Buddhism And The Concept Of Buddhism In Tibetan Buddhism
Chapter#1
Concept of Buddha in Tibetan Buddhism
Introduction
First we discuss what Buddhism is and then discuss how it is perform in Tibet.
Buddhism
Shakyamuni is the founder of Buddhism. He was born around 490 B.C.E. to a royal family who
lived in a palace in the foothills of the Himalayas and lived a luxurious life. From the moment he
was born, did not lead a typical life. Buddhism like other religions is a universal religion and it
covers a vast part of Asia and Far East: India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Mongolia, Tibet, China, Korea
and Japan. Buddhism gets its name from the title Buddha (Enlightened One) through which the first
and the mainly well–known Buddhist leader, Siddhartha Gautama was identified. The traditional

How Buddhism flourish in Tibet?
2. Relation between the Tibetan Buddhism and Buddhist of other areas.
3. What are the beliefs of Tibetan Buddhism?
Significance:
Is there any differerance of teachings, canon and theory between Tibetan Buddhism and the
Buddhism of other areas? How Buddhism revive in Tibet.
Methodology:
The method used in this study is textual. In addition to this, the researcher has followed historical
method in some historical issue related to the topic. I have tried to explain the topic in the light of
the tradition of the concerned religion. My project comprises the concept of Buddha in Tibetan
Buddhism and its emergence in that area.
Literature Review:
I choose topic for project is "concept of Buddha in Tibetan buddhism" although Buddhism had
spread into Tibet as early as 7th century; it was not until the 8th century that Buddhism over
shadowed Bon, the native shamanistic cult.
How Buddhism revive in the Tibet what happened with the Buddhist canon, practices and the
theories of Buddhism in this revival. Here in this project all this will be disscuss briefly.
In this research work we can find many books describing different aspects of the topic. I will discuss
some of these books briefly.

What Is The Similarities Between The Lhamo Theatre And The...
Lhamo, claimed by many to be the oldest living theatre in the world, for its origin dates back to at
least the 8th century AD; it is also one of the least extensively studied forms of theatre. Often a
similarity is made between the Athenian theatre festivals and the Tibetan theatre. The analogy
between the two is noticeable in the focus being on the poetic and sung parts, the chorus and the
structure and the use of space. There are no proven real historical links but the overwhelming
resemblance must be acknowledged which is reflected in the relationship between the theatrical
event and the spirit of the community. The entire community comes together ( with no distinction
made in class and creed) and gathers around the theatre to watch the ... Show more content on

He passed his own visions of the dance to his students. Mudras, or symbolic gestures, were used to
captivate spiritual energies which enhanced the inner spiritual values of wisdom and compassion,
each mudra is supposed to have special powers in itself. Masks made of clay and cotton were used
to portray mighty gods, and formidable spells were chanted while performing. These grandiose
performances were used to drive away local wicked heathen deities and evil spirits for the purpose
of creation of a purified realm for a monastery to be built upon – the foundations of a new religion.
Moreover, it symbolised the struggle between the protectors of the new religion and the guardians of
the local Bon–Po religion. Cham thus appeared in Tibet during the period of the triumphant
penetration of Buddhism and in a way, was the continuation of the Bon ritual dance but in a more
refined Tibetan Buddhist form, which follows the Vajrayana or the Mahayana school of teaching, a
form of transcendental esoteric Buddhism created as an amalgamation of Indian Buddhism and
indigenous Himalayan Spiritual and tantric practice. After the successful outcome of the initial
performance organised by the order of Padma Sambhava, Cham slowly spread to all the significant

Ethics Of Compassion Essay
Ethics of compassion To help explain the ethics of compassion I will be using reference from the
Dalia Lama's book Ethics for the New Millennium, more specifically chapter ten; The Need for
Discernment, and chapter 5 The Supreme Emotion. I will also refer to Touching Peace, and the five
mindfulness trainings. The Dalia Lama had so many strong points it was hard to find any criticisms
in his philosophies. One thing that concerned me was how he recognizes people who kill and torture
for pleasure. The other point he made that came across as weaker to me or somewhat questionable is
that we are to question whether our motive is genuinely compassionate when considered in relation
to the totality of all beings. As for the strong points keeping ... Show more content on

The Dalai Lama felt this to be entirely appropriate, and very necessary, In that it shows two sides of
human potential. I agree with him on this completely and I think the fact they made this memorial
like this makes it more than just a memorial, it is also art. The Dalia Lama wants us to understand
that the existence of negative potential does not give us grounds to suppose that human nature is
inherently violent. The next question to think about is, what about those who kill and torture for
pleasure? Here he is talking about people like Hilter, Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot. In these types of
people there is a lacking of the basic impulse toward care and affection for others. There is a
commonality between all of them, that their schemes were carried out in accordance to a perverted
vision. They all have goals towards which they were working. The Dalia Lama wants us to
understand that killers come from a particular society, time and place. Also we should recognize the
role of the imaginative faculty in their actions. Although I can understand these things, I think it
comes awful close to making excuses for the horrible actions that these people have been in charge
of. By the use to which this faculty is put determines whether actions it conceives are positive or
negative, ethical or unethical. The individuals' motivation in this is known as Kun

Buddhism
Being a Buddhist "The secret of Buddhism is to remove all ideas, all concepts, in order for the truth
to have a chance to penetrate, to reveal itself."
― Thích Nhất Hạnh (1926– )
Born and raised in China, it seems very common for me to become a Buddhist. Growing up seeing
all the majestic Buddhism temples, august figure of Buddha and merciful Bodhisattvas, it seems that
Buddhism is an integral part of me. In my mind, Buddhism is like a pure lotus growing out of the
feculent muddy water; without being contaminated at all, it keeps delivering its pleasant, inspiring,
compassionate fragrance to the whole world, making the world better and clearer, just like a
Bodhisattva. Although people may not become the monks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

However, some people argue over the idea of "having no passion left in life", believing that in this
way, we are treating our lives negatively. But they are misunderstanding it. "Having no passion"
does not mean giving up the life; in fact, it means that we are not eager to get the good results, and
we are not result–oriented anymore. But still, we keep a decent attitude towards life. In this way, we
no longer feel sorry or angry when we do not succeed, because we never long for it and we are
ready to embrace any consequent; we neither feel happy or the unhappy sense of loss when we
achieve something, because we never think of gaining. This is the most important lesson I learned
from Buddhism, which has been bringing me power and tranquility that I have never felt before.
Third, "everything is emptiness" (Khyentse 55). When we analyze ourselves and the world, we may
find out that everything is interdependent thus totally impermanent, and we do not have any control
of anything, even ourselves; the "form", "time", and "space" can easily be dismantled, thus they
equal to emptiness (Khyentse 57). Looking around, everything we see now will be different in the
next instant; even though the appearance does not change, the inside nature changes, which no one
has any control of. Of course we can see and touch things that physically exist, but they do not exist
inherently, and that is what we call "emptiness".

