWorld"). Due to stress, aggression and other causes, captive whales have killed 3 humans just since 1990s. Captive whales have injured numerous of other humans within that time as well. This proves that keeping whales in their natural habitat is best for humans. Also, most whales are not compatible to be living in small quarters with many other whales, results can be harmful. Sea world of Hurt says; "The resulting anxiety and tension cause fights between orcas." ("8 Reasons Orcas Don't Belong at SeaWorld"). In the wild orca whales have strong social bonds that rarely ever lead to violent fights. However if fights do occur, whales have enough room to get away, captivity leads to several injuries because there is no place for the whales to go. To minimize the amount of violent activity between whales, it best to leave them in their natural environment. Finally, whales are social animals that live in groups differing from two to 15 individuals, everything changes in captivity, for example, "In some populations, children stay with their mothers for life." ("8 Reasons Orcas Don't Belong at SeaWorld"). When orcas are split up with their families, they are put in small tanks with random whales from other family units. They are forced to interact and live with one another even though they may speak different languages. Imagine being taken from your home and out into a random house somewhere around the world. How would you feel? This is what is happening to whales around the world, it should be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Analysis Of The Documentary ' Blackfish ' Sea World rebuttal was not considered in the documentary of "Blackfish" which clearly defines the bias views of the creator. So without choice, viewers are marked to take the side of the creator or leave the documentary feeling like a kid in a fine china shop, unable to touch or lose your balance for fear of shattering the look of the shop. Unfortunately, the problem with animal activist groups is that they force their religious views of animals on others with no other biases to consider. Hence, their real arguments are skewed and we are unable to clearly see the real poignant side without the opinions. There are significant arguments on both sides of the issue, but the real issues are keeping the animals in captivity, keeping them alive, keep the cycle of life continuing to grow and produce all that nature intended. Many believe for the purpose of learning more about ourselves as humans with have the right to explore our possibilities with the similarities of those of the mammal species. Theses people argue for the acceptable need for capturing the animals in the wild and keep them in a protected environment, there are several points to stated and generally cited. Theses include: Captivity kills orcas. Very few captive orcas make it to midlife (approximately 30 years for males and 45 for females) and not one out of more than 200 held in captivity has ever come close to old age (60 for males, 80 for females). • 9. Seafish Pros And Cons Since the Blackfish documentary viewed on CNN and Netflix, SeaWorld has been facing the criticisms highlighted in the film. They contend they are the world's most respected zoological institution and the global leader in marine mammal veterinary care, husbandry, training, and welfare" (Burford). SeaWorld rehabilitates and returns hundred of wild animals back to their homes each year along with donating millions of dollars to conservation and scientific research. Though this in itself is not a good argument for being allowed to keep their orcas, it shows the prestige the organization carries and the weight it puts on the welfare of marine animals. In regards to the handling of the orcas by trainers, SeaWorld is continually refining and improving ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Animals are not here for our entertainment. They are living, breathing, beings that deserve a certain level of respect from a civilized society that is aware and understands the behaviors of these creatures. It seems barbaric to me that we continue to imprison wild animals that are never going to be domesticated––a fact that we are well aware of. The educational benefits that society receives from organizations such as SeaWorld is an invaluable experience, but I believe there are more humane ways to engage communities in the education and welfare of animals that are not native to us. I think it is a hard argument to make that I would not care about the wellbeing of an animal just because I had not seen it up close and personal. • 11. Zoos Should Not Be Allowed To Hold Animals In Captivity? Zoos have become a very visited place over a person's lifetime, whether it be for an educational school field trip or for a day of fun. It's a wonderful experience to be able to see animals up close in a controlled environment, keeping visitors safe from these animals, however do visitors think of what the animals are going through? Zoos are not providing enough space for captivated animals to live causing numerous