Scottsdale: Community Assessment and Analysis Scottsdale, Arizona was incorporated in 1951 and
is the sixth largest city in Arizona (City of Scottsdale, 2013). Scottsdale is 184.2 square miles
located in the picturesque Sonoran Desert nestled just east of Phoenix, north of the Salt River Pima
Indian Community, and west of the McDowell Mountains. The city's official slogan is "The West's
Most Western Town." The city is a prime area for new urban growth ... Show more content on

The community has a big challenge maintaining the grass on the multiple golf courses within a
desert state with little water recourses. Scottsdale pioneered wastewater reuse and water banking
which recycles water within the community thus decreasing the need to import water. The
community aims to conserve its natural water resources, preserve its meaningful open space, and
enhance the character areas that make Scottsdale such a desirable place to live (City of Scottsdale,
2013). Rated number ten as one of America's most playful cities, Scottsdale values resources like
hiking trails and museums while boasting weather for walkability and healthy lifestyle choices
(Sperling's Best Places, 2013), yet some of the community functional health pattern results reveal
certain unhealthy trends. Scottsdale ranks in the top ten in caffeine consumption in the nation
(Prince Market Research, 2008), although low in nicotine consumption (30 Cities with Smoking
Problems, 2013), alcohol (Ewalt & Vander Broek, 2008), and drugs (Vardi, 2009). Despite the
extensive outdoor recreational areas, a high percentage of time is spent on sedentary leisure
activities such as television viewing with 33.3% of adolescents watching television three or more
hours a day. And, only 25.7% participate in physical activities that last sixty minutes in a one–week
time period (CDC–Arizona, 2010). Scottsdale also has the less desirable top ten ranking for U.S.

Community Immersion Analysis On Community
Introduction
The definition of Community, Netting, Kettner, McMurty and Thomas (2012) stated by Warren
(1978) "Community is the combination of social units and systems that perform the major social
functions relevant to meeting people's needs on a local level."(p.133). Understanding communities is
important to social workers as they have, Netting et al (2012) "to know individuals functions within
larger systems, understanding of its history and that communities constantly change" (p. 168). A
community has many parts that make it work together; when one part is not working well, it affects
the entire system. Social Workers are able to analyze, interpret data and work with community
groups and leaders to find solutions to improve the workings of that community to its full potential.
This community immersion analysis will focus on its community's social agencies, diversity and
cultural richness. Systems Theory applies to this area as the macro system of this community's main
downtown street is filled with stores, restaurants, cultural establishments where locals as well as
tourist convene (Netting, 2012) "that carries out production as well as school and religious sites
work to socialize community members." (P.140)
Community Demographics Ventura's downtown area is in the west area direction of Ventura situated
along the pacific coastline. The downtown area is considered historic with its rich history of culture,
diversity and a long standing for grassroots organizations and

order to do that, HUD must make the content discoverable and user–friendly to people that may
benefit from its use. In previous documents, functional users have been identified as policy analysts,

Isanti County Neighborhood Education Case Study
Background Information
Isanti County Minnesota was established in 1857 and is currently home to approximately 38,429
people. The word Isanti comes from an area of the Dakotas called Izatys, which means, "Dwell at
Knife Lake" (Isanti County Gov. Center). Currently the population of Isanti County is made up of
96% of white people other races making up Isanti County include; African American, American
Indian, Asian, and Hispanic (US Census Bureau). The majority of the population has education
including a high school diploma or higher (US Census Bureau). Persons with a Bachelors degree or
higher are 17.1% (US Census Bureau). Isanti County has a 7.8% poverty rate (US Census Bureau).

Since this isn't a large population in the county it is easily overlooked and not too many things are
done in efforts so support or help this population. The response this population gets from the
community is not much, but there are a few things to help tem out. Isanti County has a Refuge
Network for abused and battered women, homeless shelter, and food shelves to ease the hardships of
poverty (Isanti County Gov. Center). These resources help to support this population in Isanti
County as well. In dealing constructively with this issue Isanti County also has been making efforts
toward making affordable housing for low income families and seniors (Isanti County Public Health
2015). This is in efforts to help people escape poverty. The effort to help people out of poverty in
this community could be greater. The county may not have a huge problem with people in poverty
but it is still there and should not be over looked. There could be more resources available to people
in need, one being job assistance programs to help people in poverty to get jobs. The efforts do seem
to be growing in support of people in poverty but there still is plenty of room to grow

Census Bureau and the U.S. Department Commerce puts out. As far as the sampling data, the U.S.
Census Bureau categorizes retailers by industry group. The sampling data is then sub–stratified by
the measure of size of each industry related to their annual sales. Sampling units that are projected to
have a large effect on the precision of the estimates are selected "with certainty", meaning they are
sure to be selected and will only represent themselves. Within each industry rank, the U.S. Census
Bureau determines a cutoff, based on results from data of the 2007 Economic Census, that divides
the certainty units from the noncertainty units. Accordingly, these values are on a 2007 basis. The
year 2007 was the year leading up to the 2008 recession and housing market crash. Comparing our
current retail sales data to that of 2007 is only going to make it appear as we have a thriving
economy, which in reality, we don't. I truly believe that we should update our base year to a more
current one, perhaps 2014. Doing so will reflect more precisely how well our economy is doing and
not give us false advertisement.

