Social Equality And Political Freedom
A) It is unsurprising that social equality and political freedom are positively correlated with
environmental protection and sustainability. This is observed as as environmental problems bear
down disproportionately upon the poor, who do not share the same equalities and freedoms as others
(Agyeman et al., p. 1). This relationship exists due to increased political power enjoyed by the
wealthy and required corporate profit maximization for shareholders. Political power and voracious
desire for profits is a dangerous combination. Put together, these two components form a positive
feedback loop because the wealthier someone becomes, the most political power he/she gains. This
relationship results in facilitated cost externalization on lower ... Show more content on

(Agyeman et al., p. 6). This report serves as further evidence of the environmental injustices faced
by minorities who do not have the power to face the corporations who own the hazardous waste
facilities. It is laughable to think of what would occur if such a facility was proposed in Beverly
Hills or Montecito because the citizens would be up in arms with many lawyers and politicians.
Because predominantly ethnic and poor communities do not have such resources, they are unfairly
subject to pollution which results from profit maximization. In conclusion, corporations extracting
additional revenues damages the health of poor neighborhoods who do not have the capacity to
resist the pollution in their homes. Of the various definitions for "sustainability" and "sustainable
development" put forth by Agyeman, Bullard, and Evans, the most compelling and useful defines
one sustainability as "the need to ensure a better quality of life for all, now, and into the future, in a
just and equitable manner, while living within the limits of supporting ecosystems (Agyeman et al.,
p. 2). This definition is particularly suitable to sustainability because it captures its social justice
component rather than portraying it as a solely environmental issue. Another key part is the
mentioning of intra–generational equity which is crucial because many people fighting for
sustainability will not be able to see the fruits of their labor but must still

The First Amendment Of Students To Free Speech Zones
The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution authorized citizens with the freedom of religion,
speech, press and assembly. This amendment also goes to the college students. However, colleges
limited the students constitutional rights by enforcing the "free speech zones". Colleges are places
where it enable students to encounter new and challenging ideas through open debates, but free
speech zones limited this. You can only express your ideas in the free speech zones, nowhere else.
This can be related to burning the flag (an action that intended to make a political point against a
country or its policies), if you can't express your ideas anywhere you wants, doesn't it also indicates
a person can't randomly choose a place to burn the flag, it have to be in a specific area. Both theses
is a way to express your rights as a citizens of U.S. Therefore, colleges shouldn't restrict the political
speech of students to free speech zones. For instance, students went to colleges to learn more about
the world around them and to encounter people from different backgrounds. Students would be able
to expands their knowledge and form their own opinions about the government and its policies, but
it won't happen if colleges restrict it to free speech zones. According to the text, American Flag
Stands for Tolerance, it states; " Each individual is to have the freedom to develop by his or her own
lights, and not by the command of officialdom. That requires not just the right to be let

The Freedom Of Political Communication
Introduction: The following piece is to analyse the implied freedom of political communication, and
in doing this an understanding of both the principle and why the courts are so hesitant to apply the
principle will be developed. In its essence the implied freedom to political communication is the
freedom given to the public for freedom of speech of a political nature. Evidence of where this
freedom was not given could be seen during the chairman Mao rule in china, where the Chinese
believed that the chairman was essentially God and speaking bad of him would result in biblical
destruction of life, and as so currently in north Korea under the Kim Jung Un rule. There are a
number of cases that have developed the constitutionally implied ... Show more content on

The source of the freedom: It is extremely important to understand the High Courts positioning on
the sources of the freedom because it is essentially the precursor to the courts positioning on the
nature, scope, content and application of the freedom. For a number or reasons the ACTV and the
Nationwide case are considered together when looking into the implied freedom of political
communication, one reason being that they were both decided on the same day, but more so because
they both identify the thought pattern behind the freedom. The ACTV case came about when a
number of broadcasting corporations, as well as the NSW government challenged a commonwealth
legislative amendment, pt IIIID of the Broadcasting and television Act 1942 (CTH), after a
commonwealth parliamentary inquiry that found that the high cost and low quality of advertising
was harmful to the Australian political process. the nationwide news case resulted in similar
processes however the cases could not have been more juxtaposed. provisions under the industrial
relations Act 1988 (CTH) made it an offence to bring the industrial relations commission or one of it
members into notoriety. The provisions were challenged in the case after one of the newspapers
columnist accused the commissioner

Internet Freedom And Political Oppression
An immensely prominent aspect of today's society is technology, which has provided the world with
the internet. Though the internet has provided many positive benefits, it has also brought along
many negative aspects. In Evgeny Morozov's article, "Technology's Role in Revolution. Internet
Freedom and Political Oppression" the authors argument revolves around cyber–utopianism and
realism in regard to the internets actual function. Morozov's article attempts to convince the reader
the internet is a rather negative tool due to how the function of the internet has been more beneficial
to governments by allowing the spread of propaganda and legitimacy, and its aid in authoritarianism.
Morozov mainly focuses on how many people often seem to forget how the internet carries negative
aspects, resulting in cyber utopianism, "a naïve belief in the emancipatory nature of online
communication that rests on a stubborn refusal to acknowledge its downsides." Morozov argues that
cyber utopianism is not a realistic way of viewing the internet due to how the internet operates
throughout different countries and because of the effect the internet has had on authoritarianism.
Instead of the internet being a tool for the oppressed, Morozov suggests that it has become a bigger
aid to governments. Though I do think that the internet is an important aid in helping with world
issues, I do agree that there are more negative consequences. This is evident considering some
countries barely have access

What Is Political Correctness Or A Violation Of Your...
Betancur, Pg,1 Political correctness or a violation of your freedom of speech? In George Orwell's
book, nineteen eighty–four, Orwell writes of a fictional totalitarian government in which all
residents must speak a language called "newspeak". Newspeak is a language created by the
government in order to limit free will, self expression and freedom of thought. Unlike the citizens in
Orwell's book, Americans have the right to express their opinions however they'd like without being
ostracised by the majority, or do they? Over the last couple decades the term "politically correct" has
garnered major attention and been used to describe a type of speech in which vocabulary, policies
and actions that are intended to avoid offense to members

Political Freedom: Arendt and de Tocqueville Essay
Political Freedom: Arendt and de Tocqueville Freedom in America emanates from the state of
political freedom held by the citizens. Both Hannah Arendt and Alexis de Tocqueville provide
criticism of the apparent shape freedom maintains in America as well as insight regarding how they
perceive true political freedom. By using the observations and criticisms of de Tocqueville and the
vision of Arendt, the position of modern America and its relation to the ideals of political freedom
can be understood. It is necessary to understand de Tocqueville's observation of equality in order to
make the distinction of democracy and how freedom relates to it. According to de Tocqueville,

The collapse of public responsibilities is rooted in the growth of private desires. Alexis de
Tocqueville takes democracy down a miserable path where citizens become divided and
governments become despotic and centralized. The morals of society collapse, connections dissolve
between citizens, and "freedom produces private animosities, but despotism gives birth to general
indifference" (de Tocqueville 195). Democracy in America does not end in despotic centralization; it
concludes with the realization of the need for political freedom and the insinuation of power into the
citizens through associations. "In order to combat the evils which equality may produce, there is
only one effectual remedy, ––namely, political freedom (de Tocqueville 197). Political salvation in
America does not seep from the national government, nor does it fester within the states themselves.
De Tocqueville recognizes associations, which are the political forces beyond the sphere of
institutional government, as the necessary means of preserving political power of the majority and
political freedom in democracy.
If men living in democratic countries had no right and no inclination to associate for political
purposes, there independence would be in great jeopardy; but they might long preserve their wealth
and their cultivation; whereas, if they never acquired the habit of forming

Freedom Of Speech In Political Cartoons
The editorial, "weaponized words" written by Kate Manne and Jason Stanley is a cry for help in the
world of politics, which argues that the freedom of speech laws allow for the voices of dominant
social groups to overpower those that are inferior. This opinion is also shown in the third political
cartoon provided, that shows two different social groups under the same "freedom of speech"
umbrella, who have to deal with each other constantly trying to oppress the other. These laws make
it hard for any advancement of the lower–class societies.
The belief that the freedom of speech laws, or the first amendment, need to be more concrete can be
seen in the first political cartoon. This cartoon shows, again, two rival social groups, both are equals,
however one of the social groups is using their freedom of speech in a improper way, and they are
not being punished or prohibited in any way. This shows the oppression of a certain social group
that is not being stopped. Much like in the editorial, which states that Yale students are being
pressured into not wearing certain halloween costumes because they "offend others", the cartoon
shows the use of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author(s) stated that to truly have freedom of speech, one must be able to "question, contradict,
and even lampoon the assertions of others" meaning you should be able to disagree with another
person's claims, publicly if needed or wanted. This is shown in the second cartoon, where the NRA
member is telling people, in a rude and unnecessary manner, that he disagrees with what they are
doing. At the top of the cartoon, it states "if only we had an 'NRA' to defend the first amendment"
which shows the belief that the first amendment is not getting enough support and protection, yet
smaller programs like the NRA are standing up for less important things than the freedom of speech,

