The community has a big challenge maintaining the grass on the multiple golf courses within a
desert state with little water recourses. Scottsdale pioneered wastewater reuse and water banking
which recycles water within the community thus decreasing the need to import water. The
community aims to conserve its natural water resources, preserve its meaningful open space, and
enhance the character areas that make Scottsdale such a desirable place to live (City of Scottsdale,
2013). Rated number ten as one of America's most playful cities, Scottsdale values resources like
hiking trails and museums while boasting weather for walkability and healthy lifestyle choices
(Sperling's Best Places, 2013), yet some of the community functional health pattern results reveal
certain unhealthy trends. Scottsdale ranks in the top ten in caffeine consumption in the nation
(Prince Market Research, 2008), although low in nicotine consumption (30 Cities with Smoking
Problems, 2013), alcohol (Ewalt & Vander Broek, 2008), and drugs (Vardi, 2009). Despite the
extensive outdoor recreational areas, a high percentage of time is spent on sedentary leisure
activities such as television viewing with 33.3% of adolescents watching television three or more
hours a day. And, only 25.7% participate in physical activities that last sixty minutes in a one–week

Introduction
The definition of Community, Netting, Kettner, McMurty and Thomas (2012) stated by Warren
(1978) "Community is the combination of social units and systems that perform the major social
functions relevant to meeting people's needs on a local level."(p.133). Understanding communities is
important to social workers as they have, Netting et al (2012) "to know individuals functions within
larger systems, understanding of its history and that communities constantly change" (p. 168). A
community has many parts that make it work together; when one part is not working well, it affects
the entire system. Social Workers are able to analyze, interpret data and work with community
groups and leaders to find solutions to improve the workings of that community to its full potential.
This community immersion analysis will focus on its community's social agencies, diversity and

Since this isn't a large population in the county it is easily overlooked and not too many things are

Network for abused and battered women, homeless shelter, and food shelves to ease the hardships of

There have been many indicators that have been developed to measure inflation. The CPI measures
inflation as experienced by consumers through their everyday expenses. The Producer Price Index
(PPI) measures inflation during the early stages of business development, such as production and

According to the December 2012 United States Census Bureau Population Projection, the nation
will continue its trend of consistent diversification. By 2024, the non–Hispanic white population
will show a decrease in numbers. Minorities including Hispanics, African Americans and Asians
will double, and other groups will increase by at least half. Eventually, non–Hispanic whites will not
be seen as a majority, but as an equally represented group among its ethnic counterparts (U.S.
Bureau, 2014). This projection can not be transposed to the country's nursing population. Non–

population of children, under the age of 18, from child abuse and neglect; however, over the years

According to Gonzalez (2014), despite economic growth for households Nationally and in Colorado,
Latino/a households in Colorado are still making approximately $17,542 less than the average
median household income (pg. 5). Disparate economic differences for Latino/a Coloradans includes
West Colfax, where the Latino/a community accounts for approximately 55% of the population,
roughly 5109 persons, with 42% of Latino/a's in West Colfax living in poverty (West Colfax, 2013).
Income–based statistics are provided by the Piton foundation as well as the Colorado Latino
Leadership, Advocacy and Research Organization (CLLARO) who seek to provide accurate
information which can be used to help improve the lives of low–income and Latino/a population.
Inspection reveals that the Piton foundation Board of Directors consists of predominantly White,
male men which raises the concern that their data is biased due to their privilege and that "for–profit
and philanthropic solutions" masks benefitting privileged populations inside of helping low–income

In this study, I will examine the relationship between poverty and homicide. I anticipate that there
will be a significant association between the increase of poverty rates and the increase of homicide
rates. The null hypothesis states that there is no significance relationship between poverty and

The sample size is a non probability sampling. The problem with non probability sampling is that an
element being drawn is not known, so there is no way to tell if the sample chosen represents the
population (Madden & Walker, 2005, p. 333). Although there are slight problems in using a non

Data Collection and Measurement
The independent variable is poverty and the dependent variable is homicide. I use Economic
Research Service (ERS), U.S. Census Bureau, and The Federal Bureau Investigation's (FBI)
Uniform Crime Report (UCR) for secondary sources.
The units of analysis being studied are States. The data measurements on poverty were taken from
the United States Census Bureau. The U.S. Census Bureau uses a set of income thresholds of
various family sizes and composition to determine who falls under the poverty guidelines (U.S.
Census Bureau, Poverty, 2010). The income used to compute poverty status is money before taxes
and does not include capital gains or noncash benefits, such as public assistance and Medicaid (U.S.
Census Bureau, Poverty, 2010). If a family's income total is less than the family's threshold, then the
family or individuals are considered to be in poverty (U.S. Census Bureau, Poverty, 2010). The
same poverty thresholds are used throughout the United States

food stamps. The report continues to notate statistics that this is a dramatic increase from the one in
eight children that received benefits prior to the recession as of 2007, and that the number of

The American Dream is likable to any other living entity in that it will constantly change in order to
conform to the environment to which it occupies. To garner a further understanding of the abstract
concept that is the "American Dream" I looked to the writings of early American novelists such as
Thomas Wolfe and, the original coiner of said term, James Truslow Adams. In their writings, they

interrupt and end homelessness may vary across groups, ending homelessness permanently requires

The study of inequality in America is vital to understanding the complicated political and social
issues in America. Barrington, Illinois, my home town, is the picture of upper–middle class
suburbia. It is a town with very little inequality, and very little diversity, but one which reveals some
basic truths about inequality in America. One must first look at a snapshot of what Barrington
socioeconomic structure is, then evaluate this structure through the theories of inequality. After
these, and a quick evaluation of preconceived notions on Barrington's inequality versus the real data,
and a comparison of Barrington's data to that of the United States as a whole, some conclusions can
be drawn. These data reveal a strong correlation between Barrington's lack of economic inequality,
and lack of demographic and social diversity.
Barrington, Illinois is what many would consider to be a very economically homogeneous city, a
vital characteristic in examining its inequality (or lack thereof). It is one of the generally more
wealthy cities in the State of Illinois, with a median household income of $106,127, and a relatively
low poverty rate at only nine point two percent (U.S. Census Bureau 2014b). With over 25 percent
of families in this town making over $200,000 per year, only four percent making less than $25,000
per year, and a striking 84.6 percent of families making at least $50,000 per year it is fair to say that
there is far less inequality here than in many cities (U.S.

covered in the chapter, Klass's methodology and findings can be discussed and evaluated. Klass
introduces the chapter by telling a brief anecdote about Bill Cosby and how he responded to
criticism he received regarding a speech he gave to commemorate the Brown v. Board of Education
case. In his speech, Cosby made a lot of claims about issues such as African Americans dropping out
of school in such high percentages and the incarceration rates of blacks resulting from a lack of
