My Story By Alicia Appleman Jurman
Those who take the time to fully examine the Holocaust, and its exemplary survivors deal with the
unsettling knowledge that those before them over looked. Between the years of 1933 to 1947, the
Holocaust prospered through many countries in Europe, including the proximity of one survivor's
homeland, Poland. Alicia: My Story by Alicia Appleman–Jurman is historically famous for it's
shocking relevance throughout its background. It has also been infamous for its brutal unvarnished
truth by well–known book reviews, but overall it's cultural impact on the world has shown it is a
lesson that should be known by all.
Before there were survivors of the appalling Holocaust, there was the emanation of this fledgling
abomination. It began in September 1st of 1939, when Nazi troops invaded Poland, and Germany
surrendered sulkingly on May 8th of 1945 ("HISTORY" 3). This kindled the tyrant Adolf Hitler to
wage two wars, and incidentally revived a new World War. The first war was against the allied
forces, Great Britain, the United States and the Soviet Union; Sadly, the other war was against the
jews, this in turn gave way to the beginning of the Holocaust (3). This was all kindled only a few
years after one survivor named Alicia Appleman–Jurman was born which made her nine years of
age at the time in Poland. Jews who collapsed under the harsh hammer of the German's control in
the Eastern and Central Europe were almost immediately belittled in every way made possible (3).

I Am Sam Psychology
I Am Sam is a touching film that incorporates psychology into modern day society into terms that
the common person could empathize with. Sam Dawson, played by Sean Penn is a mentally
challenged man raising his beloved daughter Lucy (Dakota Fanning) in the heart of Los Angeles. As
a single father, Sam has support from many of his mentally challenged friends to raise Lucy. Sam
works at the local Starbucks where his job is to bus the tables and clean up after customers. His
neighbor Annie who experiences agoraphobia and will not leave her apartment, agrees to babysit and
care for Lucy while teaching Sam the basics to parenting. As Lucy progresses in age, she fears being
smarter than her father, Lucy's increasing academic ability becomes an issue ... Show more content

According to an Oxford journal about autism, "affected children or adults almost always show
evidence of restricted imagination and predilection for rigid routines" (O'Callaghan, 2002).The need
for a set routine is demonstrated when Sam becomes extremely upset when Lucy suggests they go to
Big Boy instead of IHOP; Afterwards when he agrees to go, he starts screaming and acting out
because the restaurant did not have the same pancakes as IHOP. Also Sam and his friends have a set
weekly schedule of Wednesday at IHOP, Thursdays are movie night, and Friday is Karaoke. When
one of the plans is changed it causes high anxiety and angst among the group. "Autism spectrum
disorder is a developmental disorder that affects a persons ability to socialize and communication
with others" (NAMI, 2011). The difficulty with communication is shown throughout the movie. In
one scene, Sam was helping Lucy with her schoolwork and he came across problem could not solve
he mentally shut down and changed the subject. The absence of social normalities is shown when
baby Lucy accidentally makes a woman spill her drink, Sam then try to help the woman by picking
up ice that dropped in the woman cleavage. The unawareness of the social limitations and personal
boundaries is absent, which reinforces the diagnosis for autism. Research by the National Institute of
Neurological Disorders and Strokes concluded that "people with autism

Foul Is Fair In Macbeth
Imagine. You see your son being dragged away. There's nothing you can do about it. You reach out
to him. You're told it's for the better. You remember. Remember the times when you played with
him, watched him grow up. Anger. Anger rising that you can't stop. Angry at the government. Angry
at unfair treatment. It's unfair. It's foul. But that's not what they think, they think it's fair, that foul is
fair. You might be thinking, what is he going on about? The Stolen Generation? The treatment of
Aboriginal people? Land Rights? "Fair is Foul, Foul is Fair". It's a very tricky concept. We find it in
literature, media, political speeches and in everyday life. It is extensively explored in Shakespeare's
Macbeth, where it means that appearances are often deceptive, and that things are different than
what they appear to be. It points towards deception where appearance is not reality. Shakespeare's
Macbeth, encounters the witches and they plant the idea in his head that he deserves to be king. This
makes him vulnerable to his ambitious wife and leads to his downfall as he becomes increasingly
entangled in his own ambitious and murderous deeds. Although, in real life, it is used as a paradox, a
paradigm, a chiasmus, to criticise a person's double standards and dual personalities. It is used
against politicians who present their dual personalities to the public, motivated purely by self–
interest rather than acting for honourable or unselfish reasons. This is how the British and

I Am Proud Of You
"Mamie, can you pass me the salad?" I asked my grandmother, as we sat eating dinner together. She
immediately passed me the salad. "How was school, sugar?" she asked me. That was her nickname
for me, because when I was five, apparently I used to eat sugar right out of the sugar jar she kept in
the pantry. "It was good. I got an A in my pre–calc exam today," I replied, grinning. "Perfect," she
answered. "I 'm so proud of you, Gigi. But did those girls – Ivanna, Bess, and Emilie – bother you
again?" I hung my head. Lately, these three girls at my school had been bullying me. Being as close
to Mamie as I was, I told her about it. "Yes." She gave me a hug and kissed the top of my head.
"What they say doesn 't matter, sugar. Look at how talented you are. Have you been writing any
music lately?" "Yes!" I exclaimed. "I just finished writing my song! It 's called 'Mystical Dreams '!"
"Can I see it?" she asked. Immediately, I ran upstairs and brought her my little music notebook. I
held it out to her. "Have the new neighbors moved in yet?" I asked. She nodded. "It would be nice of
you to give them some of the crepes I made for dessert and go meet them," she suggested.
"Meanwhile, I 'll read your song." I ran to the kitchen and grabbed five crepes from the pile Mamie
had left on the stove, put on my shoes, and ran out the door. I suppose I should explain why Mamie
makes such great crepes. My family on my father 's side is French, and Mamie came to America

