Persuasive Articles About Gun Control Essay
Persuasive articles about Gun Control
Persuading an audience can be done in several different fashions, one of which is Hugh Rank's
Model of Persuasion. Rank's model states that two major strategies are used to achieve the particular
goal of persuasion. These strategies are nicely set into two main schemas; the first method is to
exaggerate an aspect of something, known as "intensify." While the second is to discredit it, which is
referred to as "downplay." Al Franken, Jeffrey Snyder, Harlan Ellison, and George Will, have all
written persuasive articles about gun control. In reading all of the various articles on gun control by
authors, I found George F. Will's The Last Word to be the most persuasive. Will wrote his piece
about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The least persuasive essay out of the four was Harlan Ellison's An Edge in My Voice. Ellison
presents his argument in a style that seems to me is more of a disgruntled rambling about both
famous and infamous people that die from gun shot, than an article about gun control. Ellison
spends the first few pages asking the reader if they cried when a certain person died; he begins with
famous people such as Martin Luther King, Bobby Kennedy, and John Lennon, and then moves on
to more obscure examples. Instead of trying to build an argument, Ellison seemed to be more caught
up with anger and the notion of conspiracies. He does however try to use the "intensify" technique
of Rank's model, to persuade the reader of the horror of deaths caused by guns and their importance.
Although Ellison did try to persuade his audience in a different manor, I felt it was ineffective at
best, due to his repetition and exaggeration.
From these four articles written by Franken, Snyder, Ellison, and Will I personally found Will's
piece to be the most persuasive with Franken's not far behind. Will's approach was more formal
while Franken's style was more satirical, but I felt both authors were able to incorporate Rank's
model and persuade the reader more subtlety than the other authors

The Elements Of The Genre Of Speculative Fiction
Next to being neo–slave narratives, Kindred and Beloved, as well as Who Fears Death, are examples
of the genre of Speculative Fiction. This type of literature features supernatural and/or futuristic
elements. Is serves as an umbrella term and includes science fiction, fantasy, literary fiction,
supernatural fiction, horror, dystopia, utopia, (post–)apocalyptic and superhero elements, as well as
their combinations (Jackson and Moody–Freeman, 127). Hence, "in Speculative Fiction the action
of the story can take place in a culture that never existed, a world we know nothing of, or an earth
that might have been or might be" (Shade, 2). In other words, speculative literature includes all texts
that take place "in a universe slightly different from our own" (Wyatt, 1–2). Language is "not merely
descriptive but also functions as a form of word building" (Burnett, 137), as neologisms can be both
metaphorical and literal in this genre.
Speculative Fiction ranges back to ancient history and has been pervading humanity from the
beginning. Furby and Hines state that the human has always been a "story–telling ape" (Furby and
Hines, 10), as we get access to the world through the narrative. So–called taproot texts, the very first
fictional texts, such as The Epic of Gilgamesh, still form the basis for modern authors to draw ...

Still, until recently, it has not given much attention to issues of race and ethnicity in the context of
imagined futures. Historically, the focus of the genre has been on social and political commentary,
as well as responses to social, cultural and technological changes. Mainstream speculative fictional
novels explored "issues of empire, [rather than] blacks, women and other culturally diverse peoples
within their narratives" (Jackson and Moody–Freeman, 128). In other

Analysis Of The Undercover Parent
Every day teenagers use the internet, whether it's on their phones or on the computers at school or at
home. Their lives are practically centered around it. They're connecting with each other on social
media such as: Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, and even online video games, and this has is benefits, but
it can also have some negative and possibly dangerous situations. The internet is not a safe haven for
anyone or anything. In the article "The Undercover Parent" the author, Harlan Coben, makes the
argument that spyware is alright to be used by parents on their kids computers as long as the parents
are using the software responsibly. I agree with Coben's statements because of his solid arguments
of dangerous conversations, privacy, and bullying. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One argument that many people mention is that spyware is an invasion of privacy. As a teenager
myself, I value the whole idea of privacy. The use of spyware to monitor your child's computer is on
the borderline of invasion of that privacy; however the use of none of it is on the borderline and
even beyond the point negligence. Coben mentions this idea of privacy on the internet that, "One of
the most popular arguments against spyware is the claim that you are reading your teenager's every
thought, that in today's world, a computer is the little key–locked diary of the past. But posting
thoughts on the Internet isn't the same thing as hiding them under your mattress."(Coben 1). In
reality, there is no real form of privacy on the internet. What you post there will forever be there and
can be seen by anyone no matter how many passwords or locks you put on it. However most teens
and kids would still over look this idea and consider the use of spyware an invasion of their privacy,
and it can be. If you are monitoring every single conversation your child has, then that's crossing the
line and invading the privacy of your child. There is a difference between being responsible and
being nosy. You as a parent are there to look out for dangerous chatter or possible conversations that
look and sound concerning. You are not there to listen in on what teacher they hate, or who they
have a crush on, or if they're crying over how a book ended. However, not monitoring at all is
practically a form of neglect. Being a parent it is your responsibility to protect your child from the
possible dangers of the world, whether it is in real life or online. Providing no form of protection or
even checking on your child's activities online can put them at high risk of getting hurt whether it is
emotionally or physically. The dangers are out there and it is worth crossing the border of privacy in

Greater Education "Colleges are looking for students who push themselves, who are interested and
excited about learning. Honors courses are an indicator of intellectual drive and curiosity."( Mark
Montgomery). Knowing this, wouldn't all principals and teachers want honors or advanced courses
in their school? Unfortunately, not all schools have them and some even are eliminating these
courses. It may help the core students but there just leaving the higher level students brains for
mind–numbing dullness. Separate higher level classes should be available for every student if
needed because it challenges students, improves the behavior of the higher level student, and

Classes such as AP, honors, and advanced are usually based on preparing you for college, getting
you to college and getting you through college. Katy Hopkins says, "Kids [who take AP courses]
usually are able to think outside the box; they're better prepared; they have stronger study skills; and
the bar is held up for them at a level where they reach that bar themselves. They already know, 'This
is what my teacher is going to expect of me–or this is what I expect of myself," As you can you tell,
kids who take specifically AP classes, or generally higher level classes, are prepared with many
great skills that are useful in college or even getting through college. Higher level courses may even
help students beyond college and into the work world. "High school students must prepare for
college if they hope to have a middle–class income...The best standard for preparation for college is
a good working knowledge of the subject matter earned in challenging courses during high school.
For further definition, one of the tools recommended for college preparation is the Advanced
Placement Program, administered by the nonprofit College Board, which also administers the
Scholastic Aptitude Test."(reviewjournal.com). Apparently, Ap courses can be life changing. These
courses can help students through high school, college, and the rest of their lives. Ap classes can
even have the same amount of work as an actual college student. "The bottom line is that college is
probably the same amount of work as a high school schedule full of AP classes."(scholarships.com)
All in all Ap and higher level classes are to help to not break you. The classes prepare you not only
for college but for life. If these classes are this important wouldn't it be offered for every student?
Ap and honors classes should be offered to everyone because it is life

