Machu Picchu is an Inca citadel set high in the Andes Mountains in Peru. It is located in Cuzco region, Urubamba Province. In 1983, UNESCO designated Machu Picchu a world heritage site due to it being part of the Historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. It is one of the New 7 Wonders of the Modern World and Peru's most popular tourist attraction, receiving over 1 million visitors annually, though access requires a dangerous climb and every year some visitors do not make it down safely. The site provides evidence of the advanced civilization and achievements of the Inca people.
