Pirates Of The Caribbe On Stranger Tides
Hollywood today spends more money on movies than ever before, with an average budget of $140
million per movie. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides; the most expensive movie ever
made; cost approximately $378.5 million and that was five years ago. This isn't surprising since
history is witness to a rising trend in money spent on movies, even after adjusting for inflation,
however, their impact on the industry isn't as large as their budgets. Over the years, lower cost
productions like B–Movies have played a major role in carrying the industry forward by keeping it
stable, moving and profitable in times of trouble. B–Movies came to be the need of the hour after
The Great Depression and World War II. Money was tight everywhere and Hollywood could not

movies not only have an economical significance in Hollywood, they have made more than one

origins of B–Movies are humble but over the years that they grew in Hollywood, they became more

Some competitive forces have challenged the movie industry such as – Treats of new entrants
Substitute Products or services Increasing bargaining power of customers Increasing bargaining
power of suppliers Rivalry among existing competitors
Those are the major forces that have challenged these industry and these forces have made it more

➢ Major movie studios reached agreements with sites such as cinema Now and Movielink which
has since been acquired by Blockbuster, to sell movies online via download. ➢ These distributed
promotional video clips of all new films to web sites such as YouTube. ➢ At the first time, the price
of movies via download was minimum or small to get the support of customers to maintain low cost
leadership.
2. Describe the impact of disruptive technology on the companies discussed in this case.
The impact of disruptive technology has changed the way of doing business of the companies that
are discussed in this case.
NBC Universal, Time Warner's Warner Brothers entertainment and News Corporation's Twentieth
Century Fox have faced a serious problem because of YouTube. Most of their content is submitted
to YouTube without the studios' permission that ranges from 30 to 70 percent. It is claimed that over
15000 unauthorized clips of its copyrighted Television programs had appeared on YouTube that the
media faces damages around $1 billion from YouTube.
To avoid these facts, more companies sought some constructive solutions. They entered into
negotiations with YouTube to established licensing agreements that would make

The term impersonator is considered somewhat demeaning in the acting world, suggesting that the
actor has simply copied the manner, dialect, and behavior of a character, instead of creating the
character. There are times when such a skill is useful–when a filmmaker needs a portrayal of a
recognizable historical figure, for instance, but doesn't want to distract the audience by casting a
recognizable actor in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though he can be considered a personality actor, no one would argue that Nicholson, who has
been nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won three, is a brilliant actor. And actors like
Humphrey Bogart and Cary Grant remain popular personalities more than half a century after their
heyday. But a lesser talent who relies too much on personality risks staying power. Will audiences
50 years from now recognize the strength of personality? Or will it simply seemed mannered and
curious, a distraction instead of a beloved trait?
Stars
To define a star, think about a personality actor, only more so. A star is a distinctive screen persona,
who is well–known and popular with the moviegoing public, often to the point that some avid movie
fans become deeply curious about the actor's private life Hollywood has a long love affair with stars,
since the days of Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford. Stars are actors who are simply famous on–
screen and off, personalities so magnetic that we are interested not just in their movies but in their
personal lives as well. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are both talented actors. But they're also famous
stars, so much so that tabloids and gossip sites endlessly speculate on their relationship, their
children, and every other aspect of their lives. Obviously this has been taken to almost absurd
extremes today, where Web sites breathlessly report the content of text messages between actors and
their mistresses

My Post-High School Life
While walking through the electric sliding doors, I smelled disinfectant wipes and saw a plethora of
dark blue scrubs, white lab coats, and street clothing. I entered an elevator to my right. Once I got to
the third floor, I made a sharp left and saw the patient transport room containing several other young
people all wearing the same blue polo shirt. I was home. For my graduation project, I volunteered at
three different hospitals: Paoli Hospital, Bryn Mawr Hospital, and St. Christopher's Hospital for
Children. After accumulating almost two–hundred hours in various hospital environments, I have
made important decisions that will affect my post–high school life. I started volunteering at the Paoli
Hospital after my grandfather passed away at the end of ninth grade. While ... Show more content on

Aside from the techniques, skills, and rules I have learned from my experiences, I have also learned
how to handle the emotional side of healthcare. Being in a hospital can be a very sad place. In
essence, it is a place where society's sick go for help. After witnessing various traumatic
experiences, I have been able to see these people get their lives back and overcome the illnesses. It
is these stories that light my fire to continue the path in the healthcare field. I believe I did very well
in the mock interview because I was able to get across my passion for healthcare to my interviewer.
From the project, I volunteered at three difference hospitals and eventually was accepted into a
medical program at a fourth hospital. One thing to take away from my project is to just appreciate
your good health. Most people at school take for granted their healthy bodies, but every week I am
surrounded by patients who are fighting for their lives. It has actually inspired me to live a more
active and healthy lifestyle. The experiences from the graduation project will help lead to a very

The Current Rating System in the United States Essay
English 122
12–1–11
The Current Rating System in the United States
The current content rating system in use for film, the MPAA, is the only content rating system that is
legally enforced in the United States. For this reason, the system has caused controversy. Many have
claimed that the system is unbalanced, as the MPAA bases the level of appropriate content for all
people in the United States off of the opinions of an unidentified council of people over the age of
forty (Jenkins). The stance on how the system's effectiveness is a relative stance, however, the
secondhand effects of the system are obvious and existing today. Decisions have been made by film
distribution companies that have affected the way films with objectionable ... Show more content on

This type of butterfly effect that the rating system has on films is evident: the attempt to block off
certain age limits to harsh types of content has ultimately put pressure on artists to limit types of
ways to tell a story in mainstream film. In the interview with filmmaker Kirby Dick on this subject,
the interviewer asks him about the topic of sexuality in film, MPAA's stance on sexuality, and how
Dick represented these ideas presented in his film. Dick stated,
Allison Anders makes the very interesting point that in some ways the ratings system is more
restrictive of sexuality now than it was in the Sixties and Seventies. I think there are a number of
reasons. Perhaps to some degree society has shifted slightly. Film studios were making some money
from films that were more sexually provocative, like Midnight Cowboy. But, then again, you have
to realize that the studios benefit from the system's coming down hard on films, especially on
independent films about adult sexuality. To begin with, who makes those films? Independents and
foreign filmmakers make those films, and that's the studios' competition. So they restrict it. It's not
much competition, but it does make a difference. Jt also makes it appear like the Rating Jioard is
doing its job as censors, as raters, doing their job," and doesn't pay attention to the fact that all these
films about violence are slipping through unencumbered by a rating. And the studio filmmakers are

Campus Theatre Event Analysis
Looking for a place to view the Academy Awards? Look no further than the Campus Theatre.
Located in Lewisburg, the non–profit started hosting this event back in 2008. "The Campus Theatre
has been a functioning movie house for 75 years." Jessica Paquin, director of outreach and
fundraising states. "The Academy Awards® is a celebration of the recognition of great cinema. It
was a natural fit to tie the two together." She states.
The event is the biggest fundraiser of the year. Since the Campus Theatre is a non–profit it relies on
events like this as well as support of its members and the community as a whole. "The annual
celebration is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year." Paquin explains. "We hold a silent auction

While the viewing aspect has stayed relatively the same, the actual event format has changed over
the years. "The ceremony itself is on an unfortunate day of the week" Paquin states. :Being on a
Sunday, it is a long ceremony averaging at or over three hours and it usually runs until close to
midnight. That is a tough time slot for many of our patrons with regular 9 to 5 jobs to commit to
attend."
In the past the Campus Theatre has found that many people would come early and stay only for the
first few awards and then leave for the evening. So in previous years, they have changed it up with
the Hollywood Ball on a Saturday and then the Pajama Party to encourage people to be comfortable
and stay to watch (On Sunday). "But this year we're going back to the original idea of the Red
Carpet Gala!" Paquin says with enthusiasm.
But, do people dress up? Yes. "No matter what kind of event we have people love to dress up!"
Paquin states. " The Hollywood Ball in 2013 had people dressing up as their favorite movie stars
and characters. The Gala in 2014 had everyone dressed to the nines and there was even a photo–op
with a life size award statue! At the Red Carpet Pajama Party last year we had everyone dressed in
their most comfortable PJ's to stay up late to see the end of the awards. Our patrons love a great

