Modern Take on Classical
1.
2. Mode of address
The mode of address I used was slightly informal in order to relate to my
target audience. Such as “pretty darn cool” and reference to such things as
the Leeds music festival within my double paged spread.
On my front cover I used language in my banner such as “bringing the
class to classic,” this suggested that my magazine was a stylish and modern
take on the classical genre. I also used words such as „exclusive‟ to make
my audience feel as though magazine is the only one to provide new and
up to date information in relation to my genre. This links to the uses and
gratifications theory of audiences using media texts for surveillance.
3. The images I used were vital for attracting
my audience. I chose to use images of older
teenage musicians renowned in the world of
classical music. This would create audience
identification and attract them to the
magazine. With my images I had to combine
the genre with the message I wished to
convey. The message being that classical
music is relevant to younger people not just
the stereotypical older listener.
4. I chose to use the conventional colour scheme of red
white and black. This would make my magazine
visually appealing and stick to the colour scheme
which established music magazines already use.
Consequently it is a tried and tested formula and
therefore no need for me to change or experiment.
I also used a logo as part of my masthead so as to make
the magazine identifiable to the target audience and to
make it stand out on the shelves.
5. Masthead: I chose the name „Classix for my masthead.‟ I chose this to match the genre
of my magazine, classical music, yet because my magazine is aimed at a younger
audience I changed classics to classix so as to relate to my target audience and add a
rebellious feel. Furthermore, the logo I utilized adds to the brand of the magazine and
makes it instantly recognisable, it also adds to the covers visual appearance and
catches the eye of the target audience.
Colour scheme: The colours I used are fairly conventional, the white background
allows the text and image to stand out whereas the red and black writing merges well
with the background to add to the visual appearance. These colours are used mostly
on magazine covers and therefore with this aspect i decided to match other
magazines. With help from adobe cooler I also decided which colours contrasted and
matched the best.
Font styles: I used an array of fonts on my front cover, with each convention sporting
a separate font. The mast head font maintains the classic feel yet still looks visually
eye catching and appealing. This is similar with the banner, I used a standard serif
font for the first half whereas the italics for the second half, „to classic,‟ again
maintains the classic feel. The font I employed for my main cover line and ticker was
more of an informal san serif font which was deployed din order to attract the target
audience and provides the magazine with a younger feel.
Front cover image: My image is of a young classic music artist, I did this so as to
attract the younger section of the audience as well as maintain the classical music
genre. My model sustains eye contact with the camera and positions his body on a
slant, I did this to entice the readers and make him appear more attractive.
Key cover line: My key cover line is made very large to catch the eye of the audience
and to exclaim what the main story consists of.
Banner: The banner on my magazine front cover matches the ethos of my magazine.
The connotations which are portrayed give my magazine a classy feel and says that
my magazine is of high quality. It also explains the genre and aim of the magazine.
Menu strip: My menu strip is tucked away in he bottom left corner of the magazine
front cover so as to make space for the rest of the page ,
