Speech On Travel In Mumbai
Bombay was also known as Mumbai. When Britishers came to India they change a lot of cities name and Bombay was the one in it. After Britishers
went back, Bombay was called by Mumbai. Mumbai is the dream city of every Indian because Mumbai is the biggest city in India. Approximately,
more than 15 million people live in Mumbai and it is a big city. The dangerous thing in Mumbai is the trains of Mumbai's local station. It is very risky
to travel I the travel in Mumbai.
I have traveled in train in Mumbai and that the first and last time I traveled on the train. From my personal experience, I would say that it's really
risky and dangerous to travel. There are 1000 of people who die because of the traffic and because of traveling in a train. On page 158, the last line of
the 1st paragraph, Nasirbhai talks about people who put their life in danger because of their job. That is so true because in Mumbai people can't afford
to lose their job because Mumbai is so costly and the traffic of Mumbai last forever so people choose train instead of driving their own car. So they risk
their life daily by going on a train.
I found that shocking about 20,706 Mumbaikers was killed on the trains in the last five years. That's too much and it really shocking fact. So many
people die in this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Especially in trains, there are so many people sitting to just to rob you. I am Indian it didn't ever happen to me but when they see a foreigner guy or

station is the worst station among all the Mumbai's railways station. I have been there and the train is just horrible. There is no place to even stand.
Small kids can never travel in a train because they are going to get lost in the train from their

In 1534, the Portuguese appropriated the islands from Bahadur Shah of Gujarat. They were ceded to Charles II of England in 1661, as dowry for
Catherine de Braganza.
The population quickly rose from 10,000 in 1661, to 60,000 in 1675. In 1687, the British East India Company transferred its headquarters from Surat to
Mumbai. The city eventually became the headquarters of the Bombay Presidency. The opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 transformed Bombay into
one of the largest seaports on the Arabian Sea. Over the next thirty years, the city grew into a major urban centre, spurred by an improvement in
infrastructure and the construction of many of the city's institutions. The population of the city swelled to one million by 1906, making it the second
largest in India after Calcutta.
As capital of the Bombay Presidency, it was a major base for the Indian independence movement, with the Quit India Movement called by Mahatma
Gandhi in 1942 being its most rubric event. After India's independence in 1947, it became the capital of Bombay State.
In the 1950 the city expanded to its present limits by incorporating parts of Salsette island which lay to the north. The late 1970s witnessed a
construction boom and a significant influx of migrants, which saw Mumbai overtake Kolkata as India's most populous city. This influx caused unrest
among local Maharashtrians who worried about the loss of culture, jobs,

Magical Mumbai Entices You To Stay Forever
Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is India's largest city and one of the largest cosmopolitan metropolises in the world. Mumbai is India's melting
pot with people from all over the country – and the world – converging together to live harmoniously. The city is the perfect representation of the
country's dichotomy: symbolised by the presence of Bollywood in the city, Mumbai is also host to India's largest slum population. The city itself is
huge, sprawling in every direction, and this makes sight–seeing in Mumbai much more exciting. From the rock cut caves of Elephanta to Dobi Ghats to
Marine Drive to Gateway to India, Mumbai has it all and more.

Capital City Of Maharashtra
Abstract:
Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra, experienced unprecedented floods on 26th and 27th July 2005 bringing the entire city to standstill for two
days. In span of 24 hours the Santa Cruz observatory at Mumbai airport recorded 944 mm of rain, which is highest recorded data for city in a day. The
flood caused direct economic damages of about $2 billion and over 500 fatalities. The flood also caused several infrastructural damages, over 2,000
buildings were completely destroyed and 50,000 were partially damaged, around 40,000 auto rickshaws and taxis were spoiled, several thousand
trucks and 850 BEST buses were damaged and local train and railway network of the city was also affected. The main cause behind such a huge loss
was over population and rapid urbanization. Mumbai, along with its neighbouring suburbs is the world's sixth most populated metropolitan area
with the population of around 19 million (MMRDA, 2003). The average population density is 27,209 persons per km2 .Due to the lack of
availability of safe land the economically backward people live in slums which are low lying and flood prone. Thus the maximum loss due to the
flood was barred by the people living in these low lying slums. The purpose of this research is to calculate the economic loss to the self employed
people and the people with micro enterprise living in these slums.