The Genre Of Cult Film
The area of study to be explored is genre and my investigation will look into ways we are able to
clarify the vast genre of cult film. Speculated by theorists such as Sconce, Jancovich and many
others, cult film is one of the most diverse and ambiguous genres of the past 60 years in motion
picture history. Beginning in the 1950s with unconventional flicks like Plan 9 from Outer Space and
The Blob, cult film as a 'quasi–genre' began to not only reject one set of stylistic conventions, but
also started to expand into various sub–genres that it could 'umbrella'. Highlighted by Sconce in his
study, '[cult film] would include entries from disparate sub–genres such as "bad films"...and just
about every other manifestation of exploitation cinema ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition to this, those who construct and encode ideologies and messages into cult films need to
know and implement a repertoire of elements that will go against the pleasures of recognition and
provide a more sophisticated and untraditional narrative experience. Whether through manipulating
time and space, or providing powerful subject matter, it is through these technical and visual codes
that the text will continuously challenge audience expectation and draw a preferred or oppositional
reading to the weird and wonderful it tries to represent. As argued by Thornton, 'it is not defined
according to some single, unifying feature shared by all cult movies, but rather through a 'sub–
cultural ideology' in filmmakers, films or audiences are seen as existing in opposition to the
mainstream.' Therefore, the audience appeal for cult film is not only through its quirky and
abnormal generic values, but also through the plurality of artistic control that is held by the auteur
and its audience's desires. In order to go into more extensive detail, I have selected Nicolas Winding
Refn's Drive and David Fincher's Fight Club – two contrasting texts with diverse ideologies and
technical codes yet both linked by

Movie Analysis : ' Midnight, My Brother Randy Hunches '
At midnight, my brother Randy hunches over in a metal chair and taps his keyboard repetitively. He
wraps a blanket around himself, inserts his earphones, and sits mostly in the darkness. Only a
computer screen shines a light on his face. He usually has none of his homework finished when that
light is on, but perhaps he plays for that reason – to distract, to hide, to avoid.
Peeking over his shoulder, I sometimes try to join him, not in the hiding, just in the disappearing.
But he no longer needs – or wants – me to play with him as we did years ago on a silver Game Boy
Advance. On it, I would be his eyes and his fingers. I read the words he did not know and used my
more nimble, less chubby fingers to control our avatar's movements. ... Show more content on

As I gazed at the display case, I knew Randy had found me in the video game aisle, and his eyes had
already veered to that same box on the bottom shelf. And I knew he would have the blue Game Boy,
and I would have to get one from the heaps of silver Game Boys. Blue, my parents said, was for
boys, and I needed to stop making Randy upset. A part of me felt resentful, angered, frustrated for
this parrot who mimicked my words but barely squawked on his own.
At "my" party the next week, I knowingly turned over the silver Game Boy in my hands. The five
buttons just seemed a little more awkward, the surface a little more dull, and the flipped up screen a
little more stiff when I saw my brother's gleaming, slick device. Envy boiled inside. What did he do
differently? What did he do better than I? Although I had known for years already, the reminder that
my birthday was also Randy's – when his actual day of birth was four months away – made me
seethe in anger.
My reaction to his Game Boy may seem irrational – fussing over some silly color and blaming a
child for it all. But I was a child, too. And my parents had forgotten that. From the time I was six, I
was writing out their checks, filling out their paperwork before doctor appointments, and reading the
manual to set up the Game Boy and every other device in our house. My childhood had disappeared.
Being an older sister, I told myself, meant consistently compromising for my little brother. It meant

Humor in The Simpsons Essay
Humor in The Simpsons I and many other millions of people across the world believe that The
Simpson's is the best programme on television because it is funny in more ways then one. The
Simpson's uses the family lifestyle that many American TV shows have used over past (e.g. The
Adam's family, The Flintstones) but The Simpson's has proved it is a lot more popular because it
uses many more different forms of comedy which work with people from all ages. Slapstick comedy
is where someone gets hurt and you laugh but if you saw it happen in real life you'd find it sick for
example when homer the father strangles his son Bart in many episodes it would be seen as child
abuse in real life but you ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Where Bart, Lisa and their classmates get stranded on an island and they go through the same things
as they did in the book or film. Another great example is where Bart writes " I can't see dead people"
on the board in the opening credits which is a parody of The sixth sense which is a supernatural film
about ghosts and there is a memorable quote where the young boy says "I see dead people". Another
example of Intertextuality is where they use the idea of the matrix, which is a sci–fi film where the
actors dodge bullets and move in slow motion. And in the Simpson's Bart starts running up walls
and dodging bullets and moving in slow motion and is quite enjoyable to watch because its good
seeing the Simpson's doing it. Intertextuality is a sophisticated type of comedy because the older
viewers are more likely to grasp examples of these then younger viewers. Running gags are things
you will probably see in every episode and are funny every time you see them. Running gags are
jokes that are same jokes and actions that reappear every now and again. For example Homer
always strangles his son Bart whenever he's rude or annoys Homer usually by outsmarting him.
Another running gag which I find funny is whenever the Simpson's are watching a documentary or a
film the same actor Troy McClure

Finding A Move Starring An Actor
Throughout my life, my family and I have always been really close. We spend time together and just
generally like one another. There are no things that come up as a tradition or practice we regularly
perform, but one thing that is almost an unspoken tradition is the way I spend time and connect with
my dad. Sitting down on a rainy day or just the odd night to watch a movie together is a regular
activity that my dad, my brother, my friends, and I do. Some may say that watching movies is just a
few people sitting on a couch not interacting or connecting in and way. But it just isn't. Finding a
move starring an actor, directed by a director or in a genre we both like is an exciting process that is
rewarded with 1.5 – 2.5 hours of suspense, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As soon as my brother told me about this special premier and that he was going with his friends, I
was ecstatic. Without thinking, I quickly texted two of my friends who also like these movies,
telling them we need to go. I then thought for a few minutes and realized that I needed to ask my
mom first if I could go. I started writing out a text, but I just didn't think words on a screen could do
enough convincing. So, I went into my contacts and dialed my mom's number. I could feel my
anxiety building with thoughts of, "What if she says no?", "If she says no, then what am I supposed
to tell my friends?" I kept thinking of these worst case scenarios and the phone kept ringing.
Devastated, I heard the computerized voice break through the monotonous dial tone: "We're sorry,
but the numb–. " I hung up before the automated voice mail could condemn me to my fate of no
answer. After trying the number two or three times, I decided to give it one last go. Dialing the
number, the ringing started. Once, twice, three times it rang before I secured an answer. With her
answering, I conquered one of the steps to seeing a long–awaited movie of mine. "Mom?" I said in
to my phone. "What do you need? I'm in a meeting." She replied with a mixture of agitation and
worry. "Oh... nothing." I quickly hung up the phone knowing that if I asked now, it would be a
definite no. I then decided to

You would be hard pressed to find a disappointing giallo. Most of them are able to offer something
exciting. It could either be stunning women, blood or beautiful sets filled with colour. The greats
like Argento and Bava know how to insert all that into a film – Blood and Black Lace from Mario
Bava springs instantly to mind. All of this brings me to a director I wasn't aware of until Arrow

to be purchased prior to films being made. Arundel wants to come up with a decision to either
purchase all the sequel rights for a studio's entire production during a specified period of time or

In addition, once production started, the studio would inevitably form an opinion about the movie
and the likeliness that a sequel would be possible. This would put Arundel at a disadvantage,
because they would then have to negotiate the price for sequel rights on each film produced, while
knowing much less than the production studio about the film. What are primary advantages and
disadvantages of the approach that was taken by us in valuing the sequel rights? Our analysis of
Arundel's proposal includes a net present value calculation of each movie production company.
Arundel feels that waiting to purchase sequel rights until after the movie goes into production will
make it more difficult and costly to purchase the rights. Below are advantages and disadvantages of
our approach. ADVANTAGES: – Simplicity

Logan: A Stand–Out Superhero Movie
In the past few years, the superhero genre has risen into the movie industry. This year alone, six
superhero movies were released. The superhero genre is popular among young adults. While big
studios like Marvel and DC are competing for audiences, many overlook Fox studio, which has been
making critically acclaimed superhero movies like the X–Men way before the surge of the genre.
The competition between studios create an oversaturation making it hard for films like Logan to
stand, but it does this and more. Logan not only transcends the superhero genre but also turns the
superhero format on its head. Logan incorporates elements found in the drama, road trip, and
western genre and emphasizes emotion over action. Set in a post–apocalyptic future, Logon tells the
story of a broken down Wolverine in his older years, taking care of Charles. Despite his reluctance
to engage in any more conflicts, he is forced to escort Laura, a young girl, to safety. Although Logan
may be criticized for its one–dimensional villains and overdone story, director James Mangold,
successfully crafted an excellent film that separates itself from the genre through realistic characters
and a simplistic plot.
Most of the time, Logan centralizes on its main characters, so it is understandable that other
characters are not as fleshed out. The villains came off as uninteresting and forgettable. Boyd