The Importance Of Success In High School
As my junior year of highschool comes to an end I have been in situations I would have never
imagined would occur but as it is said ¨Everything happens for a reason.¨ It is also said that your
junior year of high school is supposed to be one of the toughest and most important school years.
This year has been a challenge. It has brought change in the worst ways but only to motivate me to
do better. In order to understand you must know that when I first began high school as a freshman I
had a perseverance and the focus to succeed and be the best in everything I did. I knew what I was
aiming for and I there was no stopping me from getting there. Unfortunately I lost track of this
motivation and somehow things just kept getting worse. Procrastination became an issue and
whenever I thought I was getting back on top of things there was always a situation that had most of
my attention like my grandfather's death or friendship arguments. Things that I shouldn't have let get
in the way of my success. Paying more attention to these personal problems rather than my school
work may have cost me a perfect transcript of straight A's and B´s as well as a 4.0 gpa and i know
there is no greater regret than allowing yourself to fail but this failure has served me well. Although
my freshman year self would be disappointed with me I know I can only take this experience to
motivate myself again to be the best in everything I do. As a scholar I have tried to challenge myself
and build up

The Creators Of Salt Of The Earth
The creators of Salt of the Earth "had a consciousness of radical activism" (Aptheker 2015). Paul
Jarrico, Michael Wilson, and Herbert J. Biberman made connections between the Cold War anti–
union sentiment and what was happening in the lives of the community at Hanover, New Mexico
(Balthasar 353). "Salt fuses the antiracist, anti imperialist sensibility...with the central popular front
icon and narrative form– the strike tale. In this sense Salt is not simply an expansion of a 1930s
political aesthetic; it is the fulfillment of it" (Balthasar 356). This included thinking about how
different forms of oppression impact people. Their final film implicitly critiques the United States'
imperialist policies and treatment of minority groups (Balthasar 355), a dangerous move in the era
of high tensions due to the red scare. This, along with affiliations with the Hollywood Anti–Nazi
League (HANL) made them targets of the United States government (Balthasar 354). Their careers
had been destroyed, since no one wanted to make themselves a target of the U.S. by being friendly
with people that were accused of being communists, and their film was blacklisted. The leading
actress, Rosaura Revualtas, who had already radically starred in what is recognized as the first
lesbian film (Aptheker), also faced punishment for starring in Salt. Though she was here legally,
participation in the film was grounds for her deportation. Furthermore, she was banned from acting
in Mexico (Aptheker). Clint

Literary Analysis Of Suspense In Seconds Away By Harlan Coben
Seconds Away by Harlan Coben is the continuation of Mickey Bolitar mysteries life. The story
begins with Mickey and his friends Emma and Spoon finding themselves in another mysterious
situation where their friend Rachel has been shot. On top of the shooting Mickey still has to figure
out the story behind the abeona shelter and the mysterious death of his father. Harlan Coben used
many literary elements to tell another suspense and mysterious story of MIckey bolitar. The author
used Irony and point of view and character to tell this story. First literary element the author used
was point of view. In the story a chief police point of view of Mickey Bolitar changed during the
course of the book. In the beginning the chief police disliked Mickey. The reason for the dislike is
because Mickey has gotten in trouble many times by him. For example breaking the law by
trespassing to go to Bat ladies house. Mickey had gotten arrested for that as well. In Seconds Away
Mickey has gotten in trouble once again by the chief police. MIckey see's a Nazi war criminal that
he saw at Bat ladies house. Mickey decides to follow hoping to get some answers. Mickey follows
the guy to a house. As he gets in the house begins to burn but Mickey was able to escape from the
house but later he gets arrested by the chief police once again to be arrested. Being involved with

Cash For Grades
As a child, have you experienced at any time that your parents have compensated you for earning
great grades? Many parents currently will pay their children if they bring home an A in their report
card. The parents feel that their child should deserve compensation for the decent grades they
receive. But these parents do not understand the negative effects that can occur to their children.
Parents should not pay their children if they excel in their education because money may not be an
effective motivator, it does not instill intrinsic motivation, and it can cause unfair pressure in the
classroom that leads to poor performance.
Money may not be an effective motivator for great grades. Liz Pulliam Weston, who wrote the

Many states and cities have these Cash–for–Grades programs that will pay children if they achieve
satisfying grades. One of these programs is the Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship. It
provides up to 500 dollars in state revenues to children that have all A's in all their classes. But when
children obtain a C, their parent's will become furious since their child has a C, and receives no
money (Flannery). It would be wrong considering children that do not have wonderful grades could
be from poorer families, so they will probably need the money more than children coming from the
higher classes. According to the article, "Cash for Grades", it says, "In a well–known Stanford
University experiment, more than three decades old, researchers divided preschoolers into two
groups: one that would get gold stars for their drawings and one that would not. Both drew
enthusiastically, but when asked to draw again – without a reward – the gold–star group cut its
drawing time in half. It appeared as if they had lost enthusiasm for the task when it did not come
with a reward" (Flannery). These children are only doing the work to receive the reward at the end,
not for the benefit that it can help them later in life. If we keep rewarding children for everything
they do, then they will expect a reward for everything they do later in

When I Heard The Learn D Astronomer Poem Analysis
Haleigh Youll
When I Heard The Learn'd Astronomer Almost every college student in the world can relate to being
bored in a lecture hall. Old professors teaching boring material that does not relate to what you want
to be doing with your time. In Walt Whitman's poem, "When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer,"
Whitman's character is describing just that. The character leaves a lecture and is one within nature.
The character uses past tense throughout the entire poem. I believe that this poem is someone
reflecting on a moment in life where they made a choice between knowledge and true happiness.
The character's ability to connect with nature helps them make a tough decision about what they
want in life. The title and first line of the poem are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The character is no longer using terms of isolation when speaking. Whitman's use of the word in
shows the character is submerging themselves within nature. No longer alone to deal with the real
world. The characters thoughts are blending with the air around them. Whitman's use of the word
moist expresses the emotions the character is feeling within nature. When I think of the word moist,
I think of alive and prospering. The character relates because they are no longer stagnant in life. The
characters decision to submerse themselves in the natural world will further liven up their life. The
character no longer has the weight of the world on their shoulders and is free to be who they truly

Spyware: The Undercover Parent By Harlan Coben
When reading Harlan Coben's article, "The Undercover Parent", I learned about spyware and it's
advantages and uses. Today, a majority of teens use technology on a daily basis. In fact, a study by
CNN said that the average teens spends a "mind–boggling" 9 hours a day using media. Now with
the innovation of computers, tablets, and smartphones, kids around the world are constantly using
their devices for hours a day. The only problem is that we don't know what they are browsing or
what they could be doing on their device. This is extremely dangerous for teenagers today. Spyware
is a solution that can easily help solve this problem. Spyware helps protect your endangered child
from the hazards of the internet. It's easy to install, prevents your ... Show more content on

Yes, it is true that some teens can be trusted, but most cannot. After you have installed spyware and
take a peek into what your teen is browsing, you might realize that your child is actually not as
trustworthy as you thought. This is especially true in Coben's article. In paragraph 13, he states that
a friend of his used spyware to monitor his "college–bound, straight–A daughter", and found out,
"not only was she using drugs, but she was also sleeping with her dealer". This shows that as
convincing and honest as you think your child may be, they are not as trustworthy as you think. If
your teen is trustworthy, then spyware shouldn't affect them at all. Installing a little bit of spyware
does not hurt anyone and is only used to assure that your child is safe from

