Pitch
What is your chosen brief? Include information about the audience age and institution?
My chosen brief is Brief 2: Magazines. Create a front cover, contents page and double
spread feature article for a new specialist magazine in a genre of your choice. You should
create a product for an independent publisher targeting an audience of 18-34 year olds.
Length:4 pages
What is your chosen genre?
My chosen genre will be a Fashion and Beauty Magazine
Who will be your institution and why?
My institution which I will be using is TCO London because TCO London has an audience
which suits my magazine better. I believe there is also an opening in their market for my
genre in their publishing company which would ensure their full attention on my magazine.
What existing products inspire you and why?
An existing product which inspires me are the magazines Cosmopolitan and Vogue.
Cosmopolitan has a target audience of 18-34 and the average reader f vogue is 34 years old.
These two magazines inspire me as their focus is not completely on clothing, these
magazines include powerful and personal stories as well as guides and how to’s. Therefore,
this appeals to their target audience.
How will you appeal to your audience?
I will appeal to my audience by using a minimalistic look with small fonts which will maintain
their attention and I will also include how to steps with a prize draw. The other articles,
shown on the cover page, will appeal to my target audience as it would include stories to
suit work and relationships. The double page feature would feature a new beauty regime
which would include specialist products appealing this age group as this audience target
belong to the Millennial generation (born approximately 1982 and after until round 2004)
who have been found to be the highest buyers of skin care.
What will be the content of your magazine? (No existing brands to be used)
The contents of my magazines will be a double spread feature on a up and coming makeup
brand which features a range of colours from neutral to very dark and include healthy
ingredients for your skin. The other articles which will be advertised on the cover page
would include stories like how to dress for work, juggling work, life and love and even
articles on where to buy the best bargains and save money.
What will be colour scheme?
My colour scheme would be a minimalistic and dark scheme with gradual tones and bright
colours highlighting important writing.
What fonts might you use?
My fonts I will use will be very basic fonts so the attention won’t be taken away from the
main feature images and the articles. I will be using Nova as it is a bold font yet not too
fancy for the masthead, the main article title on the front cover, the contents, keeping the
attention on the issue. The mail article and the heading will be Nova to draw the attention
yet the other subheadings will be a less bold font. The font for the other articles featured on
the front cover and also the font used on the double page spread and contents page will be
The Brooklyn.

The front I will use for the minor details like the date, issue number and tagline will be Geo
Sans Light.
Create a layout for your products (its ok to change this)

The media language which I am planning on using could be linked to Hall’s encode and
decode theory as the colours and poses in which I am including will have encoded messages
regarding the feel of the magazine and the messages in which I am attempting to portray.
The Semantic codes which will be present in my product will be regarding the colours and
fonts I will use. The colours which I will use will be quite dark and minimal with red
highlighting the important aspects which draws attention to the main features and the
effect which I would like to create which is quite seductive. The images and facial features of
the model will also contribute to the seductive and inviting feel to the magazine.
Plan for construction of representations
The plan for my product will support yet also refute the stereotypes present. The
stereotypes of women being seductive and seen through the male gaze, as suggested by
Mulvey, will be supported yet not in the sexist way that Mulvey suggest women are viewed
by the male gaze. My model will be very sexy and seductive but for the purpose of uplifting
other women and supporting them through sexy looks rather than degrading them through
sexy poses. The stereotype of fashion magazines being solely focused on fashion and
shallow problems will be broken with my magazine as the other articles will whilst being
focused on fashion and beauty will also relate to the workplace for women and the
empowerment of other women. The way in which my magazine looks is purposely set up to
attract the readers with the colour scheme and placement of the text will draw attention to
the writing with the placement of the images therefore showing the articles to be more
influential than the images.
Plan for how the media production will reflect the industry context
The genre of my magazine will be clearly presented in the model, her costume and the
other articles on the front cover and content page. The genre will be portrayed by the
models poses clearly showing her costume off and her makeup will not be subtle but a main
focus which should portray the genre clearly. The model in my magazine will be positioned
in various fashion poses which will also demonstrate my chosen genre. The story lines which
I have chosen will revolve around fashion in the workplace, fitting fashion into life and other
story lines which will include fashion yet other aspects of life.
Plan for how the media production will appeal to and engage the target audience
My media production will appeal to the target audience through the font sizing and the
colours used. The font size will sui to the audience’s attention span, the images will appeal
to the audience as the model will be what they aspire to be therefore they’ll be willing to
buy this issue to attempt to achieve the same status. My production will engage with the
audience as it will appeal to their interests and the plug’s prize will also appeal to them as it
will be a prize in which they would be interested in. The general design of the magazine will
be quite simple and sophisticated which will also appeal to the audience as a bright and in
your face magazine may repel my target audience.
Consider your photography:
What model/s will you use?
I am hoping that one of my best friends will be my model for me
What will they wear for each photo? – there should be costume changes.
5. Jess Thompson
I am planning on having their outfits be very sexy with a main colour scheme of black. The
outfits ranging from sexy to fun to portray the makeup brand. I am planning of three
costume changes.
What will be their facial expression, pose, body language?
I am planning on a range of poses and looks. The front cover will have a very seductive pose
and body language with direct mode of address looking into the camera. The contents page
will have two images on of my model, one being a quite reserved and sexy pose, the other
being energetic and have a fun pose. The double spread will have flirty body language.
What will their hair and make-up look like?
Her makeup will be very bold. Her eye makeup will be the focus of her look with a mix of
dark and bright colours lining her eyes. Her hair could be loosely curled.
Where will you take your photos?
I am planning on taking my photos in a studio with a plain white background to ensure that
on the front cover, the image and main feature is center of attention.
Do you have any inspirational photos, products?
My inspirational product is Cosmopolitan, whilst the target audience Is 18-24 so whilst the
target audience is 10 years short of my target audience, it includes articles to do with real
life issues regarding life and work and relationships. It isn’t just a fashion magazine which is
inspirational to me as whilst fashion is the main feature is has many views and angles to it.
Some inspirational products could be Urban Decay, a makeup brand with unique colours
and against animal testing making it vegan friendly which appeals to a larger target
audience than other brands.
Record all of your details, and getting consent for
your model and permission to use your location.
