The Sinking Of The Titanic In Futility By Jackie Robinson
Because the book Futility was written over 14 years prior to the sinking of Titanic, there is a lot of
controversy and mystery surrounding it. There are so many questions left unanswered, or were they?
When Robinson wrote the book, how did he come up with the idea of a ship hitting an iceberg and
then sinking? How did he design the Titan to almost be the same as the Titanic? How are then
names so similar? When Robinson wrote the book, did he know of the plans to build the Titanic.
These and so many other questions have been asked over and over again. One theory is that
Robinson was clairvoyant, and could see the future. He even has a small following of people that
believe that he was some sort of profit. If this theory was true, then

The Andrea Doria And The Collisions Of The Andrea Doria
The night of July 25, 1956 the Stockholm, a Swedish passenger liner, collided into the Andrea
Doria, Italian luxury liner, south of Nantucket. The collision claimed 46 lives onboard the Andrea
Doria and five lives onboard the Stockholm. This was the world's first RADAR assisted collision at
sea (Halpern, 2008). However, the collision was not caused by a RADAR malfunction. The collision
was a result from the incompetence of the crew with the RADAR and the overall misconduct of the
crew. The fog was very dense around the Andrea Doria as it traveled west at 267 degrees true with a
speed of 21.8 knots (Halpern, 2008). The master of the Andrea Doria, Captain Piero Calamai, made
all preparations necessary for navigation in fog (Halpern, 2008). This included additional lookouts
on the bow and in the bridge, watertight doors closed, extra men on standby in the engine room, and
a fog whistle sounding. Once the Nantucket lightship was detected on the RADAR dead ahead,
Capt. Calamai ordered course change to 261 degrees to pass about a mile and half south of the light
ship (Halpern, 2008). The Stockholm was running at 18.5 knots eastbound toward the Nantucket
Shoals lightship at 090 degrees true, in a visibility of about 5 miles (Halpern, 2008). The Stockholm
planned to go north towards Nova Scotia before heading across the Atlantic to Sweden. However,
the master of the Stockholm, Captain Gunnar Nordenson, believed it was safer to meet the
westbound traffic head on rather than

The Titanic : The Story Of The Titanic
The Titanic, the pride and joy of the White Star Line and, at the time, the largest moving object ever
built. She was the most luxurious liner of her era, named the "ship of dreams". This legendary ship
was known to be unsinkable, until April 15 1912. It is commonly believed that this "unsinkable"
ship hit an iceberg that night and sank in the northern atlantic. But how is this possible? On a night
with perfect weather and prior warning about the dangers of ice ahead? Maybe this isn't what
happened. Maybe it wasn't the titanic that sank, maybe it was its sister ship the olympic. The
olympic was completed may 31, 1911 it was ordered by the company white star lines but it was built
by the shipbuilding company, Harland and Wolff. The olympic was captained by Edward Smith and
made its maiden voyage on may 31, 1911. The olympic was a very expensive ship costing white star
lines about 7.5 million dollars. The ship left southampton and arrived in new york on june 21. When
the ship was in new york there was an incident with the tugboat, O.L Hollenbeck, the tugboat
collided with the ship and slightly damaged the stern of the ship. This was the first of a few
casualties that lead to the abating of the stability of this once strong ship. Three months later the
olympic was in another accident, but this time the damage was not minor. The Olympic collided
with the HMS Hulk off the isle of wight on september 20, 1911. The Olympic acquired two large
holes, one above the waterline of

Hypocrisy In Tom Sawyer Finn
Even if twain is cutting in his dismissive attitude toward abstract social causes that involve
hypocrisy, he sees it as an inevitable and condonable aspect of life in a community. Adults fail to
follow through on their word regarding the several adventures Tom undertakes that involve his
leaving the village. In running away to Jackson's Island, getting lost in the cave, and tracking down
Injun Joe's treasure, Tom and his friends break serious rules, yet in each case the villagers welcome
the children home again without punishing them. The adults can hardly be condemned for their
hypocrisy in desiring the children's safety, which underscores Twain's belief in the ultimate
goodness of community. The individual who does deserve punishment in the ... Show more content

Challenger Shuttle System Essay
The failure of the shuttle system is attributed to flaws in the SRM AFJ of the starboard SRB. The
smoke observed puffing from this location, which resulted from the combustion of grease, joint
insulation and the two O–rings that serve as the joint seal, indicated a seal failure at this joint (8).
This failure, while rooted in design flaw, was likely worsened in flight due to joint separation from
initial launch forces experienced on the pad, as well as through high wind shear effects. The flame
that eventually burned its way through the seals at this location 58 seconds into the flight was
deflected by the aerodynamic slipstream into the side of the ET. This flame quickly burned through
the ET and contacted the LH2, leading to the termination of flight as previously described (9).
The AFJ, as well as all other field joints on the SRB, consisted of a tang and clevis joint, which was
secured by numerous pins and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On 27 January 1986, Thiokol engineers based in Utah expressed concern regarding the weather
forecast at KSC, which was calling for temperatures below 30 degrees Fahrenheit. The lowest
temperature NASA had launched a shuttle in was 53 degrees Fahrenheit, and Thiokol engineers did
not recommend launching below that temperature as it was outside the design limits of the program
(15). More specifically, many of the engineers believed this would compromise the O–ring's sealing
ability and lead to a loss of life and orbiter (16). Thiokol managers backed their engineers and
strongly urged NASA to postpone the launch until warmer conditions. NASA, however, did not see
the engineers' concerns as a valid reason to delay the launch, as Thiokol engineers did not have hard
data to quantify these concerns. NASA indirectly pressured Thiokol to approve the launch since they
could not prove it was unsafe to launch, and the issue was not conveyed to higher management in
NASA following the conversation

Explain Why Was The Us Involved In Ww1
Why the US was involved in World War 1 World War 1 was supposed to be the war to end all wars.
The United States was not planning on entering the war until Great Britain made them mad. The
United states were involved in World War 1 because of the sinking of the Lusitania vessel,
Investment in money, and German Atrocities in Belgium. The sinking of the Lusitania was one of
the first reasons that the United States were involved in the war. On May 7, 1915 Great Britain sunk
the Lusitania. British ships were called in to action during the war to restore U–boat losses. The
Lusitania was the sister to the Titanic. The ship was transporting 1,959 civilians, substantial cargo
and munitions. The ship left from New York on May 1st 1915 and was headed

On the lower Mississippi River on March 19, 1968 around 0340 the SS African collided with the
Midwest Cities, a towing vessel, which was transporting two tank barges. The front barge was the
Intercity no. 14 and the rear was the Intercity no. 11. Intercity no. 11 was loaded with 19,000 barrels
of crude oil. The crude oil's combustible vapors escaped during the collision and led to a serious
shipboard fire on the SS African Star. The SS African Star was headed downstream at a 140 degree
true course at about 16 knots. The Midwest Cities was at about 320 degrees going 6 knots upstream.
The two vessels were closing in on each other at about 22 knots. Despite the darkness, the visibility

Intercity no. 11 barge on the side at about a 45 degree angle. The collision caused the steel hulls of
the two vessels to rub against each other and create sparks and heat from the friction. These sparks
and heat could have potentially been the ignition source of the fire. The crude oil had an estimated
flashpoint of 80 degrees Fahrenheit meaning the oil was a grade C flam¬mable liquid. Fire and
explosions started in the first few minutes on Intercity no. 11. The Midwest Cities immediately went
full astern to get away from the fire and Intercity no. 14 drifted away. The Intercity no. 11 grounded
and sank. The vapors from the escaped crude oil were blown over the African Star's bow and
ignited. The flames spread throughout the ship. The fire was in hold 2, 4, and 5. The paint was
burning and the supplies and cargo on deck was also on fire. The smoke was very thick and it filled
a large portion of the ship, including the engine space and living quarters. The pilot decided the best
option was to run the vessel aground to aid in the firefighting and rescue operations. There was
burning oil around the vessel in the water. Some people tried to jump overboard but they would land
in the fires. Many people tried to escape out the port holes due to the fact that they were trapped in
their room. Many people's life jackets and clothing caught on fire and they burned. Ropes on the life
boats had burned, which made evacuation difficult.