A Cultural And Community Experience
INTRODUCTION In an effort to experience a cultural and community experience that is outside my
"normal" culture and encourages interaction among people with whom I might not normally
interact, I attended The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment: The Lamrim
Chenmo teachings at the Chenrezig Tibetan Buddhist Center located in Middletown, Connecticut on
July 8, 2014.
PRIOR TO VISITING THE CENTER Before I visited the Chenrezig Tibetan Buddhist Center, I
wasn't sure what to expect. I tried not to do too much research about the Center and Tibetan
Buddhism on purpose before attending because I wanted the experience to be fairly raw. I thought
the better prepared that I might have been, the less chance that I might feel the ... Show more

However, I arrived at the Center nearly 20 minutes early, which also gave me a level of anxiety
because I did not want to interrupt if other activities were going on, nor did I want to be sitting
awkwardly within the Center itself alone for arriving too early.
DURING THE VISIT TO THE CENTER As I approached the Center, I could feel myself growing
nervous. However, this is not an uncommon feeling for me, as I often feel nervous when there is
timing involved. I never want to arrive too early nor too late – I want to be exactly on time. As I
came up to the Center I began to realize what some of my expectations had been (I had attempted to
think about these before I went to the event, but I realized that I wasn't sure what I was expecting
until I got there and felt that my expectations were either confirmed or denied). The Center is a
house with a porch and a small sign reading "The Chenrezig Tibetan Buddhist Center). I was not
expecting a converted house, but rather some sort of stand–alone building, perhaps like a temple,
synagogue, or church. As I went inside, I saw rows of shoes from students before me, and
remembered to take off my shoes prior to going into the shrine room as I had read on the Center's

The CEO Paying Everyone $70,000 Salaries Has Something to Hide – Bloomberg Businessweek
This article interested me because I remember reading a lot in the news about the CEO who was
paying his employees $70,000, and I thought that was an extremely noble and kindhearted thing to
do. But I also remember seeing something or another about him being sued, which might have
caused the salary increases. So, to me, this article was interesting as a means to figure out what
really might have happened. However, if he raised salaries because of a lawsuit, I have to give him
and his PR team credit because they spun it expertly. He came out looking like a progressive hero,
fighting for the little guy.

The Pros And Reputations Of The Dalai Lama
Someone's reputation often depends on his work, behavior, and achievements. Reputation is the
opinion or beliefs that people generally have about a person based on his past. Some people see the
Dalai Lama as an evil person and the others see him as a kind and peaceful person. He has a good
reputation in the West. However, Chinese people hate him and accuse him of hypocrisy. So the Dalai
Lama has two different reputations.
The Dalai Lama is the Tibetans' political and spiritual leader. He is the most important leader in
Tibet. The Dalai Lama is a monk of the Tibetan Buddhism. The 14th and current Dalai Lama is

as an effective speaker and he has a significant charismatic status. Westerns, who don't know a lot of
the Dalai Lama's tradition, see the personal aspect of his charisma inspiring. Unlike Tibetans who
see his personal aspect is less important than his position as the Dalai Lama. There are two

The Vajra Of Vajrayana Buddhism
The Vajra in Vajrayana Buddhism
As Buddhism developed different schools or sects began to branch out taking the main component
of Buddhist belief, called Dharma, but coming up with different ways to practice their own distinct
view of Buddhism. Vajrayana Buddhism is of Indian tantric origin but it developed in the
"Himalayan nations of Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan" because of this many Vajrayana's tantras, rituals,
have woven into Tibetan Buddhism making it difficult to differentiate between the two ("The
Vajrayana ..."). In this paper I will analyze the nineteenth century Tibetan artwork called Vajra
Ritual Scepter donated to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and discuss the symbolism behind the
vajra as well as the importance of the vajra in Vajrayana Buddhist practices.
The artwork I chose to analysis was a Vajra Ritual Scepter that is currently being held by the
Philadelphia Museum of Art ("Vajra Ritual Scepter" & See Appendix 1). The Wheeler's donated this
piece to the museum in 1933. The actual artwork has been dated to the nineteenth century from
somewhere in Tibet. The artist is unknown but the vajra was constructed of copper alloy with
mercury gilding. As a result it is a shiny cool gold color, not quite true gold but not quite a true
silver or metallic color. The center is made of a bead of metal where a person can hold the vajra
between the tips of their thumb and a finger. From the center the decorative elements are identical

Ethics And Moral Subjectivism
Moral Subjectivism:
Moral Subjectivism: ethical philosophical theory comes In several shapes, its most individualistic
expression is ethical subjectivism, ethical subjectivism says that the standards for what is thought –
concerning virtuously right or wrong is the people perceptions, opinions, experiences, inclinations,
and their needs.
Ethical subjectivism denies the existence of absolute, unchanging, universal moral standards.
Instead, it views ethical values as being private, individual, and subjective in nature. Statements
typical to the ethical intellect position embody these ,morality, is like the among of the eye of
beholder and its most descriptive statement is that, no matter somebody thinks is correct is correct.
Moral subjectivism assumes that no one can be wrong regarding his or her moral views. If the
individual is that the basis of moral truth, then none folks would possibly ever be mistaken in our
moral opinions, for no matter we have a tendency to tend to believe ought to be true. Clearly, ethical
subjectivism might be a shallow and incoherent approach to moral values. Given the importance of
morality, no one can afford to settle for deficient ideas regarding it. ... Show more content on

Gendun Drup: The First Dalai Lama
Gendun Drup (1391–1474) was the ordination name of the monk who came to be known as the
'First Dalai Lama', but only from 104 years after he died.[36] There had been resistance, since first
he was ordained a monk in the Kadampa tradition[27] and for various reasons, for hundreds of years
the Kadampa school had eschewed the adoption of the tulku system to which the older schools
adhered.[37] Tsongkhapa largely modelled his new, reformed Gelugpa school on the Kadampa
tradition and he also refrained from starting a tulku system.[38] Therefore, although Gendun Drup
grew to be a very important Gelugpa lama, after he died in 1474 there was no question of any search
being made to identify his incarnation.[37] Despite this, when the Tashilhunpo monks

The Dalai Lama, a Leader in Exile Essay
Whilst examining the world's leaders, there is no one who compares to the Dalai Lama, who is the
religious and political leader of Tibet. The Dalai Lama, (Tenzin Gyatso) had a customary childhood
until the age of three, when Regent, one of the senior Lama's, had a vision that was conclusive to
having Tenzin Gyatso as the 14th reincarnation of the Dalai Lama. After years of schooling in
religion and worldly affairs, he became Head of the State of Tibet at the age of 16, but was later
forced into exile by the Chinese government in when Tibet was invaded. Despite all the hardship he

He held his ground and defended his people against China, a country that is much tougher than his
own. Many feared for his life but the Dalai Lama said that he would stand by his people, regardless
of the consequences. In 1959, The Dalai Lama was forced into exile by the Chinese, but that did not
end his fight for the liberation of his people. About 100,000 individuals followed him into exile as
he established a democratically based alternative government at Dharamsala in Punjab, India, aptly
known as 'Little Lhasa'. It has cultural and educational establishments and serves as a "capital–in–
exile" for 140,000 Tibetan refugees. In the past decade, the Dalai Lama has tried repeatedly to
negotiate with the Chinese. Currently his pleas for help have been ignored by the United Nations
and other world organizations. Nations of the world seem to have forgotten the plight of the Tibetan
people. Despite the fact that other nation's actions have forsaken the Tibetan people; the quest for
Tibetan independence has been overshadowed by the resilient magnet of Chinese commercialism.
The Dalai Lama, at age 75 is still the most important freedom fighter for the people of Tibet. The