The Freedom Writers : `` Don 't Judge A Book `` Its Cover ``
The Freedom Writers There is a common saying, "Don't judge a book by its cover". This means that
there should be no stereotypes or standards placed on anyone or anything before all of the
information is known about that individual or item. Stereotyping is most commonly associated with
people. There are lots of different assumptions that are made about people based on their looks, and
most of the time, those assumptions are not true. The black students in this movie are portrayed as
up to no good and always involved in gang violence. Additionally, this film displays how one
person, namely Miss Gruwell, can single handedly change other people's lives. This movie draws
many parallels with the Holocaust. Adolf Hitler judged the Jews based on their appearance, and his
actions affected millions of people's lives. Thus, The Freedom Writers, similar to the Holocaust,
exemplifies that people should never be judged based on their physical appearance, and that the
actions of one person can affect other people's lives.
The Freedom Writers is about a teacher who takes on the task of educating students at a reform high
school. Initially, the students misbehave and resent Miss Gruwell, their teacher, because she does not
know what it is like to survive as a minority. But, Miss Gruwell sees the potential in her students
and finds a way to show her students that their lives could be worse. She works three different jobs
so that she can afford to buy "The Diary of Anne Frank" for them to

The Day My Family And I Moved
Fifteenth May 2014: The day my family and I moved from Chicago to London because of my Dads
promotion. I was enraged about the move though, my family were filled with outright awe. The
thought of moving to London, trying new cultures and meeting new individuals tempted them to
moving. School: Their accent and uniform – everything was odd. My brother then again delighted in
finding another nation and way of life, so he fitted in superbly. Every second was hell and the hall
possessed an aroma similar to stagnant body odor. My list of issues were endless: lack of friends,
severe bullying, Oh if you didn 't know The name Evans, Josh Evans.

completing any work , yet this didn 't trouble me at all as we getting to know each other properly. I
thought I knew a lot more about her until she blurted out with shame "I used to date Jeremy".
Jeremy is a dominant jerk. At school he would make my life hell while he would treat the school as
a kingdom under his tyrannous rule. Thoughts were racing through my mind. I could just consider
one thing to do. As I was going to say something Eva jumped from her seat into my lap and put her
lips on mine. Bang! The door viciously swung open. The other side stood my mum with milk and
cookies. "ERMM sorry to interrupt" my mum said awkwardly with a smirk. She rapidly did a U–
turn and gradually shut the door, giving me a quick wink as she did so. "I am so sorry" whispered
Eva awkwardly. Suddenly she ran out of my room in complete and utter humiliation.

Core problems There are several issues for Eddie Bauer, Inc. to tackle, low profit margin ratio, high
sales return and high inventory level, and brand positioning. Analysis of the problems Eddie Bauer
yielded the lowest net income among its competitors like The Gap, A & F and Land's End. It
achieved similar gross profit margin but got a poor performance on overall net income at 1%
because it suffered from high expenditure on SG&A in both retail and catalog operations which
accounted for 37% of its total net sales. This is extraordinary high while compared with its main
competitors like A & F, and the Gap whose SG&A amounted to 22% and 27% of their net sales
respectively (Table 1). A & F and Eddie Bauer are similar in size, ... Show more content on

We could put more women's items setup in window display at the entrance of each store. If the same
products are available in all channels, customer can shop at the stores with all sizes, style and color,
and the estimated sales will increase in retails. In addition to the promotion of women's items at
shop such as shoes, swimwear and dress would widen the choices for the customer. They could offer
crossover brand name products and sponsor the qualified and famous explorers, athletes and
celebrities to attract the customer's attention and boost up more sales. Combined with both
advertising and more items available in retail, the sales is forecast to increase at 5% for the 1st year
at $27M (Table 9) since brand building is a long term strategy and we cannot expect miracles only
after several campaigns. On I–media, Eddie Bauer should implement more promotion campaigns
and new–items launch date. It should gradually shift more information from catalog to I–Media
since its cost of developing selling information is lower than printing content for catalog. Both
professional and higher quality elements should be added to the I–Media since 50% of I–media
customers are affluent male who are looking for quality to fit their life style. To increase the brand
synergy, more women's items or feminine visuals could be added on the front page

The princess cried. The elderly woman just looked at her and held her until she calmed down.
"Now I wish you the best young princess, but I must be on my way." The elderly woman gave the
princess a hug and went on her way. As the princess dried her eyes she looked up and saw a
beautiful rainbow, "That's weird it hasn't rained" she thought to herself and continued on her walk.
She walked and walked and finally came to find a village. The princess explored this village and

A Love Story : Finding My Twin Brother
Finding My Twin Brother
The following content is not a love story about how I found my twin brother, and how we bonded.
This is the story of when I looked for something I did not want to find, someone so dark, filled with
hate, and determination to ruin my life. Some secrets are best kept hidden; One always think that the
truth will always protect us, however, sometimes knowing the truth can kill us, and perhaps this is
the reason why my parents did not want me to know. My parents always told me they loved me, so,
I had no clue why they did not want me to find him.
I had a perfect life, had loving parents, loving friends, money, and even a golden retriever called
max, who was my best friend. However, it was only a couple of years ago when we became rich, my
hard–working dad decided he would invest all his money in a solar energy company which ended up
growing, and became into a million–dollar empire. I mean what else could I ask for, I had it all. Well
maybe not all, I always wanted a brother, and every time I told my parents they just seem to get
angry and shut me out. This always made me curious, why would they get so mad, I mean perhaps,
they could not have any kids, or maybe my mother had a miscarriage, Something I thought I would
never know.
It was the first Sunday of December morning when my father asked me to take some boxes to the
basement, I had never been down there, as a kid I always thought it was scary, but know as a 19–
year–old guy, how could I say no. I went downstairs with a couple of boxes, but could not find any
place to put them. The area was a mess, so I decided that I would organize every box that was there.
While I was organizing, I notice this one box hidden in the back, so, I decided to open it. Inside the
box, there was a newspaper and a couple of burnt pictures. Therefore, I decided to read the article, I
could not understand much, it was an 18 years old newspaper, but it talked about a burning house
with two twin babies, It said that one had been saved with no harm while the other one was rescued
later on with severe burn mark. It was a miracle that other baby had survived, they called him
miracle Carlos, and his brother Richard. I stood there for a second before my brain processed

