What Is The Evolution Of Iguana
Evolution of the iguana.
First sentence:
This first sentence makes me want to explain how iguanas adapt to their environment thanks to their
ability to change color and hide from predators and keep a look out for how to avoid danger also
how it evolved over time to be so amazing. They actually are very fun to watch too but you know
they can get mad too. Basically i'm trying to say how impressive they are from giant lizard and
marine snakes to small iguanas. Well i'm just doing this on iguanas because i love how they change
colors. They can avoid being seen so good. They are pretty smart because of how they don't move
until they are ready to attack. They tongue is pretty long and can be pretty fast when using to catch
stuff like flies.

They have more abilities than ever and survive without much stuff. Their skills to hide, camuflash,
sprint, and just relax having so much confidence. Also they have better skin and can climb pretty
easy unlike their ancestors. In my opinion i think they're much better since now they won't want to
eat us. Also they don't mind if this animal in next to them unless it's a predator. But if the animal is
pretty small the iguana will eat it. This is my last sentence and i just want to say thanks to evolution
for everything,

The Song Of The Yami Analysis
SONG OF THE ANCESTORS The Song is considered the absolute law of the Yami with no room
for gray areas or interpretation and their myths, unlike in western culture where the word myth is
understood as false, are considered as the only real truths and never to be questioned. It holds all the
taboos, rituals, and social reasoning of the Yami, and the history of the family reciting until present
time. This genealogy component of the song is why each family has their own version of creation in
the Song. However, the Yami are also aware of the different variations of the events in their stories,
and some narrators even acknowledge these differences within the telling of their own telling
(themes cp 4). "The main purpose of the narrative is to reinforce the listeners' knowledge of their
descent, which includes the territorial rights of their lineage and precise information on land, water,
and pasture ownership...The correct succession of personal names as related to the names of
settlements and fields is more important than what happened to the bearers of the names
themselves" (lim of nar sec cp6) Certain ancestral themes in the Song are heritage of the various
villages, but they can be shared by the Yami and storytellers may mix the themes freely.(thems, cp

The Role of the Narrator in Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Black Cat'
The narrator in "The Black Cat"
Edgar Allan Poe is well–known for his captivating tales of the macabre through eloquence and wit.
In many of his short stories, Poe was able to exploit his audience's fears through allegory and
descriptive details of murder and madness. One of Poe's captivating, yet mad, narrators helms "The
Black Cat," a tale of paranoia, alcoholism, and murder. There are several things that make the
narrator an intriguing character including his psychological state, the imp of the perverse, and the
effect that alcoholism has on him. Like in many of his tales, the narrator murders both his beloved
Pluto and his wife, on two separate occasions, yet denies that he has been stricken by madness and is
instead intent on setting the record straight. While the narrator blames his actions on his alcoholism,
it can be argued that his actions were not only influenced by alcohol, but also by his psyche. For
example, he believes that his beloved Pluto's doppelgänger is out to get him. Not only is the
doppelgänger a constant reminder of how badly the narrator treated his cat, but it also serves as a
constant reminder of how he killed it; the doppelgänger is missing an eye, just like Pluto, and also
has a mark that resembles a noose, which is how the narrator killed his cat. It is the doppelgänger's
physical appearance that drives the narrator to believe that it is his duty to destroy it before it
destroys him. While the narrator never intended on lashing out

Inherit The Wind, By Charles Darwin
Every living thing on this planet has evolved from the same original specie. Having this
information, could it not be concluded that all living things are, to some degree, related? Yes. To
further explain, evolution is a theory that states that organisms have diversified or in other words,
have changed into a more complex living thing. In the book Inherit The Wind, the townsfolk of the
play disagree heavily with the theory of evolution. Common ancestry is the theory that states that all
living things share a common ancestor or common descendent, which then ties into evolution.
Speciation, both allopatric and parapatric, show evidence for common ancestry. Speciation is when
new species arise due to an evolutionary process. There are multiple and observable accounts that
are used to support the theory of common ancestry. Charles Darwin's book, The Descent of Man
And Selection in Relation to Sex, goes into specifics with these accounts with placental mammals.
Placental mammals are mammals that nourish their embryos using the mother 's blood supply.
Common Ancestry in placental mammals provides sufficient scientific evidence, such as the
similarities in bone structures and genetic coding between animals, to support the theory of
evolution.
One of the biggest arguments against the theory of evolution and the theory of common ancestry is
that they are theories. A scientific theory is an explanation for something in the natural world
supported by facts and has successfully gone

Jello: A Narrative Fiction
I was woken up by Jello meowing and pawing at my head, causing me to throw my pillow over my
head.
"Shut your cat up, Mia," Dan groaned, throwing something at Jello.
I rolled my eyes, "Do you have a death wish?" I called, quickly getting up and picking up my cat
before he clawed Dan.
He frowned, "No but he obviously has anger issues..."
"Remind me not to wake you up early," I growled.
Dan make a face before sticking his tongue out and topping it off with a middle finger.
"I have a satanic cat and I'm not afraid to use him," I warned, holding Jello a couple inches in front
of me.
"Alright, alright, alright!"

I got up, answering my phone and stepping aside to talk to her, "What's up?" I began.

The Race Of Man By Charles Darwin
Charles Darwin's essay, "The Race of Man", is a scientific explanation for the similarities among
humans, which argues whether man is subdivided into species, or more closely resemble subspecies
or races. Darwin uses his theory of evolution to explain why there is a multitude of similarities in
the development and inventive minds of all races, yet any observed differences are negligible.
Furthermore, most differences that are visible in man today "cannot be of much importance" (217),
however, if such differences were important, natural selection would have either "fixed and
preserved or eliminated" (217) any distinction. Darwin begins by explaining the causation of most
resemblances throughout all race.
Charles Darwin describes the distinct descendants of man by comparing it to the descendants of
domesticated animals. Darwin questions, "whether the various races have arisen from one or more
species" (213), he continues, "the domesticated races of the dog, for instance, have acquired their
present amount of differences since some one species was first domesticated by man" (213) while
compared to man, "no such question ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Differences ranging from the "color, hair, shape of skull, proportions of the body, etc." (213), are too
small to even have affected the role of natural selection, however, if they were or were not
important, then over the years, these differences would have, "fixed and preserved or eliminated"
(217) due to natural selection. Nevertheless, there is no prominent variances, even among people
who live in different climates. Therefore, these differences are negligible compared to the
similarities. Moreover, Darwin believes, "none of the differences between the races of man are of
any direct or special service to him" (217). Taking this into consideration, man's differences are not

Materialism In Vietnam
I finally arrived at the mansion for the annual family reunion. Many of my relatives and I were
staying at my uncle's mansion in Happy Valley– Happy Valley is the Beverly Hills of Oregon. There
were over thirty five of my relatives in Oregon at the time and most of the relatives from California
were staying at the mansion. I never fully understood how materialistic my family was until I went
to this house for the hundredth time during freshman year.
"Why can't you cook like my sister?!" my uncle exclaimed at his wife as he was eating the soup that
my aunt cooked. I was a freshman in highschool when I heard my uncle say this. No one seemed to
be phased by what my uncle said, besides me. I was infuriated, bothered, and confused because no
one said anything to my disrespectful uncle. My vast family heard him, but it was as if this comment

