The Cultural Causes And Effects Of Gendercide
"Raising a daughter is like watering your neighbors' garden." That quote from a Hindu proverb.is referring to is how in some cultures when a
daughter is old enough to be married, she leaves that family and joins her husbands'. So, raising a daughter in those cultures is seen as helping
another family. Unlike females when a son is born he will stay and take care of the parents as they age. This son preference can lead to some
countries committing gendercide. The act of gendercide is the mass killing of people because of their sex. Gendercide is a horrid trend that is due to the
son preferences of many countries. Parents in Countries such as china and India have been killing there daughters. In India 25 percent of girls die
before they can reach puberty. Also, 200 million women are missing because of being killed at a young age. There are many cultural causes of
gendercide. The first is that boy babies are valued far more then female babies. Male children can carry on the family name, take care the parents
when they get old and are less "expensive" to raise. In India there is a dowry system where in order for a woman to be married, the bride's family
must give gifts of money, land, livestock or other expensive items. This can put I strain on poorer families who cannot afford to pay a dowry or
richer families who do not want to spend that type of money. So , when they have a girl child they either get an abortion or kill the child to save money.
There was a Indian mother that

Essay The Girl Who Wouldn't Sing by Kit Yuen Quan
The Girl Who Wouldn't Sing by Kit Yuen Quan In the memoir "The Girl Who Wouldn't Sing", Kit Yuen Quan describes her life experiences
growing up as a Chinese girl in America. In her attempt to try and find her place in society, Quan intermingles with several groups of people. Her
interactions with a feminist group, two young Cambodian girls, and finally her own father allow her to explore her Chinese background and how
that affects her interactions with people. In order to find her own "voice" in a society that is not really hers, Kit Yuen Quan explored relationships
with people of different lifestyles. She does so in order to be able to recognize how she wants to express herself, and through which culture, American or

The two girls, Yan and Eng, lived in a terrible neighborhood where there were "drunk men and prostitutes near corners", "the fragrant smell of piss and
jasmine rice wafting from windows", and "a medley of languages: Vietnamese, Chinese, Cambodian, English, Black English, Laotian"(Quan 216). Kit
went into the situation thinking that she would be able to connect to her culture through knowing a common language. Somewhat to her surprise, the
connection to her culture did not come through language, but through observing the experiences of childhood that these two girls were immersed in.
Kit states that "whether they were living in a refuge camp in the Philippines or in Thailand or in some one–room apartment on Eddy Street, they were
connected to each other through their language and their culture"(Quan 217). It was not so much Kit's own interaction with the girls that allowed her
to realize where should would find herself, but her observation of the girls and their interaction with their native language and society. Kit's experience
with Yan and Eng compelled her to learn more about her native culture, rather than solely try to fit into the American culture. Kit's attempt to conform
to the American standards and culture was precisely the mistake she had made with the feminists. Kit Yuen Quan's time spent with the Cambodian girls

Comparison Of Raymond's Run 'And All American Slurp'
In the stories, "Raymond's Run" and "All American Slurp," Squeaky and the Lin girl are great characters because they are both looking for the same
thing, friends. Both characters have a goal: the Lin girl wants to fit in with her peers, and Squeaky wants to be successful and a good athlete. The Lin
girl can not succeed in making friends because of how her family acts and how they are not used to the United States' culture and customs. Squeaky
doesn't have many friends because she's very competitive with other people. When you look further at these two girls, you see the true meaning of love
and kindness. Squeaky and the Lin girl have trouble making friends, but they have qualities that make them good people. Their challenge in life is that
they must overcome these obstacles to succeed in what they want. In "Raymond's Run," Squeaky is very protective of her brother. She says, "if anyone

The Lin's aren't familiar with the United States and people find them to be awkward or different. This family emigrated from China and when they
had their first dinner with Americans, they looked different for what and how they ate. One of the reasons the young Lin girl cannot make friends is
because of the negative impression she gives to others. Many feel uncomfortable by how she eats. Another reason it is difficult for her and her family
to feel welcome is that the family's behavior is odd and unusual in America. The four things that the Lin girl wants are, to learn the American customs,
how to be respectful to others, make plenty of friends, and learn the American language. First, the Lin family was uncomfortable at the Gleasons having
an American dinner and later, the Gleasons were uncomfortable having a Chinese dinner at the Lins. The Lins learned they need to be more tolerant of

The Yellow Wallpaper, And Desiree 's Baby
Not so long ago, there was a time that men 's dominance and superiority over women was the social norm. Men were the accepted authorities in any
relationship and held all the say. In the two stories, "The Yellow Wallpaper", and "Desiree 's Baby", the female protagonists are portrayed as weak
characters who are heavily dependent on their husbands for everything. Without the men in their lives, the women would be essentially helpless. But
the authors of these two stores were nothing like their characters. They were both strong–willed women who had a voice of their own and wanted to
make sure it was heard. Thus, both authors used these stories to give feminism a voice.
Feminism was a concept birthed and bred during the Progressive Era, and time when women's suffrage was at its peak. Women had gained the right to
own property, own businesses, and some women even began working outside the home. Both stories, "Desiree's Baby" and "The Yellow Wallpaper"
were written in the early 1890s, during this pinnacle time in women's right.
The authors of both stories wrote their stories, either accidentally or on purpose, with the undertones of feminism, hoping to expose the unequal
treatment and expectations of females to males. Both stories challenged the stereotypical roles of females, and in both, the females ended up being the
one in power of their own destinies and overcame the rule of their dominant male counterpart.
In "The Yellow Wallpaper" the narrator, Jane, is a wife and mother.

Society Lack of Tolerance in Body Image
Tolerance is the realization that there are other people in this world, and we may have our values and views on different topics but must respect
others' opinions and have an open mind. Our society is lacking tolerance in many ways but one way is how society expects women to be perfect and
live up to the media's expectations. Women attempt to dress and look like celebrities to stay "in–style". Women also may mimic actions of celebrities
or have cosmetic surgery to look similar to them. The portrayal of women in the media is affecting women around the world to become someone who
they are not due to society's beliefs of what beautiful is due to the medias portrayal. Portrayal of women in the media is that women are expected to

The media is constantly rating women on their clothes, appearance, and hair. For example in people magazine there is a section called Best
Dressed and Worst Dressed, in this section they out the top ten best clothing worn and top ten worst dressed. Women in the media are constantly
being graded on hair, makeup, and clothes and society does not accept them for their accomplishments. The media also shows a lack of tolerance
towards overweight or thicker women. Women who are heavier or are looked as being heavy are an easy target to the media. Keeping up with the
Kardashians star, Khloe Kardashian, is constantly attacked of being heavy compared to her siblings, she finally broke down in tears explaining
her discomfort. "I'm so tired of pretending that I'm happy with my weight to be a good role model, because I'm disgusting"( Khloe Kardashian
breaks down in tears). Another group of women who receive a lack of tolerance and are being attacked are ones who are "not sexy". Women are
pressured to wear clothing that makes them look "sexy" but women who are not good enough are made fun of wearing something out of their
comfort zone. "Lady GaGa, for example, walking around in her bra and knickers and being really sexy but still she's not sexy at all, to me" (Lady
GaGa is not sexy). The media drives all women to be perfect by this triangle; media pushes celebrities to be perfect as the celebrities do that causes