Summary Of Seven Years In Tibet
Ann Braun RS 390 Movie Review ( Seven Years in Tibet) November 20, 2017 For this student of
Buddhism, the movie Seven Years in Tibet was a historically correct, religiously sound, and moving
depiction of the beauty and power of this eastern non–monotheistic faith. Furthermore, the grand
biography of the Austrian climber Heinrich Harrier, not only illustrated the supernatural aspects of
the faith, but also its folkloric magic. Additionally, it tackled the political struggles, both externally
and parochially, that embroiled the country in the aftermath of World War II. Moreover, so poignant
were these struggles that the Chinese government banned both the lead actor and the producer from
ever visiting China. Lastly, the main theme of the movie, was one of purification and redemption in
the tale of how an egotistical mountain climber evolved when exposed to this compassionate and
generous culture. Jean Jacque Annaud sets most of this epic film in the pilgrimage city of Lhasa,
were the young Dalai Lama resides( Strong 264). Here the story illustrates the many oddities of
Tibetan Buddhism such as the magic rituals that are both part of both Buddhism and earlier folk
beliefs. For instance, the Tibetans are most afraid of foreigners, and the movie shows the people
using Tantras ( magic), and making hand gestures or mudras to drive away evil (Robinson 123–124).
For example, travelers sticking their tongues out when meeting strangers, a ritual for which neither
the text nor the film offered any explanation. Just as interesting is the sounds that transport the
viewer into the setting, with hand clapping and bells, both rituals for keeping evil away( Robinson
124). Moreover, the most powerful use of tantra magic is a scene where the monks have created a
large mandala or power circle, in hopes of affecting a peaceful solution to the conflict with the
communist Chinese government. When the Chinese generals stride through the meticulously created
chalk masterpiece, destroying the work as they go, the audience understands that both Tibet and
Buddhism are doomed. Another example of the supernatural is the Dalai Lamas' prophetic powers,
as the thirteenth predicts that foreigners will overrun Tibet, and the

Reputation In Dalai Lama
Introduction:
Reputation basically means the different opinions and views that people and society have about
someone. Reputation usually shaped of more than one factor, the person usually start to be known
for what he achieved, was he won a price? Wrote books or had discoveries? , whether if he had an
impact in people or did he affected their lives ?, this is how usually reputation been formed.
However, reputation varies according to how people perceive you and your behavior, it depends
whether they are lovers or haters and because of that, same person could have different reputations.
In saying that, Dalai Lama is a great example of how is that one person could have different
reputation one is extremely positive and the other one is negative. So, in this essay I'm going to ...

Also, he is seen as a political leader, this role came from the fact that in traditional Tibetan society
the religion and politics related to each other so the one who has the higher religious status usually
acts as the head of the Tibetan state and this been the case for the previous dalai lamas as well.
These two rules have been changed after 1950 in order of the Chinese invasion. Also, Dalai Lama
had seen as a living Buddha for the Tibetan people. Living Buddha is a special one, someone with
enlightens and has an Inner peace, someone has a special look towards life and things, someone
different from any other human beings. Living Buddha is a reincarnation of His previous
predecessors. Dalai Lama had given this special and higher status in Tibet.

him in a negative way. In their opinions, Dalai Lama doesn't deserve this high status in Tibet, he is

Pros And Cons Of Dalai Lama
While these two viewpoints are incredibly different, points can be taken from both in order to
achieve a compromise that promotes humanitarian values and morals without risking the sacrifice of
security and culture. I think that the most important thing that the Dalai Lama's argument proposes
is not condemning our fellow man. This is not to say that everyone you meet in life deserves the
compassion he suggests to show, but not passing judgment on someone without due cause is a staple
of western society. He is right to say that we should not abandon this just because those being
judged come from other parts of the world. In turn, the self fulfilment and happiness that come from

The easiest way to achieve this is to actively support and encourage a more inclusive integration
process. While refugees are a special scenario, if someone immigrates to a country they will, for the
most part, want to become part of that country. If we as a whole are able to encourage this smooth
integration without asking someone to denounce or cut back on as big of a part of their life as
religion can be, Islamification will be a thing of the past. By promoting a unity of religions, not
separate sects of them, none will feel oppressed or unheard in their country and feel the need to take
matters into their own hands. Clearly, the solution here is simply creating a balance between the two
opposing viewpoints. This compromise will take the strengths of each argument and remove the
totality and radicality from them, making it by far the most logical course of action to be taken. We,
as a human race, need to promote a society which accepts all religions, but does not allow them to
be involved in policy making or other government proceedings in order to create a sense of security
and structure while allowing for compassion and happiness for all

The Pros And Cons Of Gelukpa Law
It is absolutely true that Doegyal practitioners are not allowed to receive Nyingma teaching. It is
clearly written in the infamous Yellow Book, how the spirit Doegyal spoke to Zigyab Rinpoche,
"that on many occasions like this gyaltsen dorjee shugden spoke during trance that you can not

obstacles to your life as well as your accomplishment, which would not be good. He warned many
times but did not listen. One day, Dorjee Shugden was greatly annoyed and told him "I may not

the Rinpoche to uphold a pure Gelug tradition."

The Tibetans and the Navajo Native Americans are from different cultures. The Tibetan's have lived

The 14th Dalai Lama fled China and found exile in India. China to this day has total control over

When Religious Beliefs Overpower Human Rights
Free societies benefit from a separation of church and state, while others are greatly governed by a
combination of the two. The problem arises when religious beliefs overpower human rights, and
oppression takes over. At the center of its core, Buddhism emphasizes on meditation as the path
towards liberation of the wheel of samsara. To further my understanding, I chose to focus on a
Tibetan meditation practice known as Vajrayana, which is the most important practice from the
Theravada schools as a means to the liberation of all sentient beings, hence, eliminating oppression
and suffering (Lewis, 69). To gain a greater understanding and appreciation for this practice, I

According to Lopon Wandgu's lecture, visualization of self as an enlightened being is the reason
why one meditates. Empowerment, which comes from the embodiment of the five wisdoms of the
Buddha, allows for praise and offering through recitation (mantra), which "rotates around the seed
syllable at the heart" (Wandgu). Dissolution during meditation allows for the environment to be
melted into the "seed syllable", finally melting into emptiness. During the final stages of meditation,
one must arise again "as deity." The last part referred to as the dedication, requires the "practitioner
to dedicate the merit [from the merit bank] of meditation to the benefit of all sentient beings"
(Wandgu). After the main meditation section, the practitioner is required to try and keep the feeling
of being an intrinsic deity. Lopon Wangdu, stated that meditation is not for ourselves, but for the
liberation of all sentient beings and for the enlightenment of deities that are capable to help other
sentient beings. Lopon Wandgu explained that that are three types of practitioners, inferior, middle
person, and the superior. For the purposes of this paper, I will focus on the superior level, because at
this level one knows that we are all on the same "samsara boat" (Wandgu), and the only "way out" is
to help others reach a mind of enlightenment. In Vajarayana practice we also take refuge in the
Dharma protectors, who are highly advanced beings capable

Religions Around the World
Numerous people, all around the world, participate in at least one kind of religion which has a great
chance that monasticism is a possible piece that makes up the religion. These religions vary from
place to place and from person to person. Like religion itself, monasticism varies from religion to
religion and from place to place. The variation that often occurs in the monastic aspect of the
religion is in the small aspects of the monastic life instead of a large overall difference. Small
aspects include things such as the part that monasticism plays can range from small with very few
men to large with many men taking vows and becoming monks. This weighs more heavily than an
overall difference would in monasticism. An example of two religions' monastic piece being
different because of small aspects is Tibetan Buddhist and Roman Catholics. Although monasticism
is a part of both Tibetan Buddhism and Roman Catholicism, certain aspects are different between
the two religions. One of the ways that Tibetan monks and Roman Catholic monks vary is their
origins. Buddhism was introduced in the seventeenth century to Tibet from the places of China,
India, and Central Asia. Tibetan Buddhists see themselves as an inheritance from Indian Buddhists,
who were the main influence in the beginnings of the spread of Buddhism in Tibet. The school of
Buddhism popular in China, India, and Central Asia is the school of Mahayana, which deals heavily
with agricultural trade for their work. This