Climate change, rapid urbanization and limited available land are putting the highly populated cities in the

Short Essay On Ranwar
"Deep Roots are not reached by the frost" – J.R.R. Tolkiey The city of Mumbai is vast in its expressions of development, it comes along and takes
you by storm. A storm that changes your perspective in life and takes all the time you have to grow into and become part of a massive community. Yet
in the ever changing Mumbai comes a little village called Ranwar. Ranwar is one of the original 24 hamlets that made up Bandra since the earliest
documented history in early 1700s
A centuries old East Indian Village as one would say. Ranwar used to be a small village yet with Mumbai and its forces it has managed to now
stick to only 3 lanes. As tiny as it may sound Ranwar is full of character The Architecture the Small churches, The Culinary or even the Beautiful
Walls filled with graffiti, although a village that managed to remain for this long may have deep roots but have also evolved as a small society.
Ranwar may be A treat to one's eyes if he or she is a lover of old Historic landmarks but its only ranwar's outlook that comes out as historic, the
village itself is now very modern in their culture and traditions if compared back to the olden days.

Statement Of Purpose Statement For Mumbai
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE ABHIJEET REDEKAR
It was Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who said in October 2004: "When we talk of a resurgent Asia, people think of the great changes that have
come about in Shanghai. I share this aspiration to transform Mumbai in the next five years in such a manner that people would forget about Shanghai
and Mumbai will become a talking point," the prime minister said. "I have a dream that we can do it. I believe we can become number one through
modernization, expansion and development and make Mumbai the number one city in our country," Fast forward 11 years later to 2015 and here we
are, Mumbai is in no way an approximation of what Shanghai is today. Pollution, encroachment, traffic congestion and unplanned urbanization have
taken their toll on India's commercial capital.
It's not a complete failure though as Mumbai has got a new 8.8 km stretch of monorail track, the new T2 terminal of the Mumbai International Airport,
the Sahar Elevated Road, the first line of the Mumbai Metro's first phase and the 6.54 km Santacruz–Chembur Link Road. In the next few years, other

Explain How Culture Defines Me
"A nation's culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of it's people."
Mahatma Gandhi.
This quote perfectly sums up how I would like to say my culture defines me. Culture is a set of ethics or beliefs, that a certain group follows, and
shares. Well, that's at least how I would define it. Culture plays a major role in our lives. Growing up, moving from country to country every 3 years
was a regular thing for me. Since I have lived in a few different place, I've gotten to experience many different cultures. So, you then begin to think.
How does culture define me?, How does it define us? Living in different places and experiencing different cultures has really change me.
I'm a 100% Indian. The culture of India is what I most recognize with and exposed to initially, and that really shaped the way I am today. My parents
and I have been exposed to many different cultures over the years, whether we've traveled and visited countries or lived in those places, you get the
idea, we have been exposed to many cultures of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sometimes I don't even feel like I'm completely Indian, I am a hybrid of many cultures, because I'm built out of elements of each culture I've been
exposed to, I'm not explicitly one culture , I'm a combination of cultures taking on pieces I want, leaving behind massive chunks. This I would say is
an ongoing development. As I've said multiple times, living in different places and experiencing different cultures has really defined me as a person in
today's society. "A nation's culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of it's people." A quote from Gandhi that I mentioned earlier. This means that
inside our everybody there is a part of their culture residing in them, but for me there are different parts of different cultures residing in me. And that's
how culture defines

The Socio-Cultural Analysis Of India
The Socio–Cultural Analysis of India Culture is defined as "The arts, beliefs, customs, institutions, and other products of human work and thought
considered as a unit, especially with regard to a particular time or social group" by American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (2011).
Also, the Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms (2005) defines culture as "A feature of the terrain that has been constructed by man.
Included are such items as roads, buildings, and canals; boundary lines; and, in a broad sense, all names and legends on a map". In a nutshell,
culture is everything that makes up the basic ways of life. Culture is comprised of five basic characteristics. Culture is learned, shared, symbolic,
integrated, and dynamic (Bueno, 2012). This means that aspects of culture are spread by social interactions such as trade, language and other
communication technologies. Some of the more common forms of communication technologies and language are movies, television shows, literature,
arts, and local history. Symbolism is similar to the learned and shared aspects in many ways. Language, literature, and the arts are all major ways in
which the symbolism of a specific culture is spread. The integration of culture is based on pattern. The specific dimensions of social life create social
norms that are followed. The economy and politics are two of the more prevalent forms of social life that lead to the patterns of integration. Lastly,

