1. THE HISTORY OF MIDDLE
ENGLISH

2.  The Middle English begins with the key event Norman Conquest of
England.
 The conqueror, William Duke, invades England bringing new
concepts and adding French words to English language.
 French was compulsory for official business.
 Latin was still used in church but common man spoke English to be
able to communicate only by speaking more slowly or loudly and
to be understood.

3.  Norman Conquest (1066) brought many linguistic changes.
 French is the official language in England, affected English
vocabulary and speaking.
 The grammar of English was radically transformed.
 Educated people needed to be trilingual in French, Latin and
English.
 It was flourishing period for English Literature.
 Geoffrey Chaucer was an important writer in this period.

4.  The English nation invaded armies, navies, soldiers and began the
Hundred Year War against France.
 It lasted 116 years.
 No one gave importance to French.
 As a result, English became dominant language in England.