Political Beliefs Of Mahatma Gandhi And Dalai Mama
Political leaders have come to power in a variety of ways. Mahatma Gandhi and Dalai Lama are two
major leaders that had their own religious beliefs, had interesting life experiences, and had many
struggles throughout their lives. Mahatma Gandhi and Dalai Lama have their own similarities and
differences. Such as they both fought in a nonviolent way.
Gandhi was a political leader who had changed in many ways. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was
known as 'Mahatma' which means the great soul. Gandhi was born in a privileged caste, who
received an education. Gandhi was unhappy throughout his college years. He had found kindred
spirits and wanted to study different religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christianity. In
1893 he had accepted a year's contract work for an Indian firm in Natal, South Africa. Gandhi had
experienced racial segregation during his time in natal. Gandhi had then returned to India in 1916 to
practice a non–violent civil disobedience. According to
http://www.history.co.uk/biographies/mahatma–gandhi it says, "He also encouraged oppressed
villagers to improve their own circumstances, leading peaceful strikes and protests." This shows that
Gandhi wanted his people to learn and take action as well. By 1921 Gandhi was leading the Indian
national Congress. On March 12, 1930 the leader began to march to the sea in protest of the Britain
Salt Act, which prohibited Indians from collecting and selling salt. Gandhi found a simple non–

Meaning Of Happiness
There's no question that everyone wants to be happy within their lives. The only source of
disagreement lies within how one achieves happiness and what happiness really means. The authors
within the book Pursuing Happiness have their own meanings of happiness and what it takes to
achieve happiness. Topics such as: what happiness is, what brings happiness, what role does money
play in happiness, etc. In this first discussion, we see what the some of the authors have to say about
the meaning of happiness. Someone such as his Holiness the Dalai Lama would argue that happiness
is having peace and satisfaction within one's mind. As a tibetan monk, he believe that happiness
occurs within the self (Dalai Lama and Cutler 23). In contrast, Thomas Jefferson would explain that
happiness is actually the opportunity to freely choose one's path within life. Freedom, in eyes, would
be the embodiment of freedom (Declaration of Independence). In would also argue that happiness
stems from the feeling of self–worth, that you have a place within this world. As we see here, the
"true" meaning of happiness all depends on the person. There is no right or wrong answer because
we each perceive happiness in a different manner. This is important because it also means that there
are different opinions in which someone can achieve happiness. When it comes to achieving
happiness, there are two things to consider; physical and spiritual. Some people believe that
happiness can come from material

The first truth is that life involves suffering such as having pain, getting old, and death. It can also
describe painful emotions such as loneliness, and anger (Basic Buddhism, 1993). The second truth is
that suffering is caused by craving and hatred (Basic Buddhism, 1993). Instead of being
disappointed when others don't meet our expectations, Buddhism teaches us to be content and happy
with what we do have (Basic Buddhism, 1993). The third truth describes giving up useless things in

Then Rinpoche asked who the leader was and the boy gave his name correctly; he also knew the

The Religion of Buddhism is Based on Edifications of...
Buddhism is a religion predicated on the edifications of Siddhartha Gautama, who lived about 25
centuries ago in what is now Nepal and northeastern India. He came to be called "the Buddha,"
which betokens "aroused one," after he experienced a profound realization of the nature of life,
death and subsistence. In English, the Buddha was verbalized to be enlightened, albeit in Sanskrit it
is bodhi, "aroused." The two main goals of Buddhism are getting acquainted with ourselves and
learning the Buddha's edifications. To ken who we are, we require to understand that we have two
natures. One is called our mundane nature, which is composed of unpleasant feelings such as fear,
vexation, and jealousy. The other is our true nature, the component of us that is pristine, sagacious,
and perfect. In Buddhism, it is called the Buddha nature. The only distinguishment between us and
the Buddha is that we have not aroused to our true nature. Buddhists do not believe in a single,
omniscient God. The Buddhist understanding of the universe includes the apperception that there are
an abundance of aspects of this universe; this authenticity, that we don't understand. Through
analytical rumination and other practices we can understand the deeper truths about this
authenticity; truths that is indecipherable with our everyday minds. When we reach enlightenment
we will understand it, and until then there is no reason to believe that there either is or isn't a Deity.

The Dalai Lama: An Influential Icon Essay
Since the late 1300's essentially the same reincarnated figure has been controlling, teaching, and
leading the Tibetan Buddhism religion and government (Gale). The Dalai Lama is thought to be the
reincarnated spiritual and political icon presiding over the land of Tibet for over 14 lifetimes. His
Holiness' obligation to the Buddhist people and birthright is described as, "a teacher whose wisdom
is as deep as the ocean" (Ganeri 28). For centuries the Dalai Lama has been one of the world's most
influential leaders and teachers, passing along his wisdoms to disciples all over the globe. The
origins of the Dalai Lama date back to the start of the Gelukpa School, a monastery opened near

This process is long and rigorous, until they find the boy they are looking for they keep searching.
The monks will go door–to–door looking for children born the day the Dalai Lama died; they then
use certain tests to determine if the child is indeed the Dalai Lama (Chiu). "Tibetans believe the
Dalai Lama is the bodhisattva; Avalokiteshvara, in human form". Once the monks finally find the
Dalai Lama as a young boy, they take him to Lhasa (Ganeri 28) to train him in his duties (Wangu
67). In Tibet, Lama means "superior one", the Panchen Lama is "the 2nd highest religious figure in
Tibetan Buddhism". While the search is still being commenced for the Dalai Lama, the Panchen
Lama takes the Dalai Lama's place temporarily. The Panchen Lama is a younger Lama who is
chosen by the Dalai Lama during his lifespan (Wangu 115). The structure of the Lamas in Lamaism
goes as follows: Dalai Lama, Panchen Lama, high monks, lower monks, and then Tibetan Buddhism
followers (Chiu). All of these Lamas lead and follow the group of the Gelupka or yellow hats
(Ganeri 30). Both the Dalai and Panchen Lamas are reincarnations of specific people. Every Dalai

Incorporating Tibetan Buddhism into Modern Psychotherapy
As the world moves into the twenty first century, Western civilizations are witnessing a surge of new
technology, ideas and economic success. Urbanization is spreading rapidly and Western society's
push for progression is becoming more apparent. However, this obsession with advancement has
begun to take its toll on the happiness of the citizens. Studies have shown that in 2002, up to 13
percent of U.S. citizens suffered from mental disorders and that this number has only increased since

To prove the benefits of incorporating Buddhist philosophies into Western psychotherapy, I will
examine three specific Buddhist ideas: the connection of experience and meaning, the idea of
emptiness and the loss of the ego, and the true nature of the mind.
In order to examine the benefits of incorporating Buddhist ideas for psychotherapy patients, we
must first move past the common Western idea that Buddhism is too culture–bound and religious–
oriented to be incorporated into Western societies. While many Eastern cultures do consider
Buddhism as their primary religion, the philosophies behind the religious practices are
psychologically based (Michalon 203). The Dalai Lama, one of the Buddhists primary religious
leaders, agreed to this when he sad, "It is possible for people to adopt various Buddhist meditative
techniques or mental training without being a Buddhist (Gay 172)." It is of no threat to the religion
of any psychotherapy patient to be able to understand and incorporate Buddhist ideas into his or her
way of life. In order to progress to a happier lifestyle, we must be able to open our minds to examine
other philosophies and how we may benefit from them. Tibetan Buddhism offers a very
philosophical approach to a happier and more compassionate way of thinking.