problems not only involving the animals, but some visitors as well. Zoos should not be allowed to hold animals in captivity unless they significantly increase the size of each cage (change cage into something else). Animals are deprived of their natural habitat when transferred from the wild open space of the wild only to be fenced inside a limited habitat. Peta.org explains "Elephants typically walk up to 30 miles in just one day, but Lucy, the lone elephant at the Edmonton Zoo, is locked inside a barn... spends most of her time indoors...". This doesn't only apply to elephants, but to many other animals. Preventing them from thriving, because of the limited space provided per animal. Additionally, this leads to health problems because of the restricted amount of movement, health problems like arthritis. However zoos are not only causing physical harm, but mentally making animals sick causing many cases of depression. • 13. Against Zoo Research Paper The topic of zoos and whether or not they're humane have quickly become one of the biggest controversial topics in the past twenty years. There is not much of a 'middle' perspective in this debate, rather people tend to lie on two completely opposite ends of the spectrum when displaying their beliefs pertaining to the zoo debate. I chose to research this topic because though I have strong beliefs, I think that, on this matter specifically, people often jump to a certain side without any prior research or actual education on the subject. I think that it's important to understand both sides of the argument of zoos before sustaining a side. Another reason why I chose this topic was to moreso educate myself and to make sure that the knowledge I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are animal preservation groups that don't require putting these wide ranges of species in captivity. Their sole purpose is to help injured animals or species that are going extinct, and release them back into the wild where they belong. I think that zoos should be abolished unless they change into sanctuaries where injured animals are taken in, helped, and released back into the wild immediately. Zoos would still be allowed to do this in front of public eyes. Animals should never be held captive and "research" is never an excuse. Animals can be researched while in the wild where they are in their most natural and happy state. Zoos do not do this. Zoos claim that they are helping animal species when in reality they're hurting them and torturing animals to the point of depression and insanity. There is no justification for shooting animals when they act up because they shouldn't be in those situations in the first place. Animal instincts should not change. Wild animals aren't meant to be 'tamed' in order to provide entertainment to the public. Most zoo visitors say they don't take away any real connection afterwards so zoos really don't have any righteous or moral ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Allowing Marine Parks To Keep Marine Mammals The main thesis presented in the essay is whether to allow marine parks to keep marine mammals. The first main argument Bill Daly's presents is the fact that individuals would rather see marine mammals in the wild life than captured inside a tank. Bill Daly's states "In fact, there are more places where they can be seen in wild than places where they can be seen in captivity" (Daly 2016, p.469). This argument presents the fact that many of the places people visit have many areas to see marine mammals in the wild, which is an option many tourist would prefer. The second argument presented in the essay is that when it comes to research of marine mammals, marine parks are only useful to study animals that are captured. Bill Daly states "Dolphin ... • 17. The Importance Of Keeping Animals Captive In Zoos And... Given that over five million animals are kept in zoos and aquariums around the world, ethical questions about keeping animals in such environments should be given serious consideration (Garner 2005: 140). In this essay, I shall evaluate the practice of keeping animals captive in zoos and aquariums from a utilitarian perspective, an approach which I will offer reasons for adopting. In doing so, I will reflect upon what it means to be held captive in such institutions, before critically analysing the main justifications that are used in support of zoos and aquariums. Namely, that they supply worthwhile benefits in terms of providing amusement, education, research possibilities, and, that they assist in wildlife conservation. But first, I ... Conversely, once it is determined that an entity can experience things such as pain, this alone should be enough to make those capable, considerate of the entity 's interests. Singer states it clearly: "If a being suffers, there can be no moral justification for refusing to take that suffering into consideration" (Singer 1993: 57). It is important to pause here and note that there is no restriction on the type of being that, because it can suffer, would compel us to give