Scarlet Letter : Revenge And Revenge
What would you do for revenge? Would you seek it out till the end, or let karma handle fate? The
vengeful, and sickening Chillingworth from Hawthorne' Scarlet Letter, let revenge consume him, a
character that shows this same character flaw, is Tom the cat, from Tom and Jerry. Tom is a very
curious, and mischievous cat, whose only daily routine is to torment the innocent little mouse, Jerry.
These two characters have three distinct resemblances, both spend most their lives seeking revenge
on their fellow characters, both only end up hurting themselves as a result of this revenge, and both
do not fulfil the desire to gain revenge, and end up with an unsatisfactory ending.
These seemingly cynical characters are similar because they both crave the same thing in life,
revenge. Chillingworth is consumed by the hope of psychologically torturing Dimmesdale. One
example of this is when Chillingworth brings home some herbs, "I found them growing on a grave,
which bore no tombstone, or other memorial of the Deadman, save these ugly weeds that have taken
upon themselves to keep him in remembrance. They grew out of his heart, and typify, it may be,
some hideous secret that was buried with him, and which he had done better to confess during his
lifetime" (pg. 108). After this con, Dimmesdale became consumed with guilt to the point of
punishing himself by starving, and whipping himself. Whereas Tom spends most of his days chasing

Miracle At Midnight Movie Vs Book
In the book Number the Stars, the author Lois Lowry tells a fictional story about a girl who lives in
Denmark at the time of World War II, named Annemarie. The movie Miracle at Midnight, lightly
based on Number the Stars, is very different. The characters in Miracle at Midnight are Elsa, Henrik,
Mrs. Coster, and Mr. Coster. They live in the time of World War II. One day, the rabbi of a church
warns the Jewish people that the Germans are coming to take them away. All of them try to hide
except for those who don't believe the rabbi. Mr. Coster and Henrik help to hide many Jews. Only
202 Jewish people are relocated out of 7,500. In the end, Denmark wins the war. Almost all of the
Jews were brought to Sweden. Now that I have told about the movie, I will tell you about some of ...

The setting is Denmark. In the beginning of the book, Annemarie and her best friend Ellen are
racing down the street on their way home from school. A German soldier stops them and asks them
where they are going so fast. In the movie, Elsa's older brother Henrik has to walk her to school.
Henrik is running fast and bumps into a soldier. In the book, Henrik is Annemarie's uncle. Annmarie
has a sister named Kirsti, and an older sister named Lise, who died in an accident. The movie
completely changes up the main characters. Another difference is that Henrik is part of the Danish
Resistance in Miracle at Midnight. The father works at a hospital. When the day comes for the Nazi

Book Review : Midnight Magic By Woody Allen
Paris' Midnight Magic For nearly fifty years, Woody Allen has been writing and directing lucrative
films and television shows. One of his most recent productions is a film called Midnight in Paris that
has multiple famous actors and actresses playing the main roles. This fantasy film takes place in the
most popular city destination, Paris, a city known for its breathtaking sites. The film often alternates
between different time periods such as the 1890s and 1920s due to a type of time travel the
protagonist experiences. The film's numerous awards and nominations, in addition to notorious cast
members and impressive profits, all provide evidence that Midnight in Paris was a successful film
that accomplished the goal of satisfying viewers. Gil Pender is an aspiring novelist from Pasadena,
California who believes he should have been born during France's Golden Age, the 1920s. Gil and
his fiancé Inez tag along to Paris with Inez's wealthy parents who are there for business reasons.
While in Paris, Gil and Inez run into one of Inez's past boyfriends from college, Paul, who invites
them to join in various activities around the city. During these activities, Paul falsely explains the
numerous sculptures and monuments the group observes. However, Inez is extremely attracted to his
pseudo intelligence and later on in the film can not resist his affection. One night Paul invites the
couple to dancing and Gil states that he rather walk around Paris and enjoy the sights. On the other

How the Transition from Film to Digital Cinema Affected...
How did the transition from film to digital cinema affect cinematography?
1. How did the transition from film to digital cinema affect cinematography?
The transition from film to digital cinema drastically changed the way films were made and greatly
affected the cinematography of films. Digital versus film has been a widely debated subject in the
film industry since the availability of digital cameras at the end of the 20th century. Now in the 21st
century, digital dominates the film industry, so why is 35mm film still being used by both amateur
and professional filmmakers? For years film was seen as a joke, far more inferior to digital, because
of the fact that digital gave a better picture and was more convenient to use. But now, film has
developed to the point where the typical audience cannot see the difference between HD digital
films and 35mm films. For example, HDTV laser–beam recording on 35mm colour film can now be
used to enhance the quality of the image without using digital. So now to answer the question earlier
on why 35mm film is still being used today is that it is a preference for some directors. Although the
average viewer cannot spot the difference between digital and film, that doesn't mean that there
aren't any differences between them.
2. Image Quality
There is a clear difference in image quality between digital and 35mm film. The quality of films can
be measured in different ways, such as the resolution of the picture, the noise and grain of

Movie Review : ' Pirates Of The Caribbean ' On Stranger...
Akanksha Jain, 504563970 Professor Jonathan Kuntz TA, M. M. Reinhard Research Paper 2 B–
MOVIES: THE SECONDARY PRODUCTION Hollywood today spends more money on movies
than ever before, with an average budget of $140 million per movie. 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On
Stranger Tides'; the most expensive movie ever made; cost approximately $378.5 million and that
was five years ago. This isn't surprising since history is witness to a rising trend in money spent on
movies, however, even after adjusting for inflation, their impact on the industry isn't as large as their
budgets. Over the years, lower cost productions like B–Movies have played a major role in carrying
the industry forward by keeping it stable, moving and profitable in times of trouble. B–Movies came
to be the need of the hour after The Great Depression and World War II. Money was tight
everywhere and Hollywood could not continue making extravagant movies therefore they turned to
low budget commercial films. These movies not only have an economical significance in
Hollywood, they have made more than one contribution to the industry. These low risk movies
provided directors, writers and producers with a wide scope for experimentation and led to the
creation of many genres and sub–genres. The origins of B–Movies are humble but over the years
that they grew in Hollywood, they became more significant and successful, yet their progress from
"Rags to Riches" remains more a behind–the–scenes heroic act than a superhero

Poem Analysis : Frost At Midnight By Samuel Taylor Coleridge
The name of this is "Frost at Midnight". It was written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. It's a traditional
piece of poem. My overall first impression of "Frost at Midnight" Is that it's a love poem due to
these words "Dear Babe". Once I saw "Dear Babe" I immediately thought that this poem is going to
be about a woman that he's either in love with or his describing the woman of his dreams. He could
also be describing the night that he met the woman of his dreams. The word "Dear Babe" is why I
said that this poem is a traditional poem. This poem is not a sonnet. It has a total of four stanzas. The
characters are the author himself, Samuel, his infant child and the stranger. The stranger is the snow
I believe that he calls the snow a stranger because it's something that he does not know or interact
with. The theme of this poem is that we should take our time to admire nature's greatness. Nature
can teach us many wonderous goods as long we let it. He's also telling us that we cannot fight
against nature be since he compares it to God. The "Frost at midnight" is in the first–person point of
view. It's in the first person because the author is the telling the story and is using the word I. The
rhyme scheme of this poem is A, B, C, D, E, F. "The frost performs its secret ministry, Unhelped by
any wind" I can see that the snow is falling and covering everything around, but at the time and
speed that the snow falls it makes you think that it does want you to see what it's in the moment that
it's doing it. "The thin blue flame Lies on my low burnt fire and quiver not" The fire is about to die
due to low fuel and stays perfectly still. "Thou, my babe! Shalt wander like a breeze by the lakes and
sandy shore" I can picture the person walking very slowly as if they were a snail. The poem took
place on a winter night in Samuel's house after everyone in the house had gone the sleep he went to
his infant cradle. As the poem unfolded the setting shift to a school. The other places that this poem
visited were a town, lake sandy shores. The Church bells symbolize the type of music that the old
man used to listen to. The stranger symbolism the frost, the snow. Dear babe symbolizes the amount
of love that he has for his