AP Classes Advantages And Disadvantages
High school is a very hectic time in a teenager's life. There are multiple different things going on,
such as classes to choose, who to be friends with, deciding on colleges and careers, and much more.
There are many classes to choose from. Once classes have been chosen, it is now time to pick what
level is most beneficial: regular, honors, or Advanced Placement. But be warned, Advanced
Placement classes do not benefit US students because they are too rushed and the students are not
prepared to take them. It is understood that many parents believe that AP classes can improve their
GPA, prepare them for college, and teach them many important skills; such as leadership,
determination, and critical thinking. Taking an AP class, even one, can change a student's GPA. The
common misconception is that the courses being taken can improve a one's GPA. It is indeed true
that doing well in an AP course can drastically improve a student's GPA. The amount of points
awarded for having a high grade in the class is much higher than the amount of points for taking the
same class at a regular level. An A in a regular class is worth four points, but an A in an AP class is
worth 4.08 points. Those .08 points can add up quickly if a student is taking more than one AP
course. While doing well in an AP course is rewarded handsomely, doing poorly in an AP course can
have a negative impact on a student's GPA. As stated above, the .08 that comes with the course can
add up, what with multiple classes

The Day The Saucers Came Neil Gaiman Analysis
Development of a Similar Theme in Narratives
"On the saucer day, which was zombie day, it was Ragnarok also, and the television screens showed
us A ship built of dead–men's nails, a serpent, a wolf..." Alienation is a state of being cut off or
separate from a person or group of people. A similar theme in "The Day The Saucers Came" by Neil
Gaiman, "The Fun They Had" by Isaac Asimov, and the video, "The Last Job on Earth" is alienation
although each narrative develops this theme in a myriad of ways.
In the video, "The Last Job on Earth", the theme of alienation was shown in many different ways. To
start, one way this was shown was that in the futuristic world, there were no longer human jobs.
According to the video, machines took jobs. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To start, alienation is shown when outworldly beings appeared. According to the text, "On the
saucer–zombie–battling–gods/day the floodgates broke/And each of us was engulfed by genies and
sprites/Offering us wishes and wonders and eternities/And charm and cleverness and true/brave
hearts and pots of gold/While giants feefofummed across/the land and killer bees,/..."This shows
that alienation is developed because the invading beings came, the humans become the outsider
species and became the minority. Furthermore, alienation is shown when the humans minds are
blown. According to the text, "On the saucer day, which was zombie day, it was/Ragnarok also, and
the television screens showed us/A ship built of dead–men's nails, a serpent, a wolf,/All bigger than
the mind could hold,/..." This shows that alienation is developed because when one doesn't
understand something, it's easy to be alienated/left out. According to the text, "You didn't notice any
of this because/you were sitting in your room, not doing anything/not even reading, not really,
just/looking at your telephone,/wondering if I was going to call." This shows that alienation is
developed because the person the narrator is referring to in the poem is totally oblivious to what's

Bat Lady Character Analysis
Harlan Coben brings excitement to the novel in many ways. All starting with the disappearance of
Mickey Bolitar's girlfriend, Ashley. Along with Mickey meeting the town's eerie old lady they
named "Bat Lady." And potentially revealing a connection between Bat Lady and the fatal crash that
killed Mickey's dad. Ashley Kent was a prim and proper young girl, the second Mickey saw her he
fell in love with her. While witnessing his father's death, and with his mother in rehab, Ashley is the
only reason Mickey's life is liveable, until she goes missing. Mickey then visits the go–go lounge, a
club where he's hoping to find Antoine Lemaire, who may be a possible suspect. Mickey uses a fake
ID to get into the club, and ends up being caught by the owner, and the bouncers. When Buddy Ray,
the owner of the club, asked Mickey why he was there, Mickey held up a picture of Ashley. Buddy
immediately recognized Ashely, due to him keeping her held captive, but earlier that week Ashley
had escaped, only making Buddy Ray more mad and proceeded to beat up Mickey for answers.
"Here's what's going to happen," Buddy Ray said to me, again with his quit lisp. "With Derrick
holding you in place, I'm going to sock you in the gut again. Harder this time. Then if you don't talk,
well take you to the dungeon" (Corben 187). "Bat Lady" was the name given to the old lady who
lived in the old dilapidated house. The people of newark rumored that she ate children and was 100
years old. One day when Mickey walked

Analysis Of Kurt Vonnegut 's ' Harrison Bergeron ' And '...
In life, there is something called an establishment. It is what makes people do activities a specific
way or perform a certain command from those who are deemed superior to them. There were two
authors who provided great examples of that lifestyle. Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. displayed this precisely
with the limitations given to the characters in "Harrison Bergeron". The Master Timekeeper from "
'Repent, Harlequin! ' Cried the Tick–Tock Man" by Harlan Ellison created the basis of having an
order and leading people by the control he has over their time. Through both of these stories, they
had a common struggle that wanted to change the examples they led people to mimic. They would

The Master Timekeeper wanted to use his establishment to keep the people under control with the
time they use while the Harlequin wanted people to take their time doing tasks and not worry about
being late, but instead, enjoy what is around them. In "Harrison Bergeron", the rule of the story is
that the law requires everyone to be equal. To ensure this, they gave handicaps, both physical and
mental, to the citizens of the United States because they believe it will guarantee that no one would
be stronger or smarter than anyone else. All of this was regulated by the United States Handicapper
General, Diana Moon Glampers, but there was one man who seeked to rebel against these handicaps
in his misson to gain control and power over everyone else. That man was none other than Harrison
Bergeron, and he made it clear when he invaded the ballerina studio and exclaimed,
""I am the Emperor!" cried Harrison. "Do you hear? I am the Emperor! Everybody must do what I
say at once!" He stamped his foot and the studio shook." "Even as I stand here" he bellowed,
"crippled, hobbled, sickened – I am a greater ruler than any man who ever lived! Now watch me
become what I can become!" Harrison tore the straps of his handicap harness like wet tissue paper,
tore straps guaranteed to support five thousand pounds." (Vonnegut)
As stated, Harrison believed that he could become so much more powerful without the handicaps
holding him back. It got to the point where he thought it

The main Character in the book that I read is Mickey Bolitar. He has blue eyes, short brown hair, is
six feet four inches and weighs just over two hundred pounds. He acts like a normal highschool kid
and he can be very curious sometimes. When he got curious about things in the book he usually got
in trouble with the police or with his uncle. Like when he was at the "Bat Lady's" house he went
inside without even knocking on the door and when he was inside, somehow the house caught on
fire and burned down. The police came and had arrested him for breaking and entering. That time
when he was curious he got in trouble with the police not his uncle. His personality is

went down when he got in trouble and not just it being told and described. The story came from
Mickey. It explains how he acts around other people and what his personality is like. That's why the
first person point of view is so important for this book. My first word that is very important is
murder, the connotative meaning is when someone is killed and the denotative definition is the
killing of another human being under conditions specifically covered in law. It's important to the
book because they are solving a murder case. My second word is protect, the connotative meaning of
it is to defend something or someone and the denotative definition is to defend or guard from attack,
invasion, loss, annoyance, insult, etc.; cover or shield from injury or danger. Its important to the
book because Mickey is willing to do anything to protect his friends and family from the killer. My
third word is mystery, the connotative meaning of the word is something you can't figure out and the
denotative definition is anything that is kept secret or remains unexplained or unknown. It's
important to the book because