Leadership Qualities Of The Great Leaders Of Our Time
"Anyone can steer the ship, but it takes a Leader to chart the course" (Maxwell viii). Leadership.
This concept has created many debates throughout history. What does it take to be classified as a
great leader? What intangible characteristics are inherent to the great leaders of our time? Why have
so many failed when put into a leadership role? During my 27 plus years in the military and over 20
years in the construction industry, I have been exposed to a wide variety of leaders and their
leadership style. These examples have demonstrated to me that there are just as many bad as good.
My journey down this path of growth has enlightened my awareness of realization that not everyone
can be a leader and it takes hard work to be a successful leader. Never in my wildest dreams would I
have envisioned where I am today. Navy Boot Camp, 1987, Orlando, Florida. Laying in a bunk bed

trying desperately to get some sleep before our first full day. The anticipation was as thick as a
morning fog rolling in on the eastern seaboard. Every tick–tock of the wall mounted clock could be
heard over the thunderous snoring from a dude at the other end of the compartment. I had no idea

Naval Warfare Changes
Naval warfare has been adapting and changing to the technology of the time all throughout the ages.
Since the very first battles in the Aegean Sea, between Greek galleys, to today's massive aircraft
carriers, destroyers, and submarines; each technological step has been taken to try to outdo the
opponent. One major step that naval warfare took was the transition from large numbers of muzzle
loading cannons on either side of the ship to turret guns. The transition from forty to fifty guns
cannons to twelve big guns at the most, had substantial impacts on several aspects of naval
operations. New changes in tactics had to be made to facilitate the use of only a few guns that could
point only one direction at a time. Maritime strategies had to be adjusted to compensate for the
newer, bigger, faster, and more power ships. Procedures had to be changed to make manning the
guns a specific job, but the biggest impact that the implementation ... Show more content on

It enabled warships to locate enemy aircraft and ships at night, through clouds, and at great
distances. Improved gun directors were developed at about the same time. They tracked moving
aircraft and directed gunfire at them. Gun directors were used with proximity fuses. These fuses
exploded a shell as it neared its target and eliminated the need for a direct hit (Polmar)."
Technology always has and always will adapt to the tools of the war at hand. The tool of war that
caused a significant amount of technology adaptation was the gun turret, which caused new steps to
be taken in the fields of radar, automation, and ammunition specialization. That is how the gun
turret impacted technology at sea. The changes in the tools of war have always caused several
impacts on war itself. In the case of gun turrets, tactics and technology had to make large changes in
order to compensate for the shift in power that it caused. That is how gun turrets impacted naval and

Space Shuttle Challenger Research Paper
The Space Shuttle Challenger was originally a test vehicle for the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA). In 1979, NASA ordered Challenger to be converted to a space–rated
orbiter, which consisted of massive disassembly and restructuring of the orbiter. It was delivered
back to NASA as the second orbiter in their fleet of Space Shuttles in July 1982, where it was
launched on its first mission on 4 April 1983. Crew members conducted the first spacewalk of the
Space Shuttle program on this mission, and subsequent missions saw many other firsts for space
exploration history (1). Over Challenger's lifetime of three years, nine missions of various basis
were successfully completed (2).

Initial thrust built up while the shuttle was secured to the launch pad, and it was released without
issue and traveled upward as designed (5). No issues were noticed by the crew, officials, or
observers at the time of launch. Subsequent review of camera footage, however, reveals smoke
emanating at a cyclic rate of approximately 4 puffs per second from the aft field joint (AFJ) on the
right SRB. As the shuttle left the launch pad, the smoke dissipated from view. The next 55 seconds
occurred without issue for Challenger. All systems worked as programmed; notably, the automated
guidance system was particularly active on this flight due to record high wind shears experienced by
the shuttle, yet continued to be very effective. At 58.788 seconds after launch, flame appeared at the
same location on the starboard SRB's AFJ as the smoke had at launch. This flame continued to
spread to the external tank (ET) connection ring, then to the ET itself. It breached the ET, which
housed liquid hydrogen (LH2) and liquid oxygen (LO2) fuel for the shuttle's main engines. A large,
visible flash surrounded the stern of the shuttle system, all while the crew carried out normal
navigational maneuvers. The shuttle's engines shut down 73.5 seconds after launch due to lack of
fuel, and all signals were lost at 74 seconds following a bright flash around the nose of the ET and

How Did The Vikings Barbarians
The Vikings are commonly known as barbarians, evil, sometimes even marauders. However, the
Vikings didn't just raid prospering villages or monasteries. They also spent a lot of time exploring
overseas. While the rest of Europe was squabbling over what land belongs to who, the Vikings were
isolated, all alone on their three little peninsulas. This left them plenty of time to expand their
knowledge on ships and navigation. It also led them to bring ships into their culture. Viking long–
ships were lean, speedy, lightweight ships that could easily cut through the most vicious waves that
the ocean could throw at them. The Norse people were separated from mainland Europe by the
North Sea. As their nation advanced they built longships and started exploring the ocean. "The
Viking longboat was the key to the Vikings success in traveling." (Legends and Chronicles,
Paragraph 14). This made the long–ship a very valuable and important asset to the Vikings. The
longships were so fast and nimble, they were great for transportation of soldiers and merchandise. At
the time, no other civilization had been able to achieve such an amazing naval feat. this gave the
Vikings a great advantage over medieval combat, political affairs, and even the trading industry. ...

Instead of using a saw to split the wood, they would use their axes. The Vikings would firmly attach
the planks to the sides of the keel by employing strong iron nails as a fastener. Unlike many of the
ships in that age, the Vikings would use the "clinker" method, . The Viking's unconventional
"clinker" method included overlapping the planks one after another to create a smooth exterior for
the ship. One clever way of preventing leaks was, to dip a wool string in tar and force it "between
the planks to prevent leaks." After securing a good exterior and leak–proof sides, the Vikings would
then attach floor boards and rowing benches to the

yes. We went by tour bus; on the way, I played games on my phone, talked with siblings and church

where blue chairs lined the walls of the rooms inside. I chose a seat on the starboard side, quite
close to the metal railings that bordered the walls of the boat. My little sister sat next to me, her
smiling face bursting with excitement. I felt a little jerk, and the boat started moving and the
thundering falls grew closer. Though I was warned not to stand up, I got excited and rushed out of
my seat, eager to see the falls. My hands grabbed the railings as I watched the roaring waters go

winds whipped up, and it started pouring. I started to regret staying outside and started slowly
making my back to my seat. The boat lurched to the starboard side, and I slid back to the railing. My
sister, the only other person nearby, screamed as she jerked forward, her seatbelt stopping her from
flying into the water. I slowly got up but the boat lurched to the other side and I went flying forward,
my head hitting a chair. Clutching my head, my vision dimmed and I went flying towards the railing
again. Horrified, I suddenly realized that I missed the metal bar entirely and was actually hurtling
towards the water. On impact, my body instinctively curled into a ball. I fought to reach the surface,
but the water from the falls was pushing me down. When my head last broke the surface, I saw
many more people in the place where I fell out. They were probably the people from the inside, who

Analyzing Herman Melville's Writing Style
Every writer has their own writing style; for example, Herman Melville's style can be explained
using complex diction, lengthy syntax, repeated ideas, description and characterization. First off,
Melville can use simple words like, "cautiously," "animation," and "excited," (Melville 3&4) but he
mainly uses complex words such as, "countenance," "inarticulate," and "convulsively" (3&4).
Furthermore, Melville seems to be very fond of using long sentences such as,
Receiving the topmaul from Starbuck, he advanced towards the mainmast with the hammer uplifted
in one hand, exhibiting the gold with the other, and with a high raised voice exclaiming:
"Whosoever of ye raises me a white–headed whale with a wrinkled brow and a crooked jaw;
whosoever ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Do ye know the white whale then, Tash?" ' (5). He most likely including shorter sentences because
usually when people are talking to one another, they aren't yelling full paragraphs for every thought.
To further evaluate Melville's writing, he also uses a lot of repeated words in order to get his point
across. For example, on page one he uses "pacing," "tread," "stride," and "rounds" to describe the
frantic movements of Ahab, however it could also be taken as Ahab's thoughts running chaotically
through his mind. Later on, it goes to say that Ahab "feels, feels, feels," as proof that Ahab thinks
with his heart and not his head. In addition, he also uses parallel structure to strengthen his writing
style. For example, he says "Cut your seizings and draw the poles, ye harpooneers!" (11). Another
example of parallel structure was, "There's a most special, a most cunning, oh, a most malicious
difference!" (13), he used parallel structure to create a more uniformed and strong writing style.
Lastly, Melville uses literary devices to make his writing style more interesting. One example of the
literary devices he uses is description. A descriptive sentence would

