Coors As A Successful Commodity
The brewing industry has traditionally been a successful commodity. In the year 1985, the brewing
industry's consumption and sales ceased increasing and became frame. During this time, Coors
emerged as one of the most successful brewing industries in the country, raising their sales by 13
percent. Throughout this course, I have learned that a company will be able to maintain success if
they are able to receive more earnings on capital than their expenses. Throughout the first 100 years
or so, Coors was an extremely successful brewing company. How did Coors become so successful
so quickly? Coors, in their early years, began selling only to a select few western states. Coors was
very effective during the time when they were selling to these states. Their centralized location
allowed them to easily ship to these states and low prices helped establish them early on as an
effective brewer. Over time, however, Coors began to stabilize and lag behind competition. Being
the most successful brewing company for such a long time may have hurt Coors in the long–run. As
competing major breweries began implanting new strategies and tactics, and Coors would stick to
what they had been doing all along. Coors needs to realize that in order to stay competitive in an

The Coors brewing industry had many ups and downs throughout its history dating back to its start
in 1873 (Adolf Coors in the Brewing Industry). There were times of great growth and expansion that
would get interrupted by numerous setbacks. Some were small and some led to extreme changes. It
sounds similar to any type of business. However, the different generations of the Coors family
seemed to find ways to usually compete with their competitors and maintain the success of the
company. It was also very challenging. Different changes had to be made for each new obstacle that

efficiency. Environmental factors People are getting more and more aware of the environment and it

pubs and restaurants. Moreover, a few years ago it was allowed to have a blood alcohol level of 0.8

advantage of the growing popularity of the niche, yet suffered an untimely end. Craft breweries can,

Another way they reduced some of their cost was by not pasteurizing their beer (Adolf Coors in the
Brewing Industry). It did have to be refrigerated so the use of energy was the alternative. It did not
save much money, but Coors was finding different ways to reduce costs and ultimately be more
profitable than its competitors, especially in the west region of the United States. It had a huge plant
that was continuing to use most of the beer that was being produced. Coors was in control until

Coors Case Study This is an analysis of Adolph Coors in the Brewing Industry. Adolph Coors
opened operations in 1873 in Golden, Colorado. After surviving through the prohibition, Coors
expanded and maintained a set geographic area, including 11 states in the western United States, to
operate in until 1975. During this time the company experienced an impressive steady increase in
sells year to year, increasing from 90,000 barrels up to 12.3 million barrels in 1974.
Volume decreased for the first time in over twenty years in 1975 by four percent, during that same
time Coors started to push out further in an attempt to become a national brand. 1985 marked a
major year for the company as it set records in volume sold and revenues from the brewing division.
Between 1975 and 1985 there were major changes in the company that eventually led to the
company possibly opening its second brewing facility in history in Virginia. Through these years
there were many new strategies implemented to foster this growth. In this paper I will diagnose key
decisions, analyze potential solutions and show the actions needed to achieve the suggested changes.
Although through the years leading up to 1974 there was increasing profit and volume every year,

This report will examine the external environment of the brewing industry using a PESTEL analysis
and the internal capabilities of ABInBev using a value chain analysis in order to determine how the
firm appears to compete. Following this, strategies for improving the competitive position of the
company will be outlined.
ABInBev is a multinational beverage and brewing company based in Belgium. It is the largest
brewer in the world with a 20.8% market share (Statista, 2016) and is also one of the world's top
five consumer goods companies.

The brewing industry is interesting to examine due to its relatively unique structure. Up until
November 2015, the market was dominated by four main players, known informally as the "Big
Four". AB InBev was the largest, followed by SABMiller, Heineken and Carlsberg. In November
2015, however, ABInBev and SABMiller agreed a formal $107 billion takeover deal, combining the
brewers into a company which industry experts claim would control around half of the industry's
profits (Mickle, 2015). As a result of the sheer size and complexity of the merger, it is anticipated
that the deal will not be finalised until the second half of 2016 as ABInBev must negotiate with anti–
trust regulators around the world with respect to their potential monopolistic position. As the deal is