It's different," and blabbed on for about three minutes.
I rudely spat back, "Why do you guys claim to be modern and hip when your logic is still in
Vietnam? Why do you all enforce gender roles? Why do you all care more about the material side of
each other and not the inside? You all try so hard to impress each other, but we are all family and
that's pathetic."
My family did not reply to this and stared at me with disbelief. A few of my younger aunts and
uncles looked proud of me. However, the older relatives looked disappointed in me. My dad told me
to go downstairs and think about what I have said.
As I headed downstairs I could hear "hon lao" being said, which means disrespectful. I knew that I
was being a brat. I talked back to the people feeding me. However, I was honestly quite satisfied
with what I said, even if it was petty and disrespectful. What I said was not the way how to deal with
how I was feeling, but I said what was on my mind, which is something that I never

The Descent into a Digital Culture
The Descent into a Digital Culture In this century our culture is changing rapidly. Just in the last 30
years alone our scientific understanding, technological achievements, and fragmentation of values
has transformed faster than in the previous 100 years alone. With our express style culture change,
one has to wonder what will be said about our culture another hundred years in the future. What is
the one thing that has defined us as who we are? A section on our slow ascent into socialism may be
in order, or maybe a chapter on our obsession with going green. However, I would suggest that the
first chapter in a humanities book of 2113 on our culture title "The Descent into a Digital Culture".
Our culture is most defined by the digital ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This has led to a culture in which one does not wait for something, but expects to receive whatever
they desire instantly. This did not just translate into knowledge or things we needed. The average
person in the U.S today no longer waits to save up the needed funds to buy a new flat screen or other
new widget. Instead they finance it or put it on credit. Like their digital life on the internet they
expect it instantly. Our Descent into a Digital Culture of instant gratification has become part of who
we are.
How can our digital culture be explained without our sudden need to cease communication with
others. That is unless it involves a smartphone or a twitter page. The previous generations of the
United States use to socialize at social events and would even go out and visit people that they
wanted to talk to. Sometimes they would actually put their thoughts down a piece of dried would
pulp and mail it. The digital culture that ours has become carries out these tasks in a rather different
fashion. In modern times social events can be defined as a group chat on Facebook. As far as
visiting other human beings, who needs to when there is twitter. Writing letters has become a very
archaic form of communication replaced by email. In our present culture most believe that the entire
social stimulus that one requires can be found on Facebook or Snap chat. This new found lack of
human contact, caused by the digital culture, has caused

She retraces the mountain of her ancestry every single day quietly. In the wind she can smell the
scent of her ancestors made from crushed pale blue leaves of the mountain. The smell is coming
from up the mountain side from which her ancestors descended from, where the mountain lion laid
down and ate their deer. It is better to be where she once came from, where her ancestors came from,
up on that mountain watching nature. The elderly that remember it once are all gone, the old songs
of ancestors are forgotten, and the story where it all began died with its memory. The memory of the
culture dances in the snow frost moonlight, swam in the freezing mountain water, went through the

The protagonist looks deep into her soul to grab her ancestry. This is what allows her to use her
senses and find it in her every day bearing. The spirits of the ancestors roam the earth and go back
up to that mountain where she originated from. It is because of them that she can still remember her
culture, it lives within her and her surroundings. She is connected with the spirits and is unable to
part with them, there is almost an interdependency with them.
Thomas from the movie Smoke Signals tries very hard to remain connected with his Native
American Ancestors. Thomas likes to think of himself as a story teller like those of his ancestor
tribes. He spends his time telling people stories that are based on reality and fiction in order to create
symbolism and meaning to life. Arnold uses nature and its elements to describe many of his stories.
An example of this is when he describes himself and Victor as children of fire and ash. Like Silko,
he uses elements to describe where he came from. At times it seems as though Thomas does not
really understand his ancestry but continues to try and use their ways in his story telling.
Victor struggles to identify himself as a Native American. We see him describe what an Indian is
supposed to be like and it is loosely connected with his ancestry. Unlike the protagonist of the poem
he is unable to connect with the land and his ancestors. The protagonist mentions that the memory of
her people has

As you can see replicators played a huge part in creating life. How did replicators lead to the first
cell though? If replicators are meant to replicate and reproduce how did they end up making a living
organism? The first cell is presumed to have arisen by the enclosure of self–replicating RNA in a
membrane composed of phospholipids which are the principal components of cell membranes. The
process of replication lead to the first cell which is called LUCA (Last Universal Common
Ancestor). Many scientist believe that all living things on earth originated from an ancient organism
called LUCA. The single celled being likely lived about 4 billion years ago and is thought to have
eventually spawned two distinct groups of unicell life, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A lot of the time when a virus come into contact with the host or as we may know it, the cell, it can
insert its genetic material into its host, literally taking over the host's functions. Some viruses may
remain dormant inside host cells for long periods, causing no obvious change in their host cells, but
once stimulated new viruses are formed, self–assemble, and burst out of the host cell, killing the cell
and going on to infect other cells. All this is just a constant battle between the host and cell. Without
a host cell, viruses cannot carry out their life–sustaining functions or reproduce. They cannot
synthesize proteins, because they lack ribosomes and must use the ribosomes of their host cells to
translate viral messenger RNA into viral proteins. Viruses cannot generate or store energy, but have
to derive their energy, and all other metabolic functions, from the host cell. Sometimes the virus will
not be in the cell but outside functioning as coat for the protein. Viruses cause a number of diseases

Autocracy is in. From "Kim Jong–Il Looking at Things," a popular blog featuring pictures of former
North Korean dictator Kim Jong–Il looking at things, to a recent cinematic adaptation of Idi Amin's
maniacal reign of terror, fortuitously titled The Last King of Scotland, there is something about
despotic regimes that fascinate the western world, albeit from the comforting privilege of our
overstuffed armchairs. Frequently, as in the film previously mentioned, western narratives
concerning autocracy feature a story arc that traces the rapid rise of a despotic leader who seizes
power, often in conjunction with an assassination or coup d'etat, which is followed by a gradually
crescendoing, paranoia–fueled homicide binge that ultimately culminates in the death or deposition
of the despotic protagonist, following a descending spiral into insanity.
Although more than 400 years have elapsed since the first stage production of Macbeth, little has
been done to disjoint the narrative frame it has established, and to the extent that modern
reworkings, such as The Last King of Scotland, have attempted to renovate its facade, they have
generally done little but dilute the complexity of the original, primarily on account of the fact that
they take as their focus a single murderous autocrat, by necessity restricting the focus of the
narrative to the descent into madness of a single individual. In Macbeth we are presented with not
one but two unique descents, namely those of Macbeth and

Vestigial Organs: Common Descent by Charles Darwing
"Vestigial Organ" is a term used to describe organs or functions that due to the course of evolution
no longer have a use. The idea of useless organs had been around long before Charles Darwin, but
his idea for why they were there was the one that stuck. In his book "The Descent of Man" Darwin
named a few organs that were considered absolutely useless or had very little service such as
wisdom teeth, the appendix, the spleen, and the hind leg bones in whales. While functions of some
of these parts such as the appendix and spleen have been discovered, Evolutionists still believe that
vestigial are great evidence for the evolution. In complete contrast, Creationists know that they are
evidence for a Creator. They believe that the organs are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So why then has it popped back up? Evolutionists are unsure, but they do know that the mid tarsal
break strongly points toward ancestry from apes. Creationists on the other hand who do not believe
that humans descended from apes, must come up with an explanation for these useless functions and
parts. Their simple explanation for useless organs and functions? They aren't useless. A random,
meaningless organ in the body does not point toward a divine Creator, why would God put useless
parts into his creation. He wouldn't. Genesis 1: 31 "God saw all that he had made, and it was very
good. And there was evening, and there was morning – the sixth day" If something is very good it
isn't made with nonfunctional parts. That would mean that all organs must have a function that is
noteworthy. If there isn't a function that would only mean that we haven't figured out what it is yet.
Interestingly, Creationists view wisdom teeth in a similar way Evolutionists do. In countries that
aren't as developed, technologically, people there do not eat as much processed food. As a result
their jaws are stronger from chewing harder food. Their stronger jaws are able to accamodate the
third molars. Also due to their tougher diet, their teeth wear down, so more teeth helps. God fully
equipped us for eating, with strong jaws and teeth. Our mouths can take the wisdom teeth, it would
seem we are taking care of our teeth too well. Also since the fall of Eden, disease has plagued life on