Carnival Cruise Lines Case Study
Another corporation that turned into a learning organization is Carnival Cruise Lines, after the Costa
Concordia accident. There are several mistakes that occurred in succession to cause the events to
unfold as they did. The captain's first decision was to get close to the shore of Giglio as a "salute" to
the island, something that he had successfully accomplished several times. This would have been
another successful salute, but the Costa Concordia was moving too fast for getting so close to shore.
While the captain had consulted radar and maps, he seems to have been navigating based on what he
could actually observe by looking, which was his second mistake. His third error was something
that many people do: he was talking on the phone while driving. The captain's next mistake came
out of confusion, perhaps due to the bottle of wine he consumed with dinner. He began his turn
away from the shore by calculating the distance from a set of rocks that lay about 900 yards off the
harbor. He did not see another rock that was even closer. It was not until they had turned that he saw
the huge rock below them. He ordered another turn, this time away from the rock. The bow and
midsection cleared the rock, but the stern hit the rocks. "The problem was that I went to starboard
trying to avoid it, and that was the mistake, because I should not have gone starboard," Schettino
told prosecutors. "I made an imprudent decision. Nothing would have happened if I had not set the

The Case Of The Securities And Exchange Commission Essay
Senators Tammy Baldwin (D–WI) and Jeff Merkley (D–OR) introduced Bill S.2720 on March 17,
2016, which if enacted and implemented into law would be called the Brokaw Act. Currently, the
Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) requires beneficial owners to file for ownership and
disclose their ownership interests if he/she owns more than 5% of a registered class of security
equity within 10 days. However, the Brokaw Act would reduce this disclosure period from 10 to 2
business days and require short interests disclosures pertaining to the security. Further, the Act
would amend the SEC's current definition of beneficial ownership from just ownership over
securities with voting rights to an individual who has monetary or indirect monetary interest in the
equity. The Act also broadens the definition of security ownership from an individual owner to
include individuals acting as managers of transactions of the security, who have influence over
management and who assist the individual 'beneficial owner'. Finally, the proposed act has received
strong opposition from Activist Investors while Issuers, Shareholders, Pro–Business Conservatives
and Corporate Board Members equally propose it.
PURPOSE

York based Fund Company closed a paper mill that was responsible for most of the town's job

Essay on The Sinking of the Lusitania
The Sinking of the Lusitania On the 7 May 1915 at 14:30, then 240 metre long and 27 meter wide
ship the Lusitania sunk to the sea bed. Despite the fact that so many were killed, 1,195 people, this
ship has not become one of history's most well known vessels, unlike the Titanic. This is due to the
fact that the Lusitania was sunk by the Germans during the First World War. The Lusitania and her
sister ship, the Mauretania, were built by John Brown & CO Ltd in Glasgow for the purpose of
winning back the Blue Riband, an award to ships crossing the Atlantic ocean in the quickest time. *

Ships that came later, the Titanic included, could only reach speeds of 22 knots, however in these
cases speed was compromised by concentrating more on comfort and luxury; perhaps more
importantly the Lusitania was built for use in war. The Lusitania left Liverpool on the 7 September

Is RMS Lusitania a Conspriacy or Not?
Probably the most important incident happened on 7th May 1915 when the British passenger liner
RMS Lusitania were sank by German U–20 led by Capitan Walther Schweiger with one torpedo hit
and a second explosion triggered by coal dust and other explosives within 18 minutes. About a
thousand people lost their life, among them about 100 Americans. Hence American protest were
quite sharp and this incident dragged the United States into the war. However the incident itself
contains some unexplained mysteries, such as being slowed down and abandoned by escorts in the
war zone declared by German Empire. Thus, many people argue that the sink of RMS Lusitania is
actually a conspiracy made by the British and American government instead of an accident.
Personally however, I believe that it is a true accident. The reason is threefold: The structure of the
lower deck is suspicious; the course of RMS Lusitania is fixed; the description of the sinking written
by Capitan Walther Schweiger is trustworthy. First, while regarding the technical prints of RMS
Lusitania's lower deck, it is not hard to find where the boiler rooms are located. The second floor of
the lower deck is almost fulfilled with giant boiler rooms, and they are surrounded with coal
storages in order to load up coal and refuel the hungry coal–fired boilers. Beside the rear boiler
rooms is where the cargos located. Coal dust is explosive, hence the explosion blast of the torpedo
trigger a second wave of explosion, which

Informative Essay About Canoeing
Canoeing is fun! It's fun on your own, and it's fun with one or two friends or family members. Most
standard canoes, though, at fourteen to eighteen feet in length, cannot comfortably accommodate
more than three passengers. A beginner's initial experience with canoeing should be on a calm pond
or lake, or a calm stretch of river. If it's especially windy, or the lake is crowded with powerboat
users and jetskiers, the experience may not be as much fun and the beginning canoeist may become
frustrated. In addition, a beginner shouldn't try canoeing the first time on his or her own. While
piloting a canoe on one's own can easily be accomplished once one has some paddling experience,
it's best to gain that experience with another person, hopefully someone who's paddled a canoe
before. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The J–stroke is the bow stroke with one crucial addition – at the end of the stroke, give the blade a
quarter twist so that it's perpendicular to the water's surface, and give a little push to the outside – if
you're paddling on the portside, your stroke will resemble a "J." You'll feel the canoe move a bit to
the portside when you do this. When starting from a stop, the turning of the canoe will be more
exaggerated, as will be the return swing from the "J," but once the canoe's underway and moving
well, the swings from port to starboard and back will become less noticeable and the canoe will be
moving more smoothly. Some canoeists, rather than giving that little push at the end of the J–stroke,
will just hold the paddle in the water with the blade turned, giving a rudder effect to the end of the
stroke. This is useful, especially on long trips when you want to conserve your strength (code for
"you're tired"). The drawback is that by the time the canoe straightens out, it's started to slow down.

Nine Foot Tall Conning Tower Descriptive Writing
The sub crews like a herd of monkeys rushes out from the tower hatch quickly and drop the

The Sinking of the Titanic in Dusk to Dawn by Dr. Paul J....
The sinking of the luxurious Titanic was a traffic disaster that could have been avoided. Dr. Paul J
Quinn stated in his book Dusk to Dawn " The Titanic had actually been designed to carry forty–
eight lifeboats but was rejected because it made the deck look cluttered"(11). The sinking could
have been avoided if the Titanic crew had not over estimated its strength, and had listened carefully
to the warnings of numerous other ships, and if the crew managed the rescue efforts into the
lifeboats correctly. The Titanic held 2,200 people, yet it only held enough lifeboats for 1,100 people,
which made the rescue efforts were not followed by procedure. The Titanic was originally designed
to hold 48 lifeboats but the designer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There was no consistency in loading the lifeboats because when they put them on the deck they only
put them on one side of the boat. So a mans life depended on which side of the boat he was on. As
the crewmembers loaded people on the rescue boats the women and childrenwere allowed to go
first, but some of the crew jumped on these lifeboats as they were set off. This tragedy could have
been avoided if the crew had not over estimated the largest ship in the world, built by a work force
of 17,000 people. The designers and crew overlooked many details on the ship knowing that if this
ship had ever sunk that they would not be ready for the rescue. The Titanic was considered
unsinkable by just about everyone, including Paul Smith the captain of the boat. The crew and the
builders of this ship had considered no worries about the Titanic, so they were not fully planned for
this destruction (Ballard 11). The radio workers for the Titanic were not even on twenty–four hour
surveillance. The workers of the ship thought that they did not need them there because they thought
that nothing could go wrong. There was a "…planned preparation rescue effort"(The Titanic)
that was meant for the crewmembers to go through many times. This preparation effort was only
gone through one, the day before the maiden voyage. If the workers would of considered the
massive Titanic as any other boat, they might have taken the correct precautions and more people

