Tech moves through these five phases
Hype Cycle
A potential technology
breakthrough kicks
things off. Early proof-
of-concept stories and
media interest trigger
significant publicity.
Often no usable
products exist and
commercial viability is
unproven.
Innovation
Trigger
Peak of
Inflated
Expectations
Early publicity
produces a number of
success stories — often
accompanied by scores
of failures. Some
companies take action;
many do not.
Trough of
Disillusionment
Interest wanes as
experiments and
implementations fail to
deliver. Producers of
the technology shake
out or fail. Investments
continue only if the
surviving providers
improve their products
to the satisfaction of
early adopters.
Slope of
Enlightenment
More instances of how
the technology can
benefit start to
become more widely
understood. Next
generation products
appear. More
enterprises fund pilots;
conservative
companies remain
cautious.
Plateau of
Productivity
Mainstream adoption
starts to take off.
Criteria for assessing
provider viability are
more clearly defined.
The technology's
broad market
applicability and
relevance are clearly
paying off.

As we improve the way sensors read and obtain data, autonomous
robotics like delivery cargo drones will become more of a reality.
This will also lead to more advance technologies within the IoT
framework, collecting more data than ever
Better Sensors = Better Automation and Robotics
Emerging Technology Trends
Sensing and Mobility
The AR Cloud is a real-time 3D (or spatial) map of the world,
overlayed onto the real world. It enables information and
experiences to be augmented, shared, and tied to specific physical
locations to occur and persist across apps and devices
9. Autonomous Driving
Autonomous driving Level 4 describes vehicles that can operate without human interaction in most, but not all, conditions and locations and will likely operate in geofenced areas.
Autonomous driving Level 5 labels vehicles operating autonomously in all situations and conditions, and controlling all tasks.
10. Waymo transported 6,299 passengers in
self-driving Chrysler Pacifica minivans in its
first month participating in a robotaxi pilot
program in California, according to
a quarterly report the company filed with
the California Public Utilities Commission.

With improved reliability of biochips and emotion AI are being
developed to improve the human body. For example, prosthetics that
improve strength to “super-human” strength or robotic skin that is
sensitive to the touch.
The intent is to provide a more more seamless experience that
improves the health, intelligence and strength of humans
Better Sensors and Better Intelligence
Emerging Technology Trends
Augmented Humans
Human augmentation conjures up visions of
futuristic cyborgs, but humans have been
augmenting parts of the body for hundreds of
years. Glasses, hearing aids and prosthetics
evolved into cochlear implants and wearables.
12. Biochips
Biochips are being actively used today to detect diseases such as cancer, small pox, dementia before the patient develops systems. Coupled with AI, response time improves and less margin
of error.
13. Biotech / Printable Organs
Biotech is artificially grown muscles. While still being developed, this could be used to provide skin and tissue to grow over a robot…allowing it to have more sensory perceptions such as
sensitivity to pressure.

With new satellites (Low-Earth-Orbit or LEO) will provide voice and data
to more areas, expanding people’s availability to connect to the rest of
the world with improved speeds and performance
Better Infrastructure (network and processing power)
Emerging Technology Trends
Postclassical compute and comms
“Classical or binary computing, which uses binary
bits, evolved by making changes to existing,
traditional architectures. These changes resulted in
faster CPUs, denser memory and increasing
throughput. ”
15. Using a new time-based method to control light
from an ultra-fast laser, researchers have
developed a nanoscale 3D printing technique
that can fabricate tiny structures a thousand
times faster than conventional two-photon
lithography (TPL) techniques, without sacrificing
resolution. Oct 7, 2019

Digital ecosystems are web-like connections between actors
(enterprises, people and things) sharing a digital platform
Better Connected to Tech with Ownership of Data
Emerging Technology Trends
Digital Ecosystems
20. Digital Twin
A Virtual Twin or Digital Twin is a virtual representation of an actual physical object.

What are we seeing today?
Bringing This Together
We are seeing many of these emerging technology being integrated into our lives.
22. Facial Recognition as Security
With better computing vision power, we have the
ability to monitor 24/7 without having security
personnel physically looking at cameras for a
“person”. Additionally, computer vision is
allowing for improved payment gateways

• We’ve been using AR/VR for a while now

Human Augmentation Today
• augment the brain to increase memory storage,
• implant a chip to decode neural patterns
• exoskeletons became a standard uniform for
autoworkers, enabling them to lift superhuman
weights
• doctors can implant sensors to track how drugs
travel inside a body

Blockchain
Blockchain is essentially a digital ledger
used to record transactions but secured
due to its encrypted and decentralized
nature.
Facebook's own blockchain-based crypto
currently Libra is creating quite a stir.

Multiexperiences
Multiexperience replaces technology-literate
people with people-literate technology. In
this trend, the traditional idea of a computer
evolves from a single point of interaction to
include multisensory and multitouchpoint
interfaces like wearables and advanced
computer sensors

Internet of Things and Edge Computing
By 2023, there could be more than 20 times as many smart devices at the edge of
the network as in conventional IT roles.
As the quantity of data we’re dealing with continues to
increase, we’ve realized the shortcomings of cloud computing
in some situations. Edge computing is designed to help solve
some of those problems as a way to bypass the latency
caused by cloud computing and getting data to a datacenter
for processing. It can exist “on the edge,” if you will, closer to
where computing needs to happen.

More AI
Five out of six Americans use AI services in one form or
another every day:
navigation apps,
smartphone personal assistants
home personal assistants
smart home devices.
Businesses are using AI to assess business risk and
understand data, predict maintenance, and improve
energy efficiency, among many other money-saving
tasks
Experts say automation will eliminate 73 million more
jobs by 2030, but jobs in AI will number 23 million by
2020.

34
And How We Use It
Other Forms of AI
Optical Character Recognition
Think of how a picture of your license plate allows
a machine to translate that to text and run a query
to determine who violated a toll.
Also see this in scanners that can take an image
and convert this to text.
Consider how you can take a photo of another
language and have it translate to yours
Advance User Preferences
This is the concept of an AI providing solutions
based on historic user’s preferences and
comparing it to similar users.
Compare how Amazon or Netflix makes
recommendations based on your purchases or
views – or even how Amazon guesses when you
might run out of a specific product.
Sensory Data Analysis
Your wearables that detect heart rate for instance
can determine without user intervention if you
are working out and even what kind of work out
such as jogging or bicycling.
