Introduction :
Transportation has changed drastically in the past several hundred years and here in
India we’ve experienced a variety of ways to get from point A to point B. 200 years
ago, the most practical way to travel was through our nation’s local rides which is
why so many settlements were tied to the nation’s villages. Fast forward 100 years
later and we were riding the railroads along thousands of miles of track and large
ships transported passengers and freight across the oceans. The twentieth century
brought us trolley lines and, of course, mass production and the automobile, which
changed everything.
6
Ancient
transportation :
7
what were the primary reasons for which the people
traveled in Ancient India?
People moved locations to get better
places to stay or to access better
resources,Another reason was the Basic
human tendency of aggression, war, and
fighting which was even stronger in the
Ancient age, Another reason for travel
was Tirthyatras. People traveled to visit
the Tirthas. It has a very complex and
multifaceted meaning. One meaning of
course is a place of religious importance
and another reason for which the
people traveled in ancient was to gain
knowledge.
8
Did they have roads like we have expressways, highways, etc?
What kind of vehicles they had? How did they travel?
We did not start with the roads. Roads
came to us later in time. Remember, water
was always there. So, Waterways have
come before roadways because human
beings discovered how to make boats
much before. Some inscription of Indus
valley civilization tells us types of boats
and how they were made. So, waterways
with the infrastructure of ships, navigators,
navigating instruments, etc. have all been
mentioned not only in Rigveda but also in
Jatak Katha.

Transportation, the
movement of humans,
animals and goods from
place to place and the
various means by which
such movement is
accomplished.
it enables communication,
trade and other forms of
exchange between
people, that in turn
establishes civilizations.
It plays an important
role in management of
supply chain.
Plays an important
part in economic
growth and
globalization, but most
types cause air
pollution and use large
amounts of land.

transportation plays
very important role in
the supply chain to
distribute the goods
from one place to
another place or we
can say that to the
customers

How has the improper facility of
transportation affected the areas and
its consequences :
16

Less availability of
food as it take more
time to transport
Packages don’t

Places facing scarcity of transportation facilities . . .
18
Today in our day to day life transportation has
become our basic requirement …
From going to school in a bus to flying to
another planet ... need of transportation has
always tickle our requirements
We live in a city that has perfect composition
of transportation, but what is it that you can
see in this image? Yet many of the people in
mumbai travel in large masses and
sometimes miss the train . . .
. . . while places which do not
19
Hey!!! What about a free idea for free
transportation? No need to buy tickets for
buses, taxis, and trains!!! Isn’t it cool ?
I know you think that it is not possible in any
country as that country would go to loss!!!
Whoa!
Don’t worry we are here with a country having
free public transportation including trains,
trams, buses, and much more…
Luxembourg, although being one of the
smallest European countries has decided to
provide free transportation to the public !!!
The politics of transport
20
So here we are with politics of
transport … i am sure that you guys
have not come up with this term
and no need to worry, as this term
has almost never discussed by
experts too!!! Its presence is quite
unfamiliar but yet strange…
"Transport Politics" is the study of the process of
efforts (struggles) in the competition areas of the
various power interests (authorities) associated
with the management of transportation in order to
be integrated into a single authority (policy
makers) in case of organizing the wider interest of
the people (National Interest); that is to open
opportunity to access to economic and national
development as well as creating the
transportation services that are safe, convenient,
fast, and timely…
21
22
Now let’s study an important element
of transportation - THATS
INFRASTRUCTURE !!!
Transport infrastructure consists of
the fixed installations including roads,
railways, airways, waterways, canals
and pipelines and terminals such as
airports, railway stations, bus stations,
warehouses, trucking terminals, ETC.
Transportation infrastructure
23
Future Trends of
Transport Industry :
Modern transportation is
currently experiencing major
changes in order to fulfill our
needs … let’s take a look at 2
such examples
24
1) Self driving automobiles :
25
You all have definitely heard about self
driving automobile!!! Self-driving
automobiles are already here. They’re still
undergoing the earliest stages of
development and testing, but they’re
already present on our nation’s roadways
These cars would save our time so that we
can invest our most valuable time in a
correct way...
26
2) Smart cars :
27
Many consumers already own
smart vehicles. The exact definition
of a smart car varies between
manufacturers, dealers and
individuals, but it generally
describes a compact, fuel-efficient
vehicle that utilizes new and
innovative technology to make life
easier for the driver and
passengers.
BIG CONCEPT
Principles of
Transportation
28
29
Scale Distance
Economy of
There are 2 fundamental economic principles of that
impact transportation efficiency :
Economy of scale
Is the cost per unit weight.
Decreases as the size of
shipment increases
E.g ; large capacity
transportation vehicle such as
rail or water are less
expensive per unit of weight
than smaller capacity vehicles
such as trucks or air...
30
31
Economy of Distance
Refers to decreased
transportation cost per unit
of weight as distance
increases.
E.g : a shipment of 800 km
will cost less to perform than
2 shipments of the same
weight each moving 400 km
…
What steps has the government planned in order to
improve these facilities?
32
As an alternative, the
government has
planned ambitious metro
rail projects for Delhi and
other metropolitan cities.
National Urban
Transport Policy-2006.
More than 22,500 buses
sanctioned to 157
cities/cluster of cities
under erstwhile
JnNURM Scheme
More than 1000 city
officials have been
trained from all over
India on Urban Transport
issues.
33
Ministry has also
provided financial
assistance for Bus Rapid
Transit System (BRTS)
for 12 cities.
Urban Transport
component such as BRT,
Buses, Footpaths, Cycles
etc have been made
important component of
AMRUT scheme of the
Ministry.
Evolution of transport
in India
Everything has an evolution.
Just like we humans have
crossed a long distance …
But what about evolution of
transport? In india? How had
this idea of facility come?
What were its successful
stages? Let try to answer
these questions.
34
Transportation always plays an important role in Indian
Economy . . . this was because of the efforts of
successive governments of Congress that india was able
to develop a strong network of road, railways, Aviation
and water transport