Freedom of Speech: Should We Be Spending Money to Transmit...
The debate on the constitutionality of spending money to transmit a message has been discussed for
some time now. Freedom of speech in the first amendment covers the right to express ideas without
unjustifiable government control. Should the government decide that spending money to send out a
message is unconstitutional or should they step back and remember that restrictions should not be
imposed regardless of the citizen or entity? Since freedom of speech should not be restricted for
anyone, money used to transmit a belief or an idea should not be restricted either. In order for speech
to be heard in almost any facet, money will have to be spent. Political speech requires money in
order for it to be heard and if someone decides to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main concern regarding money being used for political purposes or contributions expenses is
that the money will be used to boost approval ratings through media outlets. Monies used for airtime
that is contributed by the millions by corporations to help campaign for their choice in officials
should be considered their choice and their freedom of expression or speech. Many citizens only
have television or internet as their main form of education regarding elections, therefore this may
seem threatening to campaigns that may not have the wealthy corporations backing their progress.
The problem that we are facing as a nation is not whether someone or something gives money to a
political venture; it is simply education of the citizens that are voting. Any amount of manipulation
by money or campaigns should not matter if a person is educated properly on who they are voting
for and why.
Does the freedom of speech amendment protect the right to spend money to transmit a message? It
is difficult to determine the ideas of the framers that created the bill of rights in 1789. They did not
have the growing media coverage to influence average citizens, instead they relied on public
appearances and the occasional print to distribute. The constitution itself is not clear and does not
outline the rights speech related to money, however, it should not matter how individual citizens or
their entities choose to spend their

The Freedom Of Speech
As an incoming freshman at Dartmouth, I know little about the campus – from where the best late
night snacks are to what people tend to do on the weekends. But I do know why I chose Dartmouth.
It is strongly focused on both the arts and sciences, and above all, on community (where perhaps
green transcends even red and blue). Dartmouth alumni, faculty, and current students alike are
exuberant to share their experiences with the university. College is one of the most diverse
communities that an individual will be a part of. It's only natural that you'll become friends with
people completely different than yourself. Thus, I hope to find the following statement to be true: "at
Dartmouth, differences are embraced and ideas are challenged."
Yet, like many other college campuses across the nation, the freedom of expression is a matter of
debate at Dartmouth. The freedom of speech is a fundamental right and basis for any democracy. So,
why is it an issue of such controversy?
To begin with, it is no secret that today's current political landscape is polarized. One does not have
to look beyond the echo chambers of our Facebook feeds and our daily newsletters to see how
ideologies influence facts. America's political parties are growing stronger. This is dangerous largely
because "us" is becoming "us vs. them". We are not only divided in our political beliefs but in our
daily lives. According to a 2014 Pew Research study, marrying someone or living near someone of a

This summed up their sense of belonging, ensured by having their own territory and being with their
own race. The need for belonging stemmed from their perception and actual experiences not only in
school but the community as a whole. There was always the fight for one's own turf. This was
emphasized during this scene that showed the two Latinos who had to run from the group of
Cambodians who were chasing them and the attack on these Latinos that necessitated them to split
up. Unfortunately the woman made a wrong turn and bumped into another group which caused her
to be physically harmed. This scene highlighted that though they belonged to one community, they
did not quite see themselves as part of that community and sub–groups or tribes abounded because it
was in these smaller groups that they found security. They needed to form groups based on their race
and color. They stuck together and supported each other because they found comfort from one
another just like members of a family caring for each other. They became so distrusting of other
groups because of the past painful events that happened in their lives. Every race needed to establish
that they were not inferior over the others. But all of these initial behavior and attitude changed
because their English teacher paved the way for them to trust and support each other. As Eva said

The Political Power Of Social Media
From hieroglyphics to the printing press, the concept of communication has been an integral part of
society in order to express and spread ideas. However, through technological advancements and the
prevalence of social media, communication has become faster and easier than before, allowing for
greater involvement in activities globally. This has allowed for social media to become a method of
political action because of its accessibility and speed. With the advancing processes of social media
as a political force, there have been arguments on the effectiveness and different ways to take
advantage of it. Clay Shirky, in "The Political Power of Social Media: Technology, the Public
Sphere, and Political Change," has addressed the various ways in which countries, especially the
United States, has attempted to utilize social media to incite freedom of speech and build a broader
public sphere. He listed the instrumental approach, where anti–censorship and "western" websites
are encouraged, and the environmental, where local conversations among the residents of the
country are encouraged. Shirky argues that inciting local conversations within people is far more
effective in the long run in order to make true change and create a public sphere. However, there
have been criticism against the use of social media as a way of creating political activism, especially
from Malcom Gladwell in his article "Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted."
Gladwell argues that social

Frozen easily fills this requirement because who hasn't ever felt alone or different? Anyone who is

Freedom of Expression has become involved in a debate that rages on in the modern day. The First

Movement, which has been growing and gaining more influence over the years. Many feel that this
controversial movement, which puts an emphasis on removing or changing language and behavior
that could be considered offensive, stands in direct opposition to the First Amendment. Proponents
of the Political Correctness Movement argue that there is no conflict between Political Correctness

many different parts of society. From politics to academics, to media, to business, and even to casual

The American Dream
Introduction
The American dream is a term used in a lot of ways. However, it revolves around the thought that
anyone living in the US can achieve something coupled with the possibility of lead a happy and
successful life. The dream has been an aim for the majority of the individuals who reside in the land
of America that gives them hope of the future. The definition of the term has expanded to
incorporate freedom, achievement and meaningful relationships.
People who manage to achieve their respective are deemed to have achieved the American dream.
Part of the dream involves controlling one's own fate, becoming successful, and having good living
conditions. Example of this dream has included being in possession of things like television,
automobiles, supermarkets and having access to the Internet.
In this perspective, the American dream revolves around making better living conditions for
individuals and their children. It's about having the chance to achieve what elsewhere may have not
been possible. The outline of the dream is different for each person. According to Paul Krugman;
"America looks more and more like a class–ridden society. And guess what? Our political leaders
are doing everything they can to fortify class inequality, while denouncing anyone who complains–
or even points out what is happening–as a practitioner of class warfare." (Muller, 2011.p.465). The
America Dream is becoming a thing of the Past, the wealthy have more privileges than the poor.
From the birth of America, to America today, the driving force and the heart of America has always
been the "American Dream." The "American Dream" is a goal for the majority of people who live in
the realms of the Americanized world. I believe that the "American Dream" is controlling my own
destiny, becoming successful, and living free. Examples of this dream are things like television,
automobiles, supermarkets, malls, Internet, planes, trains, etc. The "American Dream" is success,
freedom, and being able to control your own destiny.
Becoming successful has been the dreams of many people of the past and present and I think that it
is one the most important things that a person must accomplish. Anyone and everyone can develop

The Fight For Freedom Of Speech In The United States
Freedom of Speech The United States was built on a foundation of freedom and independence.
British citizens wanted to freely practice their religion without government control, which led to the
United States' existence. Freedom of Speech, defined as "the legal right to express one's opinions
freely" (Merriam–Webster), is a crucial part of western society; without it, western society would be
significantly different. Freedom of Speech is important; however, its limitations have been heavily
debated since its existence, especially in the court of law. The fight for Freedom of Speech began
over two thousand years ago during the time of Socrates and other methodical thinkers. Back then,
free thinkers were not allowed to express their ideas if it went against the common religion of the
government. As history continued, progressively more scholars and free thinkers questioned the
religious governments. This led to the separation of the church and the state. When writing the US
constitution, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson, America's
founding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of these inconsistencies was that the constitution did not give approximate limitations to
Freedom of Speech. Because of this, many trials have taken place to decide what these limitations
are. For example, Cohen v. California, 403 U.S. 15 (1971), determined that offensive messages
could be worn or expressed if it displays a political message; however, this was heavily debated.
Debating continued, and more limitations were created. Thus, the idea of Political Correctness was
born. Political Correctness is "conforming to a belief that language and practices which could offend
political sensibilities (as in matters of sex or race) should be eliminated" (Merriam–Webster). This
brought a new perspective to Freedom of Speech because society now deemed what was appropriate
for citizens to

The Relation Between Economic Freedom And Political...
George Pippin Professor Hays HMXP 201 29 July 2015 An Ideal Society Throughout history, we
have seen many societies come and go regardless of how powerful or stable they were at one point.
Is it possible to have a society which is ideal for all of it's members, or is society only capable of
being beneficial to some and not to everyone? I do believe an ideal society could be achieved, but
our current society would have to undertake a substantial overhaul. In today's society, there are more
opinions and beliefs about the way it should be ran than there have ever been. An ideal society could

