• E-commerce (electronic
commerce or EC) is the
buying and selling of goods
and services, or the
transmitting of funds or
data, over an electronic
network, primarily the
internet.

6. Electronic Funds Transfer
• it is a system of
transferring money
from one bank account
directly to another
without any paper
money changing hands.
EXAMPLE
• when you use
your debit card to make a
purchase at a store or
online, the transaction is
processed using an EFT
system. The transaction is
very similar to an ATM
withdrawal, with near-
instantaneous payment to
the merchant
and deduction from your
checking account.

7. What is Electronic Data Interchange
(EDI)?
• It is the electronic interchange of business
information using a standardized format; a
process which allows one company to send
information to another company electronically
rather than with paper. Business entities
conducting business electronically are called
trading partners.

• Most companies create invoices using a computer
system, print a paper copy of the invoice and mail
it to the customer. Upon receipt, the customer
frequently marks up the invoice and enters it into
its own computer system. The entire process is
nothing more than the transfer of information
from the seller's computer to the customer's
computer. EDI makes it possible to minimize or
even eliminate the manual steps involved in this
transfer.

11. HISTORY OF E-COMMERCE
Development of EC applications started in the
early 1970s with electronic funds transfer
(EFT), which refers to the computer-based
systems used to perform financial transactions
electronically. However, the use of these
applications was limited to financial institutes,
large corporations, and some daring
businesses.

• Electronic data interchange (EDI) was then
developed in the late 1970s to improve the
limitation of EFT. EDI enlarged the pool of
participating company from manufacturers,
retailers, services, and others. Such systems
were called Inter organizational System (IOS).

flow of information to be automated between
organizations to reach a desired supply-chain
management system, which enables the
development of competitive organizations.
• From the 1990s onwards, electronic
commerce would additionally include
enterprise resource planning systems (ERP),
data mining and data warehousing.