An Analysis Of Tibet's Governmental System and the Dalai Lama as Head of State
Throughout history, society has created many different governmental systems in order to organize
society in terms of law and authority. Many have failed in their purpose but others have remained
steadfast in their goals and have prospered. To fundamentally understand why this pattern occurs,
we must understand the true function and purpose of government. Government serves two functions.
Internally, government should serve the function as the ultimate enforcer of norms, the final
arbitration of conflicting interests, and control the overall planning and direction of society.
Externally, government should serve the function as the handler of ... Show more content on

An assumption is that the populace is unlawful and henceforth credulous to a high degree.[2] A
second assumption is that if there is no distinction and discrimination between priestly status and lay
people, the system is not credible and has no legs to stand on. Tibet is a perfect example of this
medieval type of society. Other examples that closely resemble the Tibetan political structure
occurred during the Catholicism of feudal Europe, the Inca regime of Peru, and Brahminism of
India. Therefore, the integration of Buddhism into Tibet's government and the formation of the
institution of the Dalai Lama as head of state have not only demonstrated to be one of the leading
models of political system in the world but negatively made the country vulnerable to military
attack.
To better understand why an autocratic theocracy was the right governmental system for Tibet, we
must look at how Buddhism came to Tibet. Buddhism entered Tibet in the fifth century but did not
become a force until the seventh century under King Song–tsem–Gampo. King Song–tsem–Gampo
had two wives who were Buddhist and they became a very influential force by inspiring him to
spread Buddhism throughout Tibet. His accomplishments include establishing Lhasa in 639 A.D.
and erecting hundreds of temples. From the period between King Song–tsem–Gampo's rule and the

Surrounding the image of Shantarakshita, who is the central image of what is essentially a mandala

Buddha to Tibet and helped to establish the Himalayan nation's first Buddhist monastery. The eye
remains drawn to Shantarakshita, as the artist intends to praise Shantarakshita as the one who firmly
established Buddhism in the hearts, minds, souls, and daily lives of Tibetans. Portrayed in a rich
color palette containing saturated blues, reds, greens, and oranges, there is no remaining white space

Through including the religion into the government it meant all state decisions were to be made
based on the Buddhist teachings. This encouraged the religion to remain relevant and also meant
more people were including their faith in their daily decisions. Through this system of government it
also meant that the three Jewels of Buddhism could be included in daily life and the decisions for
the state were made with the best intentions and followed the principles of Buddhism.
The Dalai Lama has also challenged adherents to accept the fate that is given to them and make the
greatest use of their reincarnated form. As a young child he was unable to reject the position of
'Dalai Lama' however he has managed to utilise this position to the best advantage and has bettered

People After Death In The Movie : Unmistaken Child
If we take a glance at the world we live in today, we can recognize that people are different from one
another in physical and psychological ways. Since this is the case, people possess the ability to
develop different ideas even if they deal with the same topic. This can be seen through the one thing
that everyone in this world holds in common, which is that we are all living beings that will eventual
experience death. Even though we all share the same characteristics of being alive and will
eventually face death, there are many different ideas of what will happen to someone after death.
The movie "Unmistaken Child", demonstrates one idea of what the Tibetan Buddhist Monks
believes happens to someone after death. After watching the movie "Unmistaken Child", we can see
the idea of people being reincarnated after they die. This process claims that after a person dies they
begin a new life through a different physical body but hold their same ideas from their previously
lives. It was believed to be an involuntary process that people would experience and only those who
reached enlightenment could choose their form in the next life. The movie is based around one of
the most revered Tibetan masters name Geshe Lama Konchog who passes away. Before he does his
disciple Tenzin Zopa request that he come back to him in this world and he told him that it would

announced the new Panchen Lama. The Chinese government refused to accept the Dalai Lama's
selection, the Dalai Lama was welcomed at the White House on 11–10–98 where he met the

Vegetarianism In Tibetan Buddhism
Tibetan Buddhism, a Mahayana sect, is a unique exception in strictly following the vegetarian diet,
as Tibetan Buddhism encourages vegetarianism despite most communities being located on the
Qing–hai Tibetan Plateau (Rinpoche) The Qing–hai plateau is most likely the largest and highest
area ever to exist on Earth, with an average elevation of 16,400 feet (Foggin). This has led to few
constructions of transportation services, virtually causing the region to be excluded from vegetation
trade. Furthermore, lack of oxygen due to high elevation and severe permafrost demolish the
prospect of any suitable condition coming about for growing numerous crops. To cope with these
circumstances, Tibetan Buddhists strive on a vegetable and grain diet, consuming a restricted
amount of meat if natural conditions limit their main food sources (Rinpoche). In this way, they
clearly demonstrate their compassion towards animal life by holding a strong resolve to consume
only non beings and to eat meat only if of utmost necessity, regardless of limited vegetation supply.
On the bases of ahimsa and compassion, Tibetan Buddhism perpetuates the moral responsibility and
spiritual respect humans should hold towards nonhumans.
Contrary to the disheartening truth that animal agriculture and animal slaughter are inescapably
intertwined, the vegetarian diet is not a required regimen in all Buddhist schools of thought. Buddha
Gautama characterized Buddhism as a free religion, aware that forbidding meat

