This document provides an overview of an industrial EtherCAT slave I/O module with 16-channel digital input/output. It describes the product positioning and benefits, including EtherCAT compliance, industrial-grade components, easy installation, and LED indicators. The document outlines the product features such as the 9-48V DC power input, -40-75°C operating temperature range, 2 RJ45 ports, 16 I/O channels, and 3750Vrms isolation. Applications and a comparison with competing products are also presented.

About EtherCAT
Industrial Ethernet main communication protocol types:
EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, Ethernet PowerLink, Profinet, Modbus TCP/IP, SynqNet,
CAN, and SerCos
EtherCAT (Ethernet for Control Automation Technology) was proposed by Beckhoff in
Germany in 2003 based on the Ethernet bus concept (Fieldbus System).
1. Cost reduction: A network interface card commonly found on the market can be
used in the master unit for Ethernet network connection; there’s no need to
purchase an additional hardware equipment for that purpose. The Cat 5e twisted-
pair cable can be used for transmission.
2. Fast communication transmission: If the full-duplex mode is adopted, the
transmission speed is 100Mbps, while 256 digital I/O signals can be processed in
11μs, and 1000 digital I/O signals can be processed in 30μs.
3. Excellent synchronization performance: Using distributed clocks can synchronize
multi-axes with less than 1μs of jitter.
4. Flexible topology: Any topology can be used, including line type, tree type, star
type, etc.
5. Improved security: The ring topology offers the reliability of networks.

ESI File (EtherCAT Slave Information file)
XML format
ESI File is used for Slave module identification for EtherCAT master
unit. The ESI file is important for integration when the system adopts
master unit of company A, and slave module of company B
The ESI file tells the controller how to initialize the device like what the
functions are, how to use it, etc. On the other hand, the ENI file is
mainly to record which slaves are currently available, and how to set
these slaves.

Distributed Clock (DC) Synchronization
The master sends a broadcast message that reads and writes the
system clock, making the clock of the first slave a reference clock, and
the internal clock of the other slaves is adjusted to be the same as the
first slave.
Each EtherCAT slave maintain a hardware clock and the minimum time
interval is 1 nanosecond. It is normally called Local System Time.
Through the EtherCAT DC technology, it can ensure that the local
system time error on all slave devices is within +/- 20 nanoseconds.
The system clock is a 64-bit timer. The count is the time elapsed since
0:00 on January 1, 2000 in nanoseconds.