Analysis Of The Black Cat By Heidi Hanrahan
In Heidi Hanrahan's analysis of "The Black Cat," By Edgar Allen Poe, she starts off by claiming that
this story is "Poe's commentary on nineteenth–century American domesticity"(Hanrahan, 40).
Hanrahan then points out that Pluto should be viewed not as a symbol for something deeper, but as
what he is in reality; the narrators pet. She uses excerpts and quotes from texts such as Uncle Tom's
Cabin and The Lamplighter to support her claims that having and "Caring for animals, writers
argued, helped people become better children and adults" (Hanrahan, 47). In these excerpts and
quotes, parents and people who witnessed someone mistreating an animal either inflicted harm on
the abuser or expressed great sympathy for the defenseless animal. Hanrahan explains that, because
we must take care of these animals and treat them well, we can learn very important "moral lessons"
from them. Ideally, everyone who owned a pet in the nineteenth–century was a person of high
morals, therefore, according to Hanrahan, having a pet was "...a marker of domestic bliss and
success."(Hanrahan, 42). Concluding her analysis, Hanrahan explains that by writing The Black Cat,
Poe is responding "...to his fellow contemporaries' celebration of domesticity..." Poe does so by
dismissing "...the comforting reassurance of domesticity..." by "Rejecting the idea that a loving
home can ensure stability..." (Hanrahan, 53) instead he shows the side of domesticity that many
people do not want to see. Poe's story explains how an ordinary and normally functioning home can
quickly turn into a very calamitous situation.
I believe that during Hanrahan's analysis of The Black Cat, she only scratched the surface of the
story without giving it deeper thought. She states, "...the story resists full explanation or
understanding, and that is precisely what is so disturbing about it..." (Hanrahan, 41). Although
Hanrahan's analysis covers the many different angles of domesticity and explains that there is no
reason behind the narrator's actions, she fails to examine the narrators shift in mental state
throughout the story. Poe explains the shift in the narrators mental state as a message to his fellow
contemporaries showing the devolution from domestic sanity to insanity. For

I wasn't able to look at the positive aspects of a relationship with someone who passed until I was
able to start to really grieve their death and the loss of the future with them before I was able to truly
look at the positive aspects of our relationship and the memories of. It was too painful to look at
until I started to grieve. The book also mentioned that some children may want to make something
in memory of the loss of the individual. It could be in the form of a collage, memory box, a memory

making is good. Some children may even ask others to get involved in the project. Something that

Academic Integrity Practice Assignment

Part I Researchers at Heinrich Heine University sought out characteristics of LUCA, which stands
for the last universal common ancestor. They found, through gene family analysis, that LUCA was a
microbe that lived when the Earth had little to no oxygen. In fact, its metabolism implies that it was
an organism that thrived in higher than normal temperatures and consumed hydrogen gas. From this

Race Is A Group Of Persons Related By Common Descent Or...
The definition of race is a group of persons related by common descent or heredity. A random
classification of modern humans, sometimes based on any or a combination of various physical
characteristics; such as skin color, facial form, or eye shape. In social work, we are often taught
about individuals cultures and ethnicities in order to improve our practice and competence. Race on
the other hand was created based on how people look, rather than their cultural decent, what religion
they practice, or where they currently live. Many individuals are discriminated against based on
looks which affects their daily living. As social workers we must be aware of different races and
how they are discriminated against, in order to better serve each individual. It is also important for
social workers to understand their own race and how if affects other races.
The White Race and My Understanding Understanding ones own race is important in social work
practice and assists in learning other's races. My race is white, but some people identify white
people as Caucasian. After researching, I found that the word Caucasian was originally a term for
people from the Caucasus region; Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, Russia, and Turkey. A
German philosopher, Christoph Meiners, believed that the people from this region were superior
because of their light skin. He then thought that people from European decent were also from this
region due to their skin color and considered them Caucasian as

Defending Slavery Essay
Defending Slavery The purpose of this paper is to discuss the issue of African slavery in America in
the antebellum by late eighteenth century and before the antebellum crisis as discussed in Paul
Finkelman's book: Defending Slavery. This paper will summarize the first part of book taking as a
main topic racial aspects of the slavery. After the introductory summary , this paper will focus in
two specific sections found in the second part of the book: "Religion and Slavery" and "Racial

All of these documents were intended to support the theory that black race was not only different
that white race but their origins came from different roots. Cartwright and Nott had similar
approach. Their explanation from the biological standpoint was in some point linked to a religious
interpretation of then bible. Thus, Cartwright depicts the origin of the three most predominant racial
groups on Earth: Asian, Europeans and Blacks. He cites the Book of Genesis with the story of Noah
and his three sons nd their settlements in three different geographical areas: North of Europe, Asia
and Africa. According to Cartwright's biblical interpretation, this last continent was occupied by
Cannan and his descendents were not only black race but also were designated by God;s will to be
servant. Josiah Nott extensively wrote papers about race. His argument were based on a theory
known as polygenesis. Nott claimed that there had been multiple creations producing superior and
inferior races and black race was destined to permanent inferiority. George Fitzhugh's sociological
opinion about slavery were irrational; he stated that slavery was the most perfect institution ever

Darwin 's Theory On Evolution
Darwin's theory on Evolution Evolution is the belief that all living forms including humans came
from ancient ancestors. Evolution is what makes life possible. It allows organisms to adapt to the
environment as it changes. In Biology, theory of evolution does not tell us how life began on earth,
but it helps us understand how life came into existence, diversified in many forms on earth, and
fossil records. Scientists have many theories on evolution. One of the theories suggests all the
healthy species can reproduce but they do so imperfectly. Small variations can build up over
generations to create dramatic differences in the body form and function of living creature, called
biological evolution. Evidence overwhelmingly suggests that all life on earth is related. Charles
Robert Darwin, an English naturalist and geologist, established that all species of life on earth have
descended over time from common ancestors. In 1859, Darwin released his theory of evolution in
The Origin of Species. Darwin presents his idea that species evolved through process called Nature
Selection. Charles Darwin says:
"Thus, from the war of nature, from famine and death, the most exalted object which we are capable
of conceiving, namely, the production of the higher animals, directly follows. There is grandeur in
this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into
one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of