In Milton Friedman's story, The Relation Between Economic Freedom and Political Freedom, he
speaks about what a free society should consist of, "One feature of a free society is surely the
freedom of individuals to advocate and propagandize openly for a radical change in the structure of
the society–––so long as the advocacy is restricted to persuasion and does not include force or other
forms of coercion." (Friedman 63). The American democracy system revolutionized politics into
what we know it to be today. A government of the people, by the people, for the people, was never
made imaginable before America; but like all good things, overtime it can become corrupted. An
ideal society would truly be what the people wanted. Democracy is by far the best political system
that could be implemented, but there could be improvements. I do not believe being a politician
should be a career choice, but it should be more of a duty to your country. We place trust in our
governments to decide such things as going to war, healthcare, and overall the decisions that affect
our lives. In order to make a proper decision on sending troops to war, I believe the decision makers
should have had military experience. It is impossible to ask someone to go risk their lives when you
have no idea the feeling or sacrifice they could possibly make. All members of the legislative
branch, and the President, should be required to have served their country. Moreover, in an ideal
society it's politicians would be held accountable for their actions. For example, during a review at
your workplace, if your employer tells you that your satisfaction or approval rating is less than fifty
percent by your peers, what do you think would happen to you? More than likely you would be
fired, but why doesn't this same philosophy apply to the men and women who run a society? In
order to keep politicians working for the

Political Freedom And Economic Growth Essay
Briefly detail your expectations about the relationship between political freedom and economic
growth, as measured by real GDP per capita.– My expectations about this relationship are that as the
political freedom rises so will economic growth which is expressed in terms of GDP per capita.
since the independent variable political freedom is measured in units with 1 being the best, the
correlation and the regression will be negative as the independent variable increase (political
freedom decreases) which mean that GDP per capita will fall as well. I believe countries where there
is a lack of political freedom and stability are likely to have a low economic growth compared to
those who are more politically stable. This is due to the revolving government in which policies are
created short term as there time in power is unknown. Explain how regression can be used to
analyse the relationship between political freedom and real GDP per capita? –Regression is be used
to show whether there is a positive or negative relationship between political freedom and GDP per
capita. The coefficient of b determines the slope of the line and how an increase in X affects Y. The
regression also determines the R squared which shows how closely the X and Y variable are
correlated within the regression. The confidence levels indicate how confident political freedom has
an impact on GDP at a particular confidence level. The P value explains whether to accept the null
hypothesis or to reject it.

Society's Failure To Achieve The American Dream
The image of an American Dream is that anything can happen. The idea that anyone can be
successful or pursue success. Satisfaction and happiness can be only be attained through the quality
of their own life. Americans were raised in a society that tells them they can be anything they want
as an adult. In a disproportionate American society, success is largely based off of power and
financial stability. The dream, the illusion, is something that hopes to ease the pain of the dry reality
that money has taken over one's happiness. The need to be financially stable has caused society to

Do to the influence of money, society has chosen to sacrifice happiness in hopes of the ability to

Dutton's 2004 say: This publication argues for a fresh approach that moves beyond the limitations of
the 'information society' concept that has been the most common way of signifying the broad,
interconnected range of social and economic changes tied to ICTs.
Rethinking access in the way proposed here opens a broader understanding of the term access' in
relation to ICTs than the traditional definition that referred primarily to physical access to ICT

Order vs. Freedom in Political Systems
Order vs. Freedom in Political Systems Order and freedom are both necessary and beneficial
towards the citizens and society with the aim to promote harmony, yet they both contradict each
other. This contradiction has existed throughout many years and it is still hard to decide which one is
ideal for the society. This essay will discuss and analyze if order or freedom is more important for
political systems. Many believe that order should be applied by the government; though it should be
allowed to a certain limit and should not interfere in a citizen's personal life. However others believe
that full freedom should be given to individuals and that nothing should be enforced as it brings
along many differences between citizens. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, it is also been questioned that how can educated men criticize and undervalue those
who have been a victim of poverty or harsh upbringing which has affected their education when it is
truly not their fault. Furthermore critics have argued on how it can be determined that kings and
philosophers are not ruling in their self interest and in which way their power should be tested.
Furthermore, another aspect which has been greatly supported and criticized by many great
philosophers is freedom. Freedom is where there is no power or control over the citizen's decisions.
Every citizen is entitled to free speech and their right to interfere in political decision making.
Additionally, the Athenian democracy ideology supports the freedom theory. The main aim of this
democratic thinking was to give the power to the majority rather than the minority as this would
take away the inequalities and corruption within society. Therefore the Athenian democracy was
ruled by people hence it believes in self governing in which the dedication of citizens in
participating and contributing in political decision making is extremely fundamental. The Athenian
democracy also has strong views in promoting equality, it believes that every citizen should be
treated with equality before the law and should be entitled to vote freely. However, there are many
advantages and disadvantages regarding this ideology. The main advantages of this democratic

Restrictions on Free Speech in Malaysia
Protecting Free Speech, by using Restrictions?
It is undeniable that the citizens of Malaysia have been granted the freedom of speech, assembly and
association, as stated in the Act 10 of the Federal Constitution. Quoted from the Federal
Constitution, every citizen has the right to free expression and speech. However, freedom of speech
is an issue which has been discussed and argued for a long time, not only in Malaysia but all around
the world. It is discussed that how "free" a speech can be. Does freedom of speech mean that we can
simply talk something bad about the ruler without any evidence? Liberty (2014) defines that the
freedom of speech includes the right of every citizen in communicating and expressing in any
medium, holding opinions, receiving information & ideas and participating in demonstration and
protest without the interference of the country or government.
Although by judging solely from the definition, political expression which covers the matters of
public interest seems acceptable, it is undeniable that under the Act 10 of the Federal Constitution,
clause 2 has stated that the parliament can impose law to restrict the freedom of speech. Such
restrictions are said to protect the security of Malaysia, privileges of Parliament and the public order.
Besides, Art 10 (4) also stated that the law can restrict the questioning of any matter, status,
privilege and sovereignty. InterNations (2014) has also explained that there are also limitations of

Summary Of Doug Mcadams Freedom Summer
Freedom Summer by Doug McAdams, is a riveting book that captures the story of the 1964
Freedom Summer. In which over a thousand volunteers went to Mississippi, to register blacks to
vote, and to staff freedom schools, something that view people realize was also a part of freedom
summer. In his book, McAdams discusses, the events that occurred during Freedom Summer, from
murder to harassment. He discusses the reasons why young white, affluent, northerners, who it
would seem would not care about the plight of African Americans, decided to take part in Freedom
Summer. McAdams chronicles the events of Freedom Summer using interviews and surveys from
people who took part in Freedom Summer, or people who applied for freedom summer but did not

In class we have discussed the reasons why people form groups, and who tends to be a part of a
group. People form groups so that, specifically interest groups. Our definition of an interest group id
it has to be an organized group, seek to influence public policy, and they don't seek public office.
Freedom Summer does not meet this definition alone, because it was a campaign, and not an
organization, however SNCC (Student Non–Violent Coordinating Committee) does. SNCC was an
organized group. People had to apply to be a part of this group, there was leadership and they had a

Political Correctness Vs Freedom Of Speech
Political Correctness vs Freedom of Speech Political correctness is the idea that certain words,
policies, or opinions are too offensive and taboo that they should be censored. While this definition
may seem unfair, that is exactly what it is. This idea of being politically correct is on the rise in
America, with various factions and sides taking advantage of it. Most notedly, it has taken effect in
such areas such as the media, academia, and industry. In these areas, employees, students, or any
subject in question may be put to the test of whether or not their views are in line with politically
correct guidelines. In many of these incidents, the subject in question may be reprimanded,
ostracized, or otherwise punished for their crimes of thought or expression. This is a hotly debated
topic in America, with both sides of the debate passionately disputing the worth of such a thing. Due
to its widespread influence, it is debated in nearly every aspect of American life. Some feel that is
necessary, as it protects minorities, women, or any group that may be discriminated against from
offense and or "hateful speech". Others feel that it is a clear assault on freedom of speech and
disproportionately punishes those for trivial comments or opinions where no true offense should be
taken. In this essay, the clear and present danger that political correctness poses to our First

In the simulation, I played a recently–graduated attorney working a dream job at the American Civil

that there was not any freedom of speech violation, due to private company laws and legal power to

Generally, democracy requires individuals of a society to express themselves, express a
culture/religion, express debate and activism, everything that allows the people to be people. The
right to political speech, activism, along with journalism need the law of freedom of speech to
prosper in a democracy.
Considering recent news and previous court cases, the arrests of journalists at Standing Rock and the
court cases Near v. Minnesota (1931) and New York Times Co. vs. United States (1971), display one
of many reasons why the first amendment's freedom of speech is prominent to democracy. Denying
the law of freedom of speech destroys a democratic society. Political speech, activism, and
journalism all aid in expressing political engagement. Democracy must have a politically engaged
society to function well. With journalism, their freedom of speech allows the society to progress as a
democracy by allowing them more awareness about their society or more broadly, their country.
Without awareness, a democratic country has oblivious people that will later not express political
engagement. In the article, "Arrests of Journalists at Standing