I Am A Traditional Chinese Girl
I am a traditional Chinese girl. In my memory, I was always told that I was very quiet and assiduous, and I was always being commissary in charge of
studies of a class from my elementary school. After 6th grade, I enrolled in an outstanding students class of junior high school with distinction score. In
the junior high school, I also studied hard, it was certain that I got good grades during my junior high school. There was a turning point to me in
2011. After consulted with my parents, I decided to go to an International high school. It was a completely different educational system compare to
my previous study. Because the instruction language and study mode changed, I felt difficult to adapt myself to the study life of high school. I
was confused my future study goal and I fell to the bottom of my study life and school life in the beginning of my high school. In my grade ten's
summer vocation, my cousin, Edmund came back from Seattle, he was a freshman of UW in that year. He showed me some photos of Seattle, I
was attracted by the Sakura in UW, they were so beautiful. He also introduced some campus details and funny stories of UW to me. From that time,
UW became a worthy goal for me to strive for. I began to have more communication with my teachers and tried more study methods for my IB study.
Finally, my grades became better and better, and got 41 in my final predicted score. In 12th grade, I applied UW to be a freshman, unfortunately,

Grunge Fashion
Nothing screamed 90's fashion more than chunky shoes, baggy jeans and mood rings. The 80's represented a time of outrageous fashion in a neon
rainbow of colours, the 90's however opted towards the casual look. You would either go for a 'too care to care' look known as grunge fashion or a cute
school girl look with some platform shoes. Need to State points and hypothesis
90s fashion for teenage girls was a mix of baggy and revealing. Some went for the grunge look and others preferred the school girl look. The school
girl look included a mini skirt, knee high socks and of course a pair of platform shoes. Celebrities like Britney spears, the Spice Girls and Cher from
clueless were examples of the 90s school girl look. The grunge look was more unstructured and loose and avoided any tight fitted clothing. The look
consisted of a band tee, baggy ripped jeans paired with a flannel and the more comfortable option of shoes a pair of doc martens. Celebrities like
Gwen Stefani, Drew Barrymore and Johnny Depp went for this look. Guys in the 90's all went for a 'just fell out of bed look' also following the
grunge fashion. It incorporated baggy jeans, a flannel, greasy hair covered with a backwards cap and some combat boots. The saying what goes

People in London or New York would therefore be wearing similar clothes to people in Perth or Sydney. Globalization also led designers to borrow

Summary OfShopping By Joyce Oates And Fish Cheeks
Lessons Learned: Mothers as Teachers in two Short Fiction Works. In the short stories "Shopping" by Joyce Oates and "Fish Cheeks" by Amy Tan, I
discovered a connection in both stories about mothers love. Both show a gratitude of reasons on how and why mothers love is present. Both stories
have a completely different morals but both come together into one meaning; mothers love.
In the short story "Shopping" by Joyce Oates, we experience the mother, Mrs. Dietrich, doing multiple things for her daughter, Nola, such as buying her
expensive clothing. The author agrees when she writes, "...though the sweater by Sergio Valente, even 'drastically reduced,' is certainly not cheap. Mrs.

author reports that, "...But she sits stiff, turning her wineglass between her fingers. Mrs. Dietrich is afraid her daughter will leave the restaurant,
simply walk away; that has happened before and if it happens today she doesn't know what she will do." Mothers work hard, physically and mentally.
With working hard, comes compassion and lessons learned. In both stories, we see a big similarity– tough love and lessons learned. In "Fish Cheeks"
by Amy tan we see this in a silent lesson. As they invite the ministersfamily over for Christmas Eve dinner, the mother has a treat for them. They are
a chinese family and they don't celebrate it with the old fashioned turkey and mashed potatoes, which the daughter, Amy, is nervous about for she has
a major crush on the minister's son. She becomes embarrassed about her heritage and says, "I wanted to disappear" (Tan). Towards the end of the
story, when the minister's family leaves, the mother pulls Amy aside and states, "You want to be the same as American girls on the outside.. But inside
you must always be Chinese. You must be proud you are different. Your only shame is to have shame." and response to her mother, Amy agrees when
she writes, "And even though I didn't agree with

Descriptive Essay
The music was beautiful.
His fingers flowed across the piano keys like a ballerina, so elegant and graceful. His gaze was lowered to where his hands spun the melodic notes and I
could make out the dark, black lashes on his eyes lined perfectly with one another. He appeared calm, serene, at peace. No frown marked his
forehead, no desire tugged at his lips. He was simply sat at the back of the common room, slipped into his own world of beautiful music.
I sat at my desk with a pile of homework slumped beside me. My chin was cupped in my hands and my head was tilted to one side as I watched him
with smiling eyes, ignoring the duties laid out in front. Somewhere beneath my surface, I knew that I had a million of things to do but for now, in this
small, precious moment, I wasn 't about to let go of the perfect image layed before me on my computer screen.
His name is Luhan. He is a Chinese singer and actor and everyday since I found out about him, he has become a huge part of my life. Everyday, I
would sit on my desk pretending to be engaged with a pile of homework, when really, I was fantasising an unrealistic romance with him because there
was no way someone famous like him would end up with an ordinary girl like me.
In this moment, everything seemed fine. The atmosphere was calm and he was beautiful and my mind was untroubled for once. There was nothing to
be upset about, I told myself. I was fine, everything was okay, I was okay.
And everything really was going okay– until

Esperanza Character Analysis: The House On Mango Street
I chose this quote because it displays the division of gender, or split into two sides based on boys and girls. Women were thought to be inferior to
men and men dominated the society. Esperanza had no friends other than her brothers who would not be seen with her in public. I choose to
incorporate this quote into my journal because the women are deemed as powerless. However Esperanza is willing to make a change and be an
individual by not being dependent on anyone else. When the author writes about a balloon being tied down by an anchor, I think it beautifully paints a
picture of Esperanza's loneliness and isolation. As I read through the book, I noticed how the color red seemed to continue popping up. Because

Essay On Foot Binding
The idea of having one's feet broken and misshapen, forcing her to walk through life with a hobble, draws comparison to medieval torture methods of
Europe. Many Song women, however, bound their feet, along with the feet of their young daughters, willingly. Tiny feet were the epitome of beauty
for centuries after its height in the Song Dynasty, and women used foot binding as an act of empowerment. There are a couple different stories
describing how foot binding began, but all the originations stories feature a woman with small feet favored by the emperor. One belief is that in
1200BC, Empress Ta Ki was born with a clubfoot (Bossan). Not wanting to be singled out for her disability, she used her power to force all young girls