Paul Johnson
Paul Johnson held Charles Darwin in very high regard, calling him a "gentleman scientist" many
times throughout his analysis. Overall he saw Darwin as inquisitive and conscientious of the world
around him; often not publishing anything that would cause an uproar in the public or the church.
Johnson also praises Darwin's ability to work in many different fields of science going as far at to
call Darwin a shavnt, or someone with an extreme ability and intelligence who often times burdened
with a severe mental handicap. It is unknown whether Darwin was, in fact, a shavant or not Johnson
however certainly believed that he was. Darwin's luck began almost before conception. His genetics

was derived from Darwin's friends," (103). In the Descent of Man, Darwin had several racial and
sexist slurs that were highly unpopular to the point that his readers wrote him several letters asking
him to remove them. His generalizations were so that he had almost no concrete evidence to support
his work other than what was in "uncivilized and backward" cultures and history. Another attributing
factor to the failure of Decent is that he had no clear argument or direction of thoughts in this work
as opposed to Origins which had a clear thesis and concentrated argument throughout. But the most
glaring failure was the title. The Descent of Man implies that the book would be about humans;
when in reality there were only two chapters on the subject. The largest portion of the book was
lower classes of the animal kingdom, for which he had boundless knowledge. His lack of knowledge
in anthropology is very apparent in this. Even with a surgeon for a father he failed to understand
basic human anatomy and psychological makeup. This lack of understanding ultimately weakened
his book to the point that it would have failed if Oregon had not been published

What Is The Relationship Between Interaction And Identity
This section contains only a summary of "Chapter 7 on The Kinship, Interaction and Identity" from
the book "The Baba of Melaka: Culture Identity of a Chinese Peranakan community in Malaysia"
written by Tan Chee Beng which was published in 1988. The author's main purpose for writing this
chapter is to identify in what ways is the Peranakan Chinese kinship system built based on the
concept of social interaction between Baba and the non–Baba Chinese as well as other ethnic
groups, especially amongst the Malays and the experience of interaction with others (Chee Beng,
1988, p. 198).
Within this chapter, the author suggested that the nature of intra ethnic and interethnic interaction
built its self identification. Baba in Bukit Rambai closely interact among themselves as they
encounter each other on a daily basis to play a card game called ceki (p. 198). Within the category
"Baba", individuals are related to each other not just because of friendship, as is true of interethnic
interaction, but they are also related through kinship ties. Kinship is a significant institution
principle for intragroup interaction and in forming alliances. Among the Baba, social exchanges

Does Gilbert's Essay: Do Organisms Have A Common Ancestor?
The highly controversial topic about whether organisms share common descent if they have a
common ancestor or they arise independently still remains to this day. Both Scott Gilbert and
Charles Darwin write pieces in effort to express the idea that organisms share a common ancestor.
However, both do so in a unique way. Gilbert tries to express his proposition by writing a parable
about a native from South America being brought to England to learn a new religion and spread it to
his homeland. In doing so, Gilbert bases his parable off of the question of if the three churches all
arose independently or if they each share a common ancestor. Darwin, on the other hand, uses
language to express how it has evolved and branched away from a common ... Show more content

In Darwin's article, he states, "We find in distinct languages striking homologies due to community
of descent..." Homologies are similarities due to common ancestry. An example of this in language
is comparing French syntax to English syntax. They share the same subject–verb–direct object
sentences. Another example is cognates. The two languages, in essence, are different because they
are derived from two different cultures, however they share similarities which make them appear to
be common ancestors. Much like a moth and a bat, both have wings that are similar structures and
function alike. Therefore, it is believed that they originated from a common ancestor. Homologies
can occur in different areas as well, such as religion. Stated previously, it is believed that the
Anglican Church, the American Episcopal Church, and the Roman Catholic Church all share a
common ancestor. Despite the differences, "The rites, liturgy, and even the language of the Anglican
Church is almost identical to that of the American Episcopal Church with only slight differences.
Thus, there are numerous homologies that would not be expected if the two religions had two
separate sets of founders." Even though these specific churches were built in different locations,
there is too many similarities for it to be believed that they did not all branch off of and form from a

Why Evolution Is True?
Why is Evolution True Essay – Final
Over the past few centuries, humans have been questioning and debating over what makes evolution
true. In Jerry Coyne's work, Why Evolution is True, he noted two kinds of evidence from Darwin's
theory of evolution. The first evidence includes the six testable predictions of evolution: evolution,
gradualism, speciation, common–ancestry, natural selection, and nonselective mechanisms of
evolutionary change. The second evidence that Coyne noted in his work is the retrodiction. In
Coyne's work, Why Evolution is True, a retrodiction is the facts and data that are not necessarily
predicted by the theory of evolution but it makes sense only in the light of the theory of evolution.
Retrodiction uses present theories to explain events that happens in the past. Since evolution is a
slow process, theories could not be tested. Therefore, we explain the existence of vestigial structures
and how humans share a common ancestor with fish through the theory of evolution. Throughout
the text, examples of retrodiction are the imperfect adaptation of a panda's thumb and gill slits in the
beginning stages of a human embryo. Common ancestry is proven by the existence of fossils and
these evidences proves that evolution is true.
Imperfect adaptation is a fundamental element that makes up part of retrodiction. If a creature on
earth is perfectly adapted to their ways of life, they would thrive exponentially, but eventually all of
their food sources will go

Comparing The Black Cat And An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge

significantly to the discussion of the dark side of human nature. Literary devices in The Black Cat

used to get the point across of the dark side in human nature in various other stories as well. In The
Monkey's Paw, the son was just wished back to life but the father is afraid of what he will see. But
her husband was on his hands and knees groping wildly on the floor in search of the paw. If he could

husband frantically searching for the paw so he can wish his son away again. The dark side of the

previous son. She misses their son but the husband refuses to let the son in the house. He even refers
to his own son as "it" in the story. He is afraid of his own son. In the next story, instead of seeing the

story, Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, the main character, Payton, is being punished for trying to

closely encircled his neck" (Bierce). Imagery shows Payton being hanged for his wrongdoing, this

Stocker noticed that all parents make decisions for their children, he has let their children pick out

Growing Up In Plato's Republic
The first word of Plato's Republic is "Κατέβην" which translates to "go or come down."The
Republic begins with Socrates, who says "I went down (κατέβην) yesterday to the Peiraeus with
Glaucon..." Although κατέβην might not have any literal poetic implications, I think it worthwhile to
discuss the theme of decent and where else it shows up in the Republic. The most notable examples
are the cave allegory, and the story or Er, who tells of what happens after death. In the case of the
cave, the philosophers who have reached enlightenment must go back down to the cave to share
what they've learned. In the story of Er, the souls that have reached purification descend from
heaven to come back to earth. The theme of descent is the key part in both these stories, and shall be
explored.

In this allegory, the men trapped in the cave can see only the projected shadows of the humans

Short Summary Of Araby
James Joyce tells a story of a young boy around the age of eleven, who lives with his uncle and aunt
in an uninhabited house at the end of a blind corner. He likes to play with his friends till late night.
Araby also known as the bazaar was the place he wishes to visit. This story is mainly based on the
type of place where they live, his fondness toward his friend's sister, and the Araby(bazaar) where he
wanted to go. According to the story the place they live sounds awful because as he mentioned "The
former tenant of our house, a priest, had died in the back drawing–room" (Joyce 86). This place
doesn't sounds adequate enough for a child to live in because it can cause unnecessary fear for the
child. Also he was playing in the contaminating place till late night in freezing cold, which can be
proven harmful for a child's physical health. Once his aunt send him to market to pick up some of
the parcels, on his way he saw drunken men, druggies, and some bad people were cursing on each
other. Those were the worst things for a child to see, and a child was not supposed to send to those
kind of market as well. Living in this type of environment is dangerous for the child's future because
a child learn faster by observing an adult . His uncle and aunt were careless about him. They never
paid attention to the things he had been doing during their absence. On the other hand, they should
have used all the bad things to give him an example that, if he started doing those things he will
never able to be a successful man. He will be stuck there as those people were, and never will able
to see a good lifestyle. But his uncle and aunt had never bother themselves to teach him anything. As
he likes to play with Mangan everyday. Most of the time Mangan's sister come out to call him for

by little he started liking her, but he was scared to talk to her. Except some casual talks. He was in