Buddhism And The Concept Of Buddhism In Tibetan Buddhism

  • 1. Buddhism And The Concept Of Buddhism In Tibetan Buddhism Chapter#1 Concept of Buddha in Tibetan Buddhism Introduction First we discuss what Buddhism is and then discuss how it is perform in Tibet. Buddhism Shakyamuni is the founder of Buddhism. He was born around 490 B.C.E. to a royal family who lived in a palace in the foothills of the Himalayas and lived a luxurious life. From the moment he was born, did not lead a typical life. Buddhism like other religions is a universal religion and it covers a vast part of Asia and Far East: India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Mongolia, Tibet, China, Korea and Japan. Buddhism gets its name from the title Buddha (Enlightened One) through which the first and the mainly well–known Buddhist leader, Siddhartha Gautama was identified. Lhamo, claimed by many to be the oldest living theatre in the world, for its origin dates back to at least the 8th century AD; it is also one of the least extensively studied forms of theatre. Often a similarity is made between the Athenian theatre festivals and the Tibetan theatre. The analogy between the two is noticeable in the focus being on the poetic and sung parts, the chorus and the structure and the use of space. There are no proven real historical links but the overwhelming resemblance must be acknowledged which is reflected in the relationship between the theatrical event and the spirit of the community. The entire community comes together ( with no distinction made in class and creed) and gathers around the theatre to watch the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He passed his own visions of the dance to his students. Mudras, or symbolic gestures, were used to captivate spiritual energies which enhanced the inner spiritual values of wisdom and compassion, each mudra is supposed to have special powers in itself. Masks made of clay and cotton were used to portray mighty gods, and formidable spells were chanted while performing. These grandiose performances were used to drive away local wicked heathen deities and evil spirits for the purpose of creation of a purified realm for a monastery to be built upon – the foundations of a new religion. Moreover, it symbolised the struggle between the protectors of the new religion and the guardians of the local Bon–Po religion. Cham thus appeared in Tibet during the period of the triumphant penetration of Buddhism and in a way, was the continuation of the Bon ritual dance but in a more refined Tibetan Buddhist form, which follows the Vajrayana or the Mahayana school of teaching, a form of transcendental esoteric Buddhism created as an amalgamation of Indian Buddhism and indigenous Himalayan Spiritual and tantric practice. Ethics Of Compassion Essay Ethics of compassion To help explain the ethics of compassion I will be using reference from the Dalia Lama's book Ethics for the New Millennium, more specifically chapter ten; The Need for Discernment, and chapter 5 The Supreme Emotion. I will also refer to Touching Peace, and the five mindfulness trainings. The Dalia Lama had so many strong points it was hard to find any criticisms in his philosophies. One thing that concerned me was how he recognizes people who kill and torture for pleasure. The other point he made that came across as weaker to me or somewhat questionable is that we are to question whether our motive is genuinely compassionate when considered in relation to the totality of all beings. As for the strong points keeping ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Dalai Lama felt this to be entirely appropriate, and very necessary, In that it shows two sides of human potential. I agree with him on this completely and I think the fact they made this memorial like this makes it more than just a memorial, it is also art. The Dalia Lama wants us to understand that the existence of negative potential does not give us grounds to suppose that human nature is inherently violent. The next question to think about is, what about those who kill and torture for pleasure? Here he is talking about people like Hilter, Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot. In these types of people there is a lacking of the basic impulse toward care and affection for others. There is a commonality between all of them, that their schemes were carried out in accordance to a perverted vision. They all have goals towards which they were working. The Dalia Lama wants us to understand that killers come from a particular society, time and place. Also we should recognize the role of the imaginative faculty in their actions. Although I can understand these things, I think it comes awful close to making excuses for the horrible actions that these people have been in charge of. By the use to which this faculty is put determines whether actions it conceives are positive or negative, ethical or unethical. The individuals' motivation in this is known as Kun ... Being a Buddhist Rui Gong RELB 2100 Buddhism Being a Buddhist "The secret of Buddhism is to remove all ideas, all concepts, in order for the truth to have a chance to penetrate, to reveal itself." ― Thích Nhất Hạnh (1926– ) Born and raised in China, it seems very common for me to become a Buddhist. Growing up seeing all the majestic Buddhism temples, august figure of Buddha and merciful Bodhisattvas, it seems that Buddhism is an integral part of me. In my mind, Buddhism is like a pure lotus growing out of the feculent muddy water; without being contaminated at all, it keeps delivering its pleasant, inspiring, compassionate fragrance to the whole world, making the world better and clearer, just like a Bodhisattva. Although people may not become the monks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, some people argue over the idea of "having no passion left in life", believing that in this way, we are treating our lives negatively. But they are misunderstanding it. "Having no passion" does not mean giving up the life; in fact, it means that we are not eager to get the good results, and we are not result–oriented anymore. But still, we keep a decent attitude towards life. In this way, we no longer feel sorry or angry when we do not succeed, because we never long for it and we are ready to embrace any consequent; we neither feel happy or the unhappy sense of loss when we achieve something, because we never think of gaining. This is the most important lesson I learned from Buddhism, which has been bringing me power and tranquility that I have never felt before. Third, "everything is emptiness" (Khyentse 55). When we analyze ourselves and the world, we may find out that everything is interdependent thus totally impermanent, and we do not have any control of anything, even ourselves; the "form", "time", and "space" can easily be dismantled, thus they equal to emptiness (Khyentse 57). Looking around, everything we see now will be different in the next instant; even though the appearance does not change, the inside nature changes, which no one has any control of. Of course we can see and touch things that physically exist, but they do not exist inherently, and that is what we call "emptiness". ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A Cultural And Community Experience INTRODUCTION In an effort to experience a cultural and community experience that is outside my "normal" culture and encourages interaction among people with whom I might not normally interact, I attended The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment: The Lamrim Chenmo teachings at the Chenrezig Tibetan Buddhist Center located in Middletown, Connecticut on July 8, 2014. PRIOR TO VISITING THE CENTER Before I visited the Chenrezig Tibetan Buddhist Center, I wasn't sure what to expect. However, I arrived at the Center nearly 20 minutes early, which also gave me a level of anxiety because I did not want to interrupt if other activities were going on, nor did I want to be sitting awkwardly within the Center itself alone for arriving too early. DURING THE VISIT TO THE CENTER As I approached the Center, I could feel myself growing nervous. However, this is not an uncommon feeling for me, as I often feel nervous when there is timing involved. I never want to arrive too early nor too late – I want to be exactly on time. As I came up to the Center I began to realize what some of my expectations had been (I had attempted to think about these before I went to the event, but I realized that I wasn't sure what I was expecting until I got there and felt that my expectations were either confirmed or denied). The Center is a house with a porch and a small sign reading "The Chenrezig Tibetan Buddhist Center). I was not expecting a converted house, but rather some sort of stand–alone building, perhaps like a temple, synagogue, or church. As I went inside, I saw rows of shoes from students before me, and remembered to take off my shoes prior to going into the shrine room as I had read on the Center's ... Last Dalai Lama The CEO Paying Everyone $70,000 Salaries Has Something to Hide – Bloomberg Businessweek This article interested me because I remember reading a lot in the news about the CEO who was paying his employees $70,000, and I thought that was an extremely noble and kindhearted thing to do. But I also remember seeing something or another about him being sued, which might have caused the salary increases. So, to me, this article was interesting as a means to figure out what really might have happened. Reputation is the opinion or beliefs that people generally have about a person based on his past. Some people see the Dalai Lama as an evil person and the others see him as a kind and peaceful person. He has a good reputation in the West. However, Chinese people hate him and accuse him of hypocrisy. So the Dalai Lama has two different reputations. The Dalai Lama is the Tibetans' political and spiritual leader. He is the most important leader in Tibet. The Dalai Lama is a monk of the Tibetan Buddhism. The 14th and current Dalai Lama is Tenzin Gyatso. The Vajra Of Vajrayana Buddhism The Vajra in Vajrayana Buddhism As Buddhism developed different schools or sects began to branch out taking the main component of Buddhist belief, called Dharma, but coming up with different ways to