This document summarizes a presentation about how blockchain and artificial intelligence technologies are currently being used to create social impact. The presentation discusses what blockchain and AI are, provides examples of how each technology is being applied by non-profits, and offers advice on getting started with and obtaining funding for technological initiatives. The key topics covered include how blockchain establishes trust without intermediaries, how AI relies on data to perform tasks, and specific tools and resources available for non-profits to learn about and implement blockchain and AI technologies.

Why all the sudden global interest in blockchain and AI?
• Blockchain and AI have made big strides into our daily lives.
• Whether we recognize them by name or not, systems are already
being used that involve blockchain and AI, even behind the scenes.
• And, the rate of creation for new ways to use blockchain and AI is
escalating rapidly, especially in the impact space.

What is blockchain? The internet of value + trust
The internet we
have today is the
internet of
information.
It’s about being able to
give or receive any
information you want to
create, find, or send to
someone, and easily
sharing or receiving that
information instantly.
That’s today’s internet.
Blockchain – the
next internet - is
the internet of
value.
It’s about anything you
want to give or receive
that can only have one
owner at one time
(money, identity,
intellectual/artistic
rights, land or property
titles and deeds, degrees
or certifications), and
easily exchanging value,
rights, or authentication
related to those things
instantly.
Blockchain is a
permanent
(immutable), time-
stamped record
(database, or
ledger) of who
owns what at any
given time.
It is agreed to and able
to be seen by everyone
participating. It cannot
be changed or tampered
with, due to the
computer code behind
blockchain technology.
The code is what creates
the trust.
8. 8
What Is blockchain? A short summary
• No one entity owns a public blockchain. It is a shared, peer-
to-peer network.
• Everyone using it agrees that the credibility and trust is
created within the blockchain technology itself.
• Therefore, it eliminates the need for third-party services to
establish trust (example: banks).
• Parties can quickly and confidently exchange money, goods,
services, or authentication of identity or credentials, without
third-party intermediaries.

What Is AI (Artificial Intelligence)? Think DATA
Data is really critical for
AI, so now is a great
time to start capturing
more data and and
validating the accuracy
of your data as a
nonprofit.
It’s possible to use data
from existing data
sources in projects as
well - but be mindful of
bias risks in any data set.
Ask a diverse and
inclusive set of people
for input throughout any
process related to AI.
There is already a lot of
bias built into AI
because a homogeneous
set of humans are
providing a
homogeneous set of
initial training data for
many AI programs.
There’s still time to
fix/change this, but be
cautious about
accidentally not
including people
because AI is blind to
them or has inaccurate
or biased information.
Consider both the input
and the output for
projects.
Definition of artificial
intelligence
1: a branch of
computer science
dealing with the
simulation of intelligent
behavior in computers
2: the capability of a
machine to imitate
intelligent human
behavior

What Can AI Do?
The main aim of any
technology – including
AI – is to learn more
and/or to help do
something:
• Better
• Faster
• Easier
• Or that couldn’t be
done before.

Can emerging tech help achieve your goals?
Blockchain and AI will impact,
and are already impacting,
many types of systems and organizations.
First, ask: what goal are you trying to achieve?
Some tech impact will be more immediate,
and some more in the future.
Even now there are many current uses that are exciting
for nonprofits and social enterprise that we can look to
for ideas for our own organizations.
Being mindful of equity, inclusion,
and preventing human/implicit bias is critical
in any discussion, launch, or implementation of technology.
Diverse viewpoints and life experiences create better
products, solutions, and outcomes.

5 tips to get funding when tech is a good fit for your goals
Make tech part of your strategic plan
Think mission & programs, not technology
Collaborate for joint grant proposals that benefit similar missions
Talk to tech funders about capacity building and technical assistance grants
Spend less on tech with donations, refurbished items, or nonprofit discounts