The Titanic Essay
The Titanic – History of a Disaster On April 14,1912 a great ship called the Titanic sank on its
maiden voyage. That night there were many warnings of icebergs from other ships. There seems to
be a conflict on whether or not the warnings reached the bridge. We may never know the answer to
this question. The greatest tragedy of all may be that there were not enough lifeboats for everyone
on board. According to Walter Lord, author of The Night Lives On, the Titanic could have been
saved in the very beginning of the crisis when the iceberg was first reported to the bridge. If First
Officer Murdoch had steamed right at the iceberg instead of trying to avoid it, he might have saved
the ship. The author feels there would have been a loud ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Captain was going to have to make a choice as to who would be the first allowed on the
lifeboats. Around 12:30 a.m. the bridge informed the crew that only women and children would be
loaded on the lifeboats (Eaton,Haas,152). By 1:30 a.m., there was panic among some of the
passengers. One example was on the port side of the boat. A group of passengers threatened to jump
into a boat full of passengers. To scare them, one of the officers fired three shots on the ship's side.
The warning proved to be successful. Nobody was injured and the passengers calmed down (Eaton
and Haas 154). At the last moments with only forty seven available spaces on the last lifeboat, the
crew instructed everyone to form a circle around the boat. Women and children were the only
people permitted to pass through the circle. A little while after the last lifeboat left, the stern lifted
clear out of the water with more than 1500 people still on board (Eaton and Haas 157–161). The
climatic moment came at 2:20 a.m. The Titanic stood perpendicular to the water. As people in the
lifeboats looked on, they noticed the ship stayed perpendicular for a minute and then disappeared to
the bottom of the ocean (Lord, Lives on 137). Captain Rostron of the ship Carpathia determined the
distance to the Titanic and quickly calculated the course to answer the Titanic's distress call

Port des Cannes, France Marci awoke at dawn, ready to jump back into life and sail down the coast

who thought the new manners of navigating were a bunch of rubbish. He still believed in the old
seaman's way of navigating––piloting with chart, parallel rules and dividers. He used a hand bearing
compass, pointed at a lighthouse or some other landmark and looked across the lubber's line into the
bowl, taking bearings of two or more objects, and reading the direction or bearing of that object, off
of the compass. Then, he plotted them onto his chart. Where the lines crossed, was where he was. It
was that simple. The GPS was for his clients. It made them feel better, not him. As he guided the
boat out of the bay, they passed a tall white port marker at the end of the western breakwater. He

Creative Story : A Short Story
"All that lead we hung off her bottom is good for something, eh, Jipper? Hang on, boy!" Nick cried.
"I'll think of something!" But what, his mind answered, whatever could he do? He knew that the
next wave they took broadside would be their last. He fought the tiller, determined to get the
towering waves on Petrel 's stern. It was his only chance.
Just at that moment Petrel was lifted high above a cavernous trough by the hand of another huge
wave. For a brief moment, Nick could see most of the northern tip of his island. And he knew in that
instant what he had to do. There was no escaping to windward of the Gravestone Rock. Since Petrel
could never make headway back into the teeth of the storm, he now had no choice. He must fall off
to the leeward side of the rock, sailing a dead run before the wind, directly into the waiting jaws of
the Seven Devils! Nothing else for it, he thought, more grimly determined than ever.
From the crest of the wave, Nick had seen a small .ash of white on the rocky shore dead ahead. It
could only mean a sandy cove, one of many along this coast where he and Kate played on sunny
days.
If he could somehow time the waves precisely, so that Petrel 's keel might just brush the Devil's
deadly tops, he just might have a chance at beaching the boat on the sandy shore of that little cove.
Yes, he just might.
Now that he had a plan, the boy's spirits soared. It wasn't much of a plan, but it was the only chance
he had. If it failed, why, he–

The Titanic And The Sinking Of The Titanic
The Titanic If you are from the U.S then you have probably ran across the movie "The Titanic". One
of the most dynamic and thrilling movies that involves a romantic disaster of two passengers,
featuring leonardo dicaprio and kate winslet as Jack Dawson and Rose Dewitt Bukater. The main
plot of the story portrays jack and rose meeting each other in the Titanic aka "the ship of dreams"
and falling madly in love with each other. Unfortunately the ship hits a iceberg and sinks to sea
leaving many passengers horrified and jack dying to save Rose. After summarizing the story of the
movie, many people who have watched it only focus and sympathize for the romantic disaster of the
main characters. Although the movie gives a well depiction of the sinking of the titanic, the movie
does not show the full evaluation of what happened in the Titanic and also the aftermath of the
Titanic. This essay focuses on the nautical/maritime archaeology of the sinking of the Titanic. The
Titanic was built around 1911 and 1912. The ship was constructed with thousands of one inch thick
steel and two million steel and iron rivets that were equipped with the latest technology during the
time. The Titanic was designed to be the largest ship afloat. Multiple engineers who helped design
the ship believed it would be unsinkable, because of the use of hard steel and 16 watertight
compartments in case of a leaking emergency. On 2:20am on April 15, 1912 the ship was sailing too

Captain Ahab's Sermon
"Do human beings have free will or free choice and if not who or what shapes human destiny?"
(McSweeney 9) Herman Melville utilizes Father Mapple's sermon in his nineteenth century epic
novel Moby Dick, to illustrate the duality of mankind. Mortal man pursues his own singular
interests with selfish intent; however, God has prevailing intentions, which are often beyond the
comprehension of the individual. Melville expands and elaborates this theme throughout his epic
work. The sermon is an omen for the dynamic action of the novel, which is revealed in Captain
Ahab's megalomaniacal pursuit of the white whale. No person, ship or force of nature can sway
Captain Ahab from his selfish ambition. He is willing to risk his crew, career, and even ... Show

"There was a low rumbling of heavy sea–boots among the benches, and a still slighter shuffling of
women's shoes, and all was quiet again, and every eye on the preacher." The repetition of the "s"
sound sets the scene for the sermon. The Reverend rings out in Melville's grand self–echoing style.
Once again he sets the mood, and forces the reader to be attentive. Humble Father Mapple kneels in
the pulpit, illustrating the message of his sermon, by praying for redemption, as Jonah did at the
bottom of the sea in the belly of a whale. After completing the devout prayer Mapple breaks into a
mariners hymn, which is a petition to the worshipers, and a plea for repentance. Melville believed
"the primal truth" was represented by ... elemental and undisciplined energy. We are therefore
allowed only glimpses of Melville's, God, as he is imagined in various guises throughout the book –
e.g., the Old Testament God invoked by Father Mapple; the "great democratic God"...."(Bloom,
Bender 100) Righteous Father Mapple opens the sermon with a call to hear the word of the Lord.
"And God had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah.", but first speaks to the congregation in a
way that seems like he is justifying the ways of God. The ensuing sermon offers a clear insight and
functions as an interpretive key to the central thrust of the tale. "Melville undoubtedly intended that
Father Mapple's sermon should be the vehicle for the

Loyalty And Determination In The Odyssey
The acts of heroes inspire people and the way they fulfill their life. Homer's novel The Odyssey and
The Last True Story I'll Ever Tell by John Crawford both show similar heroic traits. Odysseus and
John both reveal the heroic qualities of loyalty and determination while returning home. In these
novels Odysseus and John show loyalty and determination through dependence, trust, and
perseverance. Loyalty appears within John and Odysseus throughout their heroic adventures.
Odysseus and his men came across the Lotus while on their journey. After the men consumed the
Lotus "they longed to stay forever... forgetful of their homeland" (Crawford 1212). Odysseus
exemplifies loyalty to his men by tying them down under their rowing benches in order to keep
them safe and far away from any danger. This shows the dependence and trust that these men have
in one another. Similarly to John when his team and him are told they "couldn't go home yet
[because] they were needed desperately" (Crawford 23). John and his squad have to be loyal to the
other soldiers in order to stick together and protect one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

of his men as possible. Strangely enough John experiences a similar willpower. John and the other
soldiers get ready to go home until the "word came out that [they were] picked [for] one final
mission, the barracks were filled with groans of impatience and disgust" (Crawford 191). Regardless
of John's feeling of disappointment his determination picked him up and carried him through one

Questions On The Mathematics Of Math
Mathematics to me, is complex numbers with only one correct answer involving numbers and other
unknown variables. There are formulas where you plug numbers into and solving for the x variable.
I would consider myself somewhat good at math I do not always get a concept right away but I will
work through the difficulty until I discover how to understand the concept at hand. I will study and
persevere until the challenge at hand is resolved. Usually, I am a quick learner which allows me to
understand math fairly quickly and at a easy rate. However, there are some parts of math that come
more naturally to me than others. For example, in precalculus I found graphing more straight
forward and easy to understand. Where as with trigonomic functions where I had to make both sides
equal the same functions I tended to get confused quicker. This happened because there were
multiple ways to get to the same answer and multiple answers so I felt like there was no one correct
way. There was lots of variation and flexibility and there was less structure so it went against the
usual ways I learn math. I was forced to change the way I had traditionally learned math. To learn
math means that you are being shown daily applications such as keeping track of money, figuring
out a budget, seeing how much space you have in your room, and so forth. There are tons of daily
applications for math some of which I don 't even fully realize. When I do realize how math has