Cult Film : Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive And David...
The key concept to be explored is genre and my investigation will revolve around focused research
on the expansive genre of cult film, as I look to not only elaborate on it, but also try to clarify it.
Utilising the work of theorists Sconce, Fiske, Austin and many others, I will base my research
around two contrasting texts that are both connected by cult film – Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive
and David Fincher's Fight Club, analysing not only how their technical and visual codes help to give
them cult status, but also how their audience appeal ties in with niche psychometrics and cult film
overall. Since its beginnings in the 1950s with movies like Plan 9 from Outer Space and The Blob,
cult film has never utilised one set of conventions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This case can also be reemphasised by theorists Fiske and Jancovitch too, as both have looked to
create compelling connections between audience reception procedures and cult film also. What's
more, many of these theorists have also come to contend theoretical responses about the conception
of 'resurrection' in cult film – the ideology that one way for a film to achieve its cult status is
through being 'revived' from its bumpy origins in production or commercial disappointments at the
box–office through the lasting appreciation of niche audiences. This therefore means that the film
will survive in an oppositional context to what Fiske declared as the 'more "normal" popular
audiences' of that period. In addition, it is this ideology of 'resurrection' within cult film that David
Fincher's Fight Club illustrates. "'Fight Club' sold 13 million DVDs. It paid for itself." proclaimed
auteur David Fincher, whose text back in 1999 was financially unsuccessful, but soon gained cult
status through its DVD releases and fandom events that were a commercial hit. Subjectively
following the point of view of Brad Pitt's rebellious protagonist Tyler Durden and his coming of age
society, Fight Club is a present–day touchstone for audiences to recognise the

If you had the chance to watch your favorite movie as if it was your first time, would you take it?
Do you find the idea of seeing your most cherished cinematic moments with fresh eyes? Would you
like to experience the surprise or suspense of a film without prior knowledge spoiling it for you?
According to comedians Matt Braunger and Ron Funches, the answer is a resounding "yes." Movie
Mind Machine explores what it would be like if there was a device that could wipe your memory of
a film, thereby allowing you to experience it as though you had never seen it before. Clocking in at

transformed after the former invents a helmet that can erase a person's recollection of a film.
Enamored by the prospect of seeing they love for the first time again and again, the two men delve
themselves into their pastime to the point that it takes over their lives. The principal thing that makes
Movie Mind Machine such a funny short film is the performances by the two main actors. Both
Braunger and Funches are talented comedians, as their other work shows. Braunger was cast
member on the successful sketch comedy show, MADTV, and has a recurring role on the NBC
sitcom, Up All Night. Funches has been lauded for his stand–up material, and is notable for being
the winningest contestant on the Comedy Central game show, @midnight. The comedic abilities of
both men are on full display in this short. Each joke is given the right delivery, and it is obvious that
they truly have a profound love of cinema. The

Movie Theatre Shooting
The topic we will be discussing in our paper is the Aurora Colorado Movie theatre shooting. First
we will go over the events that happened in that movie theatre that day. Then we will discuss the
security personal that the movie theatre had before the incident occurred. In addition we will go
fourth with discussing how the police, hospital and other emergency personals responded to the
tragic event. Did movie theatres change their way of security since this event? Then we will
compare this event to homeland security and explain their connection. The Department of Homeland
Security is constantly learning new things and changing procedures and protocols as needed to
create a safe and secure nation. This event was important because the Department of Homeland
Security took into consideration maybe their needs to be more security in movie theatres. Before this
event movie theatres were one of the last places you think a tragic shooting incident would occur.
A few questions we wish to answer by the time we finish our research on this paper are the
following:
Did this event have a big enough impact on our society to initiate the change of gun laws?
Have movie theatres since this event changed security protocols or enhanced security in general?
On July 20, 2012 in Aurora, Colorado, twelve innocent people were killed and about 70 others were
injured. This shooting happened at the midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" at the Century

Film Piracy and It's Effects in the Industry
Film Piracy and its effect on the Industry
Five Advantages of Film Piracy:
These are the "advantages" one might see for why to commit film piracy, but I by know way endorse
such a thing.
You can save money
Sometimes one may have the advantage of seeing a film before it is released on DVD
It's been made a lot easier to get ahold of pirated films and can usually be downloaded in minutes
one can peer–to–peer share with friends
One might see it as free publicity for the film
Five Disadvantages of Film Piracy:

I wonder if this is really Hollywood's way of two–tiered marketing. Supply movie theatres with
blockbuster releases and make huge profits at concession stands as well as the box office then
market bootlegs (Yes, I am asking aloud if they might be in on it) to the people who cannot afford to
enjoy the deluxe movie experience.
They look at us as losers, a negligible group on the margins of society and would rather we be kept
out of their shiny cineplexes, lest our BO offend the other patrons or we try to pester them for spare
change.
Piracy is a thorny issue in the Philippines. I think very few here can be holier–than–thou and say
they haven't bought a pirated game, bootleg DVD or other counterfeit good at some point. Yet most
of us agree that piracy is a crime.
Read my Infotech article "Game piracy may be financing other crimes: ESA exec," based on my e–
mail interview with Ric Hirsch, senior vice president for intellectual property enforcement of the
Entertainment Software Association. ESA is the US industry association representing the world's
biggest game publishers, and is the owner and operator of Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).
I've already gotten feedback from those who feel it's absurd to link game piracy to organized crime.
I think this really shows how we as consumers see piracy in terms mainly of getting a bargain, and
that most of us think it's a victimless crime. But

Movie Analysis : The Movie Starring An Actor
Throughout my life, my family and I have always undoubtedly been close. We spend time together
and just generally like one another. There are no activities that come up as a tradition or practice, we
regularly perform, but one little affair that is almost an unspoken tradition is the way I spend time
and connect with my dad. Sitting down on a rainy day or just the odd night to watch a movie
together has been a regular activity that my dad, my brother, my friends, and I do. Some may say
that watching movies is just a few people sitting on a couch not interacting or connecting in anyway.
But it just isn't. Finding a movie starring an actor, directed by a director or in a genre we both like is
an exciting process that is rewarded with 1.5 – 2.5 hours of suspense, excitement, and even laughter.
Emotions shared connect the two of us and engender a desire to replicate the experience by finding
more movies, together. There have even been whole Saturdays spent marathoning previous movies
from a series, anticipating the release of a new sequel. Take the release of, The Dark Knight Rises,
the third and final movie in the Batman trilogy. We had been planning for weeks in advance. The
new Batman movie was coming out and I could hardly hold back my excitement. The Batman
trilogy was always one of my dad's and my favorite. It combines different elements of action and
suspense that we just couldn't get enough of. What amplified this was that one of our favorite movie

Cinemas can be a great time , but staying home and watching a movie can be just as great.
Americans last year on average spent 9.87
billion dollars on tickets alone. Americans who stayed home saved a lot of money, were more
comfortable, and probably had just as good of a

The financial aspects of going out to the movies is the most appalling factor when you consider the

The ability to stretch out on my couch or my bed in a nice quiet environment is how I define
comfort. People argue the fact that

The whole idea of going to the movies entails having a good time, this phrase can be perceived in
many ways. Movie theatres do offer
the ability to go out whereas staying home does feel redundant after some time. Enjoying yourself at
home can be just as easy with the ability to
drink while watching the movie and you can pause it if you have to do something. Many people will
argue the fact that movie theatres have
massive sound systems and big screens. Home theatre systems retail about three hundred dollars and
offer Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound
just like the theatres. A good home theatre coupled with a quality HDTV can offer a life changing
experience over the theatre.
Theatres can be a nice place, but you will pay dearly for it. The comforts of home are free and more
enjoyable by far, needless to say the
fact that you will be paying to leave in more than one way. Comparing the two, while similar, are
complete opposites in my opinion. In todays
harder economic times I urge you to purchase a quality television and home theatre system. The
savings you will see are astounding, the
next time someone invites you out to the movies you can smile knowing you have all the

The Pros And Cons Of Sun Based Pokemon
Sun based Pokemon are better than Moon based Pokemon in design, abilities, and execution. By

Humans have always had opinions, some stronger than others, and today that topic will be discussed
in reference to a popular video game series, Pokemon. Now in order to keep opinions from being
too broad and contradictory The subject will be focusing on the Sun based Pokemon against its
counterpart; because face it every Pokemon is weak to something and for the most part Pokemon
matches are decided by what someone brings to the table. Execution, which is by far the most
factual way to prove that Sun Pokemon are indeed superior to Moon Pokemon, is placing them