Racism And Its Subsequent Civil Liberty
The esteemed author Mark Twain offered commentary on a hypothetical society which had
unwittingly brought upon its own demise, when he said, "But it was impossible to save the Great
Republic. She was rotten to the heart. Lust of conquest had long ago done its work; trampling upon
the helpless abroad had taught her, by a natural process, to endure with apathy the like at home;
multitudes who had applauded the crushing of other people 's liberties, lived to suffer for their
mistake in their own persons". A common theme of the animated television show Futurama is the
concept of multiculturalism and its subsequent civil liberty. Futurama is set in the year 3000 and
follows the adventures of a pizza delivery boy who wakes up in the time period after being
accidentally cryogenically frozen in the year 2000. In the world today, relationships between
countries and people are becoming increasingly interconnected and this brings rise to new
challenges, as a result of this, the concept of civil liberty is important. While the world in the time of
Futurama is generally seen as more socially advanced, it still faces some of the same issues and
mistakes that modern society deals with such as social prejudice, national pride, and foreign
intervention. An apathetic attitude when faced with certain issues can bring unfavorable
consequences. Social prejudice is an innate defect in human society and is a form of control that

Importance Of Political Freedom
Political Freedom and How it is Preserved Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, three
unalienable rights said to have been bestowed upon human beings at their creation and written into
the Declaration of Independence as the cornerstones of what the United States government is to
protect. These are three essential factors for a government to uphold, however of the three liberty is
positioned higher than the other two unalienable rights; liberty being defined by the oxford
dictionary as, "the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by
authority on one's way of life, behavior, or political views" ("Liberty"). Colonial Americans would
take up arms against the British Empire to defend their right to liberty, casting off their ties with the
monarchy and establishing their own independent nation. This liberty fought so desperately for

U.S. independence, great lengths were made to ensure that the liberty of political freedom would be

The Importance Of Freedom Of Speech
Is it possible to imagine a civil democratic society without freedom of speech? The right of speech is
one of the most valuable integrity a human being can have in this world. Precisely, this is an
opportunity given by the right to talk open minded and give opinions about particular situations.
However, what are the impacts on a total society of assuring the right of free speech?
As far as I am concerned, free speech provides a check on corrupt, inefficient leadership and
administrative personnel. Moreover, it is indirectly responsible for the higher standards of living to
the extent that free speech promotes scientific discovery and dissemination, more effective means
toward given societal goals, and more efficient governmental personnel. Some critics of free speech
may argue that it leads to political instability and revolution as well. Freedom of speech exists
mostly in democratic countries. In these particular countries politicians come into force through
disputes and discussions. However, freedom is an important section of democratic society and in
this case, it is considered as an affirmative right. If we take into account not only political life, we
have to agree with the point that freedom of speech and thoughts is crucial for growth. Again, new
ideas are born through arguments and discussions and this is the key to prosperity. Diversity of
viewpoints and opinions create conditions that are ideal for evolution, progress and development.
Indeed, there are other rights of freedom a human being can possess. Such as, freedom of press,
worship, and religion etc. The fundamental right of the freedom of press implicit in the right the
freedom of speech and expressions, is crucial for the political prosperity and proper functioning of
democracy. Freedom of press is the center of social and political bonds. It is the principal duty of the
courts to support the freedom of press and invalidate all laws or administrative actions, which
intervene with it contrary to the constitutional mandate. Though, government do not hold monopoly
for social media. A citizen has radical right to use the best means of transferring and obtaining
information and have access telecasting for the purpose. Commercial advertisements

Why Freedom And Equality Is An Artificial Creation Created...
The aim of this essay is to explore whether freedom and equality is founded on natural moral
principle or whether it is to an extent an artificial creation created by the political institution. To an
extent, I do agree that freedom and equality are based on natural moral principles because during the
state of nature human beings are able to enjoy freedom and equality as these seem are the rights that
humans are borned along with. Therefore, it is sufficient to say that they exist in respect of the
nature and with the intention from the God. This idea is further supported by many different
philosophers such as John Locke and Thomas Aquinas. However, to a certain extent, I believe that
political intitution such as law is an artificial tool to help restore freedom and equality in a society so
that people can still enjoy these rights. Through the theory of social contract, it clearly shows that
law plays an important role in enforcing the instead of the artificial creator of these rights.
To find out whether freedom and equality are rest on natural moral principles, one has to ask is what
the principle means. One of the basic moral principles is to follow what the nature intends and that
is known as the natural law, by making decisions in respects of the nature of things . In terms of
Natural law, it is to follow what is natural for human beings and the rest of creation. Therefore, I
will examine the freedom and equality during the state of nature in order to prove that they

Rhetorical Analysis Of Frederick Douglass 's ' The Great...
Born a slave in Maryland but managed to escape in 1838 was one of the most influential African
American leader, Frederick Douglass. A person who battled assiduously for the abolishment of
slavery. His speech "The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro" is only one of his many great
efforts to putting an end to slavery. The true subject matter of his speech is American slavery
however in particular it addressed the hypocrisy of American slavery. Douglass's main argument in
regards to his speech is followed by this rhetorical question "Are the great principles of political
freedom and of natural justice, embodied in that Declaration of Independence, extended to us?"
which sets up for the thesis "This Fourth of July is yours, not mine." Meaning that celebrating the
fourth of July is all about independence and freedom but it is ironic how America reinforces this
however following a system of trading slaves– snatching away the black people's freedom instead.
Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in the year of 1818, but he successfully managed to
escape becoming a leader of the abolitionist movement. Not only was he an abolitionist but also an
orator, writer, and statesman. Douglass was a strong and passionate believer of equality amongst all
people as he had famously said, "I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do
wrong." He was also the very first black citizen to hold a high government ranking in the U.S.

To what extent did restrictive political policies inhibit religious freedom in Fidel Castro's Cuba?
From 1959 to1991 political policies in Cuba under Fidel Castro had prohibited religious freedom.

Political Freedoms: Social Problems In The United States
There are many social issues facing our society and people today, the biggest of which is political

freedom of speech. The United States is a very progressive state in where they allowed to believe,
say, and do whatever you want, but within the laws set up by white Christian men who knew
nothing about the future and what it held for the people who live now. Now in this day and age we
face much more difficult problems than plagues and the starting of a new nation, we have to soldier
through the pain and strife of a difference of opinion. This problem is caused by the people having
an option of what goes on in their life. The people have made the wrong decisions with their life,

thrown out because at the end of the day that is what causes most of the debating and fighting
throughout our people. But then we would have to throw out their beliefs! Do not worry your pretty

Author History – Support of Religious and Political Freedoms in Sonnet XV John Milton, born
December 9, 1608, is considered one of England's greatest poets. But Milton was not only a poet, he
was also a political figure. Milton supported the British Civil War and the Puritan government of
Oliver Cromwell. Knowing this background, it is no surprise that many of Milton's writings contain
his strong religious and political beliefs. Sonnet XV, a plea to Lord Fairfax to help the new
Commonwealth government be successful, displays Milton's concern with holy and virtuous ideals,
his disdain for the rule of the English monarchy, and his pro–Puritan republican political beliefs.

In Sonnet XV Milton also shows his dislike for the king. He refers to the king as a "serpent" (line 8)
and the king's followers as "hydra heads" (line 7) or monsters. In the sonnet, he also refers to the
king's government as full of "Avarice and Rapine" (line 14), greed, looting, plunder, and corruption.
He further showed his disdain for the monarchy, when he wrote Eikonoklastes ("image breaker"),
which was the Puritan government's official response supporting the former King's execution
(Danielson 15). Milton did not just hate the monarchy, he supported a republican government.
Milton supported the Puritan ideals of religious freedom and establishment of a "more democratic
system of government" where all adult males had the right to vote (Norbrook 109). In 1649, Milton
was asked to work to support the new Puritan government (Danielson 14). He worked for 11 years
as a secretary in the Commonwealth government. He wrote articles and pamphlets that "defended
the new government and attacked its adversaries" (Danielson 15). Sonnet XV shows these ideas as
Milton pleads with Lord Fairfax to help rid the "Avarice and Rapine" (Line 14) of the Royalist
government. Additionally, Milton saw "Public Fraud" (line 13) as "shameful" and as such, the
"Public Faith" (line 12), which Milton equated with "National Honor" (Honigmann 142), had to be
removed from that fraud for the new government to succeed. The examples above show

Why is the concept of freedom so contested in political theory? (Word maximum: 1,500) Freedom is

suggested by the question, the concept is one which is hotly debated. Indeed, political agents attempt
to control the political agenda through promotion of their particular definition. This essay will look
at the ways freedom has been defined by different theorists over the years. It will also look at how
freedom is linked with and explained through different theo–ries and ideologies. It will then go on to

This approach may be considered stifling of both innovation and effort, since anything above the
average will not be rewarded. By contrast, if equality of opportunity is achieved, then some will
accumulate more wealth and power than others, giving them effectively more freedom. John Rawls
(1971, cited in Middleton, 2005) introduced two principles of justice, the first of which was that
'each person is to have an equal right to the most extensive liberty compatible with a similar liberty
for others'. Rawls attempted to address the question of inequality through the second of his
principles: the 'difference principle'. In this he said that it was acceptable for some to be better off
than others as long as by doing so the poorest people also benefitted in some way. In other words,
inequality was acceptable if some of the extra benefit were redistributed to those most in need. This
approach is an example of positive freedom. However, Isaiah Berlin (1969, cited in Smith, 2005),
known as a chief architect of theories of positive and negative freedom, saw dangers in this
approach too. He argued that it was wrong to ascribe to individuals a set of common needs and
desires. Moreover, he considered that the surrender of individual freedom for collective self–rule
could result in individual rights being violated. He concluded that a measure of both

