Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra, experienced unprecedented floods on 26th and 27th July 2005 bringing the entire city to standstill for two
days. In span of 24 hours the Santa Cruz observatory at Mumbai airport recorded 944 mm of rain, which is highest recorded data for city in a day. The
flood caused direct economic damages of about $2 billion and over 500 fatalities. The flood also caused several infrastructural damages, over 2,000
buildings were completely destroyed and 50,000 were partially damaged, around 40,000 auto rickshaws and taxis were spoiled, several thousand
trucks and 850 BEST buses were damaged and local train and railway network of the city was also affected. The main cause behind such a huge loss
was over population and rapid urbanization. Mumbai, along with its neighbouring suburbs is the world's sixth most populated metropolitan area

My Thoughts About My Fieldwork Experience Essay
Ray Le Blond has been able to consolidate my thoughts about my fieldwork experience appropriately, thus, "You learn something every day if you
pay attention". I was going to Kachra Vahatuk Shramik Sangh (KVSS), Thane as part of my fieldwork on contract labours working in Thane
Municipal Corporation in Solid Waste Management Department for the second semester. Little did I know that going among the contract labours
and learning about them would inspire, educate and transform me. When I was initially informed that as part of my research methodology course
I would be expected to engage in field work I was equally atingled as I was timorous. Even though I had been involved in a couple of internships
after my graduation, I knew this was going to be disparate. After all, this was Tata Institute of Social Sciences where everything from the DH menu
to the pet dogs on campus are treated with sobriety; field work being a prerequisite would be no different. In the first week of my field work I
learned that the most dominant forms of precarious work in India are contract work especially workers working in solid waste management
department of municipal corporations, when workers are employed by a contractor who pays the worker their wages, and fix a direct fixed–term
contracts. The term of a direct fixed–term contract can be as short as a single day. These short–term contracts are commonly known as 'hire and fire'
contracts, as workers are under the constant threat of losing their job

Mumbai has grown to such extent is its convenient location. Located on a peninsula off the west coast of India and boarding the Arabian Sea,

The Dabbawallah meal distribution network is simple logistics service model characterized by a combination of a "baton relay system" in which
dabbas were handed off between dabbawallahs at various points in the delivery process and "hub and spokes system" in which the sorting of dabbas
was done at specific railway locations from where individual spokes branched out for distribution. Each dabba was picked up at the source by one
Dabbawallah for transport to the railway terminal, sorted and loaded by a second dabbawallah, unloaded and re–sorted at the hub or destination station
by a third dabbawallah and delivered by a fourth dabbawallah to the destination.
Each dabba travelling through four sets of hands each day was identified and monitored (while in transit) through a very effective and simple coding
system; without utilizing the client names.
The low cost transportation created high value for the services keeping the bottom line low.

A high commitment and owner ship of the dabbawallah lead to high reliability of the service, which maintained and fetched new customers of the
business. The dabbawallah dealt directly with the customers for delivery helped them for advertising and referrals for expansion of the business. This
didn't require any advertising cost addition to their operations.