Character Analysis Of Ellen Goodman's 'The Company Man'
Is being socially disconnected from your family, being overweight, and not having any free time for

Company Man" the main character, Phil, does exactly this. Every day of his life Phil worked endless
hours causing him to be isolated from his loved ones until it eventually caught up with him. Ellen
Goodman uses this situation to criticize the idea of committing your life to a company.
Due to Phil committing his whole to his company he was long missed before he was actually gone.

only was Phil disconnected, Phil's work habits are what ultimately led him to his death. All he did

Why The Grandmother In A Good Man Is Hard To Find
Similar to every character in any given work of literature, the grandmother from "A Good Man is
Hard to Find," had several attributes, both pleasing and vexatious. Of all her many qualities, I
greatly valued her ability to consistently speak her mind, even in the face of danger. Never was she
shy to give way to her true emotions and allow those around her to view her perspective on the
events occurring within her life, a rarity in today's society. Additionally, it was made obvious how
deeply she cared for her family in her desperate attempt to persuade The Misfit to return to the
"good man" she assumed he once was and therefore permit the family to safely escape the
dangerous predicament. Likewise, the grandmother was a Christian woman that ... Show more

I felt sorrow for the children but quickly suppressed it because sorrow comes from ungratefulness

when I got close to them I heard there hearts beating slowly. I let them eat as much as they fancied

fearful innocence. They seemed so untrusting. I thought about what it might take to make a child
that young and small to lose trust. After the little one eat I gave them a bath. I can still picture the
look on there faces when they undressed in front of me. There skin was dry and there ribs exposed.
The children looked ashamed of their thin and weak bodies. Their small eyes pushed together
creating a valley of wrinkles, tears streamed out of there eyes but they made no sound. There

A Person 's Environment Is The Same Opportunity At The End...
Every person struggle is different. Some have worked sweat and tears for their achievements while
others have had things just handed to them and do not really know the struggle of hard work. Some
people work as hard as they can and at the end of the day, they still cannot seem to succeed, as they
would like to. They can work hard, live a good legal life, and yet still cannot make ends meet at the
end of the day. The film "Trading places," and the Not everybody in America has the same
opportunity to be successful because one person's environment may be much rougher than another
person environment. A person's environment is a key factor in their success. A person born into
poverty is going to have a much harder time to get ahead than a person that is born into a wealthy
family or environment. It is as if they are already in a negative situation before they even have a
chance to begin life. A person born into poverty doesn't have that extra time to do homework at
home because they might have to be home taking care of other siblings while guardians are at work.

Essay On Eddie Bauer
Eddie Bauer Case Analysis
I. Strategy Upon Emerging from Bankruptcy Protection, Key Success and Risk Factors
After emerging from bankruptcy in 2005, Eddie Bauer had to take several strategic steps to establish
an effective direction of the company and operate more successfully. Management's plan of
reorganization identified six key strategic initiatives that can be classified into two main groups. The
first component of their strategy is to improve profitability by both increasing demand through
effective marketing campaigns (brand revitalization, resizing of stores, and improving customer
experience) and cutting costs (store rationalization, increasing direct sales, and optimizing
productivity). The second component of their strategy is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Advertising expenses are included as part of SG&A in the income statement. Additionally, attracting
top management talent will further increase the company's expenditure on SG&A since they have to
incentive individuals to join such a company that has recently emerged from the bankruptcy. Based
on projections, Eddie Bauer expected that SG&A as a percentage of net sales will decrease from
37.6% in 2004 to 34.3% in 2008, indicating a deviation from economic reality, regardless of
expected operational efficiencies. Eddie Bauer would need to maintain its SG&A percentage to run
new marketing campaigns and attract top talent. Eddie Bauer may be understanding its assumptions
about how much it needs to invest to drive these strategic initiatives. Thus, it would be more
appropriate to increase SG&A to around 40% of net sales to account for these large expenditures.
Next important metric would be based on the company's intent to resize to an optimal store size of
5,500 square feet as mentioned in the case. It is helpful to compare the company's sales per square
foot with top 10 comparable companies in the retail industry to determine whether Eddie Bauer's
projections are aligned with economic reality. Eddie Bauer is approximated to have 1.975 million
square feet in retail space in 2006. Thus, Eddie Bauer should expect to attain retail

Creative Writing: Bedlam In Berlin
Ten: Bedlam in Berlin The silence in the basement was disrupted by air raid sirens which roared out
in the distance. Anna gritted her teeth and rehearsed acting brave and Willy sat still, not wanting to
move. They could hear the deafening bombs being dropped from planes overhead and carpeting the
city. The air in the basement became thick, and they, both began to cough and gasp for air. Miss
Margot and Miss Muller rushed into the tiny room and frantically handed them their shoes and
shouted, "We have to get out of here, hurry, follow us!" The children fumbled with their shoes and
as Anna clutched the stars they chased after the ladies through the dust and finally surfaced into the
hazy afternoon sunlight. As everyone glanced about in confusion they noticed that there was
scarcely a building left standing. Miss Margot was the first to speak and yelled over the bomb blasts,
"We have to head for the shelter!" Miss Muller and the children followed her around piles of debris,
through the twisted rubble cluttered streets, and down the bomb shelter's stairs. Inside everyone sat
quietly against the cool cement walls on hard wooden benches. Anna and Willy looked about the