The Poverty of Annawadi as seen in Behind the Beautiful Forevers The city of Mumbai has seen much growth in the past years. A string of elegant
hotels have been set up for travelers and high–class business men. An ever growing, top of the line airport has been built for those coming in and out of
the country. From the outside, Mumbai seems to have taken a liking to being internationally integrated with the rest of world, otherwise known as
globalization. This is not the case, however; as seen in Katherine Boo's novel Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai
Undercity. This novel is set in a slum right next to the Mumbai International Airport called... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This can be seen in the novel with Abdul's father, who suffers from tuberculosis. Diseases like tuberculosis are common in the streets of Annawadi and
numerous slums just like it. This makes it hard for Abdul's father to work which means he can not make money to support his family. This is a
common problem in many slums for many families who have members suffering from disease. Another problem is the upper class that dwells within
Mumbai. While the upper class is the minority class in Mumbai, they control close to all of Mumbai's profits saving it all for themselves and not
helping those in need. The fact that such a small percentage of Mumbai's inhabitants controls a large percentage of its wealth is major reason why so
many poverty stricken people were forced to live in slums like Annawadi. A third reason for the poverty of Annawadi can be seen in its slum lords.
The slums lords have total control over a slum and its inhabitants. If a person crosses paths with a slum lord, they are as good as dead. This fear of
the power of slum lords keeps the people down and makes it almost impossible to rise out of poverty. In Behind the Beautiful Forevers, Katherine
Boo writes "A decent life was the train that hadn't hit you, the slumlord you hadn't offended, the malaria you hadn't caught" (Page 45). These are all
factors in why Annawadi faced such severe poverty. It is easy to say that these all had an effect on Annawadi's absence

1986, there were 24 dance bars in the state of Maharashtra. Among all the others, Mumbai city is hailed as the crowning glory of the nation's
entertainment industry. Her history is linked to the migrant workers who were brought in to build the city. The traders, the sailors, the dockworkers,
the construction labour etc. demanded entertainment in form of 'playhouse', where folk theatre, dance and music performance used to take place. The
'mujra' culture started during this phase. Soon with change in time, the 'mujra' culture in Bombay was on decline due to loss of patronage. The dance

Traffic Management N Mumbai
INTRODUCTION
Traffic Management is a very serious issue today. Traffic in Mumbai especially is seen as a major drawback for the city. Everyone belonging to
this city of dreams has at some point in their life faced a traffic snarl which has made them wish they lived anywhere else. The core reason for
traffic is the buildup of several problems being neglected over the years. This includes, over population, bad infrastructure, lack of education,
uncontrolled reckless driving etc. I personally feel that using a car for a single person is a luxury if the same car is used for 5 persons travelling, it
makes sense. We have n number of people coming to the same area in their own cars without any accomplices. So, it makes sense to club the people...

Globalization In Katherine Boo's Novel Behind The...
The city of Mumbai has seen much growth in the past years. A string of hotels have been set up for travelers and high–class businessmen. An ever
growing, top of the line airport has been built for those coming in and out of the country. From the outside, Mumbai seems to enjoy being
internationally integrated with the rest of world, otherwise known as globalization. However, this is not the case as seen in Katherine Boo's novel
Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity. This novel is set in a slum right next to the Mumbai International
Airport called Annawadi. It focuses mainly on the life and story of the main character, Abdul. Abdul Husain and his family make a living by selling
scrap metal tossed out by the upper class of Mumbai. When looking at Abdul's story, one can see the corruption that made it near impossible for
globalization to have a positive effect on Annawadi. Abdul's relationship with his neighbor, one–legged Fatima, also shows how neighborhood
relationships were a barrier to Annawadi's ability to be a part of Mumbai's globalization. Before examining the reasons for Annawadi's lack of effects
from globalization, one must look at some of the reasons as to why Annawadi faces the shocking amount of poverty that it does. In the novel, Boo
writes, "What you don't want is always going to be with you. What you want is never going to be with you. Where you don't want to go, you have to
go. And the moment you think you're going to live

Mumbai Raindezvous
Mumbai Raindezvous
'Bombay is boiling men!', as a certain section of Mumbaikars exclaim, reveals the sweltering grip in which the city is held every summer. True the
mercury has not yet bust the slender tube in which it is trapped, but the sizzling weather has sent quite a large part of the city's population to their
hometowns. And those who are stuck behind for whatever reason battle bravely the heat. The flamboyance of the fiery Gul Mohurs is fading...Tempers
explode...Chilled beers perspire...Rain day predictions dominate conversations...Heaven is invoked... The pied crested cuckoo, the harbinger of the
monsoon shrills frantically in the leafy boughs...The rains can't be very far now!