Preparation for marriage began long before a girl reached puberty. Mothers across China during the foot binding era began breaking and reshaping their
daughters' feet around age six, ensuring their feet would be the ideal three Chinese inches in length (Bound 2005). As many as two billion women
bounded their feet and, due to the popularity of the practice, most men grew accustomed to, and preferred, women with doll–sized feet (Lim,
Footbinding: From Status Symbol to Subjugation). Foot binding grew from a lifestyle only the regal participated into one embraced by multiple
social classes. Girls from lower classes began binding their feet in order to elevate their social status and marry rich (Lim, Painful Memories for
China's Footbinding Survivors). William Rossi, the author of The Sex Life of the Foot and Shoe, estimated that "40 percent to 50 percent of Chinese
women had bound feet in the 19th century" (Lim, Footbinding: From Status Symbol to Subjugation). Foot binding's popularity continued into the 20th
century, as Zhou Guizhen, a foot binder for over 75 years, recalls "if you didn't bind your feet, no one would marry you" (Lim, Painful Memories for
China's Footbinding Survivors). At the price of two permanently disfigured feet, a woman had the ability to improve her class

Love and War between Mothers and Daughters
A mother and daughter relationship can be either good or bad, but it's definitely interesting. People say this kind of bond is unbreakable because of
what they shared during pregnancy and birth, but others say this bond doesn't last for long or maybe never really grew. In this short story "A Pair of
Tickets" and poem "Hanging Fire" show a difference in each relationship.
In "A pair of Tickets" the character Jing–mei, is an American Woman on a pilgrimage to China to meet her half–sisters, who were also abandoned by

they aren't, but all that doesn't matter because all that counts is blood and heritage. Through her meeting with her half–sisters, Jing–mei finds her
heritage and identity.
In the poem "Hanging Fire" is written from a point of view of a 14 year old girl who is worried about her life ending to early and seems to be
impatient about when her life will start to turn around and go the right away. The first and second line "I am fourteen and my skin has betrayed me"
means that this girl believes she is missing out on things because she is not white. Many young children are unaware of their race and how they can
become affected by it, but as they get older around the time of puberty they start to notice the difference. In line three, four and five "the boy I cannot
live without still l sucks his thumb in secret" since she is fourteen, she is a young woman but in other ways she is still a child. She thinks she is old
enough of all in love but the boy that she loves is still childish. She doesn't seem to see her own childish , but we can because most young girls always

It was hot. So hot, that sweat caused clothes clung to all skin it came into contact with. This sweat was dripping off her as if it was forced water
cascading from a small opening at the top of the head of a statue standing in the center of a fountain. However, it wasn't a statue standing in the
center of a fountain, but a small child on her knees leaning up against a wall. If this was not the worst bed bell dream a child receive as a gift, then
the horror that came next to mind was told true. There was the taste of blueberries in her mouth that did nothing to help with the discomfort and had
only added more sorrow to what she was now experiencing. Wherever this hot dark place was and where the tang of blueberry in her mouth came
from, only the gods knew and she was too young to be recognized by them as one of their servants to ask those questions. This only added to the
enormous mountain of confusion her mind was unsuccessfully trying to sort out. The last thing she remembered was of a wonderful bed bell dream
gift, but it had suddenly turned dark and scary. Her mother and father both had tears in their eyes and her father more so of the two. She was chosen to

A Warrior's Triumph
The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston presents the story of a girl trapped between the cultures of her surrounding environment and that which
her mother and family have forced upon her. Knowing only the Chinese way of life, this girl's mother attempts to familiarize her daughter, whom is
also the narrator, with the history of their family. The mother shares this heritage through the use of stories in hopes the narrator will be prepared for
her ultimate return to China, which is a life completely foreign to her own. Through these stories and the strong influence of the surrounding American
culture, the narrator's life and imagination spin off in a new direction. She is confronted by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These expectations increased when she was in the presence of "great power, [her] mother talking story" (20). In one particular situation, the narrator
recalls her mother singing about Fa Mu Lan, the woman warrior. Although her mother expected her daughter to become a wife or a slave, the narrator
had a different idea; she would "grow up a woman warrior" (20). As a young girl, she said that she "couldn't tell where the stories left off and the
dreams began" (19). This is the case in "White Tigers." The narrator's dream–state takes readers into the mind of a girl who attempts to please her
mother and entire family by becoming a woman warrior. This is possibly an attempt to subside much of the harsh ridicule she receives from her
mother due to cultural differences. Although this is a key factor in her early childhood, she learns to block out these criticisms as she grows older.
There is significant evidence of this growing maturity in "Shaman." In the beginning of the chapter, the reader can find an increased pressure placed
on the narrator while hearing about her mother's bravery and intelligence at medical school. This story added on to those her mother told about World
War II fighter planes, which terrified the narrator for many years. Also, as a young girl, her mother would refer to America as being "full of

higher quality products than Wal–Mart. The clothing for both boys and girls sections are close together. I noticed that there are articles of clothing
that are similar for boys and girls, but they are called different names to make them more masculine or feminine. For example, shirts for girls are
called fashion tops and just shirts for boys. Some patterns that I saw in the clothing/toys is that for almost each advertisement or label had a picture of a

Other factors are how kids play with each other, their peers they are surrounded by, and the media. Males tend to be more physical when they play
indicating that they are more aggressive than females are. Both males and females play different sports than females. An instance would be
football, soccer, and wrestling, compared to cheerleading, gymnastics, and volleyball for the girls. Football, soccer, and wrestling are a more
physical contact sport than cheerleading, gymnastics or volleyball are. Peers is also another part for socialization because the way boys or girls
act around each other. Children follow by example, so if they see their friends doing something, they will most likely follow. As children get older,
peers plays a bigger part in influencing children to act a certain way according to society and other peers. Lastly, the media is additionally has a
huge impression on how kids should act and look. The commercials for children on T.V. convince children what they should be playing with, who
they should be playing with, how they should look, and how they should act. It is very rare to see girls playing Legos or hot wheels in commercials.

finally able to socialize with their community members. It is also, the day that the mother will be able to present her daughter to her friends and
celebrate this occasion with them. These family traditions are seen as reminders of events that have shaped family members before. Every family will

Analysis of Girls Like Us by Rachel Lloyd
This week's reflection is on a book titled Girls Like Us and it is authored by Rachel Lloyd. The cover also says "fighting for a world where girls not for
sale". After reading that title I had a feeling this book was going to be about girls being prostituted at a young age and after reading prologue I sadly
realized I was right in my prediction.
The prologue starts with the description about a girl who likes swimming, SpongeBob, Mexican food, writing poetry and getting her nails painted. To
a normal person this sounds like a normal description for a little girl but normal is not the adjective to describe this girl because this little girl has
been trafficked (or prostituted) by her 29 year old pimp on Craiglist to adult men. When I read ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It's just all a sickening thought to me.
There was also Tiffany in the first chapter whose pimp cut her so bad that she had to have her hair shaved off in order to get some consistency in it.
Tiffany did not have a drug problem but the author talked about how it was hard to find her placement because she wasn't on drugs so Tiffany turned
to drugs so she could receive help. The thought of someone having to turn to drug just to they could receive help is sad because it's like what would
happen if they were living a normal life that did not involve drugs, pimps, and johns.
There is another quote that in interesting to me in this book and it is from Jon Stewart who is an Academy Award Winner and he states "You know
what I think it just got a little easier out here for a pimp" and that quote says a lot as well because there aren't very many pimps that do get in trouble
for their crimes in my opinion. I read more about prostitutes and the men trying to pick them up getting arrested than I do pimps. There was one girl
the book who talked about how she got in trouble for killing her abusive boyfriend yet nothing happened to him. It's an angry thought at how men who
are so evil can get away with it but their victims get in legal trouble.
I am not going to describe every chapter and quote in the book but I will say there is a lot of information to be learned from this book. I did not know
much about child trafficking prior to sitting down to read this book.