it consideration. Sentience alone is enough, regardless of characteristics such as age, sex, stage in foetal development, or importantly, species (Bentham 1907). In terms of non–human animals, based on behavioural studies and the physiological similarities between the nervous systems of humans and non–human animals, we can confidently infer that they can feel pain (Dawkins 2006). As early as 1951, British governmental committees on animals said the following; "...we believe that the physiological, more particularly the anatomical, evidence fully justifies and reinforces the common–sense belief that animals feel pain" (Singer 2000: 39). And more recently, in 2012, a group of international scientists came together and asserted that many non–human animals, particularly mammals and birds, are not only sentient, but are also conscious, much the same as humans, arguing that many animals are endowed with the necessary neurophysiological structures ... • 19. Animals Of Zoos And Aquariums Keeping animals in zoos and aquariums dates back in 1963 when the first zoo the in Paris, France. The main purposes of zoos were to educate science and natural history of animals and todayhave are used for entertainment, education and even scientific research. So far there are about 3000 animal exhibitors held in the US, and they include zoos, petting farms, marine mammal parks and circuses among others. Out of these, less than 10% are approved by Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) which sets high standards of care to animals held in zoos and aquariums in the world. Every animal exhibitor is considered a zoo regardless of whether they abide by AZA standards or not. Though to all animal activists love animals, some respect them because they believe they have the right to live in conducive habitants in the world while zoos that meet best standards present a challenge to advocates who love animals because they get an opportunity to interact and see animals. This paper is going to present various arguments on holding animals in zoos and aquariums by considering varying opinions and then conclude with a perspective that is most justifiable. Arguments against zoos and aquariums People who have visited ad worked in zoos usually bring disturbing facts about how zoos are managed and operated and how animals are treated. Considering not all zoos are good, it is no doubt that not all animals are kept perfectly as much as many advocates of animals wish.Moreso, there are other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Essay On Animal Captivity Jess Ramsey English 3 16 May 2017 Captive Creatures–Yay or Nay? The issue on whether or not to keep animals in captivity has been debated heavily for a long time. With species such as the panda on the verge of extinction to mistreatment of marine mammals in theme parks such as Sea World, keeping wild animals under the care of humans has been a struggle and a highly controversial topic. Even though many people believe that animals should not be kept in captivity because humans are incapable of fully understanding and providing specific needs for wild animals, certain animals can be kept happy and healthy in captivity, and these animals are an important educational tool for teaching people of all ages about biology, biodiversity, and the ecosystems of the world. For one thing, many animals in captivity are animals that were found sick or injured, and are being nursed back to health. Danielle Pucillo, a previous volunteer at a zoo, states, "the zoo where I volunteered rehabilitated various birds of prey, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Savannah Miller, another author, animals born in captivity are not able to return to the wild. Miller states, "From the first minute of life, animals born in captivity are exposed to humans and captive–animal care customs. Because of brain development patterns and learned behaviors during infancy, captive infants do not have the ability to survive in their natural habitats. Release creates anxiety for the animal, as they cannot acclimate to the 'foreign' environment, and eventually they perish either by predation or exposure. By keeping them in captivity we save them from certain death." Of course, this could lead to an argument against breeding animals in captivity, but many of the captive–born animals are likely born unintentionally. Releasing captive–born animals into the wild may end with them going right back to captivity, as one of the sick or injured animals in need of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Persuasive Essay On Zoos And Aquariums According to AZA more than 195 million visitors explore zoos, aquariums, and circuses annually, but do the visitors really understand the conditions associated with the three attractions? Families around the globe love their pets and would do anything for them to have a excellent life. Yet families allow exotic wild animals to be put in small–scale cramped enclosures, forced to be seen by thousands of visitors each day. Zoos, aquariums, and circuses have a reputation as being excellent research and learning centers. However, the conditions of zoos, circuses, and aquariums are actually harmful to the animals they contain. According to the AZA 751,931 animals are kept inside zoos, however not all animals receive the proper treatment they deserve. