Machu Picchu is the most visited tourist attraction in Peru, located 70km northwest of Cusco in the Andes mountains. It was constructed around 1450 at the height of the Inca Empire and abandoned less than 100 years later when the Spanish arrived. Hiram Bingham brought worldwide attention to the "lost city" of Machu Picchu in 1911 after it had been enshrouded by jungle for centuries. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage site and Peru's most visited tourist attraction, receiving over 3 million visitors in 2010.