The American disaster of the twin towers terrorist attack is also written about in the book. This
chapter has much emotion unlike the rest of the book, which I view as a poor point of the author as
although it was an international tragedy, the book itself should be focused upon the economics and I
feel the author spends too long speaking about the tragedy. The idea of the theory was good though
as it is current news that almost everyone knows and cares about – they also all have an emotional
bias and opinion on it. McKenzie explains the economics later on in the chapter very well although
his own personal opinion comes through too much. After his emotional introduction to the chapter,
there are too many numbers and not enough explanation, which is different to the remainder of the
books as generally he gets the balance right between the two.
The final chapter that I am going to analyse is 'why so many prices end with 9' this chapter is clear
cut and extremely interesting I found. The psychology behind the marketing choice is fascinating
and he uses economics in a daily surrounding which intrigues me more and I'm sure many others

does occasionally assume that the average person is very simple and not intelligent in the least. He

The Spoken Language Between Two Culturally Dissimilar...
Hola. Bonjour. Ciao. Namaste. Hallo. Hello. The spoken language between two culturally dissimilar
individuals has the capability to serve as a barricade for communication. If the primitive practice of
connection between two people is incomprehensible and ineffective, how can a man from the United
States and a woman from Germany understand one another? How can freshman Charlie relate to
seniors Sam and Patrick? How can a cheeky, uppity lady from Amish–country sit in a car with an
Italian from Dirty Jersey, like me, for three and a half hours? How can a character in a frequently
challenged, young adult novel be so comparable to me? Individuals seek cultural identity through
music in the era of independence and self–defining nature in a button–down, conformist society.
Cultural identity is the "part of a person's self–conception and self–perception and is related to social
class, generations, or any kind of social group" (reference.com). Our musical tastes and preferences
can form important statements regarding our own values and attitudes. How we are perceived in
society are reflected in the clothes we wear, the slang we speak, and the music blasting in our ears. It
is our badge of honor and commitment to the subcultures created under the artists we identify with.
By close association with a certain band or song, Charlie and I embroider our distinctiveness on our

Battle of the Woods: Nollywood Versus Hollywood
The Battle of the Woods: Hollywood and Nollywood Cinema of the United States has played an

huge success of American cinema, "The Great Train robbery" was released, we were introduced to a

Hollywood movies employ creative and bold methods to market their movies. A good deal of
promotion and advertising is targeted to getting people into theatres. Media blitzes are launched to
tout the movies weeks before its release. Posters on buses, billboards, designed T–shirts, websites
are used to promote Hollywood films. These films are then distributed to a diverse audience. Unless
they are extremely unsuccessful, Hollywood movies are always first shown in cinemas across the
world, before they are released on DVD. Nollywood films, on the other hand, do not put in a lot of
money and effort on the marketing of their films. Other than the movie posters which are usually
seen at the selling point of the films, not much advertising is employed. As all Nollywood films go
straight to DVD and VCD discs, the industry thrives on direct–to–video marketing. As many as
thirty new titles are delivered to Nigerian stores and market stalls every week. Producers rely on the
fact that with this outpour of releases, their movies would most certainly be picked up among the
crowd; hence, employing further marketing practices is unnecessary. Currently, the available
cinemas in Nigeria do not exhibit any Nollywood movies. The costs, methods of distribution, and

Synopsis
Amélie is mainly centered on the lead/title character Amélie Poulain. She is an imaginative girl who
had a very lonely childhood which explains her isolation from society once she grew up. Her father
Raphael Poulain who is a former doctor of the army, mistakenly believed that she was suffering
from a heart condition when she was a child and due to this, she was deemed unfit for school and
thus was home–schooled by her mother. Amelie's mother, Amandine Poulain is a school
headmistress. Unfortunately, when Amelie was young, her mother died in a bizarre accident with her
daughter by her side. This causes Raphael to be permanently depressed and he kept to himself most
of the time. Due to this, Amelie didn't receive much attention from her father growing up. When she
grows up, she becomes a waitress in a small café run by a former circus performer. After helping a
man rediscover his childhood Amelie decides to spend her life helping others. After a few
encounters and helping several eccentric characters, Amélie becomes attracted to a man she meets
named "Nino" who has an unusually hobby of collecting discarded photos. However, due to her
solitary ways, she is unable to approach him. In the end, Amelie schemes an elaborate romantic
gesture for Nino and they begin their relationship at the end of the movie.

Fantasy and Comedy.

A Clockwork Orange Violence
A Cinema of Violence and Sexuality: Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange 1970s American cinema can
be viewed as an extension to and, to a certain extent, the aftermath of the cultural explosion that
took place in the previous decade. Jon Lewis, in his book American Film, argues that around 1968 a
new auteur renaissance befell Hollywood. Directors like Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese,
Robert Altman, and several others came to the forefront of film and received generous funding from
the studios for their projects. The cause of this can be traced to the change in censorship laws which
took place during the '60s; where the studio–model of filmmaking had prospered under the old strict

today than they possibly were in 1971. There is no simple solution to the conundrum of what to do
with vicious thugs like Alex and his droogs; on the one hand their affinity for "ultra–violence" is
deplorable in civilized and modern societies, yet society's means of dealing with them seem to be
totally ineffective. Kubrick also highlights the gross hypocrisy among government officials as well
as anti–establishment activists. While the Minister is despicable in his disregard for lower–class

Even though there are a big number of suppliers in the market, suppliers could become greedy. For
instance, if the HBO (supplier) has good quality products such as the TV shows of the year or the
most viewed like "Game of Thrones", HBO could charge a big chunk for licensing its services to
Netflix (buyer), which give HBO power over its buyers. If at the end, Netflix decided not to buy
HBO services, another buyer like RedBox will buy the product. So RedBox may attract more
customers, because the market decides what is trending. New Entrants: Since the buyer's demand is
rising quickly, and technological advances have eased the entrance for competing businesses to
emerge, I considered this a "High" force. I also think, that the entry barriers are low, because
companies not necessarily need to pay suppliers for the high priced licensing services. They may
negotiate a royalty fee on the buyer's annual sales, which may favor even more suppliers. Thus, I
believe there are a vast number of companies that could easily compete with the existing ones, and
potentially offer the same or better service. c. I believe this is an attractive industry because there is

Instruction for Case: Netflix’s Business Model and...
Instructions for Analysis of Case 6
1. How strong are the competitive forces in the movie rental marketplace? Do a five forces analysis
to support your answer.
Below is an analysis of five forces model of competition in the movie rental industry:
Rivalry among companies competing in movie rentals
Rivalry is centered on such factors as
Price of movie rentals (rented either individually or via a subscription plan); variety of subscription
plans to choose from.
Convenience in renting movies (including returning rented DVDs).
Breadth of selection (size and diversity of movie rental library).
Availability of the DVD
Of course, DVD availability is not a factor when the rented movie is being streamed over the
Internet by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But while collective competitive pressures are fairly strong and likely to intensify, they are now not
so strong as to prevent many movie rental companies–especially Netflix–from being profitable. Up
to this point, the movie rental companies (with the exception of Blockbuster and Movie Gallery)
have able to cope with rivalry, the bargaining power of the movie studios, and the competitive
pressures from substitutes. It would not, however, come as a shock if the bargaining power of the
movie studios begins to squeeze the profitability of VOD/Internet streaming providers as they
demand bigger fees in return for granting streaming access to the libraries of movie titles.
The dismal financial performance of Blockbuster and Movie Gallery confirm that competitive
conditions for earning attractive profits are pretty tough. Netflix, on the other hand, is doing very,
very well from the standpoints of revenue growth and financial performance. (This is true of
Redbox, as well, which is the subject of the next case)
2. What forces are driving change in the movie rental industry? Are these driving forces likely to
have a favorable or unfavorable impact on competitive intensity and future industry profitability?
 Technological changes related to the Internet.
 Changes in how the product is used.
 Changes in costs
Prices for wide–screen, high definition TVs have been

Impressions Gained of Pip's Character from Great Expectations
'Pip' is very much a child in the the first chapter. However, it is
Pip narrating it as an adult ( retrospective narrator). You know he is a child by his 'childish' thoughts
and his rather odd imagination. He manages to come up with the 'childish conclusion' that his father
is a
'square, stout, dark man, with curly hair' just by looking at his fathers tombstone. Also, that his
mother was 'freckled and sickly'. It is quite bizarre that Pip has managed to conjour up that idea
from a tombstone. I think Dickens has done this to prove a childs nieve, yet wild imagination. I
think Pip tries to trace his parents or identify them this way just so he can feel placed in the ... Show