practice their own distinct view of Buddhism. Vajrayana Buddhism is of Indian tantric origin but it developed in the "Himalayan nations of Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan" because of this many Vajrayana's tantras, rituals, have woven into Tibetan Buddhism making it difficult to differentiate between the two ("The Vajrayana ..."). In this paper I will analyze the nineteenth century Tibetan artwork called Vajra Ritual Scepter donated to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and discuss the symbolism behind the vajra as well as the importance of the vajra in Vajrayana Buddhist practices. The Wheeler's donated this piece to the museum in 1933. The actual artwork has been dated to the nineteenth century from somewhere in Tibet. The artist is unknown but the vajra was constructed of copper alloy with mercury gilding. As a result it is a shiny cool gold color, not quite true gold but not quite a true silver or metallic color. • 23. Summary Of Seven Years In Tibet Ann Braun RS 390 Movie Review ( Seven Years in Tibet) November 20, 2017 For this student of Buddhism, the movie Seven Years in Tibet was a historically correct, religiously sound, and moving depiction of the beauty and power of this eastern non–monotheistic faith. Furthermore, the grand biography of the Austrian climber Heinrich Harrier, not only illustrated the supernatural aspects of the faith, but also its folkloric magic. Additionally, it tackled the political struggles, both externally and parochially, that embroiled the country in the aftermath of World War II. Moreover, so poignant were these struggles that the Chinese government banned both the lead actor and the producer from ever visiting China. Lastly, the main theme of the movie, was one of purification and redemption in the tale of how an egotistical mountain climber evolved when exposed to this compassionate and generous culture. Jean Jacque Annaud sets most of this epic film in the pilgrimage city of Lhasa, were the young Dalai Lama resides( Strong 264). Here the story illustrates the many oddities of Tibetan Buddhism such as the magic rituals that are both part of both Buddhism and earlier folk beliefs. For instance, the Tibetans are most afraid of foreigners, and the movie shows the people using Tantras ( magic), and making hand gestures or mudras to drive away evil (Robinson 123–124). For example, travelers sticking their tongues out when meeting strangers, a ritual for which neither the text nor the film offered any explanation. Just as interesting is the sounds that transport the viewer into the setting, with hand clapping and bells, both rituals for keeping evil away( Robinson 124). Moreover, the most powerful use of tantra magic is a scene where the monks have created a large mandala or power circle, in hopes of affecting a peaceful solution to the conflict with the communist Chinese government. When the Chinese generals stride through the meticulously created chalk masterpiece, destroying the work as they go, the audience understands that both Tibet and Buddhism are doomed. Another example of the supernatural is the Dalai Lamas' prophetic powers, as the thirteenth predicts that foreigners will overrun Tibet, and the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Pros And Cons Of Dalai Lama While these two viewpoints are incredibly different, points can be taken from both in order to achieve a compromise that promotes humanitarian values and morals without risking the sacrifice of security and culture. I think that the most important thing that the Dalai Lama's argument proposes is not condemning our fellow man. This is not to say that everyone you meet in life deserves the compassion he suggests to show, but not passing judgment on someone without due cause is a staple of western society. He is right to say that we should not abandon this just because those being judged come from other parts of the world. The easiest way to achieve this is to actively support and encourage a more inclusive integration process. While refugees are a special scenario, if someone immigrates to a country they will, for the most part, want to become part of that country. If we as a whole are able to encourage this smooth integration without asking someone to denounce or cut back on as big of a part of their life as religion can be, Islamification will be a thing of the past. By promoting a unity of religions, not separate sects of them, none will feel oppressed or unheard in their country and feel the need to take matters into their own hands. Clearly, the solution here is simply creating a balance between the two opposing viewpoints. This compromise will take the strengths of each argument and remove the totality and radicality from them, making it by far the most logical course of action to be taken. We, as a human race, need to promote a society which accepts all religions, but does not allow them to be involved in policy making or other government proceedings in order to create a sense of security and structure while allowing for compassion and happiness for all ... The problem arises when religious beliefs overpower human rights, and oppression takes over. At the center of its core, Buddhism emphasizes on meditation as the path towards liberation of the wheel of samsara. To further my understanding, I chose to focus on a Tibetan meditation practice known as Vajrayana, which is the most important practice from the Theravada schools as a means to the liberation of all sentient beings, hence, eliminating oppression and suffering (Lewis, 69). To gain a greater understanding and appreciation for this practice, I participated in a meditation service and lecture given by Buddhist monk ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Lopon Wandgu's lecture, visualization of self as an enlightened being is the reason why one meditates. Empowerment, which comes from the embodiment of the five wisdoms of the Buddha, allows for praise and offering through recitation (mantra), which "rotates around the seed syllable at the heart" (Wandgu). Dissolution during meditation allows for the environment to be melted into the "seed syllable", finally melting into emptiness. During the final stages of meditation, one must arise again "as deity." The last part referred to as the dedication, requires the "practitioner to dedicate the merit [from the merit bank] of meditation to the benefit of all sentient beings" (Wandgu). After the main meditation section, the practitioner is required to try and keep the feeling of being an intrinsic deity. Lopon Wangdu, stated that meditation is not for ourselves, but for the liberation of all sentient beings and for the enlightenment of deities that are capable to help other sentient beings. Lopon Wandgu explained that that are three types of practitioners, inferior, middle person, and the superior. For the purposes of this paper, I will focus on the superior level, because at this level one knows that we are all on the same "samsara boat" (Wandgu), and the only "way out" is to help others reach a mind of enlightenment. The variation that often occurs in the monastic aspect of the religion is in the small aspects of the monastic life instead of a large overall difference. Small aspects include things such as the part that monasticism plays can range from small with very few men to large with many men taking vows and becoming monks. • 49. Meaning Of Happiness There's no question that everyone wants to be happy within their lives. The only source of disagreement lies within how one achieves happiness and what happiness really means. The authors within the book Pursuing Happiness have their own meanings of happiness and what it takes to achieve happiness. Topics such as: what happiness is, what brings happiness, what role does money play in happiness, etc. In this first discussion, we see what the some of the authors have to say about the meaning of happiness. Someone such as his Holiness the Dalai Lama would argue that happiness is having peace and satisfaction within one's mind. As a tibetan monk, he believe that happiness occurs within the self (Dalai Lama and Cutler 23). In contrast, Thomas Jefferson would explain that happiness is actually the opportunity to freely choose one's path within life. Freedom, in eyes, would be the embodiment of freedom (Declaration of Independence). In would also argue that happiness stems from the feeling of self–worth, that you have a place within this world. As we see here, the "true" meaning of happiness all depends on the person. There is no right or wrong answer because we each perceive happiness in a different manner. This is important because it also means that there are different opinions in which someone can achieve happiness. These tests convinced them further that the reincarnation had been found and in 1940 the 14th Dalai Lama was enthroned. At 6 years old most of us were just starting to grasp the concept of reading, for the Dalai Lama this, and many more responsibilities and events were to come. His education began at the age of six and was completed with the Geshe Lharampa Degree (Doctorate of Buddhist Philosophy) when he was 25 in 1959. However, On November 17, 1950, at the age of 15 he was called upon to assume full political power as the head of the State and Government, after some 80,000 Peoples Liberation Army soldiers invaded Tibet. • 57. The Religion of Buddhism is Based on Edifications of... Buddhism is a religion predicated on the edifications of Siddhartha Gautama, who lived about 25 centuries ago in what is now Nepal and northeastern India. He came to be called "the Buddha," which betokens "aroused one," after he experienced a profound realization of the nature of life, death and subsistence. In English, the Buddha was verbalized to be enlightened, albeit in Sanskrit it is bodhi, "aroused." The two main goals of Buddhism are getting acquainted with ourselves and learning the Buddha's edifications. To ken who we are, we require to understand that we have two natures. One is called our mundane nature, which is composed of unpleasant feelings such as fear, vexation, and jealousy. The other is our true nature, the component of us that is pristine, sagacious, and perfect. In Buddhism, it is called the Buddha nature. The only distinguishment between