The, A Modern Classic By Diane Samuels
How does Samuel present strong feelings in Evelyn and Helga's relationship?
Kindertransport, a modern classic by Diane Samuels, cleverly illustrates the mechanisms of a
mother/daughter relationship alongside themes of post–modernism, feminism and identity. Nine
months before the outbreak of WWII, 10 000 unaccompanied Jewish children were sent to England
as a precautionary measure due to the Kristallnacht. One of them was Eva, daughter of Helga, sent
unwillingly because of her mother's wishes to keep her alive. Presently, Evelyn is sending her
daughter to college. Old memories resurface as Evelyn is forced to confront – her childhood as Eva.
Throughout this play, Samuels presents strong feelings in Helga and Evelyn's relationship such as
loss, betrayal and guilt.
Samuels presents strong feelings in Evelyn and Helga's relationship through the idea of post–
modernism, particularly in Act 1 Scene 2. She shows that Evelyn wants to believe Helga never
existed and has locked away her past in the attic, long forgotten. When interrogated about her
childhood, she bluntly replies: 'I certainly have (forgotten).' Through her straight forward reply
Samuels shows that Evelyn believes everything that Helga once represented – her religion, beliefs
and identity – were an image drawn by everyone and everything around her. Evelyn explicitly tells
her daughter 'I have never lied to you' regarding her past. She is saying that she was never Jewish
nor German. Evelyn could be implying that identity

Rickenbacker's Accomplishments
Edward Vernon Rickenbacker, more commonly known as "Eddie", was the third of eight children,
born to William and Elizabeth Rickenbacker in Columbus, Ohio on October 8, 1890. Just as most
adolescent boys, he went through a defiant stage. As a child, he was quite the delinquent, for he
began smoking at the age of 5 and often spent time with a group of ornery kids called the
"Horsehead Gang." He was quickly whipped into shape by his father, however, who tragically died
at a construction site in 1904. Due to the absence of his father and the toll it took on his family,
Rickenbacker quit school at age 12 and brought it upon himself to assume the position as the
provider for his family. His longing for aviation did not start at this time, but during World War I.
Even so, he made his impact on history during the 20th century through his many successes in aerial
warfare.
Rickenbacker had several odd jobs before finding work in the Frayer Miller Air Cooled Car
Company. From his job of testing cars he made his way into racing. Rickenbacker's fame started
before the first world war, as he became one of the most accomplished race car drivers of his time in

Eddie Mabo Essay
Introduction Throughout Australian history, there have been men and women who fought for the
entitlements of the indigenous people. The most respected and recognised of these is Eddie Mabo, a
Torres Strait Islander. Mabo stood up for the rights of his people from a very young age all the way
to his death, in order to generate changes in the policies and laws of the government. Mabo battled
for his right to own the land which he had inherited from his adoptive father, a fight which was
resolved only after his demise. Despite this, Eddie Mabo became one of the key influential figures in

Ethics Of Torture : Who Are We Really Hurting?
Torture is a heinous crime to anyone who is put under the duress of those who either get enjoyment
or use it as a device for information gathering. In recent years it has been more in use as a focal
point with the recent killings of aid and social workers in the Middle East and travelers that enter
North Korea to state a message or obtain information. If the rules of the Geneva Convention do not
apply, then what rules do apply?
Ethics of torture: who are we really hurting?
Conflict between consequential and rights based morals theories that are not new. In 530AD was the
first recording of torture was originated, when the Roman jurists torture those who did not conform

compulsion are as likely to give false evidence as true, some being ready to endure to endure
everything rather than tell the truth, while others are really ready to make false charges against other,

Two boys were walking on the campus of Bridgeville Academy. They were each armed with a pile
of books that threatened to topple onto the well–worn paved parking lot of the school. They turned
out of the campus and began walking down the sidewalk towards home. The air was chilly and the
leaves were beginning to shed their emerald green gowns for scarlet, gold, and, fiery orange. The
boys were in good spirits and they walked briskly down the walkway. Before long, the houses had
started to get bigger and farther apart.
"Oh, no," one of the boys groaned as he stopped in his tracks.
"What is it, Jeremy? the second boy asked.
"It's the Haunted Mansion, Dave," the boy named Jeremy whispered nervously. A few houses from
where they stood was the house that many people called "The Haunted Mansion". They knew that it
wasn't really haunted, but it was hard to tell when you looked at it. The old fashioned brick house
seemed ready to topple over at any moment. The large yard was overrun with weeds. The windows
and doors were boarded over and the beat up front door was half hidden by weeds.
"I almost forgot about this place," Dave said as he walked closer to the gloomy house.
"Dave, where are you going!" Jeremy exclaimed as he sprinted to catch up with his friend. Dave had
stopped right in front of the house and stared at the unwelcoming windows. The inky black windows

Descriptive Essay About A Fair Party
Fair Party 2017 The lamp post lights are shining down on us as were sitting on benches in a little

the fair for the Loverboy and Survivor Classic Rock concert. A few hours later the concert will be
over and people will be going home. That means it's time to pull the "money trick" on people as they
leave the concert later. My friends and I are at a party at my cousins camper. "Hey guys!" said my
cousin nick and all his friends. "Hey," me, Gracie, Bekah, and Kenzie said. As they were walking
towards us you could hear the loud slurping of them all drinking their milkshakes. Nick introduced
me, Gracie and Kenzie to all his friends. His friends names were Brock, Payton, Ethan, Cody, and
Trey. After we all introduced ourselves to each other we walked over to a big area with bases. "Who
should be on each team," Nick asked. "I don't care let's just make them even," Gracie said. We all
divided ourselves up into teams and started playing. My Team was in the field while Nick's team
was up to kick. Nick was the first kicker up, and I was pitching. Gracie, Kenzie, Cody, and Ethan
were behind me getting ready for Nick to kick. I pitch nick the ball then "wham!" The kickball went
right into Gracie's face. It hit her pretty good. We took a timeout until we decided to go back to the
camper and do something else. When we got back there about a hour left until the concert was over.