An impression I also recieve from Pip is that he is very polite. He repeatedly uses the word 'sir'
when speaking to Magwitch even when
Magwitch is threatening to cut Pips throat.
I also believe that the setting has a link to Pips feelings and the whole atmosphere. The setting is
used to make Pips visit to the graveyard more 'memorable'. The setting's 'dark, flat wilderness' also
builds up the tension and emotion for Magwitch's arrival. It also adds to Pip's fear and emotion.
Magwitch was a 'fearful man, all in coarse grey with a great iron on his leg'. At this time Pip was
'undersized for his years and not very strong'. Pip is very afraid of Magwitch and he is only a young
child who is already going through the emotion of his parents and brothers deaths. You know Pip
was very traumatised as he sat 'trembling' while Magwitch ate the bread 'ravenously' and tried to
keep himself from 'crying'.
Pips fear of Magwitch grows when Magwitch says 'I ain't alone, as you may think I am'. Dickens
does this to intimidate Pip even more and to make Pips experience with Magwitch as fearful and as
memorable as possible. Magwitch then starts to go into great detail about what the other man can
supposedly do. The description of the man kind of sounds like a ghost or horror story and Magwitch
refers to himself as an
'Angel' compared to the other man. ' You may think yourself comftable and safe, but that young man
will softly creep and creep his way

Shakespeare's Henry Plays – A Comparative Study of Falstaff on Film
The Character of Sir John Falstaff is an integral part of any adaptation of Shakespeare's "Henry"
plays. The treatment of this character effects the way the production will be taken by the audience as
the treatment of Falstaff is directly related to the understanding of the character of Prince Hal (later
Henry V). Kenneth Branagh's Henry V, the BBC versions of parts one and two of Henry IV, and
Orson Welles' amalgamation Chimes at Midnight all show Falstaff in different lights, producing
three different takes, not only on the character himself, but also on the interpretation of Prince Hal,
and the entire workings of the production.
In the case of Kenneth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In an abbreviated sort of version of the rejection scene, Prince Hal (Branagh) shows his intense link
to Falstaff by conveying his lines of rejection and banishment without spoken words, choosing
instead to use his facial expressions (assisted by a voice over by Branagh) to illustrate his thoughts.
Falstaff's reception of Hal's non–verbal meaning shows the fact that Hal and Falstaff are linked
beyond friendship and family, while the words themselves show that despite this union Hal has no
qualms about using Falstaff to achieve his ends. The humanization of Falstaff changes the way we
look at the character of Henry V and the production as a whole, as with Falstaff so much more pure,
Henry is seen as the Machiavel he must become in order to succeed his father.
The BBC versions of Henry IV parts one and two show Jack Falstaff (played by Anthony Quayle) as
a different sort of character altogether. In these productions the lecherous, unhealthy, and alcoholic
qualities instilled in Falstaff are accentuated to a nearly morbid respect. While, unlike Branagh, the
screenwriter leaves the lines intact, those lines that commonly evoke humor tend to evoke pity, or
disgust instead. Quayle's appearance is not that of a robust jester who promotes joviality and wins
the affection of the audience, but rather is a sickly, fat man who drunkenly forces his words out of
the side of his mouth. While this Falstaff accentuates