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although, the aquariums around the world are most criticized by animal rights groups and animal welfare activists. "The aquarium is one of the most criticized by animal rights groups because of the deaths since 1981 of two dolphins and a beluga whale. The dolphins apparently suffered from stress, and the whale died of a bacterial infection" (Graham Caleca 3). The death of animals inside aquariums is a ground–breaking edge that animal rights activists have on the aquariums around the world. The use of dolphins and whales for water amusement park shows has caused Richard O'Barry to say, "What you have there in Indiana and across the country are dolphin abusement parks." Additionally, Richard also pronounced, "Dolphins and whales communicate by emitting sounds, being in a tank is like living in a room full of mirrors." The poor conditions whales and dolphins face inside holding pens are subpar leading animal rights activists to stop the seizure of dolphins and whales. For example, "In Louisville, Karem and other organizers of a proposed aquarium are seriously reconsidering including whales and dolphins, after receiving an avalanche of letters and phone calls from animal rights groups" (Graham Caleca 5). The fact is, animals such as dolphins and whales are subject to horrible conditions inside of aquariums. To illustrate, "Marine mammals' life expectancy is about 10 years in captivity, compared to 30 years in the ocean" (Graham Caleca 5). Now understanding the gruesome conditions marine mammals face in aquariums, the push to shut down the capture of dolphins and whales is on for animal welfare ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What do you think would happen if SeaWorld was not allowed to help these animals and take them in? They wouldn't be saved and would die a suffery death. Sea animals should be allowed to be held in aquariums and marine parks (captivity). When these sea animals are held in captivity, they help contribute to research of their species. Researchers at SeaWorld learned that mother killer whale's vocalization repertoires were passed on to their calves from generation to generation. Basically the killer whale calves learn words from their mothers, like we do. Dr. Barlow from Busch Gardens learned the vocalizations of hippos when they are above and underwater. Using a lighted pad, they have trained hippos to respond to various tones when they are under the water. If sea animals were not held in aquariums or marine parks veterinarians would not be able to know what is healthy and not for their species when there might be something they have never seen especially when they are out in the wild. ... This is how captive dolphins live everyday, their natural habitat is swimming miles and miles in the ocean. When they get captured their lives change for the worse. Finally, whales are social animals that live in groups differing from two to 15 individuals, everything changes in captivity, for example, "In some populations, children stay with their mothers for life." Weighting up to 6 tons, and growing up to a size of a typical school bus, killer whales are acknowledged as the largest species of the dolphin family. Killer whales are captured in the wild for a number of reasons: fisherman feel the need to kill them because they might eat all of their means of support, other cultures capture them for alimentation, and lastly they are captured to be used as attractions in amusement parks such as SeaWorld. Years ago, a group of killer whales were captured in Puget Sound, in the state of Washington. Knowing that men might try to capture them the orcas used a technique to keep their young ones safe. The pod would separate, while the male adults would go west, the adult females with the young ones would go north, but this tactic did not work because the fisherman also had air control so they were watching every movement in the sea. • 35. Life In Captivity: Seaworld Life in Captivity As a young child there has been so many commercials about how SeaWorld is such an amazing place for marine life animals, yet what we do not know is that most of these animals have been held in captivity against their will. Just think about it, these animals' are made to perform day in and day out for a huge crowd, yet we do not stop and think about what it would be like if we ourselves were held in captivity. Although awareness needs to be brought to this issue, it can make this situation a touchy subject. However, awareness does need to be brought to attention of people who support these amusement parks. The life of orca whales held in captivity are dangerous and have suffered a great amount of distress. In 2013 CNN made a documentary called "Blackfish" were it shows how