The Chicago Teachers Union And Chicago Public Schools
Georgis, Donnell, Mike, Moose
For the second time in almost 4 years, over 350,000 Chicago Public School Students may not be
able to go to school because of the CTU Strike that is currently in progress today (The Washington
Post). The issue between the Chicago Teachers Union and Chicago Public Schools has not been
solved yet due to disagreements about the income received. The Chicago Teachers Union has made
offers to school administrations; however, the responses were not in their favor. The union has been
in progress of agreeing on a contract "since November 2011, [and the strike that occurred at the
time] was the first to hit the Windy City in 25 years" (Liebelson). The issue must have erupted due
to a misconception or a realization of problems occurring. Chicago Teachers Union choosing to
strike does not affect charter schools since they are not a part of Chicago Public Schools. The issue
of school strikes can be fixed by increasing the budgets and providing useful resources to teachers in
order to improve the level of education.
The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) Strike in 2012 affected every single Chicago Public School and
their Students in 2012. The strike affected about 600 public schools which is over 350, 000 students.
The CTU began negotiating their contract with CPS in November of 2011, but their demands were
not met. Since the negotiating did not solve the issue, the Chicago Teachers Union chose to organize
a strike for the first time in Chicago in 25 years.

Emmett Slaughter By The Old Pullman Company
Emmett Slaughter was walking through the old Pullman Company building. It was cold, all he could

but Emmet used to work there so he wanted to see it one last time, so he snuck inside to take one
good last look. Upon looking through the building he started to remember the Pullman company
strike that happened on May 11, 1894. That was the time he learned to fight for what he believes in
without violence.

`` Bartleby, The Scrivener, And Harlan Ellison 's ``...
According to the Merriam–Webster dictionary, sanity is "the condition of having a healthy mind [or]
the condition of being based on reason or good judgement" (Merriam–Webster). Using this
definition, the question to address would then be what constitutes having a healthy mind? Some
people believe that in order to be seen as having this you have to be "normal". For some this term is
the "equivalent of [being] oblivious and you [are] 'abnormal' when you [are] sentient, human, and
real" (Maisel, 2011). This concept of what is normal and what is not is dependent upon how
everyone in the society around them acts. Therefore, someone who is not deemed as being "normal"
cannot be seen as having a healthy mind and having a good sense of judgement because they are too
perceptive to the world around them. In Herman Melville's "Bartleby, the Scrivener" and Harlan
Ellison's " 'Repent, Harlequin!' Said the Ticktockman" the principal characters are ostracized by the
society's they live in for this very reason. Being that both of the characters are mindful enough to
rebel against what society expects of them, they can be perceived as exhibiting a form of "divinest
sense".
When one looks at the phrase "divinest sense" they would conclude that it means that the individual
possesses some form of god–like consciousness. Although as previously discussed, to the rest of
society the person would be ridden off as being insane because they are too aware of their
surroundings. The whole concept

The Pros And Cons Of AP Students
As AP students, im sure most – if not all– of us can recall the feeling of fatigue and anxiety of being
up at 2 am doing a major assignment for one or more AP courses. AP students have a lot to do
between extracurricular activities, jobs, homework. They need to be prepared for what an AP course
involves. Juggling all these activities makes it impossible to keep up a healthy lifestyle– according
to Stanford university, a recent national poll shows that more than 87 percent of U.S. high school
students get far less than the recommended eight to 10 hours of sleep each night. This is no surprise–
the extra tests, extra homework, on top of an already demanding schedule, can be brutal and leave
the student with little or no time to relax.
The stress obtained from taking AP courses are often times not worth it in the end. Ap courses are
meant to stimulate a college course, making it easier for students to adapt to college, and students
who take AP courses are typically more likely to succeed in college. But according to Denise Pope,

Most colleges allow students to pick their schedules so that they have only a few classes a day– if
there is more than one major test on the same day, college students can skip one and retake it on
another date so that they can focus on each test individually and give their education the time it
needs. Within Southington High School for example, the 8–period structure forces students to
switch between different classes rapidly. Multiple tests can be on the same day, and students cannot
go to only one of the tests so they are forced to cram while studying a bit for each test. The fault in
the type of scheduling ultimately forces students to become more stressed and not get as good as an

Analysis Of Said The Ticktockman By Harlan Ellison
Harlan Ellison is also a writer known for his work in science fiction among various mediums.
Ellison won the Nebula Award in 1965 for his short story "'Repent, Harlequin!' Said The

wrote screenplays for TV shows such as Star Trek and The Twilight Zone ("Harlan Ellison |

as a social critique on society's growing infatuation with time and efficiency. The story is set in a
dystopia in the future where time is valued above everything else. Every aspect of daily life is

Writing Goodly: The Decline of Linguistic Skill Essay
Few would argue with the statement that writing skills are in state of decline. It is readily apparent
that something needs to be done to resolve the issues that are preventing students from grasping the
fundamentals of composition. However, there is a divergence of opinion when it comes to
determining the cause of the nation's writing ails. Many blame technology, giving cell phones and
television particular attention. Others give technology a more indirect blame, claiming that email,
instant messaging, and cell phones have robbed students of a desire to learn proper writing skills.
While these ideas may bear some truth, the root of the problem lies within the instruction of writing,
which to a large extent is ineffective. The writing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Clearly, many adults, who represent the result of education, cannot produce the clear and concise
writing that effective workplace communication demands. This is a problem that comes not from a
failure to retain acquired skills, but a failure obtain the fundamental principles of composition. Sam
Dillon agrees, suggesting the problems at the corporate level can be traced back to high schools and
universities. Standardized tests, which provide a snapshot of student education, provide the
foundation of Dillon's argument. According to the College Board in 2009, both reading and writing
scores declined by one point while math scores held constant. In the past thirty years, critical
reading scores have declined by an average of four points. Conversely, math scores have increased
by twenty–two points over the same period ("SAT"). Though students show progress in other
academic areas, these SAT statistics show that writing has actually gotten worse, and college–level
English teachers agree with those results (Kling). An annual conference in Greeley, Colorado
(tellingly entitled "The Millennial Challenge: Working with Underprepared Writing Students"),
addressed common problems among university–level students and discussed possible causes. Many
professors asserted that technological gadgets such as cell phones and instant messaging "run

Whitman's Essay 'When I Heard The Learn' D Astronomer
A poet who would agree with Albert Einstein statement of "Education is not the learning of facts,
but the training of the mind to think" is Walt Whitman. For in his poem "When I Heard the Learn'd
Astronomer" he has his speaker try to learn through education then experience. Walt Whitman first
presents to our readers to a speaker who wants to learn astronomy and attends a lecture. By doing
this, Walt Whitman wants to illustrate the disadvantages of education and how it solely relies on
numbers and diagrams. Walt Whitman wants to emphasize the value of experience in his poem
through his use of imagery, sound, and syntax.
Through his writing, Walt Whitman tries to have his readers understand his statement by giving the
reader the ability to relate. In his poem "When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer" he has his speaker
in an educational setting listening to an astronomer give a lecture about astronomy. This setting is
easy to imagine and effective. The speakers describe that "proofs" (2), and "figures"(2) were all
presented to him with no further evidence or explanation given making the speaker "tired and sick"
(6). The speaker is now disinterested and disappointed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

for it was included in every line except of course for the last one. Walt Whitman did not provide any
type of closure until the ending "Looked up in perfect silence at the stars."(9) when the speaker was
satisfied because he knew that for the speaker it was not over until he learned from experience. After