Economic Indicators Paper
What does it mean when someone refers to the health of an economy? Furthermore, how can one
classify an economy? Americans love to quantify data. Because of this inherent need to compare
data, economists have developed a way to collect nearly every type of statistics that may reveal the
general health of the economy. These statistics actually tell if the economy is productive and
efficient or if it is slow and inefficient. Included in these statistics are Gross Domestic Product
(GDP), Consumer Price Index (CPI), Unemployment Rate, Retail Sales, Producer Price Index (PPI),
and Personal Income. Included in this paper, Team A defines the preceding six indicators, and

There have been many indicators that have been developed to measure inflation. The CPI measures
inflation as experienced by consumers through their everyday expenses. The Producer Price Index
(PPI) measures inflation during the early stages of business development, such as production and
sales. The best measure of inflation for a given application depends upon how one intends to use this
data. CPI allows businesses to adjust prices based upon a comparison of the current cost of a defined
set of goods and/or services to the cost of those same goods at a time in the past. It is also, "the best
measure to use to translate retail sales and hourly earnings into real or inflation–free dollars" (2005).
The CPI is the most widely used measure of inflation and is sometimes viewed as an indicator of the
effectiveness of government economic policy. It provides information about price changes in the
Nation's economy to government, business, labor, and private citizens and is used by them as a
guide to making economic decisions. In addition, the President, Congress, and the Federal Reserve
Board use trends in the CPI to aid in formulating fiscal and monetary policies.
Retail Sales Retail sales, represent an important component in the economy. Products sold by
companies, such as Target and local retail stores are tracked and reported to the Census Bureau. The
Census Bureau compiles this data on a monthly basis

Social Change: Poverty and Education Essay
Abstract
When treating psychological patients, there are many factors which need to be considered. In fact,
depending on the problem, the context under which the evaluation takes place may influence the
outcome of the evaluation. Looking for solutions to psychological problems, there are times when
known relationships can be leveraged to make a difference. In this paper, the relationship between
education and poverty, in light of psychological inquiry, will be considered, compared and
contrasted within multiple contexts.

individual will pay for treatment by his/her own volition. In the context of a family whose family

United States Census Bureau Population Projection
According to the December 2012 United States Census Bureau Population Projection, the nation
will continue its trend of consistent diversification. By 2024, the non–Hispanic white population
will show a decrease in numbers. Minorities including Hispanics, African Americans and Asians
will double, and other groups will increase by at least half. Eventually, non–Hispanic whites will not
be seen as a majority, but as an equally represented group among its ethnic counterparts (U.S.
Bureau, 2014). This projection can not be transposed to the country's nursing population. Non–
Hispanic white nurses often vastly outnumber other groups (Bessent, 2009, p6). The nursing
workforce needs to actively and continually diversify its professionals to provide competent care for
the nation's ever–changing population. The first step to gaining an equally represented nursing
workforce is to ensure all races receive an opportunity to advance their education and become
registered nurses. Many cultural beliefs are obstacles for minorities. Families believe that a woman's
place is just within the household or that college is not an option for their children (Wros, Doutrich,
and Ruiz, 2009). The nursing industry must advertise vigilantly to both the children and their
families that culture should not hold anyone back from achieving their goals, and a nursing career is
a good goal to want to achieve. When asked what could be done to increase the amount of minority

Cultural Landscape Analysis
Dayna Richards I chose to investigate the cultural landscape of Fredericksburg, Virginia. Through
my research of its history and demographic information, pictures of different aspect of the city, and
my personal experience of living in the city for the majority of my life, I was able to understand and
analyze the cultural landscape. Specifically, I addressed the housing, economics, importance of
history, and religion in the Fredericksburg area. All of these aspects are crucial in interpreting the
cultural landscape of Fredericksburg.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Fredericksburg has a total population of
321,418,820. The racial composition of the city is 77.1% White alone, 13.3% Black or African

From the many monuments and landmarks built in honor of those who fought in the civil war to the
visitor center that is dedicated to preserving the historical relics of the city, one can immediately
sense the historical significance of Fredericksburg. Fredericksburg played a major role during the
Civil War due to its location between Washington, D.C. and Richmond, the two capitals of the
Union and the Confederacy. Two important battles in the war, the Battle of Fredericksburg and the
Second Battle of Fredericksburg, were fought there. Consequently, there are many places and
landmarks dedicated to memorializing those who fought in the two major battles. Additionally, as
the City of Fredericksburg was established by an act of the Virginia General Assembly in 1728, it
contains more than 350 original 18th and 19th century buildings. Among these are Goolrick's, which
operates the oldest soda fountain in America, the Hugh Mercer Apothecary, and Chatham Manor.