Ways to improve city
transport
40
Bus frequency
Efficient bus ticketing system
Passenger
Comfort
Reduce greenhouse gases
42
The wait becomes part of the
transportation cycle. Even if the bus is
lightning fast, in the mind of the rider, the
trip begins right when they arrive at the
curb and start waiting for the bus to pick
them up
Bus frequency
Efficient bus ticketing
system
A big part of how to improve
transportation efficiency is improving
transit ticketing systems. Ticketing
systems have to be quick and practical to
allow for prompt loading and unloading
of passengers.
Passenger Comfort
Riders want comfortable buses that can
seat as many people as possible.
Face-to-face seating is not appealing and
being knee-to-knee in a confined space
creates awkward moments between
strangers.
43
Exhaust spewing buses are an ongoing
concern. One of the significant factors that
commuters consider when deciding to
take public transit is the environmental
impact of their alternative
transportation method.
Reduce Greenhouse Gases
Transportation
investment
Transportation investment is
chosen by politicians facing
electoral incentives. We model
policy-making as the outcome of
an electoral process with binding
platform commitments but
imperfectly and
heterogeneously informed
voters, following Ponzetto (2011)
and Glaeser and Ponzetto (2014).

Imagine a drive in your city in rainy
season, remember the uneven road
which has a heated discussion on new
channels !!! At some place roads are
the best while when we look at some
cities the situation is worse …
46
Today people find
strange but excellent
solutions for few
problems like parking :
47
48
49
● In 1900, Americans owned 8,000 cars, in 1920, they owned 8 million,
and in the year 2000, there were more than 220 million – more than
one car for every person over the age of 18.
● 40% of the world’s freight is transported via trains and that number
continues to grow each year.
● Biodiesel was invented in the 1890s by Rudolph Diesel, when he
created the diesel engine that could run on a variety of fuels including
peanut oil.
Amazing facts that you need to be aware of
50
Development So Far :
51
Roads:
Railways :
The Indian Railway is the world‘s largest government railway.
Rail density in India is the third highest in Asia after Japan and
South Korea. Indian Railways is among the world's largest rail
network, and its route length network is spread over 1,23,236
kms, with 13,523 passenger trains and 9,146 freight trains, plying
23 million travellers and 3 million tonnes of freight daily from
7,349 stations.
52
Goods transported by Indian
railways are the second highest in
Asia after China. Similarly, number
of passengers carried by Indian
railways is also on par with China
indicating that railways are an
important source of transportation
to the majority of populations.
53
62,000,000
Whoa! That’s a big number,
aren’t you proud?

TRANSJAKARTA
Transjakarta is a bus rapid transit [BRT] system in Jakarta
,Indonesia . The first BRT system in Southeast Asia , it
commenced operations on 15 January 2004 to provide a fast
public transport system to help reduce rush hour traffic . The
system is considered as the first revolutionary public transit
mode in the capital city of Indonesia . The buses run in
dedicated lanes , and ticket prices are subsidised by the
regional government . the government has the world’s longest
BRT system [251.2 m in length ] ,which operates about 3,900
buses