How Does Sean Penn Use Film Techniques In Into The Wild
Thoreau once said "Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves" following this Chris

the wild makes use of .... to show the challenges of family relationships, the power of words and self

The director uses voice overs and cinematography perceptively to emphasise the challenges of

In the film there are many examples of where Penn has shown the power of words but one of the
main examples shown throughout the movie is when his younger sister Carnie does voice overs in

around him by a fiercely rigorous moral code. He risked what could have been a relentless lonely
path but found comfort in the character of book he loved... he could summon their words to suit any
occasion, and he would often." This displays that Chris can strongly relate to many of his favourite
authors, who have been able to capture Chris's emotions, thought and feelings in their words. An
establishing shot that also symbolises the power of words, would be when the shot of Chris is just
walked into the wild of Alaska in the opening scene. This establishing shot creates the idea of
loneliness, isolation and shows the purity in nature as he walks into the wildness. These show us
how our words can impact others in both a negative and positive

Hope Was Here Character Analysis
Have you ever faced hardship in your life but found your way through it? Well, in the novel Hope
Was Here by Joan Bauer many of the characters go through tremendous obstacles in their life but
eventually overcome them. Examples like Hope and Addie are characters in the novel that faced
struggles but both found ways to overcome them. Their struggles can even be personally related to
my life. While many people see an obstacle and run, Hope and Addie find there ways to overcome
them, and even if things do not always go as planned, things always turn out for the better.
Hope was a character in the novel Hope Was Here who showed struggles throughout the book and
overcame them. She struggled because she lived her life with a mother who was barely with her and
a father who was unknown to both Hope and her mother (Bauer 6,59). She overcame her struggle
with her mom never being there by just accepting that she wasn't the right person to be a mother and
that she would not be around much. Hope knew she would have to get used to Addie being the

Magic Realism In The Handsomest Drowned Man In The World
At its most basic level, magical realism is the mixture of the supernatural with realistic
characteristics. This genre is known for having specific traits to help classify if a work of art is in the
genre. One work of art that exemplifies almost all of these traits is "The Handsomest Drowned Man
in the World" by Gabriel García Márquez. After a washed up corpse is found in a small village, the
people of the city fall in love with the man's tallness and his handsomeness. They quickly decide to
worship him and they want to better themselves because of him. On the other hand, one example of
a misconception of magical realism is Big Fish, directed by Tim Burton. The central character,
Edward Bloom, recounts his life with exaggerated stories to his son Will, who thinks the
embellished tales are unnecessary and insulting. As his father is sick, Will travels to be with him.
During his visit, Will gets a more in–depth view of his father's real life and the truth of what his life
actually was. This film has some of the traits, but not enough to classify it as part of the magical
realism genre.
One crucial trait needed for magical realism is the idea of irreducible magic. This means magic that
cannot be normalized or reduced throughout the work of art. Big Fish very clearly breaks this
characteristic. In Edward's stories, he magnifies the sense of magic. When Ed passes away, Will
discovers that all the magic Ed encountered throughout his life was relatively normal compared to

Travel is another manner to learn about life away from usual life. Urry (1990) states that holidays,

Grabbing my coat from the couch, I walked out my front door with all the enthusiasm of a man
going to stand before a firing squad. I get in the car and Joy looks like she just saw a ghost.
"Joy what's wrong? I ask, "Are you ok, you seem like you just seen a ghost."
Joy shouts "No Matt I'm not ok, there has been a serious murder in our area recently, actually a
couple blocks away from my house, and they still have no clue who did it, and why they did."
I stare into blank space, and zone out for a bit, not hearing a word Joy says to me.
"HELLO, Matt!" Joy screams, "Do you even care!"
"Yea I do care." Joy replies "Well it doesn't really seem like it, and why are you smirking It's not
funny!"
"I'm not laughing about the murder Joy, I just thought of something funny"
Joy replies in infuriating anger "NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO THINK OF SOMETHING FUNNY,
THIS IS SERIOUS MATT!"
" Ok I understand that, but what do you want me to do about it, solve the murder? The person who
did this is