What Is The Evolution Of Iguana

  • 1. What Is The Evolution Of Iguana Evolution of the iguana. First sentence: This first sentence makes me want to explain how iguanas adapt to their environment thanks to their ability to change color and hide from predators and keep a look out for how to avoid danger also how it evolved over time to be so amazing. They actually are very fun to watch too but you know they can get mad too. Basically i'm trying to say how impressive they are from giant lizard and marine snakes to small iguanas. Well i'm just doing this on iguanas because i love how they change colors. They can avoid being seen so good. They are pretty smart because of how they don't move until they are ready to attack. They tongue is pretty long and can be pretty fast when using to catch stuff like flies. 1. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They have more abilities than ever and survive without much stuff. Their skills to hide, camuflash, sprint, and just relax having so much confidence. Also they have better skin and can climb pretty easy unlike their ancestors. In my opinion i think they're much better since now they won't want to eat us. Also they don't mind if this animal in next to them unless it's a predator. But if the animal is pretty small the iguana will eat it. This is my last sentence and i just want to say thanks to evolution for everything, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Song Of The Yami Analysis SONG OF THE ANCESTORS The Song is considered the absolute law of the Yami with no room for gray areas or interpretation and their myths, unlike in western culture where the word myth is understood as false, are considered as the only real truths and never to be questioned. It holds all the taboos, rituals, and social reasoning of the Yami, and the history of the family reciting until present time. This genealogy component of the song is why each family has their own version of creation in the Song. However, the Yami are also aware of the different variations of the events in their stories, and some narrators even acknowledge these differences within the telling of their own telling (themes cp 4). "The main purpose of the narrative is to reinforce the listeners' knowledge of their descent, which includes the territorial rights of their lineage and precise information on land, water, and pasture ownership...The correct succession of personal names as related to the names of settlements and fields is more important than what happened to the bearers of the names themselves" (lim of nar sec cp6) Certain ancestral themes in the Song are heritage of the various villages, but they can be shared by the Yami and storytellers may mix the themes freely.(thems, cp 4) The Song and Ecological Conservation In current days, in the face of governmental practices causing the destruction of Irala's landscape, soil nutrients, fishing population, and the slow deterioration of the ... • 5. The Role of the Narrator in Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Black Cat' The narrator in "The Black Cat" Edgar Allan Poe is well–known for his captivating tales of the macabre through eloquence and wit. In many of his short stories, Poe was able to exploit his audience's fears through allegory and descriptive details of murder and madness. One of Poe's captivating, yet mad, narrators helms "The Black Cat," a tale of paranoia, alcoholism, and murder. There are several things that make the narrator an intriguing character including his psychological state, the imp of the perverse, and the effect that alcoholism has on him. Like in many of his tales, the narrator murders both his beloved Pluto and his wife, on two separate occasions, yet denies that he has been stricken by madness and is instead intent on setting the record straight. While the narrator blames his actions on his alcoholism, it can be argued that his actions were not only influenced by alcohol, but also by his psyche. For example, he believes that his beloved Pluto's doppelgänger is out to get him. Not only is the doppelgänger a constant reminder of how badly the narrator treated his cat, but it also serves as a constant reminder of how he killed it; the doppelgänger is missing an eye, just like Pluto, and also has a mark that resembles a noose, which is how the narrator killed his cat. It is the doppelgänger's physical appearance that drives the narrator to believe that it is his duty to destroy it before it destroys him. While the narrator never intended on lashing out ... • 7. Inherit The Wind, By Charles Darwin Every living thing on this planet has evolved from the same original specie. Having this information, could it not be concluded that all living things are, to some degree, related? Yes. To further explain, evolution is a theory that states that organisms have diversified or in other words, have changed into a more complex living thing. In the book Inherit The Wind, the townsfolk of the play disagree heavily with the theory of evolution. Common ancestry is the theory that states that all living things share a common ancestor or common descendent, which then ties into evolution. Speciation, both allopatric and parapatric, show evidence for common ancestry. Speciation is when new species arise due to an evolutionary process. There are multiple and observable accounts that are used to support the theory of common ancestry. Charles Darwin's book, The Descent of Man And Selection in Relation to Sex, goes into specifics with these accounts with placental mammals. Placental mammals are mammals that nourish their embryos using the mother 's blood supply. Common Ancestry in placental mammals provides sufficient scientific evidence, such as the similarities in bone structures and genetic coding between animals, to support the theory of evolution. One of the biggest arguments against the theory of evolution and the theory of common ancestry is that they are theories. A scientific theory is an explanation for something in the natural world supported by facts and has successfully gone ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Jello: A Narrative Fiction I was woken up by Jello meowing and pawing at my head, causing me to throw my pillow over my head. "Shut your cat up, Mia," Dan groaned, throwing something at Jello. I rolled my eyes, "Do you have a death wish?" I called, quickly getting up and picking up my cat before he clawed Dan. He frowned, "No but he obviously has anger issues..." "Remind me not to wake you up early," I growled. Dan make a face before sticking his tongue out and topping it off with a middle finger. "I have a satanic cat and I'm not afraid to use him," I warned, holding Jello a couple inches in front of me. "Alright, alright, alright!" • 15. The Race Of Man By Charles Darwin Charles Darwin's essay, "The Race of Man", is a scientific explanation for the similarities among humans, which argues whether man is subdivided into species, or more closely resemble subspecies or races. Darwin uses his theory of evolution to explain why there is a multitude of similarities in the development and inventive minds of all races, yet any observed differences are negligible. Furthermore, most differences that are visible in man today "cannot be of much importance" (217), however, if such differences were important, natural selection would have either "fixed and preserved or eliminated" (217) any distinction. Darwin begins by explaining the causation of most resemblances throughout all race. Charles Darwin describes the distinct descendants of man by comparing it to the descendants of domesticated animals. Darwin questions, "whether the various races have arisen from one or more species" (213), he continues, "the domesticated races of the dog, for instance, have acquired their present amount of differences since some one species was first domesticated by man" (213) while compared to man, "no such question ... Nevertheless, there is no prominent variances, even among people who live in different climates. Therefore, these differences are negligible compared to the similarities. Moreover, Darwin believes, "none of the differences between the races of man are of any direct or special service to him" (217). Taking this into consideration, man's differences are not of any ... • 17. Materialism In Vietnam I finally arrived at the mansion for the annual family reunion. Many of my relatives and I were staying at my uncle's mansion in Happy Valley– Happy Valley is the Beverly Hills of Oregon. There were over thirty five of my relatives in Oregon at the time and most of the relatives from California were staying at the mansion. I never fully understood how materialistic my family was until I went to this house for the hundredth time during freshman year. "Why can't you cook like my sister?!" my uncle exclaimed at his wife as he was eating the soup that my aunt cooked. I was a freshman in highschool when I heard my uncle say this. No one seemed to be phased by what my uncle said, besides me. I was infuriated, bothered, and confused because no one said anything to my disrespectful uncle. My vast family heard him, but it was as if this comment was a normal thing to hear. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It's different," and blabbed on for about three minutes. I rudely spat back, "Why do you guys claim to be modern and hip when your logic is still in Vietnam? Why do you all enforce gender roles? Why do you all care more about the material side of each other and not the inside? You all try so hard to impress each other, but we are all family and that's pathetic." My family did not reply to this and stared at me with disbelief. A few of my younger aunts and uncles looked proud of me. However, the older relatives looked disappointed in me. My dad told me to go downstairs and think about what I have said. As I headed downstairs I could hear "hon lao" being said, which means disrespectful. I knew that I was being a brat. I talked back to the people feeding me. However, I was honestly quite satisfied with what I said, even if it was petty and disrespectful. • 19. The Descent into a Digital Culture The Descent into a Digital Culture In this century our culture is changing rapidly. Just in the last 30 years alone our scientific understanding, technological achievements, and fragmentation of values has transformed faster than in the previous 100 years alone. With our express style culture change, one has to wonder what will be said about our culture another hundred years in the future. What is the one thing that has defined us as who we are? A section on our slow ascent into socialism may be in order, or maybe a chapter on our obsession with going green. However, I would suggest that the first chapter in a humanities book of 2113 on our culture title "The Descent into a Digital Culture". Our culture is most defined by the digital ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This has led to a culture in which one does not wait for something, but expects to receive whatever they desire instantly. This did not just translate into knowledge or things we needed. The average person in the U.S today no longer waits to save up the needed funds to buy a new flat screen or other new widget. Instead they finance it or put it on credit. Like their digital life on the internet they expect it instantly. Our Descent into a Digital Culture of instant gratification has become part of who we are. How can our digital culture be explained without our sudden need to cease communication with others. That is unless it involves a smartphone or a twitter page. The previous generations of the United States use to socialize at social events and would even go out and visit people that they wanted to talk to. Sometimes they would actually put their thoughts down a piece of dried would pulp and mail it. The digital culture that ours has become carries out these tasks in a rather different fashion. In modern times social events can be defined as a group chat on Facebook. As far as visiting other human beings, who needs to when there is twitter. Writing letters has become a very archaic form of communication replaced by email. In our present culture most believe that the entire social stimulus that one requires can be found on Facebook or Snap chat. In the wind she can smell the scent of her ancestors made from crushed pale blue leaves of the mountain. The smell is coming from up the mountain side from which her ancestors descended from, where the mountain lion laid down and ate their deer. It is better to be where she once came from, where her ancestors came from, up on that mountain watching nature. The elderly that remember it once are all gone, the old songs of ancestors are forgotten, and the story where it all began died with its memory. The spirits of the ancestors roam the earth and go back up to that mountain where she originated from. She is connected with the spirits and is unable to part with them, there is almost an interdependency with them. Thomas from the movie Smoke Signals tries very hard to remain connected with his Native American Ancestors. Thomas likes to think of himself as a story teller like those of his ancestor tribes. He spends his time telling people stories that are based on reality and fiction in order to create symbolism and meaning to life. Arnold uses nature and its elements to describe many of his stories. An example of this is when he describes himself and Victor as children of fire and ash. Like Silko, he uses elements to describe where he came from. At times it seems as though Thomas does not really understand his ancestry but continues to try and use their ways in his story telling. Victor struggles to identify himself as a Native American. We see him describe what an Indian is supposed to be like and it is loosely connected with his ancestry. Unlike the protagonist of the poem he is unable to connect with the land and his ancestors. If replicators are meant to replicate and reproduce how did they end up making a living organism? The first cell is presumed to have arisen by the enclosure of self–replicating RNA in a membrane composed of phospholipids which are the principal components of cell membranes. The process of replication lead to the first cell which is called LUCA (Last Universal Common Ancestor). Some viruses may remain dormant inside host cells for long periods, causing no obvious change in their host cells, but once stimulated new viruses are formed, self–assemble, and burst out of the host cell, killing the cell and going on to infect other cells. All this is just a constant battle between the host and cell. Without a host cell, viruses cannot carry out their life–sustaining functions or reproduce. They cannot synthesize proteins, because they lack ribosomes and must use the ribosomes of their host cells to translate viral messenger RNA into viral proteins. • 25. The Descent of the Despot: Sleep Deprivation,... Autocracy is in. From "Kim Jong–Il Looking at Things," a popular blog featuring pictures of former North Korean dictator Kim Jong–Il looking at things, to a recent cinematic adaptation of Idi Amin's maniacal reign of terror, fortuitously titled The Last King of Scotland, there is something about despotic regimes that fascinate the western world, albeit from the comforting privilege of our overstuffed armchairs. Frequently, as in the film previously mentioned, western narratives concerning autocracy feature a story arc that traces the rapid rise of a despotic leader who seizes power, often in conjunction with an assassination or coup d'etat, which is followed by a gradually crescendoing, paranoia–fueled homicide binge that ultimately culminates in the death or deposition of the despotic protagonist, following a descending spiral into insanity. Although more than 400 years have elapsed since the first stage production of Macbeth, little has been done to disjoint the narrative frame it has established, and to the extent that modern reworkings, such as The Last King of Scotland, have attempted to renovate its facade, they have generally done little but dilute the complexity of the original, primarily on account of the fact that they take as their focus a single murderous autocrat, by necessity restricting the focus of the narrative to the descent into madness of a single individual. The idea of useless organs had been around long before Charles Darwin, but his idea for why they were there was the one that stuck. In his book "The Descent of Man" Darwin named a few organs that were considered absolutely useless or had very little service such as wisdom teeth, the appendix, the spleen, and the hind leg bones in whales. While functions of some of these parts such as the appendix and spleen have been discovered, Evolutionists still believe that vestigial are great evidence for the evolution. Evolutionists are unsure, but they do know that the mid tarsal break strongly points toward ancestry from apes. Creationists on the other hand who do not believe that humans descended from apes, must come up with an explanation for these useless functions and parts. Their simple explanation for useless organs and functions? They aren't useless. A random, meaningless organ in the body does not point toward a divine Creator, why would God put useless parts into his creation. He wouldn't. Genesis 1: 31 "God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning – the sixth day" If something is very good it isn't made with nonfunctional parts. That would mean that all organs must have a function that is noteworthy. If there isn't a function that would only mean that we haven't figured out what it is yet. Interestingly, Creationists view wisdom teeth in a similar way Evolutionists do. In countries that aren't as developed, technologically, people there do not eat as much processed food. As a result their jaws are stronger from chewing harder food. Their stronger jaws are able to accamodate the third molars. Also due to their tougher diet, their teeth wear down, so more teeth helps. • 29. Analysis Of The Black Cat By Heidi Hanrahan In Heidi Hanrahan's analysis of "The Black Cat," By Edgar Allen Poe, she starts off by claiming that this story is "Poe's commentary on nineteenth–century American domesticity"(Hanrahan, 40). Hanrahan then points out that Pluto should be viewed not as a symbol for something deeper, but as what he is in reality; the narrators pet. She uses excerpts and quotes from texts such as Uncle Tom's Cabin and The Lamplighter to support her claims that having and "Caring for animals, writers argued, helped people become better children and adults" (Hanrahan, 47). In these excerpts and quotes, parents and people who witnessed someone mistreating an animal either inflicted harm on the abuser or expressed great sympathy for the defenseless animal. Hanrahan explains that, because we must take care of these animals and treat them well, we can learn very important "moral lessons" from them. Ideally, everyone who owned a pet in the nineteenth–century was a person of high morals, therefore, according to Hanrahan, having a pet was "...a marker of domestic bliss and success."