Child Abuse Prevention Act
The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act of 1974 was originally created to protect a target
population of children, under the age of 18, from child abuse and neglect; however, over the years
this act has been amended and improved to protect a wider population, with many specific
subpopulations, over the past 42 years. In the original text of the act, two specific populations are
addressed with different goals: reducing the rate of child abuse in children under the age of eighteen,
and improving the treatment of children who had been maltreated or neglected (National Low
Income Housing Coalition, 2014). It is easy to see that this act and policies within it are aimed at

in a number of ways. It has changed the way that society views child abuse and neglect, which has,
in turn, benefited the psychological, emotional, and developmental health of children throughout the
country. When the act was developed, congress estimated that approximately 60,000 children
throughout the United States were victims of abuse or neglect, yet there was no certain way to
measure or calculate the extent of the problem (CAPTA, 2014). As a result of this act, policies were
put into place to define and measure child abuse and neglect, therefore making it easier to attack.
Throughout the years, CAPTA has evolved and each amendment or revision has strengthened the
protection that the act offers to children. Some of these revisions included protections for the
homeless or those at risk of becoming homeless, foster youth, and created community based
resources for families with a high risk of experiencing abuse and neglect (CAPTA, 2014). The
effects of this policy; however, do not lie strictly within the lines of personal

According to Gonzalez (2014), despite economic growth for households Nationally and in Colorado,
Latino/a households in Colorado are still making approximately $17,542 less than the average
median household income (pg. 5). Disparate economic differences for Latino/a Coloradans includes
West Colfax, where the Latino/a community accounts for approximately 55% of the population,
roughly 5109 persons, with 42% of Latino/a's in West Colfax living in poverty (West Colfax, 2013).
Income–based statistics are provided by the Piton foundation as well as the Colorado Latino

populations (Who we are, n.d., para. 2). The CLLARO's board is representative of the client they
seek to serve and thus bias does not extend to their work (Our Staff, n.d.).

The Role Of Viewing The World With A Bigger Lens Rather...
It is easy to be blind to how different peoples lives are from each other. We are so fixed in our habits
that we forget to think about how every one of our actions is influential to other individuals. As I
have practiced thinking like a sociologist over the course of four months, I have practiced looking at
the world with a bigger lens rather than my narrow–minded viewpoint. C. Wright Mills coined the
term "the sociological imagination," which is the importance of viewing the world as a whole and
how everyone plays a part in it. We can not just rely on ourselves and our own experiences to know
what the world is all about. Being the second youngest of eleven children certainly doesn't seem

Wright Mills). Public issues, or things that have a much broader impact on society, such as the
whole nation being in debt (C. Wright Mills), have never affected me personally because of my
status within society, so I haven't cared to look at those issues. Considering that St. Cloud is
predominately white Catholics, one of these public issues in my hometown is the racism towards
Somalians. In the past 10 years, the Somali population has grown significantly which has made
racism more apparent in St. Cloud. As soon as the Somali population started to show more active
roles in the community, the people of St. Cloud started to discriminate and insinuate that they were
ruining the city. Once it was announced that the Muslim population would be building a new
mosque, City Hall flooded with comments about how it would jam residential roads and foster
terrorism (Du). My family is in the middle class, along with an estimated 33.9% of the population of
St. Cloud (US Census Bureau). My social class has altered over the years as the situation in my
household, such as children moving out and parents switching jobs, has changed. Eleven children in
one household has played a significant role in whether my parents' income was actually substantial.
The average household in America has 2.63 people living in it (US Census Bureau).

Poverty and Homicide Essay
Hypothesis
In this study, I will examine the relationship between poverty and homicide. I anticipate that there
will be a significant association between the increase of poverty rates and the increase of homicide
rates. The null hypothesis states that there is no significance relationship between poverty and
homicide. The alternative hypothesis states that there will be a significant relationship between
poverty and homicide. The two theories I found to explain the increase of poverty and homicide
rates in the urban community are Merton's strain theory and Shaw and McKay's social
disorganization theory. Merton's strain theory states that social structures limits access to the goal of
success through legitimate means (Lilly et al., 1995, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The sample size is a non probability sampling. The problem with non probability sampling is that an
element being drawn is not known, so there is no way to tell if the sample chosen represents the
population (Madden & Walker, 2005, p. 333). Although there are slight problems in using a non
probability sampling, it is more convenient, less expensive, and easier to collect data than other
sampling methods (Madden & Walker, 2005, p. 333).
Data Collection and Measurement
The independent variable is poverty and the dependent variable is homicide. I use Economic
Research Service (ERS), U.S. Census Bureau, and The Federal Bureau Investigation's (FBI)
Uniform Crime Report (UCR) for secondary sources.
The units of analysis being studied are States. The data measurements on poverty were taken from
the United States Census Bureau. The U.S. Census Bureau uses a set of income thresholds of
various family sizes and composition to determine who falls under the poverty guidelines (U.S.
Census Bureau, Poverty, 2010). The income used to compute poverty status is money before taxes
and does not include capital gains or noncash benefits, such as public assistance and Medicaid (U.S.
Census Bureau, Poverty, 2010). If a family's income total is less than the family's threshold, then the
family or individuals are considered to be in poverty (U.S. Census Bureau, Poverty, 2010). The
same poverty thresholds are used throughout the United States