Half the fun is in getting there as you stumble along a winding uphill trail that's strewn with stones and criss–crossed by swollen brooks. Once there, the
view is spectacular and the waterfall, a real delight – spouting a steady stream of foaming water.
The monsoon is a good time to wander around the city and admire the colonial architecture. The sandy brown stone delicately chiseled, takes on a soft
glow as the continuous rains wash it. The Gateway of India, Victoria Terminus (Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus), BMC building, High Court and university
complex should give you plenty of walking and some beautiful clean views. Then there's the view of rain–washed Mumbai from the Hanging Gardens
that is quite mesmerizing.
With the advent of the monsoon all of nature seems to have joined the celebration. Mumbai is blessed with quite a few well–maintained parks and
these have become little havens of beauty. The sprawling lawns are now covered in a thick carpet of the greenest grass. The huge trees are all
washed clean and their foliage gleams with freshness and vitality. The bright blooms in vibrant rainbow colours look like some precious stones and
add an air of festivity. A magical experience is to watch the raindrops dripping from the leaves, coruscating with colour as they catch the light.
One of the best places to revel in the beauty of nature in all its glory is the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Easily accessible from Borivili Station, you

City Pollution In Mumbai
1.)
The city I have chosen to research is the city of Mumbai which is located in the south west of India. Mumbai also known as Bombay is one of the
largest cities in the world with a vast population of 18.4 million people inhabiting it. Mumbai is the richest city in India and houses the most
billionaires and millionaires across the entirety of India, which is surprising due to there being approximately 700,000 to 1,000,000 living in Dharavi
which is the biggest slum currently in Mumbai.
2.)
Dharavi is the main slum in Mumbai It is approximately 216 hectares or 2.16 square kilometres that makes it the second largest slum in Asia and
the third largest slum in the world. Dharavi is easily one of the most densely populated places in the world. Recycling is becoming a very large
industry in Dharavi due to the amount of trash produced by Mumbai as a city ,there are approximately 250,000 citizens of Dharavi working to
recycle the trash of Mumbai. One of Dharavi's biggest problem is sanitation or cleanliness this is because of the disease spread across Dharavi
.Dharavi exports a variety of different around the world including leathers jewellery and a wide range of accessories. These goods are mainly
exported to Europe the United States and the Middle East, The estimated turnover is $500 million US to $650 million US.

My Thoughts About My Fieldwork Experience Essay
Ray Le Blond has been able to consolidate my thoughts about my fieldwork experience appropriately, thus, "You learn something every day if you
pay attention". I was going to Kachra Vahatuk Shramik Sangh (KVSS), Thane as part of my fieldwork on contract labours working in Thane
Municipal Corporation in Solid Waste Management Department for the second semester. Little did I know that going among the contract labours
and learning about them would inspire, educate and transform me. When I was initially informed that as part of my research methodology course
I would be expected to engage in field work I was equally atingled as I was timorous. Even though I had been involved in a couple of internships
after my graduation, I knew this was going to be disparate. After all, this was Tata Institute of Social Sciences where everything from the DH menu
to the pet dogs on campus are treated with sobriety; field work being a prerequisite would be no different. In the first week of my field work I
learned that the most dominant forms of precarious work in India are contract work especially workers working in solid waste management
department of municipal corporations, when workers are employed by a contractor who pays the worker their wages, and fix a direct fixed–term
contracts. The term of a direct fixed–term contract can be as short as a single day. These short–term contracts are commonly known as 'hire and fire'
contracts, as workers are under the constant threat of losing their job