My Story By Alicia Appleman Jurman

  • 1. My Story By Alicia Appleman Jurman Those who take the time to fully examine the Holocaust, and its exemplary survivors deal with the unsettling knowledge that those before them over looked. Between the years of 1933 to 1947, the Holocaust prospered through many countries in Europe, including the proximity of one survivor's homeland, Poland. Alicia: My Story by Alicia Appleman–Jurman is historically famous for it's shocking relevance throughout its background. It has also been infamous for its brutal unvarnished truth by well–known book reviews, but overall it's cultural impact on the world has shown it is a lesson that should be known by all. Before there were survivors of the appalling Holocaust, there was the emanation of this fledgling abomination. It began in September 1st of 1939, when Nazi troops invaded Poland, and Germany surrendered sulkingly on May 8th of 1945 ("HISTORY" 3). This kindled the tyrant Adolf Hitler to wage two wars, and incidentally revived a new World War. The first war was against the allied forces, Great Britain, the United States and the Soviet Union; Sadly, the other war was against the jews, this in turn gave way to the beginning of the Holocaust (3). This was all kindled only a few years after one survivor named Alicia Appleman–Jurman was born which made her nine years of age at the time in Poland. Jews who collapsed under the harsh hammer of the German's control in the Eastern and Central Europe were almost immediately belittled in every way made possible (3). The effects were ... • 3. I Am Sam Psychology I Am Sam is a touching film that incorporates psychology into modern day society into terms that the common person could empathize with. Sam Dawson, played by Sean Penn is a mentally challenged man raising his beloved daughter Lucy (Dakota Fanning) in the heart of Los Angeles. As a single father, Sam has support from many of his mentally challenged friends to raise Lucy. Sam works at the local Starbucks where his job is to bus the tables and clean up after customers. His neighbor Annie who experiences agoraphobia and will not leave her apartment, agrees to babysit and care for Lucy while teaching Sam the basics to parenting. As Lucy progresses in age, she fears being smarter than her father, Lucy's increasing academic ability becomes an issue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to an Oxford journal about autism, "affected children or adults almost always show evidence of restricted imagination and predilection for rigid routines" (O'Callaghan, 2002).The need for a set routine is demonstrated when Sam becomes extremely upset when Lucy suggests they go to Big Boy instead of IHOP; Afterwards when he agrees to go, he starts screaming and acting out because the restaurant did not have the same pancakes as IHOP. Also Sam and his friends have a set weekly schedule of Wednesday at IHOP, Thursdays are movie night, and Friday is Karaoke. When one of the plans is changed it causes high anxiety and angst among the group. "Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disorder that affects a persons ability to socialize and communication with others" (NAMI, 2011). The difficulty with communication is shown throughout the movie. In one scene, Sam was helping Lucy with her schoolwork and he came across problem could not solve he mentally shut down and changed the subject. The absence of social normalities is shown when baby Lucy accidentally makes a woman spill her drink, Sam then try to help the woman by picking up ice that dropped in the woman cleavage. The unawareness of the social limitations and personal boundaries is absent, which reinforces the diagnosis for autism. Research by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes concluded that "people with autism ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Foul Is Fair In Macbeth Imagine. You see your son being dragged away. There's nothing you can do about it. You reach out to him. You're told it's for the better. You remember. Remember the times when you played with him, watched him grow up. Anger. Anger rising that you can't stop. Angry at the government. Angry at unfair treatment. It's unfair. It's foul. But that's not what they think, they think it's fair, that foul is fair. You might be thinking, what is he going on about? The Stolen Generation? The treatment of Aboriginal people? Land Rights? "Fair is Foul, Foul is Fair". It's a very tricky concept. We find it in literature, media, political speeches and in everyday life. It is extensively explored in Shakespeare's Macbeth, where it means that appearances are often deceptive, and that things are different than what they appear to be. It points towards deception where appearance is not reality. Shakespeare's Macbeth, encounters the witches and they plant the idea in his head that he deserves to be king. This makes him vulnerable to his ambitious wife and leads to his downfall as he becomes increasingly entangled in his own ambitious and murderous deeds. Although, in real life, it is used as a paradox, a paradigm, a chiasmus, to criticise a person's double standards and dual personalities. It is used against politicians who present their dual personalities to the public, motivated purely by self– interest rather than acting for honourable or unselfish reasons. This is how the British and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