The United States Census Bureau Agency
The United States Census Bureau reported in a recent news release that one in five children receive
food stamps. The report continues to notate statistics that this is a dramatic increase from the one in
eight children that received benefits prior to the recession as of 2007, and that the number of
children living in single parent households has tripled from the information gathered in 1940. (1)
These parents struggle on a daily basis to provide for their children in a manner that is barely
comfortable by middle class standards. Aside from the challenge of providing basic nutrition, these
parents are challenged with furnishing their families with a roof over their heads, basic utilities, a
safe child care experience, and sufficient clothing to wear to school. These parents already have to
sift through hand me downs from relatives and community organizations for clothing with minimal
stains and shoes without holes in them. When their utilities are about to be shut off, they sometimes
wait in lines for hours for a small grant to help keep the lights on and the house warm. They have to

The American Dream
The American Dream is likable to any other living entity in that it will constantly change in order to
conform to the environment to which it occupies. To garner a further understanding of the abstract
concept that is the "American Dream" I looked to the writings of early American novelists such as
Thomas Wolfe and, the original coiner of said term, James Truslow Adams. In their writings, they
had described the "American Dream" to be, in essence, the representation of the pursuit of a given
individual to reach and attain their respective goal through hard work and determination (Library of
Congress, 2017). For many, the American Dream consists of potentially attaining their respective
dream career, settling down, owning a home, and starting a family that can thrive in that home.
Unfortunately for many Americans, career aspiration do not always play out the way that we intend
for them to. In the place of attainment of career goals some settle at buying their own home. Though
much has changed since the term was first coined in the early 1930s, the American Dream continues
to thrive today, no matter the trials nor tribulations. In this particular day and age, we consider the
development of the American millennial generation and their pursuit of said dream. According to the
most recent data provided by the U.S. Census Bureau, homeownership among millennials has been
on a steady decrease since 2004 falling from roughly less than 45% to less than 35% (Annual

Homelessness
Lakeland is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States, located between the two larger cities in
central Florida those being Tampa to the west and Orlando to the east. While interventions to
interrupt and end homelessness may vary across groups, ending homelessness permanently requires
housing combined with the types of services supported by programs operated by the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This paper will address demographics for the
area, identify the social issue of homelessness, and address using a social action model for
community change, and the strengths and weaknesses of the model.
According to the United States Census Bureau estimate, Lakeland had a population of 100,710 (US
Census Bureau, 2006). According to the Lakeland Economic Development Council, the numbers of
existing households in 2013 were 41,833 (2013). The average household income in 2013 for
Lakeland was $50,064, with the median household income at $36,495. The average hourly wage in
2013 was $18.18. Lakelands labor force for 2013 was 42,658. There were 39521 employed in 2013.
The unemployed number was 3137 for 2013, setting the population of the unemployed for Lakeland
at 7.40%. However, in 2013 the job growth raised only .37% (City of Lakeland, Florida, 2014).

The Effects Of Technology On The Classroom
Classrooms today look almost nothing like the classrooms of past generations. Modern classrooms
revolve around technology, every room has either a projector or smart board front and center. A
significant amount of homework is submitted digitally, and a computer is often a class requirement.
Many studies have shown the positive effects these teaching and learning techniques have, and the
results are not often disputed. Technology is helping educate students even at the elementary level,
but studies are showing a decline in average IQ compared to data collected in the last half a century
or so when this technology didn't exist. A study by the U.S. Census Bureau showed a 2.44–point IQ

Rob Asghar wrote in his article "4 Ways Your Smartphone Is Making You Dumber" in Forbes
magazine that, "Chronic under sleeping can lead to 15 points or more of IQ loss" (par 2). The ability
to throw away up to fifteen IQ points is truly a first world privilege that is a huge contributor to the
decline of intelligence in America: fortunately, this problem is easily fixed by placing mobile
devices out of arms reach at night and self–imposing a healthy sleep schedule. Not all the
contributing factors are as easily fixed as distancing one's self from distractions though, one of the
issues causing average intelligence to decrease lies in the trends of low educated families increasing
their numbers at a higher rate than ones with educated parents. The population of the United States
in 1950 was just over 153 million people, compared to the current population of 323 million. In less
than a century the Population of the U.S. has more than doubled. Understanding how averages work,
a higher number of overall people will balance out the average and cause the outliers in both
directions to essentially be covered up. This means that with a higher population, it takes a massive
amount of either higher or lower IQs to change the average significantly. The fact that average IQ is
decreasing means that most of the increased population since 1950 had a below average IQ.

Post-Modernism Essay
In recent years, multiculturalism, tolerance and political correctness have been integrated into how
American society thinks. America seems to be trying to learn more about the ingredients of her
melting pot. These efforts can be best understood by examining post–modernism. Post–modernism
is especially important to breaking down stereotypes such as those that exist surrounding the black
family.
To understand post–modernism we must first understand modernism. Modernism is the philosophy
that began with the Enlightenment. The Enlightenment was an era when science and art flourished.