A Brief Note On The City Of Mumbai
The city of Mumbai is the largest city in India, with a population of roughly 19.3 million people (World Population Review, 2014). One reason that
Mumbai has grown to such extent is its convenient location. Located on a peninsula off the west coast of India and boarding the Arabian Sea,
Mumbai has easy travel access to the Middle East and inland India (Earth Explorer, 2015). The Mithi River flows through the heart of the city and
connects into Mahim Bay, which provides further transportation capabilities for those in the area (2015). Both Powai and Vihar Lake are located
further inland and provide drinking water for the people of Mumbai ("Mumbai", 2014). North of Vihar Lake is Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the
world's largest national park, which is a preservation of forest area that covers 104 square kilometers (Mehta, 2013). This national park is not only rich
in resources and biodiversity; it also is a popular tourist area that has about 2 million annual visitors (2013). In addition to the thousands of plant and
animal species that live in this forest area, such animals in preservations include panthers, antelope, moose deer, wild bears, monkeys, leopards, tigers,
etc. Mumbai has a tropical wet and dry climate that does not fluctuate much throughout the year (Pacione, 2006). Average temperatures typically range
between 60–100В°F year round (2006). From January through May and October through December, Mumbai experiences dry weather with little rain.

The Real Slumdog 's Documentary
a. Globalization/pg. 29: The growing interconnections among nations due to the expansion of capitalism
The Real Slumdog's documentary was very interesting and eye opening. The amount of businesses that are run in the one square mile area of Dharavi
affect the entire capitalism of the world. Look at it this way, the Slumdog's as they're called make crappy money to make some very intricate products.
These products will be shipped from Mumbai to the rest of the world eventually. As the products are marked up by middle men, the money does not
filter its way back to the Dharavi slum. Thus, the products might be ten dollars in a store, but initially the slum workers get paid barely anything
and do not get to see the profit that they could. These people work to survive. Mumbai is a very intricate and bustling city, and has a large amount
of money and products moved through it each day. In the inner city though, it is not as cheap to make the products. There also are not the massive
amounts of laborers that are found in Dharavi. Moving away from product production we can look at the dumps of Dharavi. A large amount of the
trash from the inner city is sent to the slum to be processed. The workers that sort through the trash are called rag pickers. The rag pickers make very
little money for what they do, but the work that they do is very important. They separate the waste into different categories to be processed and
recycled accordingly. They separate the metals from plastics, and

Measurement of Problems
It has been observed that during peak hours, each train is over filled by 3–4 times its seating capacity. And during peak hours on roads, there are
frequent long traffic slowdowns or halts. These busy times are measured as follows: for local trains the percent full per train and for roads the
minimum speed of traffic. This measurement system can be mapped to measure the effect of solving transportation problem on the overall quality of
life of Mumbaikars. By maximizing the suggested measurement specifications, a train can be filled up to 1.4–1.6 times its seating capacity and on
roads, there should not be a complete traffic halt (apart from exceptional circumstances) and traffic movement should maintain a minimum of 25–35
km/h. A solution "fails" if it does not meet these specifications a minimum of 95 percent of the time. For calculating impact on quality of life inMumbai
, it is assumed that transportation problems contribute 15 percent to the overall reduction. If the solution system works within specifications, it
improves a person's quality of life by 15 percent. If the solution fails to

Slumdog Dharavi Research Paper
The Dharavi slums introduce many health risks to those who live there. Health is defined as a human condition measured by four components:
physical, mental, social, and spiritual. Most of the most pressing health risk the slums create are physical. The way the buildings are so tightly
packed together creates a huge fire risk. If one building was to catch fire, it would set off a chain reaction burning down every building it touches.
With the limited resources they have, it would be very difficult to stop the fires. The jobs inDharavi are also very dangerous. Many of the factories and

what is the business model)? Is this business model scalable?
The Dabbawallah meal distribution network is simple logistics service model characterized by a combination of a "baton relay system" in which
dabbas were handed off between dabbawallahs at various points in the delivery process and "hub and spokes system" in which the sorting of dabbas
was done at specific railway locations from where individual spokes branched out for distribution. Each dabba was picked up at the source by one
Dabbawallah for transport to the railway terminal, sorted and loaded by a second dabbawallah, unloaded and re–sorted at the hub or destination station
by a third dabbawallah and delivered by a fourth dabbawallah to the destination.
Each dabba travelling through four sets of hands each day was identified and monitored (while in transit) through a very effective and simple coding
system; without utilizing the client names.
The low cost transportation created high value for the services keeping the bottom line low.
A high commitment and owner ship of the dabbawallah lead to high reliability of the service, which maintained and fetched new customers of the
business. The dabbawallah dealt directly with the customers for delivery helped them for advertising and referrals for expansion of the business. This
didn't require any advertising cost addition to their operations.