Pirates Of The Caribbe On Stranger Tides

  • 1. Pirates Of The Caribbe On Stranger Tides Hollywood today spends more money on movies than ever before, with an average budget of $140 million per movie. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides; the most expensive movie ever made; cost approximately $378.5 million and that was five years ago. This isn't surprising since history is witness to a rising trend in money spent on movies, even after adjusting for inflation, however, their impact on the industry isn't as large as their budgets. Over the years, lower cost productions like B–Movies have played a major role in carrying the industry forward by keeping it stable, moving and profitable in times of trouble. B–Movies came to be the need of the hour after The Great Depression and World War II. Money was tight everywhere and Hollywood could not continue making extravagant movies therefore they turned to low budget commercial films. These movies not only have an economical significance in Hollywood, they have made more than one contribution to the industry. These low risk movies provided directors, writers and producers with a wide scope for experimentation and led to the creation of many a genres and sub–genres. The origins of B–Movies are humble but over the years that they grew in Hollywood, they became more significant and successful, yet their progress from "Rags to Riches" remains more a behind–the– scenes heroic act than a superhero effort. B–Movies originally came into being to serve the purpose of being the second class feature in the double–feature ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The performance is so convincing and Lenny so gritty that today's audiences may think they are seeing Lenny Bruce himself.Photo by Mary Evans/Ronald Grant/courtesy Everett Collection The term impersonator is considered somewhat demeaning in the acting world, suggesting that the actor has simply copied the manner, dialect, and behavior of a character, instead of creating the character. Even though he can be considered a personality actor, no one would argue that Nicholson, who has been nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won three, is a brilliant actor. Will audiences 50 years from now recognize the strength of personality? Or will it simply seemed mannered and curious, a distraction instead of a beloved trait? A star is a distinctive screen persona, who is well–known and popular with the moviegoing public, often to the point that some avid movie fans become deeply curious about the actor's private life Hollywood has a long love affair with stars, since the days of Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford. The Current Rating System in the United States Essay English 122 12–1–11 The Current Rating System in the United States The current content rating system in use for film, the MPAA, is the only content rating system that is legally enforced in the United States. For this reason, the system has caused controversy. Many have claimed that the system is unbalanced, as the MPAA bases the level of appropriate content for all people in the United States off of the opinions of an unidentified council of people over the age of forty (Jenkins). The stance on how the system's effectiveness is a relative stance, however, the secondhand effects of the system are obvious and existing today. Decisions have been made by film distribution companies that have affected the way films with objectionable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This type of butterfly effect that the rating system has on films is evident: the attempt to block off certain age limits to harsh types of content has ultimately put pressure on artists to limit types of ways to tell a story in mainstream film. In the interview with filmmaker Kirby Dick on this subject, the interviewer asks him about the topic of sexuality in film, MPAA's stance on sexuality, and how Dick represented these ideas presented in his film. Dick stated, Allison Anders makes the very interesting point that in some ways the ratings system is more restrictive of sexuality now than it was in the Sixties and Seventies. I think there are a number of reasons. Perhaps to some degree society has shifted slightly. Film studios were making some money from films that were more sexually provocative, like Midnight Cowboy. But, then again, you have to realize that the studios benefit from the system's coming down hard on films, especially on independent films about adult sexuality. To begin with, who makes those films? Independents and foreign filmmakers make those films, and that's the studios' competition. So they restrict it. It's not much competition, but it does make a difference. • 25. The Genre Of Cult Film The area of study to be explored is genre and my investigation will look into ways we are able to clarify the vast genre of cult film. Speculated by theorists such as Sconce, Jancovich and many others, cult film is one of the most diverse and ambiguous genres of the past 60 years in motion picture history. Beginning in the 1950s with unconventional flicks like Plan 9 from Outer Space and The Blob, cult film as a 'quasi–genre' began to not only reject one set of stylistic conventions, but also started to expand into various sub–genres that it could 'umbrella'. Highlighted by Sconce in his study, '[cult film] would include entries from disparate sub–genres such as "bad films"...and just about every other manifestation of exploitation cinema ... In addition to this, those who construct and encode ideologies and messages into cult films need to know and implement a repertoire of elements that will go against the pleasures of recognition and provide a more sophisticated and untraditional narrative experience. Whether through manipulating time and space, or providing powerful subject matter, it is through these technical and visual codes that the text will continuously challenge audience expectation and draw a preferred or oppositional reading to the weird and wonderful it tries to represent. As argued by Thornton, 'it is not defined according to some single, unifying feature shared by all cult movies, but rather through a 'sub– cultural ideology' in filmmakers, films or audiences are seen as existing in opposition to the mainstream.' Therefore, the audience appeal for cult film is not only through its quirky and abnormal generic values, but also through the plurality of artistic control that is held by the auteur and its audience's desires. He wraps a blanket around himself, inserts his earphones, and sits mostly in the darkness. Only a computer screen shines a light on his face. He usually has none of his homework finished when that light is on, but perhaps he plays for that reason – to distract, to hide, to avoid. Peeking over his shoulder, I sometimes try to join him, not in the hiding, just in the disappearing. But he no longer needs – or wants – me to play with him as we did years ago on a silver Game Boy Advance. On it, I would be his eyes and his fingers. And I knew he would have the blue Game Boy, and I would have to get one from the heaps of silver Game Boys. Blue, my parents said, was for boys, and I needed to stop making Randy upset. A part of me felt resentful, angered, frustrated for this parrot who mimicked my words but barely squawked on his own. At "my" party the next week, I knowingly turned over the silver Game Boy in my hands. The five buttons just seemed a little more awkward, the surface a little more dull, and the flipped up screen a little more stiff when I saw my brother's gleaming, slick device. Envy boiled inside. What did he do differently? What did he do better than I? Although I had known for years already, the reminder that my birthday was also Randy's – when his actual day of birth was four months away – made me seethe in anger. My reaction to his Game Boy may seem irrational – fussing over some silly color and blaming a child for it all. But I was a child, too. And my parents had forgotten that. From the time I was six, I was writing out their checks, filling out their paperwork before doctor appointments, and reading the manual to set up the Game Boy and every other device in our house. Humor in The Simpsons Essay Humor in The Simpsons I and many other millions of people across the world believe that The Simpson's is the best programme on television because it is funny in more ways then one. The Simpson's uses the family lifestyle that many American TV shows have used over past (e.g. The Adam's family, The Flintstones) but The Simpson's has proved it is a lot more popular because it uses many more different forms of comedy which work with people from all ages. Slapstick comedy is where someone gets hurt and you laugh but if you saw it happen in real life you'd find it sick for example when homer the father strangles his son Bart in many episodes it would be seen as child abuse in real life but you ... Another great example is where Bart writes " I can't see dead people" on the board in the opening credits which is a parody of The sixth sense which is a supernatural film about ghosts and there is a memorable quote where the young boy says "I see dead people". Another example of Intertextuality is where they use the idea of the matrix, which is a sci–fi film where the actors dodge bullets and move in slow motion. And in the Simpson's Bart starts running up walls and dodging bullets and moving in slow motion and is quite enjoyable to watch because its good seeing the Simpson's doing it. Intertextuality is a sophisticated type of comedy because the older viewers are more likely to grasp examples of these then younger viewers. Running gags are things you will probably see in every episode and are funny every time you see them. Running gags are jokes that are same jokes and actions that reappear every now and again. For example Homer always strangles his son Bart whenever he's rude or annoys Homer usually by outsmarting him. What are primary advantages and disadvantages of the approach that was taken by us in valuing the sequel rights? B–MOVIES: FROM RAGS TO RICHES Hollywood today spends more money on movies than ever before, with an average budget of $140 million per movie. 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides'; the most expensive movie ever made; cost approximately $378.5 million and that was five years ago. This isn't surprising since history is witness to a rising trend in money spent on movies, however, even after adjusting for inflation, their impact on the industry isn't as large as their budgets. These low risk movies provided directors, writers and producers with a wide scope for experimentation and led to the creation of many genres and sub–genres. The origins of B–Movies are humble but over the years that they grew in Hollywood, they became more significant and successful, yet their progress from "Rags to Riches" remains more a behind–the–scenes heroic act than a superhero effort. The superhero genre is popular among young adults. While big studios like Marvel and DC are competing for audiences, many overlook Fox studio, which has been making critically acclaimed superhero movies like the X–Men way before the surge of the genre. The competition between studios create an oversaturation making it hard for films like Logan to stand, but it does this and more. Logan not only transcends the superhero genre but also turns the superhero format on its head. Logan incorporates elements found in the drama, road trip, and western genre and emphasizes emotion over action. Set in a post–apocalyptic future, Logon tells the story of a broken down Wolverine in his older years, taking care of Charles. Despite his reluctance to engage in any more conflicts, he is forced to escort Laura, a young girl, to safety. Although Logan may be criticized for its one–dimensional villains and overdone story, director James Mangold, successfully crafted an excellent film that separates itself from the genre through realistic characters and a simplistic plot. The vengeful, and sickening Chillingworth from Hawthorne' Scarlet Letter, let revenge consume him, a character that shows this same character flaw, is Tom the cat, from Tom and Jerry. Tom is a very curious, and mischievous cat, whose only daily routine is to torment the innocent little mouse, Jerry. These two characters have three distinct resemblances, both spend most their lives seeking revenge on their fellow characters, both only end up hurting themselves as a result of this revenge, and both do not fulfil the desire to gain revenge, and end up with an unsatisfactory ending. These seemingly cynical characters are similar because they both crave the same thing in life, revenge. Chillingworth is consumed by the hope of psychologically torturing Dimmesdale. One example of this is when Chillingworth brings home some herbs, "I found them growing on a grave, which bore no tombstone, or other memorial of the Deadman, save these ugly weeds that have taken upon themselves to keep him in remembrance. They grew out of his heart, and typify, it may be, some hideous secret that was buried with him, and which he had done better to confess during his lifetime" (pg. 108). One of his most recent productions is a film called Midnight in Paris that has multiple famous actors and actresses playing the main roles. This fantasy film takes place in the most popular city destination, Paris, a city known for its breathtaking sites. The film often alternates between different time periods such as the 1890s and 1920s due to a type of time travel the protagonist experiences. The film's numerous awards and nominations, in addition to notorious cast members and impressive profits, all provide evidence that Midnight in Paris was a successful film that accomplished the goal of satisfying viewers. Gil Pender is an aspiring novelist from Pasadena, California who believes he should have been born during France's Golden Age, the 1920s. Gil and his fiancé Inez tag along to Paris with Inez's wealthy parents who are there for business reasons. While in Paris, Gil and Inez run into one of Inez's past boyfriends from college, Paul, who invites them to join in various activities around the city. • 78. How the Transition from Film to Digital Cinema Affected... How did the transition from film to digital cinema affect cinematography? 