the life of orca whales have been in captivity. Orca whales are such an amazing and beautiful creature; however, it is not right that these whales are kidnapped so young. • 39. The Pros And Cons Of Animals In Zoos ''According to CNN, animal advocacy group Born Free reports that there have been 256 injuries in zoos due to animal attacks over the past 26 years, resulting in 33 deaths.'' Every single year there are many animals killed or injured in zoo's. There are numerous zoo's placed all over the United States. The zoo's keep the animals trapped in a fenced in enclosure with little to no water source or spacious area. Numerous people disagree with the fact various breeds are mixed in the same enclosure. People believe that animals should be allowed to enjoy their own natural habitat and live with their families, and not trapped within enclosures. In the wild, elephants often walk up to 30 miles a day. Bears are very active animals, they roam around hundreds of miles exploring, and are normally active for 18 or more hours a day. Tigers and lions will roam for many miles just to hunt down their pray, and love to run and climb on things. But when these animals are imprisoned in cages and small enclosures at the zoo, they aren't capable of living up to their natural instincts. "Living without these important things often causes "zoochosis" is a condition in which animals act strangely and even hurt themselves out of boredom and frustration". Some don't realize all the cons of animals being kept in a zoo. Since visitors love seeing baby animals at zoos, several zoos breed animals to make more babies, and, as a result, create more profit. When these babies grow up, though, they aren't as popular. Zoos often trade, loan, or sell adult animals who aren't making them as much money as when they were younger. Can you even imagine someone getting rid of you just because you weren't a baby anymore? These sad, unwanted animals may end up in roadside zoos or traveling circuses. Others are simply bought to be killed. For example, when baby animals who were displayed in the Minnesota Zoo's farm exhibit grew up and didn't attract as many visitors, the zoo took them to livestock auctions, where many ended up being sent to slaughter. When people go to zoos they have no idea of these things. Possibly the biggest lie that zoos tell people is that by visiting them, people will learn about wild animals. If zoos are teaching ... • 41. Benefits Of Keeping Marine Animals In Zoos Keeping marine mammals and fish in aquariums in zoos is stressful for the fish; marine mammals and fish can thrive in captivity, but they can only do so under safe and secure conditions. These mammals should be kept in marine sanctuaries. Marine sanctuaries are a portion of the ocean where the government controls the activity and interference of humans. These sanctuaries are designed for scientific research and recreation. Fish and marine mammals are not meant to be confined to a small and unhappy environment, where humans enjoy staring at the fish's "home." The Humane Society of the United States explains their opinion in their article, "Keeping Marine Mammals in Captivity is Cruel Exploitation" that keeping these wild mammals is wrong and only for "the public's amusement." The Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums believes that keeping these marine mammals in zoos benefits the health of the fish and educates the public. The Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums makes sure education is the top priority of every worker; they rescue, rehabilitate, and release marine mammals and fish that are abandoned and helpless. Their main goal is to educate the public about their work and to hopefully release the fish back into its home in the ocean. Unfortunately, some of the marine mammals and fish are too frail and weak to be released back into the ocean. Surprisingly lots of zoos put their animals on drugs and medication. Another illness similar to zoochosis is ABR(abnormal repetitive behavior), this refers to strange odd looking behaviors animals develop because of stress, boredom, and depression. What's making this worse is some animals, for example dolphins, are made to do unnatural behaviors for show purposes, like doing tricks for an audience like dolphins and whales do. These illnesses are a major problem in all zoos. The last topic is about animals called surplus animals. Surplus animals are unwanted animals that zoos have no reason to keep. There could be no more space or they provide nothing for the zoo. Zoos almost always have an overproduction of animals. So the shocking truth about what they do to these surplus animals is that they do a few cruel things like they can kill them, sell them to people for different reasons, or they might even feed these animals to other animals in the zoo. The negatives of zoos can be changed through devotion and hard work, and through these traits a bad zoos can become a great ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. The Cove Dolphins Approximately 20,000 dolphins are