In the novel " Village By The Sea " by Anita Desai tells the problem faced in Indian villagers which can be noticed from two characters, Hari and

distinctive and special in a way, as it alternates between the view of Hari and Lila. It also has an effect on the readers, when Hari goes to the city of
Bombay and Lila is in the village of Thul. From these two point of view we can get the idea of similarities and differences between city and village life.

They believe that the Almighty Allah brought a holy water that was healing. Thus the reason that people flooded to the water with the elderly, ill and
their worries. Like most hysterias, people fall into them because they need guidance or feel the need to be apart of something. This was one of the
cases, they did not care if the water was dirty, the sudden change was believed to be miracle, regardless of the scientific facts that were to prove that it
was not. Mass hysteria has occurred through the thread of time and it is something that raises numerous questions about ethics, morals and how people
are thought to be at the time. When you are put into an environment that brings life to your imagination or thought process, you begin to see things that
are rather typical or brought to topic occasionally. Some people don't believe in ghost but when you put them in the "typical" haunted creepy house,
they suddenly see apparitions and such. This brings up a really interesting concept, "Environmental psychologist Peter Suedfeld also thinks that what

  • 9. Capital City Of Maharashtra Abstract: Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra, experienced unprecedented floods on 26th and 27th July 2005 bringing the entire city to standstill for two days. In span of 24 hours the Santa Cruz observatory at Mumbai airport recorded 944 mm of rain, which is highest recorded data for city in a day. The flood caused direct economic damages of about $2 billion and over 500 fatalities. The flood also caused several infrastructural damages, over 2,000 buildings were completely destroyed and 50,000 were partially damaged, around 40,000 auto rickshaws and taxis were spoiled, several thousand trucks and 850 BEST buses were damaged and local train and railway network of the city was also affected. The main cause behind such a huge loss was over population and rapid urbanization. Mumbai, along with its neighbouring suburbs is the world's sixth most populated metropolitan area with the population of around 19 million (MMRDA, 2003). The average population density is 27,209 persons per km2 .Due to the lack of availability of safe land the economically backward people live in slums which are low lying and flood prone. Thus the maximum loss due to the flood was barred by the people living in these low lying slums. The purpose of this research is to calculate the economic loss to the self employed people and the people with micro enterprise living in these slums. Introduction: Climate change, rapid urbanization and limited available land are putting the highly populated cities in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Statement Of Purpose Statement For Mumbai STATEMENT OF PURPOSE ABHIJEET REDEKAR It was Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who said in October 2004: "When we talk of a resurgent Asia, people think of the great changes that have come about in Shanghai. I share this aspiration to transform Mumbai in the next five years in such a manner that people would forget about Shanghai and Mumbai will become a talking point," the prime minister said. "I have a dream that we can do it. I believe we can become number one through modernization, expansion and development and make Mumbai the number one city in our country," Fast forward 11 years later to 2015 and here we are, Mumbai is in no way an approximation of what Shanghai is today. Pollution, encroachment, traffic congestion and unplanned urbanization have taken their toll on India's commercial capital. It's not a complete failure though as Mumbai has got a new 8.8 km stretch of monorail track, the new T2 terminal of the Mumbai International Airport, the Sahar Elevated Road, the first line of the Mumbai Metro's first phase and the 6.54 km Santacruz–Chembur Link Road. This quote perfectly