The meta–narrative for the black family is defined by the Western standards: income and education
and any other quantifiable unit.
The history of the black family is difficult to research according to Barnetta McGhee White because
there are few written documents to substantiate the oral history (Staples, 1991 p.50). In terms of the
prevailing meta–narrative, familial ties must be documented by family trees. Black families, due to
the breakdown of the family through the slave trade, rely on oral history to tell the story of their
lineage (Staples, 1991, p 51). The genealogy of author Barnetta McGhee White helps illustrate
certain points. The first is that since a majority of the research into genealogy is dependent on
written documents dating into the founding years of this nation, these documents are only telling
what the writer wants the reader to know. The history of black families is told through the story of
the slaveholder and, thus, gives information relevant to the business of slavery–everything that
measurable. Another point is that those in power in the past control the future. If current society is
viewed in chronicled terms, there is little control blacks can have over the account of their family
history because it will always be in terms of the dominant meta–narrative based on modernity. The
conclusion to be made by the former points is that modern thought is to blame for stereotypes
against blacks.

They call this test the High School Proficiency Examination or HSPE. According to the Center on
Education Policy (CEP), they administer the reading, math, and science tests together in grade ten;
however, the writing exam is done separately in grade 11 (CEP, 2010, p. 15). Nevada seems to be
the only state that separates the exams into two separate years, but there is no evidence that this
could negatively impact their state test scores. However, Nevada is not a high scoring state. In fact,
the national assessment of education progress conducted by IES (Institute of Education Sciences),
shows that all of the scores for Nevada are significantly lower than the national average (2011). The
tests used to measure academic achievement (not the exit exam) is conducted in every state to
produce information on how each state is performing individually. So, why is Nevada testing lower
than most states? Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to this question, but it might be helpful to
compare Nevada to a state that has seen more success. Wisconsin is among the nation's best
performing states as long as test scores and graduation rates are considered. The state has higher test
scores than the national averages according to IES (2011). Wisconsin, however, is very different

The Inequality Of The United States
The study of inequality in America is vital to understanding the complicated political and social
issues in America. Barrington, Illinois, my home town, is the picture of upper–middle class
suburbia. It is a town with very little inequality, and very little diversity, but one which reveals some
basic truths about inequality in America. One must first look at a snapshot of what Barrington
socioeconomic structure is, then evaluate this structure through the theories of inequality. After
these, and a quick evaluation of preconceived notions on Barrington's inequality versus the real data,
and a comparison of Barrington's data to that of the United States as a whole, some conclusions can
be drawn. These data reveal a strong correlation between Barrington's lack of economic inequality,
and lack of demographic and social diversity.
Barrington, Illinois is what many would consider to be a very economically homogeneous city, a
vital characteristic in examining its inequality (or lack thereof). It is one of the generally more
wealthy cities in the State of Illinois, with a median household income of $106,127, and a relatively
low poverty rate at only nine point two percent (U.S. Census Bureau 2014b). With over 25 percent
of families in this town making over $200,000 per year, only four percent making less than $25,000
per year, and a striking 84.6 percent of families making at least $50,000 per year it is fair to say that
there is far less inequality here than in many cities (U.S.

it is going to be necessary to house these prospering families. Also, the establishment of stores are

they both are going to vary in certain aspects. Neighborhood stores are stores that provides
accommodations to the locals. Malls, on the other hand, are large buildings made of multiple
competitive retails stores. Nevertheless, neighborhood stores and malls seem very similar, but when
looking at their square footages, remoteness from home, and marketability, they are quite different.
Community stores tend to be small, whereas malls are quite large. A commonly known

Donald Hutcherson, an Ohio sociologist put this into a financial prospective in one of his researches
by comparing illegal earnings of ex–convicts and those without prior conviction. Hutcherson finds
that the former earns an average of $1,070 in illegal income while the latter only manages $120
(Barnes, 2013). The higher earning average after a stint behind bar is a good indicator of how prison
can help broaden criminal network and knowledge for some of these convicts.
One of the most heinous crimes in the prison system is sex offense – rapist and child molester are
placed in the bottom of the prison hierarchy. Prison life for sex offender, especially pedophiles can
be hellish. Margot Bach, a spokeswoman for California Department of Corrections said "Taking [a
pedophile] out would gain [the killer] a lot more respect among the other inmates" (James, 2003).
The housing situation for sex offenders can be quite precarious. Inmate housing managers usually
consult caseworkers to make an arrangement for a sex offender to stay in a sex offender–only
housing unit for a purpose of treatment and education. One of the benefits of this living arrangement
is for inmate safety since sex offenders are often subjected to ridicule, physical altercation, and
sexual victimization. If the case is severe enough to be presented in the news media, a particular
inmate will be placed in a protective custody unit – so called "PC up" to avoid physical abuse or
even death.