Two prominent, but conflicting, interpretations are presented by Garrett Hardin and Elinor Ostrom.
Garrett Hardin first proposed in 1998 that the tragedy of the commons cannot be solved with a
technical solution, which he claims is the most socially acceptable type of solution. Hardin goes on
to point out and question social boundaries by challenging his reader to ask him or herself what is
"good" (Hardin 1244). He acknowledges that "good" is usually considered to be a varied concept
that is open to human interpretation and construction; however, "natural selection commensurates
the incommensurable" (1244). Hardin's proposal that freedom is the catalyst for ruin in a communal
society is one of his most controversial claims because he argues that autonomy leaves room for
selfish motivations that lead to the destruction of the overall good. For example, Hardin briefly
discusses world pollution. The atmosphere and oceans are shared resourced or "commons" for
which many people do not feel responsible, and thus, they are commons which have been damaged
and polluted, affecting both those culpable and inculpable of the created "cesspool" (1245). Hardin's
interpretation challenges traditional morals that stem

the society into which he has been planted. Harlan Ellison writes of conformity in his epic entitled
"'Repent Harlequin!' Said the Ticktockman". And it is through his piece that he paints the idea of
non–conformism. Ellison implements in media res organization, crafts a programmed society,
interpolates monotonous diction, and alludes to Thoreau's "Civil Disobedience" in respect to serving
society; all in an effort to stir in readers the true danger that goes hand in hand with depravity in

Ellison is paralleling this particular society to that of a Cuba, an Iraq, a North Korea. We as readers
know very well the dangers of this type of organization. We recognize its flawed nature, its obvious
need of repair and reform. We know that this type of systematic totalitarian rule is neither acceptable
nor free from imperfection.
Ellison elects to employ bleak, mechanical diction juxtaposed with glimmers of uniqueness in order
to contrast the ideas of individuality and uniformity. He begins by offering us the dark and bland
description of this society by using words such as "cubicles of the hierarchy"[2],"metronomic"[2],
and "practiced motion"[3]. Line after line is sprinkled with bleakness as the reader finds no appeal in
the conforming society. He then juxtaposes the mechanical and uniform diction with that of color,
joy, and hope. This is first expressed in the mention of "jelly beans"[4]. This particular word appeals
to the emotions of the reader and brings out feelings of happiness, fun, and uniqueness. We favor the
Harlequin over the Society. We grow fond of what he represents. This is only furthered later on in
the tale as Ellison continues to insert a plethora of diction choices that further darken the corrupt
totalitarian regime. Ellison also conveys the idea of repetition through the phrase "And so it goes.
And so it goes. And so it goes"[5].

Black Mirror, By Suzanne Collins, And Harrison Bergeron Essay
Technology has made numerous positive contributions to society in a very short period of time.
Although, it also has a way to be intrusive and frightening. Three in class stories that display the
fictional victimization of lower status people through technology are: "Repent, Harlequin!" said the
Ticktockman by Harlan Ellison, Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, and Harrison Bergeron by Kurt
Vonnegut, Jr. A Netflix series and British television program called Black Mirror by Charlie Brooker
also expresses many of the same recurring themes of technological based exploitation in Episode 2
'Fifteen Million Merits'. There are multiple overlapping themes between these four pieces of work
and today's society.
The description of Black Mirror episode 2: 'Fifteen Million Merits' is "In the near future, everyone is
confined to a life of strange physical drudgery. The only way to escape is to enter the 'Hot Shot '
talent show and pray you can impress the judges." Each member of this fictional world must earn

Persuasive Articles on Gun Control Essays
Persuasive Articles on Gun Control
Will wrote his ... Show

Franken was also able to downplay the usefulness of a firearm by including a series of sarcastic tips
for tragedy in a home. For example, "1. Keep the gun loaded... 2. Put the gun in an unlocked
drawer... 3. Rest assured."1 Where Franken's article comes up short is the use of hypothetical
numbers to exaggerate and intensify the deadliness of guns. His sarcasm adds diversity to his piece,
but should be used sparingly. Franken's conclusion causes his argument to lose its effectiveness,
after building his case it just seems ridiculous and out of place.

`` Repent, Harlequin, By Harlan Ellison
Harlan Ellison uses strong imagery in his short story "'Repent, Harlequin!' said the Ticktockman" to
better develop the characters and setting. The personalities of both the Harlequin and the
Ticktockman are developed through Ellison's imagery of their physical forms and of their personas.
The dull setting of the short story is created through the author's imagery of machinery, particularly
clockwork, and Mondrian arrangements. Ellison's use of imagery allows the reader to pull from this
story deeper, more significant meaning than what appears on the surface. According to White, "the
disruptive and rebellious Harlequin is an anomaly: the only human being distinguishable from
machines" (White, 1). In order to clearly establish the Harlequin as the only individual within his
society, Ellison employs the use of strong imagery to cause him to stand out among the rest of the
characters. One way that Ellison does this is using rather outlandish language to describe the
Harlequin. Aside from being a "personality," which in and of itself is outrageous to the System, the
Harlequin is also a "laughing, irresponsible japer of jabberwocky and jive" (953, 955). This imagery
of a jester or a jokester creates the idea that the Harlequin is merely a nuisance to his society rather
than a dangerous rebellious force. When the Harlequin is flying the air–boat that he uses to drop
jelly beans on to the "metronomic" Timkin workers, he is not described as merely flying this boat
over the people

What I Would Never Have Believed That Concepts From Economics
Prior to writing this, I would never have believed that concepts from economics would have fit into
my decisions in course selections. But, now looking at the individual concepts and what they really
entail, it makes perfect sense.
As a sophomore picking out classes, I had free choice whether to enter the CP course, the Honors
course or the AP course. The only reason why I was able to choose between these three courses was
because of my grades. This is similar to the concept of "barriers to entry" in economics; the students
are the new firms, the courses are the industries, and the different grades are the actual barrier into
the courses. During sophomore year, I maintained an average grade in the honors history course of

For instance, some of the benefits included more credit, a more interesting topic, and learning more.
On the other hand, the costs included more time dedicated, a harder course, and the AP test. These
costs were of a lesser importance than the benefits were, plus, the AP test could be beneficial. By
using this concept, I determined that taking the AP course did benefit me more in the long run than
taking the honors course. One of the major benefits that I looked at was whether taking this course
would help benefit me in the long run. I used the concept of "human capital", thinking that with this
course and my other "collective" knowledge that I would gather from other classes, I was preparing
myself to be a well–rounded student and so possibly more successful in the future. In taking the AP
course, I would learn a slightly different topic than the Honors or CP classes, and at a higher level of
difficulty. I would definitely learn the topic and broaden my knowledge, but I would also learn more
skills, like managing time wisely and different studying skills for a harder course. On the other hand,
the costs of taking the AP course was like the concept of "opportunity cost", the things I had to give
up in order to take the course. For one, I would have to give up taking an easier course, and perhaps
a better grade, if I opted to take the AP course. I would also have to give up more of my time to
prepare for the course, hence eliminating