A few years ago, I had a Chinese student in my classroom, Evan was his name. He was very bright and inquisitive. His parents spoke very little
English and ran a local Chinese restaurant close to the school. While this student was one of my highest readers his comprehension and background

helping others. This girl in the picture was helping her mother by folding towels and putting them away. When I asked Evan to explain to me how
the girls was showing good citizenship in the picture, he could not. He did not know the name of the objects that the girls was carrying. When I

that meant she was helping her mother. Obviously, they use towels at his house or they would all go around soaking wet! But Evan did not have the

that she, as well as the characters that she is responsible for, acts properly. This is clearly illustrated when she encounters Billina after her fight with a
rooster in Princess Langwidere's chicken–yard: "'I don't approve of this, at all,' she said, carrying Billina away toward the palace. 'It isn't a good thing
for you to associate with those common chickens. They would soon spoil your good manners, and you wouldn't be respectable any more'" (90–91).
This passage is one of the most memorable passages in Alicebecause it so resembles the typical conversation that young girls often have with their
dolls at imaginary tea parties. Imitating what their own mothers say to them over and over again – "Don't speak unless you're spoken to," "Don't shift
in your seat while your elders are talking to you," "You must be a proper young lady"– these young girls try to come to terms with all of the social
restrictions that are placed upon them and to

Two Kinds of Interpretations in Amy Tanв
Ђ™s Short Story Two...
Often times mothers can be pushy, annoying, and a bit overbearing but in the long run they always just want what is best for their child. Everyone
wants their child to be the best, most popular and overall number one. In Amy Tan's short story "Two Kinds" we see this type of fame hungry mother.
The short story is about a Chinese family who lost everything. The mother had lost her entire family full of children except for the one in the story. With
the belief "you could be anything you want in America" (Tan 305) in mind the mother set off to find what her child can do. This ultimately will resort
in disappointment for both the mother and child, as they do not share the same goals throughout the short story. My initial personal interpretation of
this piece is that the mother wants to live vicariously through her daughter. This was proven throughout the story time and time again. Through further
thought, different literary techniques, and class discussion I became aware of an alternate interpretation of the story. This is that their are two kinds of
daughters and the way the mother daughter relationship could be. Both interpretations have many examples to support them and the story can truly be
analyzed in more then one way. The mother in the story is sensibly upset about what has happened in the past in China. After losing everything she
wanted the best for her daughter, but could this possibly mean she wanted it for herself as well. It seems the mother might have

Analysis Of ' The Red Balloon '
Esperanza matures significantly after she moves with her family to Mango Street, which is an improvement from the previous houses she has
lived in. However, it is not the home, she dreamed of. When Esperanza first moves to Mango Street she has child like thoughts. She is insecure
and ignorant to the life and people around her. In the beginning she makes the comparison of a "red balloon tied to an anchor." Due to her not
having friends with whom she can share her secrets with and understand her jokes. Although she has Nenny, her little sister, is considered more of
a responsibility. The bold color of the red balloon suggests that she sticks out from the rest of the people, floating there alone, she feels as if she
does not belong. The anchor suggesting she is weighed down, unable to float away from Mango Street. Esperanza is not very fond of her name, due
to people saying it oddly, as well as having her own feelings about her name. She states "In English my name means hope. In Spanish it means too
many letters. It means sadness, it means waiting." Although what she says about her name in Spanish, is taken from the word Esperar which is
Spanish for "to wait or expect." When in English there is no word, nor a dictionary definition to her name. All things considered, she may not like her
name, and want to baptize herself under a new name. She has already given meaning to her name, which to her is hope to all the sadness. Even though
Esperanza does not fancy her name, she had

Comparing The Story Fox Enchantment And The Old Nurse's Story
Ghosts, Foxes and Manors...A Perfect Combination Ghosts come in all different shape, sizes and forms, which now includes foxes. In some Chinese
ghost stories, there are ghosts called fox spirits. These are ghosts that leave behind the carcass of a fox when they die. One Chinese fox spirit story
"Fox Enchantment" is written by Pu Songling. A western ghost story "The Old Nurse's Story" by English writer Gaskell, produces no fox spirit.
However, both stories have similarities, one being the violent nature of the ghosts. These stories do have differences though, such as the form that these
ghosts choose to take. In both, the Chinese and the European stories, the ghosts have violent tendencies. In the story "Fox Enchantment", Dong Xiasi,

After refusing to have sex with the ghost woman, he dies. She then moves on to the friend that Dong was drinking with. He also begins to waste

previously inhabited. Throughout the entire ghost story, the fox spirit wants nothing more than to kill the men she sleeps with. She kills these men in
a very cold and calculated manner, by having them wither away into nothing, yet still demanding sex from them. When they refuse, she kills them just
as she did with Dong. This shows just how malice and violent she can be in order to obtain her goal. Similarly, in the European story "The Old Nurse's
Story", there are several ghosts including a little girl and a grown man. The story begins with a nurse maid named Hester, and a little girl named
Rosamond living in Furnivall Manor House. One day Rosamond goes missing, and is discovered outside on the snow covered ground, cold and nearly
dead. The next morning, Hester asks her why she went outside, and she responds that a little girl beckoned to her. Throughout the story the little girl

Every little girl dreams about her wedding day, from the food to her dress. The little girl dreams of what she assumes what will be the happiest day

Their hopes were to start a new life in a new country where they would no longer be oppressed and live happy lives with their "tall and handsome"

Stereotypes In China
a.Stereotype/ pg. 112: assumptions of what people are like, whether true or false
The assumptions made toward girls and women in most cultures is that they are weak and not as capable as men. While women do tend to have more
fat, not has as much muscle mass, and are typically shorter in stature in comparison to men, this does not necessarily mean they are weaker. If you
compare a weightlifting woman to an average man, you will probably find that the women is stronger, and vice versa. However, if you compare an
average man to an average woman, there is a large chance the man will be stronger, simply due to his biological makeup. With that being said, again,

If you do not have a son the first time around it is acceptable for the couple to decide to abort their baby if they knew the sex beforehand, or to put it
up for adoption and try again until you get a male. And if the couple is not able to conceive a male, as seen in the video, it appears normal for the
husband to threaten to leave the wife unless she gives him a son or to actually go forth and leave her so he can try his hand at having a son with
another women (although, ironically enough, it is the male's sperm that decides the sex of the baby). As mentioned before, having more than one
child or have only a daughter is so absurd and such a violation of the norms in China, it seems to be an act of deviance. And although a couple can
technically have more than one child legally in China, it is so frowned upon that couples who choose to do so are taxed for their decision. And even
then, although the movie did not mention this, I assume that if a couple does choose to have more than one child and ends up having a girl, even if they
already have a male child, they are probably encouraged to give their daughter up for adoption and try for two sons. Although, again something that
was not mentioned in the video but I am sure happens sometimes in China, when a woman gives birth to twins, a boy and girl, I wonder what they do
then? Do they still get taxed, or do they