The Berlin Wall: The Fight For Political Freedom
Seen repeatedly throughout history, it is evident that the fight for political freedom is often
suppressed when individuals repress their thoughts and refuse to speak out against oppressors. A
common occurrence throughout major events in history, it has become obvious that doing the right
thing in society can only be done successfully when individuals act upon their moral impulses.
However, the initiation of acting upon such inclinations is often overlooked and repressed due to the
pasts of individuals. Psychologically affecting how individuals act and respond to societal issues,
the repression of thoughts and ideas against acting out and taking a stand in society because of such
pasts has become indisputably obvious over time. Unmistakably ... Show more content on

This is evident throughout history, as seen in the works of many global and influential leaders.
Ronald Reagan exemplifies this idea in his speech at the Berlin Wall on June 12, 1987. "As long as
the gate is closed, as long as this scar of a wall is permitted to stand," Reagan explained, "it is not
the German question alone that remains open, but the question of freedom of all mankind"
(Eidenmuller 2). His speech exemplified a point that all global leaders were trying to make at the
time: the barricade nature of the Berlin Wall "[could not] withstand truth" (Eidenmuller 6), and
"stood to restrain... freedom" (Jens 1). At this point in history, most of the world was too afraid to
speak out against the Communist leaders stationed in West Berlin. By bypassing any unspoken rules
present at the time, Reagan faced the most feared Communists of the world and spoke against their
practices. Reagan explained,"in the Communist world, we see failure, technological backwardness,
declining standards of health," and continued to explain how "freedom leads to prosperity... freedom
is the victor" (Eidenmuller 3). If he were to have not begged Mikhail Gorbachev to "tear down this
wall" (Eidenmuller 3), it is no question that the freedom of those living under Communist rule
would have been compromised. Henry Thoreau also presses this point in his works. He questioned if
there could "be a government in which majorities do not virtually decide right and wrong, but
conscience" (Saxby 2). Emphasizing how people need to decide for themselves what the difference
between right and wrong truly is, Thoreau pressed the idea that one must not repress their thoughts
in speaking out, as "a minority is powerless when it conforms to the majority... it is irresistible when
it clogs by its whole weight" (Saxby 8). When one casts their vote, they should not be "willing to
leave it to the majority" because

Hate Speech And Freedom Of Speech Analysis
Where the right to freedom of expression extends to mediums including written or oral
communications as well as the media, this right is not absolute. This article assists in assessing the
several burdens placed on the media 2013–2014 and its impact on Australia's status as a democracy
placing high value on press autonomy. The article also discusses the restrictions effected by the
recent decisions and actions of Australian politicians, judges and government agencies that affect
media freedom. These include the issuing of the jailing of journalists, increased national security
and surveillance power, coercion of journalists and politicians by public servants and the censorship
of public informa¬tion. This assists in expressing the limitations of freedom of expression and the
abuse of the power to enforce or invoke freedom of expression within Australia.