killed legally every year and thousands more are sold inhumanely in Taiji, Japan. The majority of these dolphins are sold to marine parks and aquariums around the world. Louie Psihoyos and Ric O'Barry's eye–opening documentary The Cove raises awareness about the gruesome killings of dolphins in Japan. Ironically Ric O'Barry feels that he initiated this problem, as he was one of the first dolphin trainers/capturers in the 1960's for the show Flipper. After witnessing the star, "Flipper the Bottlenose–Dolphin" commit suicide in his arms, he became a marine activist, which led to the production of this documentary to stop the problem he created. Louie and Rick expose the plight of the dolphin, the potential ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The universal image of the dolphin portrays the illusion that dolphins are always happy because they consistently appear to be smiling. This, however, is nature's greatest deception as it is simply the shape of their mouth. Throughout the film the juxtaposition of the beauty of nature is harshly contrasted with the ugliness of the underlying secrets of the industry in Japan and around the world. The fishing industry is largest in Japan therefore that is where this movie was filmed. The captive industry has become a lucrative billion–dollar worldwide trade, with all money made from the exploitation, imprisonment and lifelong suffering of these living beings. A live dolphin captured for a marine mammal park can be valued up to $200,000. The most shocking fact is that this is legal. The International Whaling Commission outlawed commercial whaling in 1986, but dolphin hunts remain legal. The film's impact was largely due to the emotional ties between O'Barry and dolphins. Although the filmmakers are extremely biased, his convincing pleads for our help are strategically made at the most emotional moments. He believes that bottlenose dolphins are being hunted the most "The fishermen are searching for bottlenose dolphins like flipper". Luckily this type of dolphin is not yet endangered but this ... • 63. Zoos And The Conservation Of Animals A family is enjoying a trip to their local zoo when they stop to look at the tigers. The child sprints over to exhibit with excitement; he notices a red sign stuck the glass of the enclosure which reads, Endangered. "Daddy, if the zoo is keeping the tigers in a cage in order to save them, when will they let them back into the wild to live free?" Based on statistics from public zoos across America, the unfortunate answer to this question is a resounding '"Never." It has become noticeably evident that zoos are not a current resource for the protection of rare and endangered species. Animals should not be kept in zoos, because they fail at the conservation of animal species, provide little or no education about habitat and the behavior of animals, and harm the animals physically and mentally. Primarily, zoos fail at the conservation of animal species. Zoos claim that certain species would become extinct if places like zoos did not exist, but they ultimately fail at the conservation of animal species. Animals who are endangered will likely never be released back into natural habitats ("Zoos: Pitiful Prisons" par. 9). The Author of Captive Animal Protection Society states, "Many zoos have no contact of any kind with any reintroduction program," meaning that once the animals are introduced to zoos, they are likely to remain there. One U.S. study found no compelling evidence for zoos and aquariums to make the claim that they promote interest of conservation upon conversing with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Argumentative Essay On Seaworld "For man cannot give wild animals freedom, they can only take it away" (Jacques–Yves Cousteau). That is something that a SeaWorld hater would say, something PETA would say. But is there actually any truth to that? Since the opening of Seaworld, PETA and other organizations have been accusing them of mistreating their animals, yet, SeaWorld continually complies, meet and exceed the requirements needed to keep their animals. The very beginning of 'SeaWorld' is taken all the way back to 1959, when Busch Gardens started. Busch Gardens is a zoological park, "the country's first free–range habitat for herds of animals" (SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment). Like Busch Gardens, SeaWorld is a zoological park, just for marine life. SeaWorld was originally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... John Hargrove an ex seaworld employee is speaking badly about SeaWorld during the film, SeaWorld says, "Mr. Hargrove worked at SeaWorld San Diego from 1995 until 2001 and SeaWorld Texas from 2008 through August, 2012. Hargrove never worked at SeaWorld Florida, and never worked with Tilikum" (Awesome Ocean). If you don't know someone, then you can't talk about them like you know them, same thing with the profession Mr. Hargrove was in. He worked at SeaWorld, he might have worked with the orcas, but he never worked with Tilikum, the orca that the whole