Identify the Forms of Pragmatic Politeness and Impoliteness
Identify Forms of Politeness
Identify the forms of pragmatic politeness and impoliteness used by one of the speakers, De Falco
In the beginning of the rescue, De Falco (the Coast Guard Commander) was talking to the captain of
the cruise ship (i.e. Schettino) about coordinating the rescue. This was accomplished through using
direct positive politeness. Under this kind of approach, De Falco was telling Schettino that he
needed to go to the starboard side of ship and determine how many people were trapped. The way
that this occurred is De Falco told Schettino what need to be done. (Culpeper, 2011)
Evidence of this can be seen with De Falco saying, "Schettino? Listen Schettino. There are people
trapped on board. Now you go with your boat under the prow on the starboard side. There is a pilot
ladder. You will climb that ladder and go on board. You go on board and then you will tell me how
many people there are. Is that clear? I'm recording this conversation, Cmdr Schettino." ("Costa
Concordia Cruise Disaster," 2012) This is showing how De Falco is trying to nicely tell Schettino
that he needs to go back on board the ship immediately (during the middle of a crisis). (Culpeper,
2011) As Schettino failed to comply with De Falco's instructions, is when he began to use more
direct forms of impoliteness to push him. After refusing to do so, is when the conversation became
more heated between the two parties (with De Falco coming to the point of threatening the
Commander). This