(Hanrahan, 42). Concluding her analysis, Hanrahan explains that by writing The Black Cat, Poe is responding "...to his fellow contemporaries' celebration of domesticity..." Poe does so by dismissing "...the comforting reassurance of domesticity..." by "Rejecting the idea that a loving home can ensure stability..." (Hanrahan, 53) instead he shows the side of domesticity that many people do not want to see. Poe's story explains how an ordinary and normally functioning home can quickly turn into a very calamitous situation. I believe that during Hanrahan's analysis of The Black Cat, she only scratched the surface of the story without giving it deeper thought. She states, "...the story resists full explanation or understanding, and that is precisely what is so disturbing about it..." (Hanrahan, 41). Although Hanrahan's analysis covers the many different angles of domesticity and explains that there is no reason behind the narrator's actions, she fails to examine the narrators shift in mental state throughout the story. Poe explains the shift in the narrators mental state as a message to his fellow contemporaries showing the devolution from domestic sanity to insanity. For ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was too painful to look at until I started to grieve. The book also mentioned that some children may want to make something in memory of the loss of the individual. It could be in the form of a collage, memory box, a memory book, a drawing, a poem, a short movie, a song, a play, a painting, whatever the child feels like making is good. Some children may even ask others to get involved in the project. Something that stood out for me in the book as well was that children are encouraged to hold a memorial service. A random classification of modern humans, sometimes based on any or a combination of various physical characteristics; such as skin color, facial form, or eye shape. In social work, we are often taught about individuals cultures and ethnicities in order to improve our practice and competence. Race on the other hand was created based on how people look, rather than their cultural decent, what religion they practice, or where they currently live. Many individuals are discriminated against based on looks which affects their daily living. As social workers we must be aware of different races and how they are discriminated against, in order to better serve each individual. It is also important for social workers to understand their own race and how if affects other races. The White Race and My Understanding Understanding ones own race is important in social work practice and assists in learning other's races. • 43. Darwin 's Theory On Evolution Darwin's theory on Evolution Evolution is the belief that all living forms including humans came from ancient ancestors. Evolution is what makes life possible. It allows organisms to adapt to the environment as it changes. In Biology, theory of evolution does not tell us how life began on earth, but it helps us understand how life came into existence, diversified in many forms on earth, and fossil records. Scientists have many theories on evolution. One of the theories suggests all the healthy species can reproduce but they do so imperfectly. Small variations can build up over generations to create dramatic differences in the body form and function of living creature, called biological evolution. Evidence overwhelmingly suggests that all life on earth is related. Charles Robert Darwin, an English naturalist and geologist, established that all species of life on earth have descended over time from common ancestors. In 1859, Darwin released his theory of evolution in The Origin of Species. Darwin presents his idea that species evolved through process called Nature Selection. Charles Darwin says: "Thus, from the war of nature, from famine and death, the most exalted object which we are capable of conceiving, namely, the production of the higher animals, directly follows. Both Scott Gilbert and Charles Darwin write pieces in effort to express the idea that organisms share a common ancestor. However, both do so in a unique way. Gilbert tries to express his proposition by writing a parable about a native from South America being brought to England to learn a new religion and spread it to his homeland. In doing so, Gilbert bases his parable off of the question of if the three churches all arose independently or if they each share a common ancestor. Darwin, on the other hand, uses language to express how it has evolved and branched away from a common ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Darwin's article, he states, "We find in distinct languages striking homologies due to community of descent..." Homologies are similarities due to common ancestry. An example of this in language is comparing French syntax to English syntax. They share the same subject–verb–direct object sentences. Another example is cognates. The two languages, in essence, are different because they are derived from two different cultures, however they share similarities which make them appear to be common ancestors. Much like a moth and a bat, both have wings that are similar structures and function alike. Therefore, it is believed that they originated from a common ancestor. Homologies can occur in different areas as well, such as religion. Stated previously, it is believed that the Anglican Church, the American Episcopal Church, and the Roman Catholic Church all share a common ancestor. Despite the differences, "The rites, liturgy, and even the language of the Anglican Church is almost identical to that of the American Episcopal Church with only slight differences. Thus, there are numerous homologies that would not be expected if the two religions had two separate sets of founders." Even though these specific churches were built in different locations, there is too many similarities for it to be believed that they did not all branch off of and form from a common ... • 59. Descriptive Essay On A Little Accident Brooklynn Burchett Tiny Twins I popped up from my seat to look out the window, to see all the cars surrounding us at all angles. Blowing their horns, creating a chorus of sound. Some lackluster, like our minivan, so plain compared to the bright yellow taxis that swarmed the street. I was so excited to have seen a taxi, it was something I had been looking forward to. "Look mom a taxi!" I exclaimed. "That's nice honey," she replied unenthusiastically, looking down at her map. "Take a left up here." She said to my dad, driving the car. "Are we almost there?" My sister, Molly, piped up, sensing my excitement. My dad just sighed and ignored her. I craned my head to see out the window, the entire window was filled with skyscrapers, so tall I couldn't see the sky. It struck me with wonder as I whipped my head from side to side, trying to take it all in. Molly was mimicking me, she looked around, taking in her new environment. I turned around to see how my brother, James, was reacting. He, unsurprisingly, was asleep. Eventually, we pulled over and got out of the car. This area was quieter than the rest, but still loud. I knew we must be in Brooklyn now. You could still hear bustle of the city, but it faded into the background, a white noise. I stepped onto the sidewalk. I stared up into the sky. The buildings were much taller than I imagined. The city smelled of cigarette smoke, the tinge of not quite fresh air. My parents led us up a brick stairway and through a screen door, ... • 63. Why Evolution Is True? Why is Evolution True Essay – Final Over the past few centuries, humans have been questioning and debating over what makes evolution true. In Jerry Coyne's work, Why Evolution is True, he noted two kinds of evidence from Darwin's theory of evolution. The first evidence includes the six testable predictions of evolution: evolution, gradualism, speciation, common–ancestry, natural selection, and nonselective mechanisms of evolutionary change. The second evidence that Coyne noted in his work is the retrodiction. In Coyne's work, Why Evolution is True, a retrodiction is the facts and data that are not necessarily predicted by the theory of evolution but it makes sense only in the light of the theory of evolution. Retrodiction uses present theories to explain events that happens in the past. Since evolution is a slow process, theories could not be tested. Therefore, we explain the existence of vestigial structures and how humans share a common ancestor with fish through the theory of evolution. Throughout the text, examples of retrodiction are the imperfect adaptation of a panda's thumb and gill slits in the beginning stages of a human embryo. Common ancestry is proven by the existence of fossils and these evidences proves that evolution is true. Imperfect adaptation is a fundamental element that makes up part of retrodiction. If a creature on earth is perfectly adapted to their ways of life, they would thrive exponentially, but eventually all of their food sources will go ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Comparing The Black Cat And An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge An intriguing article states: "We humans are capable of immense love and sensitivity but we are also capable of greed, hatred, and brutality...are humans essentially 'good' and, if so, what is the cause of our 'evil' side? Are we evil by design or corruption?"