1. How did the transition from film to digital cinema affect cinematography? The transition from film to digital cinema drastically changed the way films were made and greatly affected the cinematography of films. Digital versus film has been a widely debated subject in the film industry since the availability of digital cameras at the end of the 20th century. Now in the 21st century, digital dominates the film industry, so why is 35mm film still being used by both amateur and professional filmmakers? For years film was seen as a joke, far more inferior to digital, because of the fact that digital gave a better picture and was more convenient to use. But now, film has developed to the point where the typical audience cannot see the difference between HD digital films and 35mm films. For example, HDTV laser–beam recording on 35mm colour film can now be used to enhance the quality of the image without using digital. So now to answer the question earlier on why 35mm film is still being used today is that it is a preference for some directors. Although the average viewer cannot spot the difference between digital and film, that doesn't mean that there aren't any differences between them. 2. Image Quality There is a clear difference in image quality between digital and 35mm film. The quality of films can be measured in different ways, such as the resolution of the picture, the noise and grain of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 82. Movie Review : ' Pirates Of The Caribbean ' On Stranger... Akanksha Jain, 504563970 Professor Jonathan Kuntz TA, M. M. Reinhard Research Paper 2 B– MOVIES: THE SECONDARY PRODUCTION Hollywood today spends more money on movies than ever before, with an average budget of $140 million per movie. These low risk movies provided directors, writers and producers with a wide scope for experimentation and led to the creation of many genres and sub–genres. The origins of B–Movies are humble but over the years that they grew in Hollywood, they became more significant and successful, yet their progress from "Rags to Riches" remains more a behind–the–scenes heroic act than a superhero ... • 86. Poem Analysis : Frost At Midnight By Samuel Taylor Coleridge The name of this is "Frost at Midnight". It was written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. It's a traditional piece of poem. My overall first impression of "Frost at Midnight" Is that it's a love poem due to these words "Dear Babe". Once I saw "Dear Babe" I immediately thought that this poem is going to be about a woman that he's either in love with or his describing the woman of his dreams. He could also be describing the night that he met the woman of his dreams. The word "Dear Babe" is why I said that this poem is a traditional poem. This poem is not a sonnet. It has a total of four stanzas. The characters are the author himself, Samuel, his infant child and the stranger. The stranger is the snow I believe that he calls the snow a stranger because it's something that he does not know or interact with. The theme of this poem is that we should take our time to admire nature's greatness. Nature can teach us many wonderous goods as long we let it. He's also telling us that we cannot fight against nature be since he compares it to God. The "Frost at midnight" is in the first–person point of view. It's in the first person because the author is the telling the story and is using the word I. The rhyme scheme of this poem is A, B, C, D, E, F. "The frost performs its secret ministry, Unhelped by any wind" I can see that the snow is falling and covering everything around, but at the time and speed that the snow falls it makes you think that it does want you to see what it's in the moment that it's doing it. "The thin blue flame Lies on my low burnt fire and quiver not" The fire is about to die due to low fuel and stays perfectly still. "Thou, my babe! Shalt wander like a breeze by the lakes and sandy shore" I can picture the person walking very slowly as if they were a snail. The poem took place on a winter night in Samuel's house after everyone in the house had gone the sleep he went to his infant cradle. As the poem unfolded the setting shift to a school. The other places that this poem visited were a town, lake sandy shores. The Church bells symbolize the type of music that the old man used to listen to. The stranger symbolism the frost, the snow. Dear babe symbolizes the amount of love that he has for his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 90. Cult Film : Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive And David... The key concept to be explored is genre and my investigation will revolve around focused research on the expansive genre of cult film, as I look to not only elaborate on it, but also try to clarify it. Utilising the work of theorists Sconce, Fiske, Austin and many others, I will base my research around two contrasting texts that are both connected by cult film – Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive and David Fincher's Fight Club, analysing not only how their technical and visual codes help to give them cult status, but also how their audience appeal ties in with niche psychometrics and cult film overall. Since its beginnings in the 1950s with movies like Plan 9 from Outer Space and The Blob, cult film has never utilised one set of conventions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This case can also be reemphasised by theorists Fiske and Jancovitch too, as both have looked to create compelling connections between audience reception procedures and cult film also. What's more, many of these theorists have also come to contend theoretical responses about the conception of 'resurrection' in cult film – the ideology that one way for a film to achieve its cult status is through being 'revived' from its bumpy origins in production or commercial disappointments at the box–office through the lasting appreciation of niche audiences. This therefore means that the film will survive in an oppositional context to what Fiske declared as the 'more "normal" popular audiences' of that period. In addition, it is this ideology of 'resurrection' within cult film that David Fincher's Fight Club illustrates. "'Fight Club' sold 13 million DVDs. It paid for itself." proclaimed auteur David Fincher, whose text back in 1999 was financially unsuccessful, but soon gained cult status through its DVD releases and fandom events that were a commercial hit. Subjectively following the point of view of Brad Pitt's rebellious protagonist Tyler Durden and his coming of age society, Fight Club is a present–day touchstone for audiences to recognise the ... There are no activities that come up as a tradition or practice, we regularly perform, but one little affair that is almost an unspoken tradition is the way I spend time and connect with my dad. Sitting down on a rainy day or just the odd night to watch a movie together has been a regular activity that my dad, my brother, my friends, and I do. Some may say that watching movies is just a few people sitting on a couch not interacting or connecting in anyway. But it just isn't. Finding a movie starring an actor, directed by a director or in a genre we both like is an exciting process that is rewarded with 1.5 – 2.5 hours of suspense, excitement, and even laughter. Emotions shared connect the two of us and engender a desire to replicate the experience by finding more movies, together. By Jeramie Fisher The sun and moon have always been a constant presence and source of inspiration for human beings, ranging from deities to simply providing warmth and a beautiful sight to see. Humans have always had opinions, some stronger than others, and today that topic will be discussed in reference to a popular video game series, Pokemon. Now in order to keep opinions from being too broad and contradictory The subject will be focusing on the Sun based Pokemon against its counterpart; because face it every Pokemon is weak to something and for the most part Pokemon matches are decided by what someone brings to the table. Execution, which is by far the most factual way to prove that Sun Pokemon are indeed superior to Moon Pokemon, is placing them directly against each other in an actual fight without the aid of others and seeing who has the upper hand when facing off solo. The spoken language between two culturally dissimilar individuals has the capability to serve as a barricade for communication. If the primitive practice of connection between two people is incomprehensible and ineffective, how can a man from the United States and a woman from Germany understand one another? How can freshman Charlie relate to seniors Sam and Patrick? How can a cheeky, uppity lady from Amish–country sit in a car with an Italian from Dirty Jersey, like me, for three and a half hours? How can a character in a frequently challenged, young adult novel be so comparable to me? Our musical tastes and preferences can form important statements regarding our own values and attitudes. How we are perceived in society are reflected in the clothes we wear, the slang we speak, and the music blasting in our ears. It is our badge of honor and commitment to the subcultures created under the artists we identify with. Directors like Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Robert Altman, and several others came to the forefront of film and received generous funding from the studios for their projects. Availability of the DVD Of course, DVD availability is not a factor when the rented movie is being streamed over the Internet by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But while collective competitive pressures are fairly strong and likely to intensify, they are now not so strong as to prevent many movie rental companies–especially Netflix–from being profitable. Up to this point, the movie rental companies (with the exception of Blockbuster and Movie Gallery) have able to cope with rivalry, the bargaining power of the movie studios, and the competitive pressures from substitutes. It would not, however, come as a shock if the bargaining power of the movie studios begins to squeeze the profitability of VOD/Internet streaming providers as they demand bigger fees in return for granting streaming access to the libraries of movie titles. The dismal financial performance of Blockbuster and Movie Gallery confirm that competitive conditions for earning attractive profits are pretty tough. Netflix, on the other hand, is doing very, very well from the standpoints of revenue growth and financial performance. (This is true of Redbox, as well, which is the subject of the next case) 2. What forces are driving change in the movie rental industry? Are these driving forces likely to have a favorable or unfavorable impact on competitive intensity and future industry profitability?  Technological changes related to the Internet.  Changes in how the product is used.  Changes in costs Prices for wide–screen, high definition TVs have been ... However, it is Pip narrating it as an adult ( retrospective narrator). You know he is a child by his 'childish' thoughts and his rather odd imagination. He manages to come up with the 'childish conclusion' that his father is a 'square, stout, dark man, with curly hair' just by looking at his fathers tombstone. Also, that his mother was 'freckled and sickly'. It is quite bizarre that Pip has managed to conjour up that idea from a tombstone. I think Dickens has done this to prove a childs nieve, yet wild imagination. I think Pip tries to trace his parents or identify them this way just so he can feel placed in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An impression I also recieve from Pip is that he is very polite. He repeatedly uses the word 'sir' when speaking to Magwitch even when Magwitch is threatening to cut Pips throat. I also believe that the setting has a link to Pips feelings and the whole atmosphere. The setting is used to make Pips visit to the graveyard more 'memorable'. The setting's 'dark, flat wilderness' also builds up the tension and emotion for Magwitch's arrival. It also adds to Pip's fear and emotion. Magwitch was a 'fearful man, all in coarse grey with a great iron on his leg'. At this time Pip was 'undersized for his years and not very strong'. Pip is very afraid of Magwitch and he is only a young child who is already going through the emotion of his parents and brothers deaths. You know Pip was very traumatised as he sat 'trembling' while Magwitch ate the bread 'ravenously' and tried to keep himself from 'crying'. Pips fear of Magwitch grows when Magwitch says 'I ain't alone, as you may think I am'. Dickens does this to intimidate Pip even more and to make Pips experience with Magwitch as fearful and as memorable as possible. Magwitch then starts to go into great detail about what the other man can supposedly do. The description of the man kind of sounds like a ghost or horror story and Magwitch refers to himself as an 'Angel' compared to the other man. ' You may think yourself comftable and safe, but that young man will softly creep and creep his way ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 156. Movie Essays Shakespeare's Henry Plays – A Comparative Study of Falstaff on Film The Character of Sir John Falstaff is an integral part of any adaptation of Shakespeare's "Henry" plays. The treatment of this character effects the way the production will be taken by the audience as the treatment of Falstaff is directly related to the understanding of the character of Prince Hal (later Henry V). Kenneth Branagh's Henry V, the BBC versions of parts one and two of Henry IV, and Orson Welles' amalgamation Chimes at Midnight all show Falstaff in different lights, producing three different takes, not only on the character himself, but also on the interpretation of Prince Hal, and the entire workings of the production. In the case of Kenneth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In an abbreviated sort of version of the rejection scene, Prince Hal (Branagh) shows his intense link to Falstaff by conveying his lines of rejection and banishment without spoken words, choosing instead to use his facial expressions (assisted by a voice over by Branagh) to illustrate his thoughts. Falstaff's reception of Hal's non–verbal meaning shows the fact that Hal and Falstaff are linked beyond friendship and family, while the words themselves show that despite this union Hal has no qualms about using Falstaff to achieve his ends. The humanization of Falstaff changes the way we look at the character of Henry V and the production as a whole, as with Falstaff so much more pure, Henry is seen as the Machiavel he must become in order to succeed his father. The BBC versions of Henry IV parts one and two show Jack Falstaff (played by Anthony Quayle) as a different sort of character altogether. In these productions the lecherous, unhealthy, and alcoholic qualities instilled in Falstaff are accentuated to a nearly morbid respect. While, unlike Branagh, the screenwriter leaves the lines intact, those lines that commonly evoke humor tend to evoke pity, or disgust instead. Quayle's appearance is not that of a robust jester who promotes joviality and wins the affection of the audience, but rather is a sickly, fat man who drunkenly forces his words out of the side of his mouth. While this Falstaff accentuates ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
