Easter Island is a remote island in the Pacific Ocean that belongs to Chile. It is home to around 900 large stone monuments called moais carved by the indigenous Rapa Nui people. In the summer of 2022, a fire destroyed around 400 of the moais. Today, about 100,000 tourists visit Easter Island annually to see the moais and engage in activities like scuba diving and hiking. The island has a population of around 7,000 people concentrated in the single town of Hanga Roa.