That was her nickname for me, because when I was five, apparently I used to eat sugar right out of the sugar jar she kept in the pantry. "It was good. I got an A in my pre–calc exam today," I replied, grinning. "Perfect," she answered. "I 'm so proud of you, Gigi. But did those girls – Ivanna, Bess, and Emilie – bother you again?" I hung my head. Lately, these three girls at my school had been bullying me. Being as close to Mamie as I was, I told her about it. "Yes." She gave me a hug and kissed the top of my head. "What they say doesn 't matter, sugar. Look at how talented you are. Have you been writing any music lately?" "Yes!" I exclaimed. "I just finished writing my song! It 's called 'Mystical Dreams '!" "Can I see it?" she asked. Immediately, I ran upstairs and brought her my little music notebook. I held it out to her. "Have the new neighbors moved in yet?" I asked. She nodded. "It would be nice of you to give them some of the crepes I made for dessert and go meet them," she suggested. "Meanwhile, I 'll read your song." I ran to the kitchen and grabbed five crepes from the pile Mamie had left on the stove, put on my shoes, and ran out the door. I suppose I should explain why Mamie makes such great crepes. • 11. The Freedom Writers : `` Don 't Judge A Book `` Its Cover `` The Freedom Writers There is a common saying, "Don't judge a book by its cover". This means that there should be no stereotypes or standards placed on anyone or anything before all of the information is known about that individual or item. Stereotyping is most commonly associated with people. There are lots of different assumptions that are made about people based on their looks, and most of the time, those assumptions are not true. The black students in this movie are portrayed as up to no good and always involved in gang violence. Additionally, this film displays how one person, namely Miss Gruwell, can single handedly change other people's lives. This movie draws many parallels with the Holocaust. Adolf Hitler judged the Jews based on their appearance, and his actions affected millions of people's lives. Thus, The Freedom Writers, similar to the Holocaust, exemplifies that people should never be judged based on their physical appearance, and that the actions of one person can affect other people's lives. The Freedom Writers is about a teacher who takes on the task of educating students at a reform high school. Initially, the students misbehave and resent Miss Gruwell, their teacher, because she does not know what it is like to survive as a minority. But, Miss Gruwell sees the potential in her students and finds a way to show her students that their lives could be worse. Analysis of the problems Eddie Bauer yielded the lowest net income among its competitors like The Gap, A & F and Land's End. It achieved similar gross profit margin but got a poor performance on overall net income at 1% because it suffered from high expenditure on SG&A in both retail and catalog operations which accounted for 37% of its total net sales. They could offer crossover brand name products and sponsor the qualified and famous explorers, athletes and celebrities to attract the customer's attention and boost up more sales. Combined with both advertising and more items available in retail, the sales is forecast to increase at 5% for the 1st year at $27M (Table 9) since brand building is a long term strategy and we cannot expect miracles only after several campaigns. On I–media, Eddie Bauer should implement more promotion campaigns and new–items launch date. It should gradually shift more information from catalog to I–Media since its cost of developing selling information is lower than printing content for catalog. Oak Industries – Thursday, September 16, 2004 Tuesday, September 21, 2004 Background: Auditors have historically been more concerned with overstatements than understatements of earnings. • 23. A Love Story : Finding My Twin Brother Finding My Twin Brother The following content is not a love story about how I found my twin brother, and how we bonded. This is the story of when I looked for something I did not want to find, someone so dark, filled with hate, and determination to ruin my life. Some secrets are best kept hidden; One always think that the truth will always protect us, however, sometimes knowing the truth can kill us, and perhaps this is the reason why my parents did not want me to know. My parents always told me they loved me, so, I had no clue why they did not want me to find him. I had a perfect life, had loving parents, loving friends, money, and even a golden retriever called max, who was my best friend. However, it was only a couple of years ago when we became rich, my hard–working dad decided he would invest all his money in a solar energy company which ended up growing, and became into a million–dollar empire. I mean what else could I ask for, I had it all. Well maybe not all, I always wanted a brother, and every time I told my parents they just seem to get angry and shut me out. This always made me curious, why would they get so mad, I mean perhaps, they could not have any kids, or maybe my mother had a miscarriage, Something I thought I would never know. It was the first Sunday of December morning when my father asked me to take some boxes to the basement, I had never been down there, as a kid I always thought it was scary, but know as a 19– year–old guy, how could I say no. I went downstairs with a couple of boxes, but could not find any place to put them. The area was a mess, so I decided that I would organize every box that was there. While I was organizing, I notice this one box hidden in the back, so, I decided to open it. Inside the box, there was a newspaper and a couple of burnt pictures. Therefore, I decided to read the article, I could not understand much, it was an 18 years old newspaper, but it talked about a burning house with two twin babies, It said that one had been saved with no harm while the other one was rescued later on with severe burn mark. It was a miracle that other baby had survived, they called him miracle Carlos, and his brother Richard. I stood there for a second before my brain processed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Character Analysis Of Ellen Goodman's 'The Company Man' Is being socially disconnected from your family, being overweight, and not having any free time for yourself worth working endless hours from day to day? In the article by Ellen Goodman called "The Company Man" the main character, Phil, does exactly this. Every day of his life Phil worked endless hours causing him to be isolated from his loved ones until it eventually caught up with him. Ellen Goodman uses this situation to criticize the idea of committing your life to a company. Due to Phil committing his whole to his company he was long missed before he was actually gone. So even the children that he was somewhat around, due to his work, his children had no clue on who he really was. Furthermore, not only was Phil disconnected, Phil's work habits are what ultimately led him to his death. All he did was work never having time for himself or his family, "He worked six days a week, five of them until eight or nine at night..."(par.4). So due to his choice of work habits, he deprived him and his family of any time away from what was slowly killing him. He was such a workaholic he did not give himself time to do anything else, " He had no outside, extracurricular interests..."(par.4). It is almost as if his work hours were chosen and he was just avoiding people and any outside life he could have had away from work. All he did was stay at work, he practically lived there devoting every single hour of his life there and it was like he enjoyed it, he did not mind, "To Phil it was work...he thought it was okay though"(par.4). Why The Grandmother In A Good Man Is Hard To Find Similar to every character in any given work of literature, the grandmother from "A Good Man is Hard to Find," had several attributes, both pleasing and vexatious. Of all her many qualities, I greatly valued her ability to consistently speak her mind, even in the face of danger. Never was she shy to give way to her true emotions and allow those around her to view her perspective on the events occurring within her life, a rarity in today's society. Additionally, it was made obvious how deeply she cared for her family in her desperate attempt to persuade The Misfit to return to the "good man" she assumed he once was and therefore permit the family to safely escape the dangerous predicament. Likewise, the grandmother was a Christian woman that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Strategy Upon Emerging from Bankruptcy Protection, Key Success and Risk Factors After emerging from bankruptcy in 2005, Eddie Bauer had to take several strategic steps to establish an effective direction of the company and operate more successfully. Management's plan of reorganization identified six key strategic initiatives that can be classified into two main groups. Additionally, attracting top management talent will further increase the company's expenditure on SG&A since they have to incentive individuals to join such a company that has recently emerged from the bankruptcy. Based on projections, Eddie Bauer expected that SG&A as a percentage of net sales will decrease from 37.6% in 2004 to 34.3% in 2008, indicating a deviation from economic reality, regardless of expected operational efficiencies. Eddie Bauer would need to maintain its SG&A percentage to run new marketing campaigns and attract top talent. Eddie Bauer may be understanding its assumptions about how much it needs to invest to drive these strategic initiatives. Thus, it would be more appropriate to increase SG&A to around 40% of net sales to account for these large expenditures. Next important metric would be