(The Dark Side). This quote relates significantly to the discussion of the dark side of human nature. Literary devices in The Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe, The Monkey's Paw by W.W. Jacobs, and An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge Ambrose Bierce show how every person has a dark side, it just takes the right moment and setting to reveal it. First, the authors use imagery to expose the depth of human nature and vividly shows the ruthlessness of what humans are capable of. Then the stories continue ... He murdered his own wife and blames it on the "hideous beast" who supposedly provoked him. He looks at the cat with such a vengeful force for no reason other than the cat bothers him. Imagery is used to get the point across of the dark side in human nature in various other stories as well. In The Monkey's Paw, the son was just wished back to life but the father is afraid of what he will see. But her husband was on his hands and knees groping wildly on the floor in search of the paw. If he could only find it before the thing got in" (Jacobs). In this story imagery is portrayed by showing the husband frantically searching for the paw so he can wish his son away again. The dark side of the husband is revealed because his wife wants their son back even if he wouldn't look like their previous son. She misses their son but the husband refuses to let the son in the house. He even refers to his own son as "it" in the story. He is afraid of his own son. In the next story, instead of seeing the dark side in people through their thoughts, imagery is used to explain actions taking place. In the story, Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, the main character, Payton, is being punished for trying to do harm to the bridge. "The man's hands were behind his back. Wrists bound with a cord. A rope closely encircled his neck" (Bierce). Imagery shows Payton being hanged for his wrongdoing, this form of punishment shows the dark side of human nature because they are purposefully taking someone's live away in a cruel style. Taking someone's life away for any reason is unnecessary and can really showcase how dark human ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The stories are titled "Cat and Rat:The Legend of the Chinese Zodiacs" and "How Cats and Mice Became Enemies". These stories are both legends. They both have many similarities and differences. In this paragraph I am going to compare the two stories. One is that in both stories the cat and mouse/rat started as best friends and ended as enemies. Also the mouse/rat cheated and had negative character traits in the stories. The cat got angry because the rat was selfish in both of these legends. In these stories the ouse bribed the cat with fish. Both of these legends explain why cats hate mice/rats. Now I am going to talk about the differences in both of these stories. • 69. Similarities Between Witterick And David Stocker Kathy Witterick (38) and David Stocker (39) are the parents of Jazz (5), Kio (2), and Storm; who is being raised genderless. Storm's gender has not been disclosed to anyone other than their family. The family receives a lot of questions about the child's gender but they just brush it off. This all started when Jazz, born a boy, decided he liked girlish items. Many have said they are leading their children's lives to a life full of bullying and ridicule. Witterick and Stocker believe they are giving their children the freedom of being who they want to be. Stocker noticed that all parents make decisions for their children, he has let their children pick out their clothes since 18 months. The parents only want to help their children make decisions for themselves. The most similar developmental theory to compare to this scenario would be Talcott Parsons, creator of structural functionalism. He believed that "society will create structures within itself that will assist with its fundamental functioning requirements." In this case, as Storm grows and decides what (s)he wants to become, the environment will help to make that decision. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Black Cat Consequences The Consequences Behind Bloodshed In his short story "The Black Cat," Edgar Allan Poe uses the drastic changes in one's mind by drinking alcohol and the pressure of guilt to create an unreliable narrator, because it can easily modify the narrator's judgement towards his cat, Pluto. Before the narrator starts drinking, he loves animals and contain a variety of them in his house. Right after the addiction of alcohol, the narrator physically and verbally abuses his pets, which causes "one night, returning home, much intoxicated, from one of [his] haunts about town, [he] [fancy] that [Pluto] [avoids] [his] presence" (Poe 5). • 73. Growing Up In Plato's Republic The first word of Plato's Republic is "Κατέβην" which translates to "go or come down."The Republic begins with Socrates, who says "I went down (κατέβην) yesterday to the Peiraeus with Glaucon..." Although κατέβην might not have any literal poetic implications, I think it worthwhile to discuss the theme of decent and where else it shows up in the Republic. The most notable examples are the cave allegory, and the story or Er, who tells of what happens after death. In the case of the cave, the philosophers who have reached enlightenment must go back down to the cave to share what they've learned. In the story of Er, the souls that have reached purification descend from heaven to come back to earth. The theme of descent is the key part in both these stories, and shall be explored. In book seven of the Republic, Socrates introduces Glaucon to the allegory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this allegory, the men trapped in the cave can see only the projected shadows of the humans carrying artifacts, and not the artifacts themselves. Yet they still, as Socrates says, "hold that the truth is nothing other than the shadows of artificial things." In this way, being down in the cave is the same as being unable to see the real truth to things, and being unable to reach enlightenment. The only enlightened ones are the ones who by some means can leave the cave and see things for what they are. Socrates calls them the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Tortoiseshell Research Paper Tortoiseshell describes a coat coloring found mostly in female cats. Cats of this color are mottled, with patches of orange or cream and chocolate, black or blue. They are sometimes called torties for short. The term "tortoiseshell" is typically reserved for cats with brindled coats that have relatively few or no white markings. Those that are largely white with red and brown patches (rather than a brindled aspect) are described as tortoiseshell–and–white (in the United Kingdom) or calico (in Canada and the United States). Tortoiseshells and Calicos are not specific breeds of cat. The Tortoiseshell markings appear in many different breeds as well as in non–purebred domestic cats. The parent–less environment forces the Monster to let his curiosity serves as a starting point. Distort from their starting point, the Monster begins to form an opinion about himself. "I viewed myself in the transparent pool! At first I started back, unable to believe that was indeed who I was reflected in the mirror: and when I became fully convinced that I was in the reality the monster that I am, I was filled with bitterest sensation of despondence and mortification" (16. 116–17). The pool serves as conduit to help The Monster notice the aesthetic differences between himself and the cottagers. However, it sets the pace for the Monster to begin to unfairly desire that which is unattainable. Exhibitive in the comparison, is the rapid rate at which the Monster is acquiring knowledge. Amidst knowledge, and its acquisition, it is paramount that misconceptions and comparisons to others, be put in perspective, but this is impossible. On his own, he formulates an opinion and does not have another individual to challenge his belief system. The philosophical opposition would present an alternative viewpoint from which to see himself. The silence that surrounds him plants the seed which creates the potential to manifest into something more devious, and destructive, as per his superhuman abilities. • 79. Short Summary Of Araby James Joyce tells a story of a young boy around the age of eleven, who lives with his uncle and aunt in an uninhabited house at the end of a blind corner. He likes to play with his friends till late night. Araby also known as the bazaar was the place he wishes to visit. This story is mainly based on the type of place where they live, his fondness toward his friend's sister, and the Araby(bazaar) where he wanted to go. According to the story the place they live sounds awful because as he mentioned "The former tenant of our house, a priest, had died in the back drawing–room" (Joyce 86). This place doesn't sounds adequate enough for a child to live in because it can cause unnecessary fear for the child. Also he was playing in the contaminating place till late night in freezing cold, which can be proven harmful for a child's physical health. Once his aunt send him to market to pick up some of the parcels, on his way he saw drunken men, druggies, and some bad people were cursing on each other. Those were the worst things for a child to see, and a child was not supposed to send to those kind of market as well. Living in this type of environment is dangerous for the child's future because a child learn faster by observing an adult . His uncle and aunt were careless about him. They never paid attention to the things he had been doing during their absence. On the other hand, they should have used all the bad things to give him an example that, if he started doing those things he will never able to be a successful man. He will be stuck there as those people were, and never will able to see a good lifestyle. But his uncle and aunt had never bother themselves to teach him anything. As he likes to play with Mangan everyday. Most of the time Mangan's sister come out to call him for tea, and he (Joyce as a child) likes to watch his sister, every–time she come out of her house. A little by little he started liking her, but he was scared to talk to her. Except some casual talks. He was in love with her because everyday he uses different techniques to take a glance at her.