Customer Retention
Customer retention is as important as customer acquisition because the cost associated with

African American And American Writing
African–American writing is the collection of writing created in the United States by journalists of
African heritage. It starts with the works of such late 18th–century essayists as Phillis Wheatley.
Prior to the high purpose of slave stories, African–American writing was commanded via self–
portraying profound accounts. African–American writing came to ahead of schedule high focuses
with slave accounts of the nineteenth century. The Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s was a period of

The Undercover Parent The title of the essay is The Undercover Parents, which was written by

his main ideas and thoughts regarding the use of spyware by parents to monitor children. He says
that installing a spyware on the computer used by children, especially those in the teenage years, can
help parents track what actually their children view on computers. In the essay, the author says that

Coben says that this is usually through the social networks, which many children visit on computers.
He gives an example of how a boy and a girl finally committed suicide after being bullied on the
internet. Coben says that through the spyware, parents get to know hidden acts and intentions of
their children. The author says that generally parents have good intentions toward their child and so
they "start conversations and be a safety net" (p.22) for their children. The essay provides very
helpful hints to parents in child rearing. Coben gives vital ideas on how parents can track their
children and uncover unhealthy behaviours, which may be destroyers in life. He also warns parents
of being too involved in children's affairs as it results in strained relationships. Coben also
encourages parents to stay calm and open up to their children that they are actually spying on them.
The ideas presented in the essay are very helpful and instructional for parents. In as much as the
essay presents valid arguments on the advantages of spyware, Coben fails to give reasons as to why
it should not be installed. This makes the essay biased on installation of the program. In conclusion,
the essay presents important ideas on reasons for installing spyware on computers. The program is
helpful for parents in tracking children's behaviour and putting necessary security measures.

him, he's lost too much already. On his search for Ashley he meets the Bat Lady who tells him his
father is in fact still alive. But Mickey watched his father die right in front of him. With this
information he breaks into her house and finds nothing. Except for a symbol that he has now seen
everywhere. A butterfly. Now his mind is storming with thoughts of if his father really is alive. He
continues his search, and he won't stop until he knows the truth. In the novel, Shelter by Harlan
Coben the author uses multiple literary elements such as symbolism, conflict and foreshadowing.
The first literary element the author utilizes is symbolism. When Mickey Bolitar first breaks into the
Bat Lady's house, (who is also known as the strange old woman everyone is afraid, and who also
never comes out of her house.) As he walks through Bat lady's house he encounters a black and

Greed In The Hobbit : The Consequences Of Fairytales
As a child, my favorite story growing up was not the typical fairytales of most kids youth. My older
brother would often tell me his favorite stories from the X–Men. The kind, wise, and caring
Professor X, constantly at odds with the cruel and cunning Magneto were the backdrop to many of
the stories I was told at that time. Only as I grew older did I realize how much of deeper meaning
those tales had within them, and the lessons it held. The conflict between mutants and humans
mirror that of the civil rights movement. With Professor X and Magneto as stand–ins for Martin
Luther King Jr and Malcolm X respectively. Realizing this I began to look closer to the stories
around me. Looking at the stories that we have read so far, we see a consistent moral shared
between the books. That is greed, and how it leads to the ultimate destruction of the character who
exhibit it. Greed is the downfall for Smaug from The Hobbit, Martin from The Hell–Bound Train
and Donny from Jeffty is Five. In The Hobbit, it is easy to see how greed is a vice for the characters.
The main and clearest example is Smaug the dragon. From the beginning of the story, we are told of
the greedy nature of the dragons, how they would burn and sack villages for the treasure they hold.
Smaug's biggest example of greed is when he takes the treasure from the dwarven city, Dale. Thus
sparking the quest to reclaim and slay the dragon. This quest leads to Smaug's ultimate demise. It
can also be seen in the writing style

Summary Of Samuel Delany's Racism And Science Fiction
As a black man, Samuel Delany has experienced discrimination and racism in a number of settings.
However, as a Science Fiction writer he mostly explores racism in that community. Samuel
Delany's, "Racism and Science Fiction" explores how "Racism is a system. As such, it is fueled as
much by chance as by hostile intentions and equally the best intentions as well. It is whatever
systematically acclimates people, of all colors, to become comfortable with the isolation and
segregation of the races, on a visual, social, or economic level"(31). Delany blames social traditions,
and material and economic conditions for supporting the system. And not actual individuals. Delany
supports his argument by giving three examples of when he has experienced racism in science
fiction. The issue of racism in science fiction is presented by Delany when he tells his readers of an
encounter with Isaac Asimov, his convention book signing partner, and his habitual panel placement
with a fellow writer. While Delany was walking back to his seat after winning an award for "Aye,
and Gomorrrah" fellow writer Isaac Asimov pulled him aside and jokingly said,"You know, Chip,
we only voted you those awards because you're negro"(18). Delany, although realizing that Asimov
was using satire to say that the color of his skin had no part in the voting decision. Realized that
unintentionally or not, Asimov was saying that no matter Delany's achievements he will always be
"Negro". This fits in to Delany's explanation of what systematic racism does, it acclimates people of
color to be comfortable with the isolation of races. Because Delany is a black writer he will
foremost be know as a black writer before anything else, and will always be grouped in that
category. This well intentioned joke fuels the system that is racism.
As mentioned before. Systematic racism can also be fueled by chance. During a convention where
writers were grouped together for book signing. Nalo Hopkinson and Delany, the only two black
writers attending the convention, were sat together. Delany's friend was in charge of the book
signing scheduling and said that they were sat by a program and, "Well, certainly there's nothing
wrong with that pairing. But the point is, I