movie is about. That shows that Blackfish has uncredible witnesses and accusations. Again, Blackfish uses an uncredible witness, Dean Gomersall. According to SeaWorld, "Mr. Gomersall worked at SeaWorld Florida with sea lions, beluga whales and dolphins, and never worked with killer whales. He never worked with Tilikum" (Awesome Ocean). Now not only is Blackfish using an ex employee who has not worked with Tilikum, they are using an ex employee who has never even worked with killer whales before. That to me, throws out all the credibility of Blackfish, as it should to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Argumentative Essay on the Pros and Cons of Dolphins... Argumentative Essay on the Pros and Cons of Dolphins Living in Captivity versus the Pros and Cons of Dolphins Living in the Wild. The Common Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) are probably the most popular species of dolphins around. Coming under the order of Cetecea and the family of Delphinidae, the bottlenose dolphins are closely related to whales and are highly intelligent creatures (source 7). They are widely distributed around the world in the deep tropical and sub–tropical seas as well as other warm regions. For this reason, there is no recorded global estimate of the number of Bottlenose Dolphins in this world. According to source 9, it is regarded as a common cetacean, and too large and strong to be captured by accident. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Captured animal's natural hunting and survival instincts grow dull after living the lax life in a tank. Upon being released back into the wild, they are unable to fend for themselves and are quickly hunted by predators. Also, experience has proven that the spectators of educational animal shows come away with little thought for the welfare of the animals and more for other exciting things like fun rides, etc. Spectators mostly go to shows not for the education but for the entertainment of watching different and sometimes "weird" animals perform. Besides, many do not consider the mental distress that plagues the dolphins that are suddenly brought into captivity to be studied. Again referring to source 1 and 6, the animals may most likely not be able to adept well and this may increase their aggression towards their tank–mates as well as show other signs of obvious mental suffering. What's more, it is obviously not easy to care for these animals, not to mention costly. Safaris and parks fork out billions a year for the maintenance and care of their animals. Looking at SeaWorld's impressive facilities as an example, imagine the cost for designing, building and then maintaining the aquariums, plumbing, dietary needs, etc of the animals. And even then, it is no match for Mother Nature. Also, the ethical side of dealing with all living things dictates that it is immoral to interfere with the lives of the dolphins. We violate ... You could on either side of the debate and still be confused on what side is right and which is wrong. Well I am tell you one side of the debate and that side is that exotic animals should be in captivity. Let's move on and see this side of the debate. You may be asking yourself why should exotic animals be in captivity and does this benefit them in any way? The short answer yes let me explain for example the Panamanian golden frog have been extinct in the wild since 2007 because of a fungal disease thats been in Panama also with destruction of its natural habitat. This frog would not of lived if it wasn't for captivity and the Panamanian people would of been devastated they have frog on every from t–shirt to cups this ... Every animal no matter how you have trained it will still have primal instincts to attack and the people who want to get rid of exotic animals as pets don't want get rid of them because they attack people no they want get rid of them because they are exotic, and if they truly want to stop animal attacks they would get rid of all animals. You may ask what about the people releasing exotic animals from they homes the animals are not at fault here it is the person because only a insane would release they animals out into the wild. A man named Terry Thompson released his exotic animals and then killed himself does that sound like a sane person to you. You can't control the actions of a insane person because they are ... • 71. Why Are Zoos Inhumane Animals in the zoo are inhumane and being held captive? Well, what do you think? Animals in the zoo aren't inhumane or held captive. They are in there for a good reason like that they are sick or injured. The animals might not be able to live on their own so they might get placed in a zoo to help them out. They also are there to help out other animals that need help. They might just be there to be held to captivity. In the zoo, there are animals who are sick or injured. They live in the zoo to get medical help. The animals might have an injury like a broken leg and in the wild it's harder to survive. Some animals might be just be there to be a friend. One