Hips are used as a symbol to reveal the power of a women body's. Hips are mighty, free, and seductive. Hips are used for childbearing, only a female
power. Lucille Clifton's, a supporter of African Americans and feminism, believes that women have the same power as men. Anything men can do
women can do the same, even better. Lucille Clifton's "Homage to My Hips" rebuts the division of labor mechanism instilled in our society that isn't
politically correct; thereby taking a powerful stance in her confident belief that woman can do the same as men.

period was much more difficult than today. She had to face ignorant minds and fight for her belief. Lucille Clifton praises her body that has made

Women were granted with a gift that no man could ever do, childbearing. Many look at it as not a grand thing, but in fact the world is dependent on

Trouble didn't start until I was in the bathroom and several of the popular girls cornered me. "Maybe someone didn't tell you yet, Newton,"

Gendercide: Elimination of One Sex Essay
Gendercide is a term referring to the elimination of one sex through selective abortion, infanticide, neglecting and abuse. Most of the time the
preference is for male. The United Nation specialists estimate that as many as two hundred million girls are missing in the world today. To give a broad
figure, they explain that people practicing gendercide in China and India eliminates more girls that than the number of girls born in America each year.
All in all, they describe the phenomenon as the biggest single holocaust in human history.
We can see this phenomenon happening in different countries of Asia. As a matter of fact, China and India top the charts for skewedsex ratio at birth.
They are also the most populated countries in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, we do see gendercide occurring few years after a baby girl is born. In some places, female infanticide is frequently occurring in the early
years of the unwanted child. In regions of India, a fair amount of girl does not live past puberty because of child abuse and neglecting. There is also
an imbalance in infant mortality rate of boys and girls.
At the same time that they practice gender selection, most women do believe that boys and girls are equal. They typically blame external factors that
are forcing them to abandon their baby girls. They do find all sorts of explanations to justify their behavior. They sometimes say that they prefer to
kill a baby girl right away instead of doing a slow kill, raising her in poverty. The question of passionate crime is another debate, but unfortunate
people do not always have a lot of options.
Gendercide is obviously illegal in Canada. However we do see some gender selection occurring among the ethnic communities. The same people who
practice gendercide overseas tends to practice it when they arrive in Canada. You do not simply abandon all of your traditions, even those who are
questionable, when you cross borders. It is something that happens in certain communities and secretly stays in the communities. It is simply

The American Dream Essay
As we studied in the previous unit, the American Dream is the idea that everybody is equal to each other and people can live their lives to the
fullest. I also believed that this dream was for Americans only. However, after realizing that other countries and cultures had heard of how great life
in America is, they wanted to be part of the American Dream as well. These immigrants took action by entering the U.S. through Ellis Island, which
used to be the main hub for all foreigners to apply for ability to enter the U.S. The main reason that people immigrated to America was to have
freedom. During World War II, many people were murdered for being Jewish. This act by Adolf Hitler showed that religions were restricted in Europe
during World War II. People wanted to live a more free life with no restrictions to their religious beliefs, causing many immigrants to come to the U.S.
In Casablanca, Victor Lazlo and Ilsa Lund fly to the United States to find safety for Lazlo so he can live freely without being arrested. Lazlo had to
escape to the U.S. because he was the leader of the riots against Nazi Germany. The United States was considered safe since they were neutral in the
war. James Bradley discusses the mass Chinese murders and how the Japanese treated the Chinese civilians. I thought the way the Japanese people
treated the Chinese was very extreme and very unnecessary. Japanese people would not only throw grenades into large crowds and watch them
explode, but "stick dynamite in girls vaginas and cut fetuses out of their wombs" (Bradley 59). Reading this made me very upset on how they treated
Chinese civilians but more specifically Chinese women. Most of all the killings were directed towards women because the Japanese believed that not
only were women easy targets, but watching their deaths would be more entertaining. These killings were later recognized as the "Rape of China."
The difference between the word woman and girl may not seem vast, but many adult women feel disrespected when referred to as girls. The feminist
movement worked hard for active women to be referred to as "women," never as "girls." In an article "Women vs. Girl," by Tabby Biddle, Biddle
believed that the term girl was considered

An Analysis Of Amy Tan's Short Story 'Two Kinds'
The Ungrateful Underachiever
The definition of an underachiever as stated by Webster is "one (such as a student) that fails to attain a predicted level of achievement or does not do as
well as expected." In the short story "Two Kinds" written by Amy Tan, Ni'Kan is the queen of underachievers. She determines at a young age to become
defiant to her mom. After experiencing disappointment from letting her mom down, Ni'Kan determined that she would become an underachiever and
intentionally failed throughout her life.
What makes a child determine at such a young age to defy her mom on every hand for the rest of their life? The sad realization that Ni'Kan would
rather see her mother angry at her than disappointed in her became her revelation. Anger meant that she was in control and not her mom.
"And then I saw what seemed to be the prodigy side of me – a face I had never seen before. I looked at my reflection, blinking so that I could see more
clearly. The girl staring back at me was angry, powerful. She and I were the same. I had new thoughts, willful thoughts – or rather, thoughts filled with
lots of won'ts. I won't let her change me, I promised myself. I won't be what I'm not." (2)
This shows the beginning of when Ni'Kan realized she was not ever going to become a child prodigy for her mom.

The literary piece by Celeste Flores–Coscolluela, "Why I Quit Teaching at the Chinese School for Girls," is a short story told in the first person and

Ms. Diaz, though hard working as a teacher, did not appreciate her employment because there were many factors present in her experiences with the
Chinese school for girls that could have prompted her resignation. Evidence that shows the narrator as the antagonist is the recount of events which
revealed her attitude toward the school. The pattern in the story is how the narrator constantly described the school as negatively, whether she was...

Gender Roles In The House On Mango Street
In kindergarten, some of the most cherished moments were getting to play with your friends at recess. The bell would ring and everyone would go
outside. The girls would go sit on the swings and play pretend while the boys would go run around and play tag. In kindergarten it was common
knowledge that boys have cooties or vise versa. So the separation between girls and boys started at a young age in which the girls and boys could not
interact. In the novella, The House On Mango Street, we follow the life of Esperanza, a young girl living in a poor community. Esperanza's culture didn't
believe that women were equal to men. Throughout the story Esperanza notices the gender roles that takes place in her community and she tries not to
fall in line with them.
Cisneros' uses Esperanza growing up as a way to show people that even young children fall into noticeable gender roles in one's community.
Esperanza is girl who lives in a poor Spanish community. She resides in a tiny house with her Mother, Father, two brothers, and little sisters.
Esperanza is an intelligent young lady who is very aware of the gender roles that are present in her community. Esperanza notes that, "The boys and
girls live in separate worlds. The boys in their universe and we in ours. My brothers for example. They've got plenty to say to me and Nenny inside

