The Upstream and Downstream of Seeing Annie Dillard's "Seeing" discusses the two possible ways
to properly see things and relates them to light versus darkness in nature, and upstream versus
downstream of a river. The essay explains that there are two ways to see things in the world; to look
for something specific, or to let go of that desire to see something. Both types of seeing are also
combined with either brightness or darkness and with either upstream or downstream. Dillard has

something almost mystical, divine. This impression quickly changes, as they are introduced to this
family, who's members are unhappy, some to the extreme of deciding on taking their life and others'.
Such is the example of Chris' mother who, after being raped by her own husband, and bearing two
more unwanted children, is driven by her own misery to take her life and the twins'. This seems to
present the reader with the harsh reality the characters face, even with the poetic narrative softening
things up.
Throughout the course of the novel, the narrative voice seems to be even more mystical when it is
focused on Scotland, especially Aberdeenshire, and the land itself, making the reader feel as though
they were there, contemplating something magical. Once again, the events that take place bring
them back into this cruel reality where they find the father trying to convince Chris to lay with him,
but eventually fails, since he is bedridden because of a stroke he had. Here and many other times it
is obvious the main character struggles with the idea of Kinraddie, and the farm, but this is usually
related to family issues.

seems to have a fairly uneventful life, now however, she seems to have plenty of stories to tell the
audience. By the end of the monologue she seems to have an eventful and fulfilling life. So in other
words she has "Found her feet" in life and chiropody.
Also in the title there is humour. The name "Miss Fozzard" suggests humour and a character whose

We learn about whoever is talking by the way they speak and we learn about the others from the
way they are spoken about. Darl speaks the most; he is the thinker. Jewel speaks the least; he is a
man of action. Cash is a systematic, logical man; he is a perfectionist and a craftsman. Addie did not
like her husband and Dewey Dell was pregnant and did not like Darl. Anse is lazy, Cora is a very

religion is modernistic. Modernists embraced the future and were beginning to leave the past behind.
They became skeptical about the traditions of their forefathers; they scrutinized traditions. Hulga
was very skeptical of the bible salesman, Manley; she felt that she was intellectually superior to him
and anyone else who had the old fashioned beliefs in religion. Hulga was a very educated
intellectual; being an educated woman with a Doctorate in Philosophy was also a very modern
concept for this time frame.