Measuring Racial And Ethnic Inequality
Measuring racial and ethnic equality is not a simple or straightforward task. As Gary M. Klass
points out in the "Measuring Racial and Ethnic Inequality" chapter of his book Just Plain Data
Analysis:Finding, Presenting, and Interpreting Social Science Data, "Numbers never speak for
themselves." Klass's purpose for this chapter is to demonstrate the range of data that is derived from
social indicators and that can be used to analyze racial and ethnic disparities in different spheres
such as income and wealth, health, education, and criminal justice. After summarizing the content
covered in the chapter, Klass's methodology and findings can be discussed and evaluated. Klass
introduces the chapter by telling a brief anecdote about Bill Cosby and how he responded to
criticism he received regarding a speech he gave to commemorate the Brown v. Board of Education
case. In his speech, Cosby made a lot of claims about issues such as African Americans dropping out
of school in such high percentages and the incarceration rates of blacks resulting from a lack of
parenting or from inadequate parenting. Cosby's claim was that "numbers speak for themselves" on
issues such as teen pregnancies among blacks and the issues mentioned above, but Klass explains
that numbers alone never tell the full story. While the statistics Cosby used may have indicated
issues such as high rates of dropping out of school and of teen pregnancies among blacks, the

The Importance Of Oral Health, It Is Still Neglected By...
Although people are aware of the importance of oral health, it is still neglected by most individuals.
According to Vanderbilt, Tlsringhausen, and Bonwell (2013), improper oral health not only increase
the chances of being diagnosed with diabetes, it leads to other health complications such as
premature birth, and negative birth outcomes (para.1). Since low–income adults cannot afford to get
regular dental check–ups, they are more likely to have these diseases and health complications.
Vanderbilt, Tlsringhausen, and Bonwell (2013), also state in their article that "more than 47 million
people in United States are currently living in places where it is difficult to access dental care"
(para.1). These people do not have access to dental care ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The program will help the company give back to its community and gain a good reputation.
Low Income Floridians with Poor Oral Health
Oral health is very important and in Florida, this is becoming a big issue because many people
cannot afford to have regular dental checkups. According to Ghenshan (2012), in Florida, more than
115 thousand visits were made to the Emergency Room in 2010, which were related to dental
problems (p.3). This means individuals are having a difficult time paying for everyday expenses and
as a result, they are not going to have money to be able to pay for a dental visit. People going to the
emergency room for dental care means that they are not getting regular dental check–ups or
participating in any preventative dental care (stopping the problem before it actually happens).
According to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) (2015), Florida is a poor
state that shows a rank of 36th in the rich states and has approximately 17 percent of its population
living in poverty (Poverty Map). This is a high rate of number of people who do not have the money
to access dental services. According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2014), about 30 percent of the
population lives in poverty in Miami and about 40 percent of individuals, under the age of 65, do not
have any health insurance (QuickFacts Beta). If individuals do not have health insurance and dental
insurance it leads to lower check–ups and increases the chances of being diagnosed with

The Affordable Health Care Act
On March 23, 2010, after Congress passed the Affordable Care Act and was then signed into law by
President Barack Obama. The law was passed that the number of Americans covered by health
insurance would increase. In return, the cost of health care will decrease. What is the Affordable
Health Care Act?
According to the Health Insurance Organization(2015, pg.1) The Affordable Health Care Act, also
known as, The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) –is the landmark health reform
legislation that includes a long list of health–related provisions that began taking effect in 2010 and
will "continue to be rolled out over the next four years." Key provisions are intended to extend
coverage to millions of uninsured Americans, to implement measures that will lower health care
costs and improve system efficiency, and to eliminate industry practices that include rescission and
denial of coverage due to pre–existing conditions. This analysis is a question review of some of the
many benefits of this Act that are as follows:
What is health insurance coverage?
Who can benefit from Affordable Care Act?
What are the necessary qualifications to receive Obama Care?
Taking advantage of the benefits of the Affordable Care Act, will allow millions of Americans to
receive affordable health care; they will be able to live longer, healthier lives because insurance will
be less costly, and provided to them with more efficiency.

Do You Have Children?
Do you have children? If not, do you plan on having children in the future? Voluntary childless
marriages have become a growing trend ever since the end of 1964s and have become even bigger at
the start of 2006. According to the U.S. Census Bureau 's Current Population Survey, in 2014 about
47.6 percent of women between the age 15 and 44 had never had children. One might ask what's the
primary cause of childless couples.Childless couples are caused because of young couples seeking
higher levels of educations and positions, the need to become financially stable and have become
more self–centered over the years.
Couples between the ages of 20–40 will be more likely to put off having children until they have
completed their education ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It also gives employers second thought of giving women a higher promotion since they might not be
available when the employer need or they might have to change some policy and quotas to adapt to
the women schedule ."There has been a profound disconnect between the speed at which women
have been asked to take full–time roles in the workplace and the rate at which we've adapted laws
and social programs to support this drastic change in the lives of women," Plan. Employers
nowadays expect their employees to people productive and efficient if employers have to use
resources or change productive level due to one person it might be cheaper if the employer lets go
the employee.
It's quite common for most couples in first world countries to delay having children until they 're
able to sustain themselves and their child financially. Children average cost expense yearly range
from $10,000–$20,000 yearly. The fees sometimes make couple rethink about having a
child.According to moneysense, the average cost of raising a child to the age of 18 is about
$243,660.It cost $12,825 per child per year or $1,070 per month this is not factoring university and
other expenses.Having a child has many financial issues like child care, necessary expenses, and
ongoing expenses.Statistics Canada show on average the number of people pays for child care is
$4,000–$7,000 until the age of 11.