The climax of the story is a piano recital and the events that unfold the day after. Her mother is so proud of Amy's musical talent; she even invites
Auntie Lindo and Waverly to Amy's first piano recital. Although Amy slacked on her practicing during the rising action of the story, she actually
feels confident about doing well at the recital. She is overconfident, in fact, and her performance was a disaster. She disappoints her mother, and
makes a fool of her mother or herself? It is also clear that she has disappointed herself, and she regrets not taking lessons more seriously. The next
day, Amy's stubborn mother expects her to practice piano, as if nothing has gone wrong. This is when Amy puts her foot down and refuses. To get her

The Portrayal Of Women During The 1960 's And 1970 ' S
Throughout history, women have been seen as incompetent compared to men, whether it is in the aspect of running a family, maintaining a job, or,
simply put, completing any task of importance. It is no surprise that works of art depict the same misogynistic attitude. Such works include, but are not
limited to, stories, comics, and television shows. Not only does this discrimination hinder on gender, but also race, socio–economic class, ethnicity,
religion, and any other factors that deem one different from the "norm". Most works state men as the competent being, but what they really mean is
white men and, even more specifically, white men with money, so discrimination has been brought upon white females and both black males and
females.
From a very young age, girls are held to different standards than boys. They are expected to act differently, strive for different things, and lead a
more cleanly life. In the 1960's and 1970's, feminism was not yet a prominent idea. You wouldn't see large groups of women, and some men too,
crowding the streets promoting their beliefs that women and men should receive equal pay, women should be able to hold positions of importance in
the workplace, and absolutely not that women should be able to hold a political position of any sort. An article that we read this semester focused

the repressiveness of her Chinese heritage but also manage the different and contradicting repressiveness of American femininity. To reject herself as

The main thesis of Borel's (1994) essay is that there is "an unfathomably deep and universal tendency pushes families, clans, and tribes to rapidly
modify a person's physical appearance." There is also another underlying meaning that further amplifies why a person's genuine physical makeup,
one's given anatomy, is always felt to be unacceptable and that "the body only speaks if it is dressed in artifice." (Borel, 1994). Borel's main purpose
of writing her essay was to inform, persuade and entertain her audience about the history of body ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many children in various cultures had to undergo body modifications due to certain cultures and beliefs. "The feet of very young Chinese girls were
bound and spliced, intentionally and irreversibly deforming them, because this was seen to guarantee the girls' eventual amorous and matrimonial
success." (Borel,1994). In Polynesia, unless a girl was tattooed, she would not find a husband. An unornamented hand could not cook, nor dip into the
communal food bowl (Borel,1994). It is as to say that "the fact that such motivations and pretexts depend on aesthetic, erotic, hygienic, or even medical
considerations has no influence on the result, which is always in the direction of transforming the appearance of the body. Such a transformation is
wished for, whether or not it is effective."
However, I feel that even though Borel gave lots of evidence, some of them might not be relevant as some of the tribes she has mentioned might be
obsolete. Furthermore, this essay was written in 1994, which is more than 20 years back, whereby contemporary beliefs have already formed. Such as
clothing our body in musculature, suntan, or makeup; dying its head hair or pulling out its bodily hair. (Borel, 1994).
In totality, I agree with her thesis that "the total nudity offered at birth does not exist in any region of the world." And that "the body is not a product
of nature, but of culture." Body modifications is still a relevant and constant part in today's

The House On Mango Street Essay
In life, one gets inspired by others, which can also weaken their ability to live their own life in a personal–unique way, but in most case it makes their
lives better. In the novella, The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros, women and their roles are discussed. Esperanza is a 13 year old girl that
questions her life in many ways. She is not proud of who she is or where she lives. When facing discouraging events, she sees who she is as a person.
Esperanza has a variety of female role models in her life. Many are trapped in abusive relationships, waiting for others to change their lives. Some are
actively trying to change things on their own. Through these women and Esperanza's reactions to them, Cisneros' shows not only the hardships ... Show

Alicia is one of Esperanza's best friends that has also gone through many hardships in her life, including losing her mother. In the vignette "Alicia
Who Sees Mice" the author writes, "Alicia, who inherited her mama's rolling pin and sleepiness, is young and smart and studies for the first time at
the university. Two trains and a bus, because she doesn't want to spend her whole life in a factory or behind a rolling pin" (Cisneros 31–32). Alicia
inspires Esperanza because she ignores the stereotype of the woman figure, and goes to learn at a university where she belongs. During the time in the
United States that this book takes place in, the men believed that they were the ones that had to work, and the women had to stay at home to do chores
and look after the children. Esperanza likes that Alicia went to a university because it shows her that she can become something more than a
stay–at–home wife and mother. It also shows Esperanza that she could succeed in school one day. If Alicia can do it, anyone can. Alicia is one of
Esperanza's biggest role models because she breaks the stereotype of the woman role and goes to school to become something