  • 2. Persuasive Articles About Gun Control Essay Persuasive articles about Gun Control Persuading an audience can be done in several different fashions, one of which is Hugh Rank's Model of Persuasion. Rank's model states that two major strategies are used to achieve the particular goal of persuasion. These strategies are nicely set into two main schemas; the first method is to exaggerate an aspect of something, known as "intensify." While the second is to discredit it, which is referred to as "downplay." Al Franken, Jeffrey Snyder, Harlan Ellison, and George Will, have all written persuasive articles about gun control. In reading all of the various articles on gun control by authors, I found George F. Will's The Last Word to be the most persuasive. Will wrote his piece about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The least persuasive essay out of the four was Harlan Ellison's An Edge in My Voice. Ellison presents his argument in a style that seems to me is more of a disgruntled rambling about both famous and infamous people that die from gun shot, than an article about gun control. Ellison spends the first few pages asking the reader if they cried when a certain person died; he begins with famous people such as Martin Luther King, Bobby Kennedy, and John Lennon, and then moves on to more obscure examples. Instead of trying to build an argument, Ellison seemed to be more caught up with anger and the notion of conspiracies. He does however try to use the "intensify" technique of Rank's model, to persuade the reader of the horror of deaths caused by guns and their importance. Although Ellison did try to persuade his audience in a different manor, I felt it was ineffective at best, due to his repetition and exaggeration. From these four articles written by Franken, Snyder, Ellison, and Will I personally found Will's piece to be the most persuasive with Franken's not far behind. Will's approach was more formal while Franken's style was more satirical, but I felt both authors were able to incorporate Rank's model and persuade the reader more subtlety than the other authors Sources 1. • 3. The Elements Of The Genre Of Speculative Fiction Next to being neo–slave narratives, Kindred and Beloved, as well as Who Fears Death, are examples of the genre of Speculative Fiction. This type of literature features supernatural and/or futuristic elements. Is serves as an umbrella term and includes science fiction, fantasy, literary fiction, supernatural fiction, horror, dystopia, utopia, (post–)apocalyptic and superhero elements, as well as their combinations (Jackson and Moody–Freeman, 127). Hence, "in Speculative Fiction the action of the story can take place in a culture that never existed, a world we know nothing of, or an earth that might have been or might be" (Shade, 2). In other words, speculative literature includes all texts that take place "in a universe slightly different from our own" (Wyatt, 1–2). Language is "not merely descriptive but also functions as a form of word building" (Burnett, 137), as neologisms can be both metaphorical and literal in this genre. Speculative Fiction ranges back to ancient history and has been pervading humanity from the beginning. Furby and Hines state that the human has always been a "story–telling ape" (Furby and Hines, 10), as we get access to the world through the narrative. So–called taproot texts, the very first fictional texts, such as The Epic of Gilgamesh, still form the basis for modern authors to draw ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Still, until recently, it has not given much attention to issues of race and ethnicity in the context of imagined futures. Historically, the focus of the genre has been on social and political commentary, as well as responses to social, cultural and technological changes. • 4. Analysis Of The Undercover Parent Every day teenagers use the internet, whether it's on their phones or on the computers at school or at home. Their lives are practically centered around it. They're connecting with each other on social media such as: Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, and even online video games, and this has is benefits, but it can also have some negative and possibly dangerous situations. The internet is not a safe haven for anyone or anything. In the article "The Undercover Parent" the author, Harlan Coben, makes the argument that spyware is alright to be used by parents on their kids computers as long as the parents are using the software responsibly. I agree with Coben's statements because of his solid arguments of dangerous conversations, privacy, and bullying. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One argument that many people mention is that spyware is an invasion of privacy. As a teenager myself, I value the whole idea of privacy. The use of spyware to monitor your child's computer is on the borderline of invasion of that privacy; however the use of none of it is on the borderline and even beyond the point negligence. Coben mentions this idea of privacy on the internet that, "One of the most popular arguments against spyware is the claim that you are reading your teenager's every thought, that in today's world, a computer is the little key–locked diary of the past. But posting thoughts on the Internet isn't the same thing as hiding them under your mattress."(Coben 1). In reality, there is no real form of privacy on the internet. What you post there will forever be there and can be seen by anyone no matter how many passwords or locks you put on it. However most teens and kids would still over look this idea and consider the use of spyware an invasion of their privacy, and it can be. If you are monitoring every single conversation your child has, then that's crossing the line and invading the privacy of your child. There is a difference between being responsible and being nosy. You as a parent are there to look out for dangerous chatter or possible conversations that look and sound concerning. You are not there to listen in on what teacher they hate, or who they have a crush on, or if they're crying over how a book ended. However, not monitoring at all is practically a form of neglect. Being a parent it is your responsibility to protect your child from the possible dangers of the world, whether it is in real life or online. Providing no form of protection or even checking on your child's activities online can put them at high risk of getting hurt whether it is emotionally or physically. The dangers are out there and it is worth crossing the border of privacy in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This year has been a challenge. It has brought change in the worst ways but only to motivate me to do better. In order to understand you must know that when I first began high school as a freshman I had a perseverance and the focus to succeed and be the best in everything I did. I knew what I was aiming for and I there was no stopping me from getting there. Unfortunately I lost track of this motivation and somehow things just kept getting worse. Procrastination became an issue and whenever I thought I was getting back on top of things there was always a situation that had most of my attention like my grandfather's death or friendship arguments. Things that I shouldn't have let get in the way of my success. Paying more attention to these personal problems rather than my school work may have cost me a perfect transcript of straight A's and B´s as well as a 4.0 gpa and i know there is no greater regret than allowing yourself to fail but this failure has served me well. There are multiple different things going on, such as classes to choose, who to be friends with, deciding on colleges and careers, and much more. There are many classes to choose from. Once classes have been chosen, it is now time to pick what level is most beneficial: regular, honors, or Advanced Placement. But be warned, Advanced Placement classes do not benefit US students because they are too rushed and the students are not prepared to take them. It is understood that many parents believe that AP classes can improve their GPA, prepare them for college, and teach them many important skills; such as leadership, determination, and critical thinking. Taking an AP class, even one, can change a student's GPA. The common misconception is that the courses being taken can improve a one's GPA. It is indeed true that doing well in an AP course can drastically improve a student's GPA. The amount of points awarded for having a high grade in the class is much higher than the amount of points for taking the same class at a regular level. An A in a regular class is worth four points, but an A in an AP class is worth 4.08 points. Those .08 points can add up quickly if a student is taking more than one AP course. While doing well in an AP course is rewarded handsomely, doing poorly in an AP course can have a negative impact on a student's GPA. • 19. `` Bartleby, The Scrivener, And Harlan Ellison 's ``... According to the Merriam–Webster dictionary, sanity is "the condition of having a healthy mind [or] the condition of being based on reason or good judgement" (Merriam–Webster). Using this definition, the question to address would then be what constitutes having a healthy mind? Some people believe that in order to be seen as having this you have to be "normal". For some this term is the "equivalent of [being] oblivious and you [are] 'abnormal' when you [are] sentient, human, and real" (Maisel, 2011). This concept of what is normal and what is not is dependent upon how everyone in the society around them acts. Therefore, someone who is not deemed as being "normal" cannot be seen as having a healthy mind and having a good sense of judgement because they are too perceptive to the world around them. In Herman Melville's "Bartleby, the Scrivener" and Harlan Ellison's " 'Repent, Harlequin!' Said the Ticktockman" the principal characters are ostracized by the society's they live in for this very reason. Being that both of the characters are mindful enough to rebel against what society expects of them, they can be perceived as exhibiting a form of "divinest sense". When one looks at the phrase "divinest sense" they would conclude that it means that the individual possesses some form of god–like consciousness. AP students have a lot to do between extracurricular activities, jobs, homework. They need to be prepared for what an AP course involves. The stress obtained from taking AP courses are often times not worth it in the end. • 23. Writing Goodly: The Decline of Linguistic Skill Essay Few would argue with the statement