Scottsdale is 184.2 square miles located in the picturesque Sonoran Desert nestled just east of Phoenix, north of the Salt River Pima Indian Community, and west of the McDowell Mountains. Scottsdale pioneered wastewater reuse and water banking which recycles water within the community thus decreasing the need to import water. The community aims to conserve its natural water resources, preserve its meaningful open space, and enhance the character areas that make Scottsdale such a desirable place to live (City of Scottsdale, 2013). Rated number ten as one of America's most playful cities, Scottsdale values resources like hiking trails and museums while boasting weather for walkability and healthy lifestyle choices (Sperling's Best Places, 2013), yet some of the community functional health pattern results reveal certain unhealthy trends. Scottsdale ranks in the top ten in caffeine consumption in the nation (Prince Market Research, 2008), although low in nicotine consumption (30 Cities with Smoking Problems, 2013), alcohol (Ewalt & Vander Broek, 2008), and drugs (Vardi, 2009). Despite the extensive outdoor recreational areas, a high percentage of time is spent on sedentary leisure activities such as television viewing with 33.3% of adolescents watching television three or more hours a day. And, only 25.7% participate in physical activities that last sixty minutes in a one–week time period (CDC–Arizona, 2010). Community Immersion Analysis On Community Introduction The definition of Community, Netting, Kettner, McMurty and Thomas (2012) stated by Warren (1978) "Community is the combination of social units and systems that perform the major social functions relevant to meeting people's needs on a local level."(p.133). Understanding communities is important to social workers as they have, Netting et al (2012) "to know individuals functions within larger systems, understanding of its history and that communities constantly change" (p. 168). A community has many parts that make it work together; when one part is not working well, it affects the entire system. Social Workers are able to analyze, interpret data and work with community groups and leaders to find solutions to improve the workings of that community to its full potential. This community immersion analysis will focus on its community's social agencies, diversity and cultural richness. Systems Theory applies to this area as the macro system of this community's main downtown street is filled with stores, restaurants, cultural establishments where locals as well as tourist convene (Netting, 2012) "that carries out production as well as school and religious sites work to socialize community members." Sampling units that are projected to have a large effect on the precision of the estimates are selected "with certainty", meaning they are sure to be selected and will only represent themselves. Within each industry rank, the U.S. Census Bureau determines a cutoff, based on results from data of the 2007 Economic Census, that divides the certainty units from the noncertainty units. Accordingly, these values are on a 2007 basis. The year 2007 was the year leading up to the 2008 recession and housing market crash. Comparing our current retail sales data to that of 2007 is only going to make it appear as we have a thriving economy, which in reality, we don't. Americans love to quantify data. Because of this inherent need to compare data, economists have developed a way to collect nearly every type of statistics that may reveal the general health of the economy. These statistics actually tell if the economy is productive and efficient or if it is slow and inefficient. Included in these statistics are Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Consumer Price Index (CPI), Unemployment Rate, Retail Sales, Producer Price Index (PPI), and Personal Income. There have been many indicators that have been developed to measure inflation. The CPI measures inflation as experienced by consumers through their everyday expenses. The Producer Price Index (PPI) measures inflation during the early stages of business development, such as production and sales. CPI allows businesses to adjust prices based upon a comparison of the current cost of a defined set of goods and/or services to the cost of those same goods at a time in the past. It is also, "the best measure to use to translate retail sales and hourly earnings into real or inflation–free dollars" (2005). The CPI is the most widely used measure of inflation and is sometimes viewed as an indicator of the effectiveness of government economic policy. It provides information about price changes in the Nation's economy to government, business, labor, and private citizens and is used by them as a guide to making economic decisions. In addition, the President, Congress, and the Federal Reserve Board use trends in the CPI to aid in formulating fiscal and monetary policies. • 23. United States Census Bureau Population Projection According to the December 2012 United States Census Bureau Population Projection, the nation will continue its trend of consistent diversification. By 2024, the non–Hispanic white population will show a decrease in numbers. Minorities including Hispanics, African Americans and Asians will double, and other groups will increase by at least half. Eventually, non–Hispanic whites will not be seen as a majority, but as an equally represented group among its ethnic counterparts (U.S. Bureau, 2014). This projection can not be transposed to the country's nursing population. Non– Hispanic white nurses often vastly outnumber other groups (Bessent, 2009, p6). The nursing workforce needs to actively and continually diversify its professionals to provide competent care for the nation's ever–changing population. The first step to gaining an equally represented nursing workforce is to ensure all races receive an opportunity to advance their education and become registered nurses. Many cultural beliefs are obstacles for minorities. Families believe that a woman's place is just within the household or that college is not an option for their children (Wros, Doutrich, and Ruiz, 2009). Two important battles in the war, the Battle of Fredericksburg and the Second Battle of Fredericksburg, were fought there. In the original text of the act, two specific populations are addressed with different goals: reducing the rate of child abuse in children under the age of eighteen, and improving the treatment of children who had been maltreated or neglected (National Low Income Housing Coalition, 2014). Wright Mills coined the term "the sociological imagination," which is the importance of viewing the world as a whole and how everyone plays a part in it. To garner a further understanding of the abstract concept that is the "American Dream" I looked to the writings of early American novelists such as Thomas Wolfe and, the original coiner of said term, James Truslow Adams. In their writings, they had described the "American Dream" to be, in essence, the representation of the pursuit of a given individual to reach and attain their respective goal through hard work and determination (Library of Congress, 2017). For many, the American Dream consists of potentially attaining their respective dream career, settling down, owning a home, and starting a family that can thrive in that home. Unfortunately for many Americans, career aspiration do not always play out the way that we intend for them to. In the place of attainment of career goals some settle at buying their own home. Though much has changed since the term was first coined in the early 1930s, the American Dream continues to thrive today, no matter the trials nor tribulations. In this particular day and age, we consider the development of the American millennial generation and their pursuit of said dream. Rob Asghar wrote in his article "4 Ways Your Smartphone Is Making You Dumber" in Forbes magazine that, "Chronic under sleeping can lead to 15 points or more of IQ loss" (par 2). The ability to throw away up to fifteen IQ points is truly a first world privilege that is a huge contributor to the decline of intelligence in America: fortunately, this problem is easily fixed by placing mobile devices out of arms reach at night and self–imposing a healthy sleep schedule. Not all the contributing factors are as easily fixed as distancing one's self from distractions though, one of the issues causing average intelligence to decrease lies in the trends of low educated families increasing their numbers at a higher rate than ones with educated parents. The population of the United States in 1950 was just over 153 million people, compared to the current population of 323 million. In less than a century the Population of the U.S. has more than doubled. Understanding how averages work, a higher number of overall people will balance out the average and cause the outliers in both directions to essentially be covered up. This means that with a higher population, it takes a massive amount of either higher or lower IQs to change the average significantly. The fact that average IQ is decreasing means that most of the increased population since 1950 had a below average IQ. The Unites States ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