Social Equality And Political Freedom

  • 1. Social Equality And Political Freedom A) It is unsurprising that social equality and political freedom are positively correlated with environmental protection and sustainability. This is observed as as environmental problems bear down disproportionately upon the poor, who do not share the same equalities and freedoms as others (Agyeman et al., p. 1). This relationship exists due to increased political power enjoyed by the wealthy and required corporate profit maximization for shareholders. Political power and voracious desire for profits is a dangerous combination. Put together, these two components form a positive feedback loop because the wealthier someone becomes, the most political power he/she gains. This relationship results in facilitated cost externalization on lower ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Agyeman et al., p. 6). This report serves as further evidence of the environmental injustices faced by minorities who do not have the power to face the corporations who own the hazardous waste facilities. It is laughable to think of what would occur if such a facility was proposed in Beverly Hills or Montecito because the citizens would be up in arms with many lawyers and politicians. Because predominantly ethnic and poor communities do not have such resources, they are unfairly subject to pollution which results from profit maximization. In conclusion, corporations extracting additional revenues damages the health of poor neighborhoods who do not have the capacity to resist the pollution in their homes. Of the various definitions for "sustainability" and "sustainable development" put forth by Agyeman, Bullard, and Evans, the most compelling and useful defines one sustainability as "the need to ensure a better quality of life for all, now, and into the future, in a just and equitable manner, while living within the limits of supporting ecosystems (Agyeman et al., p. 2). This definition is particularly suitable to sustainability because it captures its social justice component rather than portraying it as a solely environmental issue. Another key part is the mentioning of intra–generational equity which is crucial because many people fighting for sustainability will not be able to see the fruits of their labor but must still ... • 3. The First Amendment Of Students To Free Speech Zones The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution authorized citizens with the freedom of religion, speech, press and assembly. This amendment also goes to the college students. However, colleges limited the students constitutional rights by enforcing the "free speech zones". Colleges are places where it enable students to encounter new and challenging ideas through open debates, but free speech zones limited this. You can only express your ideas in the free speech zones, nowhere else. This can be related to burning the flag (an action that intended to make a political point against a country or its policies), if you can't express your ideas anywhere you wants, doesn't it also indicates a person can't randomly choose a place to burn the flag, it have to be in a specific area. Both theses is a way to express your rights as a citizens of U.S. Therefore, colleges shouldn't restrict the political speech of students to free speech zones. For instance, students went to colleges to learn more about the world around them and to encounter people from different backgrounds. Students would be able to expands their knowledge and form their own opinions about the government and its policies, but it won't happen if colleges restrict it to free speech zones. According to the text, American Flag Stands for Tolerance, it states; " Each individual is to have the freedom to develop by his or her own lights, and not by the command of officialdom. That requires not just the right to be let ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Freedom Of Political Communication Introduction: The following piece is to analyse the implied freedom of political communication, and in doing this an understanding of both the principle and why the courts are so hesitant to apply the principle will be developed. In its essence the implied freedom to political communication is the freedom given to the public for freedom of speech of a political nature. Evidence of where this freedom was not given could be seen during the chairman Mao rule in china, where the Chinese believed that the chairman was essentially God and speaking bad of him would result in biblical destruction of life, and as so currently in north Korea under the Kim Jung Un rule. There are a number of cases that have developed the constitutionally implied ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The source of the freedom: It is extremely important to understand the High Courts positioning on the sources of the freedom because it is essentially the precursor to the courts positioning on the nature, scope, content and application of the freedom. For a number or reasons the ACTV and the Nationwide case are considered together when looking into the implied freedom of political communication, one reason being that they were both decided on the same day, but more so because they both identify the thought pattern behind the freedom. The ACTV case came about when a number of broadcasting corporations, as well as the NSW government challenged a commonwealth legislative amendment, pt IIIID of the Broadcasting and television Act 1942 (CTH), after a commonwealth parliamentary inquiry that found that the high cost and low quality of advertising was harmful to the Australian political process. the nationwide news case resulted in similar processes however the cases could not have been more juxtaposed. provisions under the industrial relations Act 1988 (CTH) made it an offence to bring the industrial relations commission or one of it members into notoriety. The provisions were challenged in the case after one of the newspapers columnist accused the commissioner ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Internet Freedom And Political Oppression An immensely prominent aspect of today's society is technology, which has provided the world with the internet. Though the internet has provided many positive benefits, it has also brought along many negative aspects. In Evgeny Morozov's article, "Technology's Role in Revolution. Internet Freedom and Political Oppression" the authors argument revolves around cyber–utopianism and realism in regard to the internets actual function. Morozov's article attempts to convince the reader the internet is a rather negative tool due to how the function of the internet has been more beneficial to governments by allowing the spread of propaganda and legitimacy, and its aid in authoritarianism. Morozov mainly focuses on how many people often seem to forget how the internet carries negative aspects, resulting in cyber utopianism, "a naïve belief in the emancipatory nature of online communication that rests on a stubborn refusal to acknowledge its downsides." Morozov argues that cyber utopianism is not a realistic way of viewing the internet due to how the internet operates throughout different countries and because of the effect the internet has had on authoritarianism. Instead of the internet being a tool for the oppressed, Morozov suggests that it has become a bigger aid to governments. Though I do think that the internet is an important aid in helping with world issues, I do agree that there are more negative consequences. This is evident considering some countries barely have access ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. What Is Political Correctness Or A Violation Of Your... Betancur, Pg,1 Political correctness or a violation of your freedom of speech? In George Orwell's book, nineteen eighty–four, Orwell writes of a fictional totalitarian government in which all residents must speak a language called "newspeak". Newspeak is a language created by the government in order to limit free will, self expression and freedom of thought. Unlike the citizens in Orwell's book, Americans have the right to express their opinions however they'd like without being ostracised by the majority, or do they? Over the last couple decades the term "politically correct" has garnered major attention and been used to describe a type of speech in which vocabulary, policies and actions that are intended to avoid offense to members ... • 11. Political Freedom: Arendt and de Tocqueville Essay Political Freedom: Arendt and de Tocqueville Freedom in America emanates from the state of political freedom held by the citizens. Both Hannah Arendt and Alexis de Tocqueville provide criticism of the apparent shape freedom maintains in America as well as insight regarding how they perceive true political freedom. By using the observations and criticisms of de Tocqueville and the vision of Arendt, the position of modern America and its relation to the ideals of political freedom can be understood. It is necessary to understand de Tocqueville's observation of equality in order to make the distinction of democracy and how freedom relates to it. According to de Tocqueville, democracy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The collapse of public responsibilities is rooted in the growth of private desires. Alexis de Tocqueville takes democracy down a miserable path where citizens become divided and governments become despotic and centralized. The morals of society collapse, connections dissolve between citizens, and "freedom produces private animosities, but despotism gives birth to general indifference" (de Tocqueville 195). Democracy in America does not end in despotic centralization; it concludes with the realization of the need for political freedom and the insinuation of power into the citizens through associations. "In order to combat the evils which equality may produce, there is only one effectual remedy, ––namely, political freedom (de Tocqueville 197). Political salvation in America does not seep from the national government, nor does it fester within the states themselves. De Tocqueville recognizes associations, which are the political forces beyond the sphere of institutional government, as the necessary means of preserving political power of the majority and political freedom in democracy. If men living in democratic countries had no right and no inclination to associate for political purposes, there independence would be in great jeopardy; but they might long preserve their wealth and their cultivation; whereas, if they never acquired the habit of forming ... • 13. Freedom Of Speech In Political Cartoons The editorial, "weaponized words" written by Kate Manne and Jason Stanley is a cry for help in the world of politics, which argues that the freedom of speech laws allow for the voices of dominant social groups to overpower those that are inferior. This opinion is also shown in the third political cartoon provided, that shows two different social groups under the same "freedom of speech" umbrella, who have to deal with each other constantly trying to oppress the other. These laws make it hard for any advancement of the lower–class societies. The belief that the freedom of speech laws, or the first amendment, need to be more concrete can be seen in the first political cartoon. This cartoon shows, again, two rival social groups, both are equals, however one of the social groups is using their freedom of speech in a improper way, and they are not being punished or prohibited in any way. This shows the oppression of a certain social group that is not being stopped. Much like in the editorial, which states that Yale students are being pressured into not wearing certain halloween costumes because they "offend others", the cartoon shows the use of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The author(s) stated that to truly have freedom of speech, one must be able to "question, contradict, and even lampoon the assertions of others" meaning you should be able to disagree with another person's claims, publicly if needed or wanted. This is shown in the second cartoon, where the NRA member is telling people, in a rude and unnecessary manner, that he disagrees with what they are doing. At the top of the cartoon, it states "if only we had an 'NRA' to defend the first amendment" which shows the belief that the first amendment is not getting enough support and protection, yet smaller programs like the NRA are standing up for less important things than the freedom of speech, like newspaper ... • 15. Freedom of Speech: Should We Be Spending Money to Transmit... The debate on the constitutionality of spending money to transmit a message has been discussed for some time now. Freedom of speech in the first amendment covers the right to express ideas without unjustifiable government control. Should the government decide that spending money to send out a message is unconstitutional or should they step back and remember that restrictions should not be imposed regardless of the citizen or entity? Since freedom of speech should not be restricted for anyone, money used to transmit a belief or an idea should not be restricted either. In order for speech to be heard in almost any facet, money will have to be spent. Political speech requires money in order for it to be heard and if someone decides to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main concern regarding money being used for political purposes or contributions expenses is that the money will be used to boost approval ratings through media outlets. Monies used for airtime that is contributed by the millions by corporations to help campaign for their choice in officials should be considered their choice and their freedom of expression or speech. Many citizens only have television or internet as their main form of education regarding elections, therefore this may seem threatening to campaigns that may not have the wealthy corporations backing their progress. The problem that we are facing as a nation is not whether someone or something gives money to a political venture; it is simply education of the citizens that are voting. Any amount of manipulation by money or campaigns should not matter if a person is educated properly on who they are voting for and why. Does the freedom of speech amendment protect the right to spend money to transmit a message? It is difficult to determine the ideas of the framers that created the bill of rights in 1789. They did not have the growing media coverage to influence average citizens, instead they relied on public appearances and the occasional print to distribute. The constitution itself is not clear and does not outline the rights speech related to money, however, it should not matter how individual citizens or their entities choose to spend their ... • 17. The Freedom Of Speech As an incoming freshman at Dartmouth, I know little about the campus – from where the best late night snacks are to what people tend to do on the weekends. But I do know why I chose Dartmouth. It is strongly focused on both the arts and sciences, and above all, on community (where perhaps green transcends even red and blue). Dartmouth alumni, faculty, and current students alike are exuberant to share their experiences with the university. College is one of the most diverse communities that an individual will be a part of. It's only natural that you'll become friends with people completely different than yourself. Thus, I hope to find the following statement to be true: "at Dartmouth, differences are embraced and ideas