The Cultural Causes And Effects Of Gendercide

  • 1. The Cultural Causes And Effects Of Gendercide "Raising a daughter is like watering your neighbors' garden." That quote from a Hindu proverb.is referring to is how in some cultures when a daughter is old enough to be married, she leaves that family and joins her husbands'. So, raising a daughter in those cultures is seen as helping another family. Unlike females when a son is born he will stay and take care of the parents as they age. This son preference can lead to some countries committing gendercide. The act of gendercide is the mass killing of people because of their sex. Gendercide is a horrid trend that is due to the son preferences of many countries. Parents in Countries such as china and India have been killing there daughters. In India 25 percent of girls die before they can reach puberty. Also, 200 million women are missing because of being killed at a young age. There are many cultural causes of gendercide. The first is that boy babies are valued far more then female babies. Male children can carry on the family name, take care the parents when they get old and are less "expensive" to raise. In India there is a dowry system where in order for a woman to be married, the bride's family must give gifts of money, land, livestock or other expensive items. This can put I strain on poorer families who cannot afford to pay a dowry or richer families who do not want to spend that type of money. So , when they have a girl child they either get an abortion or kill the child to save money. There was a Indian mother that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Essay The Girl Who Wouldn't Sing by Kit Yuen Quan The Girl Who Wouldn't Sing by Kit Yuen Quan In the memoir "The Girl Who Wouldn't Sing", Kit Yuen Quan describes her life experiences growing up as a Chinese girl in America. In her attempt to try and find her place in society, Quan intermingles with several groups of people. Her interactions with a feminist group, two young Cambodian girls, and finally her own father allow her to explore her Chinese background and how that affects her interactions with people. In order to find her own "voice" in a society that is not really hers, Kit Yuen Quan explored relationships with people of different lifestyles. She does so in order to be able to recognize how she wants to express herself, and through which culture, American or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The two girls, Yan and Eng, lived in a terrible neighborhood where there were "drunk men and prostitutes near corners", "the fragrant smell of piss and jasmine rice wafting from windows", and "a medley of languages: Vietnamese, Chinese, Cambodian, English, Black English, Laotian"(Quan 216). Kit went into the situation thinking that she would be able to connect to her culture through knowing a common language. Somewhat to her surprise, the connection to her culture did not come through language, but through observing the experiences of childhood that these two girls were immersed in. Kit states that "whether they were living in a refuge camp in the Philippines or in Thailand or in some one–room apartment on Eddy Street, they were connected to each other through their language and their culture"(Quan 217). It was not so much Kit's own interaction with the girls that allowed her to realize where should would find herself, but her observation of the girls and their interaction with their native language and society. Kit's experience with Yan and Eng compelled her to learn more about her native culture, rather than solely try to fit into the American culture. Kit's attempt to conform to the American standards and culture was precisely the mistake she had made with the feminists. Kit Yuen Quan's time spent with the Cambodian girls allowed her to see ... • 3. Comparison Of Raymond's Run 'And All American Slurp' In the stories, "Raymond's Run" and "All American Slurp," Squeaky and the Lin girl are great characters because they are both looking for the same thing, friends. Both characters have a goal: the Lin girl wants to fit in with her peers, and Squeaky wants to be successful and a good athlete. The Lin girl can not succeed in making friends because of how her family acts and how they are not used to the United States' culture and customs. Squeaky doesn't have many friends because she's very competitive with other people. When you look further at these two girls, you see the true meaning of love and kindness. Squeaky and the Lin girl have trouble making friends, but they have qualities that make them good people. Their challenge in life is that they must overcome these obstacles to succeed in what they want. In "Raymond's Run," Squeaky is very protective of her brother. The Lin's aren't familiar with the United States and people find them to be awkward or different. This family emigrated from China and when they had their first dinner with Americans, they looked different for what and how they ate. One of the reasons the young Lin girl cannot make friends is because of the negative impression she gives to others. Many feel uncomfortable by how she eats. Another reason it is difficult for her and her family to feel welcome is that the family's behavior is odd and unusual in America. The four things that the Lin girl wants are, to learn the American customs, how to be respectful to others, make plenty of friends, and learn the American language. First, the Lin family was uncomfortable at the Gleasons having an American dinner and later, the Gleasons were uncomfortable having a Chinese dinner at the Lins. • 4. The Yellow Wallpaper, And Desiree 's Baby Not so long ago, there was a time that men 's dominance and superiority over women was the social norm. Men were the accepted authorities in any relationship and held all the say. In the two stories, "The Yellow Wallpaper", and "Desiree 's Baby", the female protagonists are portrayed as weak characters who are heavily dependent on their husbands for everything. Without the men in their lives, the women would be essentially helpless. But the authors of these two stores were nothing like their characters. They were both strong–willed women who had a voice of their own and wanted to make sure it was heard. Thus, both authors used these stories to give feminism a voice. Feminism was a concept birthed and bred during the Progressive Era, and time when women's suffrage was at its peak. Women had gained the right to own property, own businesses, and some women even began working outside the home. Both stories, "Desiree's Baby" and "The Yellow Wallpaper" were written in the early 1890s, during this pinnacle time in women's right. The authors of both stories wrote their stories, either accidentally or on purpose, with the undertones of feminism, hoping to expose the unequal treatment and expectations of females to males. Both stories challenged the stereotypical roles of females, and in both, the females ended up being the one in power of their own destinies and overcame the rule of their dominant male counterpart. In "The Yellow Wallpaper" the narrator, Jane, is a wife and mother. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Society Lack of Tolerance in Body Image Tolerance is the realization that there are other people in this world, and we may have our values and views on different topics but must respect others' opinions and have an open mind. Our society is lacking tolerance in many ways but one way is how society expects women to be perfect and live up to the media's expectations. Women attempt to dress and look like celebrities to stay "in–style". Women also may mimic actions of celebrities or have cosmetic surgery to look similar to them. The portrayal of women in the media is affecting women around the world to become someone who they are not due to society's beliefs of what beautiful is due to the medias portrayal. For example in people magazine there is a section called Best Dressed and Worst Dressed, in this section they out the top ten best clothing worn and top ten worst dressed. Women in the media are constantly being graded on hair, makeup, and clothes and society does not accept them for their accomplishments. The media also shows a lack of tolerance towards overweight or thicker women. Women who are heavier or are looked as being heavy are an easy target to the media. Keeping up with the Kardashians star, Khloe Kardashian, is constantly attacked of being heavy compared to her siblings, she finally broke down in tears explaining her discomfort. "I'm so tired of pretending that I'm happy with my weight to be a good role model, because I'm disgusting"( Khloe Kardashian breaks down in tears). Another group of women who receive a lack of tolerance and are being attacked are ones who are "not sexy". Women are pressured to wear clothing that makes them look "sexy" but women who are not good enough are made fun of wearing something out of their comfort zone. "Lady GaGa, for example, walking around in her bra and knickers and being really sexy but still she's not sexy at all, to me" (Lady GaGa is not sexy). In my memory, I was always told that I was very quiet and assiduous, and I was always being commissary in charge of studies of a class from my elementary school. After 6th grade, I enrolled in an outstanding students class of junior high school with distinction score. In the junior high school, I also studied hard, it was certain that I got good grades during my junior high school. There was a turning point to me in 2011. After consulted with my parents, I decided to go to an International high school. It was a completely different educational system compare to my previous study. Because the instruction language and study mode changed, I felt difficult to adapt myself to the study life of high school. I was confused my future study goal and I fell to the bottom of my study life and school life in the beginning of my high school. He showed me some photos of Seattle, I was attracted by the Sakura in UW, they were so beautiful. He also introduced some campus details and funny stories of UW to me. From that time, UW became a worthy goal for me to strive for. I began to have more communication with my teachers and tried more study methods for my IB study. The 80's represented a time of outrageous fashion in a neon rainbow of colours, the 90's however opted towards the casual look. You would either go for a 'too care to care' look known as grunge fashion or a cute school girl look with some platform shoes. Need to State points and hypothesis 90s fashion for teenage girls was a mix of baggy and revealing. Some went for the grunge look and others preferred the school girl look. Celebrities like Britney spears, the Spice Girls and Cher from clueless were examples of the 90s school girl look. The grunge look was more unstructured and loose and avoided any tight fitted clothing. • 8. Summary OfShopping By