sums up how I would like to say my culture defines me. Culture is a set of ethics or beliefs, that a certain group follows, and shares. Well, that's at least how I would define it. Culture plays a major role in our lives. Growing up, moving from country to country every 3 years was a regular thing for me. This I would say is an ongoing development. As I've said multiple times, living in different places and experiencing different cultures has really defined me as a person in today's society. "A nation's culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of it's people." A quote from Gandhi that I mentioned earlier. • 18. The Socio-Cultural Analysis Of India The Socio–Cultural Analysis of India Culture is defined as "The arts, beliefs, customs, institutions, and other products of human work and thought considered as a unit, especially with regard to a particular time or social group" by American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (2011). Also, the Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms (2005) defines culture as "A feature of the terrain that has been constructed by man. Included are such items as roads, buildings, and canals; boundary lines; and, in a broad sense, all names and legends on a map". In a nutshell, culture is everything that makes up the basic ways of life. Culture is comprised of five basic characteristics. Culture is learned, shared, symbolic, integrated, and dynamic (Bueno, 2012). This means that aspects of culture are spread by social interactions such as trade, language and other communication technologies. Some of the more common forms of communication technologies and language are movies, television shows, literature, arts, and local history. Symbolism is similar to the learned and shared aspects in many ways. Language, literature, and the arts are all major ways in which the symbolism of a specific culture is spread. The integration of culture is based on pattern. The specific dimensions of social life create social norms that are followed. The economy and politics are two of the more prevalent forms of social life that lead to the patterns of integration. Lastly, there is a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Behind the Beautiful Forevers Essay Brett Potter HST 104 Section 002 Yixin Chen 27 November 2012 The Poverty of Annawadi as seen in Behind the Beautiful Forevers The city of Mumbai has seen much growth in the past years. A string of elegant hotels have been set up for travelers and high–class business men. An ever growing, top of the line airport has been built for those coming in and out of the country. From the outside, Mumbai seems to have taken a liking to being internationally integrated with the rest of world, otherwise known as globalization. This can be seen in the novel with Abdul's father, who suffers from tuberculosis. Diseases like tuberculosis are common in the streets of Annawadi and numerous slums just like it. This makes it hard for Abdul's father to work which means he can not make money to support his family. This is a common problem in many slums for many families who have members suffering from disease. Another problem is the upper class that dwells within Mumbai. While the upper class is the minority class in Mumbai, they control close to all of Mumbai's profits saving it all for themselves and not helping those in need. The fact that such a small percentage of Mumbai's inhabitants controls a large percentage of its wealth is major reason why so many poverty stricken people were forced to live in slums like Annawadi. A third reason for the poverty of Annawadi can be seen in its slum lords. The slums lords have total control over a slum and its inhabitants. If a person crosses paths with a slum lord, they are as good as dead. This fear of the power of slum lords keeps the people down and makes it almost impossible to rise out of poverty. In Behind the Beautiful Forevers, Katherine Boo writes "A decent life was the train that hadn't hit you, the slumlord you hadn't offended, the malaria you hadn't caught" (Page 45). These are all factors in why Annawadi faced such severe poverty. It is easy to say that these all had an effect on Annawadi's absence ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