are challenged." Yet, like many other college campuses across the nation, the freedom of expression is a matter of debate at Dartmouth. The freedom of speech is a fundamental right and basis for any democracy. So, why is it an issue of such controversy? To begin with, it is no secret that today's current political landscape is polarized. One does not have to look beyond the echo chambers of our Facebook feeds and our daily newsletters to see how ideologies influence facts. America's political parties are growing stronger. This is dangerous largely because "us" is becoming "us vs. them". We are not only divided in our political beliefs but in our daily lives. In The North the free northern blacks had some political, economic, and social freedoms. By the 1830's Free northern blacks had a few political freedoms. . This is because the states population voted for this reasons for blacks to vote and also male jury duty. The only state that voted for black males to vote and do male jury duty was Massachusetts. Historical, Social and Political Issues in the movie FREEDOM WRITERS The thorough presentation of a well researched context in the film provided the environment for priming the viewers on the concept of belonging which was highlighted in the film. This grounded the film and prepared the viewers on the film's main focus. Through the brief but meaningful snippets of what happened during the trial of Rodney King, the viewers were introduced to the conflict used in the film that surfaced and distinctly placed attention on the concept of belonging. In the film, the Freedom Writers were made following the Rodney King trial in 1992 and the OJ Simpson murder case in 1994. These trials brought out the sensitive issues about injustices ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This summed up their sense of belonging, ensured by having their own territory and being with their own race. The need for belonging stemmed from their perception and actual experiences not only in school but the community as a whole. There was always the fight for one's own turf. This was emphasized during this scene that showed the two Latinos who had to run from the group of Cambodians who were chasing them and the attack on these Latinos that necessitated them to split up. Unfortunately the woman made a wrong turn and bumped into another group which caused her to be physically harmed. This scene highlighted that though they belonged to one community, they did not quite see themselves as part of that community and sub–groups or tribes abounded because it was in these smaller groups that they found security. They needed to form groups based on their race and color. They stuck together and supported each other because they found comfort from one another just like members of a family caring for each other. They became so distrusting of other groups because of the past painful events that happened in their lives. Every race needed to establish that they were not inferior over the others. But all of these initial behavior and attitude changed because their English teacher paved the way for them to trust and support each other. As Eva said "It's a sign of respect... for you", ... • 23. The Political Power Of Social Media From hieroglyphics to the printing press, the concept of communication has been an integral part of society in order to express and spread ideas. However, through technological advancements and the prevalence of social media, communication has become faster and easier than before, allowing for greater involvement in activities globally. This has allowed for social media to become a method of political action because of its accessibility and speed. With the advancing processes of social media as a political force, there have been arguments on the effectiveness and different ways to take advantage of it. Clay Shirky, in "The Political Power of Social Media: Technology, the Public Sphere, and Political Change," has addressed the various ways in which countries, especially the United States, has attempted to utilize social media to incite freedom of speech and build a broader public sphere. He listed the instrumental approach, where anti–censorship and "western" websites are encouraged, and the environmental, where local conversations among the residents of the country are encouraged. Shirky argues that inciting local conversations within people is far more effective in the long run in order to make true change and create a public sphere. However, there have been criticism against the use of social media as a way of creating political activism, especially from Malcom Gladwell in his article "Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted." Finding the Middle Ground: Freedom of Expression versus Political Correctness "Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or of the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances," ("The Bill of Rights: A Transcription). Arguably one of the most important amendments, the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States is generally summarized as protecting the rights of each citizen to Freedom of Expression. While it may be one of the core values of American society, one's right to Freedom of Expression has become involved in a debate that rages on in the modern day. The First Amendment has become one of the main supports for the argument against the Political Correctness Movement, which has been growing and gaining more influence over the years. Many feel that this controversial movement, which puts an emphasis on removing or changing language and behavior that could be considered offensive, stands in direct opposition to the First Amendment. Proponents of the Political Correctness Movement argue that there is no conflict between Political Correctness and Freedom of Expression. However, it revolves around the thought that anyone living in the US can achieve something coupled with the possibility of lead a happy and successful life. The dream has been an aim for the majority of the individuals who reside in the land of America that gives them hope of the future. The definition of the term has expanded to incorporate freedom, achievement and meaningful relationships. People who manage to achieve their respective are deemed to have achieved the American dream. It's about having the chance to achieve what elsewhere may have not been possible. The outline of the dream is different for each person. According to Paul Krugman; "America looks more and more like a class–ridden society. And guess what? Our political leaders are doing everything they can to fortify class inequality, while denouncing anyone who complains– or even points out what is happening–as a practitioner of class warfare." (Muller, 2011.p.465). The America Dream is becoming a thing of the Past, the wealthy have more privileges than the poor. From the birth of America, to America today, the driving force and the heart of America has always been the "American Dream." The "American Dream" is a goal for the majority of people who live in the realms of the Americanized world. • 31. The Fight For Freedom Of Speech In The United States Freedom of Speech The United States was built on a foundation of freedom and independence. British citizens wanted to freely practice their religion without government control, which led to the United States' existence. Freedom of Speech, defined as "the legal right to express one's opinions freely" (Merriam–Webster), is a crucial part of western society; without it, western society would be significantly different. Freedom of Speech is important; however, its limitations have been heavily debated since its existence, especially in the court of law. The fight for Freedom of Speech began over two thousand years ago during the time of Socrates and other methodical thinkers. Back then, free thinkers were not allowed to express their ideas if it went against the common religion of the government. As history continued, progressively more scholars and free thinkers questioned the religious governments. This led to the separation of the church and the state. When writing the US constitution, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson, America's founding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of these inconsistencies was that the constitution did not give approximate limitations to Freedom of Speech. Because of this, many trials have taken place to decide what these limitations are. Debating continued, and more limitations were created. Thus, the idea of Political Correctness was born. Political Correctness is "conforming to a belief that language and practices which could offend political sensibilities (as in matters of sex or race) should be eliminated" (Merriam–Webster). George Pippin Professor Hays HMXP 201 29 July 2015 An Ideal Society Throughout history, we have seen many societies come and go regardless of how powerful or stable they were at one point. Is it possible to have a society which is ideal for all of it's members, or is society only capable of being beneficial to some and not to everyone? I do believe an ideal society could be achieved, but our current society would have to undertake a substantial overhaul. In today's society, there are more opinions and beliefs about the way it should be ran than there have ever been. An ideal society could be achieved through it's members treating their neighbors in a more religious way, a change in the way our current economy is operated, and by improving ... In Milton Friedman's story, The Relation Between Economic Freedom and Political Freedom, he speaks about what a free society should consist of, "One feature of a free society is surely the freedom of individuals to advocate and propagandize openly for a radical change in the structure of the society–––so long as the advocacy is restricted to persuasion and does not include force or other forms of coercion." (Friedman 63). The American democracy system revolutionized politics into what we know it to be today. A government of the people, by the people, for the people, was never made imaginable before America; but like all good things, overtime it can become corrupted. An ideal society would truly be what the people wanted. Democracy is by far the best political system that could be implemented, but there could be improvements. I do not believe being a politician should be a career choice, but it should be more of a duty to your country. We place trust in our governments to decide such things as going to war, healthcare, and overall the decisions that affect our lives. In order to make a proper decision on sending troops to war, I believe the decision makers should have had military experience. It is impossible to ask someone to go risk their lives when you have no idea the feeling or sacrifice they could possibly make. All members of the legislative branch, and the President, should be required to have served their country. Moreover, in an ideal society it's politicians would be held accountable for their actions. For example, during a review at your workplace, if your employer tells you that your satisfaction or approval rating is less than fifty percent by your peers, what do you think would happen to you? More than likely you would be fired, but why doesn't this same philosophy apply to the men and women who run a society? In order to keep politicians working for the ... Political Freedom And Economic Growth Essay Briefly detail your expectations about the relationship between political freedom and economic growth, as measured by real GDP per capita.– My expectations about this relationship are that as the political freedom rises so will economic growth which is expressed in terms of GDP per capita. since the independent variable political freedom is measured in units with 1 being the best, the correlation and the regression will be negative as the independent variable increase (political freedom decreases) which mean that GDP per capita will fall as well. I believe countries where there is a lack of political freedom and stability are likely to have a low economic growth compared to those who are more politically stable. This is due to the revolving government in which policies are created short term as there time in power is unknown. Explain how regression can be used to analyse the relationship between political freedom and real GDP per capita? –Regression is be used to show whether there is a positive or negative relationship between political freedom and GDP per capita. The coefficient of b determines the slope of the line and how an increase in X affects Y. The regression also determines the R squared which shows how closely the X and Y variable are correlated within the regression. However, freedom of speech is an issue which has been discussed and argued for a long time, not only in Malaysia but all around the world. It is discussed that how "free" a speech can be. Although by judging solely from the definition, political expression which covers the matters of public interest seems acceptable, it is undeniable that under the Act 10 of the Federal Constitution, clause 2 has stated that the parliament can impose law to restrict the freedom of speech. Such restrictions are said to protect the security of Malaysia, privileges of Parliament and the public order. Political Correctness Vs Freedom Of Speech Political Correctness vs Freedom of Speech Political correctness is the idea that certain words, policies, or opinions are too offensive and taboo that they should be censored. While this definition may seem unfair, that is exactly what it is. This idea of being politically correct is on the rise in America, with various factions and sides taking advantage of it. Most notedly, it has taken effect in such areas such as the media, academia, and industry. In these areas, employees, students, or any subject in question may be put to the test of whether or not their views are in line with politically correct guidelines. In many of these incidents, the subject in question may be reprimanded, ostracized, or otherwise punished for their crimes of thought or expression. This is a hotly debated topic in America, with both sides of the debate passionately disputing the worth of such a thing. Due to its widespread influence, it is debated in nearly every aspect of American life. These are three essential factors for a government to uphold, however of the three liberty is positioned higher than the other two unalienable rights; liberty being defined by the oxford dictionary as, "the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one's way of life, behavior, or political views" ("Liberty"). • 58. The Importance Of Freedom Of Speech Is it possible to imagine a civil democratic society without freedom of speech? The right of speech is one of the most valuable integrity a human being can have in this world. Precisely, this is an opportunity given by the right to talk open minded and give opinions about particular situations. However, what are the impacts on a total society of assuring the right of free speech? As far as I am concerned, free speech provides a check on corrupt, inefficient leadership and administrative personnel. Moreover, it is indirectly responsible for the higher standards of living to the extent that free speech promotes scientific discovery and dissemination, more effective means toward given societal goals, and more efficient governmental personnel. Some critics of free speech may argue that it leads to political instability and revolution as well. Freedom of speech exists mostly in democratic countries. In these