Jackie Robinson's Futility Predicted Titanic Sinking

  • 1. The Sinking Of The Titanic In Futility By Jackie Robinson Because the book Futility was written over 14 years prior to the sinking of Titanic, there is a lot of controversy and mystery surrounding it. There are so many questions left unanswered, or were they? When Robinson wrote the book, how did he come up with the idea of a ship hitting an iceberg and then sinking? How did he design the Titan to almost be the same as the Titanic? How are then names so similar? When Robinson wrote the book, did he know of the plans to build the Titanic. These and so many other questions have been asked over and over again. One theory is that Robinson was clairvoyant, and could see the future. He even has a small following of people that believe that he was some sort of profit. If this theory was true, then ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Andrea Doria And The Collisions Of The Andrea Doria The night of July 25, 1956 the Stockholm, a Swedish passenger liner, collided into the Andrea Doria, Italian luxury liner, south of Nantucket. The collision claimed 46 lives onboard the Andrea Doria and five lives onboard the Stockholm. This was the world's first RADAR assisted collision at sea (Halpern, 2008). However, the collision was not caused by a RADAR malfunction. The collision was a result from the incompetence of the crew with the RADAR and the overall misconduct of the crew. The fog was very dense around the Andrea Doria as it traveled west at 267 degrees true with a speed of 21.8 knots (Halpern, 2008). The master of the Andrea Doria, Captain Piero Calamai, made all preparations necessary for navigation in fog (Halpern, 2008). This included additional lookouts on the bow and in the bridge, watertight doors closed, extra men on standby in the engine room, and a fog whistle sounding. Once the Nantucket lightship was detected on the RADAR dead ahead, Capt. Calamai ordered course change to 261 degrees to pass about a mile and half south of the light ship (Halpern, 2008). The Stockholm was running at 18.5 knots eastbound toward the Nantucket Shoals lightship at 090 degrees true, in a visibility of about 5 miles (Halpern, 2008). The Stockholm planned to go north towards Nova Scotia before heading across the Atlantic to Sweden. However, the master of the Stockholm, Captain Gunnar Nordenson, believed it was safer to meet the westbound traffic head on rather than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Titanic : The Story Of The Titanic The Titanic, the pride and joy of the White Star Line and, at the time, the largest moving object ever built. She was the most luxurious liner of her era, named the "ship of dreams". This legendary ship was known to be unsinkable, until April 15 1912. It is commonly believed that this "unsinkable" ship hit an iceberg that night and sank in the northern atlantic. But how is this possible? On a night with perfect weather and prior warning about the dangers of ice ahead? Maybe this isn't what happened. Maybe it wasn't the titanic that sank, maybe it was its sister ship the olympic. The olympic was completed may 31, 1911 it was ordered by the company white star lines but it was built by the shipbuilding company, Harland and Wolff. The olympic was captained by Edward Smith and made its maiden voyage on may 31, 1911. The olympic was a very expensive ship costing white star lines about 7.5 million dollars. The ship left southampton and arrived in new york on june 21. When the ship was in new york there was an incident with the tugboat, O.L Hollenbeck, the tugboat collided with the ship and slightly damaged the stern of the ship. This was the first of a few casualties that lead to the abating of the stability of this once strong ship. Three months later the olympic was in another accident, but this time the damage was not minor. The Olympic collided with the HMS Hulk off the isle of wight on september 20, 1911. The Olympic acquired two large holes, one above the waterline of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Hypocrisy In Tom Sawyer Finn Even if twain is cutting in his dismissive attitude toward abstract social causes that involve hypocrisy, he sees it as an inevitable and condonable aspect of life in a community. Adults fail to follow through on their word regarding the several adventures Tom undertakes that involve his leaving the village. In running away to Jackson's Island, getting lost in the cave, and tracking down Injun Joe's treasure, Tom and his friends break serious rules, yet in each case the villagers welcome the children home again without punishing them. The adults can hardly be condemned for their hypocrisy in desiring the children's safety, which underscores Twain's belief in the ultimate goodness of community. The individual who does deserve punishment in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In another moment he was flying down the street with his pail and a tingling rear, Tom was whitewashing with vigor, and Aunt Polly was retiring from the field with a slipper in her hand and triumph in her eye. But Tom's energy did not last. He began to think of the fun he had planned for this day, and his sorrows multiplied. Soon the free boys would come tripping along on all sorts of delicious expeditions, and they would make a world of fun of him for having to work – the very thought of it burnt him like fire. • 5. Challenger Shuttle System Essay The failure of the shuttle system is attributed to flaws in the SRM AFJ of the starboard SRB. The smoke observed puffing from this location, which resulted from the combustion of grease, joint insulation and the two O–rings that serve as the joint seal, indicated a seal failure at this joint (8). This failure, while rooted in design flaw, was likely worsened in flight due to joint separation from initial launch forces experienced on the pad, as well as through high wind shear effects. The flame that eventually burned its way through the seals at this location 58 seconds into the flight was deflected by the aerodynamic slipstream into the side of the ET. This flame quickly burned through the ET and contacted the LH2, leading to the termination of flight as previously described (9). The AFJ, as well as all other field joints on the SRB, consisted of a tang and clevis joint, which was secured by numerous pins and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On 27 January 1986, Thiokol engineers based in Utah expressed concern regarding the weather forecast at KSC, which was calling for temperatures below 30 degrees Fahrenheit. The lowest temperature NASA had launched a shuttle in was 53 degrees Fahrenheit, and Thiokol engineers did not recommend launching below that temperature as it was outside the design limits of the program (15). More specifically, many of the engineers believed this would compromise the O–ring's sealing ability and lead to a loss of life and orbiter (16). Thiokol managers backed their engineers and strongly urged NASA to postpone the launch until warmer conditions. NASA, however, did not see the engineers' concerns as a valid reason to delay the launch, as Thiokol engineers did not have hard data to quantify these concerns. NASA indirectly pressured Thiokol to approve the launch since they could not prove it was unsafe to launch, and the issue was not conveyed to higher management in NASA following the conversation ... The United States was not planning on entering the war until Great Britain made them mad. The United states were involved in World War 1 because of the sinking of the Lusitania vessel, Investment in money, and German Atrocities in Belgium. The sinking of the Lusitania was one of the first reasons that the United States were involved in the war. On May 7, 1915 Great Britain sunk the Lusitania. British ships were called in to action during the war to restore U–boat losses. The Lusitania was the sister to the Titanic. • 7. Midwest Cities Research Paper On the lower Mississippi River on March 19, 1968 around 0340 the SS African collided with the Midwest Cities, a towing vessel, which was transporting two tank barges. The front barge was the Intercity no. 14 and the rear was the Intercity no. 11. Intercity no. 11 was loaded with 19,000 barrels of crude oil. The crude oil's combustible vapors escaped during the collision and led to a serious shipboard fire on the SS African Star. The SS African Star was headed downstream at a 140 degree true course at about 16 knots. The Midwest Cities was at about 320 degrees going 6 knots upstream. The two vessels were closing in on each other at about 22 knots. Despite the darkness, the visibility was good and both vessels were aware of the others presence ... The collision caused the steel hulls of the two vessels to rub against each other and create sparks and heat from the friction. These sparks and heat could have potentially been the ignition source of the fire. The crude oil had an estimated flashpoint of 80 degrees Fahrenheit meaning the oil was a grade C flam¬mable liquid. Fire and explosions started in the first few minutes on Intercity no. 11. The Midwest Cities immediately went full astern to get away from the fire and Intercity no. 14 drifted away. The Intercity no. 11 grounded and sank. The vapors from the escaped crude oil were blown over the African Star's bow and ignited. The flames spread throughout the ship. The fire was in hold 2, 4, and 5. The paint was burning and the supplies and cargo on deck was also on fire. The smoke was very thick and it filled a large portion of the ship, including the engine space and living quarters. The pilot decided the best option was to run the vessel aground to aid in the firefighting and rescue operations. There was burning oil around the vessel in the water. Some people tried to jump overboard but they would land in the fires. Many people tried to escape out the port holes due to the fact that they were trapped in their room. • 8. Leadership Qualities Of The Great Leaders Of Our Time "Anyone can steer the ship, but it takes a Leader to chart the course" (Maxwell viii). Leadership. This concept has created many debates throughout history. What does it take to be classified as a great leader? What intangible characteristics are inherent to the great leaders of our time? Why have so many failed when put into a leadership role? During my 27 plus years in the military and over 20 years in the construction industry, I have been exposed to a wide variety of leaders and their leadership style. These examples have demonstrated to me that there are just as many bad as good. My journey down this path of growth has enlightened my awareness of realization that not everyone can be a leader and it takes hard work to be a successful leader. Never in my wildest dreams would I have envisioned where I am today. Navy Boot Camp, 1987, Orlando, Florida. Laying in a bunk bed at 2 am in the morning anxiously awaiting for the day to begin, along with the other 80 or so of us trying desperately to get some sleep before our first full day. The anticipation was as thick as a morning fog rolling in on the eastern seaboard. Every tick–tock of the wall mounted clock could be heard over the thunderous snoring from a dude at the other end of the compartment. • 9. Naval Warfare Changes Naval warfare has been adapting and changing to the technology of the time all throughout the ages. Since the very first battles in the Aegean Sea, between Greek galleys, to today's massive aircraft carriers, destroyers, and submarines; each technological step has been taken to try to outdo the opponent. One major step that naval warfare took was the transition from large numbers of muzzle loading cannons on either side of the ship to turret guns. The transition from forty to fifty guns cannons to twelve big guns at the most, had substantial impacts on several aspects of naval operations. New changes in tactics had to be made to facilitate the use of only a few guns that could point only one direction at a time. Maritime strategies had to be adjusted to compensate for the newer, bigger, faster, and more power ships. Procedures had to be changed to make manning the guns a specific job, but the biggest impact that the implementation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It enabled warships to locate enemy aircraft and ships at night, through clouds, and at great distances. Improved gun directors were developed at about the same time. They tracked moving aircraft and directed gunfire at them. Gun directors were used with proximity fuses. These fuses exploded a shell as it neared its target and eliminated the need for a direct hit (Polmar)." Technology always has and always will adapt to the tools of the war at hand. The tool of war that caused a significant amount of technology adaptation was the gun turret, which caused new steps to be taken in the fields of radar, automation, and ammunition specialization. That is how the gun turret impacted technology at sea. The changes in the tools of war have always caused several impacts on war itself. In 1979, NASA ordered Challenger to be converted to a space–rated orbiter, which consisted of massive disassembly and restructuring of the orbiter. It was delivered back to NASA as the second orbiter in their fleet of Space Shuttles in July 1982, where it was launched on its first mission on 4 April 1983. Crew members conducted the first spacewalk of the Space Shuttle program on