us and the Buddha is that we have not aroused to our true nature. Buddhists do not believe in a single, omniscient God. The Buddhist understanding of the universe includes the apperception that there are an abundance of aspects of this universe; this authenticity, that we don't understand. Through analytical rumination and other practices we can understand the deeper truths about this authenticity; truths that is indecipherable with our everyday minds. When we reach enlightenment we will understand it, and until then there is no reason to believe that there either is or isn't a Deity. Buddhists aren't ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. The Dalai Lama: An Influential Icon Essay Since the late 1300's essentially the same reincarnated figure has been controlling, teaching, and leading the Tibetan Buddhism religion and government (Gale). The Dalai Lama is thought to be the reincarnated spiritual and political icon presiding over the land of Tibet for over 14 lifetimes. His Holiness' obligation to the Buddhist people and birthright is described as, "a teacher whose wisdom is as deep as the ocean" (Ganeri 28). For centuries the Dalai Lama has been one of the world's most influential leaders and teachers, passing along his wisdoms to disciples all over the globe. The origins of the Dalai Lama date back to the start of the Gelukpa School, a monastery opened near Lhasa in Tibet by a man named Tsongkhapa in the 15th ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This process is long and rigorous, until they find the boy they are looking for they keep searching. The monks will go door–to–door looking for children born the day the Dalai Lama died; they then use certain tests to determine if the child is indeed the Dalai Lama (Chiu). "Tibetans believe the Dalai Lama is the bodhisattva; Avalokiteshvara, in human form". Once the monks finally find the Dalai Lama as a young boy, they take him to Lhasa (Ganeri 28) to train him in his duties (Wangu 67). In Tibet, Lama means "superior one", the Panchen Lama is "the 2nd highest religious figure in Tibetan Buddhism". While the search is still being commenced for the Dalai Lama, the Panchen Lama takes the Dalai Lama's place temporarily. The Panchen Lama is a younger Lama who is chosen by the Dalai Lama during his lifespan (Wangu 115). The structure of the Lamas in Lamaism goes as follows: Dalai Lama, Panchen Lama, high monks, lower monks, and then Tibetan Buddhism followers (Chiu). All of these Lamas lead and follow the group of the Gelupka or yellow hats (Ganeri 30). Both the Dalai and Panchen Lamas are reincarnations of specific people. Every Dalai Lama since Avalokitesvara has been a reincarnation of the Buddha of compassion and every Panchen Lama since Amitabha has been a reincarnation of the Buddha of light (Chiu). Incorporating Tibetan Buddhism into Modern Psychotherapy As the world moves into the twenty first century, Western civilizations are witnessing a surge of new technology, ideas and economic success. Urbanization is spreading rapidly and Western society's push for progression is becoming more apparent. However, this obsession with advancement has begun to take its toll on the happiness of the citizens. Studies have shown that in 2002, up to 13 percent of U.S. citizens suffered from mental disorders and that this number has only increased since then (Rinpche 60). As a result of our push for new technology, more techniques and medication are evolving and being used in psychotherapy. We must, however, wonder if it is time to try ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To prove the benefits of incorporating Buddhist philosophies into Western psychotherapy, I will examine three specific Buddhist ideas: the connection of experience and meaning, the idea of emptiness and the loss of the ego, and the true nature of the mind. In order to examine the benefits of incorporating Buddhist ideas for psychotherapy patients, we must first move past the common Western idea that Buddhism is too culture–bound and religious– oriented to be incorporated into Western societies. While many Eastern cultures do consider Buddhism as their primary religion, the philosophies behind the religious practices are psychologically based (Michalon 203). The Dalai Lama, one of the Buddhists primary religious leaders, agreed to this when he sad, "It is possible for people to adopt various Buddhist meditative techniques or mental training without being a Buddhist (Gay 172)." It is of no threat to the religion of any psychotherapy patient to be able to understand and incorporate Buddhist ideas into his or her way of life. In order to progress to a happier lifestyle, we must be able to open our minds to examine other philosophies and how we may benefit from them. Tibetan Buddhism offers a very philosophical approach to a happier and more compassionate way of thinking. An Analysis Of Tibet's Governmental System and the Dalai Lama as Head of State Throughout history, society has created many different governmental systems in order to organize society in terms of law and authority. Many have failed in their purpose but others have remained steadfast in their goals and have prospered. To fundamentally understand why this pattern occurs, we must understand the true function and purpose of government. Government serves two functions. Internally, government should serve the function as the ultimate enforcer of norms, the final arbitration of conflicting interests, and control the overall planning and direction of society. Externally, government should serve the function as the handler of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An assumption is that the populace is unlawful and henceforth credulous to a high degree.[2] A second assumption is that if there is no distinction and discrimination between priestly status and lay people, the system is not credible and has no legs to stand on. Tibet is a perfect example of this medieval type of society. Other examples that closely resemble the Tibetan political structure occurred during the Catholicism of feudal Europe, the Inca regime of Peru, and Brahminism of India. Therefore, the integration of Buddhism into Tibet's government and the formation of the institution of the Dalai Lama as head of state have not only demonstrated to be one of the leading models of political system in the world but negatively made the country vulnerable to military attack. To better understand why an autocratic theocracy was the right governmental system for Tibet, we must look at how Buddhism came to Tibet. Buddhism entered Tibet in the fifth century but did not become a force until the seventh century under King Song–tsem–Gampo. King Song–tsem–Gampo had two wives who were Buddhist and they became a very influential force by inspiring him to spread Buddhism throughout Tibet. His accomplishments include establishing Lhasa in 639 A.D. and erecting hundreds of temples. From the period between King Song–tsem–Gampo's rule and the thirteen century, there was no centralized ... The eye remains drawn to Shantarakshita, as the artist intends to praise Shantarakshita as the one who firmly established Buddhism in the hearts, minds, souls, and daily lives of Tibetans. Portrayed in a rich color palette containing saturated blues, reds, greens, and oranges, there is no remaining white space on the canvas. The lowest portion of the composition is more cluttered than the uppermost portion, serving a symbolic function. The artist contrasts the ordinary world of the human mind and society with the transcendent world of enlightenment. The blue halo surrounding Shantarakshita leads the eye up, through a lotus blossom, towards the two figures above him: Shakyamuni Buddha to the right and Shantarakshita's own teacher to the left ("Historical Narrative: Shantarakshita"). People After Death In The Movie : Unmistaken Child If we take a glance at the world we live in today, we can recognize that people are different from one another in physical and psychological ways. Since this is the case, people possess the ability to develop different ideas even if they deal with the same topic. This can be seen through the one thing that everyone in this world holds in common, which is that we are all living beings that will eventual experience death. Even though we all share the same characteristics of being alive and will eventually face death, there are many different ideas of what will happen to someone after death. The movie "Unmistaken Child", demonstrates one idea of what the Tibetan Buddhist Monks believes happens to someone after death. After watching the movie "Unmistaken Child", we can see the idea of people being reincarnated after they die. This process claims that after a person dies they begin a new life through a different physical body but hold their same ideas from their previously lives. • 77. Vegetarianism In Tibetan Buddhism Tibetan Buddhism, a Mahayana sect, is a unique exception in strictly following the vegetarian diet, as Tibetan Buddhism encourages vegetarianism despite most communities being located on the Qing–hai Tibetan Plateau (Rinpoche) The Qing–hai plateau is most likely the largest and highest area ever to exist on Earth, with an average elevation of 16,400 feet (Foggin). This has led to few constructions of transportation services, virtually causing the region to be excluded from vegetation trade. Furthermore, lack of oxygen due to high elevation and severe permafrost demolish the prospect of any suitable condition coming about for growing numerous crops. To cope with these circumstances, Tibetan Buddhists strive on a vegetable and grain diet, consuming a restricted amount of meat if natural conditions limit their main food sources (Rinpoche). In this way, they clearly demonstrate their compassion towards animal life by holding a strong resolve to consume only non beings and to eat meat only if of utmost necessity, regardless of limited vegetation supply. On the bases of ahimsa and compassion, Tibetan Buddhism perpetuates the moral responsibility and spiritual respect humans should hold towards nonhumans. Contrary to the disheartening truth that animal agriculture and animal slaughter are inescapably intertwined, the vegetarian diet is not a required regimen in all Buddhist schools of thought.