particular countries politicians come into force through disputes and discussions. However, freedom is an important section of democratic society and in this case, it is considered as an affirmative right. If we take into account not only political life, we have to agree with the point that freedom of speech and thoughts is crucial for growth. Again, new ideas are born through arguments and discussions and this is the key to prosperity. Diversity of viewpoints and opinions create conditions that are ideal for evolution, progress and development. Indeed, there are other rights of freedom a human being can possess. Such as, freedom of press, worship, and religion etc. The fundamental right of the freedom of press implicit in the right the freedom of speech and expressions, is crucial for the political prosperity and proper functioning of democracy. Freedom of press is the center of social and political bonds. It is the principal duty of the courts to support the freedom of press and invalidate all laws or administrative actions, which intervene with it contrary to the constitutional mandate. • 62. Why Freedom And Equality Is An Artificial Creation Created... The aim of this essay is to explore whether freedom and equality is founded on natural moral principle or whether it is to an extent an artificial creation created by the political institution. To an extent, I do agree that freedom and equality are based on natural moral principles because during the state of nature human beings are able to enjoy freedom and equality as these seem are the rights that humans are borned along with. Therefore, it is sufficient to say that they exist in respect of the nature and with the intention from the God. This idea is further supported by many different philosophers such as John Locke and Thomas Aquinas. However, to a certain extent, I believe that political intitution such as law is an artificial tool to help restore freedom and equality in a society so that people can still enjoy these rights. Through the theory of social contract, it clearly shows that law plays an important role in enforcing the instead of the artificial creator of these rights. To find out whether freedom and equality are rest on natural moral principles, one has to ask is what the principle means. One of the basic moral principles is to follow what the nature intends and that is known as the natural law, by making decisions in respects of the nature of things . In terms of Natural law, it is to follow what is natural for human beings and the rest of creation. Therefore, I will examine the freedom and equality during the state of nature in order to prove that they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 64. Rhetorical Analysis Of Frederick Douglass 's ' The Great... Born a slave in Maryland but managed to escape in 1838 was one of the most influential African American leader, Frederick Douglass. A person who battled assiduously for the abolishment of slavery. His speech "The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro" is only one of his many great efforts to putting an end to slavery. The true subject matter of his speech is American slavery however in particular it addressed the hypocrisy of American slavery. Douglass's main argument in regards to his speech is followed by this rhetorical question "Are the great principles of political freedom and of natural justice, embodied in that Declaration of Independence, extended to us?" which sets up for the thesis "This Fourth of July is yours, not mine." Meaning that celebrating the fourth of July is all about independence and freedom but it is ironic how America reinforces this however following a system of trading slaves– snatching away the black people's freedom instead. Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in the year of 1818, but he successfully managed to escape becoming a leader of the abolitionist movement. Not only was he an abolitionist but also an orator, writer, and statesman. Douglass was a strong and passionate believer of equality amongst all people as he had famously said, "I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong." He was also the very first black citizen to hold a high government ranking in the U.S. Douglass was invited ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. Political Policies Inhibit Religious Freedom In Fidel... To what extent did restrictive political policies inhibit religious freedom in Fidel Castro's Cuba? From 1959 to1991 political policies in Cuba under Fidel Castro had prohibited religious freedom. This paper will debate the extent to which these restrictive political policies inhibited religious freedom. The reason why this essay is going to be mostly concentrated in Christianity is because the majority of the population in Cuba were Christians, primarily Roman Catholics. The Cuban society has a population that comes from mostly Spanish and African origins, and that's why some liked to practice other religions that come from African slaves. Most of the evidence and sources that were used to answer this question were books, all of these books gave different perspectives and point of views to examine different ... In Cuba's legal system there were some civil and political rights that were not permitted, like the freedom of assembly, expression, economic, social right, and the most important one, religion. In 1962, Fidel Castro believed that Catholic schools were going to distribute dangerous beliefs to the society, so he decided to seize and close down more than 400 of the schools, including the Jesuit high school that he and his brother, Raul Castro, attended. According to the Roman Catholic Church records, in the 1969s 60 percent of the population in Cuba were Catholic, but out of that 60 percent only 5 percent were attending mass regularly and practiced their religion since they were not allowed to by the government and some Cubans were scared of what may ... • 68. Political Freedoms: Social Problems In The United States There are many social issues facing our society and people today, the biggest of which is political freedoms. These issues that overwhelm our society include civil rights, freedom of the press, and freedom of speech. The United States is a very progressive state in where they allowed to believe, say, and do whatever you want, but within the laws set up by white Christian men who knew nothing about the future and what it held for the people who live now. Now in this day and age we face much more difficult problems than plagues and the starting of a new nation, we have to soldier through the pain and strife of a difference of opinion. This problem is caused by the people having an option of what goes on in their life. The people have made the wrong decisions with their life, giving power to the wrong people, killing, believing in a God or Gods, and even deciding what occupation they get to have. This has ruined our entire system; we now have political debates ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... You see I have come up with a somewhat modest proposal as a solution to all of our problems. What I have come up with is to first destroy any type of media outlet that would allow people to voice their opinions to others over a widespread and inerasable place. Of course politics would have to be thrown out because at the end of the day that is what causes most of the debating and fighting throughout our people. But then we would have to throw out their beliefs! Do not worry your pretty little heads, I have already thought of that. Due to the fact that our political ideals are mainly routed down to our religious views all we have to do is to get rid of religion. It is quite easy, in fact we are already on our way to it naturally and my way would just speed up the process a few years. We reprogram the people to instead of worshipping a God, Gods, or a specific person/place/thing, to worship drugs and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. Author History Author History – Support of Religious and Political Freedoms in Sonnet XV John Milton, born December 9, 1608, is considered one of England's greatest poets. But Milton was not only a poet, he was also a political figure. Milton supported the British Civil War and the Puritan government of Oliver Cromwell. Knowing this background, it is no surprise that many of Milton's writings contain his strong religious and political beliefs. Sonnet XV, a plea to Lord Fairfax to help the new Commonwealth government be successful, displays Milton's concern with holy and virtuous ideals, his disdain for the rule of the English monarchy, and his pro–Puritan republican political beliefs. Milton's holy and virtuous values were influenced by his study ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Sonnet XV Milton also shows his dislike for the king. He refers to the king as a "serpent" (line 8) and the king's followers as "hydra heads" (line 7) or monsters. In the sonnet, he also refers to the king's government as full of "Avarice and Rapine" (line 14), greed, looting, plunder, and corruption. He further showed his disdain for the monarchy, when he wrote Eikonoklastes ("image breaker"), which was the Puritan government's official response supporting the former King's execution (Danielson 15). Milton did not just hate the monarchy, he supported a republican government. Milton supported the Puritan ideals of religious freedom and establishment of a "more democratic system of government" where all adult males had the right to vote (Norbrook 109). In 1649, Milton was asked to work to support the new Puritan government (Danielson 14). He worked for 11 years as a secretary in the Commonwealth government. He wrote articles and pamphlets that "defended the new government and attacked its adversaries" (Danielson 15). Sonnet XV shows these ideas as Milton pleads with Lord Fairfax to help rid the "Avarice and Rapine" (Line 14) of the Royalist government. Additionally, Milton saw "Public Fraud" (line 13) as "shameful" and as such, the "Public Faith" (line 12), which Milton equated with "National Honor" (Honigmann 142), had to be removed from that fraud for the new government to succeed. • 72. Concept of Freedom in Political Theory Why is the concept of freedom so contested in political theory? (Word maximum: 1,500) Freedom is an important concept in Western politics, strongly entwined as it is with ideas of liberalism. Yet, as suggested by the question, the concept is one which is hotly debated. Indeed, political agents attempt to control the political agenda through promotion of their particular definition. This essay will look at the ways freedom has been defined by different theorists over the years. It will also look at how freedom is linked with and explained through different theo–ries and ideologies. It will then go on to look at how these different theories and ideologies may shape the conceptions of freedom we find in our daily lives. Different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This approach may be considered stifling of both innovation and effort, since anything above the average will not be rewarded. By contrast, if equality of opportunity is achieved, then some will accumulate more wealth and power than others, giving them effectively more freedom. John Rawls (1971, cited in Middleton, 2005) introduced two principles of justice, the first of which was that 'each person is to have an equal right to the most extensive liberty compatible with a similar liberty for others'. Rawls attempted to address the question of inequality through the second of his principles: the 'difference principle'. In this he said that it was acceptable for some to be better off than others as long as by doing so the poorest people also benefitted in some way. In other words, inequality was acceptable if some of the extra benefit were redistributed to those most in need. This approach is an example of positive freedom. However, Isaiah Berlin (1969, cited in Smith, 2005), known as a chief architect of theories of positive and negative freedom, saw dangers in this approach too. He argued that it was wrong to ascribe to individuals a set of common needs and desires. Moreover, he considered that the surrender of individual freedom for collective self–rule could result in individual rights being violated. He concluded that a measure of both ... • 74. The Berlin Wall: The Fight For Political Freedom Seen repeatedly throughout history, it is evident that the fight for political freedom is often suppressed when individuals repress their thoughts and refuse to speak out against oppressors. A common occurrence throughout major events in history, it has become obvious that doing the right thing in society can only be done successfully when individuals act upon their moral impulses. However, the initiation of acting upon such inclinations is often overlooked and repressed due to the pasts of individuals. Psychologically affecting how individuals act and respond to societal issues, the repression of thoughts and ideas against acting out and taking a stand in society because of such pasts has become indisputably obvious over time. Unmistakably ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is evident throughout history, as seen in the works of many global and influential leaders. Ronald Reagan exemplifies this idea in his speech at the Berlin Wall on June 12, 1987. "As long as the gate is closed, as long as this scar of a wall is permitted to stand," Reagan explained, "it is not the German question alone that remains open, but the question of freedom of all mankind" (Eidenmuller 2). His speech exemplified a point that all global leaders were trying to make at the time: the barricade nature of the Berlin Wall "[could not] withstand truth" (Eidenmuller 6), and "stood to restrain... freedom" (Jens 1). At this point in history, most of the world was too afraid to speak out against the Communist leaders stationed in West Berlin. By bypassing any unspoken rules present at the time, Reagan faced the most feared Communists of the world and spoke against their practices. Reagan explained,"in the Communist world, we see failure, technological backwardness, declining standards of health," and continued to explain how "freedom leads to prosperity... freedom is the victor" (Eidenmuller 3). If he were to have not begged Mikhail Gorbachev to "tear down this wall" (Eidenmuller 3), it is no question that the freedom of those living under Communist rule would have been compromised. Henry Thoreau also presses this point in his works. He questioned if there could "be a government in which majorities do not virtually decide right and wrong, but conscience" (Saxby 2). Emphasizing how people need to decide for themselves what the difference between right and wrong truly is, Thoreau pressed the idea that one must not repress their thoughts in speaking out, as "a minority is powerless when it conforms to the majority... it is irresistible when it clogs by its whole weight" (Saxby 8). When one casts their vote, they should not be "willing to leave it to the majority" because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This article assists in assessing the several burdens placed on the media 2013–2014 and its impact on Australia's status as a democracy placing high value on press autonomy. The article also discusses the restrictions effected by the recent decisions and actions of Australian politicians, judges and government agencies that affect media freedom. Sweden passed the Freedom of the Press Act which goes hand in hand with the freedom of expression.