this mission, and subsequent missions saw many other firsts for space exploration history (1). Initial thrust built up while the shuttle was secured to the launch pad, and it was released without issue and traveled upward as designed (5). No issues were noticed by the crew, officials, or observers at the time of launch. Subsequent review of camera footage, however, reveals smoke emanating at a cyclic rate of approximately 4 puffs per second from the aft field joint (AFJ) on the right SRB. As the shuttle left the launch pad, the smoke dissipated from view. The next 55 seconds occurred without issue for Challenger. All systems worked as programmed; notably, the automated guidance system was particularly active on this flight due to record high wind shears experienced by the shuttle, yet continued to be very effective. At 58.788 seconds after launch, flame appeared at the same location on the starboard SRB's AFJ as the smoke had at launch. This flame continued to spread to the external tank (ET) connection ring, then to the ET itself. It breached the ET, which housed liquid hydrogen (LH2) and liquid oxygen (LO2) fuel for the shuttle's main engines. A large, visible flash surrounded the stern of the shuttle system, all while the crew carried out normal navigational maneuvers. The shuttle's engines shut down 73.5 seconds after launch due to lack of fuel, and all signals were lost at 74 seconds following a bright flash around the nose of the ET and orbiter ... • 12. How Did The Vikings Barbarians The Vikings are commonly known as barbarians, evil, sometimes even marauders. However, the Vikings didn't just raid prospering villages or monasteries. They also spent a lot of time exploring overseas. While the rest of Europe was squabbling over what land belongs to who, the Vikings were isolated, all alone on their three little peninsulas. This left them plenty of time to expand their knowledge on ships and navigation. It also led them to bring ships into their culture. Viking long– ships were lean, speedy, lightweight ships that could easily cut through the most vicious waves that the ocean could throw at them. The Norse people were separated from mainland Europe by the North Sea. As their nation advanced they built longships and started exploring the ocean. "The Viking longboat was the key to the Vikings success in traveling." (Legends and Chronicles, Paragraph 14). This made the long–ship a very valuable and important asset to the Vikings. The longships were so fast and nimble, they were great for transportation of soldiers and merchandise. At the time, no other civilization had been able to achieve such an amazing naval feat. this gave the Vikings a great advantage over medieval combat, political affairs, and even the trading industry. ... I felt a little jerk, and the boat started moving and the thundering falls grew closer. Though I was warned not to stand up, I got excited and rushed out of my seat, eager to see the falls. My hands grabbed the railings as I watched the roaring waters go around in a horseshoe shape. After a while. the sky darkened, lightning flashed, thunder boomed, winds whipped up, and it started pouring. I started to regret staying outside and started slowly making my back to my seat. The boat lurched to the starboard side, and I slid back to the railing. My sister, the only other person nearby, screamed as she jerked forward, her seatbelt stopping her from flying into the water. I slowly got up but the boat lurched to the other side and I went flying forward, my head hitting a chair. Clutching my head, my vision dimmed and I went flying towards the railing again. Horrified, I suddenly realized that I missed the metal bar entirely and was actually hurtling towards the water. On impact, my body instinctively curled into a ball. I fought to reach the surface, but the water from the falls was pushing me down. When my head last broke the surface, I saw many more people in the place where I fell out. • 16. Analyzing Herman Melville's Writing Style Every writer has their own writing style; for example, Herman Melville's style can be explained using complex diction, lengthy syntax, repeated ideas, description and characterization. First off, Melville can use simple words like, "cautiously," "animation," and "excited," (Melville 3&4) but he mainly uses complex words such as, "countenance," "inarticulate," and "convulsively" (3&4). Furthermore, Melville seems to be very fond of using long sentences such as, Receiving the topmaul from Starbuck, he advanced towards the mainmast with the hammer uplifted in one hand, exhibiting the gold with the other, and with a high raised voice exclaiming: "Whosoever of ye raises me a white–headed whale with a wrinkled brow and a crooked jaw; whosoever ... To further evaluate Melville's writing, he also uses a lot of repeated words in order to get his point across. For example, on page one he uses "pacing," "tread," "stride," and "rounds" to describe the frantic movements of Ahab, however it could also be taken as Ahab's thoughts running chaotically through his mind. Later on, it goes to say that Ahab "feels, feels, feels," as proof that Ahab thinks with his heart and not his head. In addition, he also uses parallel structure to strengthen his writing style. For example, he says "Cut your seizings and draw the poles, ye harpooneers!" (11). Another example of parallel structure was, "There's a most special, a most cunning, oh, a most malicious difference!" (13), he used parallel structure to create a more uniformed and strong writing style. Lastly, Melville uses literary devices to make his writing style more interesting. There are several mistakes that occurred in succession to cause the events to unfold as they did. The captain's first decision was to get close to the shore of Giglio as a "salute" to the island, something that he had successfully accomplished several times. This would have been another successful salute, but the Costa Concordia was moving too fast for getting so close to shore. While the captain had consulted radar and maps, he seems to have been navigating based on what he could actually observe by looking, which was his second mistake. His third error was something that many people do: he was talking on the phone while driving. The captain's next mistake came out of confusion, perhaps due to the bottle of wine he consumed with dinner. He began his turn away from the shore by calculating the distance from a set of rocks that lay about 900 yards off the harbor. He did not see another rock that was even closer. It was not until they had turned that he saw the huge rock below them. He ordered another turn, this time away from the rock. The bow and midsection cleared the rock, but the stern hit the rocks. "The problem was that I went to starboard trying to avoid it, and that was the mistake, because I should not have gone starboard," Schettino told prosecutors. "I made an imprudent decision. The Case Of The Securities And Exchange Commission Essay Senators Tammy Baldwin (D–WI) and Jeff Merkley (D–OR) introduced Bill S.2720 on March 17, 2016, which if enacted and implemented into law would be called the Brokaw Act. Currently, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) requires beneficial owners to file for ownership and disclose their ownership interests if he/she owns more than 5% of a registered class of security equity within 10 days. However, the Brokaw Act would reduce this disclosure period from 10 to 2 business days and require short interests disclosures pertaining to the security. Further, the Act would amend the SEC's current definition of beneficial ownership from just ownership over securities with voting rights to an individual who has monetary or indirect monetary interest in the equity. The Act also broadens the definition of security ownership from an individual owner to include individuals acting as managers of transactions of the security, who have influence over management and who assist the individual 'beneficial owner'. Finally, the proposed act has received strong opposition from Activist Investors while Issuers, Shareholders, Pro–Business Conservatives and Corporate Board Members equally propose it. • 20. Is RMS Lusitania a Conspriacy or Not? Probably the most important incident happened on 7th May 1915 when the British passenger liner RMS Lusitania were sank by German U–20 led by Capitan Walther Schweiger with one torpedo hit and a second explosion triggered by coal dust and other explosives within 18 minutes. About a thousand people lost their life, among them about 100 Americans. Hence American protest were quite sharp and this incident dragged the United States into the war. However the incident itself contains some unexplained mysteries, such as being slowed down and abandoned by escorts in the war zone declared by German Empire. Thus, many people argue that the sink of RMS Lusitania is actually a conspiracy made by the British and American government instead of an accident. Personally however, I believe that it is a true accident. The reason is threefold: The structure of the lower deck is suspicious; the course of RMS Lusitania is fixed; the description of the sinking written by Capitan Walther Schweiger is trustworthy. First, while regarding the technical prints of RMS Lusitania's lower deck, it is not hard to find where the boiler rooms are located. The second floor of the lower deck is almost fulfilled with giant boiler rooms, and they are surrounded with coal storages in order to load up coal and refuel the hungry coal–fired boilers. Beside the rear boiler rooms is where the cargos located. Coal dust is explosive, hence the explosion blast of the torpedo trigger a second wave of explosion, which ... Most standard canoes, though, at fourteen to eighteen feet in length, cannot comfortably accommodate more than three passengers. A beginner's initial experience with canoeing should be on a calm pond or lake, or a calm stretch of river. If it's especially windy, or the lake is crowded with powerboat users and jetskiers, the experience may not be as much fun and the beginning canoeist may become frustrated. In addition, a beginner shouldn't try canoeing the first time on his or her own. While piloting a canoe on one's own can easily be accomplished once one has some paddling experience, it's best to gain that experience with another person, hopefully someone who's paddled a canoe before. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The J–stroke is the bow stroke with one crucial addition – at the end of the stroke, give the blade a quarter twist so that it's perpendicular to the water's surface, and give a little push to the outside – if you're paddling on the portside, your stroke will resemble a "J." You'll feel the canoe move a bit to the portside when you do this. When starting from a stop, the turning of the canoe will be more exaggerated, as will be the return swing from the "J," but once the canoe's underway and moving well, the swings from port to starboard and back will become less noticeable and the canoe will be moving more smoothly. Some canoeists, rather than giving that little push at the end of the J–stroke, will just hold the paddle in the water with the blade turned, giving a rudder effect to the end of the stroke. This is useful, especially on long trips when you want to conserve your strength (code for "you're tired"). The drawback is that by the time the canoe straightens out, it's started to slow down. Dr. Paul J Quinn stated in his book Dusk to Dawn " The Titanic had actually been designed to carry forty– eight lifeboats but was rejected because it made the deck look cluttered"(11). The sinking could have been avoided if the Titanic crew had not over estimated its strength, and had listened carefully to the warnings of numerous other ships, and if the crew managed the rescue efforts into the lifeboats correctly. This tragedy could have been avoided if the crew had not over estimated the largest ship in the world, built by a work force of 17,000 people. The designers and crew overlooked many details on the ship knowing that if this ship had ever sunk that they would not be ready for the rescue. The crew and the builders of this ship had considered no worries about the Titanic, so they were not fully planned for this destruction (Ballard 11). That night there were many warnings of icebergs from other ships. There seems to be a conflict on whether or not the warnings reached the bridge. We may never know the answer to this question. The greatest tragedy of all may be that there were not enough lifeboats for everyone on board. According to Walter Lord, author of The Night Lives On, the Titanic could have been saved in the very beginning of the crisis when the iceberg was first reported to the bridge. Around 12:30 a.m. the bridge informed the crew that only women and children would be loaded on the lifeboats (Eaton,Haas,152). By 1:30 a.m., there was panic among some of the passengers. One example was on the port side of the boat. A group of passengers threatened to jump into a boat full of passengers. To scare them, one of the officers fired three shots on the ship's side. The warning proved to be successful. Nobody was injured and the passengers calmed down (Eaton and Haas 154). At the last moments with only forty seven available spaces on the last lifeboat, the crew instructed everyone to form a circle around the boat. Women and children were the only