based on the company's intent to resize to an optimal store size of 5,500 square feet as mentioned in the case. It is helpful to compare the company's sales per square foot with top 10 comparable companies in the retail industry to determine whether Eddie Bauer's projections are aligned with economic reality. • 47. The, A Modern Classic By Diane Samuels How does Samuel present strong feelings in Evelyn and Helga's relationship? Kindertransport, a modern classic by Diane Samuels, cleverly illustrates the mechanisms of a mother/daughter relationship alongside themes of post–modernism, feminism and identity. Nine months before the outbreak of WWII, 10 000 unaccompanied Jewish children were sent to England as a precautionary measure due to the Kristallnacht. One of them was Eva, daughter of Helga, sent unwillingly because of her mother's wishes to keep her alive. Presently, Evelyn is sending her daughter to college. Old memories resurface as Evelyn is forced to confront – her childhood as Eva. Throughout this play, Samuels presents strong feelings in Helga and Evelyn's relationship such as loss, betrayal and guilt. Samuels presents strong feelings in Evelyn and Helga's relationship through the idea of post– modernism, particularly in Act 1 Scene 2. She shows that Evelyn wants to believe Helga never existed and has locked away her past in the attic, long forgotten. When interrogated about her childhood, she bluntly replies: 'I certainly have (forgotten).' Through her straight forward reply Samuels shows that Evelyn believes everything that Helga once represented – her religion, beliefs and identity – were an image drawn by everyone and everything around her. Evelyn explicitly tells her daughter 'I have never lied to you' regarding her past. She is saying that she was never Jewish nor German. Evelyn could be implying that identity ... How Does Sean Penn Use Film Techniques In Into The Wild Thoreau once said "Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves" following this Chris Mccandless adventures off into the wild on a journey to discover himself without being surrounded by a materialistic society or his family. Sean Penn delicately crafted cinematography in the film into the wild makes use of .... to show the challenges of family relationships, the power of words and self discovery. This is shown through the use of many different filming techniques to emphasise a certain theme. The director uses voice overs and cinematography perceptively to emphasise the challenges of family relationships. In the film before Chris and his sister Carnie go to the lunch with his parents he reads her a poem– "She's the wrong woman, he's the wrong man. You are going to do bad things to children, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the film there are many examples of where Penn has shown the power of words but one of the main examples shown throughout the movie is when his younger sister Carnie does voice overs in the film. One of the main examples of this is when she said this "Chris measured himself and those around him by a fiercely rigorous moral code. He risked what could have been a relentless lonely path but found comfort in the character of book he loved... he could summon their words to suit any occasion, and he would often." This displays that Chris can strongly relate to many of his favourite authors, who have been able to capture Chris's emotions, thought and feelings in their words. An establishing shot that also symbolises the power of words, would be when the shot of Chris is just walked into the wild of Alaska in the opening scene. This establishing shot creates the idea of loneliness, isolation and shows the purity in nature as he walks into the wildness. These show us how our words can impact others in both a negative and positive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Well, in the novel Hope Was Here by Joan Bauer many of the characters go through tremendous obstacles in their life but eventually overcome them. Examples like Hope and Addie are characters in the novel that faced struggles but both found ways to overcome them. Their struggles can even be personally related to my life. While many people see an obstacle and run, Hope and Addie find there ways to overcome them, and even if things do not always go as planned, things always turn out for the better. Hope was a character in the novel Hope Was Here who showed struggles throughout the book and overcame them. She struggled because she lived her life with a mother who was barely with her and a father who was unknown to both Hope and her mother (Bauer 6,59). She overcame her struggle with her mom never being there by just accepting that she wasn't the right person to be a mother and that she would not be around much. Hope knew she would have to get used to Addie being the mother figure in her life which was not a big challenge for her. Overcoming the absence of her father was harder for Hope then overcoming her struggles with her mom. Hope knew that her father was out there somewhere and that he was the perfect father she had daydreamed about. She would cut out pictures of men that she imagined her father would look like. She also made scrapbooks including details about their life and pictures of their constant ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Magic Realism In The Handsomest Drowned Man In The World At its most basic level, magical realism is the mixture of the supernatural with realistic characteristics. This genre is known for having specific traits to help classify if a work of art is in the genre. One work of art that exemplifies almost all of these traits is "The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World" by Gabriel García Márquez. After a washed up corpse is found in a small village, the people of the city fall in love with the man's tallness and his handsomeness. They quickly decide to worship him and they want to better themselves because of him. On the other hand, one example of a misconception of magical realism is Big Fish, directed by Tim Burton. The central character, Edward Bloom, recounts his life with exaggerated stories to his son Will, who thinks the embellished tales are unnecessary and insulting. As his father is sick, Will travels to be with him. During his visit, Will gets a more in–depth view of his father's real life and the truth of what his life actually was. This film has some of the traits, but not enough to classify it as part of the magical realism genre. One crucial trait needed for magical realism is the idea of irreducible magic. This means magic that cannot be normalized or reduced throughout the work of art. Big Fish very clearly breaks this characteristic. In Edward's stories, he magnifies the sense of magic. When Ed passes away, Will discovers that all the magic Ed encountered throughout his life was relatively normal compared to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Urry (1990) states that holidays, tourism, and travel "are consumed because they supposedly generate pleasurable experiences which are different from those typically encountered in everyday life." The director John Landis demonstrates it in his movie "Coming to America" with Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, and Eddie Murphy (Akeem) as the principal character. Eddie Murphy is a young prince from one of the African Kingdom who wants to experience something different in the United States from what he has been experiencing until his 21–year–old birthday and before his get married. Akeem is experiencing a new lifestyle by getting an apartment in a very dirty building and losing all his items of luggage that were stolen by the poor people of the neighborhood. As he hears the neighbors are making noises; he talks also louder to express his happiness and his viewpoint as his neighbors in the building. He claims, "I am a life," Descartes express this as, "I think therefore I am." The director paints here the difference between of life between his journey and in his kingdom where he could not totally express himself in front of his father the king. "I am a life." This phrase indicates also that this journey is a way to find his own path as until now he is living under the rule of his royal parent. • 78. A Narrative Story : A Story Of A Narrative Story Narrative Story It all began with a simple Phone call one night after dinner. "Matt," my Father Hollered up the stairs, "it's for you. It's Joy, and she sounds upset." As I came downstairs to pick up the phone, I was not happy. I was tired and had looked forward to a nice quiet evening at home, not another stupid adventure with Joy. Thirty minutes later, however, Joy's silver Mustang convertible swung into our driveway, and Joy was leaning on the horn before the car came to a full stop. Grabbing my coat from the couch, I walked out my front door with all the enthusiasm of a man going to stand before a firing squad. I get in the car and Joy looks like she just saw a ghost. "Joy what's wrong? I ask, "Are you ok, you seem like you just seen a ghost." Joy shouts "No Matt I'm not ok, there has been a serious murder in our area recently, actually a couple blocks away from my house, and they still have no clue who did it, and why they did." I stare into blank space, and zone out for a bit, not hearing a word Joy says to me. "HELLO, Matt!" Joy screams, "Do you even care!" "Yea I do care." Joy replies "Well it doesn't really seem like it, and why are you smirking It's not funny!" "I'm not laughing about the murder Joy, I just thought of something funny" Joy replies in infuriating anger "NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO THINK OF SOMETHING FUNNY, THIS IS SERIOUS MATT!" " Ok I understand that, but what do you want me to do about it, solve the murder? The person who did this is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
