Writing a Sentence
A sentence is a group of words that has
   Order and makes sense

   A capital letter at the beginning

   Punctuation at the end

   A complete thought or idea

   A subject and a predicate
Order and makes sense

   The a man woman married. This is not a sentence.

   A man married a woman. This is a sentence.

   The woman married a man. This is also a sentence.
A capital at the beginning
   We walked to work.

   Brenda drinks coffee every morning.

   I exercise as often as I can.

   The wind blew down my tree yesterday.

   A sentence always begins with a capital letter.
Punctuation
   Every sentence ends with punctuation.

   There are only three types of punctuation that can end a sentence. You can
    use one of the following

   a period .

   a question mark ?

   an exclamation mark !
A Complete thought

   A baby cried.         a complete thought

   Is fixing the roof.   incomplete thought   Who is fixing the roof?

   The waiter.           incomplete thought   What about the waiter?

   At the store.         Incomplete thought   What happened?
Subject and Predicate
   The subject tells you who or what the sentence is about.
       There is always a noun.
       A noun is a person, place or thing.

   The predicate tells you about the subject.
       It will always include a verb.
       A verb is an action word.
Find the Subject

   They are my friends.

   Apples and peaches grow in the Okanagan Valley.

   Many people who love to ski visit Whistler Mountain every year.
Subject

   They are my friends.

   Apples and peaches grow in the Okanagan Valley.

   Many people who love to ski visit Whistler Mountain every year.
Find the Predicate

   They are my friends.

   Apples and peaches grow in the Okanagan Valley.

   Many people who love to ski visit Whistler Mountain every year.
Predicate

   They are my friends.

   Apples and peaches grow in the Okanagan Valley.

   Many people who love to ski visit Whistler Mountain every year.
Let’s try another one.


   The audience dropped candy wrappers all over the floor.


       To find the subject, ask yourself, who did the action?


       To find the predicate, find the verb.

   Subject