animal might be lonely so they bring in another animal to help out the lonely, sick, injured animal. Zoos feel that some animals are lonely and need a buddy so the zoos bring in a buddy to help the other one out. The third reason is if they are just there to be there, captivity. Many feel that the animals are just there to be there or for some harsh reason. They aren't held captive but many people still feel that they are. Truly the animals are usually there to help another animal or because they are sick/injured. Though many feel they are held captive, they are really there for a good reason. There aren't any problems but many seem to still feel there are. As humans, the thought is that they are here for us and here for our convenience. In the end, there is a good reason that there are animals in the zoo. If anyone feels the animals are inhumane or held captive, well there really aren't because they are really sick or injured. They also could be there to help and take care of the other animals. Zoos are taking care of the animals and they are in there for a good reason. • 73. Seaworld's Abuse Of Animals In The Entertainment Industry Throughout the years, we have been made to believe that wildlife in the entertainment industry is captivating. Even though these animals may seem to be happy and healthy, the truth is the majority of these animals suffer a great amount of abuse. SeaWorld and the Circus have made a name for themselves, by claiming that he/she provides a safe a friendly environment. However, what is not shown during these performance acts is the abuse these animals suffer, or the amount of stress and anxiety the animals are under. Wildlife in captivity for exotic animals can cause a serious amount of stress along with abuse, anxiety which can lead to a fatal result for the animals and the people who take care of them. Since the 1960s, SeaWorld has captured wild orcas' for their main events. However, what SeaWorld does not disclose in the events, is how they come into possession of these beautiful animals. In 1964 a fella by the name of George Millay decided that he wanted to open up a theme park the featured marine animals. Therefore, in 1965, SeaWorld came into possession of a ... • 75. Importance Of Keeping Animals In Zoos And Aquariums Given that over five million animals are kept in zoos and aquariums around the world, ethical questions about keeping animals in such environments should be given serious consideration (Garner 2005: 140). In this essay, I shall evaluate the practice of keeping animals in zoos and aquariums from a utilitarian perspective, an approach which I will offer reasons for adopting. In doing so, I will reflect upon what it means to be held captive in such institutions, before critically analysing two principal justifications that are used in support of zoos and aquariums. Namely, that they provide worthwhile benefits in terms of education, and wildlife conservation. But first, I will consider the moral status of animals, and make a case that animals are indeed deserving of moral status, which should prompt us to carefully consider whether we can justify keeping them in zoos and aquariums. To ascribe an entity with moral status is to declare that its treatment by moral agents is morally important (DeGrazia 2008: 183). Moral status depends upon an entity being, at a basic level, sentient. This means that it must have the ability to experience sensation or feeling, which will see it having interests in avoiding sensations like pain, and desiring others, such as pleasure. Without this basic capacity, and therefore the ability to be harmed, moral status is meaningless and cannot be awarded to an entity (Jaworska & Tannenbaum 2013). We may think an object, such as a rock, has value ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There is a great debate going around on whether or not SeaWorld should be forced to close its doors. Lawsuits, death, and lies don't sound like things a normal parent would want their child to take part in. However all of those things have begun to surround SeaWorld's name and its legacy. The debate surrounding SeaWorld begins at whether the orcas should be freed or remain in captivity through the viewpoints of three different opinions: against SeaWorld, for SeaWorld, and a neutral standing. A long–standing argument for SeaWorld to remain open is the fact that the whales have been held in captivity for so long and are no longer viable to live back in the wild. SeaWorld filed a lawsuit against the California Coastal Commission to fight the conditions of the Blue World project which included forcing SeaWorld to stop captive breeding and the transfer of whales in and out of the park (Martin). According to Naomi Rose, a marine mammal scientist, "No enclosed sea pens exist to hold all 11 whales, either as a group or individually. And the cost of building such pens could reach $5 million each, with staffing costs of up to $500,000 a year for each pen," SeaWorld has retaliated against the attacks that have for the majority stemmed from BlackFish.
