2. Unfaithful…
The song was released in 2006 from the album ‘ A girl like me’
The lyrics is about a woman who regrets cheating on her partner.
"Unfaithful" is a pop ballad , that contains R&B elements, and was
inspired by the works of American rock band Evanescence.
The music video was directed by Anthony. It features Rihanna in a love
triangle in which she struggles to choose between her romantic interest
and her lover, and regrets having cheated on the former.
3. Narrative
The Music video is based on a narrative. It tells a story
about a woman (the artist) Falling in love with another
man and not wanting to break her current boyfriends
heart. Rihanna is challenging the stereotypes seen I
most music video’s where the woman is the one that is
heartbroken.
4. Genre
Follows the conventions of a slow love song which is
generally a piano acoustic. Locations such as an empty
theatre is used. This could represent the emotions running
through her for example confusion, regret etc.
5. Relationship between lyrics and visuals
There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. This is
shown where Rihanna says ‘I don’t want to do this anymore’ it cuts
to Rihanna looking back at her new lover regretting what she did and
also thinking.
Another example is when she says ‘I say I won't be long
Just hanging with the girls, a lie I didn’t have to tell’. We see
Rihanna texting her new boyfriend about meeting up for a date. This
emphasises the fact that she is cheating.
6. Relationship between Music and
visuals
Although the music is not fast paced there are fast cuts cutting from
Rihanna with her new lover to her singing on stage. The music
instrumental makes use of the piano and there are shots in the music
video showing her lover playing the piano. The lighting used in each
shot represents her emotions at a particular moment. For example the
use of dark lights when she is with her new lover compared to bright
and natural lights used with her lover.
7. Demand for close ups
Close up’s are an important for establishing new
Artists. This creates a connection between the artist
and the audience. Making eye contact is also
effective as it creates a sense of realism in which the
audience is in the artists shoes.
8. Voyeurism
Voyeurism is used throughout the music video. This is done
through the use of camera work focusing on Rihanna touching
her self in a sexual way and the idea of the male gaze. The
audience are forced to view Rihanna in a sexualised manner.
For female R&B artist the idea of voyeurism is important as
sex sells in the music industry.