that writing skills are in state of decline. It is readily apparent that something needs to be done to resolve the issues that are preventing students from grasping the fundamentals of composition. However, there is a divergence of opinion when it comes to determining the cause of the nation's writing ails. Many blame technology, giving cell phones and television particular attention. Others give technology a more indirect blame, claiming that email, instant messaging, and cell phones have robbed students of a desire to learn proper writing skills. While these ideas may bear some truth, the root of the problem lies within the instruction of writing, which to a large extent is ineffective. The writing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Clearly, many adults, who represent the result of education, cannot produce the clear and concise writing that effective workplace communication demands. This is a problem that comes not from a failure to retain acquired skills, but a failure obtain the fundamental principles of composition. Sam Dillon agrees, suggesting the problems at the corporate level can be traced back to high schools and universities. Standardized tests, which provide a snapshot of student education, provide the foundation of Dillon's argument. According to the College Board in 2009, both reading and writing scores declined by one point while math scores held constant. In the past thirty years, critical reading scores have declined by an average of four points. Conversely, math scores have increased by twenty–two points over the same period ("SAT"). Though students show progress in other academic areas, these SAT statistics show that writing has actually gotten worse, and college–level English teachers agree with those results (Kling). An annual conference in Greeley, Colorado (tellingly entitled "The Millennial Challenge: Working with Underprepared Writing Students"), addressed common problems among university–level students and discussed possible causes. Whitman's Essay 'When I Heard The Learn' D Astronomer A poet who would agree with Albert Einstein statement of "Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think" is Walt Whitman. For in his poem "When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer" he has his speaker try to learn through education then experience. Walt Whitman first presents to our readers to a speaker who wants to learn astronomy and attends a lecture. By doing this, Walt Whitman wants to illustrate the disadvantages of education and how it solely relies on numbers and diagrams. Walt Whitman wants to emphasize the value of experience in his poem through his use of imagery, sound, and syntax. Through his writing, Walt Whitman tries to have his readers understand his statement by giving the reader the ability to relate. In his poem "When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer" he has his speaker in an educational setting listening to an astronomer give a lecture about astronomy. Two prominent, but conflicting, interpretations are presented by Garrett Hardin and Elinor Ostrom. Garrett Hardin first proposed in 1998 that the tragedy of the commons cannot be solved with a technical solution, which he claims is the most socially acceptable type of solution. Hardin goes on to point out and question social boundaries by challenging his reader to ask him or herself what is "good" (Hardin 1244). He acknowledges that "good" is usually considered to be a varied concept that is open to human interpretation and construction; however, "natural selection commensurates the incommensurable" (1244). Hardin's proposal that freedom is the catalyst for ruin in a communal society is one of his most controversial claims because he argues that autonomy leaves room for selfish motivations that lead to the destruction of the overall good. For example, Hardin briefly discusses world pollution. The atmosphere and oceans are shared resourced or "commons" for which many people do not feel responsible, and thus, they are commons which have been damaged and polluted, affecting both those culpable and inculpable of the created "cesspool" (1245). When a man conforms he displays obedience towards the regulations of the society into which he has been planted. Harlan Ellison writes of conformity in his epic entitled "'Repent Harlequin!' Said the Ticktockman". And it is through his piece that he paints the idea of non–conformism. Ellison implements in media res organization, crafts a programmed society, interpolates monotonous diction, and alludes to Thoreau's "Civil Disobedience" in respect to serving society; all in an effort to stir in readers the true danger that goes hand in hand with depravity in leadership, while also magnifying the importance of a single ... Ellison elects to employ bleak, mechanical diction juxtaposed with glimmers of uniqueness in order to contrast the ideas of individuality and uniformity. He begins by offering us the dark and bland description of this society by using words such as "cubicles of the hierarchy"[2],"metronomic"[2], and "practiced motion"[3]. Line after line is sprinkled with bleakness as the reader finds no appeal in the conforming society. He then juxtaposes the mechanical and uniform diction with that of color, joy, and hope. Three in class stories that display the fictional victimization of lower status people through technology are: "Repent, Harlequin!" said the Ticktockman by Harlan Ellison, Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, and Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. A Netflix series and British television program called Black Mirror by Charlie Brooker also expresses many of the same recurring themes of technological based exploitation in Episode 2 'Fifteen Million Merits'. There are multiple overlapping themes between these four pieces of work and today's society. The description of Black Mirror episode 2: 'Fifteen Million Merits' is "In the near future, everyone is confined to a life of strange physical drudgery. The only way to escape is to enter the 'Hot Shot ' talent show and pray you can impress the judges." Each member of this fictional world must earn points by watching forced programming such as the reality show 'Hot Shot', and riding a stationary bike that powers this technology based world. Franken was also able to downplay the usefulness of a firearm by including a series of sarcastic tips for tragedy in a home. For example, "1. Keep the gun loaded... 2. His sarcasm adds diversity to his piece, but should be used sparingly. Franken's conclusion causes his argument to lose its effectiveness, after building his case it just seems ridiculous and out of place. • 31. `` Repent, Harlequin, By Harlan Ellison Harlan Ellison uses strong imagery in his short story "'Repent, Harlequin!' said the Ticktockman" to better develop the characters and setting. The personalities of both the Harlequin and the Ticktockman are developed through Ellison's imagery of their physical forms and of their personas. The dull setting of the short story is created through the author's imagery of machinery, particularly clockwork, and Mondrian arrangements. Ellison's use of imagery allows the reader to pull from this story deeper, more significant meaning than what appears on the surface. According to White, "the disruptive and rebellious Harlequin is an anomaly: the only human being distinguishable from machines" (White, 1). In order to clearly establish the Harlequin as the only individual within his society, Ellison employs the use of strong imagery to cause him to stand out among the rest of the characters. One way that Ellison does this is using rather outlandish language to describe the Harlequin. Aside from being a "personality," which in and of itself is outrageous to the System, the Harlequin is also a "laughing, irresponsible japer of jabberwocky and jive" (953, 955). This imagery of a jester or a jokester creates the idea that the Harlequin is merely a nuisance to his society rather than a dangerous rebellious force. When the Harlequin is flying the air–boat that he uses to drop jelly beans on to the "metronomic" Timkin workers, he is not described as merely flying this boat over the people ... By using this concept, I determined that taking the AP course did benefit me more in the long run than taking the honors course. • 39. Summary Of Samuel Delany's Racism And Science Fiction As a black man, Samuel Delany has experienced discrimination and racism in a number of settings. However, as a Science Fiction writer he mostly explores racism in that community. Samuel Delany's, "Racism and Science Fiction" explores how "Racism is a system. As such, it is fueled as much by chance as by hostile intentions and equally the best intentions as well. It is whatever systematically acclimates people, of all colors, to become comfortable with the isolation and segregation of the races, on a visual, social, or economic level"(31). Delany blames social traditions, and material and economic conditions for supporting the system. And not actual individuals. Delany supports his argument by giving three examples of when he has experienced racism in science fiction. The issue of racism in science fiction is presented by Delany when he tells his readers of an encounter with Isaac Asimov, his convention book signing partner, and his habitual panel placement with a fellow writer. While Delany was walking back to his seat after winning an award for "Aye, and Gomorrrah" fellow writer Isaac Asimov pulled him aside and jokingly said,"You know, Chip, we only voted you those awards because you're negro"(18). Delany, although realizing that Asimov was using satire to say that the color of his skin had no part in the voting decision. Realized that unintentionally or not, Asimov was saying that no matter Delany's achievements he will always be "Negro". This fits in to Delany's explanation of what systematic racism does, it acclimates people of color to be comfortable with the isolation of races. Because Delany is a black writer he will foremost be know as a black writer before anything else, and will always be grouped in that category. This well intentioned joke fuels the system that is racism. As mentioned before. Systematic racism can also be fueled by chance. During a convention where writers were grouped together for book signing. Nalo Hopkinson and Delany, the only two black writers attending the convention, were sat together. Delany's friend was in charge of the book signing scheduling and said that they were sat by a program and, "Well, certainly there's nothing wrong with that pairing. But the point is, I ...