Joyce Oates And Fish Cheeks Lessons Learned: Mothers as Teachers in two Short Fiction Works. In the short stories "Shopping" by Joyce Oates and "Fish Cheeks" by Amy Tan, I discovered a connection in both stories about mothers love. Both show a gratitude of reasons on how and why mothers love is present. Both stories have a completely different morals but both come together into one meaning; mothers love. In the short story "Shopping" by Joyce Oates, we experience the mother, Mrs. Dietrich, doing multiple things for her daughter, Nola, such as buying her expensive clothing. The author agrees when she writes, "...though the sweater by Sergio Valente, even 'drastically reduced,' is certainly not cheap. Mrs. Dietrich feels the motherly obligation to register a mild ... Mothers work hard, physically and mentally. With working hard, comes compassion and lessons learned. In both stories, we see a big similarity– tough love and lessons learned. In "Fish Cheeks" by Amy tan we see this in a silent lesson. As they invite the ministersfamily over for Christmas Eve dinner, the mother has a treat for them. They are a chinese family and they don't celebrate it with the old fashioned turkey and mashed potatoes, which the daughter, Amy, is nervous about for she has a major crush on the minister's son. She becomes embarrassed about her heritage and says, "I wanted to disappear" (Tan). Towards the end of the story, when the minister's family leaves, the mother pulls Amy aside and states, "You want to be the same as American girls on the outside.. • 9. Descriptive Essay The music was beautiful. His fingers flowed across the piano keys like a ballerina, so elegant and graceful. His gaze was lowered to where his hands spun the melodic notes and I could make out the dark, black lashes on his eyes lined perfectly with one another. He appeared calm, serene, at peace. No frown marked his forehead, no desire tugged at his lips. He was simply sat at the back of the common room, slipped into his own world of beautiful music. I sat at my desk with a pile of homework slumped beside me. My chin was cupped in my hands and my head was tilted to one side as I watched him with smiling eyes, ignoring the duties laid out in front. Somewhere beneath my surface, I knew that I had a million of things to do but for now, in this small, precious moment, I wasn 't about to let go of the perfect image layed before me on my computer screen. • 11. Essay On Foot Binding The idea of having one's feet broken and misshapen, forcing her to walk through life with a hobble, draws comparison to medieval torture methods of Europe. Many Song women, however, bound their feet, along with the feet of their young daughters, willingly. Tiny feet were the epitome of beauty for centuries after its height in the Song Dynasty, and women used foot binding as an act of empowerment. There are a couple different stories describing how foot binding began, but all the originations stories feature a woman with small feet favored by the emperor. The thought of someone having to turn to drug just to they could receive help is sad because it's like what would happen if they were living a normal life that did not involve drugs, pimps, and johns. There is another quote that in interesting to me in this book and it is from Jon Stewart who is an Academy Award Winner and he states "You know what I think it just got a little easier out here for a pimp" and that quote says a lot as well because there aren't very many pimps that do get in trouble for their crimes in my opinion. I read more about prostitutes and the men trying to pick them up getting arrested than I do pimps. There was one girl the book who talked about how she got in trouble for killing her abusive boyfriend yet nothing happened to him. Often times mothers can be pushy, annoying, and a bit overbearing but in the long run they always just want what is best for their child. Everyone wants their child to be the best, most popular and overall number one. In Amy Tan's short story "Two Kinds" we see this type of fame hungry mother. The short story is about a Chinese family who lost everything. The mother had lost her entire family full of children except for the one in the story. With the belief "you could be anything you want in America" (Tan 305) in mind the mother set off to find what her child can do. This ultimately will resort in disappointment for both the mother and child, as they do not share the same goals throughout the short story. My initial personal interpretation of this piece is that the mother wants to live vicariously through her daughter. This was proven throughout the story time and time again. Through further thought, different literary techniques, and class discussion I became aware of an alternate interpretation of the story. This is that their are two kinds of daughters and the way the mother daughter relationship could be. Both interpretations have many examples to support them and the story can truly be analyzed in more then one way. And even then, although the movie did not mention this, I assume that if a couple does choose to have more than one child and ends up having a girl, even if they already have a male child, they are probably encouraged to give their daughter up for adoption and try for two sons. Although, again something that was not mentioned in the video but I am sure happens sometimes in China, when a woman gives birth to twins, a boy and girl, I wonder what they do then? Do they still get taxed, or do they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. The American Dream Essay As we studied in the previous unit, the American Dream is the idea that everybody is equal to each other and people can live their lives to the fullest. I also believed that this dream was for Americans only. However, after realizing that other countries and cultures had heard of how great life in America is, they wanted to be part of the American Dream as well. These immigrants took action by entering the U.S. through Ellis Island, which used to be the main hub for all foreigners to apply for ability to enter the U.S. The main reason that people immigrated to America was to have freedom. During World War II, many people were murdered for being Jewish. This act by Adolf Hitler showed that religions were restricted in Europe during World War II. People wanted to live a more free life with no restrictions to their religious beliefs, causing many immigrants to come to the U.S. In Casablanca, Victor Lazlo and Ilsa Lund fly to the United States to find safety for Lazlo so he can live freely without being arrested. Lazlo had to escape to the U.S. because he was the leader of the riots against Nazi Germany. The United States was considered safe since they were neutral in the war. James Bradley discusses the mass Chinese murders and how the Japanese treated the Chinese civilians. I thought the way the Japanese people treated the Chinese was very extreme and very unnecessary. Japanese people would not only throw grenades into large crowds and watch them explode, but "stick dynamite in girls vaginas and cut fetuses out of their wombs" (Bradley 59). Reading this made me very upset on how they treated Chinese civilians but more specifically Chinese women. Most of all the killings were directed towards women because the Japanese believed that not only were women easy targets, but watching their deaths would be more entertaining. These killings were later recognized as the "Rape of China." The difference between the word woman and girl may not seem vast, but many adult women feel disrespected when referred to as girls. The feminist movement worked hard for active women to be referred to as "women," never as "girls." An Analysis Of Amy Tan's Short Story 'Two Kinds' The Ungrateful Underachiever The definition of an underachiever as stated by Webster is "one (such as a student) that fails to attain a predicted level of achievement or does not do as well as expected." In the short story "Two Kinds" written by Amy Tan, Ni'Kan is the queen of underachievers. She determines at a young age to become defiant to her mom. After experiencing disappointment from letting her mom down, Ni'Kan determined that she would become an underachiever and intentionally failed throughout her life. What makes a child determine at such a young age to defy her mom on every hand for the rest of their life? The sad realization that Ni'Kan would rather see her mother angry at her than disappointed in her became her revelation. Anger meant that she was in control and not her mom. "And then I saw what seemed to be the prodigy side of me – a face I had never seen before. I looked at my reflection, blinking so that I could see more clearly. The girl staring back at me was angry, powerful. She and I were the same. I had new thoughts, willful thoughts – or rather, thoughts filled with lots of won'ts. I won't let her change me, I promised myself. I won't be what I'm not." (2) This shows the beginning of when Ni'Kan realized she was not ever going to become a child prodigy for her mom. The Portrayal Of Women During The 1960 's And 1970 ' S Throughout history, women have been seen as incompetent compared to men, whether it is in the aspect of running a family, maintaining a job, or, simply put, completing any task of importance. It is no surprise that works of art depict the same misogynistic attitude. Such works include, but are not limited to, stories, comics, and television shows. Not only does this discrimination hinder on gender, but also race, socio–economic class, ethnicity, religion, and any other factors that deem one different from the "norm". Most works state men as the competent being, but what they really mean is white men and, even more specifically, white men with money, so discrimination has been brought upon white females and both black males and females. From a very young age, girls are held to different standards than boys. They are expected to act differently, strive for different things, and lead a more cleanly life. In the 1960's and 1970's, feminism was not yet a prominent idea. You wouldn't see large groups of women, and some men too, crowding the streets promoting their beliefs that women and men should receive equal pay, women should be able to hold positions of importance in the workplace, and absolutely not that women should be able to hold a political position of any sort. "The Decorated Body" was featured in the Parabola in 1994. The main thesis of Borel's (1994) essay is that there is "an unfathomably deep and universal tendency pushes families, clans, and tribes to rapidly modify a person's physical appearance." There is also another underlying meaning that further amplifies why a person's genuine physical makeup, one's given anatomy, is always felt to be unacceptable and that "the body only speaks if it is dressed in artifice." Such a transformation is wished for, whether or not it is effective."