From the outside, Mumbai seems to enjoy being internationally integrated with the rest of world, otherwise known as globalization. However, this is not the case as seen in Katherine Boo's novel Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity. This novel is set in a slum right next to the Mumbai International Airport called Annawadi. It focuses mainly on the life and story of the main character, Abdul. Abdul Husain and his family make a living by selling scrap metal tossed out by the upper class of Mumbai. When looking at Abdul's story, one can see the corruption that made it near impossible for globalization to have a positive effect on Annawadi. Abdul's relationship with his neighbor, one–legged Fatima, also shows how neighborhood relationships were a barrier to Annawadi's ability to be a part of Mumbai's globalization. Before examining the reasons for Annawadi's lack of effects from globalization, one must look at some of the reasons as to why Annawadi faces the shocking amount of poverty that it does. In the novel, Boo writes, "What you don't want is always going to be with you. What you want is never going to be with you. Where you don't want to go, you have to go. Mumbai also known as Bombay is one of the largest cities in the world with a vast population of 18.4 million people inhabiting it. Mumbai is the richest city in India and houses the most billionaires and millionaires across the entirety of India, which is surprising due to there being approximately 700,000 to 1,000,000 living in Dharavi which is the biggest slum currently in Mumbai. 2.) Dharavi is the main slum in Mumbai It is approximately 216 hectares or 2.16 square kilometres that makes it the second largest slum in Asia and the third largest slum in the world. Dharavi is easily one of the most densely populated places in the world. Recycling is becoming a very large industry in Dharavi due to the amount of trash produced by Mumbai as a city ,there are approximately 250,000 citizens of Dharavi working to recycle the trash of Mumbai. One of Dharavi's biggest problem is sanitation or cleanliness this is because of the disease spread across Dharavi .Dharavi exports a variety of different around the world including leathers jewellery and a wide range of accessories. These goods are mainly exported to Europe the United States and the Middle East, The estimated turnover is $500 million US to $650 million US. 3.) • 33. My Thoughts About My Fieldwork Experience Essay Ray Le Blond has been able to consolidate my thoughts about my fieldwork experience appropriately, thus, "You learn something every day if you pay attention". I was going to Kachra Vahatuk Shramik Sangh (KVSS), Thane as part of my fieldwork on contract labours working in Thane Municipal Corporation in Solid Waste Management Department for the second semester. Little did I know that going among the contract labours and learning about them would inspire, educate and transform me. When I was initially informed that as part of my research methodology course I would be expected to engage in field work I was equally atingled as I was timorous. Even though I had been involved in a couple of internships after my graduation, I knew this was going to be disparate. After all, this was Tata Institute of Social Sciences where everything from the DH menu to the pet dogs on campus are treated with sobriety; field work being a prerequisite would be no different. In the first week of my field work I learned that the most dominant forms of precarious work in India are contract work especially workers working in solid waste management department of municipal corporations, when workers are employed by a contractor who pays the worker their wages, and fix a direct fixed–term contracts. The term of a direct fixed–term contract can be as short as a single day. These short–term contracts are commonly known as 'hire and fire' contracts, as workers are under the constant threat of losing their job ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. A Brief Note On The City Of Mumbai The city of Mumbai is the largest city in India, with a population of roughly 19.3 million people (World Population Review, 2014). One reason that Mumbai has grown to such extent is its convenient location. Located on a peninsula off the west coast of India and boarding the Arabian Sea, Mumbai has easy travel access to the Middle East and inland India (Earth Explorer, 2015). The Mithi River flows through the heart of the city and connects into Mahim Bay, which provides further transportation capabilities for those in the area (2015). Both Powai and Vihar Lake are located further inland and provide drinking water for the people of Mumbai ("Mumbai", 2014). North of Vihar Lake is Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the world's largest national park, which is a preservation of forest area that covers 104 square kilometers (Mehta, 2013). This national park is not only rich in resources and biodiversity; it also is a popular tourist area that has about 2 million annual visitors (2013). In addition to the thousands of plant and animal species that live in this forest area, such animals in preservations include panthers, antelope, moose deer, wild bears, monkeys, leopards, tigers, etc. Mumbai has a tropical wet and dry climate that does not fluctuate much throughout the year (Pacione, 2006). Average temperatures typically range between 60–100В°F year round (2006). From January through May and October through December, Mumbai experiences dry weather with little rain. • 35. The Real Slumdog 's Documentary a. Globalization/pg. 29: The growing interconnections among nations due to the expansion of capitalism The Real Slumdog's documentary was very interesting and eye opening. The amount of businesses that are run in the one square mile area of Dharavi affect the entire capitalism of the world. Look at it this way, the Slumdog's as they're called make crappy money to make some very intricate products. These products will be shipped from Mumbai to the rest of the world eventually. As the products are marked up by middle men, the money does not filter its way back to the Dharavi slum. Thus, the products might be ten dollars in a store, but initially the slum workers get paid barely anything and do not get to see the profit that they could. These people work to survive. Mumbai is a very intricate and bustling city, and has a large amount of money and products moved through it each day. In the inner city though, it is not as cheap to make the products. There also are not the massive amounts of laborers that are found in Dharavi. Moving away from product production we can look at the dumps of Dharavi. A large amount of the trash from the inner city is sent to the slum to be processed. The workers that sort through the trash are called rag pickers. The rag pickers make very little money for what they do, but the work that they do is very important. They separate the waste into different categories to be processed and recycled accordingly. They separate the metals from plastics, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

And during peak hours on roads, there are frequent long traffic slowdowns or halts. These busy times are measured as follows: for local trains the percent full per train and for roads the minimum speed of traffic. This measurement system can be mapped to measure the effect of solving transportation problem on the overall quality of life of Mumbaikars. By maximizing the suggested measurement specifications, a train can be filled up to 1.4–1.6 times its seating capacity and on roads, there should not be a complete traffic halt (apart from exceptional circumstances) and traffic movement should maintain a minimum of 25–35 km/h. Health is defined as a human condition measured by four components: physical, mental, social, and spiritual. Most of the most pressing health risk the slums create are physical. The way the buildings are so tightly packed together creates a huge fire risk. If one building was to catch fire, it would set off a chain reaction burning down every building it touches. With the limited resources they have, it would be very difficult to stop the fires. The jobs inDharavi are also very dangerous. With the migration of masses from rural to urban ares cities are overcrowded and vulnerability and exposure aspects accruing it are in the state of change.