people permitted to pass through the circle. A little while after the last lifeboat left, the stern lifted clear out of the water with more than 1500 people still on board (Eaton and Haas 157–161). The climatic moment came at 2:20 a.m. The Titanic stood perpendicular to the water. As people in the lifeboats looked on, they noticed the ship stayed perpendicular for a minute and then disappeared to the bottom of the ocean (Lord, Lives on 137). Nothing else for it, he thought, more grimly determined than ever. From the crest of the wave, Nick had seen a small .ash of white on the rocky shore dead ahead. It could only mean a sandy cove, one of many along this coast where he and Kate played on sunny days. If he could somehow time the waves precisely, so that Petrel 's keel might just brush the Devil's deadly tops, he just might have a chance at beaching the boat on the sandy shore of that little cove. Yes, he just might. Now that he had a plan, the boy's spirits soared. It wasn't much of a plan, but it was the only chance he had. If it failed, why, he– "Shorten sail, ... • 30. The Titanic And The Sinking Of The Titanic The Titanic If you are from the U.S then you have probably ran across the movie "The Titanic". One of the most dynamic and thrilling movies that involves a romantic disaster of two passengers, featuring leonardo dicaprio and kate winslet as Jack Dawson and Rose Dewitt Bukater. The main plot of the story portrays jack and rose meeting each other in the Titanic aka "the ship of dreams" and falling madly in love with each other. Unfortunately the ship hits a iceberg and sinks to sea leaving many passengers horrified and jack dying to save Rose. After summarizing the story of the movie, many people who have watched it only focus and sympathize for the romantic disaster of the main characters. Although the movie gives a well depiction of the sinking of the titanic, the movie does not show the full evaluation of what happened in the Titanic and also the aftermath of the Titanic. This essay focuses on the nautical/maritime archaeology of the sinking of the Titanic. The Titanic was built around 1911 and 1912. The ship was constructed with thousands of one inch thick steel and two million steel and iron rivets that were equipped with the latest technology during the time. The Titanic was designed to be the largest ship afloat. Multiple engineers who helped design the ship believed it would be unsinkable, because of the use of hard steel and 16 watertight compartments in case of a leaking emergency. On 2:20am on April 15, 1912 the ship was sailing too fast for the icy conditions and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Then you will ascend to heaven as my daughter, and I will, sometime in the future." "What of my body?" Seeing it lie beneath her, overcome by sudden immense emotions. "Your body is no longer needed. It's an empty shell of skin and bones. Bend your head down and look at your soul." Soul lowered its head. Paused, contemplating as her soul viewed through to where her body lies. "We understand. It's time she finally learns to take care of herself." Elizabeth nodded, "Your right she needs to finish growing up. I know she can do it." "We can watch over her while she goes about her life. Let's take a cruise aboard. When those in the rowboat pull the canoe aside the ship, quickly leap from your canoe as we do. It will be dark down inside the ship's hull. It might even frighten you a little, but there is nothing to fear you're a soul. Nothing in the mortal world can harm you, but touching a mortal consider this an adventure." Those words swirled about in Elizabeth's subconsciousness, reawakening a memory from long ago when she said them to Tiffany, contemplating how true they were then and how true they are now. With the canoe alongside the ship, mother's soul observed Elizabeth having a problem with her new reality. "We must depart, cannot allow mortals to touch us, do as we ... • 32. Captain Ahab's Sermon "Do human beings have free will or free choice and if not who or what shapes human destiny?" (McSweeney 9) Herman Melville utilizes Father Mapple's sermon in his nineteenth century epic novel Moby Dick, to illustrate the duality of mankind. Mortal man pursues his own singular interests with selfish intent; however, God has prevailing intentions, which are often beyond the comprehension of the individual. Melville expands and elaborates this theme throughout his epic work. The sermon is an omen for the dynamic action of the novel, which is revealed in Captain Ahab's megalomaniacal pursuit of the white whale. No person, ship or force of nature can sway Captain Ahab from his selfish ambition. He is willing to risk his crew, career, and even ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "There was a low rumbling of heavy sea–boots among the benches, and a still slighter shuffling of women's shoes, and all was quiet again, and every eye on the preacher." The repetition of the "s" sound sets the scene for the sermon. The Reverend rings out in Melville's grand self–echoing style. Once again he sets the mood, and forces the reader to be attentive. Humble Father Mapple kneels in the pulpit, illustrating the message of his sermon, by praying for redemption, as Jonah did at the bottom of the sea in the belly of a whale. After completing the devout prayer Mapple breaks into a mariners hymn, which is a petition to the worshipers, and a plea for repentance. Melville believed "the primal truth" was represented by ... elemental and undisciplined energy. We are therefore allowed only glimpses of Melville's, God, as he is imagined in various guises throughout the book – e.g., the Old Testament God invoked by Father Mapple; the "great democratic God"...."(Bloom, Bender 100) Righteous Father Mapple opens the sermon with a call to hear the word of the Lord. "And God had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah.", but first speaks to the congregation in a way that seems like he is justifying the ways of God. The ensuing sermon offers a clear insight and functions as an interpretive key to the central thrust of the tale. • 33. Virginia Beach Case Analysis Essay Virginia Beach focuses in on demographic and behavioral segmentation to appeal to potential tourists (pg. 89). They think of age ranges and what is going on in that time of your life and create advertisements to appeal to you. They call this "what each group lives for" (pg. 89) Since Virginia Beach focuses in on each demographic by age group they should also focus in on income. Singles without children may be willing to spend more. They could advertise beach front hotel rooms or hotel rooms with a view on the "LIVEFORTHECRUISE.COM" page (pg.90). This would give the family a better feel of Virginia Beach, there would be less lines, the Boardwalk would not be overcrowded, and restaurants would be more attentive. I would also still advertise the Charter fishing trips, they are a year round activity. PT. 2 DELAWARE VACTION 1. If I were to choose a destination in my state it would be Dewey Beach. This is a popular destination in Delaware because it is a beach full of restaurants and bars. It has the bay on one side and the ocean on the other. It appeals a lot to young adults who want to go away and be surrounded by people their own age. There are also musical events all year round at the different bars. 2. My target market would be young adults ranging from about 23–28. 3. Dewey is a very big party beach. There are tons of bars, famously Starboard. This bar stays open all year round and is constantly packed with people. Also Dewey is a great place for people in this age range to be surrounded by people their own age. They are young and still want to go out and have fun. The musical performances would also appeal to this age range. There are four beaches anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour surrounding Dewey too, which means there are plenty of opportunities for day trips too. So the money they are spending goes a long ... • 35. Loyalty And Determination In The Odyssey The acts of heroes inspire people and the way they fulfill their life. Homer's novel The Odyssey and The Last True Story I'll Ever Tell by John Crawford both show similar heroic traits. Odysseus and John both reveal the heroic qualities of loyalty and determination while returning home. In these novels Odysseus and John show loyalty and determination through dependence, trust, and perseverance. Loyalty appears within John and Odysseus throughout their heroic adventures. Odysseus and his men came across the Lotus while on their journey. After the men consumed the Lotus "they longed to stay forever... forgetful of their homeland" (Crawford 1212). Odysseus exemplifies loyalty to his men by tying them down under their rowing benches in order to keep them safe and far away from any danger. This shows the dependence and trust that these men have in one another. Similarly to John when his team and him are told they "couldn't go home yet [because] they were needed desperately" (Crawford 23). John and the other soldiers get ready to go home until the "word came out that [they were] picked [for] one final mission, the barracks were filled with groans of impatience and disgust" (Crawford 191). The frigate was then in 31 15' north latitude and 136 42' east longitude. The coast of Japan still remained less than two hundred miles to leeward. Night was approaching. They had just struck eight bells; large clouds veiled the face of the moon, then in its first quarter. The sea undulated peaceably under the stern of the vessel. The Collateral Duty Inspector is considered a subject matter expert on the aircraft they work on. In order to become a Collateral Duty Inspector a sailor must go through extensive training and meet certain requirements. As a sailor looking to make the Navy a career until retirement, becoming a Collateral Duty Inspector was a major goal of mine. I was on deployment with my second command VAW–126 on board the aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman when I started the process. As a prospective Collateral Duty Inspector, I was working nights from 1800 to 0600. I would spend most of the night with my supervisor Palar learning what to do and what to look for. • 38. Questions On The Mathematics Of Math Mathematics to me, is complex numbers with only one correct answer involving numbers and other unknown variables. There are formulas where you plug numbers into and solving for the x variable. I would consider myself somewhat good at math I do not always get a concept right away but I will work through the difficulty until I discover how to understand the concept at hand. I will study and persevere until the challenge at hand is resolved. Usually, I am a quick learner which allows me to understand math fairly quickly and at a easy rate. However, there are some parts of math that come more naturally to me than others. For example, in precalculus I found graphing more straight forward and easy to understand. Where as with trigonomic functions where I had to make both sides equal the same functions I tended to get confused quicker. This happened because there were multiple ways to get to the same answer and multiple answers so I felt like there was no one correct way. There was lots of variation and flexibility and there was less structure so it went against the usual ways I learn math. I was forced to change the way I had traditionally learned math. To learn math means that you are being shown daily applications such as keeping track of money, figuring out a budget, seeing how much space you have in your room, and so forth. There are tons of daily applications for math some of which I don 't even fully realize. When I do realize how math has helped in my daily life I tend ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Identify the Forms of Pragmatic Politeness and Impoliteness Identify Forms of Politeness Identify the forms of pragmatic politeness and impoliteness used by one of the speakers, De Falco In the beginning of the rescue, De Falco (the Coast Guard Commander) was talking to the captain of the cruise ship (i.e. Schettino) about coordinating the rescue. This was accomplished through using direct positive politeness. Under this kind of approach, De Falco was telling Schettino that he needed to go to the starboard side of ship and determine how many people were trapped. The way that this occurred is De Falco told Schettino what need to be done. (Culpeper, 2011) Evidence of this can be seen with De Falco saying, "Schettino? Listen Schettino. There are people trapped on board. Now you go with your boat under the prow on the starboard side. There is a pilot ladder. You will climb that ladder and go on board. You go on board and then you will tell me how many people there are. Is that clear? I'm recording this conversation, Cmdr Schettino." ("Costa Concordia Cruise Disaster," 2012) This is showing how De Falco is trying to nicely tell Schettino that he needs to go back on board the ship immediately (during the middle of a crisis). (Culpeper, 2011) As Schettino failed to comply with De Falco's instructions, is when he began to use more direct forms of impoliteness to push him. After refusing to do so, is when the conversation became more heated between the two parties (with De Falco coming to the point of threatening the Commander). This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