America seems to be trying to learn more about the ingredients of her melting pot. These efforts can be best understood by examining post–modernism. Post–modernism is especially important to breaking down stereotypes such as those that exist surrounding the black family. To understand post–modernism we must first understand modernism. The meta–narrative for the black family is defined by the Western standards: income and education and any other quantifiable unit. The history of the black family is difficult to research according to Barnetta McGhee White because there are few written documents to substantiate the oral history (Staples, 1991 p.50). In terms of the prevailing meta–narrative, familial ties must be documented by family trees. Black families, due to the breakdown of the family through the slave trade, rely on oral history to tell the story of their lineage (Staples, 1991, p 51). The genealogy of author Barnetta McGhee White helps illustrate certain points. The first is that since a majority of the research into genealogy is dependent on written documents dating into the founding years of this nation, these documents are only telling what the writer wants the reader to know. The history of black families is told through the story of the slaveholder and, thus, gives information relevant to the business of slavery–everything that measurable. Another point is that those in power in the past control the future. If current society is viewed in chronicled terms, there is little control blacks can have over the account of their family history because it will always be in terms of the dominant meta–narrative based on modernity. The conclusion to be made by the former points is that modern thought is to blame for stereotypes against blacks. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Nevada seems to be the only state that separates the exams into two separate years, but there is no evidence that this could negatively impact their state test scores. However, Nevada is not a high scoring state. In fact, the national assessment of education progress conducted by IES (Institute of Education Sciences), shows that all of the scores for Nevada are significantly lower than the national average (2011). The tests used to measure academic achievement (not the exit exam) is conducted in every state to produce information on how each state is performing individually. So, why is Nevada testing lower than most states? Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to this question, but it might be helpful to compare Nevada to a state that has seen more success. Wisconsin is among the nation's best performing states as long as test scores and graduation rates are considered. The state has higher test scores than the national averages according to IES (2011). Barrington, Illinois, my home town, is the picture of upper–middle class suburbia. It is a town with very little inequality, and very little diversity, but one which reveals some basic truths about inequality in America. One must first look at a snapshot of what Barrington socioeconomic structure is, then evaluate this structure through the theories of inequality. After these, and a quick evaluation of preconceived notions on Barrington's inequality versus the real data, and a comparison of Barrington's data to that of the United States as a whole, some conclusions can be drawn. These data reveal a strong correlation between Barrington's lack of economic inequality, and lack of demographic and social diversity. Barrington, Illinois is what many would consider to be a very economically homogeneous city, a vital characteristic in examining its inequality (or lack thereof). It is one of the generally more wealthy cities in the State of Illinois, with a median household income of $106,127, and a relatively low poverty rate at only nine point two percent (U.S. Census Bureau 2014b). Klass's purpose for this chapter is to demonstrate the range of data that is derived from social indicators and that can be used to analyze racial and ethnic disparities in different spheres such as income and wealth, health, education, and criminal justice. After summarizing the content covered in the chapter, Klass's methodology and findings can be discussed and evaluated. Klass introduces the chapter by telling a brief anecdote about Bill Cosby and how he responded to criticism he received regarding a speech he gave to commemorate the Brown v. Board of Education case. In his speech, Cosby made a lot of claims about issues such as African Americans dropping out of school in such high percentages and the incarceration rates of blacks resulting from a lack of parenting or from inadequate parenting. Cosby's claim was that "numbers speak for themselves" on issues such as teen pregnancies among blacks and the issues mentioned above, but Klass explains that numbers alone never tell the full story.
